elcome to a (very busy) November. I wouldn’t describe it as a feng shui or anything ‘deep’, but we’ve been rearranging the furniture in our offices. For the past years we’ve been working in two offices and, with much running across the landing in between, some days have seemed long. And idle office chat isn’t the same when needing a megaphone! Work shouldn’t just be about getting stuff done before going home. It’s such a huge part of our lives and the social aspect is as important. So we’ve all moved back into one office, making the other for a meetings and quiet room. Busy, bustling, open offices are a bit like marmite. Some people like the hubbub, others prefer near-silence for to getting things done. Whereas the ‘experts’ suggest it fosters creativity, brainstorming and team-work – the essence of the Handy Mags! All that aside, a fresh looks seem to have made us all more energetic and working together has resulted in this month’s magazine being even fuller with local information, businesses, events and articles for you to enjoy! With the darker evenings closing in, how about an evening at a local theatre or cinema? We have lots to choose from this month from York Theatre Royal to the Palace Cinema, The Milton Rooms and Helmsley Arts Centre with everything from the very scary Woman in Black to an evening with The Yorkshire Shepherdess in Malton. There is nothing like seeing something live and our local venues have a fantastic range of high quality shows right on our doorstep. When this edition hits your doorstep we will have been busy getting our December editions

The Tidy Group meets monthly (Malton one month, Norton the next) and tends to tackle the roadside verges and areas away from the town centre (where much of the litter comes from passing traffic) but there is hardly an area that has not been tackled over the years. These events are regularly attended by around 20 people, and individuals carry out additional litter picks across the community. In 2018 over 500 bags of litter, plus debris, was collected. Members of the Group also look after the public noticeboards, carry out sweeping and weeding, and help with community gardening. All this work compliments the work of Malton in Bloom and a good number of volunteers get involved directly with both groups. Work is carried out with the support of Streetscene of Ryedale District Council who provide litter pickers, bags and hi-vis vests, and take away the litter that has been collected. Malton and Norton Tidy Group can always do with help – if you would like to get involved the monthly meet up is the first Sunday of the month look up the details in the What’s On section of this Handy Mag or Facebook ‘Malton and Norton Tidy Up Group’. Volunteering, in its many forms, is incredibly rewarding. Volunteers are often the glue that holds a community together. Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place whilst it can also help you gain confidence, meet people, gain new skills and experiences, and improve your general health and wellbeing.

F

LIGHT YOUR FIRE…

ocus Fireplaces know that gathering around a hearth for warmth and a sense of belonging is perhaps hard wired into our genes, a feeling inherited from our days as cave-people. We may not need to ward off sabre-toothed tigers any more, but we all still feel safe and cosy around a fireplace. Little wonder that more often than not, even in the modern world, the focal point of any living room is a fireplace of some kind. For the residents of York and surrounding areas these essential focal points are provided by the aptly named Focus Fireplaces. A family owned business, Focus has been warming us up since 1985. It began life as a maker of surrounds with its first showroom opening as a factory outlet. The surrounds on offer quickly expanded to include other materials than wood, and the company then took the logical step of supplying both gas and electric fires, all from top quality British manufacturers. Focus now sells a huge range of fireplaces for all fuel types. In recent years, stoves have become an increasingly popular product. Rivals have come and gone in the company’s 30plus years, but Focus remains a beacon of success. Managing director Julian Somers is not revealing all the secrets, but says: “Our showroom displays fireplaces and stoves to suit all requirements, but whether it’s the ultimate model or something to suit a more modest budget, we never compromise on quality. Our products are meant to last, and be at the centre of people’s lives, and we never forget that.”

26 | Handy Mag | November 2019

Julian says that the amount of repeat business and customer recommendation not only proves his point, it is crucial. “Our reputation is paramount, and a happy customer is the best advertisement we can have.” The word ‘professional’ is dear to Julian’s heart. “We can have great products and a huge choice, but our professionalism makes us stand out. This means listening carefully to our customer’s requirements and offering first class service both before and after installation. For instance we think it’s very important to survey a property prior to any installation, which helps us offer the best possible advice. There is also a willingness to look after our customers in the long term by servicing the gas fire or stove for its working life.” Customers can expect a lead time of 3-4 weeks from order to fitting in quieter times and 5-6 weeks in busier times – and no prizes for guessing that demand is higher during the winter months! Current trends in the industry include gas stoves – good for those keeping a keen eye on fuel bills – and both gas and electric fires with larger flame displays. Whatever the fireplace fashion, Focus Fireplaces have proven that choice, service and professionalism never go out of style!

CHARLIE’S COLUMN Autism

Autism is a part of my life. My family had to grow up with a very fussy child (bath temperatures and sensitive ears alongside big meltdowns) and there are still things I have carried over with me to adulthood. The main one for me is quite simple but a change to it could ruin my day: Routine. And don’t my parents know it’s crucial for them as well. I remember when I first got my own routine going on starting secondary school and I got it spot on- Arrive at 8:30am, spend at least 15 minutes in Learning Support before going to my first class. At lunch I’d always sit at the same table, hang out with the same mates at break time. A couple of years into my education, the timetable was changed from 5 lessons a day to 3 ,being two hours compared to one. It threw and unsettled me just because my routine was out of sync. One of the only things I had control over had been taken away. I couldn’t control missing almost a full summer to epileptic seizures, I couldn’t guess how many days I’d miss each year. And I had a long adjustment period to get my control back.

700,000 is the estimated figure of people on the autistic spectrum in the UK. It increases further to 2.8 million if you include their families. Now that’s a LOT of people living with Autism on a daily basis. I’ve always embraced my Autism diagnosis rather than let it impact my life as a young adult. I’ve gotten better in some ways: my hatred of loud noises as a toddler disappeared, as has having to have a certain temperature for a bath. I still obsess over video games, films (BLADE RUNNER 2049 and DUNKIRK are noticeable examples of me talking about them constantly) and music. (sorry, not really sorry dad ;) I’ve grown up and accepted my diagnosis and all the caveats involved. My final message is to embrace your Autism, not to deny it. Because it’s there to stay.

RYEDALE FOODBANK

A

CHRISTMAS APPEAL 2019

lthough as Foodbanks go, Ryedale Foodbank is quite small (our client numbers are in the tens not the hundreds), we are experiencing increasing numbers of requests for help – at least doubling over the last year.

Summer packups ready for distribution

Many of our clients do have jobs but these are lowly paid and they rely on Universal Credit, as do those who do not work for whatever reason. Most of our clients manage their money well, until an unexpected bill turns up…..and then the choice between paying the bill, the rent or buying food is a hard one to make. Christmas is a particularly difficult time for many. When you are just about making ends meet it is hard to see all the treats and gifts in the stores knowing you can’t afford the latest toys and games for your children….or it can make you feel particularly lonely if you live on your own. Here at Foodbank we like to make a little extra contribution to our clients’ Christmases and hopefully will add Christmas treats to our clients packs during December. Following a very successful project over the summer holidays delivering lunches to children missing out on their free school meals there will also be a scaled down Christmas holiday lunch delivery. Please remember though…..our clients still need basic food, so when you make your donation please include items from our shortages list as well as our treats list. Ryedale Foodbank is currently short of UHT Fruit Juice, UHT Milk, tins of meat in sauce and cold meats, tinned vegetables, tinned and packet potatoes, tinned tomatoes, breakfast cereals, rice pudding, rice, tea-bags (80/100) hot chocolate and packet soups. Ryedale Foodbank would like as extras Christmas biscuits and sweets, small Christmas puddings and cakes, mince-pies, Christmas Carrier Bags and Crackers. It would be really helpful for extras to be donated well before Christmas to ensure clients get them in time. 32 | Handy Mag | November 2019

When you are just about making ends meet it is hard to see all the treats and gifts in the stores knowing you can’t afford the latest toys and games for your children…. Ryedale Foodbank collection boxes can be found in a variety of shops, churches, schools and businesses around Malton, Norton and Pickering. Or drop your donation off at our warehouse at 7a Howe Road Norton on Monday and Thursday mornings between 10 and 12, Tuesday afternoons between 1:30 and 3:30 or Friday afternoons between 1 and 3.

On behalf of all the volunteers and clients of Ryedale Foodbank; Thank You

Short Story A Busy Year for Best in Show “Have you displayed it in pride of place all year?” Roy Cheddar, local councillor responsible for overseeing the Village in Bloom award ceremony, optimistically surveyed Doreen’s chaotic living room. “I can’t see it anywhere.” “It was on the sideboard to start with,” Doreen dithered, looking under the settee cushions, “but the cat took umbrage so I moved it out of harm’s way.” “So where is it now?” Roy asked impatiently. Doreen had won the coveted ‘Best in Show’ trophy for her winter-flowering baskets last year. His task was to retrieve that trophy, in order for it to be presented to this year’s winner. He had hoped to be in and out in five minutes. “I remember!” Doreen straightened up. “I took it down the Feathers to celebrate.” “You took it to the pub?” Roy raised his eyebrows. “That wasn’t very wise.” “Then I won the meat raffle.” Doreen pushed past him into the kitchen. “I carried my chops home in it.” “And then what happened to it?” Roy hurried after her as she opened the freezer door. “I put it in here.” Doreen rummaged through the freezer, while a bag of peas cascaded onto the lino. “But it’s a huge silver-plated cup,” Roy said crossly. “You can’t put it in a freezer.” “Well it’s not in there now anyway.” Doreen closed the door with an icy blast. “I’m sure I used it for my bread sauce at Christmas.” “That’s not what it’s intended for,” Roy frowned. “You’re supposed to display it.” “I’ve got no time to dust knick-knacks.” Doreen waved her hand. “Everything has to earn its keep in my house.” “After Christmas, what then?” Roy sighed.

“Follow me.” Doreen opened the door of her downstairs toilet. “I had a flood in here.” “You used it for a leaky lavatory?” Roy asked in horror. “Well it was just the right size,” Doreen nodded, “and the cat had already been sick in it by then.” “The cat did what?” Roy wasn’t sure if he wanted to see this cup again. “She’d eaten all the bread sauce,” Doreen shrugged, “and sometimes you’ve just got to grab what’s handy.” “It’s going to need a professional clean.” Roy frowned, wondering whose job that was going to be. “So what happened after that?” “It’s funny you should ask,” Doreen said. “Our Elsie visited with Nanna’s ashes, and there was another cat incident.” “Of course there was.” Roy considered this cat a menace. “It knocked the urn over,” Doreen continued, “so we had to scoop everything up and…” “Put it in the trophy?” Roy asked miserably. “Like I said,” Doreen shrugged, “you’ve got to grab what’s handy.” “Elsie’s got the trophy then?” Roy pulled out his phone. “Shall we give her a ring.” “Good idea,” Doreen nodded emphatically. “What’s the time difference in Tasmania?” That was enough; Roy made an executive decision. “It looks like it’s gone for good,” he sighed, opening the front door. “I’ll have to buy a new one. I’m very disappointed in you Doreen.” Doreen pulled a tissue from her sleeve. “I’m sorry I’ve let you down.” She blew her nose. “I tried to look after it, but a lot can happen in one year.” “There, there, can’t be helped.” Roy softened. “I’ll get straight back to the office and sort this out.” He waved as he walked down the path, deciding this was a lesson learned: not everyone can be trusted with precious things. If he’d been paying more attention he might have noticed the trophy-shaped dust-free patch on Doreen’s sideboard, or that she didn’t even own a cat. Jackie Brewster

Yorkshire in Bloom Success for Ryedale

MALTON

M

alton In Bloom (MIB) has once again been a great success, and has been rewarded with Gold, and Best Small Town from Yorkshire In Bloom 2019 (YIB). YIB judging took place in early July and included a tour of many aspects of MIB across the community, followed by a presentation of the whole project. The judges were full of praise for the hard work put in by the MIB team, in a relatively short time, to make Malton a great place to live and they saw first-hand how much the efforts are appreciated and supported by residents and businesses. The judges were impressed with the number and quality of the formal town displays - the baskets and barrier planting, with their striking colour scheme, giving a “wow” factor. Community input scored highly in the assessment and the judges picked out for praise Chapter 2’s beer garden, the gardens at St Michael’s Church and Malton Flower Club’s display inside, St Leonard’s 40 | Handy Mag | November 2019

Garden (Old Maltongate), and the planting at the doctor’s surgery and bus station. A visit was also made to Malton School to show how they are encouraging the next generation of gardeners. Of note here was the provision for wildlife, the addition of artwork, and the fact that vegetables are grown for use in the kitchen. Whilst the formal displays were regularly watered under a contract and by the groundsmen of

Malton Town Council, volunteers have been hard at work tending the plants in the barrier planters and transforming and maintaining public open spaces, including the area of land at the Church Hill/ Castlegate junction, the seating areas in Newbiggin, the town entrance signs, and at Orchard Fields, near the fire station. Plans are already being made for 2020 and MIB is always interested in hearing from individuals, community groups and clubs that would like to be involved. The Almshouses gardens were entered separately into Yorkshire in Bloom and they achieved an Outstanding award in their category - another well deserved result for village residents. Congratulations to all TLD Hub volunteers, led by Roger Sharples and Denise Rajab, and if you would like to join in or find out about future projects do contact them via email at tldvillagehub@gmail.com, by phone on 07826 595048 or via the contact page on their website www.thorntonledalevillagehub.org Denise Rajab with Thornton le Dale’s Gold Certificate

hornton-le-Dale wins a Gold Award for their very first entry into Village in Bloom One of the first initiatives launched in 2018 by the newly-formed Thornton-le-Dale Village Hub was working towards a 2019 entry into Yorkshire in Bloom. And they scored a resounding success at this, their first attempt, winning the Gold Award in their Large Village category, as well as the Award for the “Best New Entry of 2019”. Not only floral and sensory planters and hanging basket displays, Thornton-le-Dale’s Yorkshire in Bloom entry incorporated many aspects of the Hub volunteers’ work: planting Spring bulbs and tidying up the Village Pond area, which had become neglected, with the addition of a new Nature Trail and a pond dipping area for children; improvements in the whole village environment through regular litter picking and kerb cleaning; painting of all the railings in the village centre and up by All Saints Church; community activities such as establishing a weekly Community Choir, organising group walks and setting up a social luncheon group for the elderly; as well as fundraising activities, raising money for charities. thehandymag.com | 41

LOCAL OPTICIANS LEADS THE WAY WITH REVOLUTIONARY EYE TECHNOLOGY It’s also a groundbreaking tool used to enhance retinal screening for diabetics and macular degeneration as it’s able to catch the earliest signs of change. Louise Knock explains “It gives us so much more information, enabling me to do my job even better and more accurately”.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

With this new technology, Specsavers in Malton offer the whole package when it comes to looking after the health of your eyes.

S eyes.

pecsavers in Malton has recently invested in brand new scanning technology, revolutionising the way they look after your

Josie Matthews, the Dispensing Director at Specsavers in Malton, says, “We use state-of-the-art technology, so customers can rest assured they will be getting the best help possible.”

“SO MUCH BETTER, AND SO MUCH MORE ACCURATE”

A standard retinal photograph provides optometrists with a view of the surface of your retina, but with Specsavers’ new Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) machine, they’re able to scan through all the layers, giving an even clearer, more detailed overall picture. Louise Knock explains “It’s not just a scan, it gives us a completely different view of the retina than ever before. We can see through the layers and through sections, so we can spot any early changes”.

THEY HAVE THE EXPERIENCE, TECHNIQUES AND TECHNOLOGY TO HELP YOU SEE AND HEAR CLEARER FOR LONGER THAN EVER BEFORE.

They’re also able to easily monitor existing conditions using the scans, as they provide a detailed picture of progression that can be kept on file. Josie says “Our business has grown since opening in 2002. It has been a very satisfying process, helping many people gain confidence because they can see or hear more clearly again. And as our customers keep returning to us, we will continue to offer superb service.” What’s more, their comprehensive, quality service is for all budgets. The scan can be easily added to your normal eye test for just £10. And they stock a wide range of frames and lenses – including designer frames – for all budgets. For more information or to book an appointment call 01653 692 784. Open seven days a week.

A FIELD OF VISION

Being able to see through to the lowest levels of the eye means your optometrist is able to spot signs of disease years in advance. A retinal photo only shows cells once they have died (and are at the surface), but now they can see when the cells are sick or thinner, so they can catch the disease process before it happens. For example, the OCT scan could detect glaucoma four to five years before a standard exam would, meaning you are able to start treating it much earlier. ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

NIGEL SLATER’S TOAST

From making the perfect sherry trifle, waging war over cakes through to the playground politics of sweets and the rigid rules of restaurant dining, this is a moving and evocative tale of love, lost and … toast © Simon Annand

Director by Jonnie Riordan Written by Henry Filloux-Bennett York Theatre Royal, 19 – 23 November Press performance Tues 19 Nov, 7.30pm Nigel Slater’s Toast at York Theatre Royal from 19 to 23 November is a new play based on food writer Nigel Slater’s award-winning autobiography. Vividly recreating suburban England in the 1960s, his childhood is told through the tastes and smells he grew up with and the audience is enveloped by the evocative sights and sounds of cookery that defined the definitive moments of his youth. The play is written by Henry Filloux-Bennett, Chief Executive and Artistic Director of the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield, where the UK tour of Toast launched after a season at The Other Palace in London. Nigel said: “I’m thrilled that the play will continue its journey after The Other Palace, visiting venues around the country.”

His writing has won the National Book Awards, the Glenfiddich Trophy, the James Beard Award, the British Biography of the Year and the Andre Simon Memorial Prize. Television awards include a Guild of Food Writers Award for his BBC1 series Simple Suppers and the BBC Food Personality of the Year. Playing Nigel Slater in Toast is Giles Cooper whose theatre credits include This House, People and After the Dance (National Theatre) and Henry V, The Knight of the Burning Pestle and The Duchess of Malfi (Shakespeare’s Globe). Playing Nigel’s father is Blair Plant, who first worked on the stage crew at York Theatre Royal 34 years ago while studying at York St John College. His credits as an actor at the theatre include Blithe Spirit, Wars of the Roses, Madness of King George III, Habeas Corpus and Having a Ball. He also appeared in York Theatre Royal’s Olivier Awardwinning production of The Railway Children at both Kings Cross and Waterloo Theatres in London.

He has been the food columnist for The Observer for 25 years and is the author of a collection of bestselling books and presenter of nine BBC television series. His memoir Toast – The Story of a Boy’s Hunger won six major awards, has been translated into five languages and became a BBC film starring Helena Bonham Carter and Freddie Highmore. His latest book Greenfeast was published by HarperCollins. © Piers Foley 54 | Handy Mag | November 2019

he Christmas festivities are upon us here at St Leonard’s Hospice. If you have some festive attire you are itching to get out, I have the perfect reason to wear it! Join us and other Ryedale businesses by taking part in our ‘Look a Twit in a Festive Knit’ campaign. It’s really easy to get involved - simply choose a day in December to wear a festive outfit and in return donate £1 to the Hospice… it really is that simple. This is a great incentive for any workplace or school, and I would be very happy to visit you on or before your chosen date. Moving seamlessly from one sparkly affair to another; we have recently launched Strictly St Leonard’s 2020 and are currently recruiting couples. If you dream of floating around the dance floor like a strictly couple then this is for you! You will receive six professional dance lessons and be immersed in the full strictly experience… sequins and all! If you would like to know more please get in touch. This year also sees the launch of our Gift of Memories appeal, which helps patients and their loved ones create special memories at this seasonal time. Christmas at St Leonard’s is a special time of year and even more so for our patients. The best gift we can give this Christmas is the gift of memories moments of joy, love, laughter and happiness. You can help Grandad attend his grandchildren’s school nativity, help patients get home for Christmas if they can or, if necessary, help a family celebrate Christmas Day early in our Family Room. A £10 donation, or what you’d normally spend on stocking filler, will help create these memories for patients and their loved ones, enabling them to enjoy the time they have together. Will you do something wonderful this Christmas and give a Gift of Memories to a patient? Maybe you have precious memories of a loved one in the Hospice or simply want to help make a difficult time memorable for the right reasons. Remember the best gifts we can give are not the material ones, but the memories we make with the people we love. Please donate now at www. stleonardshospice.org. uk/giftofmemories Kathryn Craven Tel: 01904 777777 kathryn.craven@stleonardshospice.nhs.uk

TOP TIPS FROM A DENTAL PROFESSIONAL

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR DESTINY

N

ow what’s a dentist doing talking about destiny I hear you say, has she gone all New Age on us?

Well no…. but for many of us our destiny is that we will lose teeth as we by Christine Parker age, for me that’s too many. Modern BDS (GDC 72136) dentistry is based on tried and tested practice, if your dentist is advising you to floss or clean between your teeth its because they know it reduces your risk of cavities and gum disease. Both major factors in tooth loss. Here at Howardian Dental we’re so passionate about educating our patients on the care of their mouth we take a whole hour at the first appointment to carefully examine you, give you specific advice on general cleaning and more specific advice for problem areas. Our trained Oral Health Educator will explain how small changes in your diet can make a big difference to your oral health. We operate a risk assessment for your risk of further cavities and gum disease and we then help you to manage and reduce those risks to achieve the healthiest mouth you can. We offer truly personal dental care and the results we see speak volumes about the effectiveness of our methods, patients who ‘always needed a filling ‘ are returning with healthy, clean mouths they can be proud of. Want that confidence a sparkling smile can bring then call Jan at Howardian Dental and take control of your Destiny.

Here’s how to buy a new car Buying a new car can be riddled with stress and anxiety, but it doesn’t have to be. Here’s how the buying process can be made easier, and what to look out for. RESEARCH THE CAR

Research everything you can about the car you’re looking at. When it comes to buying from a dealer, making sure you know everything about a certain model can make all the difference. Don’t be afraid to be choosy. Pick a colour, specification and engine and stick with that. CHOOSING A DEALER – FRANCHISE OR INDEPENDENT

Franchised dealers get first access to the latest

cars and technology, and are therefore potentially better equipped at answering questions. In terms of aftersales and repairs, they have the manufacturer’s support. They’ll also have a good selection of used vehicles that have been well maintained in their servicing department. An independent dealer might not be able to offer you different options of the model you’re looking at, but they will be keen to do a deal and will offer the backup of a well-established business. CHECK THEM OUT ONLINE

Look through your chosen dealer’s online reviews thoroughly, to see how they treat their customers and deal with aftersales issues.

Dealers are often pressed to reach quarterly targets, which means the end of March, June, September and December could result in a better deal – potentially saving you thousands of pounds.

end you’ll be offered a ‘balloon’ when you can pay off the remainder of the car’s value or return it to the dealer. Personal leasing is a good option if you’re planning on frequently changing your car, although you have to pay three months’ rental in advance, and there’s no option to buy it at the end of the deal. Or you could pay cash!

TEST DRIVE

CASH OR FINANCE

DON’T BE SCARED OF WALKING AWAY

Asking friends, neighbours and relatives about a potential dealership can be useful too. PICK YOUR PURCHASE TIME

On a test drive, it’s likely that the salesperson will accompany you, but don’t let that stop you from pressing all of the buttons and getting a real feel for the vehicle. Ensure that your test route features a range of different corners, roundabouts and road surfaces – and check the car works for you. There’s a variety of ways to pay at a dealer. With hire purchase, you pay a deposit and repay the remaining balance in monthly instalments, at which point you’ll own the vehicle outright. With personal contract purchase (PCP) you pay a deposit followed by monthly payments, but at the

Haggling remains crucial and even with used cars there will be some wiggle room. You should never pay the full price for a car, and dealers are prepared for this, so go in strong and stick to your guns. Don’t be afraid to ask for free additions and discounts on servicing plans. The worst they can do is say no! There are thousands of available cars and hundreds of dealerships, so don’t be scared to walk away if things don’t feel right, and don’t be pressured into a deal – the final decision is entirely yours! PROTECTING YOUR HOME FROM WINTER WEATHER

A

lthough we can wrap up warm this winter, buildings face the elements without protection. Water from heavy rain and snow can enter buildings through cracks or holes, and if drains and gutters are not clear of debris then water won’t be able to escape.

Are your walls damp, stained, contain salt marks or do the decorations feel flaky? If so, then it’s likely there is an ingress of water and that your building needs additional damp proofing. Checking and repairing defective pointing and masonry is the first line of defence. If the masonry is porous then fitting a cavity drain membrane is one solution against water ingress. The application of external waterproof cream can also create a water repellent barrier. Peter Cox offer a masonry cream that repels rain penetration and is scientifically proven to reduce heat loss in single skin masonry – with an energy savings of up to 29% on solid walls. If water soaks into masonry, then freezes and expands this could lead to the masonry becoming ‘spalled’ and the face delaminating. The waterproof cream repels this rainwater retaining the thermal values of the dry masonry. It is also ‘micro-porous, meaning the wall doesn’t trap water vapour (condensation) inside the property. Peter Cox offer a number of damp proofing and structural repair solutions that are cost-effective, clean and non-intrusive, all tailored appropriately to your property. LIONS TAKE ON PICKERING BECK CLEAN-UP

R

yedale Lions took to the water in Operation Clean-up along Pickering Beck (September 27). More than a dozen volunteers helped remove choking weeds, debris and rubbish from the stretch of the water between Beck Isle Museum and the Ropery car park, filling many bulk waste bins and bags. The Lions initiative was in support of Richard Askew, of Firthland Road, Pickering. For three years

the welder has dedicated hundreds of hours of his spare time to working along the riverbank single-handed, or sometimes with his 11-year-old daughter Jade, to remove dumped waste and clear up the water course. “The work that Richard puts in voluntarily to keep the beck tidy is incredible. When we heard about how he could do with some help before the winter sets in we were happy to lend a hand,” said Lions president, Frank Hayward. Richard was delighted with the assistance offered by the Lions and also individual extra volunteers from the Co-op and Willowgate Bistro. “What a really productive day,” said Richard. “We shifted masses of weed and rubbish blocking the beck. The Lions were absolutely amazing and many local residents and visitors said well done.” Shops, including the Co-op, Russell’s Cafe, Cooplands Bakery, No 4 Bar and Jewsons, showed their support with staff help and donations of hot drinks, cakes, hot food and tools. Locals showed their appreciation by donating to a riverside street collection for the SASH charity.

The Gift of Reading Looking for the perfect book to give someone this Christmas? THE GIVER OF STARS Jojo Moyes

THE SECRET SERIES Pseudonymous Bosch

THE HAIRY BIKERS’ ONE POT WONDERS

SWEET SORROW David Nicholls It’s 1997. Charlie Lewis has just left school and has one long summer ahead of him. Joining a theatre group wasn’t in his plans, but if that’s what it takes to win the love of Fran Fisher, he’s prepared to unleash his (very) hidden thespian.

NEVER HAVE I EVER Joshilyn Jackson

THE TEN THOUSAND DOORS OF JANUARY Alix E. Harrow

Times are hard in Kentucky at the end of the Great Depression. Five women set out to bring some light back into people’s lives, through books. This isn’t your average mobile library; the librarians have to travel hundreds of miles every week, on horseback. A great story, great characters and great writing.

Si King and Dave Myers Create delicious dishes with minimum effort and mess. Recipes include Sausage and Bean Tray Bake, and Boozy Syllabub Trifle. A seemingly innocent game to liven up a book club turns into a tense game of cat and mouse as one woman threatens to reveal a long-buried secret. A good choice for fans of twisting, suspense-packed thrillers.

Young adventure fans are sure to appreciate this series, starting with the first book – The Name of This Book is Secret. Danger, mystery, friendship, villains and humour abound.

January Scaller finds her first Door and it leads to somewhere far from her cosseted life as the foster daughter of a rich man. Little girls grow up and learn not to believe in the impossible. But then a strange book appears... One of the best fantasy books of 2019.

Dear Diary,

www.happypawsboarding.co.uk

I must be honest with you, I’m a bit worried about something.

THE SPOTLESS DOG Mobile Dog washing & grooming service

When the leaves start to fall and the nights get darker I start to hear lots of noise outside, loud whooshing and banging, it’s so loud that I’m scared to go outside and would rather hide under my bed or behind the sofa until it’s all finished. It used to happen on only one night but now it seems to be every time it gets dark around this time of year.

Have your dog washed, groomed and clipped in style wherever you are! My van comes equipped with everything from a table to it’s own supply of warm water, shower and turbo drier. Nails & Ears • Clipping & De-shedding Warm water wash • Turbo dried • Fully insured • In business since 2006

This year my mum has made me a den to hide in with a blanket over the top to try and make it quieter for me. She’s also put my favourite toys in there and my absolute favourite thing a licki mat covered in peanut butter, that distracts me from anything and takes me to my happy place! I’m feeling a little bit chilled out in general, maybe it has something to do with the smell from the plug near my bed? I’ve also noticed some extra tablets in my food, I don’t mind eating them though as my mum tells me I’ve been a good boy when I eat them and sometimes puts them in peanut butter, yummy. ‘Small enough to care, big enough to cope’

Winter Hanging Baskets by Pippa Greenwood

I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for hanging baskets – they are a great way to create your own miniature gardening space, do exactly what you want by the way of colours clashing or subtle, and once they’ve started to grow away and establish they’re a perfect way to make even the gloomiest back yard look more cheerful, or the prettiest patio look even more gorgeous. Making a hanging basket is not difficult, and within a few weeks of planting one up you’ll wish you had made more. Although traditionally a summer planting feature, hanging baskets work just as well for the winter months, so why not create a few seasonal splashes of colour to keep your spirits up over the coming months? Plenty of plants make for a good colourful basket, so start with a visit to your local garden centre or nursery to see what is available.

of insulation for when temperatures drop, as well as keeping the compost and plants in place. In addition you’ll need a basket (you can always reuse a summer one, no need to spend more than necessary), and I suggest a 35cm (14”) diameter one as it can take more plants and, because it is larger, resists cold better. You’ll also need some compost.

There are lots of plants you might use, including winterflowering pansies (I am fond of the purple and yellow varieties) and heathers, Gaultheria with its waxy red berries, dianthus for late autumn into early winter and assorted miniature shrubs, including variegated Pieris, Choisya ternata ‘Sundance’ and variegated euonymus that will help give structure and colour. The shrubs have the potential to grow to full size eventually but meanwhile look great in a container for a year or two before being planted in the garden. You will also need a liner and I recommend a thicker, almost felt-like one as this helps to provide plenty

There is nothing worse than trying to plant up a basket that keeps rolling about, so stand it in a large flower pot before you start. Once the liner is firmly in place, remove the chain at one anchor point or else it will get in the way as you try to plant. You can reattach it later. The liner will protrude above the edges of the basket at this stage but a little rim helps to keep the compost in place. Use good quality multi-purpose compost, firming it gently, and fill the basket about half full. Mesh baskets are great because you can plant through the sides with ease. Cut holes in the liner then insert small plants such as pansies at regular intervals around the sides of the basket. It usually damages the plants less if you insert them from the outside inwards – that way they may suffer a little root damage but the foliage and any flowers remain undamaged. Nestle the roots into

the compost and make sure that the liner is back in position after the last plant is in place. Now add more compost to cover the roots of the winter-flowering pansies or other side plantings and firm again gently. Next get the central plant in place and add three more upright plants such as miniature shrubs, equally spaced around the edges. For extra colour, add more winter bedding around the very outermost edge of the basket. Pinch out any faded flowers as you go then add more compost, carefully filling in any gaps before you water it in thoroughly. Your hanging basket will soon fill out and become even more colourful. Give the roots a chance to establish by standing the basket in a sheltered spot for a week or two before hanging it in position, just watering it if necessary. Regular deadheading and removal of faded flowers plus a feed with a high potash fertiliser after about a month will keep it looking great, well into the spring.
