Welcome to the April edition. As we head towards the spring and summer months, we can look forward to summer fetes, willow on bat, strawberries, scarecrow festivals, walks in the countryside with pub lunches, the sound of mowers...and for my other half, that perfect green striped lawn! Our lawn has never really been up to standard as it seems to be a bog most of the year round, but I’m reliably informed that all the scarifying, reseeding, fertilising, nurturing and, let’s face it, fussing, in the spring will make all the difference. If you are so disposed, our fantastic local garden centres are great places for advice and ideas! Our local events pages are groaning under the weight of so many local activities this month. Yet there’s always room for more! Please keep the local events coming in. Listings are completely

free for small local groups and charities. We also list all events, along with some extras, on our website. The school holidays this year in our house will bring revision and more revision. I’d forgotten what doing summer exams is like. Oh the joys of waking up on the morning of the exam and just not knowing what you will be asked and thinking that you don’t know any of it! I think I’m feeling more nervous than my children - but this probably isn’t true! Good luck to anyone doing exams next term. As my parents always said to us (whether we believed them or not!) you can only do your best and no more. Well done to Mr and Mrs Ellis of Norton for winning the February competition. Style time

for all ages N OW UPST OPEN FOR T AIRS EENS

It’s been a busy six months for Malton’s new children’s clothes shop, and just like its customers – it is growing fast. Tots2Teens’ new teenagers’ clothing department is now open on the first floor, with a look, a range and an atmosphere that will give anyone over the age of eight a perfect place to put an outfit together.

The range includes the latest crazes, such as Gangnam style, ‘Geek’ and ‘Nerd’ T-shirts and onesies, plus a great range of accessories including handbags, purses, scarves, and jewellery, all at affordable ‘pocket money’ prices. The new “Teens” department is separated into two zones, one for girls and one for boys, with wall art that makes it truly their space. The girls’ side features glamorous dressing room-style décor, and the boys’ side has a mural featuring BMXs and graffiti. The “Tots” department on the ground floor has a popular and wide range of stock from everyday basics, on trend fashions and footwear, covering every age from Premature to eight years. Tots2teens and The Topiary Tree have also joined forces to create “Flower Tots” making Baby clothing bouquets which look just like arrangements of fresh baby flowers, however the flower buds are actually hand-rolled items of baby clothing such as bodysuits, socks, bibs and hats. Combine that with delicate silk flowers and foliage hand-tied into a colourful arrangement, and you’ve got a truly unique and unusual baby gift! Ideal for maternity leaving presents, Baby shower, New baby or Christening gifts. Tots2Teens was opened on October 1 by Rachel Sawyer, an estate agent manager by background, who became frustrated with having to trek to York to find decent clothes for her own three sons and having to take them back if they did not fit. She initially opened the store on a trial basis for twelve weeks, and it was so well received that Rachel decided to take the plunge and sign a long term lease. Rachel puts the shop’s popularity down to a range of factors. First of all, everything is very reasonably

priced. Secondly, Rachel takes a lot of care when buying stock. As a mother herself, she knows how quickly children’s clothes move on, so she makes sure she buys as wide a range of styles as possible and not too many of each design. There are new deliveries every week, which means there is always plenty of choice for the regular customer. Rachel mans the shopfloor herself, with help from her hardworking mother, which means customers receive a consistent, friendly and personal service.

The store’s Facebook page has 900 followers who take part in regular offers and competitions, and customers can also use the page to request items to be put aside for when they can get into town. If there’s something you’d like which isn’t in stock, just let Rachel know and she’ll do everything she can to source it for you. Tots2teens is a family friendly space, with a toybox downstairs to entertain younger customers, and in the future Rachel is planning to create a play area outside, to make clothes shopping a pain-free experience for parents and youngsters alike.

Spiced Rack of Lamb with Fragrant Rice

Serves 4

Ready in 1 hour

Perfect for a spring Sunday lunch or stylish supper this quick and easy lamb dish is full of flavour. Choose a couple of meaty racks of lamb from a good butcher and score the layers of fat before spreading with the harissa paste. Serve with a cooling garlic and mint yoghurt sauce. Ingredients: • 1 tbsp harissa paste (see Tip) • 2 trimmed racks of lamb, each with 6 bones • 2 red onions, peeled and cut into slim wedges • 50g butter • 225g basmati rice, rinsed and drained • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 750ml vegetable stock • Generous pinch saffron strands • 50g sultanas • 40g flaked almonds, lightly toasted • 2 tbsp pomegranate seeds

Tip:

Harissa paste is a fiery hot North African blend of red chilli peppers and spices – just a little goes a long way so use sparingly. You’ll find it in small jars near the dried herb and spice sections in most large supermarkets. 16 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Preheat the oven to 200C, 400F, Gas 6. Spread the harissa paste over the lamb racks. Place the racks in an oiled roasting tin and add the onion wedges. Roast in the preheated oven for 25-35 minutes depending on how pink you like your lamb. Remove from the oven. Cover with foil and leave to rest for 10 minutes – the lamb will be juicier and easier to carve. Meanwhile, heat the butter in a heavy-based pan until melted and foaming. Add the rice and garlic. Fry gently for 1-2 minutes, stirring until the rice is translucent. Pour in the stock. Add the saffron and bring to the boil, stirring. Cover the pan with a tight fitting lid. Reduce the heat to the lowest setting and cook for 15-20 minutes without removing the lid until the rice is tender and all the liquid is absorbed. Remove from the heat. Fork through to separate the grains. Add the sultanas, flaked almonds and pomegranate seeds. Carve the lamb racks into individual cutlets and serve immediately with the fragrant rice and roast onion wedges. Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 2nd April

First-rate Fencing An investment in a new fence should repay you for many years in durability, quality and strength. That’s why the quality of the materials used, and the experience of the fence’s installer should be considered as carefully as the cost. So when you’re considering a new fence, why not talk to a man who spent 35 years farming and fencing more than 120 acres of grass dale? Philip Mason, a fencing contractor based in Settrington, knows

the importance of a sturdy, long-lasting fence. The fences he built – some by hand on land too steep to use machinery – had to enclose his single suckler cow herd, and the breeding bulls – in short, his livelihood. He left the farm in 2008 and moved to Settrington, where his love of work outdoors led him to put his farming skill and experience to good use by offering his services as a fencing contractor. He said: “I have certainly met a lot of people who have been pleasant and interesting and I have always provided a good reliable service for all my customers. I try to use local suppliers to price up my materials and give my customers the best possible value for money. “I feel proud that my customers return to me for further work knowing that they are assured of a job well done.” In addition to fencing, Philip can also help customers with

Ladybirds The larvae and the adults both consume huge numbers of aphids.

Lacewings The young or larvae are brilliant predators, eating mainly aphids, but also eating other pests such as thrips and eggs of moths.

Hoverflies The soft-bodied yellowy grey larvae are great aphid eaters, a single one eating up to fifty in a day, nearing 1,000 in its lifetime.

Some feed their larvae on aphids, weevils and other insects. Some of these may already be in your garden, but by growing some suitable plants you can really build up their numbers. On the whole the simple, non-double varieties are the most insect friendly, so try some of these:

Phacelia A hardy annual with bluish perfumed flowers, perfect for direct sowing.

Ground beetles Often seen scuttling off at speed when you move pots, low-growing plants or loose slabs, they are mostly black and often shiny and are brilliant predators of many pests including slugs, vineweevils and some insect eggs.

Eschscholzia (the Californian poppy) This pretty yellow, orange and cream flowered plant can be direct sown and thrives in sunny well-drained sites.

Energy-saving glazing

G

ood quality windows, doors and conservatories offer so much to your home – comfort, space, energy efficiency, security and style.

Proline has an 17-year track record of supplying a huge range of uPVC doors and windows, plus soffits and fascias, conservatories, and flat roofs to homes in the Pickering area. Company founder Dave Morrison and his team have decades of experience in windows between them, and they’re only too happy to share their knowledge to help you find the right finish for your home. They offer an all round service, with design, planning and technical support. Dave said: “Our tradesmen are highly skilled and have huge experience in this industry and this is paramount to ensuring the perfect finish to any job.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Everything Proline installs comes with full quality assurance – for example window installations are covered with a 10 year warranty and a 25 year product guarantee. Proline has developed a strong local reputation for quality and good value. “The amount of work we do for neighbours and friends

from a local family firm

of existing customers demonstrates that we are a company you can trust completely,” says Dave. The whole team ensure they treat customers’ homes as well as they would treat their own, giving a respectful service when working on site and leaving the place spotlessly clean. If you give Proline a call now, you could be sitting in your dream conservatory before midsummer and relaxing in a warm and cosy home next winter!

TRIPLE GLAZING

Those cold spots around your windows at nighttime, resulting in draughts and condensation, can be eliminated by using triple glazed windows. Triple glazing not only makes your home much more comfortable but provides an energy-efficiency not matched by double glazing alone. It has been estimated that triple glazing reduces heat loss through windows by over a third more than double glazing. It also gives better sound insulation for those of us next to busy roads or noisy neighbours. To make sure you can benefit from this new technology, Proline have some amazing spring offers on supply and installation of triple glazing. Give Dave, Mark or Anna a call in the showroom to find out more.

VISIT THE SHOWROOM

Proline’s showroom at Thornton Road Industrial Estate in Pickering has a fantastic conservatory which demonstrates exactly what could be achieved in your home in terms of comfort, style and extra space. The range of conserva32 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

tory styles now available is huge. Comfortable sun rooms can be designed into the most challenging of spaces, or if you have room to play with, consider a lantern top for an extra-airy feel inside. Modern solar celsius glass offers incredible levels of insulation and strength, helping to keep your conservatory comfortably cool in summer and cosy and warm in the winter - perfect for all-round enjoyment.

FLAT ROOFS

Proline supplies GRP or Sarnafil assured flat roof systems for flat-roof conservatories, porches, garages, dormer-roofs and orangeries. Sarnafil membrane’s and interwoven fibre glass give complete durability and flexibility, making them resistant to UV and extremes of heat and cold, which means it will continue doing its job in every weather. Installation uses no hot bitumen or resins, which means it’s attractive, watertight and pretty much maintenance-free.

EXTRA SECURITY

Every door supplied by Proline has an up to date anti-snap locking system. Older locks were vulnerable to ‘bumping’ by thieves, who used a skeleton key to snap the lock from outside. If your doors are in good working order but your locks are not up to date, the team at Proline is happy to upgrade them to the modern secure models.

Talk with the Proline team about your home by visiting the showroom or giving them a call today.

Do we value patience? Is patience something we encourage and nurture in ourselves or others? It seems today we value speed. Anything that promises to ‘save time’ catches our attention because time is precious and therefore to wait, is viewed as a waste of time. We look for the shortest queue at the petrol station; hate queuing on the phone to speak with a customer representative or waiting to be served in a restaurant. We live in a world where we have come to expect immediate information. When we call friends on the phone instead of leaving a message we would rather try again five minutes later or call their mobile. We just don’t like waiting, but without the opportunity to wait, how do we develop patience? We don’t like waiting because we believe it demonstrates how much we are valued. In a shop, if we have to wait to be served we believe our custom is not valued. We have come to believe that the time it takes to get a response to our text, email or phone message shows how much the person on the other end cares. When we don’t have to wait, do we believe we are loved more? Veronica Salt was one of the children who gained a ticket to Mr Wonka’s Chocolate Factory in Roald Dahl’s book, ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. In the film, Veronica sees the squirrels that sort the good from the bad nuts and decides she wants one. ‘Daddy, I want a squirrel and I want it now!’ she demands, but when Mr Wonka refuses to sell her Dad a squirrel, her face is a picture! Was Veronica’s Dad showing more love by offering to buy the squirrel or should he have said ‘no’? Is instant really best? Not everything can be rushed, freshly brewed coffee takes time. Creation is full of examples of things that cannot be rushed. A farmer must wait patiently for the crops to grow, it takes a bee’s whole life cycle to makes less than a teaspoon of honey and we still can’t hurry a baby! It still takes nine months from conception to delivery. These times of ‘waiting’ are not ‘wasted’, they are opportunities. They are a time to prepare and grow in anticipation and excitement, a time to be faithful and consistent and a time to develop perseverance and character. I believe that patience is a virtue and as the poem goes on, we should ‘possess it if we can’. Perhaps the best things do come to those who wait? Are you prepared?

H

SBC have released a rather worrying report on by Julie Wilson retirement. It shows that, on average, people will have 19 years in retirement. But the average person’s retirement savings will last for just 7 years. It seems that people are putting their heads in the sand. Although we are all living longer, through tougher economic times, our expectations about the standard of living in retirement remain unchanged. Worldwide, the study found that people will on average run out of retirement savings just over half way into their retirement. According to the study, more than half of the UK working population is not preparing adequately for retirement, with one in five saving nothing at all. Figures last month from Nest, the stateprovided default pension scheme, showed that seven in 10 private sector workers don’t currently pay into a retirement scheme. Joanne Segars, the chief executive of the National Association of Pension Funds, has this to say: “The UK needs to do more to face up to saving for its old age. For millions of people, that will mean working longer or saving more, or both. Why do I need a Structural Engineer?

A

ny building project requires a vast amount of knowledge to complete but ensuring that the building will be safe and stable is a job for a structural engineer. Maltech, owned by Alan Mitchell, has been in business for 12 years providing essential support on projects big and small in the North Yorkshire area and further afield. Whether the project is a domestic or large industrial or commercial scheme, the role of a structural engineer is critical not only in the building design but also in construction and repairs, extensions, conversions, ground investigations, surveys and inspections. Having a structural engineer’s report on your building project will give you peace of mind, but

should also help when you come to sell your property. The team at Maltech can help with any project involving civil and structural engineering. “We provide the same level of care and attention to all of our customers no matter how large or small the scheme,” Alan explains. The other benefit of choosing Maltech is that they are local with good knowledge of the surrounding area, which means that they can offer much more authoritative advice on your particular project. The Maltech team like to ensure that they keep up to date with new techniques and developments and are members of the Institute of Structural Engineers, the Association of Consulting Engineers and the Steel Construction Institute which all help to give you complete peace of mind when you

Porsche Cayenne GTS You want a 911, but need more space and would rather have the commanding view of the road a 4x4 offers. Is the Porsche Cayenne the answer? We find out…

by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

What is it? It’s a Cayenne – Porsche’s roughty toughty offroader – but one that’s had a dose of steroids and some glitter liberally applied to its bodywork. Slotting into the range between the V8 S and the Turbo, the GTS comes with more focus and power and some distinctive styling options.

What’s under the bonnet? A rather raucous 4.8-litre V8 that’s been uprated from 394bhp to 414bhp and boasts 515Nm of torque. Performance is far from the Turbo’s though; the GTS will hit 60mph in 5.7s and go

Make sure your 4x4 is in peak condition • Full underbody steam cleaning service • Waxoyl treatment for rust and corrosion prevention • Chassis treatment and repair • Accident damage repair

on to 162mph. It sounds pretty special getting there though! Everything else has been on the sharpening block – the steering is crisper, the eight-speed gearbox shifts quicker, and the lowered ride height gives it an added edge on the road.

What’s the kit like? Pretty impressive, but like all Porsches you’ll soon rack up Ford Fiesta-sized bills on the options. A

RYEDALE • APRIL 2013 • ISSUE 87 communications pack costs £2,157, 21-inch black alloys are £1,513 and even the red paint will set you back £1,619. Our test car had a total of £13,760 worth of goodies…ouch.

Any rivals? The ageing Range Rover Sport puts up a pretty good fight, but we’ve never tried a Rangie that sounds as good as this GTS. Audi will soon be at the party with its SQ models, but that’s yet to be applied to its Q7. For a left field there’s always the Infiniti Vettel Edition, but that’s very expensive in comparison. So, not much choice out there at the moment.

Is it any good? Although it’s incredibly quick and sounds tremendous, it can feel a little bit stressed out at times. By that we mean it feels on edge, twitchy even – perhaps the added sharpness has given it a little too much bite. However, there’s no doubting it has real presence on the road – it’s just the styling might not suit all tastes.

The verdict We like the GTS treatment given to most Porsches. The 997 911 really benefitted from the work over, and the Panamera GTS we tried after this Cayenne worked fantastically well too. However, the off-roader doesn’t feel quite right

in this guise. It’s quick and sounds incredible, but feels like it’s pretending to be something that it’s not.

We are family For children, April means the Easter holidays. Time for enforced fun, illfated camping trips and long drives squished in the back of the car, with your siblings breathing in your face. We’ve picked some of the best books about family life and how to survive. Two weeks off…are we there yet? My Family and Other Animals: Gerald Durrell Eccentric but enchanting, Durrell recalls his blissful childhood growing up on a Greek Island. Scorpions and snakes abound, as well as colourful characters and the all-round air of plain bonkers-madness that we associate with family life. Chaotic and hypnotic, this book is hugely funny and hasn’t lost any of its appeal over the years.

through phone calls for the last decade or so. Now Richard has invited Angela and her growing brood to spend a week with them in deepest darkest Wales. The book flits between characters but once you’re into the rhythm of how these two families tick, it’s a great read that’s full of sibling-rivalry, trips and falls down memory lane and getting to know each other all over again. We Need to Talk About Kevin: Lionel Shriver This is the shocking and disturbing story of a family torn apart when the eldest son carries out a massacre at his school. It’s powerfully told through a series of letters written by his mother, Eva to her husband Franklin as she tries to come to terms with the atrocities carried out by Kevin. It brings up all kinds of questions about nature versus nurture and how siblings and parents impact on each other’s lives. Throughout the book we can begin to piece together exactly what took place in the high school gym, but it still won’t prepare you for the startling conclusion. Quite simply, a brilliant thriller. The Red House by Mark Haddon, published by Jonathan Cape. Used by permission of The Random House Group Limited

Little Women: Louisa May Alcott Never were there such devoted sisters…until you add domestic turmoil, death and boys into the mix. Amy, Beth, Jo and Meg are the March sisters growing up during the Civil War era. Jo doesn’t want to cut her hair off and Meg doesn’t want to be a governess, but you have to admit that Beth comes off worst! It’s an all-American classic and is a definite must-read for any teenage girl, whether you have sisters or not. Everybody Jam: Ali Lewis The Dawson family is used to harsh climates and tough situations: they run a cattle station in Australia’s Northern Territory. Plagued by drought, this year’s ‘muster’ will be another battle with the elements. But there’s more to contend with than the outdoors this year. Eldest son Jonny has been killed but no one talks about it, 14 year old Sissy is pregnant after ‘rooting’ with an Aboriginal lad and there’s a new Pommie house girl who can’t even make toast. Told through the eyes of 13 year old Danny, it’s a story of a strong clan who overcome adversity and survive, way out in the outback. The Red House: Mark Haddon How do siblings become total strangers? Brought together by the death of their mother, Angela and her brother Richard have only really communicated 42 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Exciting new venture for local choirs

T

he Chanticleer Singers and the Stamford Bridge Singers are well-known to audiences in Ryedale and beyond, and the two choirs are planning to combine for a very special concert in St. Peter’s Church, Norton, in July this year. On the programme will be two well-loved works: Mozart’s ‘Spatzenmesse’ (Sparrow Mass), and John Rutter’s ‘Requiem’. The choirs – which together will number around seventy voices – will be accompanied by Geoffrey Coffin on the organ, and a small orchestra. The Mozart Mass will be directed by SBS Musical Director Michael Wiles, and the Rutter Requiem by Chanticleer Musical Director Jane Sturmheit. The lovely setting and acoustic of St. Peter’s Church should prove the ideal venue for this

44 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

exciting concert. It won’t be the first time the choirs have worked together: they combined to sing a farewell concert for Canon John Manchester when he retired from St. Mary’s Priory Church, Old Malton, and more recently sang at a special service (again in St. Mary’s) for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. It was because both choirs and their respective Musical Directors enjoyed working together on these occasions that the idea of the forthcoming joint concert was born. The concert will take place on Saturday, July 6th., at 7.30 p.m., in St. Peter’s Church, Norton-on-Derwent, and tickets will be available shortly from Chanticleer Ticket Secretary Sally Craggs (01653 691804) and

Stamford Bridge Singers Ticket Secretary Rosemary Downey (01904 787181).

Put the date in your diary, and look forward to a special evening!

Is Your Head Banging? More than 10 million people in the UK suffer from regular headaches. But how do you know what type of headache you have and what the best treatment is?

By Julia Faulks

Whether you wake up with a banging headache or it develops as a dull ache throughout the day, a headache can be more than just a pain in the head – inconvenient, and at times debilitating. Thankfully most headaches aren’t dangerous, but understanding what type of headache you have and what’s causing it will help you when it comes to choosing treatment.

Why does my head hurt?

A headache is caused when the blood vessels around the brain swell, along with tension in the muscles and nerves in surrounding muscles. If you’re stressed, not having enough sleep, drinking too much, dehydrated or eating lots of junk food, there’s more chance you’ll end up with a blinder. Eye strain, blocked sinuses, a change in body temperature or blood pressure and hormonal changes are other known triggers. Headaches can also be as a result of a cold virus or other health condition. If you’ve suffered a blow to the head or have a rash accompanied with a headache, always seek medical advice. Tension headaches are the most common type of headache and feel as if someone has stretched a rubber band around the top and side of your head. The pain is normally more constant compared to the throbbing ache you may experience with a migraine, which can cause vomiting and sensitivity to light. Cluster headaches tend to cause an intense pain around one or both eyes and can come on very suddenly. Sufferers may have one to three of these attacks every day for weeks or months and they are often more painful than a migraine. Brewing up a headache Found naturally in tea, coffee and chocolate and added to many energy drinks, it’s more the withdrawal of caffeine than the stimulant itself 48 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

that can lead to headaches. On the flip side, nonprescription painkillers with added caffeine can actually speed up their effectiveness.

Treating your headache

You can buy a range of different painkillers over the counter or obtain stronger alternatives on prescription. Some may suit you better than others – they include paracetamol, codeine, anti-inflammatory painkillers (such as aspirin and ibuprofen) or a group of anti-migraine medicines known as triptans (for example, sumatriptan). It’s recommended that you don’t take painkillers for more than two days at a time – if you do, you may be at risk of developing ‘medication-overuse’ headaches.

Clearing your head the natural way As well as improving your general lifestyle (more sleep and exercise, less booze and stress) try the following: 1. Essential oils: either use them for massage or add them to your bath. Recommended oils include Lavender, Clary Sage and Roman Chamomile. (Not suitable for pregnant women). 2. Cooling headache pads: For some instant soothing relief, use these alongside any other medication or on their own. 3. Tiger Balm: this is a natural remedy that is often used to help relieve headaches. (Not suitable for pregnant women or children under 2.) 4. Headache pillows: these may help prevent or relieve headaches by providing support to your neck, improving your posture and reducing inflammation. 5. Acupuncture/massage/reflexology: all of these alternative therapies can be extremely effective at relieving a nagging headache. Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 2nd April

How to give your mouth an MOT...

by Christine Parker BDS (GDC 72136) Whilst these tips are no substitute for seeing a dental professional they may prompt you to get to know your mouth better and see what is normal for you. • Look at your lips and check for scabs, lumps and bumps that have not healed, people working outdoors should be particularly aware of the risks of skin cancer. • Feel under your jaw line for any lumps and bumps that fail to resolve, if your ‘glands’ are regularly enlarged and tender you may have a dental problem. • Using a small hand held torch look in a mirror and lift your tongue to see under it, you should be able to see some blood vessels, it should not look angry or have any white patches. If you do see these you must seek professional assessment soon. • Now poke your tongue out and look at the sides and top, are there any lumps , bumps, ulcers, dents or white patches. If there are you should seek a professional opinion quickly. • Do the same with the inside of your cheeks and as far as possible with the roof of your mouth. • Now have a look at your gums, they should have a pale pink appearance, they should not bleed when you brush or floss. If they do you need an assessment of your gum health, poor gum health has been linked to health problems elsewhere in the body. Finally have a look at your teeth are there any white, yellow, brown or black marks on them? Are there any that are chipped, again these should be checked professionally before they become a problem. Those of you who regularly attend a dentist will recognise these as part of the examination all dentists must do to fully assess your oral condition, many people seek help only when their teeth hurt and sadly this may be too late to save the tooth or make treatment much more complicated and expensive For a comprehensive mouth MOT contact Georgina at Howardian Dental Practice and book an appointment.

Competition

...on Vegetarianism

Find Daisy the Cow

and WIN £20!

Going to a catholic school, Lent can be a pretty big deal with the people around me. Now I haven’t taken part properly since my mum once persuaded me to give up fizzy drinks, it didn’t last very long. However a friend of mine had a different idea this year, she’s given up eating meat for lent. The majority of vegetarians I know have chosen to do so because of emotional reasons, they don’t like the idea of killing innocent animals, which is most would agree is fair enough although inconvenient at dinner parties. For me, growing up very close to the reality of the meat industry, from bottle feeding lambs that have later fed me, means I’m slightly more desensitised to the emotive aspect of eating animals. There are of course some who simply don’t like the taste of meat, which is not hard to believe if they’ve never tried a bacon sarnie, and those who think it’s truly much healthier to be veggie than carnivorous, a controversial view, but not without its evidence. But upon closer inspection, there might be a different, very valid reason for giving up meat. The environmental impact. According to the UN in 2006, the meat production industry produces more CO2 per year than the entirety of the transport sector. That includes cars, trains, planes, ferries, the whole works. This figure takes into account the energy used when raising animals, feeding animals and growing their food, butchering them, transporting meat, keeping it cool, cooking them, thinking about it you could add even more, the knock-on effect of clearing forests for grazing, packaging meat, the energy that goes into making the steel for a cow shelter… but that would be maybe taking it too far. The point is, due to the insane rise in the consumption of meat over the last few centuries, and the response in the form of unsustainable intensive agriculture which causes a serious drain on resources like fossil fuels, water and land, it is now a serious player in the global warming game, one which doesn’t seem to get mentioned much at all. The possibility of stopping everyone eating meat forever is ludicrous, but perhaps persuading people to eat less meat on a weekly basis could be slightly more achievable, and make a little bit of difference to the world. My friend might have the right idea, in giving it up for a short while, even if just for the challenge. So I’m giving it a go, just for one week, to see if I can. I’ll have an update next month!

“Common things are common”

There must be more than a hundred weird and wonderful skin problems that we see but as we were taught as vet students “common things are common”, so don’t leap to the internet and terrify yourself with gruesome possibilities! There are few conditions more likely to lead a horse owner to be ostracized and shunned by others than a skin condition in their beloved companion, (excepting, perhaps, a hacking cough or “strangles” lumps under the jaw).

RINGWORM

A double misnomer, is one such condition. It's surprisingly caused by a fungus not a worm and produces lesions that are rarely the classic “ring” shape.

Young horses are commonly affected as they normally then get immune to the condition having recovered from it once. It is simple to treat and early recognition and treatment is helpful as it stops the spores from contaminating the environment where they can lie dormant for a long time, particularly in wood, causing problems in other animals years later. Its very infectious hence the “evil” looks from other horse owners if theirs are in contact with yours and would lead to you being refused entry to horsey events. It can also spread to humans and can cause a really horrific itchy mess of your skin as any young vet/ farmer will tell you!

LICE

Causing another really itchy scurfy problem in many horses. One never really knows where they originally come from, but the horses go nuts, chewing or stamping at their coats causing cuts and grazes, in their attempts to alleviate the itch. Luckily these only stay on humans for a couple of hours but, believe me, long enough to feel intense pity for the poor sufferers, its making me itch while I write!!

MUD FEVER

This year we've had more horses than usual affected by “mud fever”, this is a scabby leg or body “rain scald” condition caused when several types of bacteria flourish in the air-

RDR out and about in the community Ryedale Dog Rescue are always keen to talk about our charity and our dogs and recently we went along to a local scout group with one of our recently re-homed dogs, Charlie to talk to the children about what happens at a rescue charity, run a fun quiz and answer questions about rescuing dogs. If you would like us to come and talk to your group about what we do please give us a call on 07581324153.

Dog of the month: Lady Lady is a very pretty red staffie bitch. Lady would like a home where she is the only dog as she likes all the cuddles and love to herself but may share if the right special friend came along. Despite her looks Lady is an athletic dog so agility may even be her calling. Please call Rosie on 07581324153 if you would like to give Lady a loving forever home. RYEDALE • APRIL 2013 • ISSUE 87 less warm damp conditions under muddy legs. Normally routine antiseptics and clipping off excess hair can settle this down but sometimes the infection really takes hold, typically in white haired legs of chestnut horses or heavy feathered types. I have here some before and after shots of one such case which only improved after several courses of antibiotics and salt water spa treatment. Luckily his skin is now all perfect and he is back in ridden work. These are but three of our “common things” but the take home message is to spot problems early and call your vet in if you are at all worried so that we can get you up and running quickly and with your horsey friends still speaking to you!!
