There are so many things to look forward to over Christmas; guilt-free food and drink, spending time with families, TV and games of Monopoly (well maybe not the last one!). To help you really get into the Christmas spirit, why not attend one of the local Christmas services in our centre pages this month? I’m always the last to want to go on the family trip to find the perfect Christmas tree in my house, wanting to put off the mess for as long as possible! Every year we have the same debate around spruce or pine, height and width – I just want a

simple Christmas tree whereas everyone else strives for the biggest, widest, most expensive tree they can find and fit in the house (although this doesn’t always seem to be a criteria!). Christmas trees are available all over Ryedale, from Dalby Forest to Scampston Walled Garden and Vertigrow to Yates. A massive thank you to all who have supported the Handy Mag in 2016 – from our amazing advertisers to event organisers, local groups, columnists, readers and of course my brilliant team, Nicky, Phil and Gill who have helped make my life much easier all year! I’d also like to thank our fantastic local posties who deliver the Handy Mags to every corner of the area every month, a brilliant service! Congratulations to Clare Ward of Wintringham for winning our October competition. A very Happy Christmas to you all!

M a ke t ra c ks to Low fi e l d G a ra g e t h i s w i n te r If you hate getting out of bed and venturing outside during the winter months spare a thought for your poor car. On the 2nd of December last year the AA attended an average of 1150 breakdowns every hour! The cold and icy conditions mean it’s not just you that needs an extra layer or two of protection. To ensure you and your family stay safe on the roads this winter we’ve designed our Winter Safety Check to provide that extra protection. And because we feel that everyone should stay safe this winter we’ve decided to make it completely free.

feet up with a warming appliance as this increases the risk of chilblains and can be dangerous!
BUNION PAIN
TAKING CARE OF YOUR FEET THIS WINTER
W
inter is frequently described as a challenging time when it comes to foot comfort. Carly Bodill Podiatrist describes the most frequent complaints along with some helpful suggestions.
CHILBLAINS & COLD FEET
Chilblains are painful areas that develop on areas on the feet (mainly toes), they are caused by the inability of the small blood vessels to respond changes in temperature and they are common in winter. To prevent chilblains it is important that feet are kept warm whilst outdoors by wearing socks additional to or instead of stockings, avoid thin soles shoes, wear lined boots where possible and ensure that there is plenty of toe room in the footwear. Never heat your
Bunions often feel worse in the colder months as a closed in winter shoe increases the pressure around the joint and makes people more aware of the problem. Comfort can be improved by ensuring that the toe box area of the shoe is wide fitting and that the shoe is supportive around the heel and arch area as will help relieve pressure from the bunion. If the bunion does not settle with changing footwear then further advice may be required.
HARD SKIN/SPLIT HEELS
Cracked heels can cause a lot of pain and are best avoided. To prevent cracked heels it is more effective to have a footcare routine that involves regular exfoliation and moisturising. The secret is little and often rather than trying to reduce the problem all at once. Moisturiser should be applied daily and not in-between the toes. Always check your feet so you know what is normal for you – if there is any concerns or a problem that is not settling please seek further advice from your GP or Podiatrist. by Carly Bodill Podiatrist, MSc, BSc (Hons) HCPC registered T: 01653 228026 or 07981 640041 LOGO 1

WILL YOU TEAR YOUR FAMILY APART? Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner
it wasn’t valid. And to add insult to injury, a massive Inheritance Tax bill was due.
W
hen Businessman Robin Brook died, his wife Danae assumed she’d be financially OK. Married for 14 years and owned a country estate, London property, investments and land. She thought this would automatically pass to her. But what she didn’t realise was that her husband didn’t have a valid will. She ended up being kicked out of her home with a fraction of what she thought she was entitled to. What made it worse was that Robin had actually drafted a will leaving everything to her, but hadn’t signed it. So
If you die without a will, the state decides who gets your stuff. And it might not be what you want. That much, I assume, most people vaguely know. Many assume that if a husband dies, all the estate passes to the wife and vice versa. But that’s not true. The estate is distributed according to a set of rules that depend on whether you have children, parents and siblings. But what fewer people seem to realise is that marriage automatically invalidates a will. Danae Brook isn’t the first and certainly won’t be the last to find out about all this stuff the hard way. Mark Shand, the Duchess of Cornwall’s brother died without a will. As did Jill Dando, Rik Mayall, Amy Winehouse and Prince. All of them left financial turmoil in their wake. Don’t find out about all this stuff the hard way. Get a FREE copy of my book 37 Legal Ways to slash £thousands off your Inheritance Bill now by calling 0330 100 1744 or filling out the form below.

his year, Scampston Walled Garden will open for Christmas Trees sales on the 27th November. For the first time, handmade decorations will also be on sale, crafted by the Croft Community at Camphill Village Trust. The decorations will include wreaths, pomanders and felted decorations for the tree. All proceeds will go to support the work done at the Croft Community. The Croft is a vibrant intentional community in Old Malton, and currently home to 37 community members; an inspiring group of learning disabled adults. The Croft operates a range of supported work opportunities and enterprises including a market garden, town centre café and craft workshops. Chris Legard, Scampston Estate, commented “We are delighted to be supporting the Croft Community this Christmas at Scampston. It is great to see our Christmas tree shop so full of colour! We have been really impressed with both the quality and range of products that the Croft Community have produced for the shop and have no doubt that they will prove very popular with our Christmas tree customers.” Emma Mckenzie, Enterprise Workshop Manager at the Croft Community, commented: “The residents here have been very busy making Christmas decorations. They’ve really enjoyed the creative challenge, and it’s really encouraging when they know that what they produce will be put to good use - decorating people’s trees, homes and front doors across Ryedale! “It’s also an excellent opportunity to raise the profile of all the work that we do here, and the incredible talents of the residents we have here at the Croft.” From the 27th November – 22nd December, Scampston Walled Garden will be open daily, 10.30am – 4.30pm. JACK AND THE BEANSTALK
M
alton & Norton Musical Theatres 2017 production of Jack & the Beanstalk, written by Peter Denyer, will take place at the Milton Rooms in Malton from Friday 20th January 2017 until Saturday 28th January 2017. This action packed pantomime tells the tale of how Jack (Ben Greenhough) fights and defeats the huge Giant Blunderbore and his evil henchman, Fleshcreep (Thomas Jennings), to win the heart of the beautiful Jill (Molly Teasdale). Fairy Moonbeam is played by Michelle Carter, Grabbit by Rosa Burns, and there’s plenty of comedy from a warm and sympathetic Dame Trot (Stewart Ainley) and her stupid son Silly Billy (Matilda Gledhill). With both knockabout and verbal humour, lots of audience participation and a classic Cow Milking Scene this is a pantomime that all will enjoy.

CHRISTMAS MYSTERIES BY MARY MAHON
Pick up our Christmas Order Form for all of your festive treats
It has begun... The big month has arrived and with it comes so many dusty, old traditions! Will you be hanging stockings or having a kiss under the mistletoe? Will you be decorating a Christmas tree and telling children to be good for the omniscient Santa Clause? Everyone celebrates Christmas differently, but many of us follow the same key traditions, often without knowing why. ‘Tis the season to step back into ancient history... When we decorate an evergreen tree, were complying with a superstition from Viking times! In Scandinavia, Vikings believed evergreens were special plants of the God of the Sun, so placing a decorated evergreen in your house was an offering in return for spring, instead of the unforgiving winter solstice. Similarly, kissing under the mistletoe pre-dates back to ancient Norse mythology. The trickster God, Loki, used an arrow fashioned from mistletoe to murder his brother, but the same poison was also the remedy! After mistletoe revived him, his mother vowed to plant a kiss on those passing beneath it, thus giving kissing under the mistletoe a slightly darker outlook...
Create your own personalised hamper or choose a selection of delicious patisserie treats perfect for your Christmas season
Mail Order Available
Festive Opening times: Mon 7.30am-5pm, Sun 10am-4pm (Dec only) The Patisserie, 14 Saville Street, Malton | 01653 695392 www.thepatisseriemalton.co.uk | info@thepatisseriemalton.co.uk
Hanging stockings is a more tragic story; a former monk ‘Sinter Klaus’ slid down the chimney of a suffering, motherless family to fill the three children’s stockings with gold. Whilst this is ostensibly a moral tale, the alternative outcomes suggested, such as the children being sold into slavery or left to die, reflects humanity’s darkness alongside the light. From this story we get one of the legends of Saint Nicholas; a ghost trail leads back to 280 AD to a monk who is greatly admired for his piety and kindness all year round. Whether you believe in him or not, he is undeniably a pinnacle figure at Christmas. Now whilst these traditions don’t have the same reasoning behind them anymore, they’re still intrinsic cogs in our Christmas culture, providing great morality lessons too! Yet as you’re wrestling the tree into the house, think: yes, Christmas does have so many intricate, historical roots behind it, but make this year unique! It only comes once a year so make it special, make it memorable, make it your own...

A trio of seasonal concerts in Malton and Pickering in December marks the tenth Christmas to be celebrated by busy Malton District Male Voice choir since it was founded in 2007. The choir, described recently in the Radio Times as “… a bluff and characterful troupe of Yorkshire pensioners”, kicks off the Christmas season with its annual yuletide concert of words and music for all the family on Sunday December 11th at 3pm in St Michael’s Church in Malton. The concert will feature a well-proven and muchloved mixture of popular old and new seasonal songs and sing-along carols spiced with words and solo performances from choir and guests. A week later the choir goes up the road to Pickering on Sunday December 18th to sing another full programme in the Memorial Hall at 2pm as guests of the town’s new Welcome Church. All proceeds from the church’s “Celebrate Christmas” event are being donated to Yorkshire Air Ambulance. The choir helped raise more than €2,000 for that same charity at a concert in Sledmere House earlier this year. The Malton choir’s last appearance of 2016 will be at the town’s Talbot Hotel on Christmas Eve. The hotel has invited it to return for the third year running to sing carols and Christmas songs in the bar for guests and supporters between 6.30 and 7.30pm. The December concerts follow another appearance by the choir - also its third - at the East Coast Festival of Choirs and Voices in Bridlington where it joined other regional choirs at Christ Church in Quay Road on November 5th. That came after a busy year in which the choir, under its conductor Vivien Wilcock, appeared in concert at Sledmere House, in Cropton and in Scunthorpe - where it sang in the Men of Steel spectacular with Lesley Garrett. The Malton group, whose members range in age from 20 to 93, is a friendly, informal group. To join call 01944-758693 or 01653-692362. No singing experience is necessary. 38 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Happy Christmas
FROM MALTON, NORTON & PICKERING CHURCHES
A Christmas message from Revd Rachel Hirst, Rural Dean of Southern Ryedale and vicar of St Peter’s Church, Norton
A
ll I want for Christmas is….
How might you finish that sentence? My two front teeth, you, my family, a nice dinner, the latest video or toy... There are lots of alternatives we could offer depending on our circumstances and age. Christmas carries a huge number of expectations for many people and it can be hard if we struggle to meet them. I spoke recently with a single Mum who was upset she wouldn’t be able to buy her child a Christmas present as money is very tight. Someone else was sad because her son had moved to Australia and she wouldn’t see him this year. We all have hopes, dreams and desires for how we’d like Christmas to be and it doesn’t always work out that way. So what is at the heart of Christmas? What is it really all about? It is about good news. Good news for the poor, rich, homeless, comfortable, estranged, sorted, lonely, happy, depressed and the healthy. The heart of Christmas is the only thing which truly offers something for everyone. It’s about God who loves the world so much that he came to live amongst his people in the form of his Son, Jesus, to show us what he is really like. The Bible describes it poetically as ‘The Word made flesh.’ Many people find that hard to believe, or don’t want to think about it. All that religious stuff is for other people. But imagine for a moment that you were handed a beautifully wrapped present this Christmas and you left it in a corner unopened and
ignored. That is what it’s like when people ignore the heart of Christmas. The message the angels brought to the shepherds - people on the edge of society, poor and misunderstood - was firstly; do not be afraid, then about joy, peace, rescue. Things we can all relate to in different ways. What do you really want for Christmas? If we stop all the busyness we might hear a small voice whispering the deep desire of our hearts. For peace, joy, rescue, not to be afraid. Maybe if you go along to a service in one of our churches this Christmas time you can listen to the story afresh, hear the words of the carols, and find some good news for yourself and for our world.

Christmas
By The Pastoral Poet Now it’s here, the festive season, Children sending endless lists. Do they really need a reason For being the nation’s optimists? The advent calendar awaits, A treat behind each numbered door. Eagerly anticipating The fast approaching twenty four. Mum is shopping at a canter, A record breaking spending spree. Gifts from parents - Gifts from Santa, To put beneath the Christmas tree. Over filling fridge and freezer, Kitchen cupboard doors agape. On the telly ‘Ebenezer,’ ‘Sound of Music,’- ‘Great Escape!’ What a sweetmeat choice awaits, Mince pies, jellies, puddings, chocs. Funny how the ‘Eat Me’ dates Always stay inside the box! On the ceiling, coloured streamers, Holly hangs from every rafter. A tender kiss for little dreamers. Come the morning, joyous laughter, Ah yes! That joyful laughter. Clive Milson

POP A MUG IN YOUR BAG… Plastic cups are a major contributor to nondegradable waste. A few types are recyclable, but are often just dumped anyway. Most people carry a bag of some sort these days, so carrying a lightweight mug wouldn’t be much trouble. If a piece of kitchen towel is kept inside, then it can be wiped out when the drink is finished. Washing up can be done at some other time if necessary.
A Few Facts • UK citizens throw away 3 billion plastic cups each year. Perhaps your favourite coffee shop, workplace, or other organisation, would like to help reduce this. • Starbucks now offer 25p discount if you bring your own mug. • Just wiping the mug out, particularly after drinking tea, isn’t in any way ‘unhygienic’. Tea was used to clean wounds during WW1 as it contains useful anti-bacterials. • Styrofoam cannot be completely recycled. Most of it will still be in landfill 500 years from now. Particulates from Styrofoam often end up in the sea. • The tea or coffee tastes so much better in a proper mug!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley
areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Helmsley Walled Garden nominated for prestigious LandLove Award
T
he town of Helmsley is once more being recognised for its unique appeal with a nomination for the town’s Walled Garden in the third annual LandLove Magazine awards. The awards, which will now be put to a public vote, aim to recognise and celebrate the very best of the British Countryside, across 12 categories. Helmsley Walled Garden will battle it out in the Favourite Garden category against nine other horticultural wonders including English Heritage’s Audley End Gardens, RHS Rosemoor and the National Trust’s Buckland Abbey. The stunning garden originally dates back to 1759 but was lovingly restored in 1994 by local resident Alison Ticehurst, on a mission to revive the Victorian glory it had once enjoyed. Set across five tranquil acres and located beneath the historic Helmsley Castle, the garden holds a special place in the hearts of the community and visitors alike. A dedicated team of staff and volunteers work tirelessly to preserve the gardens, which are run as an independent charity. The Walled Garden also offers social and therapeutic horticulture, funded through the garden’s entry fees, helping to improve mental and physical health through gardening. Those receiving therapy include people with disabilities as well as individuals who are coping with the effects of depression, social isolation and long-term unemployment. Tricia Harris, marketing manager at Helmsley Walled Garden, said: “It’s such an honour to be shortlisted for Britain’s Favourite Garden, it really means so much to us. We know that the competition will be tough, we’re in great company with many of our favourite gardens also being featured in the category. We are the only independent garden to make the shortlist and we have a tenth of the number of the visitors of some
of the big gardens, as we are smaller in scale, so it’s a great achievement to get this far. However, we have high hopes that Helmsley Walled Garden fans will show their support. It really is such a special place and the charitable support it provides for a wide range of people is so very important. We hope the local community will get behind us and vote before January, it would be an amazing way to celebrate the start of a new year!” Voting is now open until the 3rd January 2017. Anyone wishing to vote can do so at www.landlove.com/awards

A STRAY IN A MANGER! Here at Battle Flatts we are once again running our annual Christmas collection for our local animal charities during December. Christmas is one of the busiest times of year for these charities, but unfortunately is also a time when animals tend to be forgotten. The festive season is an exciting time, with plenty of food, presents, not to mention all the decorations! Here are some tips to help keep yours pets out of trouble this festive season. Food Alert! Keep all that extra food well away from pets. Rich foods can lead to upset tummies, but especially be aware of raisins in puddings and cakes as they can be very toxic to the kidneys. Chocolate is another festive favourite, but as little as 50g of plain chocolate can be fatal in small dogs. If your pets get hold of turkey bones, there is the potential for dangerous gut blockages. Also don’t forget about the presents. Dogs with their sensitive noses will be able to tell which gifts are edible and the wrapping won’t do their tummies any good either! Visitor Alert! Christmas is a time for families and our homes are often full of visitors. Many pets revel in this extra attention but some will find it extremely stressful. If your pet is more shy than sociable, make sure they have a safe place they can retreat to.
Winter Walks! When going out walking take care of your dog’s paws. Snow and ice can ball up between the toes, especially on furry paws, and road grit can cause nasty sores if not washed off. Also slim fine-coated breeds like whippets benefit from a coat in cold weather.

AVOIDING WINTER CALAMITIES
Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic
Dastardly decorations! Make sure the Christmas decorations are well out of reach or securely fastened down. Cats especially find the twinkly lights and baubles irresistible which could cause them harm if accidently swallowed or broken. Toxic Plant Alert! When cats are not going out as much they might amuse themselves by chewing house plants. Beware of lilies which are toxic to cats. All parts including the pollen are toxic causing kidney failure. Poinsettias are also toxic. E- Cigarette awareness! These are a new hazard for dogs that chew. The high concentration of nicotine poses a very serious risk.

WE WOULD LIKE TO WISH ALL OUR DOGS, VOLUNTEERS AND SUPPORTERS A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS It has been a busy year for Ryedale Dog Rescue and we have successfully rescued and rehomed lots of unwanted and abandoned dogs into loving new homes. We would like to say a HUGE THANKYOU to everyone who has supported us this year. With Christmas fast approaching we would like to make a plea – please do not buy a puppy as a present this Christmas. Many dogs bought as Christmas presents will find themselves unwanted in the new year and charities like ours will hopefully be able to rescue them, but that’s not always the case. If you want to buy a gift for a dog lover why not sponsor one of our dogs instead?
DOG OF THE MONTH: PATCH
P is for PATCH, P is for PERFECT and perfect describes this 18 month old staffordshire bull terrier. Poor Patch was dumped and found himself in the care of the council pound kennels. No-one at RDR can understand why and when you meet him you will not either.
CHRISTMAS FUNDRAISING EVENTS – Please come along and support us!

RDR – Every penny we raise is spent directly Saturday 3rd December, Hovingham Market on our dogs. Another opportunity to Christmas shop with us! For further information on Ryedale Dog Rescue please visit our website www.ryedaledogrescue.com or you can contact us on 07581 324153 (Please remember we are a charity run entirely by unpaid volunteers, most of whom work full-time, so please be patient and we will return your call as soon as possible. Thank you) 76 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

A quick check of well known websites bring up a plethora of gifts for our furry friends and my goodness, the wonderful things that are available! What discerning dog would not appreciate a personalised treat bag or shetland wool bow-tie? Here are some things that we at Station House Vets think are great; A robust chew toy: We think the KONG products are a great present for dogs of all sizes and ages. You can stuff them with treats, smear dog toothpaste in the grooves, hide them and generally keep them entertained. If you are buying a chew type toy make sure you can dent the product with your finger nail, anything harder can damage your dogs teeth. A puzzle feeder: These are great for all sorts of pets. Maze feeders help slow the speed at which your dog eats food, so can help overweight animals. Interactive puzzle feeders provide great stimulation for cats who would naturally hunt for their food. You may need to train your cat to use them, see foodpuzzlesforcats.com for ideas.

A fishing rod toy: Apart from catnip mice these have been my cats’ favourite toys. You can make your own, anything feathery or dangly that your cat can pounce on (remember to put them away afterwards as cats can get things caught around their tongues). A cardboard box: My children turn the big ones into spaceships, my cat’s favourite bed is a towel lined banana box from the supermarket on top of the boiler (the robust ones also stack to make cat bunkbeds). Small pets like them to shelter under or jump onto! Some peace and quiet: If you have lots of visitors, as well as insisting on bringing a tree (which may be viewed as either a cat activity centre or adorned with potentially edible items) indoors, make sure your pets can retreat to a quiet place should they choose to. Do ring us for advice though, if you are worried about your pet over the holiday period. Lucy Nowell BA Vet Med. MRCVS Station House Vets
