W

elcome to another edition of your handy local magazine!

Have you had a good start to 2017? Ours was busy as always. There’s nothing like a print deadline to focus minds and get us straight back to work after the New Year. Luckily, Nicky’s chirpy disposition always lightens the day! Reflecting on 2016 it is hard not to wonder what effect the huge changes, both in UK and globally, will have in 2017 and beyond. Brexit and the election of Donald Trump will make for an interesting year. In our personal lives and businesses it’s not a bad thing to periodically jolt the status quo. It has to be a good thing that 2016 inspired more people to take an interest, and have a view on, what’s happening locally and around the world. In my own house, my two teenage children, have been gamefully politicising and philosophising all over the Christmas holidays; whilst I’ve tended to stick with the sherry! One of them is now applying to study politics at university next year, a choice of subject we never thought likely a few years ago! As a small business owner I’m more mindful of what might affect my business. I’m just keen for stability in 2017 so that we can continue to grow the business. Such concerns about the economy will be the same for many businesses in the area. Spare a thought for your local independents and use them where possible. Enjoy fresh food and drink from your local shops, use local tradesmen for your home and spend locally on interiors, fashion, gardens, vehicles (and even advertising!) as much as possible. This way we can all ensure the prosperity of our local areas. And with all this political discussion, my aim this month is to steer more tea time conversations towards music or the weather; and to have less sherry! Well done to Eric Baker of Kirkbymoorside for winning our December competition. Until next month…

We already have teams of fantastic volunteers who support the day to day running of the libraries but we’d like to encourage more volunteers from our communities to join us. From April this year, Norton Library will be solely dependent on volunteers to keep the library fully operational. Malton Library will retain a few staff but also requires volunteers to support them. What’s in it for me? • Gain the skills and experience you need for the future • Make new friends and meet people

• Change lives – yours and the people around you • Inspire others and make a difference in your community • It only takes a couple of hours Libraries have changed a lot in recent years and have much more to offer than just the loan of books. They play a huge role in our communities: offering a meeting place for friends; a place for learning; access to Wi-Fi; somewhere to get help and advice; access to computers and the internet; help with creating CVs; photocopying; host to reading groups and somewhere

to help your child’s learning and development. The vision is to create a friendly, inclusive community space for all ages. Murder by gaslight at the Milton Rooms

I

t’s thrills and chills at the Milton Rooms in February when two of the most infamous convicted poisoners in British history are brought back to life on stage and invite the audience to be judge and jury on their deeds. “Murder by Gaslight” relives the macabre cases of diabolical doctors William Palmer and Harvey Crippen, who were both hanged as murderous men of medicine in Victorian and Edwardian England, despite their pleas of innocence. Presented by the aptly named Don’t Go into the Cellar! theatre company, this is good old-fashioned story-telling, aided and abetted by some modernday theatrical effects that are guaranteed to set the pulse racing and bring a shiver to the spine.

been like at the end of the 19th century – not blood and gore, but plenty of jumps! Our shows are always laced with humour, albeit of the gallows kind,” said Jonathan.

Artistic Director Jonathan Goodwin has a lifelong love of Victorian detective, ghost and horror stories. “We aim to bring to modern-day audiences a glimpse of what theatre would have

WE ARE FUNDRAISING FOR A BUS SHELTER!

On those distant summer days, it’s nice to get a bit of shade. The real need is those cold, wet, windy days, when umbrellas break, but the bus journey is still essential to get to work or college, keep that medical appointment, or visit a friend in need. Nearly 1/5 of Ryedale households do not have a car. Because of austerity measures, funding is not currently available through the County Council for bus shelters. Kirkbymoorside Environment Group are working with the relevant authorities, and we are fundraising first for a shelter on the A170. An average of 44 people per day board buses in Kirkbymoorside towards Pickering and Scarborough. Making bus travel more comfortable encourages car drivers to leave their car at home. There is a cumulative effect of lots of “green travel” projects that we and others are working on, leading to less congestion, less pollution, less drink driving and fewer parking problems. Air pollution is a major cause of respiratory problems, so we should do our bit to try to reduce the number of cars on the road. See also Transition Towns national website for why we are trying to use less fossil fuels and acting on global warming If you would like to make a donation, or to help with fundraising please ring Helen on 01751 432447 or email kmegadmin@ phonecoop.coop. If you live in a different town or village that needs a shelter, and want some tips to get started, we’d be happy to share our experience with you.

Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected too.

T

he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours. For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. Your team of installers were first rate and I couldn’t fault them one bit... The end result is exactly what we wanted and

more. The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had

her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with anything less than we’d fitted for her before.” After over 26 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and P.V.C. windows. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can

source just about any kitchen you may have seen and enables them to offer one of the widest choices of styles and designs in Yorkshire. The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a completely stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from start to finish. The process begins with a visit from Instyle’s designer Paul Streicher, who will listen to the customer and add lots of creative ideas to plan a kitchen that fits perfectly with their ideas, personality and home. A CAD (computer-aided design) will be produced, helping the customer visualise the end result. Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions. If money is tight, an Instyle facelift can freshen up a tiredout kitchen for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen for a fraction of the cost. We are completely flexible; even if someone just wants a new

LOVE THEM RIGHT!!!

Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic

With Valentine’s day fast approaching, love is in the air and tis’ the season to love your pets, but are you loving them too much ? Now’s the time to love them right !!! We all love to treat our pets and we’re all guilty of just giving them a little morsel of our food and even extra treats of their own, but unfortunately this could be causing them more harm than good. Overfeeding your pet or even just feeding the wrong foods can lead to them becoming overweight and obese, which can cause serious health problems and even leave them with long term life threatening diseases. Some pets can even be more prone to being overweight depending on breed, age and neuter status, so it may be that they just need a few simple adjustments to their daily routine to combat this.

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE body size in good quality hay. If you are going to change your rabbit’s diet, please do so gradually over 2-4 weeks as rabbits have a very sensitive digestion and need time to adjust to new foods.

RABBITS

With the winter weather well and truly taking hold, many of us are less than keen to be spending as much time outdoors as we would in warmer times. In the winter it is important to consider our small pets that live outdoors - they still need our care, attention and companionship. As the third most popular pet in Britain, rabbits needs are often not thought about after the initial excitement of bringing home that cute little ball of fur. They are often left in a small cage with only their basic needs for survival met. Rabbits are intelligent creatures that need space, exercise, companionship and stimulation. Wild rabbits can cover an area equivilent to 30 football pitches and live in large social groups where they have companionship, groom each other and huddle together for warmth. Domestic rabbits share the same needs. In a hutch, a rabbit should be able to manage at least 3 full hops across their accommodation (usually at least 6’ x 2’ x 2’) and the space should have suitable safe toys and shelter to keep the rabbit amused and stimulated. The hutch should have a dry, draught-free area filled with bedding to keep the rabbit warm and secure. A hutch should not be the rabbit’s only living space, they should also have access to a run of at least 8’ x 6’. Giving your rabbit a healthy, formulated diet that is high in fibre is extremely important. Feeding a nugget type of food is best so they can’t just eat selected bits. Rabbits also need some fresh greens such as kale, spinach or savoy cabbage, but take care as some foods are too ‘rich’ for rabbits so please research before offering new foods. It is very important to give rabbits hay, and lots of it! Rabbits should be fed at least their own

34 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

It is very important that you spend time with your rabbit and, if possible, other rabbits (though you must consider having the rabbits neutered if keeping them together). Seeing rabbits living together with enough room to display their natural behaviours is a joy to watch and knowing that you have given your rabbit(s) everything they need to live a full and contented life is extremely rewarding. If you are considering getting a rabbit or are concerned you are not meeting your rabbit’s needs and would like some advise and guidence please contact us at Station House Vets for a free clinic with one of our Veterinary Nurses. If you are have concerns regarding the health of your rabbit please make an appointment to see a vet. Heart Disease has been linked in several studies to poor Oral Health including Poor Gum Health (Gum Disease). Many people are unaware they have gum disease as it is almost always not a problem or painful until it is advanced. The best way it can be detected and treated is by regular visits to the dentist.

Providing experienced Chiropractic care for you and your family Chiropractic is suitable for all ages and tailored to suit your needs. Lower back pain • Neck pain • Shoulder pain • Headaches • Elbow pain • Hips & knees • Arthritis pain.

If you have noticed any loose teeth or gaps appearing between your teeth as the gums have shrunken back you almost certainly will have Gum Disease. The good news is that we can do much more to help you keep your teeth if it is caught EARLY.

Good homecare can really help to prevent gum disease so invest in a good quality round headed electric brush if you can and concentrate on the inside surfaces of the teeth as much as the outer surfaces you can see.

Ryedale Foot Care

Your dentist can advise you on the best technique for cleaning your teeth as we are all different, the same goes for interdental cleaning, cleaning properly between your teeth is most important its one of the first areas we see bone loss and the reason you get the black spaces between your teeth. So don’t delay speak to your dentist about how you can maximise your gum health and reduce the risk to your heart. For tailored advice please call Jan at Howardian Dental Practice.

SMALL THINGS WHITE AND BEAUTIFUL! do look forward to seeing them at Burton Agnes Hall each year – it is a beautiful and unforgettable sight.”

Visit Burton Agnes Hall this winter to be enchanted by a spectacular display of snowdrops, which blanket the historic woodland walk. Each February, hundreds of thousands of hardy snowdrops push through the cold winter ground to create a magnificent ‘white carpet’ across the woodland floor behind the much-loved Elizabethan stately home. Simon Cunliffe-Lister says: “The joyous bloom of pure white at the end of winter announces to us that spring is on its way, and is a biblical symbol of hope. I really

The courtyard awaits visitors returning from a walk. The café offers delicious, locally roasted Fairtrade coffees and speciality teas, home-baked treats and warming meals created with local and home-grown produce. The Garden Shop and Gift Shop offer the new season’s stock for a perfect gift or treat, and visitors may also like to add to their own collection of snowdrops by choosing a Burton Agnes-propagated plant ready for spring blooming. The Snowdrop Spectacular runs from the 4th February to the 5th March 2017, from 11am to 4pm each day. At the end of the snowdrop opening, Burton Agnes holds its annual Orchid Festival on the weekend of 4th and 5th March. There will be stunning exhibitions in the Hall, and flower sales. Expert advisors will give talks and take questions about how to care for orchids, and there will be slide shows and stalls selling orchid related goods. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 51

SHORT STORY EVERYONE LIES by Jackie Brewster “Put this on, mate.” Craig threw the crumpled tee-shirt at Gary. “We’ve got to get you looking the part for your big date.”

singer,” Gary shrugged. “I suppose I’ll soon find out.”

“It smells like wet dog,” Gary winced. “Why can’t I just wear my normal clothes?”

“Brenda.”

“Because this, my friend, is the shirt you’re wearing in your dating profile picture.” Craig watched as Gary squeezed into the threadbare shirt. “Aren’t you amazed I’ve kept it all these years?” “I can’t move my arms,” Gary said. “Remind me why I have to wear this?”

“Does this lucky lady have a name?” Craig asked. “You’re kidding!” Craig snorted. “How old did she say she was?” “Same age as me, mid-thirties.” “No lasses our age are called Brenda,” Craig sniggered. “I knew it was too good to be true.” “Why would she lie?” Gary asked.

“So the young lady can’t accuse you of using a photo that’s ten years out of date.”

“Everyone lies, that’s what I keep saying. Let’s have a look at her profile pic.” He opened Gary’s laptop. “I bet it’s in black and white.”

“But it is ten years out of date,” Gary complained. “Surely when she sees me she’ll notice that I have less hair and more girth?”

“Give that to me.” Gary wrestled the keyboard back. “Here she is, Brenda Buttons. Gorgeous isn’t she?”

“Yeah, but by then you’ll be on the date,” Craig said, “and it’ll be too late to back out. And besides, everyone lies on these internet dating sites. When are you meeting her?”

Craig stared at the screen and nearly choked.

“In an hour.” Gary tugged at the tee-shirt. “And what’s she like?” “She’s single and pretty,” he grinned. “She’s got lovely eyes and long brown hair.” “Punching well above your weight,” Craig nodded approvingly. “What does she do for a living?” “She did work in a school, but now she’s started a career in entertainment.” “Entertainment?” Craig frowned. “What’s that all about?” “I don’t know, perhaps she’s a 58 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

“She’s pulled a right fast one on you,” he chuckled. “That’s Kate Middleton.”

“She hauled us in front of the Head after you sprayed yourself with ketchup pretending you had a nosebleed.” “Oh yeah,” Gary grinned, “I remember that.” “That was Brenda Buttons.” Craig folded his arms and smirked. “She’s your hot date.” “She can’t be,” Gary said. “She’d be about a hundred now.” “Like I said,” Craig smiled, “everyone lies.” “What if it’s really her?” Gary was horrified. “You can have a cosy cuppa and reminisce about dead flies’ graveyard,” Craig laughed. “It’ll be fine.” “It won’t be.” Gary put his head in his hands. “Aren’t there laws about dating dinner ladies?”

“Who?”

The computer made a gentle ping. Gary read the screen.

“Married to Prince William.” Craig clutched his sides. “Gary, you’re such a berk.”

“She’s just cancelled on me,” he sighed with relief. “Says she’s got to work.”

“Perhaps she just looks like her?” Gary said.

“Looks like you’ve dodged a bullet,” Craig said. “Delete your profile before she tries to reschedule.”

“Mate, not even in your wildest dreams,” Craig laughed. “Wait, Brenda Buttons! You said she used to work in a school. Wasn’t one of our dinner ladies called that?” “I can’t remember.” “Yeah you can. She was a right battle axe.” “Which one?”

Meanwhile, across town, Brenda Buttons, niece and namesake of the formidable former dinner lady, was cutting the ribbon to open a new supermarket, and wondering whether her budding career as a Kate Middleton lookalike was beginning to get in the way of her love life.

GOOD NEWS BY MARY MAHON 2016 saw a lot of negative media, affecting all areas of social, economic and political life. Alongside the plethora of celebrity deaths, many people felt devastated about Britain leaving the European Union and Trump’s election in America. However, I think a large tragedy of 2016 was the focus on tragedy itself: the news rarely reports good news. In the first week of January 2017 alone, there were so many incredible news stories unreported to the main public eye! For example, the Obama administration denied six permits for oil and gas exploitations of the Atlantic Coast - securing the safety of whales, dolphins and many other sea creatures. In the medical world, the Xstat finally obtained approval; a syringe-like device which injects mini expanding sponges into a fatal wound, creating a barrier against blood flow within 20 seconds. This innovative device is monumental in the number of lives it will be able to save, as it can soak up blood for up to four hours! In terms of saving the planet, a Kenyan man came up with an ingenious solution to plastic waste building up on beaches in his city. Aghan combined polythene products (such as plastic bottles) with sand to create cheap, durable fencing, which will help reduce the number of trees being cut down as well. So why do we often focus on the negative, or tend to see the negative side of things more? Biologically, it’s unavoidable. Our brains are more highly attuned to negative news because we have a greater sensitivity towards it; there is a stronger surge in electrical activity towards negative stimuli, and for good reason... Danger! It is believed we have evolved this way to keep us safe - a survival instinct making it unavoidable for us to notice potential danger. However, although negative news is very important to recognise, I believe good news can be just as important. Hearing good news is inspiring, it reveals to us hidden heroes in our world and miraculous breakthroughs, restoring hope and humanity when life seems grim. So when the world is looking bleak, remember there is so much good too.

31st March is Daffodil Day!

Marie Curie’s biggest campaign, The Great Daffodil Appeal, is taking place all throughout March and culminating on 31st March with Daffodil Day.

This year, we want everyone to take part in the appeal, whether that’s volunteering to collect, holding a fundraising event or donating to Marie Curie, with everyone wearing their daffodil on Friday 31st March as an act of solidarity together. There are so many ways to get involved in the appeal, you could hold a ‘Wear Yellow Day’ at work or school, sell some daffodil themed cakes, volunteer to collect at your nearest location, or do some sort of fundraising that fits in with your schedule to raise money for the Marie Curie nursing service. Jennifer Carmichael, Community Fundraiser said: “Last year’s appeal raised £6 million nationally, and we want to make this year’s even bigger and better, with the whole campaign concluding on Daffodil Day. We especially need more people to sign up to collect for an hour or two – it’s so easy, and from just a couple of hours collecting, you could raise enough to pay for a couple of hours of nursing care.” Collections taking place in and around Ryedale are: Kirkbymoorside Street Collection: 1st March Pickering Street Collection: 11th March Morrisons, Malton: 10th, 11th & 12th March Malton Street Collection: 18th March Helmsley Street Collection: 18th March For more information please contact Jennifer Carmichael on 01904 755260 or email Jennifer.carmichael@mariecurie.org.uk 64 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley

areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

The recently increased renewable heat incentive, or RHI, for Heat Pumps and Biomass boilers, means that these renewable energy heating systems are rapidly becoming the best option for heating many homes and businesses. The RHI runs for seven years after installation and rewards customers with a quarterly

payment directly into their bank accounts. Debbie Bryant of Peak Power Systems said: “It’s never been easier to consider changing to a renewable heating system.

by Adrian Green, Malton Baptist Church and Churches Together in Southern Ryedale. February 14th is Saint Valentine’s Day. Before that, the Post Office will be getting busy delivering cards. The flower shops will sell a few more flowers. Maybe those of us who have partners, spouses or sweethearts will be a bit better behaved to our better halves! We are encouraged to express our care and love for them in tangible ways. But how did this all come about? We have to go back to the third century AD, when the Roman Empire was at its height. The Emperor was concerned that the young men he wanted as soldiers were losing their concentration on the job of soldiering in favour of their quite natural affection for those of the fairer sex. So he published an edict preventing young people from marrying. At that time, despite the norm of promiscuousness, the growing Christian church was concerned to promote monogamy. So St. Valentine, a Christian priest, took to marrying couples secretly. Eventually he was caught, tried and sentenced to death. Before he died, he wrote to a young lady whom he had healed of blindness, so the story goes, and finished the letter “from your Valentine”. So what do we learn from this ancient saint? He stood up for his faith, and it cost him dearly. Many Christians today are being persecuted for their faith – in fact more than at any time in the history of the Christian Church. Maybe we too may have to face hardship or persecution. Will we stand for what we believe in? (as well as treating our better halves with the love and care they deserve all the year round!) 68 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE

VELVET UNDERGROUND by Pippa Greenwood They may be known as ‘velvet coated gentlemen’, but if you have a problem with moles in your garden, it is highly unlikely you will call them anything so polite! So what can you do if your lawn becomes decorated with mounds of finely turned soil? Moles can do a lot of damage to a lawn, largely because that fine soil acts as an excellent seedbed for weeds. Mole runs beneath your lawn, flowerbeds or veg plots can occasionally cause the plants to suffer from drought, as the soil is no longer in contact with the roots and plants can literally fall over. Moles can sometimes be deterred by high-pitched sounds or

vibrations. Try inserting children’s windmills over the mole infested areas, as the vibration that passes down these into the soil is said to send moles scampering away. Similarly, you can plunge glass bottles into the soil with the neck protruding which causes noise and vibrations as the wind whistles over the mouth of the bottles. Very smelly substances, such as mole smokes, can work. These are like fireworks and, inserted into the run, produce unpleasant smoke. However, with these and other smelly deterrents, once the smell has subsided the mole may return. Traps are available from some garden centres or online stores.

They must be correctly set and you must wear gloves as the moles will avoid the trap if they detect human scent. It is much more effective to employ a specialist mole catcher who is adept at trapping them and, since they often charge only on the basis of moles caught, it need not be too expensive a process either. Moles do eventually decide to go elsewhere, and although this does not imply that your garden will then remain free of moles, if the problem has been very bad one year it may not be quite so severe the next. Some say that the plant caper spurge (Euphorbia lathyrus)

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE will deter moles and as it does seem to work for some gardeners and the plants are fairly attractive it is worth giving it a try! Some gardeners report success with ultrasonic devices that can be inserted into the ground. If all else fails, and attempting to look at this problem in a positive light, bear in mind that incredibly finely turned soil can be useful and many gardeners I know, including the wonderful ‘grandfather of gardening’ Geoffrey Smith, used the soil as a medium in which to grow an excellent crop of seedlings! JORVIK Viking Festival 2017 Europe’s largest Viking Festival. 20th – 26th February

T

he story of Eric Bloodaxe’s last days in York will be woven into this year’s JORVIK Viking Festival, which takes place in York from 20 – 26 February 2016 – with new venues for even larger events including his ultimate feast and a dramatic retelling of the Battle of Stainmore, which can have only one conclusion for the infamous Viking king. “For the last three years, the JORVIK Viking Festival has grown and now draws even larger audiences from across the world, so with JORVIK Viking Centre’s re-opening set for April, we want to make sure that this year’s event is an epic prequel to the story we will tell in the re-imagined JORVIK,” comments marketing manager, Paul Whiting.” The epic finale of the Festival (Saturday 25 February) will tell the story of the Battle of Stainmore – where Eric Bloodaxe unsuccessfully made his last stand – and will be hosted for the first time at Rawcliffe Country Park, where a natural arena will enable larger crowds to enjoy the furious fiery finale, which will combine living history displays with hundreds of warriors taking to the field of combat to determine the fate of the Kingdom of JORVIK Tickets cost £13.50 for adults and £10.50 for concessions, with family tickets (two adults and two children) for £40.50 or £52.50 for two adults and three children. Alongside the paid-for events, there will be a host of free activities for visitors to enjoy, including the annual Strongest Viking Competition, which returns home to the Coppergate Centre, the March to Coppergate from Dean’s Park, and the Best Beard Competition (all Saturday 25 February). For those visiting York during the half-term week, there will be a free encampment (Mon – Sat) in Coppergate and the Festival Hub will be located in Parliament Street.

Other highlight activities in this year’s festival include: • Have-a-go archery and sword combat in St Sampson’s Square (Monday to Thursday from 10am to 4pm) • Norse Nalebinding workshops, led by one of the world’s top Viking knitting experts, Mari Wickerts of Gothenburg Museum. • Lectures and workshops with author Justin Hill (23 February from 10am to 1pm) • 1066! The End of History, a new presentation by Peter Carrington-Porter at St Helen’s Church. Explore dramatic storytelling of one of the most mysterious periods of this country’s history!

The garden of DIG in St Saviourgate will play host to this year’s Viking Steading, with a wide range of domesticated animals to see and pet – a welcome return of animals to the city centre where they would have lived alongside their owners 1000 years ago!

Alongside the dramatic events of the Festival, those wanting to further explore the latest Viking research can meet the archaeological experts from York Archaeological Trust, and enjoy lectures from eminent speakers.

A full calendar of events in this year’s festival is available online at www.jorvikvikingfestival.co.uk where tickets for key events can also be booked. More details can also be found on social media by using #JVF17. 74 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
