spring 10th BIRTHDAY
MARKET EDITION 20 & 21 OCTOBER 2018 1
2
Welcome to Handmade Magazine, Spring 2018 edition. Not only are we energised by the warmer weather, blue skies and lush greenery, but we are also celebrating Handmade Canberra’s tenth birthday! Ten years ago, the first Handmade market was held in Albert Hall with 30 stallholders and 2,000 visitors. Having outgrown four venues, Handmade’s home is now at EPIC, with 260 stallholders and over 24,000 visitors. We are very proud of the fact that for all this time, we have been nurturing and promoting Australian small business and have watched many of our wonderful designers and producers grow from small start ups into thriving commercial enterprises. To show our appreciation to our followers and shoppers, we will be giving away a $100 gift card every hour of the market! All you have to do is make a minimum $20 purchase to put your name in our hourly draw, so you might come away with a lot more Australian designs and produce than you bargained for! We have also been collaborating with our wonderful Handmade family to bring you ten exclusive and limited edition products for our ten years. These ten products represent the best of Australian design. Each has been handmade with an Australian theme in mind and are only available at the October Handmade Market. We are very proud that so many wonderful Australian designers and producers have chosen Handmade as their only home in Canberra. Throughout this issue, you will see our little icon that tells you who is “Exclusive to Handmade” and you will know that you can’t find these products anywhere else in the capital region. Elsewhere in this edition, take a look at some of the wonderful designers creating stylish homewares, covetable art, slow fashion, glittering accessories and children’s treasures. Find out what to buy for the man who has everything and review the mouthwatering food and drink on offer in our Gourmet Food Hall. We also have a peek at our ten birthday products and a chat about the Handmade designs inspired by bees. Enjoy, and we’ll see you at the Market! 3

In contrast to the throw away fashion of the high street, the designers we have selected for the October market prefer their fashion slow. Using recycled fabrics, eco dyes and local supplies, this selection will bring you serious style with serious intentions.

our birthday presents
We are very excited about our tenth birthday. So much so that we’ve decided to collaborate with some of our wonderful designers and producers to create ten exclusive and limited edition products to celebrate. You can see the full range on the Handmade website. These products are only available at the October Handmade Market and in the online stores of the designers and producers. Louise M Studio created a beautiful luxe ceramic cup, hand crafted from porcelain, and glazed in our exclusive blue with a touch of gold luxe. We love our line drawing of the Telstra Tower so much that we asked Little Noisy Miner to turn it into a limited edition print. Soul & Ark has blended the scents of wattle and native flowers to produce a subtle aroma in a beautiful amber jar with double wick and wooden lid. Weathered Garden Art designed some eucalyptus leaves for us and turned them into a garden ornament with aged finish. Base soaps combined their tea tree and lemon myrtle soaps with an exclusive indigo bar, scented with citrus and eucalyptus.

Miss Mollys’ Dolls have beautifully hand painted a wooden doll with wattle flowers and eucalyptus leaves, topped off with a pretty hat. Jasper + Myrtle created an exclusive and limited edition chocolate bar made from Australian blueberries and rich dark chocolate. Tea Garden Co has combined blackberries, apple and a hint of ginger, to create our very own Handmade tea. For a bit of EX C E CBR fun, we asked Missy Minzy to illustrate some of the capital’s icons as temporary tattoos. And you’ll definitely need a bag to put all of these purchases into. The Handmade paper tote is the perfect size, combining style and sustainability, with our Telstra Tower design in a striking pattern. TO H A

buzzing with ideas The humble bumble bee has been in the news a lot recently. Bees are amongst the most important creatures to humans on earth. These amazing insects pollinate over 80% of all flowering plants including 70 of the top 100 human food crops. One in three bites of food that we eat is derived from plants pollinated by bees. So it’s no surprise that keeping them healthy and abundant is a top priority for Australian producers. Australian small bee keepers are passionate about their hives and their tiny inhabitants that do such good work. And Handmade is very proud to welcome some of them to each market with their delicious honey, bees wax candles and skin care products. Beeswax is a by-product of the honey making process that would be wasted if not used. With the damage that plastic is doing to the environment, beeswax wraps are a viable alternative. The warmth from your hands softens the wraps just enough to allow them to stick and the natural anti-bacterial properties of bees wax make this a hygienic and environmentally friendly way to keep food fresh. All of our bee related producers will be very happy to chat to you at the market about their processes and the origins of their products. Have a chat, and you’ll come away loving these buzzy creatures as much as they do. 20
Wax paper wraps from Wrappa and Honey Bee Wraps are practical, plastic-free and effective. Whipped honey by Happy B is infused with fruits and spices. Beeswax candles (and skincare) by locals, Honey & Glow, are a bi-product of their honey production. Ornamental bees by Broadcroft Design make a buzz in the garden.
