JULY MARKET EDITION

28 & 29 JULY 2018 1

Welcome to Handmade Magazine, Winter edition. While many people dread the Winter season, the Handmade team loves the crisp mornings, the beautiful sunsets and the chance to hibernate. The best place to find everything you need to make your cold season cosy is the Handmade Market at Exhibition Park, Canberra on 28 & 29 July. Our Gourmet Food Hall is the largest indoor food market in Canberra. With dozens of producers happy to talk about the fruits of their labours, offer you tastings and tell their stories, it’s a great place to stock up on seasonal food. Visit the truffle stalls that are part of our special event, the Handmade Truffle Snaffle (page 20) and taste some of the wonderful cool climate wines and boutique distilled spirits in our bar area. Try some of the iconic foods for sale (page 22) and snack on some of the tasty street food (page 24). We are very proud that so many wonderful Australian designers and producers have chosen Handmade as their only home in Canberra. Throughout this issue, you will see our little icon that tells you who is “Exclusive to Handmade” and you will know that you can’t find these products anywhere else in the capital region. Elsewhere in this edition, take a look at our preview of Winter homewares (page 6 ), fashion and accessories (pages 8-11), Winter indulgences (page 12) and products especially for children (page 16) and the growing number of Handmade men (page 18). We’re also reviewing the designers who are putting souvenirs on the map with a beautiful selection of Canberra themed designs (page 14). Start your shopping list here (our directory is on page 25), and we’ll see you at the Market! 3

There was a time when the boys were dragged unwillingly to Handmade, trying to stay out of the way while the girls indulged in some handmade retail therapy. Recently however, we’ve seen a man renaissance at the market, with more men than ever enjoying what Handmade has to offer. From beard oil to beer, here is your low down on the products that will appeal, making the market the perfect place for everyone to shop, eat and relax.

Our July Market falls right in the middle of this year’s truffle season. To celebrate, and to showcase our Gourmet Food Hall (Canberra’s largest indoor food market) we are having our own truffle festival - the Handmade Truffle Snaffle! Come and snaffle local truffles and truffle products on 28 & 29 July in our warm pavilion. Experience the highly distinctive aroma and taste these local jewels for yourself.

Truffles have been captivating us for thousands of years. Always seen as a delicacy, and usually the fayre of the wealthy and elite, the distinctive aroma and heady taste have led to myths and legends. Known as a gift from the gods and the devil’s food and rumoured to form when lightning strikes, this fungus has been credited with fertility, health and supernatural powers. Found among the roots of chestnuts, oaks, hazel and beech trees, the truffle is used to flavour dishes and is still seen as a rare luxury. The first Australian black truffles were harvested in Tasmania in 1999, this date marking the start of a growing and successful truffle industry in this country. Our local cool climate has given rise to a Canberra region truffle producing community, including two local producers who will be at the Handmade Market in July. The Truffle Farm, based on the slopes of Mount Majura not only produces 20

truffles, but also runs truffle hunts and degustation events. The Truffle Farm Canberra is the only commercial truffle farm in the world in a capital city. The Truffle Baron in Sutton also produces black truffles for customers and eateries in the region and beyond. Both will be bringing their produce and experience to the market, so come and chat. If you’re interested in sampling truffle products, head to the Great Southern Truffles stall at the market. Hailing from Western Australia, this family run business is bringing its gourmet range, made from its own truffles including oil, butter, salsa, sauce, mustard, and honey. But it’s not just our specialist producers that are bringing truffle products to the Handmade Market. The Canberra Distillery has partnered with The Truffle Farm to produce a distinctive and delicious local truffle vodka. Taste and buy this unique product in our

drinks area. Kurbside Kitchen will be bringing a touch of the exotic to their spiral spuds. Seasoned with truffle salt, these are sure to be a tasty snack to eat while you shop. Or head to Goose on the Loose for their mouthwatering and popular truffle salami, which is great to taste and take home. Neo Organic Tea has a special blend that includes truffles. Their Coconut Truffle Tea Infusion is a delicious blend of coconut and white tea with a hint of vanilla, truffle and lapacho tea. A high antioxidant tea infusion, this low caffeine tea is delicious hot, iced or with a splash of Malibu for a tasty cocktail. Handmade regulars, Sticky Balsamic, have won a gold medal for their Truffle Balsamic Vinegar. Infused with truffles, this balsamic is made in small batches and won gold at the 2017 Hobart Fine Food Awards.

Truffles in cooking (above) and in their raw state (below). Bottom left: The Canberra Distillery and The Truffle Farm’s Truffle Vodka. Bottom right: Truffle Cannoli.

Head to Cannoli Brothers for a sweet twist. Their truffle and stringy bark honey mascarpone crema will deliciously fill their blonde cannoli shells. With all ingredients local, this will be a fresh and tasty treat to complete your truffle journey at the market.

The gin revolution has seen blends as diverse as butterfly pea and elderflower, and is flourishing all over the world. Canberra has boutique distilleries that specialise in beautiful gin, and we’re also welcoming Original Spirit Co. from Victoria. To mix with your spirits, Grumpy’s Ginger Beer will be at the market, serving its spicy, sweet and utterly delicious brew. As a healthy and spicy alternative to coffee, the chai revolution is also gaining momentum. Melbourne based Chai Addict produces a super charged masala chai concentrate that you can enjoy with hot or cold milk or splash into your gin for a delicious cocktail. Part of the Aussie entertaining platter, cold meats have taken a leap with a European staple adopting an Australian twist. French saucisson sec has been expertly brought to Handmade by La Bastide, while Goose on the Loose has combined salami with unique flavours like duck & juniper, pork & truffle, wild boar & fennel and kangaroo & chilli. Krofne will be bringing new fillings to add to their classic jam and Nutella doughnuts, so form an orderly queue for your sweet and still-so-trendy snack. Or if healthy is your aim, oats are the superfood that everyone wants to eat for breakfast. Brushwoods focuses on the production of fresh oats for a super creamy porridge. So add these iconic foods to your bag at the Handmade Market, in the knowledge that you’re a fashionable foodie.
