elcome to a (very busy) November. I wouldn’t describe it as a feng shui or anything ‘deep’, but we’ve been rearranging the furniture in our offices. For the past years we’ve been working in two offices and, with much running across the landing in between, some days have seemed long. And idle office chat isn’t the same when needing a megaphone! Work shouldn’t just be about getting stuff done before going home. It’s such a huge part of our lives and the social aspect is as important. So we’ve all moved back into one office, making the other for a meetings and quiet room. Busy, bustling, open offices are a bit like marmite. Some people like the hubbub, others prefer near-silence for to getting things done. Whereas the ‘experts’ suggest it fosters creativity, brainstorming and team-work – the essence of the Handy Mags! All that aside, a fresh looks seem to have made us all more energetic and working together has resulted in this month’s magazine being even fuller with local information, businesses, events and articles for you to enjoy! With the now darker evenings, how about an evening at a local theatre or cinema? We have lots to choose from this month from York Theatre Royal to NE Musicals and York Musical Theatre. There is something for everyone from Miracle on 34th Street and Jesus Christ Superstar to the very scary Woman in Black. Going to the theatre seems to have become popular again in recent years. There is nothing like seeing something live and our local theatres have a fantastic range of high quality shows right on our doorstep.

CHARLIE’S COLUMN Autism
Autism is a part of my life. My family had to grow up with a very fussy child (bath temperatures and sensitive ears alongside big meltdowns) and there are still things I have carried over with me to adulthood. The main one for me is quite simple but a change to it could ruin my day: Routine. And don’t my parents know it’s crucial for them as well. I remember when I first got my own routine going on starting secondary school and I got it spot on- Arrive at 8:30am, spend at least 15 minutes in Learning Support before going to my first class. At lunch I’d always sit at the same table, hang out with the same mates at break time. A couple of years into my education, the timetable was changed from 5 lessons a day to 3 ,being two hours compared to one. It threw and unsettled me just because my routine was out of sync. One of the only things I had control over had been taken away. I couldn’t control missing almost a full summer to epileptic seizures, I couldn’t guess how many days I’d miss each year. And I had a long adjustment period to get my control back. 700,000 is the estimated figure of people on the autistic spectrum in the UK. It increases further to 2.8 million if you include their families. Now that’s a LOT of people living with Autism on a daily basis. I’ve always embraced my Autism diagnosis rather than let it impact my life as a young adult. I’ve gotten better in some ways: my hatred of loud noises as a toddler disappeared, as has having to have a certain temperature for a bath. I still obsess over video games, films (BLADE RUNNER 2049 and DUNKIRK are noticeable examples of me talking about them constantly) and music. (sorry, not really sorry dad ;) I’ve grown up and accepted my diagnosis and all the caveats involved. My final message is to embrace your Autism, not to deny it. Because it’s there to stay. F
LIGHT YOUR FIRE…
ocus Fireplaces know that gathering around a hearth for warmth and a sense of belonging is perhaps hard wired into our genes, a feeling inherited from our days as cave-people. We may not need to ward off sabre-toothed tigers any more, but we all still feel safe and cosy around a fireplace. Little wonder that more often than not, even in the modern world, the focal point of any living room is a fireplace of some kind. For the residents of York and surrounding areas these essential focal points are provided by the aptly named Focus Fireplaces. A family owned business, Focus has been warming us up since 1985. It began life as a maker of surrounds with its first showroom opening as a factory outlet. The surrounds on offer quickly expanded to include other materials than wood, and the company then took the logical step of supplying both gas and electric fires, all from top quality British manufacturers. Focus now sells a huge range of fireplaces for all fuel types. In recent years, stoves have become an increasingly popular product. Rivals have come and gone in the company’s 30plus years, but Focus remains a beacon of success. Managing director Julian Somers is not revealing all the secrets, but says: “Our showroom displays fireplaces and stoves to suit all requirements, but whether it’s the ultimate model or something to suit a more modest budget, we never compromise on quality. Our products are meant to last, and be at the centre of people’s lives, and we never forget that.”
30 | Handy Mag | November 2019
Julian says that the amount of repeat business and customer recommendation not only proves his point, it is crucial. “Our reputation is paramount, and a happy customer is the best advertisement we can have.” The word ‘professional’ is dear to Julian’s heart. “We can have great products and a huge choice, but our professionalism makes us stand out. This means listening carefully to our customer’s requirements and offering first class service both before and after installation. For instance we think it’s very important to survey a property prior to any installation, which helps us offer the best possible advice. There is also a willingness to look after our customers in the long term by servicing the gas fire or stove for its working life.” Customers can expect a lead time of 3-4 weeks from order to fitting in quieter times and 5-6 weeks in busier times – and no prizes for guessing that demand is higher during the winter months! Current trends in the industry include gas stoves – good for those keeping a keen eye on fuel bills – and both gas and electric fires with larger flame displays. Whatever the fireplace fashion, Focus Fireplaces have proven that choice, service and professionalism never go out of style!

Discover the miracle
I
t’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas for the cast of NEMusicals York’s production of Meredith Wilson’s Miracle on 34th Street. The role of Susan will be played in alternate performances of this magical production by Missy Barnes and Scarlett Waugh, both of whom have performed with NEMusicals York previously as orphans in the company’s successful run of Annie earlier this year. Missy, aged 9, first appeared on stage at the age of 6 at the York Theatre Royal in The King & I as one of the king’s children. After this her love for the theatre was even more intense and she has gone on to do many productions including The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, Oliver, A Christmas Carol and Annie (all with NE Musicals) but one of her biggest performances was the Lazy Ace (written by Pauline Quirk) at London’s West End Shaftesbury theatre. Missy is thrilled to be playing the part of Susan Walker, this will be her first lead role and she

is excited to show everyone her performance. Scarlett has just turned 11. Her first big production was The Wizard of Oz at the Grand Opera House, York in April last year, when she played a Munchkin. She was then lucky enough to be chosen to perform with Stagecoach at Disneyland Paris last year. Following her debut with NEMusicals York in Annie earlier this year, she is now extremely excited to be playing the role of Susan in this exciting festive production. Miracle on 34th Street: The Musical, when it first appeared on Broadway in 1963 was called ‘Here’s Love’. Filled with humor, spectacle and such beloved songs as ‘It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas’, this joyous, heartwarming musical is pure family entertainment. NE Musicals have brought this amazing Christmas story to life with a brilliant set design to capture the streets of New York and Macy’s department store Performing in this new production will be Emma Louise Dickinson in the role of Susan’s Mother, Doris and Kit Stroud as Fred Gaily. Stephen Tearle will be Kris Kringle which he played six years ago and will be joined this time round by Kevin Bowes as Doris’s personal assistant, Mr Shellhammer and Paul Jefferson as R.H. Macy. Tickets cost £13-£18 (or £49 for a family ticket) and are available at www.josephrowntreetheatre. co.uk or call 01904 501935.

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR COMING TO YORK 27 – 30 November Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York York Musical Theatre Company has been busy auditioning for the global phenomenon, Jesus Christ Superstar. This rockopera from Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice has been wowing audiences around the world for decades and the Company is excited to be bringing this thrilling show to the York stage. The show follows the last week of Jesus’ life, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot, and exploring the struggles and personal relationships between his followers and disciples. Reflecting the rock roots that defined a generation, the multi award-winning score includes songs such as Superstar, Everything’s Alright and I Don’t Know How To Love Him. A gritty and touching emotional rollercoaster that will leave you spellbound.
40 | Handy Mag | November 2019
Director Paul Laidlaw and a Creative Team, including Musical Director John Atkin, have pulled together a fantastic cast for the show. Paul spoke about the audition process: “We were thrilled to have such a great response to auditions, particularly from so many new faces to the Company. We’ve always been proud of the fact that we welcome any new people to join any show that we do and if you’re new, you can walk into lead roles, and that’s what’s happened. Our actors playing Jesus, Judas, Pilate and Mary Magdalene are all new to the Company and it’s really encouraging for to see. The strength in the singing is staggering and is going to sound just fantastic on stage.” Tickets on sale now. £18 adults, Concessions £13 Book online at www.josephrowntreetheatre.co.uk

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR DESTINY
N
ow what’s a dentist doing talking about destiny I hear you say, has she gone all New Age on us?
Well no…. but for many of us our destiny is that we will lose teeth as we by Christine Parker age, for me that’s too many. Modern BDS (GDC 72136) dentistry is based on tried and tested practice, if your dentist is advising you to floss or clean between your teeth its because they know it reduces your risk of cavities and gum disease. Both major factors in tooth loss. Here at Howardian Dental we’re so passionate about educating our patients on the care of their mouth we take a whole hour at the first appointment to carefully examine you, give you specific advice on general cleaning and more specific advice for problem areas. Our trained Oral Health Educator will explain how small changes in your diet can make a big difference to your oral health. We operate a risk assessment for your risk of further cavities and gum disease and we then help you to manage and reduce those risks to achieve the healthiest mouth you can. We offer truly personal dental care and the results we see speak volumes about the effectiveness of our methods, patients who ‘always needed a filling ‘ are returning with healthy, clean mouths they can be proud of. Want that confidence a sparkling smile can bring then call Jan at Howardian Dental and take control of your Destiny.

NIGEL SLATER’S TOAST
From making the perfect sherry trifle, waging war over cakes through to the playground politics of sweets and the rigid rules of restaurant dining, this is a moving and evocative tale of love, lost and … toast © Simon Annand
Director by Jonnie Riordan Written by Henry Filloux-Bennett York Theatre Royal, 19 – 23 November Press performance Tues 19 Nov, 7.30pm Nigel Slater’s Toast at York Theatre Royal from 19 to 23 November is a new play based on food writer Nigel Slater’s award-winning autobiography. Vividly recreating suburban England in the 1960s, his childhood is told through the tastes and smells he grew up with and the audience is enveloped by the evocative sights and sounds of cookery that defined the definitive moments of his youth. The play is written by Henry Filloux-Bennett, Chief Executive and Artistic Director of the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield, where the UK tour of Toast launched after a season at The Other Palace in London. Nigel said: “I’m thrilled that the play will continue its journey after The Other Palace, visiting venues around the country.”
His writing has won the National Book Awards, the Glenfiddich Trophy, the James Beard Award, the British Biography of the Year and the Andre Simon Memorial Prize. Television awards include a Guild of Food Writers Award for his BBC1 series Simple Suppers and the BBC Food Personality of the Year. Playing Nigel Slater in Toast is Giles Cooper whose theatre credits include This House, People and After the Dance (National Theatre) and Henry V, The Knight of the Burning Pestle and The Duchess of Malfi (Shakespeare’s Globe). Playing Nigel’s father is Blair Plant, who first worked on the stage crew at York Theatre Royal 34 years ago while studying at York St John College. His credits as an actor at the theatre include Blithe Spirit, Wars of the Roses, Madness of King George III, Habeas Corpus and Having a Ball. He also appeared in York Theatre Royal’s Olivier Awardwinning production of The Railway Children at both Kings Cross and Waterloo Theatres in London.
He has been the food columnist for The Observer for 25 years and is the author of a collection of bestselling books and presenter of nine BBC television series. His memoir Toast – The Story of a Boy’s Hunger won six major awards, has been translated into five languages and became a BBC film starring Helena Bonham Carter and Freddie Highmore. His latest book Greenfeast was published by HarperCollins. © Piers Foley 50 | Handy Mag | November 2019

Roman Site in Morocco
R
ising above the fertile plain near Meknes, Volubilis scatters its ruins on a lonely hilltop with superb views all around. There are oleanders morning glory and olive groves, and beyond the gently rolling land you can see Mount Zerhoun and the holy town of Moulay Idriss. But Volubilis stands in a class of its own, listed by UNESCO for “its outstanding importance at the frontier of the Roman Empire”. First settled by local tribes, the ancient capital of Mauretania flourished from the third century BC, trading with Carthage until the Romans annexed it in AD 40. The Berbers took it back around 285 and in the late eighth century, Volubilis became the capital of Idriss the First, founder of the Moroccan State. Yet by the end of the fourteenth century it was abandoned and later destroyed by the Lisbon earthquake. 52 | Handy Mag | November 2019
The 1920s excavations revealed a 42-hectare site once enclosed by a massive wall dotted with bastions and gates. Much remains to be unearthed but as soon as you reach the entrance, the House of Orpheus takes your breath away with its hammam – hot, warm and cold rooms – and its fabulous mosaics of dolphins and local fauna charmed by Orpheus playing the lute. Then beyond the Thermal Baths and their communal toilets – a most sociable place for the Romans – you are in the heart of town, gazing at the paved square of the Forum once decorated with statues, the Capitol dedicated to three gods and the impressive remains of the Basilica where justice was delivered and, today, storks build their nests on top of the columns. Then a Triumphal Arch honours Emperor Caracalla near the House of the Acrobat and that of the Dog, best known for the giant rock phallus that identified

the brothel. Other attractions include the North Baths and olive press and more houses famous for mosaics such as the Labours of Hercules, Dionysus and the Four Seasons, Nymphs Bathing and Wild Beasts. But best of all perhaps is the romantic House of Venus with erotic designs sure to entertain its royal resident Juba II, a King of Mauretania loyal to Rome. These luxurious dwellings were in the northern district crossed by the main ‘highway’, the Decumanus Maximus as straight as an arrow, lined with columns and so well-preserved it sends shivers down your spine. Few visitors venture this far in the blazing sun but it’s the most inspiring place to reflect and feel the past almost within reach. Best time to visit is in the spring when the grass is lush and green and poppies splash colour among daisies and asphodels. All you can hear are storks rattling their beaks or the occasional bleating of sheep in the meadows. Meanwhile, down in the valley, be sure to enjoy the ‘golden apples’ so loved by the Romans – we call them oranges – and when you sip a glass of wine, remember they planted the first vineyards almost 2,000 years ago. From Open Plan To Broken Plan Despite the allure of large, bright spaces, it is not necessarily convenient to live in an openplan home all the time. Hence the development of ‘broken plan’ design.
Although everyone loves open-plan living, sometimes we need a quiet, separate space. Huge open spaces can be difficult to heat, too, and noise can sometimes be an issue. ‘Broken plan’ is a practical evolution of open plan, retaining the elements we love, particularly good light and a feeling of openness, but with subtle elements to
divide large spaces into more manageable ones, with different zones for different activities. Spaces may even be opened up or closed off as desired. Broken plan aims to be the best of both worlds. One way to achieve the broken-plan effect is with differences in floor levels, perhaps with a step between the sitting room and the dining room. A ceiling can be lowered in one area of a large, open room to enhance a sense of intimacy. And in homes with very high ceilings, a mezzanine level, perhaps as an office, snug or guest bedroom, combines openplan feel with practicality. Other solutions include internal glass walls or floor-to-ceiling steel-framed windows to subdivide a space. More typically, especially where two groundfloor reception rooms have been knocked through, a great way to add flexibility is to add glazed or timber

double doors. Ideally the doors would slide and fold away, or else be hinged so that they fit against the walls when open. Alternatively, connect/separate two rooms with pocket doors, which slide into the slim walls on each side – great for, say, a dressing room off a bedroom. Temporary dividers are convenient and less expensive: a screen, for example, a large floorstanding bookcase, or even simply a slender console table. They can be relatively easily moved around or removed as necessary. An open-plan space can be divided visually, using simple tricks such as changes in paint colour or floor finish and mini ‘rooms’ are easily created by grounding furniture arrangements on a rug or on an area of contrast flooring. Finally, employ lighting as a powerful tool to delineate space. Form zones of different lighting types, including pendants and wall lights, and carefully position floor and table lamps. If possible, install different circuits (controlled by switches or dimmers) to break down the spaces and illuminate different parts to suit your needs, whether it be a living area or bedroom, a kitchen or a dining area. PROTECTING YOUR HOME FROM WINTER WEATHER
A
lthough we can wrap up warm this winter, buildings face the elements without protection. Water from heavy rain and snow can enter buildings through cracks or holes, and if drains and gutters are not clear of debris then water won’t be able to escape.
Are your walls damp, stained, contain salt marks or do the decorations feel flaky? If so, then it’s likely there is an ingress of water and that your building needs additional damp proofing. Checking and repairing defective pointing and masonry is the first line of defence. If the masonry is porous then fitting a cavity drain membrane is one solution against water ingress. The application of external waterproof cream can also create a water repellent barrier. Peter Cox offer a masonry cream that repels rain penetration and is scientifically proven to reduce heat loss in single skin masonry – with an energy savings of up to 29% on solid walls. If water soaks into masonry, then freezes and expands this could lead to the masonry becoming ‘spalled’ and the face delaminating. The waterproof cream repels this rainwater retaining the thermal values of the dry masonry. It is also ‘micro-porous, meaning the wall doesn’t trap water vapour (condensation) inside the property. Can you bag a bargain on Black Friday November is the month of big deals. Are some too good to be true?
B deal?
lack Friday is the annual sales event that crossed the Atlantic to become huge in the UK too. But does that mean you’ll get a good
Black Friday is actually two big days of deals: Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Black Friday is the start of the Christmas shopping season in the US, because it’s when retailers traditionally ran ‘door-buster’ sales on the day after the Thanksgiving holiday. The following Monday has been dubbed Cyber Monday because apparently everybody goes back to work, panics about Christmas presents and hits the online shops on the same day. Black Friday gets bigger every year. A long weekend became a week of deals, until now Black Friday runs for two weeks or more, with all kinds of deals announced well in advance as well as flash ‘lightning deals’ on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It’s become the most important part of the retail calendar not just for technology but for many retailers selling fashion, homeware and jewellery too. It’s a good time to buy smart home technology, which attracts massive discounts at this time of year. Can you really get good deals? The answer is a qualified yes. There are plenty of deals to be had, but some of them are illusory: common tactics include listing RRPs that no sensible person would pay – you’ll see this a lot with TVs, which promise massive discounts on recommended retail prices nobody paid – or gently increasing prices in the run-up to Black Friday so they can be lowered in time for the big event and labelled with a big ‘Sale!’ sticker. And like any sale, 62 | Handy Mag | November 2019
often the deals are on products that are being phased out to make room for new products or because they’re no longer being made. End-of-line products aren’t necessarily bad buys, but research anything before you decide whether or not to spend. Before you hit the ‘Buy Now’ button on a bargain, search for it in Pricespy.co.uk. That shows you what other retailers are selling the product for, and tells you whether you’re really getting a good deal. It works on everything from DVDs to dishwashers and it also tells you whether products are in stock: a deal isn’t much use if you can’t actually order the product. If you’re looking at a deal on Amazon, have a look at uk.camelCamelCamel. com. Simply copy and paste the address of the Amazon product listing or the exact product name and it’ll show you the price history – so for example if we search for the cult favourite Instant Pot pressure cooker we can see that while its price varies from £70 to £130, it’s usually sold for around £90. One of the simplest tricks to Black Friday and Cyber Monday is to make sure you only buy things you actually need. This time last year we bought some fancy headphones on Black Friday; this week we’re selling them on eBay, still in the original sealed packaging. A bargain isn’t a bargain if you don’t use it. Images: top left clockwise - CamelCamelCamel lets you see any Amazon product’s price history. Amazon offers big Black Friday discounts on products such as its Echo speaker. Hue lights are another safe bet for Black Friday discounts. Instant Pot electric pressure cooker, a consistent Black Friday top seller.

Short Story A Busy Year for Best in Show “Have you displayed it in pride of place all year?” Roy Cheddar, local councillor responsible for overseeing the Village in Bloom award ceremony, optimistically surveyed Doreen’s chaotic living room. “I can’t see it anywhere.” “It was on the sideboard to start with,” Doreen dithered, looking under the settee cushions, “but the cat took umbrage so I moved it out of harm’s way.” “So where is it now?” Roy asked impatiently. Doreen had won the coveted ‘Best in Show’ trophy for her winter-flowering baskets last year. His task was to retrieve that trophy, in order for it to be presented to this year’s winner. He had hoped to be in and out in five minutes.
“Follow me.” Doreen opened the door of her downstairs toilet. “I had a flood in here.” “You used it for a leaky lavatory?” Roy asked in horror. “Well it was just the right size,” Doreen nodded, “and the cat had already been sick in it by then.” “The cat did what?” Roy wasn’t sure if he wanted to see this cup again. “She’d eaten all the bread sauce,” Doreen shrugged, “and sometimes you’ve just got to grab what’s handy.” “It’s going to need a professional clean.” Roy frowned, wondering whose job that was going to be. “So what happened after that?” “It’s funny you should ask,” Doreen said. “Our Elsie visited with Nanna’s ashes, and there was another cat incident.” “Of course there was.” Roy considered this cat a menace. “It knocked the urn over,” Doreen continued, “so we had to scoop everything up and…” “Put it in the trophy?” Roy asked miserably.
“I remember!” Doreen straightened up. “I took it down the Feathers to celebrate.”
“Like I said,” Doreen shrugged, “you’ve got to grab what’s handy.”
“You took it to the pub?” Roy raised his eyebrows. “That wasn’t very wise.”
“Elsie’s got the trophy then?” Roy pulled out his phone. “Shall we give her a ring.”
“Then I won the meat raffle.” Doreen pushed past him into the kitchen. “I carried my chops home in it.”
“Good idea,” Doreen nodded emphatically. “What’s the time difference in Tasmania?”
“And then what happened to it?” Roy hurried after her as she opened the freezer door.
That was enough; Roy made an executive decision.
“I put it in here.” Doreen rummaged through the freezer, while a bag of peas cascaded onto the lino. “But it’s a huge silver-plated cup,” Roy said crossly. “You can’t put it in a freezer.” “Well it’s not in there now anyway.” Doreen closed the door with an icy blast. “I’m sure I used it for my bread sauce at Christmas.”
“It looks like it’s gone for good,” he sighed, opening the front door. “I’ll have to buy a new one. I’m very disappointed in you Doreen.” Doreen pulled a tissue from her sleeve. “I’m sorry I’ve let you down.” She blew her nose. “I tried to look after it, but a lot can happen in one year.”
“That’s not what it’s intended for,” Roy frowned. “You’re supposed to display it.”
“There, there, can’t be helped.” Roy softened. “I’ll get straight back to the office and sort this out.” He waved as he walked down the path, deciding this was a lesson learned: not everyone can be trusted with precious things.
“I’ve got no time to dust knick-knacks.” Doreen waved her hand. “Everything has to earn its keep in my house.”
If he’d been paying more attention he might have noticed the trophy-shaped dust-free patch on Doreen’s sideboard, or that she didn’t even own a cat.
“After Christmas, what then?” Roy sighed.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH By PCSO Andy Smith 5520
W
hen the Neighbourhood Watch concept was brought into being, it was based on the simple philosophy of “getting together with your neighbours to reduce local crime and disorder to make your neighbourhood a safer and better place to live, work and play”. With changes in society make-up, and developments in technology, the traditional form of Neighbourhood Watch is a model which has needed updating for some time. Neighbourhood Watch is about building community spirit and good relations, bringing together local people with common goals, tackling crime and disorder and keeping an eye out for one another and on each other’s property, working together as the eyes and ears of the neighbourhood, picking up and taking action on anything that could cause concern or worry. It is not about being a ‘nosy neighbour’ but about being a good citizen and caring for and supporting your community. The Citizens in Policing team have been looking at the existing model of Neighbourhood Watch and changing it to one which fits in with the above ethos but with societal and policing changes also accounted for. With the implementation of the Community Messaging System, North Yorkshire Police has been able to keep in touch with communities all across north Yorkshire, making them aware of incidents in their area and providing crime prevention advice and information on how to keep safe directly to people’s phones and email inboxes. With the implementation of this system contact with the local communities is maintained and even developed further through interactions on CMS and Social Media Groups. On the three stage process the level of response
66 | Handy Mag | November 2019
is based on the level of need. The areas where there are higher instances of crime and antisocial behaviour are quite rightly offered the support to try to reduce these levels and would benefit the most from being within the Neighbourhood Watch network (known as Our Watch). Policing demand is also based on the level of need and the integration of this model based on demand and policing requirements is the fluid way forward whilst meeting the expectations of the local communities. The model allows local communities to build the resilience and networks whilst still maintaining the connections with their local policing teams. Residents always have a better understanding of their neighbourhood and recognize unfamiliar occurrences, people or vehicles and hear comments of anything suspicious. They do not always appreciate how the police could value this as a missing part of the intelligence jigsaw and a major contribution to improving criminal detection rates, particularly in rural areas. Through social media channels and Community Messaging this information can be shared with ease. The new model has not been created to change schemes that are currently active but can be used to complement them. It is important that residents interested in setting up a watch in their area checks www.ourwatch.org.uk and enters their postcode to see if there are any active watches in their area before making contact. The emphasis will be on communities to maintain their own Social Media Groups and their own Community Messaging account, with input from Police on Crime Prevention, how to set social media groups up (if required) and how to sign people up to community messaging. If there is a requirement to set up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme , the Local Policing team will be available for the initial setup, but it will be the responsibility of the Scheme Coordinator to sign up to the OurWatch website, arrange meetings with residents, and order signs for the street , all of which are available on our website. For any Neighbourhood Watch enquiries please contact us on NHWenquiries@northyorkshire.pnn. police.uk To join a scheme: Visit www.ourwatch.org.uk

Here’s how to buy a new car By James Baggott CHECK THEM OUT ONLINE Once you’ve picked the dealer you fancy, look through their online reviews thoroughly. You’ll be able to easily see how well they treat their customers and also how good they are at dealing with aftersales issues.
B
uying a new car. It’s often referred to as one of the biggest purchases of your life, after a house. It’s why getting your hands on a new motor can be riddled with stress and anxiety, but it doesn’t have to be that way. We’ve picked out some of the crucial ways in which the buying process can be made easier, and what to look out for. RESEARCH THE CAR It may seem trivial, but you need to research everything you can about the car you’re looking at. Knowledge is power when it comes to buying from a dealer, and making sure you know everything about a certain model can make all the difference when it comes to picking one up. Don’t be afraid to be choosy, either. Pick a colour, specification and engine and stick with that. CHOOSING A DEALER – FRANCHISE OR INDEPENDENT This is an important decision to make. Franchised dealers get first access to the latest cars and technology, and are therefore potentially better equipped at answering any questions you may have. In terms of aftersales and repairs, they have the manufacturer’s support too. They’ll also have a good selection of used vehicles that will have been well maintained in the main dealer servicing department. There is, of course, the option to buy from an independent dealer too. They might not have the ability to offer you different options of the model you’re looking at, but they will be keen to do a deal and will offer the backup of a well-established business should things go wrong.
68 | Handy Mag | November 2019
You can’t beat good old-fashioned word of mouth either – asking friends, neighbours and relatives about a potential dealership can be useful too. Pick your purchase time Believe it or not, you can get a better deal depending on when you buy. Dealers are often pressed to reach quarterly targets, which means the end of March, June, September and December could result in a better deal. It’s a small tip, but one that could potentially see you saving thousands of pounds if the purchase is timed correctly. TEST DRIVE Once you’ve seen a car you like then it’s time to get behind the wheel. The likelihood is that the salesperson will accompany you in the car, but don’t let that stop you from pressing all of the buttons and getting a real feel for the vehicle in general. Ensure that your test route features a range of different corners, roundabouts and road surfaces – and most importantly, check the car works for you. CASH OR FINANCE There’s a variety of ways to pay at a dealer. They can offer hire purchase, which sees you paying a deposit and repaying the remaining balance in monthly instalments. At the end of the payment term, you’ll own the vehicle outright. Then there’s personal contract purchase, or PCP. Here, you’ll pay a deposit followed by monthly payments, but at the end you’ll be offered a ‘balloon’ when you can pay off the remainder of the car’s value or return it to the dealer. And then there’s personal leasing. This is a good option if you’re planning on frequently changing your car, although you do have to usually stump up three months’ rental in advance, and there’s no option to buy it at the end of the deal. Or you could pay cash!

HAGGLE It’s an age-old process, but haggling remains just as crucial today as it’s always been. Even with used cars there’s always going to be a certain amount of wiggle room. You shouldn’t ever have to pay the full price for a car, and dealers are prepared for this. Go in strong and stick to your guns – it’s only the same as they’ll be doing. Remember, if you don’t ask you don’t get, so don’t be afraid to ask for free additions and discounts on servicing plans. The worst they can do is say no! DON’T BE SCARED OF WALKING AWAY Remember, there are thousands of cars available on the market and hundreds of dealerships too. There is always another car, so don’t be scared to walk away if things don’t feel right. Don’t be pressured into any deal either – the final decision is entirely yours, and if you don’t like the way things are heading, walk straight out of those doors!

Of course you will also be able to look around the Adoption Centre and see the cats in care looking for new homes, cuties like the lovely Xena here. Staff will be on hand to answer any of your cat care questions and help you if you are considering adopting a new cat.

n Sunday 24th November York Cats Protection are holding their first festive Catmas Fayre! With stalls from York Gin, Temple Spa, goodies for your cat, seasonal gifts for your loved ones, Christmas cards and a sugary cake stall it’s the perfect opportunity to pick up some presents and stocking fillers for Christmas whilst helping to support the cats in care at the Adoption Centre.

Trigger came to the centre as his previous owner could no longer take care of him, he is a sweet lad but can be a little unsure to begin with. He will need some further training which he will enjoy and is suitable to live with another compatible dog and children aged 10 years and over. Ella is a sweet girl who came to the centre as her owners could no longer keep her. She is a playful, active girl so we are looking for an equally active family who will take her on plenty of long walks and 70 | Handy Mag | November 2019

I must be honest with you, I’m a bit worried about something.

When the leaves start to fall and the nights get darker I start to hear lots of noise outside, loud whooshing and banging, it’s so loud that I’m scared to go outside and would rather hide under my bed or behind the sofa until it’s all finished. It used to happen on only one night but now it seems to be every time it gets dark around this time of year.
We supply spares, fix & replace all
This year my mum has made me a den to hide in with a blanket over the top to try and make it quieter for me. She’s also put my favourite toys in there and my absolute favourite thing a licki mat covered in peanut butter, that distracts me from anything and takes me to my happy place! I’m feeling a little bit chilled out in general, maybe it has something to do with the smell from the plug near my bed? I’ve also noticed some extra tablets in my food, I don’t mind eating them though as my mum tells me I’ve been a good boy when I eat them and sometimes puts them in peanut butter, yummy. Winter Hanging Baskets by Pippa Greenwood
I
’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for hanging baskets – they are a great way to create your own miniature gardening space, do exactly what you want by the way of colours clashing or subtle, and once they’ve started to grow away and establish they’re a perfect way to make even the gloomiest back yard look more cheerful, or the prettiest patio look even more gorgeous. Making a hanging basket is not difficult, and within a few weeks of planting one up you’ll wish you had made more. Although traditionally a summer planting feature, hanging baskets work just as well for the winter months, so why not create a few seasonal splashes of colour to keep your spirits up over the coming months?

Plenty of plants make for a good colourful basket, so start with a visit to your local garden centre or nursery to see what is available. There are lots of plants you might use, including winter-flowering pansies (I am fond of the purple and yellow varieties) and heathers, Gaultheria with its waxy red berries, dianthus for late autumn into early winter and assorted miniature shrubs, including variegated Pieris, Choisya ternata ‘Sundance’ and variegated euonymus that will help give structure and colour. The shrubs have the potential to grow to full size eventually but meanwhile look great in a container for a year or two before being planted in the garden. You will also need a liner and I recommend a thicker, almost felt-like one as this helps to provide plenty of insulation for when temperatures drop, as well as keeping the compost and plants in place. In addition you’ll need a basket (you can always reuse a summer one, no need to spend more than necessary), and I suggest a 35cm (14”) diameter one as it can take more plants and, because it is

larger, resists cold better. You’ll also need some compost. There is nothing worse than trying to plant up a basket that keeps rolling about, so stand it in a large flower pot before you start. Once the liner is firmly in place, remove the chain at one anchor point or else it will get in the way as you try to plant. You can reattach it later. The liner will protrude above the edges of the basket at this stage but a little rim helps to keep the compost in place. Use good quality multi-purpose compost, firming it gently, and fill the basket about half full. Mesh baskets are great because you can plant through the sides with ease. Cut holes in the liner then insert small plants such as pansies at regular intervals around the sides of the basket. It usually damages the plants less if you insert them from the outside inwards – that way they may suffer a little root damage but the foliage and any flowers remain undamaged. Nestle the roots into the compost and make sure that the liner is back in position after the last plant is in place.
Now add more compost to cover the roots of the winter-flowering pansies or other side plantings and firm again gently. Next get the central plant in place and add three more upright plants such as miniature shrubs, equally spaced around the edges. For extra colour, add more winter bedding around the very outermost edge of the basket. Pinch out any faded flowers as you go then add more compost, carefully filling in any gaps before you water it in thoroughly. Your hanging basket will soon fill out and become even more colourful. Give the roots a chance to establish by standing the basket in a sheltered spot for a week or two before hanging it in position, just watering it if necessary. Regular deadheading and removal of faded flowers plus a feed with a high potash fertiliser after about a month will keep it looking great, well into the spring.
