Appreciating British Craftsmanship

Dear Friends, I am very pleased to welcome you to Handmade in Britain 13: The Contemporary Crafts & Design Fair, for its 7th year at Chelsea Old Town Hall. This weekend, we present the best of British contemporary design and craftsmanship from over 100 designer-makers in disciplines across fashion and home accessories, all under one beautiful roof. At this year’s show we introduce an exciting new element, our New Graduate Showcase. Five emerging makers have been selected for the first Showcase, presenting innovation in design and dedication to their craft. In the main show, we welcome more makers than ever before, with some joining us for the first time and many who are familiar to the show and return to us for another year with their new collections. The show is, as always, a wonderful excuse to treat yourself, your friends and family to something special, just in time for Christmas. Every designer here presents work available for purchase or commission, and offers a unique and memorable shopping experience - a chance to engage with the maker. The true value of your purchases can only be enriched by the stories and processes that accompany them, so please take full advantage of this opportunity. I wish you an enjoyable weekend. Yours sincerely,

Richard Heeley Stand 44

New Graduate Showcase: a celebration of emerging talent

This year we are very proud to welcome 5 exceptional makers to the New Graduate Showcase, a dedicated gallery of emerging talent in design and craftsmanship. Over the past 6 years of our Chelsea show, new graduates have been welcomed to exhibit alongside established makers, learning from fellow exhibitors and jumping in at the deep end of what for many was their first professional show. This year we celebrate new talent in greater focus, and encourage a discovery and appreciation for the work of these skilled graduate makers. Handmade in Britain exists to support and promote designer-makers and we are passionate about working with young makers and graduates. Through the Showcase, we offer selected makers the opportunity to present their work to you at an affordable cost in a supportive environment. As a part of the Showcase, each maker is welcomed into our support programme and receives guidance through a specialised workshop offering valuable advice in preparing for the show and towards successful future careers. The selected makers are all graduates of 2012 or 2013. They have proven dedication to their discipline and skill in their practice and present to you quality work that explores beauty, function and innovation. The graduates will show their work for sale or commission on the stage of the main hall for the duration of Handmade in Britain 13. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet the makers at the very beginning of their careers and we are incredibly excited to present their work to you.

Amelia Gibbs Textiles “My work is centered on hand-making and craftsmanship which is what Handmade in Britain completely encompasses, so I think it will be a great fit.”

Amelia Gibbs is due to start an MA at the Royal College of Art this September having graduated from Loughborough with a BA in Textiles: Innovation and Design earlier in the year. Her distinctive work is influenced by the detail in nature and is created with free machine embroidery, flowing forms and intricate cutwork, all hand dyed and painted. Amelia uses an Irish sewing machine for embroidery - an old and rare industrial machine which allows complete control and freedom for the artist, and has been cultivating this skill towards her own style since the age of 16. Amelia’s current work is a collection of delicate, handmade silk scarves, each one completely unique. amelia@ameliagibbs.co.uk www.ameliagibbs.co.uk

Elaine Bolt Ceramics Anna Byers Jewellery “It’s an amazing opportunity for me and I am very excited about exhibiting alongside such creative and talented designers.” Since graduating last year with an MA in Jewellery Design from London Metropolitan University, Anna Byers Jewellery has launched 3 collections carrying a distinctive and bold geometric style. Anna’s work is inspired by the architecture of temples, mosques and cathedrals, particularly those visited whilst living and working in Jerusalem. Anna’s ‘Interactive’ collection features multi-layered pieces that can be rotated and rearranged, inviting the wearer to create their own unique compositions. info@annabyers.com www.annabyers.com 07834 863654

“One of the joys of exhibiting at a craft show such as Handmade in Britain is the opportunity to hear the ideas viewers have about the objects I make, and to find out what thoughts and memories are evoked by the shapes and compositions I use.” Elaine graduated with an MA from the University of Creative Arts in 2012 and has exhibited at numerous exhibitions since 2011. Working in thrown porcelain and terracotta she creates soft, inviting forms contrasting with dark and semi-enclosed interiors. Elaine’s work suggests secluded spaces, and emphasises contrasts in interior and exterior, dark and light. Influenced by her background as an archivist, Elaine is drawn to forming collections and groupings within her work, exploring “a sense of narrative” that implies hidden functions and obscure histories. www.elainebolt.com Boltceramics@gmail.com 07811524334

Felix Proctor Interior Accessories “I think it will be a fantastic showcase of what people are making now.”

Peter Kucerik Glass & Lighting Design “I am extremely happy to be part of the Handmade in Britain exhibition.”

With an interest in “domesticating the industrial”, Felix has created a series of objects which stretch the conventions of materials and objects through approaching functionality from a different angle. Felix graduated from the University of Brighton this year, after studying for a BA in Fine Art Sculpture. The series he exhibits at Handmade in Britain 13 includes concrete bowls and plywood salad tongs. 07501302608 felix.proctor@live.co.uk www.felixproctor.co.uk

Peter Kucerik studied Three Dimensional Design, specializing in glass at the University of Creative arts in Farnham and graduated this year. Peter’s collection of glass lighting features sculptural pieces which respond to both nature and digital technology. A childhood interest in organic forms and time spent exploring the Slovak mountains are visible elements in works inspired by the crystalline geometry in the natural world and modern architectural design. 07517975547 kucerikpeter@yahoo.com www.peterkucerik.com

I am a designer and maker of hand crafted fine furniture for the home or workplace. It gives me great satisfaction to deliver a finished piece knowing its entire history: from the idea and design, to the purchase of the raw materials, the cutting, the shaping and the finishing that finally leads to a new creation. Whether created to last for generations, to make the most of a space, or simply to please, hand crafted furniture endures way beyond the moment and is something anyone can own and treasure.

03

I design and produce glass platters, vessels, and lighting. My inspiration is fuelled by my Dorset coastal retreat with its brightly striped beach paraphernalia, and found objects like ammonites, feathers, and leaves. I work mainly to commission on my lighting projects, working with architects and interior designers.

My range includes silver and gold jewellery for both women and men, from the highly dramatic to fine delicate pieces. I form many of them from hand-textured, fine silver sheet or coil pieces from single lengths of fine silver wire. Colour is introduced with gold and oxidized silver detail. Since graduating from the Royal College of Art, I have exhibited widely in the UK, Europe, Japan, and the USA.

04

The inspiration for my jewellery comes from my early contact with gemstones while in Australia, where my father mined sapphires. I spent six years as a gem cutter and later studied jewellery design and making in Sydney. I continue to visit the sapphire mines to meet the miners and cutters, which gives me the unique opportunity to access such rare and beautiful gems. New this year I am working on a collection that includes rose-cut diamonds and sapphires setting them in forged gold and silver. I have worked to commission from my London studio for over 20 years.

Leto & Ariadne Textiles

I am a hand-weaver working on traditional wood-framed looms, creating fabrics which are meant to be used; to be worn, handled and feel comfortable against the skin. I use only natural fibres such as silk and wool that work with the body to provide warmth and tactile reassurance. All work is done by hand in the studio, from the initial winding of the warp, through to the hand finishing. Combining classic style with bold colours, my scarves were described by an article in Selvedge Magazine as allowing the wearer to ‘reconnect with a lost sense of Englishness’.

Alison Lowry Glass

www.alisonlowry.co.uk

Alison is an award winning glass artist living and working in Belfast. She is inspired by objects and antique Irish textiles. This fascination with lace and embroidery started with some family ‘heirlooms’, a collection of beautiful and intricate Irish white work hand made by female relatives generations ago. Alison exhibits locally and internationally and her work is held in several public collections.

Bob Johnston Sculpture www.bobjohnstonbaskets.co.uk

Bob creates contemporary willow sculptures and structures. Initially trained as a textile weaver, he has since studied with master basket makers in Ireland and Villaines les Rochers in France. He creates contemporary showpiece willow animal structures which are both life size and realistic, each piece is woven by hand and completely unique.

We are the sector lead body for the contemporary craft industry in Northern Ireland. We promote and support contemporary craft and applied arts through a variety of initiatives. The makers on show as part of Handmade in Britain are some of the best contemporary craft makers in Northern Ireland, including Alison Lowry Glass; Bob Johnston, willow sculptures; Eamonn Higgins, metal sculptures; Julie Scott Ceramics and Mark Hanvey, Furniture and wood products.

Eamonn, a sculptor working mainly in steel, draws his inspiration from his Northern Irish heritage. The natural landscape is reflected in his textural explorations in combined metals while his figurative sculptures explore the social and historic complexities of contested rural communities.

Julie Scott Ceramics

Julie is a figurative, ceramic artist practicing in Northern Ireland. She recently completed a BA Honours in Fine and Applied Art (Ceramics) gaining first class honours from the University of Ulster. Her work mainly consists of three dimensional ceramic sculptures that are influenced by drawings. Julie exhibits at various events and exhibitions and also takes private commissions.

Mark Hanvey Furniture www.markhanvey.co.uk

Mark has been working with wood for 25 years, both at the lathe and the bench. His work embodies a deep respect for the material which he loves, and he strives to connect with the purist elements of wood. Mark’s work can be found in both public and private collections in Ireland and abroad, including the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin.

Making unique tableware and one-off vessels, I combine elegant glazes with specially blended textured clay. Minimal, but soulful pieces often centered on the serving and sharing of food, I keep in mind clean lines, simplicity of form, lightness of weight, and Asian influence. Creating work that is calming to its audience is a great wish of mine and I hope that each piece I produce is both beautiful in its own right and in sympathy when standing within a larger group.

09

I design and make bold, limited-edition jewellery in precious metal and mixed-media. My sterling silver disc, tube, cube and gold dot pieces combine traditional metalwork techniques such as forging and milling with a contemporary, minimalist design, incorporating clean lines, magnetic clasps and cotton cord. My hand-knit collection comprises three-dimensional shapes which have been formed from hand-knitted fine silver and re-created as wearable and precious art.

My work is about simple and calm forms, a combination of porcelain’s natural whiteness and colour. I throw my porcelain pieces on a potter’s wheel and use coloured slips to finish them. I like to make coloured slips myself, then I can mix the desired colour. My ceramic pieces are for daily use, like cups, saucers and different sizes of bowls. I get inspiration from traditional, old-fashioned ceramics; I also like to collect ceramics from old manufacturers.

11

I designed the fun and games collection drawing inspiration from iconic arcade games. The two-dimensional pixelated qualities of video games lend themselves perfectly to binary design systems in double cloth weave structures. I use specialist cad software to create the weave structures, this enables me to create very long patterns, where required. Within each scarf I have worked with two colours of either simultaneous or extreme contrast creating unusual two colour combinations, whilst employing black and white for the ultimate contrast. Each silk scarf is individually hand woven allowing me the ultimate control of warp and weft colour mixing.

13

I design and make limited edition jewellery, combining lapidary work with silver-smithing techniques. I apply sculptural techniques to my designs and work, hand-cutting and finishing my gemstones, sometimes with sterling silver forged or fused on to them. My handmade beads in precious metals are as important as the stones as they mirror and accentuate the shapes and patterns in the stones. I cut most of my stones in Peru, selecting and cutting pieces from the main rocks and turning them into beads in the shapes I design.

Slicing the walls of hand-thrown forms has led to a unique way of exploring the design of both sculptural and functional ceramics. This is a distinctive body of work conveying movement, dance, attitudes and emotions and providing resilient tableware along the way. Each piece can elicit various different interpretations, memories or associations personal to the viewer. Encouraging conversations with the public, I acknowledge the user’s part in the creative process in informing future work. Whether for the table, the mantelpiece or the wall, this hand-thrown work is unique.

14

It is important to me to make pots that are both individual and functional. This collection of thrown and turned tableware is inspired by an unusual medieval mug and the patinated surfaces found in my East London environment. The striking designs incorporate the tactile qualities of stoneware with a palette of gloss black and white glazing with a rich crystalline crackle green that has matt black and rust detailing. Becoming a ceramicist changed my life. I enjoy each pot I make and they give people a moment to relish the simple pleasures of life each time they use it.

I strive to produce beautifully made simple, elegant and contemporary pieces of jewellery which are easily wearable today and will remain so for years to come; using subtle, delicate colours of precious metals, vitreous enamels and precious stones. The sensitive use of surface textures with simplicity of form is important, keeping the design sophisticated and timeless.

18

I make domestic ware in Maiolica; the tin-glazed earthenware brought to Europe by the Moors. It is the folk and Islamic origins of Maiolica that inspire me and which I seek to interpret in a modern idiom in pieces that are mostly one-off yet functional. Some current themes in my work are women in advertising, Elizabethan royalty and Inuit folk tales.

19

My jewellery is characterised by sculptural forms and richly textured surfaces. Each hand-crafted piece is the result of an experimental and intuitive use of materials within a carefully considered form. The warmth of gold, manipulated to appear worn by time, is often juxtaposed with blackened silver and semi-precious stones and minerals. When precious stones such as diamonds, rubies and sapphires are used, they are usually unpolished and uncut in celebration of the natural surfaces of the land.

21

I create luxurious, unique pleated silk accessories, made using the traditional Japanese technique of Arashi Shibori. My multi-layered range of scarves, boas and stoles are exotic and glamorous, light and warm. Each piece is hand-dyed and hand-pleated. Their sculptural volume and organic shapes, together with their subtle yet complex colours are reminiscent of many natural forms, and are visually captivating, as well as luxurious to wear.

22

I am a British potter who throws studio bowl, bottle and vase forms in porcelain or stoneware which are simple but striking and gain their identity from their size, choice of clay and embellishment. My work is firmly established in the British studio pottery school – each piece is one-off and made by me using British materials and equipment. Each piece also decides its own final result – either the stained stoneware bleeds oxides through the matte, stiff glazes or the brilliant, fluxing blue green and red colours flow over the porcelain, resulting in work that is unique, arresting and bold.

I like to explore precious metals natural qualities, and how it reacts to different techniques, this has been the source for many of my ideas. Letting the material have a life of its own, shapes and ideas can be suggested through the making process, and followed through to their natural conclusion. Contrast is used to create a visual palette, rough/smooth, texture/polished, black/white, the metal becomes a painterly/sculptural material. Forging techniques prepare the section used, and shape the object, in which the surface retains all marks of the creative act.

25

My design philosophy is to create exquisite accessories to cherish. The collections comprise a range of luxurious silk scarves, brooches and purses, adorned with textile prints inspired by my sketchbook drawings and illustrations. My prints are rich in lyrical narrative, blending floral, avian and nautical imagery with literary references to poetry and fairytales. Each piece is digitally printed and hand finished with care in Britain. I work from my studio in Trewidden Gardens, Cornwall, where the gardens and coastline inspire many of my drawings and designs. I have also worked as a freelance costume designer for nearly a decade, and am a lecturer at Falmouth University.

I make elegant, timeless jewellery always taking into account the visual aesthetic and fine craftsmanship of each piece. I make one-of-a-kind jewellery using coloured gold or silver combined with precious and semiprecious stones and beads. My work can be found in major public jewellery collections and is also featured in many books.

26

The majority of my work is about portraying different emotions and feelings by combining various precious metals and manipulating their many qualities to express the intentions. Silver is seen as an enduring metal, whereas steel rusts; eats itself away and is not seen as precious. Where necessary the steel has been preserved with bees wax to protect itself.

My distinctive jewellery reflects my joy in exploring natural forms through drawing. I am particularly fascinated by the textures, patterns and shapes seen in plankton, tiny seeds and microscopic flora and fauna. Each piece of jewellery has been inspired by sketches made at Kew Gardens, the Natural History Museum or during walks in the countryside around my home. I work in silver and gold, hand fabricating each design using a mixture of techniques such as piercing, forging and carving. Much of my work is given a dark, lustrous finish using oxidization and small details are highlighted with a polish.

29

My versatile and elegant jewellery is created by using only the finest materials, simple shapes and clever detailing. I love to work in 18 carat gold using coloured gemstones, pearls and diamonds. I work from my atelier and shop in 30 Old Church Street, Chelsea.

My work is predominantly made from turned, carved, coloured and textured wood. I make a variety of functional items including salt and pepper mills and bottle stoppers and more whimsical sculptural pieces. Some work I have made has been in collaboration with jeweller Sarah Parker-Eaton. My pieces have a very organic feel, inspired by the incredible forms, beautiful patinas and intricate textures found in seed pods, sea creatures, and insects. Details are added with the addition of metal and acrylic resin.

30

What I love about weaving is that I am constructing a cloth from a collection of threads. I hand weave scarves and shawls using a variety of natural materials including silk and merino wool. The silk gives me beautiful strong colours to work with and I love to combine these with the structure of the cloth to produce different effects. I also use highly twisted yarns. These yarns have a life of their own and channeling that energy by use of the weave structure to create pleated and crinkle effects has long been a fascination for me.

I work mainly in 18 carat gold and silver with diamonds and other gemstones, experimenting with various surfaces including etching and engraving. My work has developed around early astronomer’s models including orreries, spheres, rotations, and spherical sections which continue to inspire the forms I use. I aim to make my jewellery engage from a distance as well as close up, using movement, rotation, and linkage often combined with hidden elements which can only be discovered by the hand.

33

Trained as a fine artist in painting, drawing and sculpture. I have always had a passion for paper and natural materials, especially leather. My Great Grandfather was a leather worker in Ireland. I have been making and designing my own products for 30 years - a wonderfully creative time. My work always sings, with a great array of colour and texture. Simplicity in form where less is more, makes for timeless pieces which are both wonderful to live with and functional as part of ones daily life. I work in porcelain to produce elegant, contemporary ceramics, from small bowls to large platters. Most pieces are thrown and partially glazed, using a limited palette of simple lines and marks; scribbled, scored, painted and splashed.

34

The core inspiration of this body of work is a celebration and dedication to the immense beauty of the natural world. Inspirations stem from places that captivate and hold an emotional and visual pull, from certain areas of coast, reef, field, and wood; to the uninhibited growth of corals, lichens, fungi and flowers. I will be exhibiting a new range of beautiful, hand crafted one-off porcelain sculptures and jewellery composed from porcelain and precious metal clay and interwoven with a mix of precious and semi-precious stones and fresh water pearls.

Inspiration comes from a diverse spectrum, but form and shape remain at the core of the designs, and I strive to create an enduring elegance in each hat, even in the most casual styles.

With a delicate throwing technique, combined with a fluid glazing style, I have created a unique and distinctive collection of domestic and studio porcelain. My work was first inspired by living in and training on the potter’s wheel in Japan. I then brought these influences back to my studio in London and developed a series of thrown pieces based on my time in Japan, combined with my love of porcelain and glazing.

38

I produce a distinctive range of contemporary kiln-formed products, including interior accessories, art glass wall panels and jewellery. My work makes use of metal oxides and metal leaf fired to a high temperature, to create intricate patterns within the glass. The nature of the process I use, sometimes assembling directly into the kiln, means that although shapes and colours can be repeated, no two finished pieces are ever the same.

My designs are developed on the Llyn Peninsula in North Wales where I spend a quarter of my working year landscape painting, drawing, and cooking. My wife is a professional chef, so we have fun designing dishes and using ceramics in the kitchen every day. I strive for minimalist designs that sit harmoniously within the pots’ composition - fluid lines working with the thrown form and proud brush strokes speaking quietly. A love of landscape, oriental ceramic traditions, and practical durability of porcelain for everyday use, form the heart of my practice.

46

Torn Edge’s two designers, Amelia Newton and Anna Newton, will be exhibiting hand embossed framed prints and greeting cards. Their designs are minimalistic, often verging on abstract. Many designs are monochrome but some also have flat colours, which enhance the designs independently of embossing. Recently Torn Edge launched a collection of velvet cushions. These cushions sit happily in both modern and traditional interiors due to their simplicity, clean lines and restrained colour use.

I create sculptural bowls, vessels and forms in wood from British trees. My work combines traditional craftsmanship with exquisite natural material and a creative approach to making. The vessels are turned initially on a lathe using centuries-old techniques and hand-held tools, with a distinctly contemporary feel for shape and design. Each piece is unique, finished to the highest quality and may have undergone up to thirty different processes. After chain-sawing and turning to shape, I may carve, sandblast, scorch, bleach or microwave the forms depending on the effect I am trying to achieve.

49

I am fascinated by horizons, the vanishing point where the land merges with the sky. Glass is the ideal medium to express this idea of continual change since its properties are inherently mutable, not only in its molten state but also in the way the play of light creates endless nuances in the finished piece. I have been working with blown glass for more than 25 years, developing self taught methods. This year I moved my studio to Surrey where I teach and make glass with a passion. I enjoy making small functional pieces as much as large sculptural work.

I am a graduate of the RCA and have worked as a studio jeweller for twenty years. My style can be described as ‘contemporary classic’; strong, feminine, detailed, and tactile. Award-winning, signature pieces are highly decorative, ‘Charm’ Bracelets and ‘Cluster’ Pendants. Past commissions include movies: Harry Potter and War Horse and cuff links for No. 10 Downing Street. I have been made a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths.

Gold artifacts from antiquity, Ancient Egypt and South American cultures have greatly influence my work. Particularly Middle Eastern gold wire patterns and colour combinations. These led to the development of my Stacking Rings series that is a design format that uses multiple bands worn as a group. NBBY – NG is the collection of fold-formed work made by designer-maker, Nettie Birch, of NG Jewellery. My fold-formed jewellery pieces are created by allowing metals to move naturally rather than forcing shapes upon them. The pieces reflect organic forms and sweeping shapes. Using the malleability of copper and, more unusually, the strength and lightness of aluminum, I make large sculptural pieces and smaller items for more every day wear. Fold-forming was developed by Charles Lewton-Brain in the 1980’s. It folds sheet metal and then compressing it by hammering or mechanical means, unique shapes are created once the folds are opened.

Much of my work focuses on surface decoration, collage and juxtaposition. The vessel is a starting point for exploration of shape, and an interest in the sense of repair and assemblage has informed my method of construction over several years. The result is multi-faceted pots, rich in movement, energy and aesthetic value. Current research into 18th Century tea caddies is adding another dimension to my forms, in particular inspiring an oval shape yet still encompassing several individual panels. Other references include dressmaking patterns and text, maps, boats; and my colour palette draws inspiration from the clouds and the landscape.

57

My collection of hand-printed, pleated scarves and wraps are inspired by the colour, texture, light and shadow in the natural environment. The pleated and textured details span a range of fabrics from voile to fleece and are seductively tactile! My unique leather belts are printed and stitched using carefully chosen Art Deco buckles, each one a mini collectable. The sumptuous colour palette includes aubergine, citrus, verdant, lapis and sahara. Pleats are permanent and scarves are hand washable.

I spin all my own wool. All the fleeces come from British sheep: Max Logthans (brown), Shetlands (brown, grey, black), Herdwicks (grey), and Hebrideans (black). All the wool is undyed. The rugs/hangings are tapestry woven on a frame loom and the designs are true to the nature of weaving. When finished I wash and moth-proof every rug. Each rug is approximately 150 x 75cm. I can join the rugs together lengthwise to make a hardwearing stair carpet or I can join them together along their surround to make a larger rug. 8 can make a 3m square carpet.

I offer a personal service designing and making contemporary furniture for those wanting something special. In designing my idea is for furniture to be complementary to its surroundings. By keeping the lines simple and picking up details from the immediate environment my furniture can suit any style of home. My approach to making is to use long established traditional constructional methods blended with other techniques made possible by modern machinery and materials. I prefer to work with sustainably grown temperate hardwoods such as oak, ash, maple and cherry but will use tropical woods of certified origin.

Working from my South London studio, I have created a collection of handmade contemporary jewellery for both men and women in 18 carat gold and sterling silver with a variety of precious stones. Many elements are hand pressed and then transformed into repeatable components to be translated into bracelets, necklaces, earrings, etc. Natural organic shapes and marine life inspire the collection, with an emphasis on three-dimensional form and colour. Pieces are either limited edition or one off.

61

The hand-drawn marine and floral themed designs of my porcelain are quintessentially “English with a twist” and are eminently collectable. Each hand-crafted piece is sensitively decorated with an authentic drawing executed in ceramic oxide pencils. My work is featured in galleries stretching from the Orkneys’ to the Channel Islands and Germany, and bespoke designs are currently sold by the British Museum. I am interested in perspectives and am intrigued by the way an ordinary everyday scene can be transformed by the seasons, growth, change or decay and the way in which light or the absence of it can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. I like to use layers of colour, or shades of the same colour to illustrate this change in mood and the interplay of light and shade on the landscape and the effect it has on us. Kiln fired wall panels, pictures and dishes, individually made, combine coloured glass with my own photographic images fused within.

62

This range of silver jewellery has been developed through the potential of wire which I love using both as a feature and as the central structure of the pieces. My “Melting” silver candlesticks are inspired by melting, metal, movement, and memory. The fluid, gravity defying forms are individually created from 925 silver or silver-plated bronze or brass. Whilst appearing to be seamless polished forms, they are actually composed of many elements, some cast using the lost wax process and others cut from stock metal. Many hours of polishing are required to finish each candlestick. Designs range from free-standing pieces with random drips to more surreal pieces that incorporate antique books, gems, glass, or semi-precious stones.

My work, which includes silver jewellery and wooden framed pieces, is inspired by the garden and the creative process of gardening. Working predominantly in silver, with gold, semi-precious stones and enamel, I use simple geometric shapes to create boundaries for natural creations such as leaves, plants and flowers. The larger boxed pieces give me free rein to tell a story, drawn from experience or observation, by playing with combinations of metal, paper collage and objets trouvés. As with my jewellery I strive to capture that sense of a fleeting moment in time, of momentary recollection.

70

I am inspired by the simplicity of shape and reflective light, creating encapsulated raw-brushed and unpolished ‘vessel’ forms. With fleeting references to nature, each piece is spontaneous; sympathetically composed and explores the ethereal qualities of the material used. I strive to create pieces that are sculptural; characterized with a rare sensibility towards the drawn line. The marriage of silver and fragile elements, accents of etched paper, feathers and knitted silver/gold wire strands, transform into unique sculptural pieces. The wearer of a ‘St-Ringell’ is to enjoy each piece like a precious sculptural delight. A moment of wonder!

My style combines different materials and textures to create unique, one-off pieces. In addition, by mixing old and new materials together, I can offer to re-use and re-invent family jewellery and precious heirlooms. My passion for good solid design crosses into architecture, interiors and products where I draw on inspiration expressed through minimal jewellery creations. I hope they go some way in making excellent British design accessible to a wider audience for more people to love and enjoy!

81

My designs are essential forms abstracted from nature. The Caviar Collection started with a pebble, which became the inspiration for the first piece - a ring, cast in silver, from the original stone. The designs have progressed from there, and I have created an organic collection, which keeps growing. To introduce a subtle hint of colour and texture, to abstract from the idea of a pebble, I use tiny coloured glass balls, embedded into a black cold clay. When catching the light, the glass gives a subtle shimmer, and reveals its colour, creating a quietly luxurious feel.

My work engages in a kind of domestic surrealism, somewhere between the Mad Hatter’s tea party and the elaborate table settings of the Brighton Pavilion. It is a representation of ordinary things as a highly decorated sculptural installation. The starting point of my project is the appropriation of typical domestic objects, which I recycle to create new hybrid objects semi-functional, but can be interpreted as representations of well-known domestic objects. My use of familiar domestic wares evokes memories from the past and these memories are generally subjective and often based solely on a personal feeling.

82

My main inspiration comes from the natural environment; I am fascinated by the forms, colours and textures that can be found in the ever changing natural world. I am particularly influenced by eroded and decayed forms and surfaces which I incorporate into my hand-raised bowls and jewellery. Using techniques such as etching, patination and reticulation, I aim to create objects of beauty and imperfection from the decayed and dying influences that inspire my work. I have become fascinated with the processes I use and the unknown effects it can have on metal to create unique pieces.

My work is born of a personal narrative; a very beautiful, articulate kind of social commentary. My ceramic pieces are at first appearances, ornate objects – highly crafted and nostalgic. Upon closer inspection there is a contemporary tension, incorporating toy-like sculptural childhood forms. Treading a careful line between dark and light, I produce provocative works that just err on the right side of light hearted, evolved through processes of hand-building and slip-casting with multi-layered imagery. The pieces are a rich source of contemplation for the viewer, glazed and finished with 9 carat gold and metals.

85

At the heart of my work lies the love of bold colour & graphic pattern. I draw inspiration from handwriting, aerial photography and maps to explore contemporary ideas using traditional textile techniques. My practice has two strands, namely, one-off bespoke quilts; and small batch produced hand-dyed & hand-printed scarves in silks, wool & cashmere.

Creator and curator of curious creatures and whimsical wonders made from wire, vintage, and reclaimed materials. Inspiration comes from fairytales, folklore, and the curiousness of the natural world. Often the creatures that I make are pure figments of my imagination. I try to envisage the oddities that many a Victorian explorer could have encountered on voyages to different lands. These whimsies are then named and labeled. A museum of my own fantasy..

Elegant contemporary jewellery, designed and hand-crafted in Cambridgeshire using precious metals, aluminum and semi-precious gems. My collections are inspired by nature and my travels – the forms, textures and colours of a variety of flowers and landscapes. I combine a number of different techniques in the design and production of the jewellery, to create a range of pieces from the casually simple to the intricate, colourful clusters that include my signature forged flowers. Prices range from £15 to £500. Commissions welcome.

I create a wide range of jewellery focusing on the techniques of wrapping and pressing, often featuring colourful gemstones and diamonds, combined with contrasting colours of metal. I work intuitively manipulating silver and gold using techniques requiring great precision and attention to detail. Inspiration comes from cultural and artistic influences in the places where I have lived. The heat, light and lush flora and fauna of the Bahamas and Egypt, the vibrant fast-paced life of New York and all the rich heritage of Europe now that I am based again in London.

90

I specialize in contemporary studio ceramics, throwing with white earthenware and porcelain, to create 3 bodies of work: aura, hydra and flow. From the calm of hydra to the vibrancy of aura, each has its character; however, a number of factors unify my work and constantly inspire it. I am heavily influenced by simple, bold shapes, clean, contemporary lines and light, elegant forms all of which are consistent across the pieces I make. To compliment this minimal approach, the glazes are pure and clean. Embellishment, if any, encompasses free, spontaneous brush strokes to enhance and emphasise the form.

Inspired by many things from landscapes and nature’s repetitive patterns to stories of fabled creatures, I use a wide range of glass techniques to create the effects I desire in the glass. I work with lost wax casting or fused and slumped glass, painted and gilded with layers, textures, and inclusions. From exotic glowing colours to cool refined mixes. Glass is a truly exciting and inspirational material to work with. It’s very duplicity inspires new ways to work with it, addicting its admirers.

I set architectural inspiration against my egg template to produce astoundingly unique and visually strong jewellery. My work is a continuing dialogue with this form, elements of the collection going on in different directions to form new ideas, such as the new parametric and best twist work. My skill in cutting-edge 3D technology is unique, attracting high praise for the forms and structural quality of the designs. Engineering and problem solving play their part in my designs and my solutions are as much of each piece as the design itself.

Trained originally as a fine art sculptor, I’ve been making bespoke contemporary furniture for the last fifteen years. My creative interests are in the subtle play of natural forms - flow, rhythm, poise, balance - and I strive towards timeless elegance within my conceptual ideas. The natural beauty and variety of hardwood species give me wide scope for creativity, although it is ultimately my individual clients who provide the brief and therefore the personal inspiration. For the last ten years, I’ve also been teaching the next generation of makers in the disciplines of design and craftsmanship in my Oxfordshire workshop.

I’ve always been passionate about leather and determined to be innovative. Having graduated in Footwear and Accessories Design from the London College of Fashion I created the Renush label to use that grounding in traditional design and crafting as the basis for exploring what I could do with this fantastic material. I focus on corsets belts, bags, jewellery, trying at all times to stay original. I became interested in the technique of moulding, which provides endless possibilities for manipulating, sculpting the hide. I believe strongly in using second hand materials, and make use of every inch of the hide.

97

My extensive photography and drawing combines to make unique bespoke designs digitally embedded on to high quality silk georgette, ensuring a beautiful drape for a wearable piece of art. Each silk piece is totally unique, designed by me, produced in the North of England and hand finished.

I am a Jewellery Designer/Maker. My latest work is designed to trigger an interaction between the viewer and the wearer. All the pieces have hidden elements, and/or movement, which are the vehicle to incite the curiosity of the viewer and initiate a conversation with the wearer. In order to capture the viewer’s attention I use different materials, colour contrasts and metal finishes. The revelation of the hidden elements is the surprise that connects the viewer to the wearer, encouraging a personal interaction that may not have happened otherwise.

98

My work constantly changes as the making has been inspired mainly by my interest in techniques. I work in porcelain and stoneware depending on the designs that I refine as I make. The new series I will be showing has been developed with the techniques I’m currently enjoying, throwing and curving. I’m pleased about the bronze glaze perfectly matching the facetted surface. I’d like my work to be used, to be a part of the daily life and to be enjoyed.

My work aims to capture a piece of the incredible natural beauty that surrounds me where I live on the coast of the northwest highlands of Scotland. I use wild plants and seaweeds to create impressed glazed patterns in the handmade clay tiles and larger wall pieces. Some of the work is then fired twice with a second raku firing outdoors. The pieces are removed from the kiln when red hot and smoked in dried leaves to create unique smoked markings. This unpredictable and exciting firing method captures both the fragility and beauty of the natural world to create unique ceramics for your home.

I will be exhibiting a contemporary collection of luxurious knitted accessories including: scarves, shawls, hats & gloves, brooches, cushions & bags. I will also be showing my new collection of Cardicoats & Sweaters. I am working with the finest quality Merino lambs wool and Cashmere yarns. What do you hope to achieve? Steve: We aim to create an online experience that will act as a viable alternative to traditional routes to market that can reach a wider audience. We’d like to change the way people think about engaging with craft and design in the UK.

2 minutes with Steve Entwisle co-founder of createdbespoke.com

created products and designer services

bespoke

createdbespoke is a new online platform, launching in association with Handmade in Britain. What is createdbespoke? Steve: createdbespoke is an online platform through which customers can access exceptional design and craft and which launches later this month. It’s designed to be more engaging than alternative websites and in particular focuses on commissioning. What’s unique about your platform? Steve: Whilst customers can buy ‘ready-designed’ products on createdbespoke, what makes our platform particularly unique is that it has been built around the commissioning process. Our aim is make commissioning easier, more reliable and more accessible to people. People can browse the website for inspiration or contact the createdbespoke team to help them source the right artist for their project, however big or small and createdbespoke puts the processes and technology in place to ensure that the whole experience remains smooth and that customers receive the best service possible. What encouraged you to start createdbespoke? Steve: There are times in the past when I have wanted something made specific to my requirements but I’ve had trouble sourcing the right maker. I’ve had to rely on word of mouth recommendations which have often limited by options. I think to a customer it can often be a daunting experience commissioning a piece and so createdbespoke have been built to break down this barrier. We want to show people the possibilities available to them, and that not all projects need to be huge.

What types of items will customers find on createdbespoke? Steve: We will present to customers a range of exciting artists and products across interior and exterior design, to fashion accessories and jewellery. Most people like to meet the artist, as they do in craft fairs, do you think this will be an issue for createdbespoke? Steve: We understand the importance customers often place on understanding an artist and their processes and so createdbespoke has been designed with this in mind. Each artist has their own microsite where customers can watch a video of the artist at work in their studio, understand how they create their work, and get a sense of what inspires them. If a customer still wants to know more they can just contact the artist directly from their profile page, and if they want to discuss a project further can communicate through integrated video conferencing facilities. What is your role in the team? Steve: My background is in project management, mostly in IT, and so I’m essentially focused on the operations of the business. The core team however brings together a great mix of talents. My daughter, Sunita, is an investment banker and so focuses on finance and retail strategy. Piyush Suri, the founder of Handmade in Britain, is also a director of createdbespoke and he’s the industry expert in our team. But we also draw on a vast array of other specialists from online technology experts to marketing consultants and experienced legal and accountant professionals. We’ve got big plans for createdbespoke and so need a team in place that can deliver this. createdbespoke launches in 2013.
