WELCOME There is nowhere like Canberra. We brag about our beautiful city more with each passing year, and constantly field the negativity from elsewhere about the politicians, the roundabouts and the cold. But have you breathed the fresh higher-altitude air of Winter? Have you seen the immense azure sky? In Canberra, we get to wear Winter coats and boots, we see the patterns made by frost, we hibernate in our cosy homes and we have the best coffee and food on our doorstep. What’s not to love? We have all that AND we have the Handmade Market, Canberra’s biggest market event, which is coming back on 10 & 11 June for its Winter celebration. Finding the must-have knit, the handcrafted blanket or the seasonal spices will be easy among the 250 stalls of Australian made designs and produce on show at Exhibition Park in Canberra over two days of the long weekend. Within the pages of this magazine, we will be showcasing our stallholders for the June Market in each category and highlighting our new offerings. We’ll walk you through the gourmet food hall and give you a taste of our street food. And we’ll be listing all of the stallholders, so you can start to plan your trip to Handmade. The Handmade Market is on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th June, from 10am until 4pm at Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC). Head over to our website for more details, articles and profiles of our designers and producers. www.handmadecanberra.com.au Please enjoy, and we’ll see you at the market.

Base Soaps (left) is a local business, making ethical and natural bars and liquid soaps.

BODY HEAT Soul & Ark is coming to Handmade for the first time with its beautiful range of candles and home fragrances.

Follow the scents to Handmade’s designers that focus on natural, innovative grooming and skincare products. Candles and room scents will create a Winter ambience, while skincare helps to protect from the harsh seasonal winds, and make up and perfume bring the glamour.

Handmade favourite, Delicious Skin (above), combines ethically sourced ingredients with products that work on all skin types. From delicious skin to delicious scents, Amacyn (right) will be showcasing a range of perfume at Handmade for the first time in June.

THE WINTER HOME Handmade’s homewares are designed and made here in Australia by artisans and craftspeople who have been practising their art for many years. There is nothing mass produced about this delightful collection full of pieces that you would be proud to have at home.

Porcelain work from Linogirl (top), concrete from Yano Designs (above) and dinnerware from Hayden Youlley Design (left) form a small part of the ceramics collections on offer at the Handmade Market in June.

Winter warming blankets come from the Merino farm of Leroy Mac (above left). Birdy and Clementine (top right) are back at Handmade with a delicate selection of ceramic homewares. For bright days, beautiful picnic rugs from Emby Love (above) will do the trick. If you’re after a unique piece of furniture, have a look at the stunning printed furniture from Raquel Carabine Design (left).

COOL COLLECTIONS Canberra has a style all of its own, and will be showcasing a number of talented fashion designers over the two days of the market. Winter knits and coats for both men and women will be in evidence, with soft materials that don’t compromise warmth for style. And with more accessories than there are days of Winter, there’s no excuse for walking away empty handed. Wendy Voon creates flowing knitwear, designed with a balance of form, colour and texture to flatter the figure. Dressed for Sunday (below left) is the perfect place to find dashing accessories for him. Jude Artisan Fashion (below right) uses an unexpected combination of materials to make unique clothing for men and women.

Create your own ring stack from silver and gold crafted rings (left) by Appleye. Semi-precious stones are given special treatment by Marit Hamer (below right). Sheep-ish uses Merino wool to create Winter accessories (below left), and statement jewellery completes the look from newcomer Lovebuds.

THE HANDMADE GIFT LIST

Don’t forget the little ones when it comes to gift giving. Babies will love these bunnies from Edge of the Forest (top left). For the slightly older adventurer, Fizzy Pop Designs has a range of nursery art that will add colour and flair (top centre). Don’t forget the wrapping - Pink Paddock Store (above) designs and prints cards and wrap. For the hard to buy for person in your life, try Paper Elephant’s gorgeous letterpress notebooks (top right) or Blossom + Beau’s handcrafted jewellery stands and jewellery (right).

IN THE PANTRY Ingredients for slow cooked dishes and soups have been harvested and packaged in time for June’s market. From condiments and sauces to nuts and spices, your larder will be full of everything you need to create the perfect Winter meal. And don’t forget the wines and spirits to complement your feast. Warmth guaranteed.

Luxurious muesli from Koja Health (top), rich, dark spiced rum chocolate from Jasper + Myrtle (centre), a selection of local wines from Quarry Hill (bottom).

STREET FOOD WARMERS

You will not be disappointed by the crêpes, doughnuts, cannoli, baklava, toffee apples, liquorice and cakes on offer. And coffee will be served by newcomers Four Track Coffee and veterans My Sweet Alice.

It’s important to keep your energy up while shopping, especially when it’s cold outside. Head to Handmade’s gourmet food hall and once you have as many bags as you can carry, stop off at one of the street food vans for a sweet or savoury treat and a warming or thirst quenching drink.

Hot street food will provide fuel over the Handmade weekend. Newcomers, Yummy Thai (far left), will be serving up Asian flavour that packs a punch and The Italian Traveller (left) will have a soup van for fast food with fast energy. Favourites Berlin Bangers, Mr Papa, Kusina, Gourmet Gozleme and Uncle Juan’s Bakehouse (above left) will be ready to serve tasty treats and Jammin’ Jerk will be adding the taste of Jamaica to the menu.

WINTER WORDS Before every market, we contact some new and established designers to ask them what they’re bringing to the Handmade Market and find out a little more about them. For June, we’ve been asking how they like to keep warm in Winter and some of their responses are here. If you would like to read these interviews, head over to the Handmade Blog

Narelle, Fizzy Pop

Lianne, Base Soaps

What’s the best way to keep warm in Winter? First thing on my list is definitely an open fire. Just looking at one and the smell is enough to warm the soul. Along with an open fire, a delicious homemade soup (I’m not fussy but love a good minestrone), a chunky knit, chocolate (of course), a warm mohair blanket...and my family to cuddle...perfect Winter warmers!

Kate, Emby Love 12

I love to keep warm in Winter by finding the perfect picnic spot in full Winter sun and enjoy it in the middle of the day, lazing about and enjoying a warm cup of tea from the thermos and a good book.

Time in front of the fire with my ugg boots and a glass of wine! Cat, Edge of the Forest

Kylie, Pink Paddock Store

A hot chocolate or glass of red in front of the wood fire! What more would you need?

The best way I have found to keep warm in winter is to snuggle with my three year old. She is a little hot water bottle and if she can resist telling me she is hungry for the hundredth time then it’s better than any hot chocolate or warm bath.
