elcome to our June edition.
As I’m writing (first week of May), the temperature is soaring and there is a sense of excitement at the prospect of a Bank Holiday bathed in sun. I could be out enjoying time in the garden - had my other half not treated the lawn with moss killer and fertiliser so I can’t walk on it! He was going away for work though and I suppose we can look forward to a lovely green lawn when it’s raining in a couple of weeks’ time! In the office we really value those quieter moments after we’ve sent an edition to print. Chasing down those last bits of editorial, adverts and community events, jigging and re-jigging space and checking the index before pressing the sign-off button with the printers is super stressful. I have every admiration for weekly or daily publications – I just couldn’t do it! It’s simply lovely for a few fleetingly brief days to feel we have a whole fresh month ahead. At the first opportunity we tend to have a team meeting, over cake and coffee at a local café, to regroup and start planning the next one. Our advertising makes up about 50-60% of our pages and is always in – it’s what pays for the rest! We then have (sometimes tense) discussions about what else we can include. We work hard to give some space to everything but sometimes there’s just so much going on. The summer months are often like this as they’re awash with local events, from small village fetes to larger community-run events. If you have a local event happening in July or August – or even September – please let us know early so we can save you some space. So it’s no surprise that this month’s edition is super busy. Our comprehensive event listings are worth a good browse (they’re always free to local not-for-
profit volunteer-led groups and charities), and there are other larger events scattered throughout the magazine so make sure you take time over a cuppa to have a read. Congratulations to Mr Gray from Helmsley for winning our April competition. Those little Easter bunnies were really hard to find! Until next month…

Spotlight on St Leonard's We’ve had a busy year so far and are very much looking forward to a great year of fundraising events still to come. Centre and are currently looking for any budding artists or photographers who would like to exhibit there or at the main festival hub at The University of York.
Hello and welcome to the very first Spotlight on St Leonard’s! My name is Kathryn and I’m the new Community Fundraiser at St Leonard’s Hospice, covering the Ryedale area. Although the Hospice itself is based in York, we cover a large area which includes most of Ryedale. Here at the Hospice the daffodils are in bloom and we have some very cute lambs frolicking in the fields which the patients are enjoying watching. We’ve had a busy year so far and are very much looking forward to a great year of fundraising events still to come.
We will also be displaying a ‘Ryedale Miles of Care’ art installation which will be on display in Pickering Library and will then go on tour across Ryedale. This will be a wonderful community-led art project featuring 190 flowers, each representing 50 miles that the Hospice@Home Team travelled across Ryedale over a 12 month period. We are looking for people of all ages to create the flowers, whether that is by knitting, crocheting, painting or colouring one in. You can create any flower you wish, but you will find a template to colour in, along with more information, on our website.
March saw us hold our very first Strictly St Leonard’s which was a huge success and fantastic evening for all involved. If you would like to know more about the event and fancy putting your dancing shoes on in 2019 please get in touch! 2018 is shaping up to be a right royal year and we’re very much embracing this at St Leonard’s! On Saturday 9th June we’re holding our 10th annual Midnight Walk, inviting people to “Walk the Royal Miles”. We’re all very excited planning our regal fancy dress outfits and hope you’ll join us! We are delighted to have been selected as the Ryedale Festival local charity partner this year. We will be attending selected events throughout the duration of the festival so please do look out for us and say hello. The Hospice is holding its first Sunflower Arts Festival in July and we hope to get as many people involved as possible. We have very kindly been given some exhibition space at Helmsley Arts

Local charities boosted by Lions donations Three local charities are sharing the benefits of £6,000 donated by the Ryedale Lions club. The money from fundraising activities of the Lions, including the Christmas Santa Sleigh tour, will help the Next Steps group, Dementia Forward and Scarborough & Ryedale Carers Resource. Each group will receive £2,000. “These are three of the many local charities doing amazing work to help the community and those in need through no fault of their own,” said Lions president, Brian Potter. Scarborough & Ryedale Carers Resource’s service manager, Jodie Peckitt, thanked the Lions for an amazing donation. “We will be putting the funding towards our young carers service, supporting
young carers across the Ryedale area, with focused activities in building confidence and selfesteem,” she said. Next Steps Mental Health Resource Centre will continue its community service with lonely and isolated people in rural Ryedale through its outreach groups in Pickering, Kirkbymoorside and surrounding villages. Dementia Forward will use the money to support local people affected by dementia and their families. “We also hope to roll out our Welcome to Wellness course to local people, with the focus on wellbeing and taking positive steps to remain well” said Service Manager Amanda Stevens. “Ryedale Lions club regularly raises more than £20,000 each year. Since the club was formed 50 years ago, we have raised the equivalent of more than £1 million in today’s money, primarily to help needy individuals and local good causes,” said Brian Potter.

There have been four sessions so far, and the variety of items that have been repaired, or advised upon, gets more and more interesting. We’ve relined an eiderdown, attended to zips in bags, jackets, boiler-suits and trousers, repaired computers, sorted mobile phones, revived vacuum cleaners, hedge-trimmers, radios and CD players, tables, stools, plates, a toy frog, and replaced some military medal ribbons. Is there nothing our team won’t tackle? This venture is such a powerful antidote to the throw-away culture that has prevailed for so long. Discarded items are filling our oceans. In countries without the means for dealing with it, western-style litter covers large areas of countryside. In Jordan, for example, someone saw piles of waste about 100 yards wide along both sides of the roads. Several African countries have put us to shame with their total banning of plastic bags, well before we came up with our rather weedy partial ban.

Go on, get your bake on! TV presenter Mel Giedroyc and the charity Marie Curie are calling on people in Ryedale to throw a Blooming Great Tea Party this June. It’s easy to get involved. Pick a date in June then invite your friends, colleagues and family round for a tea party, bake sale or a “Bake Off” style competition. All you need to do is ask for donations on the day. The money you raise will help Marie Curie provide vital care and support for people living with a terminal illness and their loved ones. Blooming Great Tea Party super fan, Mel Giedroyc, who is fronting the campaign said: “I’m supporting Marie Curie’s Blooming Great Tea Party because it is the most sublimely joyous, wondrous event that takes place in June for the best cause. My mum is an amazing hostess and a brilliant baker. My all-time favourite cake is still mum’s chocolate
fridge cake – I’ll be making some for my own tea party this year!” “My top tip would be to invite more people than you can possibly fit into your house. They will squeeze, don’t worry. For cake, people will do anything.” Jennifer Carmichael, Community Fundraiser for Ryedale says: “Throwing a Blooming Great Tea Party for Marie Curie is an easy way to get together with friends, family and colleagues and raise money for a great cause. You can invite the whole village round for a garden party, or spend time with a few close friends and buy in your favourite treat! The trail runs along Ellerburn Beck so it takes in beautiful valley views as well. As you gain confidence, the green cycle route is an 8 to 12 mile ride along the high plateau around Adderstone. You’ll travel on forest roads and grass tracks with a few short climbs and descents. It’s a great way to see different parts of Dalby. The four mile extension takes in the beautiful Crosscliffe and Jerry Noddle viewpoints so it’s well worth the extra miles! As you crank up through your cycling gears and gain more skills and fitness, you can tackle the blue and red routes. For extreme and experienced riders there’s Dixon’s Hollow bike park and the World Cup cycle trail. Wednesday 30 May Dr Melanie Giles will be sharing a fascinating insight into the lives, deaths and beliefs of the Iron Age settlers of the Yorkshire Wolds. Journey in Malton with Ryedale Book Festival Ryedale Book Festival invites guests to join them on their inaugural Journey Fest Weekend this summer. The Festival is trying something different this year - its first journeythemed weekend, Friday 29th June to Sunday 1st July, which is sponsored by local tour operator Inntravel. The weekend begins on the morning of Friday 29th June with former airhostess Toni Mackenzie, writer of the bestselling self-help title, ‘Your Flight to Happiness’ following a life-changing experience when she crash-landed. The afternoon sees a paper craft workshop, led by York artist Lu Mason. A special Journey for Freedom dinner takes place at the Old Lodge Hotel, Malton on the Friday evening with guest speakers Christina Lamb and Emma Jane Kirby, authors of ‘The Girl from Aleppo’ and ‘The Optician of Lampedusa’ whose books have been described as putting “a human face on the refugee crisis”. Proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Refugee Council charity working in North Yorkshire. On Saturday 30th June, the whole family can join in the free Town Treasure Trail in Malton’s town centre, while Malton Library will be holding a free interactive children’s event based on Oliver Jeffers’ title “Lost and Found”. Young fans of David Attenborough will enjoy Mike Unwin’s Incredible Animal Journeys based on the research for his new title, ‘Migration’. In the afternoon, have a Q&A session with blogger Sian Anna Lewis, author of ‘The Girl Outdoors’, a modern adventure guide aimed at solo travellers. Then be inspired by Raynor Winn’s description of what she discovered during her redemptive walk along the South West Coastal Path, featured in her book ‘The Salt Path’. Budding writers can learn from bestselling fiction writer Rachel Hore about the art of creating such a convincing sense of place for her readers and sit back and enjoy some tall tales from storyteller Ian Douglas. Sunday 1st July will appeal to ramblers of all abilities as Andrew White, presenter of the television series ‘Walks Around Britain’, will lead a guided walk to Scampston Park, ending with a visit to Malton Show. DOG OF THE MONTH: BENSON Benson is a 3 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier whose tail never stops wagging. Originally picked up as a stray he is such an affectionate boy with people. He is fully vaccinated and has recently been castrated so hasn’t mixed with many other dogs yet, but those he has met he’s got along fine with. He loves to run and play so would be looking for

Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month Ellie Kift (RVN fdSc). Station House Vets
Last month was the BVNA’S Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month (VNAM). The aim is to help create an awareness of the importance of the role of the Veterinary Nurse both in practice, and in the provision of pet care. Becoming a Registered Veterinary nurse (RVN) is more intensive than people first think, and involves a minimum of two years training, through either an apprenticeship or degree route. Both routes require regular theory and practical exams; plus a minimum of 1,800 hours in a practice. After qualifying, an RVN must maintain their place on the VN Register by adhering to a strict code of professional conduct. Being on the register allows VNs to perform procedures known as “Schedule 3”; these include small lump removals, taking blood, putting cannulas into patients and so much more. Unfortunately, despite all this, the title of RVN is still not a protected title, meaning any unqualified or untrained person can call themselves a Veterinary Nurse. A higher level of public awareness is essential in order to prevent someone with no formal training from monitoring your pet’s anaesthetics or performing surgery on your pooch! Back in 2014 a huge amount of people signed the petition to protect the VN title, and it achieved 37,000 signatures! Regretfully it did not reach the required 100,000 signatures necessary for the issue to be discussed in the House of Commons. As an RVN myself I am extremely proud of what we do, and strongly believe we are not ‘just’ veterinary Nurses. We are phlebotomists, radiographers, anaesthetists, surgical assistants, diagnostic assistants, lab technicians, recovery nurses, consultants, infection control nurses and a caring professional providing the best care for your pet. All RVNs hold a RCVS badge in recognition of their training and commitment to the profession. steoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis that affects dog’s joints and it’s is the most common cause of chronic pain in dogs.

Arthritis occurs when the protective layers that cushion joints (cartilage) begin to deteriorate, causing inflammation and pain. Because it is progressive, the effects of arthritis worsen with age. The signs of Arthritis are predictable and shouldn’t be dismissed as just signs of old age. It can cause serious pain which many dogs try to hide, however, the following consistent signs are good clues that your dog may be suffering from arthritis: • Limping • Stiffness after exercise • Reluctance to exercise • Difficulty rising, sitting or climbing stairs
Arthritis is also most common medical condition in dogs, in fact it’s estimated that one in five dogs suffer from this condition. Although any dog, at any age can have arthritis, some dogs are at greater risk: • Dogs over the age of five years • Inactive or overweight dogs • Large or giant breeds • Dogs who have suffered joint injuries • Dogs predisposed to developmental orthopaedic disorders such as hip or elbow dysplasia Dogs that are overweight are more likely to develop arthritis as the extra weight puts added pressure on their joints. The first thing to understand is that, with the right care, you can relieve your dog’s pain and help him return to a more active, happy life. However, treatment will likely be life long as unfortunately there is no cure for arthritis. If you are worried about your dog please contact your closest clinic to book an appointment.
