Winter is upon us, but the Handmade team sees this as an opportunity, not a problem. It’s in our Winter season that Canberra comes into its own. We love pulling on our boots, wrapping up in our coats (between us, we have an extensive collection!) and watching our breath in the misty air. We love sipping on great coffee, eating Canberra’s best warming dishes and gazing at the spectacular sunsets. To accommodate this weather change, the Handmade Market leads the way in Winter fashion, accessories and homewares. Hunt among the 220 designer stalls for blankets, knitwear and warming food staples for the larder. On Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th June, Handmade Canberra will again present the best in homewares, fashion, gourmet produce and gifts at Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC). Two halls will be packed with beautiful designs made by Australian artisans, delicious food and an unbeatable atmosphere of creativity and excitement. In the pages of this magazine, we bring you the facts and figures of Canberra’s most gorgeous market. We tell you who is new and guide you through the details that will make your visit easy and fun, fully listing the designer stalls. We show you the best of what Canberra has to offer this Winter so you can combine your market trip with wandering around our beautiful city. Please enjoy, and see you at the market.

New at the market.. . With a range of fresh new faces at the Handmade Market in June, we are excited about the new homewares that will be on show. Zillpa (left) will make a Handmade debut, with a range made of 100% cotton rope, which is sewn together on an industrial sewing machine, making for fun yet stylish accessories. Maya Muse Textiles (right) combines the raw beauty of linen, the unique characteristics of the hand screen printing process and Australian inspired prints to create beautiful textiles for the home. The Floral Society is an innovative flower business with a shop front in Kingston and a sophisticated online ordering system, from which you can purchase your fix of in-season flowers.

Kim Aitken will be attending June’s market with her unique ceramic pieces. While she hasn’t been at the market for a year, the popularity of her little ceramic masterpieces stems from having something for everyone’s taste and colour scheme.

Crayon Chick (left) will also be attending the Handmade Market for the first time. Combing “old crafts with new tricks,” this range of homewares and accessories is sure to delight you.

We are very excited to have teamed up with them to host some floral workshops. With three classes on Saturday 11th June and three more on Sunday 12th June, you can choose from hand held posies to floral crowns. Details and booking links can be found on the Handmade blog.

The Local Larder Canberra is a unique retail concept, opening in late 2016 in the heart of Canberra’s CBD. Dreamed up by the award winning team from Handmade Canberra, it aims to present in one stunning space the best that the Canberra region has to offer in wines, gourmet produce and design.

The Local Larder will combine this product offering with an atmospheric café focusing on local ingredients to make healthy and wholesome food with both a dine-in and take away offering. Settle by the fire for a glass of local wine and a plate to share, or come in early for your coffee and warm muffin, taking away a gourmet sandwich, salad or soup to have later.

When the news came in that Shop Handmade’s building was going to be torn down, Julie & Rachel debated long and hard about whether to relocate their amazing concept store or take a leap into a new venture. For years, Julie has had this concept in her mind and now seemed like the perfect opportunity to put it into practice!

The Local Larder is also aiming to raise the profile of the Canberra wine region as a centre of excellence by stocking a range of local wines, allowing locals and tourists to taste the best of the region without having to travel around. Once The Local Larder is established, the team is planning to host wine tastings, publish tasting notes and host meet the winemaker sessions, bringing regional wines into the city.

Canberra is fast becoming a foodie destination. New restaurants open every week and we all know that Canberra has the world’s best coffee. But it’s not just the eateries that are excelling. There are almost 140 wineries in the region and dozens of producers with beautiful artisan fayre such as olive oil, chutneys, vinegars, bread, flowers, meat & dairy products and truffles, to name a few. Through Handmade, Julie & Rachel have made contact with and mentored hundreds of local designers who craft beautiful homewares, textiles, souvenirs and accessories. This puts them in the ideal position to open The Local Larder, focusing on the region’s produce and designs in a unique, inviting and beautiful space.

12

And of course, with Handmade’s reputation for supporting innovation in design, there will be a wide selection of homewares, gifts and produce that will complete your shopping experience. Visit The Local Larder’s website www.thelocallarder.com.au to subscribe for news and updates as they happen, or head over to our social media pages. See you there!
