elcome to our July edition.
This month we’ve packed the magazine full of things to keep you entertained from agricultural shows to jazz festivals and duck races. Make sure you have a look through our vast listings and adverts to find an amazing local event perfect for you. We are now into our fourteenth year of publishing the Handy Mag. The news is often full of the demise of newspapers and print in general and the subsequent rise of digital news, advertising and, well, everything. Here at the Handy Mag, whilst we do have a website and have been known to partake in a little social media marketing, we still believe that there is nothing like printed publications to reach our readership! I was reading a newspaper article recently that said that printed publications still out-perform digital in terms of trust and reliability. How can you really know whether an article on social media is ‘fake news’ - to coin a well-known American President’s saying! At the Handy Mag, what happens in our local area is important to us because we are local, and we take our readers’ and advertisers’ trust in us very seriously. We work very hard to ensure that every edition is filled to the brim with interesting information about both our businesses and the local community. Whilst being in business inevitably has it’s challenges, the Handy Mags continue to be well read and used in the area. So a big thank you to all of our readers and advertisers for supporting us over the years. Nominations are now open for the Pride of Malton and Norton Awards. This year, as Mandy, who organises the event, now works at the Handy Mag, we know how much work goes into the celebration. If you know someone who has done amazing things locally, or a business that particularly contributes to the local community, make sure you fill in a

Short Story Dolphin Watching
“It’s a tricky walk down.” Sheila grabbed a clump of seagrass to steady herself. “I feel like a mountain goat.” She had picked up a leaflet for a dolphin-watching boat trip that set off from the harbour, but Royce had turned his nose up. “If we sit on a beach that boat will sail past,” he’d said, parking on the coastal road’s narrow verge. “Whatever they see on the boat, we can see from the shore.” “You’re such a cheap-skate, Royce,” Sheila had snapped crossly. “We’re on holiday for goodness sake!” “I’m not being cheap,” Royce had replied sulkily. “I just thought you’d enjoy it more on a beach.”
“Incredible,” Royce agreed, peering through his binoculars. Sheila looked around. There were families building sandcastles, some eating ice lollies, some leaning over rock pools with crab lines. “Where’s everyone getting their lollies from?”
“I’m sorry.” Sheila backed down when she saw she’d offended him. “It’s a lovely idea.”
“Must have brought them with them,” Royce said, feigning interest in a seagull.
“Quite right,” Royce had shrugged, “I’m just trying to give you a nice holiday.”
A girl walked by licking a cornet.
With the air not completely cleared between them, Sheila had avoided the slightest complaint while stumbling behind Royce down the two miles of nettle-lined track to the beach. She never said a word when she got a splinter in her bottom from a six-bar gate, and cheerfully skidded on lose shale down the sheer cliff face. After an hour of scraped knees and nettle stings they finally stood on the shoreline. The waves shimmered in the hot sun, and the sand of the little cove was the colour of clotted cream. It was also covered in beach towels.
“Excuse me!” Sheila called, “Where did you get that from?” “The ice cream van in the car park” the girl said. “What car park?” The girl looked at Sheila as though she’d landed from Mars. “Up there,” she pointed, “it’s a two minute walk.” “Why did we park miles away, Royce?” Sheila turned to her husband. “There’s a car park.” “Look, here comes the dolphin-spotting boat.” Royce said, pretending not to hear.
“I’m amazed it’s so popular,” Sheila observed. “It’s so dicey to get to.”
“How much does the car park cost?” Sheila asked.
“Everyone’s had the same idea,” said Royce. “No point wasting money on pointless boat trips.”
“How much?” Sheila insisted.
They found a rock to perch upon, where they could see the sea over rows of colourful windbreaks.
“It’s quite dear,” Royce said. “Three pounds,” Royce mumbled.
“I can’t believe all these families have made it down here,” Sheila marvelled, “and there are no facilities for miles.”
“Well, you know what you can do?” Sheila said. “You can go back up the cliff and bring the car round.” She took the binoculars out of his hand. “And then get me an ice-cream. I’ll let you know if I see any dolphins.”
“Yes, it’s very secluded,” Royce said.
By Jackie Brewster
“Look, they’ve got a double buggy down here.” Sheila was staggered. “And those teenagers have brought body boards.”

It's Show Season!
gricultural shows have long been at the heart of our communities and soaking up the atmosphere at a traditional local show is an important part of the summer event diary, and a treat not to be missed. Many local shows have been running for well over a century. Danby is on its 158th, Ryedale is on its 152nd, Malton Show its 132nd, and Egton its 129th! If you haven’t visited an agricultural show recently, most shows are now run with both farming communities and townspeople in mind with something for everyone of all ages. There are always the livestock classes but often show jumping and heavy horses, tractors and machinery, home produce, music, vintage cars, entertainment and much more. And you really don’t have to be a farmer to enjoy the finer points of pedigree cattle, fat lambs or chickens! There is always plenty of local food and drink to try and it’s a great chance to meet up with friends old and new. For the stalwarts among us, have a great time and let’s hope the weather holds! For the newbies, why not give your local show a try this summer.

Sun, sea and sandals: Holiday fashion through the ages
A
s the summer holidays approach why not visit the Beck Isle Museum in Pickering and take a look at the exhibition of holiday fashion through the ages. A number of items from the costume collection are displayed to reflect fashions worn at popular seaside destinations for swimming and sunbathing. One of the most interesting items in the display is a bathing costume purchased from Greensmith and Thackwray Ltd (Scarborough) in August 1934 by Captain C. Davies. This navy Jantzen swimsuit is made from ribbed jersey. Jantzen were an American company founded in 1916. They became leaders in swimwear, recognisable worldwide by their famous logo, the ‘Red Diving Girl’. Jantzen revolutionized
swimwear by using stretchy ribbed jersey rather than wool, which was more comfortable and made it easier to swim. Captain Davis purchased the item for ‘peaceful bathing at Scarborough’ but with the outbreak of the Second World War and other overseas tours it went all around the world with him. A selection of postcards from the collection are also on display along with photographs of the annual Pickering Sunday School trip to Scarborough from the early twentieth century. Also taking place over the summer holidays from 21 July to 2 September are drop in family activities at the museum. Get hands on with a range of creative activities, with a changing theme each fortnight; from birds and bugs, to fun at the fairground. For more information please visit www. beckislemuseum.org.uk or call 01751 473653. Sun, sea and sandals: Holiday fashion through the ages runs until the 24 November.

OUT & ABOUT THIS SUMMER
Journey in Malton with Ryedale Book Festival A special Journey for Freedom dinner takes place at the Old Lodge Hotel, Malton, on the Friday evening with guest speakers Christina Lamb and Emma Jane Kirby, authors of ‘The Girl from Aleppo’ and ‘The Optician of Lampedusa’ whose books have been described as putting “a human face on the refugee crisis”. Proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Refugee Council charity that is working in North Yorkshire.
Ryedale Book Festival invites guests to join them on their inaugural Journey Fest Weekend this summer. The Festival, which holds literary events throughout the year in the Ryedale district of Yorkshire, is trying something different this year - its first journey-themed weekend, Friday 29th June to Sunday 1st July 2018 (inclusive), which is sponsored by local tour operator Inntravel. Exploring the concept of a journey from almost every conceivable angle, the varied programme includes events ranging from self-help to outdoor adventure, and from the historical conquests of the Vikings to the marvels of albatross migration. Sarah Tyson, Festival Director, said: “The event will include appearances from some the best travel and nature writers as well as fiction favourites, history, a craft workshop and traditional storytelling. It is a compact programme with a stellar line-up of artists, combined with the opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy a walk in Ryedale and Malton’s agricultural show.” The weekend begins on the morning of Friday 29th June with former airhostess Toni Mackenzie, who penned the bestselling self-help title, ‘Your Flight to Happiness’ following a life-changing experience when she crash-landed. Followed in the afternoon with a paper craft workshop led by York artist Lu Mason who will be helping people to design and make a mobile from re-cycled maps and atlases.
On Saturday 30th June, the whole family can join in the free Town Treasure Trail at participating shops in Malton’s town centre, while Malton Library will be holding a free interactive children’s event based on Oliver Jeffers’ title “Lost and Found”. Young fans of David Attenborough will enjoy Mike Unwin’s Incredible Animal Journeys based on the research for his new title, ‘Migration’.
In the afternoon, have a Q&A session with blogger Sian Anna Lewis, author of ‘The Girl Outdoors’, a modern adventure guide aimed at solo travellers that includes tips on how to prepare for your own journey. Then be inspired by Raynor Winn’s description of what she discovered during her redemptive walk along the South West Coastal Path, featured in her book ‘The Salt Path’. Meanwhile, budding writers can learn from bestselling fiction writer Rachel Hore about the art of creating such a convincing sense of place for her readers and sit back and enjoy some tall tales from storyteller Ian Douglas. Sunday 1st July will appeal to ramblers of all abilities as Andrew White, presenter of the television series ‘Walks Around Britain’, will lead a guided walk to Scampston Park (around 6 miles), ending with a visit to Malton Show. Sarah concludes: “Summertime is wonderful time of year to celebrate journeys of every kind and we look forward to meeting new friends in Malton this summer.” Tickets from www.ryedalebookfestival.com

Making Musical Memories By Ruth Hannah, Musical Memories
I’ve often been asked how the idea for Musical Memories came about. Every evening my Dad would sit down, open up a song album and tinkle away at the piano – I think he found it calming after a hard day at work. I would peer over his shoulder to read the words and try to singalong and at the weekend we would go to the local music shop together to find a new piece of sheet-music for us to play. This meant that as a child I learned a lot of my parents’ favourite songs and I loved them! I had no idea back then that the huge collection of show tunes, standards, traditional, pop and folk songs that Dad and I sang together would give everyone so much pleasure 50 years later – but they do! Today my husband Neil and I play the piano and guitar together and lead the singing at our Musical Memories sessions all over Ryedale. No one has to peer over our shoulders to read the lyrics as there are plenty of songbooks for everyone. We’ve added some great recent tunes to Dad’s collection and now have a huge repertoire of well known songs for everyone to enjoy and we often give our sessions a theme: during the recent lovely weather we had a ‘Seaside Special’.
Everybody is given a name badge, as this helps us all to get to know each other and our fantastic volunteers help make people feel at home by making refreshments - no session would be complete without a cuppa and a chocolate biscuit or occasional slice of cake! There’s no need to ‘book a place’ and everyone is welcome to join us if they come once a week, once a month or only once a year. We love to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries and every summer we hold a Big Sing and Afternoon Tea, inviting everyone who has sung with us throughout the year to get together in The Milton Rooms Malton and raise the roof! Singing together is really uplifting, but the songs also seem to set us off chatting, laughing and sharing stories so if there’s a hubbub in the room then we know that things are going well. People tell us that these sessions really make them feel good and we’ve seen lots of new friendships form and some old ones rekindled. So if you like singing in the shower, chatting and eating cake then come and sing from my Dad’s song collection and join us at Musical Memories. Everyone is very welcome! Musical Memories relies on Grant Funding in order to deliver these sessions. If you would like to support Musical Memories in this then any contribution would be extremely welcome. Helmsley Firefighter steps up to the challenge to help his 'brothers' in New York
A
Helmsley firefighter is taking on a challenge which will see him climbing 80 flights of stairs in full firefighting kit, in the heat of a New York summer, to raise money for charity. Chris Lazenby leads a double life - owning a photography and picture framing business in Helmsley’s Walled Garden craft units, but also working as a retained firefighter for the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. This role led him to visit New York to meet fellow firefighters affected by the fallout of 9/11, which has inspired his fundraising. On 1st July Chris will be one of more than 400 first responders taking part in the 4th Annual New York City Memorial Stair Climb - ascending the 80 floors of 3 World Trade Center. Each climber will be honouring one of the 23 NYPD, 37 PAPD and 343 FDNY killed on September 11th 2001. The climb will be done in full fire kit, including breathing apparatus. Sponsorship money raised will go to the The Ray Pfeifer Foundation, which assists injured and sick firefighters and police officers impacted by the events of 9/11, with medical needs not covered by insurance. To help raise additional funds, and to offer a practice run, Chris will also be climbing Mount Snowdon on the 19th May, in full fire fighting gear. There will also be a charity car wash with the crew and fire engine from Helmsley outside the town’s Black Swan Hotel on Sunday the 3rd June.
Chris Lazenby commented: “The effects of 9/11 were felt worldwide. I went to New York in 2016 and met with a fire fighter over there. He gave me a tour of the station and showed me the memorial they have in the fire house and I also visited the 9/11 memorial and museum which really brought home the impact it had made on the city and the world. From that moment I knew I wanted to do something to help. We’re a brotherhood, when one of us fall, we all feel it. Despite coming from different continents it was clear we shared the same values. “Hopefully I can raise some much-needed funds for this important charity. Thank you so much to anyone who sponsors me, every penny helps. Thank you also to the St Albans Sports Centre at Ampleforth who have been letting me use their fitness suite and, more importantly, their stair master, to train on!” Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so via https://climb.memorialstairclimb.com/ fundraiser/1343191

Books Holiday Reads
Sun-lounger worthy reads to keep you occupied this summer. SALVAGE THE BONES - JESMYN WARD
With so many new releases each year, it’s all too easy for books to get buried in the sands of time. Salvage the Bones deserves to be unburied. 15-year-old Esch lives with her three brothers, her alcoholic father and the memory of her mother in a crumbling shack in Mississippi. Hurricane Katrina is on the way and the family is woefully unprepared. If you’re a fan of Alice Walker or Harper Lee, and love getting lost in a devastatingly beautiful read, this one is for you.
THE LOST FLOWERS OF ALICE HART - HOLLY RINGLAND
Alice spends her days hiding from her father and helping her bruised, fragile mother tend to the garden. She’s kept away from school, family and the local village. But then one day tragedy strikes and Alice’s world starts to open up. Can she put her demons aside, or is she destined to repeat her parents’ mistakes? A perfect summer read, although you may find it a struggle to tear yourself away.
HOW I LOSE YOU - KATE MCNAUGHTON
How I Lose You is a love story, told backwards. Eva’s husband Adam dies in chapter one. As Eva struggles to come to terms with her loss, we learn about their story in a series of flashbacks. Back in the present day, Eva stumbles across an email in Adam’s inbox that suggests he was hiding something. In her search to uncover his secret, Eva discovers shocking truths about herself.
WISHES UNDER THE WILLOW TREE - PHAEDRA PATRICK
Benedict Stone is a jeweller in a quiet country village, as was his father before him. Benedict’s marriage is going through a rocky patch, so the last thing he needs is a teenage niece he’s never met
turning up on his doorstep. Together, the unlikely duo work to win Benedict’s wife back. Wishes Under the Willow Tree is an enjoyable, easy read, and as added bonus, you’ll learn a little about gem stones along the way.
THE FAMILY NEXT DOOR - SALLY HEPWORTH
Pleasant Court is a nice neighbourhood, full of respectable families. People don’t talk about their problems. So when Isabelle Heatherington, single and attractive, moves in, she ruffles more than a few feathers. The secrets people have tried so hard to bury start coming out, as Isabelle seems to know rather a lot about her new neighbours. An enjoyable domestic drama, with a few twists and turns to keep you sitting by the pool until the sun goes down.
I STILL DREAM - JAMES SMYTHE
It’s 1997. In between making mix-tapes and arguing with her mum, Laura Bow finds time to create a computer programme. She calls it Organon. At first, Organon is just something to tell her thoughts and feelings to – an online journal that talks back. But as the years pass, it becomes clear that Laura has created an AI with more potential than she could ever have imagined. A gripping read.

J
oanne and Graham Fairclough are very pleased to announce that they are the new owners of Wath Court Fabrics, based in Hovingham. Joanne says “We already have a thriving upholstery business, Jody Gray Upholstery, also based at Wath Court, so it was an easy decision to take on the fabric business as well. We’re looking forward to meeting customers old and new in the coming months.” “We would like to wish previous owner, Paula Battersby, all the best in her retirement. It is great to come into such a well-loved, respected business. We hope we can carry on her hard work and it will be business as usual with lots of new fabrics coming through the doors and exciting projects ahead.” If you haven’t visited Wath Court Fabrics before, it is an Aladdin’s cave of curtain fabrics, upholstery fabrics and curtain accessories. With high quality curtaining in many designs from traditional chintz to contemporary styling, there is something for everyone. All fabrics are on the roll, rather than smaller samples, so it is easy to see exactly how the pattern works and fabrics are available to take home straight away.

Planning a building project? Richard Webster, owner of Prospect Design, answers your questions... required) and then building regulations approval. We’ll act as your agent to oversee both processes.
What's the difference between planning and building regulations?
I'm planning a building project where do I start?
A lot of potential clients ring us unsure of how to start the process. We’re always happy to talk to clients about projects and give informal advice over the phone. The next stage is to arrange a free, no obligation, initial consultation allowing us to have a chat about the project, discuss options, highlight any issues and get a real feel for what it is you are looking for. We can then provide a fixed price quotation for the works.
How do I know if you're the right company to help with my project? The consultation not only allows us to get a feel for the project you are planning but is an opportunity for you to ask us any questions which we are always happy to answer.
Will my project need planning approval?
Not all projects require planning approval. Depending on size and other constraints many extensions, loft conversions and indeed barn conversions fall under PD (Permitted Development) meaning that a formal planning application will not be required.
What are the key stages of the Project?
The most successful projects start with a good design brief that establishes what the project hopes to achieve. This is different for every client. Draft sketches then show how your goals will be accomplished, bearing in mind there may be different ways to achieve what you are looking for. The first regulatory hurdle is planning (if
In simple terms Planning is; can I? Building Regulations is; how will I? By submitting a planning application you’re seeking permission from the local planning authority to allow your project to go ahead. Building Regulations relate to how the build is physically constructed and set standards for structural integrity, energy efficiency etc.
We've got our approvals what next?
It’s time to put your project out to tender. The most common issues can arise when a builder is asked for a quotation too soon. Detailed drawings are a great starting point but if these are backed up by a Schedule of Works detailing exactly what you require, quotations will be more accurate. I would always recommend getting at least three quotations from different builders before deciding on one.
How quickly can we get started?

Malton in Bloom Summer Update by Antony Croser
The hard work of volunteers carried out in 2017 and over the winter months is paying off with stunning displays at the Malton town entrance signs, Water Lane car park, and at the railway station forecourt. The raised bed in Newbiggin has been transformed for summer by Malton WI following on from their work in 2017. Derwent Diggers have met with a team from Transpennine Express to kick start summer planting in and around the railway station. Further work is also to be carried out at St Leonard’s gardens (Old Maltongate) to build on last year’s efforts to transform this area MiB - Derwent Diggers and Transpennine Express at the railway station.

M
alton in Bloom (MIB) 2018 is now in full swing and over the coming months the streetscape of both Malton and Norton-on-Derwent is going to benefit from a riot of colour and fragrance - adding to the attractiveness and wellbeing of the towns for the benefit of residents and visitors alike. Friday 1st June saw the installation of hanging baskets, barrier displays and three tiered displays. Many are in and around Malton market place where the raised beds and barrel displays have been planted out by Malton Town Council groundsmen. Barrier displays have been placed in other prominent sites, including Castle Howard Road/York Road junction, Horsemarket Road, and the two bridges linking Malton and Norton-on-Derwent.
Away from Malton town centre much work has been carried at Orchard Fields to create natural planting areas at the entrance to Castle Gardens, at the bus station, and at the riverside picnic area in Norton. There has been lots of community engagement so far, much to the credit of Malton and Norton residents. In addition to this ‘official’ work, guerrilla gardeners have been at work removing weeds from the streets of the towns and digging over neglected areas. MIB raised its profile, and funds, by selling herbs and vegetables, grown by volunteers, at the recent Malton Food Lovers Festival. Ahead of the Festival weekend Malton and Norton Tidy Group litter picked and swept prominent building/wall frontages, alleys and kerbsides in and around Malton town centre.
Volunteers at the riverside picnic area.
MIB is interested in hearing from individuals, community groups and clubs that would like to be involved. Details can be found at www.maltoninbloom.co.uk.

Shoes By Rector Jo Fifteen years ago this July I bought a pair of black shoes – and I’ve been wearing them ever since!! Value for money or what? Don’t get me wrong, I don’t wear them continually – that really would be too much – but just to church services. However, when you add that up that’s every Sunday (52 – 6 for holidays) x 15 = 690 plus weddings, approx. 150 = 840 plus funerals, approx. 250 = 1090 plus Baptisms on a Saturday, approx. 50 = 1140 plus occasional other services and activities such as Wedding Anniversary blessings, say 60 = 1200. How much did they cost? Can’t quite recall but from M&S (there are other outlets available) so perhaps £50?
TOP TIPS FROM A DENTAL PROFESSIONAL
Joined up thinking!
H
aving recently attended a National Dental Conference it was reassuring to see that dentists are now being encouraged to see their patients as a whole person and not ‘ just a set of teeth’. by Christine Parker BDS (GDC 72136)
Many of you may have heard of the links between the mouth and heart disease but other significant health conditions such as diabetes and dementia are now being linked to the presence of oral bacterial and the effect it can have in the bloodstream.
Here at Howardian Dental we are passionate about assessing your oral health and providing advice on how to reduce the effect of dental disease on you as a whole. Dentists have always had an interest in what you eat from a diet/tooth decay viewpoint but we’re now also looking at how small changes might have a big impact on your overall health.
A few months ago I noticed that the stitching at the heels was coming apart and the liner was starting to peek out.
Surely not at the dentist I hear you say! Well the more we healthcare professionals work together to help our patients the better the outcomes. So come and see what we can do for you. Our oral health educator has recently passed her Nutrition course and has a very sensible and down to earth approach to providing advice tailored to you.
Now perhaps you’re thinking, ‘Just buy a new pair!’ but the thing is that I retire in another couple of months so I’m thinking that if I take care with them they’ll just see me through and then I can settle down to a slower life.
Our current patients really appreciate what we’ve done for them especially as its resulting in less treatment when they return for their check ups. So much so that we now have space for some new patients.
But life isn’t about just getting through – its about living it to the full. At least that’s what Jesus said, ‘I have come that you may have life, and have it abundantly.’ Or in the words of the Message translation, ‘I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.’
Call Jan or email us to book an appointment and discuss your options.
As I say – definitively value for money!
So shoe shops here I come and retirement here I come too. Whatever stage you’re at I hope you will live it abundantly and better than you ever expected also. Blessings, Rector Jo (Rector of the Benefice of Thornton Dale with Allerston, Ebberston, Ellerburn and Wilton)

Resolving Conflict By Jeff Bentley at TLC Counselling There is strong evidence that feeling close to and being valued by other people is a fundamental human need and one that helps us to function well in the world. There are times though when some social interactions fall short of making us feel close and supported in fact they make us feel exactly the opposite. This is particularly present when we find ourselves in conflict with someone. Conflict is described as an intrinsic and inevitable part of our lives and is often associated with feelings of frustration and anger. It is how we deal with conflict which determines the effects we experience both during and after the conflict. I remember a time when I experienced conflict with someone. Our contact became increasingly difficult and I recall feeling anger and frustration. Eventually our contact became so uncomfortable that I broke total contact and our friendship was lost. I was left with feelings of sadness, disappointment and some anger. Although contact had ceased my sense of wellbeing had reduced. I now believe there were actions I could have considered taking which may have resolved our conflict and improved the sense of wellbeing for both of us. The following are the actions I could have taken to help resolve our conflict: • Acknowledged the conflict was about me. • I realised that I had needs that were not being met. These included recognition for my efforts, being appreciated and feeling encouraged. My pride was dented, and I felt angry that these needs were not being met. • Taken the initiative. • Before the hurt began to accumulate and fester I could have been the one to suggest that we met to discuss my experiences and feelings. • Acknowledged the other person’s feelings. • I would have needed to be prepared to try and understand the other person’s feelings. Also, to try and demonstrate my understanding even if I had not agreed. • Confessed my part in the conflict. • I would have needed to be prepared to admit my own mistakes, behaviours and attitudes. • Avoided being focused on who is to blame. • The focus would have needed to be on the problem not the other person. • Cooperated by adjusting to the needs of the other person.
• I would have needed to reduce my selfcenteredness and focus on the needs of the other person. • Accepted that it is unrealistic to expect everyone to agree about everything. • Accepted that it is possible to disagree without being disagreeable. I’m pleased to say that since I broke contact with the person concerned I have made use of the above and find that I am now able to have contact whilst acknowledging that we will not always see eye-to-eye.

General Architectural Kirkbymoorside Environment Group Drawing Services
The first Kirkbymoorside Shopping Guide came out in 2008, and has been updated and reprinted every alternate year since. It gives details of all the shops in our wonderful high-street, together with information about what they stock. In recent editions we have also listed the contact numbers for all the various organisations in the town – there are about 150 of them. They range from baby and toddler groups to the History Group, Camera Club, Bowls Club, Allotments – you name it, and your interest is probably well covered. The idea behind the Guide is to encourage people to make full use of their local shops. In this way we keep our high-street alive, and most of the money spent remains in the community. This is so much better than putting cash into the pockets of remote corporations. If you would like a copy please look in at the Kirkbymoorside Post Office, or the Summit Bakery. Copies of the current edition are nearly all gone, but a new one will appear later in the summer. 10 Electric Vehicle Myths Busted. By James Baggot carefully seal all of the electrified components to make sure there aren’t any problems using car washes, or driving or charging in the rain.
5. You can’t go very far
Most electric vehicles now have a range in excess of 150 miles, with 200 miles becoming the norm – and the average journey is less than nine miles.
6. There’s nowhere to charge them Confusion surrounds the running and operation of an electric car. Here, we try to clear that up.
1. You can’t boil the kettle while charging an electric car
A National Grid report warned that home networks might struggle to cope with high-capacity car charging. However, EV owners with a low-capacity home network wouldn’t have a high-capacity charger, so there’s little chance of the network being overloaded.
2. EVs are more expensive than petrol and diesel cars
Generally, the base price of an EV will be slightly more expensive, but manufacturers compensate by offering a generous specification so that with the government’s £4,500 zero-emission vehicle grant taken into account, they’re a pretty good deal, plus have low running costs. What’s more, as EV technology becomes more prevalent, costs will reduce – the new Nissan Leaf starts at £1,500 less than the old one.
3. They’re more likely to catch fire in a crash
Concerns about crash safety are largely driven by a couple of high-profile Tesla Model S fires in 2013. The EV maker upgraded its underbody battery pack protection in 2014 but also noted that the odds of fires in its cars were “five times lower than those of an average gasoline car”.
4. You can’t drive them in car washes or when it’s raining Water and electricity don’t mix, so manufacturers
Long trips require a bit more planning, but charge point locator Zap Map indicates there are almost 15,000 connectors at more than 5,000 locations in the UK, with more added all the time. Plus, rapid chargers can provide 80 per cent of charge in about 30 minutes.
7. The batteries don’t last very long
Batteries do have a finite life but most manufacturers offer battery leasing for a monthly fee and will replace it for free when needed. Others offer replacement warranties, with five- to eightyear cover the norm.
8. EVs are less environmentally friendly across their life cycle
The energy required to build an electric car can make it less environmentally friendly to produce than a traditionally fuelled car. However, a Norwegian study quoted by the BBC estimates an EV is about 10 per cent better over its life cycle, and that will continue to improve.
9. Battery disposal poses a huge environmental issue
It does, but the EV boom has encouraged lateral thinking to improve recycling rates, with companies taking used EV batteries for use elsewhere, such as home energy storage.
10. They’re boring to drive
Modern electric cars can be genuinely fun to drive, particularly thanks to the high-torque motors, which make acceleration brisk. Tesla takes this to extremes with its Model S, which reaches 60mph in less than three seconds – comparable to the new McLaren Senna supercar, with its petrol-powered twin-turbo V8.

Air conditioning is also very useful to turn on in winter time to quickly clear the condensation from the inside of your windscreen.

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,
Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers
lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or
small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

THE ARTS SOCIETY HELMSLEY
Monday 2 July ‘Zaha Hadid’ by Lecturer: Colin Davies. Colin Davies is a professor of Architectural Theory and former editor or Architects Journal. Dame Zaha Hadid died in 2016, aged 65. Architectural historians of the future will most likely recognise her as one of the most important architects of the ear-ly 21st Century. She was born in Iraq and her reputation was global, but she made her home in Britain. This lecture tells the story of her career from the visionary projects of the 1980’s, throughout the years of frustration when her designs were considered unbuildable, to the prolific crop of successful projects built all over the world in the last decade of her life. 7.15pm in Helmsley Arts Centre auditorium. Save Our Swifts
Photo © Heidi Saxby
‘They’ve made it again, Which means the globe’s still working, the Creation’s Still waking refreshed, our summer’s still all to come -’ Ted Hughes’ poem ‘Swifts’ epitomises this migratory bird, but their numbers have dropped by over 50% since he wrote it. This is partly because swifts arriving in the UK from Africa can’t find nest sites. Westow residents have responded by constructing a ‘Swift Tower’ with 11 nest holes, and putting special nestboxes on houses, using funding from Yorkshire Water. Ryedale’s varied landscape is ideal for swifts, providing lots of flying insects and stone and pantile buildings which suit their nesting requirements. Swifts are nest and mate faithful, returning to the exact same pantile to breed with the same partner every year. They struggle to get under rooftiles unless someone has remembered that swifts need a home too. There are many simple and affordable ways to accommodate Swifts, and advice and case studies are available at: http://www.swift-conservation.org or http:// actionforswifts.blogspot.co.uk/ You might like to have a swift nestbox after considering: • Swifts are very clean, using only cobwebs and feathers for their nests. They eat their chicks’ poo and leave little or no mess beneath the nest site. They have one brood of 2-3 chicks per year. • Swifts are long lived and could return to your nest box for years.
• Swifts are amongst the fastest fliers on earth, can ‘sprint’ at 60mph and have been recorded flying at over 5 thousand metres in the Himalayas. • Swifts don’t land until they breed. They fly nonstop for months; mating and sleeping on the wing. • Swifts indulge in fast social ‘screaming parties’ around rooftops, with chicks in the nest responding as they hurtle3 past. • Swifts have soft beaks which open wide like a basking shark’s mouth to scoop up flying insects, and strong feet so they can cling to vertical surfaces to inspect potential nestsites. They have special bristles around their eyes which act as sunglasses. • Swifts are considered magical by many cultures, and are a source of artistic inspiration. See if you can spot our Swift Tower when visiting Westow, and have a look at: http://actionforswifts.blogspot.co.uk/p/ swifts-localnetwork-sln.html to find local Swift networks.

Leisure Centre Birthday Party By The Pastoral Poet The sprawling reach of interplay, Has strained the confines of the home. The leisure centre now holds sway, As venue for that special day. The modern child is now au fait With every infant pleasure dome. Pass the parcel, and blind man’s buff, Twenty questions -- Too much hassle. Hunt the thimble and call my bluff, Have now become such boring stuff, Reliable, --- but not enough To oust the bouncy castle. The leisure centre offers space The domicile could ill afford. Where children hurry to unlace Their shoes; And join the steeplechase, Around the cushioned floor they race. From side lines mums and dads applaud. A person there to supervise, Whose eagerness seems overdone. A sentinel with eagle eyes, Makes sure no child can compromise The ‘Health and Safety’ that applies To even this, --- a house of fun. Play over, boys and girls repair, To where the scrumptious food is served. As each child clamours for a chair, The floor receives an ample share, Which makes each mum and dad aware Of carpets in their homes. ----- Preserved.

Gardening Essential Scent. By Pippa Greenwood
A
garden without perfume is, well, like apple pie without the cream!
However good your flower beds and borders may look, however well-clad with climbers your walls and fences are, if there are no wonderful scents and perfumes your garden will be missing a vital ingredient. That’s not to say you have to sacrifice the colour and texture when you use perfumed plants. Far from it – many heavily-scented flowers are also really good-looking. So what is perfume all about and how do you make the most of it? Perfume plays a role in plant evolution and their success; in many cases it is there to attract attention to the flower and to entice a suitable pollinator. Once lured over by the perfume, the insect can enjoy the nectar the flower offers and pollinate it in the process, so increasing the

chances of it producing a new generation. There are a good number of plants which produce an alluring perfume during the evening or nighttime. At this time of day there are not likely to be bees or butterflies about but there will be moths, especially during the summer months. Moths can be useful pollinators and although a plant like the sweetly-perfumed night-scented stock may not have flamboyant flowers, it will be successfully pollinated.
in pots so that you can enjoy all they have to offer! If you’ve space for a small pergola, it has the potential to make a great home for some perfumed climbers, and what could be lovelier than to wander from one part of the garden to another via a tunnel of perfume? There are many perfumed roses which make great pergola plants and have flexible stems, such as the repeat flowering climbers ‘Ena Harkness’ (red) or ‘New Dawn’ (pale, dusky pink) or ‘Zephirine Drouhin’ (brightest pink).
For most of us, the stronger the perfume the better. But weather conditions can alter the level of perfume that reaches your nose. In a wind-swept spot the perfume can literally be blown away, and if temperatures are unusually low this too can cause scent levels to drop. So bear this in mind when choosing where to put your perfumed plants.
Make sure that the air coming into your house via windows left ajar is delicately fragrant. Pop smaller perfumed plants such as ‘Nemesia Fragrant Cloud’ or lavenders into window boxes or wall baskets, and enjoy their wonderful perfume as it wafts into bedrooms, bathrooms and sitting rooms.
Smaller or more subtly-scented plants grown for their perfume can pass unnoticed if sited too far away from where you can enjoy them. The classic examples are some of the polyanthus or the miniature iris, whose perfume will easily pass you by if they are grown in a far-flung border. Plant smaller perfumed plants in raised areas or perhaps
If you enjoy sitting out on your patio or in your back yard after sundown then, as well as having daytime perfume, be sure to include some flowers that will be at their best in the evening. For a warm summer’s evening the small creamy-white flowers of night-scented stock take some beating, or if you want something a little showier then try the

Make sure that patio pots and other containers have their fair share of perfumed plants – vibrant colours can be provided by most bedding plants, but try to include a few scented stunners as well. How about some hyacinths or one of my favourites, the Heliotrope or cherry pie, with its flowers in white or shades of purple and whose densely packed flower heads will produce perfume throughout the summer? Wall shrubs are a perfect way to disguise a lessthan-attractive house or garage wall. For a sunny spot the blue-flowered Ceaonothus produces a distinctly honey-perfumed scent, or go more exotic and plant up a wall on a well-drained soil with the pineapple broom Cytissus batanderei – with its lovely silvery-coloured foliage and bright yellow flowers it looks sensational, but once you sniff those pineapple-scented blooms you’ll be hooked.

It's showtime! Does your dog have the waggiest tail or the most appealing eyes? Can they perform a trick or two? Perhaps they are an exceptional biscuit catcher? Why not bring your dog along to Ryedale Dog Rescue’s popular fun dog show, where there’s classes for all shapes and sizes - and of course the ‘happiest rescue’ class! So start pampering your pooches and practising those tricks as the show takes place on Sunday 22nd July at the Cricket & Football Club ground (opposite Ryedale House council offices) Old Malton. The Fun Show is a great family day out with lots of classes, stalls and refreshments - There may even be a sausage eating competition...no human entries for this though! Every penny raised goes to RDR and will be spent on rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing the dogs in our care.
Please check our website and Facebook page for info on all the fun dog shows... He has recently been taken back into our care and is fine around other dogs, both on and off lead and affectionate towards people. He does need an experienced owner who understands the needs of a young terrier and can keep him occupied and happy while setting him boundaries for what is and isn’t allowed. We would be looking for an active home where there are no small children due to Ralph’s enthusiasm for life.
For further information on Ryedale Dog Rescue please visit our website www.ryedaledogrescue.com or you can contact us on 07581 324153 (Please remember we are a charity run entirely by unpaid volunteers, most of whom work full-time, so please be patient and we will return your call as soon as possible. Thank you)

At this time of year, we often see a lot of itchy dogs, the cause of this can be due to a hypersensitivity to food or plants. Approximately 10-15% of dogs in the UK are affected by allergic disease although they may not show signs if they are managed well. Allergies often result in the skin in the ears, around the eyes, on the belly and on the feet becoming red and itchy. However, other signs such as runny eyes, wheezing or diarrhoea can be also be seen. If you notice your dog scratching more than usual or see any red areas, it is important to have them checked by a vet as we can get the inflammation and itching under control and try to find the cause of the problem. Unfortunately, allergic skin disease is a lifelong condition and can be very difficult to get under control. To start with, we may take skin samples to check for parasites, bacteria or yeast. If these samples are clear, then a blood sample can be taken to see what allergens may be causing the signs. A food trial may also be recommended to try and rule out dietary issues. If the blood sample shows that there are positive results for allergens such as pollens or grasses, injections can be made up specifically for these. The injections are then given monthly to desensitise your pet against the allergens. If there are positive results for food allergens, then a diet can be chosen which excludes these ingredients. It is important to maintain a healthy skin barrier in allergic dogs, this can be done be adding essential fatty acids to the diet and using medicated shampoos that prevent the skin becoming dry and flaky. Regular flea control is important as flea bites can be very itchy, resulting in a flare up of the skin disease. Regular ear cleaning and washing the paws after walks also helps to reduce allergens on the skin. Sometimes antibiotics or steroids may be required to get a flare-up under control, the key to long-term success is to use a combination of therapies and adapt these treatments as required. For more advice about itchy pets, please come and speak to us or visit www.avactaanimalhealth.com.
