ello and welcome to our June edition.
This month we’re celebrating National Volunteers’ Week, which runs from 1st to 7th June. We want to say a huge thank you for the contribution and hard work of hundreds of volunteers from across our area. From trustees and campaigners to carers and fundraisers, I can’t help but think how much volunteers improve the lives of others around them. They help tidy our towns, encourage village communities, run village halls, gardening groups and the scouts and guides. They work tirelessly to keep our libraries open and accessible to all, plan amazing scarecrow festivals and help ensure our arts venues remain vibrant places for the community to gather – it’s incredible what you all do. Would you like to volunteer? If you can spare even just a couple of hours a week or month, there are many local organisations who would love to hear from you. You can find a few who are joining in with the celebrations on page 43. We’re also excited to see the number of events happening across the region this month - there’s plenty to keep everyone entertained. You’ll find them advertised right here, so remember to keep your copy handy! Did you know we publish two editions of the Handy Mag? There’s one for Ryedale and one of the north side of York. Over 52,000 magazines land in letterboxes each month. But did you also know you can also read the editions online? Our website (www.thehandymag.com) also features a whole

A passionate advocate of twentieth-century painting and design, James writes and lectures widely and has curated two exhibitions at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. The private lives of artist couples are often startling and never dull, and the paintings and sculpture described here are glorious. Held in Helmsley Arts Centre auditorium. GARDEN EQUIPMENT WHEN YOU NEED IT FROM CORDEX HIRE • Plumbing equipment • And much, much more! Tim Grice, the Operations Manager, also explains that if you don’t see what you need on their website, they will do everything they can to source what you require. Their friendly, specialist team are available on the phone, online or in person.
M
alton-based equipment hire company, CorDEX, are on-hand this spring and summer for all your gardening needs.
Whether you’re planning a big project in your garden that requires a digger, or you simply need a lawnmower for the day, CorDEX have exactly what you’re looking for – including advice on the right equipment and a delivery and collection service. They’re able to deliver all over North Yorkshire, which is ideal if you want to save money instead of buying costly equipment or tools for only a few uses. You get the equipment when you need it, and they collect it once you’re done – it’s that simple. Tony Holliday, the owner of CorDEX, set up the business just under a year ago. In fact, they will celebrate their first anniversary on the 1st July, and have been going from strength to strength since opening – they recently became the area’s authorised dealer for Loncin engines – and are always expanding their offering.
Hiring equipment through CorDEX will also give you added peace of mind with their 24-hour emergency service. So if something goes wrong out of hours, such as a breakdown, they are contactable through a dedicated number and will come out to sort the problem. Tim adds how “you deal with a person, not just a company”, which emphasises their focus on quality and great customer service. They also offer added extras like courtesy calls to make sure you’re happy every step of the way. They’ll be at the upcoming Malton Show on the 30th June, too, so you can go along and say hello to the team.
What’s more, their newly-opened trade counter in Malton means you can go and speak to their team face-to-face, see a selection of what you can hire and even collect your order, should you wish. Since opening, they have been supplying local tradesmen, farmers and homeowners with all kinds of machinery, tools and equipment on a short- and long-term basis. You can hire: • Power tools • Landscaping equipment • Earth moving equipment • Concrete and cutting equipment ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

EVERYBODY’S FREE TO WEAR SUNSCREEN
W
by Anna Maxwell, C2 Safety
hen we go on our summer holidays in search of a tan we do not hesitate to protect our skin with sunscreen. We are all too well aware of the pain and discomfort of burnt skin and the direct link to skin cancer. But so often we are at home doing our hobbies or in the workplace we overlook the need or relevance of protecting ourselves by using such as dust masks when sawing, drilling and sanding, eye protection when mixing and applying wet solvents or paint so it doesn’t splash in our eyes, or simply wearing gloves to protect from abrasions, cuts and contact dermatitis from handling unpleasant substances.
employer. It is not up to the employee to decide if they want to wear the PPE they have been provided - it is the law and also their own health at risk. Any compensation claim for injuries sustained at work will require the employee to demonstrate that they had not been provided with PPE or trained on how to use it. They will also need to demonstrate they were wearing their PPE and using it correctly. The employer will have to show that PPE was issued and training provided. This is easily done in the form of a PPE issue register kept in the employee’s file and regular toolbox talks (informal safety briefings). We can help with face fit testing or dust masks, general PPE advice and risk identification. We can also provide PPE training and monthly tool box talks to keep your employees up to speed with H&S awareness. And as the weather gets warmer don’t forget to wear sunscreen!

SAFETY
In the workplace the law requires all employers to protect their workforce from foreseeable risks and provide suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) free of charge and to replace it when it is damaged. This may include safety boots, overalls, face masks, hi vis clothing, gloves, hearing protection, eye protection and potentially armoured equipment such as chain saw clothing. Employers are obliged to identify the risks and PPE required and must also give training on its correct use - this may include providing face fit testing and certification for dust masks.
From risk assessments to safety audits and policies to training, we can give you complete peace of mind for your business
An employer must enforce the wearing of correct PPE and may rightly discipline employees for not complying. Under H&S law employees also have a responsibility to not endanger themselves and others and to comply with safety direction from their

Driverless Cars Explained By James Baggott LEVEL 2
D
riverless cars are a hot motoring topic, with manufacturers, politicians and transport chiefs all talking about them. But what are they, and what do they mean for the future of motoring? The Government predicts that driverless cars could be in full use on the UK’s roads by 2021.
ARE THEY SAFE?
The safety of autonomous vehicles was questioned after a woman was killed while crossing the road in front of a self-driving vehicle in Arizona. The issue is the co-habitation of road users and the driverless vehicles – until people are sure how to interact with them, accidents will still happen.
WHICH MANUFACTURERS CURRENTLY OFFER SOME LEVEL OF AUTONOMOUS ASSISTANCE?
You’ll find some partial self-driving technology in cars from Audi, BMW, Citroen, DS, Fiat, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Mazda, Mercedes, Nissan, Peugeot, Porsche, Renault, Seat, Skoda, Subaru, Suzuki, Tesla, Toyota, Vauxhall, Volkswagen and Volvo. Most cars do incorporate the technology, but it can include features such as adaptive cruise control.
LEVELS OF AUTONOMY
The various levels of autonomous assistance are categorised from one to five. Here’s what they mean.
LEVEL 1
Introduced around 1990s/00s This base level means that just one element of the driving process is taken over by the car – but the driver is still very much in charge. This level of assistance is mature now and was pioneered by early cruise control systems. 36 | Handy Mag | June 2019
Present day Level 2 autonomy represents pretty much where we are today. Computers can deal with multiple functions, so the car can take control of steering, throttle and brake functions – but the driver must show they’re in charge of the car by putting a hand on the steering wheel.
LEVEL 3
Estimated 2020 At level 3 all of the safety-critical functions can be controlled by the car, but the driver must still be able to intervene if necessary – this isn’t completely ‘handsoff ’ technology yet.
LEVEL 4
Mid 2020s Level 4 sees cars capable of being fully autonomous, albeit in selected areas – most likely inner-city ones. Dedicated lane markings and infrastructure will be required to ensure that the cars keep on the straight and narrow, too. Complex mapping systems will combine with advanced cameras, sensors and artificial intelligence to determine where the car should go. The driver may have to intervene at certain points, but for the most part it’ll mean hands-free driving.
LEVEL 5
Late 2020s/early 2030s Level 5 will see the vehicles derestricted – they will be capable of driving anywhere, without the need for a driver. There won’t be a need for a steering wheel or traditional ‘controls’; these vehicles will be fully capable of operating themselves. It’ll free up space inside the cars, so they’ll probably look more like lounges on wheels. That’s what we predict, anyway.
TIMELINE PREDICTIONS
This timeline is based on predictions by many different manufacturers, though most agree that the bulk of progress will happen between 2020 and 2030. It’s a real technology race at the moment – each company is attempting to develop their own systems quicker than the rest. It’s why these dates are estimations – some may get there sooner than others.

FAMILY FUN DAYS OUT AT SUMMER AGRICULTURAL SHOWS
W
ith the temperatures warming, there’s nothing better than getting out into the great outdoors. And this year’s line-up of local agricultural shows are a great excuse to get out and about with your family this summer. Many of North Yorkshire’s shows have been going from strength to strength for well over a century. Not only are they a celebration of our farming community and all their hard work over the past year, but they’re also a chance to get involved with all kinds of activities while catching up with friends and family. This year, the hotly-anticipated Malton Show kicks off the season on the 30th June, followed by the Ryedale Show on the 30th July, Danby on the 14th August, Egton on the 21st August and Farndale on August Bank Holiday Monday. Expect the usual livestock classes plus lots of extra treats, including fun dog shows and dog agility, craft sessions and stalls, vintage tractor and car exhibitions, and farmers markets where you can pick up a range of locally-made products. What’s more, food and drink stands are available throughout the day, so you can try local produce
on the spot. Kids are well taken care of, too, with entertainment and designated children’s sections kitted out with engaging activities. Of course, it wouldn’t be an agricultural show without a horse section where you can admire countless classes as well as a range of exhibitors and demonstrations. The shows are designed with everyone in mind – both the farming community and townspeople – so if you’re a newbie or seasoned participant, everyone is welcome. Fingers crossed for great weather this summer!

LIONS CHARITY BONANZA
en local charities are set to receive £500 from Malton and Norton Lions in a second annual grant scheme. Launching the Malton and Norton Lions Community Fund scheme, Lion President, Steve Sidaway said; “After the success of last years Centenary Awards, we have decided to run the grants scheme again and are encouraging small local charities to apply. “In the current economic climate, it is often difficult for smaller charities to gain grant funds so we want to do our bit locally to support these groups who work so hard in Malton and Norton and contribute so much to our community by the brilliant work they do. “The Lions work throughout the year raising funds to support local charities and individuals and we want
to offer grants to a wider range of groups that may not have thought of approaching us for funding in the past, but who want to deliver smaller projects that benefit others in the area.” To apply for a grant of £500, applicants should contact malton.lions@btinternet.com to request an application form or call 01653 694546 for further details. The deadline for applications is 5pm on June 30th

Could you join our team? York Against Cancer has been making life better for people living with cancer for more than 30 years. We couldn’t do it without our loyal, friendly volunteers, some seen here at a 30th anniversary party held to thank them for their work. Our volunteers help with everything from street collections to marshalling at sporting events and packing the Christmas cards we sell each year. They also serve in our shops in Huntington and at York Hospital, and when we move home to the community stadium at Monks Cross, we’ll need more volunteers to help in our fantastic new shop.

S
aint Catherine’s provides care, in the hospice and at home, to patients and their families covering an area of more than 1,600 square miles, including Ryedale, Scarborough, Whitby and parts of East Yorkshire. It costs £5.5 million a year to provide these services free of charge. Only 30% of this comes from NHS funding – the rest is achieved through fundraising and donations. This is one of the reasons why volunteers are so important to Saint Catherine’s – without their dedication, we simply could not provide the level of services we currently offer. Whether you can give a couple of hours a month or a few days, everything makes a real difference to patients and their families. We have a huge variety of volunteer opportunities in our shops, support groups, in-patient unit, wellbeing centre, fundraising department, in housekeeping, catering, on reception, as a driver and more. Thank you to all our volunteers – you are all superstars and the service you provide is invaluable.

CHARLIE’S COLUMN Gaming
Gaming has become a massively popular pastime in the last decade. It is a wonderful, fulfilling hobby that has only become more popular with time and is now associated with people of all ages. It is now something many people love to do and something that has become the standard norm for 2.2 billion people in the world, according to a 2017 report. It is now almost unavoidable in today’s society. Gaming is no longer restricted to a PC or standard gaming console. Gaming on smartphones and tablets has gone through the roof, with Candy Crush, Angry Birds and Fortnite being three of the biggest hits of the past decade. It means you can play absolutely anywhere, in the park, at work or just sat in your car waiting for someone. It is definitely the best and most fun way to kill time. The only problem is that this convenience can prompt an addiction to your most beloved hobby. Gaming Addiction is something that I struggle with myself. The appeal of gaming is that you can get lost in a huge number of different stories and worlds alone or with friends. It is a hobby, but sometimes it becomes everything and it can get to the point where it is the only thing you want to do all day…everyday! When I’m bedbound, it is an easy way to escape from my problems. If I’m feeling fine there is no real excuse for spending every moment gaming. Recently I’ve been writing plenty of gaming reviews. This means my time spent gaming is going towards something more productive! It has given my hobby more meaning that helps make me feel more satisfied and I’m in a much better place now. We’ve come a long way in twenty years and gaming is now seen as a hugely popular hobby. I have made new friends and spent time exploring hundreds of different worlds, on various games. I feel that as long as I keep gaming as a hobby, I’m free to carry on playing. It’s just about finding a balance. 50 | Handy Mag | June 2019

TOP TIPS FROM A DENTAL PROFESSIONAL
TOOTH WHITENING DO YOU KNOW THE FACTS?
W
e would all like a bright white even smile, it’s one of the most wished for cosmetic enhancements by young and old alike. What you might not know is that whitening of teeth by Christine Parker should be only provided by a BDS (GDC 72136) dentist or a dental care professional acting under the prescription of a dentist. Beauty therapists who provide whitening services are breaking the law. This is not so dentists can charge you more money than buying some bleach off the internet its actually to protect you and your teeth from serious and potentially irreversible damage. Your teeth should be carefully checked before whitening to ensure there are no cavities the bleaching agent could get into, they will also ensure that any material that is used is safe and in the correct concentration to lighten your teeth but not damage them. Dentists using the tray system provide custom trays to minimise any leakage of the bleaching agent into your mouth, the mouth is a delicate place and you should know exactly what is in the agent and that it has been carefully manufactured and properly stored to maintain its efficiency. The amount of bleaching agent is strictly regulated in the UK to ensure that any possible side effects such as increased tooth enamel porosity is minimised. The more porous the tooth the more it will stain so poor bleaching material will cause your teeth to stain more. Materials bought over the internet have no guarantees they could be made in someone’s shed and packaged up, any dentist will tell you the damaged teeth they have seen. So be bleach safe and speak to your dentist for a professional result.

HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?
L
By Julie Wilson, Chartered Financial Planner at PenLife Associates
et’s face it- most people have no idea how much money they’re going to need for the rest of their life.
You may have various assets and investments. But do you know the value of these, what they mean, or how they can impact your retirement? People usually avoid the subject. Maybe they don’t want to think about it. Perhaps, they simply don’t care. They say they’ll “do it later”. But mostly they just don’t know enough about it. But most people in retirement have thought AT LEAST ONCE about whether their money will last as long as they do. And that’s perfectly normal. But finding the happy medium between ‘What if I run out?’ AND ‘What if I leave too much?’ is complicated. And it means stepping away from the numbers, statistics and speculation. And turning your mind to what you
actually want out of life. This could be where you’d like to visit and what you’d like to buy. And how much you’d like to leave to your family. Everyone has a different number. Different hobbies, ambitions and goals cost different amounts . That’s why planning to suit your individual preferences is so important. Don’t let financial jargon and confusion stop you from getting what you want out of life. Life isn’t a rehearsal. Sorting an effective financial plan with one of our qualified advisers could get you the peace of mind. So you can get on with enjoying retirement. And that new car you were unsure whether to buy? It could be yours! This FREE book explores how much is ‘Enough’.

SPOTLIGHT ON ST LEONARD’S
H
By Kathryn Craven
ello everyone. This month I would like to start by sharing with you a couple of excerpts from our most recent Hospice stories submitted to our website. St Leonard’s touches people’s lives in many different ways and I feel these excerpts really demonstrate this: ‘A Hospice sounds like a scary place to be, but believe me when I say that it isn’t. Without St Leonard’s Hospice and its Sunflower Centre, I don’t think I would be here today. I really cannot thank them enough. The love, care and support I have received has been truly life-saving. I am surrounded by amazing staff and volunteers who I now call my friends. I walk through the doors and my world changes. It is full of love, light and happiness and it has helped my live my life to the full.’ ‘Gerry sadly passed away on the 7th May 2016 and in October of 2018; I was accepted as a volunteer Receptionist at the Hospice. It is a place of dedication, love, compassion and support and is not to be feared. Thank you St Leonard’s Hospice.’ In other news there are some really great fundraising activities happening at the moment including our very own St Leonard’s Hospice Coffee Blend! This special edition coffee has been kindly created by York Coffee Emporium, and can be purchased from their website (https://yorkemporium.co.uk/products/ st-leonards-hospice-coffee-blend) £1 from every 100g of the coffee sold will be donated to the Hospice so if coffee is your thing, why not give it a try? I am also delighted to announce that we have a really exciting fundraiser in Ryedale on Friday 12th July at the delightful Feversham Arms Hotel in Helmsley. Join us for an afternoon with star of television and antiques expert Caroline Hawley. Enjoy a drink on arrival from 12 noon followed by a delicious two course lunch and tea or coffee. Then sit back and enjoy the beautiful surroundings whilst listing to Caroline’s tales from the antiques world. Following Caroline’s talk she will be offering valuations so if you have an object you have always wanted to know more about this is your chance! Tickets can be purchased online at the Hospice website, by phone on 01904 777 777 and also directly from The Feversham Arms Hotel. Have a lovely (hopefully sunny) June, and I will see you again in August with some news about our Sunflower Arts Festival! Kathryn ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

Short Story The Petrifying Well “After you, madam.” Dorothy lifted her head up from her map to see a wiry man in a black tail coat and a top hat holding the gate open for her. She was relieved. Though a confident rambler, she’d been unable to find the footpath through the woods. “Thanks.” She folded up the map. “I was beginning to think I was lost.” “Not at all. Well? You’ve timed it perfectly.” He squeezed ahead of her, waving a clipboard and a torch. “I’m Andy, by the way, and you are?” Dorothy politely introduced herself and agreed that she was indeed well. “Welcome, Dorothy.” He frowned at his clipboard. “Stick behind me. We don’t want anyone wandering off the beaten path.” Dorothy could see nowhere else to wander. The path was hemmed in on both sides by nettles, and the beech canopy made it almost too dark to see. “Keep close,” he called back to her. “It’s not far.” What’s not far? Dorothy thought. As soon as the path widened, she decided she would skip past him. The path was steep. She could hear a swollen brook nearby, dead branches knocking together, and a strange rustling she couldn’t account for. It was almost as though she was being followed. She was afraid to turn around, the path was so treacherous. “Halt!” Andy declared, stopping abruptly. “Before arriving at our destination, we must pause here,” he announced in a booming voice. “Must we?” Dorothy asked nervously. He swung round to face her, his torch shining under his chin. “Is witchcraft still alive in these ancient woods?” he declared in a dramatic voice. Dorothy gasped and nearly fell backwards. “What evil existed to give water the power to turn objects into stone?” he continued, the torchlight casting eerie shadows across his face. “It’s no coincidence that the process of turning something to 62 | Handy Mag | June 2019
stone is called petrification.” Andy’s eyes widened. “Indeed, when we are petrified don’t we all feel turned to stone?” Dorothy was feeling increasingly petrified. Behind her back she decisively rolled up her map. “Will science provide the answers?” he boomed, raising his arms. Dorothy swung the map and clouted him smartly on the wrist, knocking the torch right out of his hand. “Ouch!” he cried. “What did you do that for?” “Look here young man,” she said sternly, “get out of my way or I’ll scream, and when I scream you will turn to stone.” “But this is all part of the tour.” Andy winced, rubbing his arm. “What tour?” Dorothy snapped. “The tour of the petrifying well,” Andy said. “I didn’t agree to any tour,” Dorothy said indignantly. “You can’t just lure me into the forest like this, all alone.” “But you’re not all alone,” Andy said picking up his torch. “There’s a dozen other people behind you who’ve all paid to see the petrifying well.” Dorothy turned and saw a row of slightly embarrassed families in kagoules huddled awkwardly behind her on the path. “Now I think about it,” Andy consulted his clipboard, “I don’t believe your name’s even down on my list.” By Jackie Brewster

Howard Day 31st July 2019
Taking place on 31st July 2019, Howard Day will feature family fun activities, free admission for anyone with the name ‘Howard’, and the launch of a new initiative being penned as ‘Capturing the Castle’, a crowd sourced photo exhibition project.
C
astle Howard is known as one of Yorkshire’s best loved tourist attractions, and has been welcoming visitors from across the globe through its gates since building began in 1700. Today is no different, with around 250,000 people visiting the House and Gardens every year. 2019 will see the launch of a new event at Castle Howard… On the eve of ‘Yorkshire Day’, ‘Howard Day’ will celebrate all things Castle Howard and recognise the date the House opened to the general public for the first time.
“This exhibit will feature photos and memorabilia donated by the public as part of our first Crowd Sourced project” says Curator Dr Christopher Ridgway. “The aim is to compile a library of material from the past and present, revealing favourite views, memories and unusual sights and pictures that celebrate not only the place, but the people who visit and work here – they are what make Castle Howard so special.” If you would like to get involved, donating photos and memorabilia towards ‘Capturing the Castle’ please visit the Castle Howard website to find out how (www.castlehoward.co.uk/whats-on/ capturing_the_castle)

HOST YOUR OWN BLOOMING GREAT TEA PARTY
R
In aid of Marie Curie
iding on the success of the Great Daffodil Appeal, which raised an incredible £13,891.47 in York alone, Marie Curie are asking readers to consider hosting a Blooming Great Tea Party this June. Your support is invaluable in helping the charity carry on caring for people living with a terminal illness and their loved ones. What’s more, there are even more people and their families who will need support from Marie Curie in the coming years. That’s why they’re on the lookout for hosts of their Blooming Great Tea Party, which will take place during June. It’s an easy and fun way to fundraise – you simply get together with friends, family or colleagues for a tea party, bake sale of tea-rriffic tea break and ask for donations in return. It really is a piece of cake! Bishopthorpe Road’s newest addition, The Bishy Weigh, is already supporting the Blooming Great Tea Party this June, and want to encourage the local community to sign up for their own.
Owner Alice says, “We are thrilled to be supporting Marie Curie’s tea party and would encourage locals to take part and to pop into our store to source their ingredients – plastic free!” By hosting a tea party this summer you’ll help Marie Curie nurses provide nursing care and vital emotional support in people’s own homes. If you’re interested, visit www.mariecurie. org.uk/teaparty or call 0800 716 146 for a free fundraising pack to get your started. They’re counting on your cuppa!

STEPSISTER
Jennifer Donnelly Everyone knows the story of Cinderella, but who stops to consider her stepsisters? Isabelle is neither pretty nor demure. But if she’s brave enough to cut off her own toe to fit her foot in a glass slipper, what else is she capable of? While Stepsister is aimed at young adults, this imaginative story is also likely to appeal to older readers who fancy losing themselves in a twisted fairy tale for a few hours.
GROW ALL YOU CAN EAT IN 3 SQUARE FEET
Edited by Chauney Dunford When it comes to food, few things beat picking your own vegetables straight from the garden. And you don’t need a large plot to do it. Whether you have a balcony, a courtyard or just a windowsill, you can grow your own vegetables, fruit and herbs. This book offers plenty of advice for would-be growers, from which plants thrive in shady gardens to which flowers can help to protect your crops. You’ll soon be creating your own bicycle wheel trellis, balcony saddlebag or strawberry colander.

THE ROSIE RESULT
Graeme Simsion Professor Don Tillman is back, more than a decade after we first met him in The Rosie Project. This time, he has a new project – helping his son Hudson to settle into school (and neurotypical society). Hudson’s teacher thinks Hudson may be autistic. Don and Rosie need to decide whether to seek a formal diagnosis. And, while they’re at it, whether Don should be classed as autistic himself. While The Rosie Result is the third in the trilogy, it can be read as a standalone novel. A warm, humorous, thoughtprovoking read.

Cloud 9 Windows Service with A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloud 9 Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up, we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and
I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’
I get a huge amount of business from family and friends of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 328 8213 and he’ll be happy to help!
Cloud 9 Windows are based locally and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense.

Houseplant Heaven by Pippa Greenwood
N
ow is the time to give houseplants some TLC as they could do with some pampering! Check them over thoroughly and remove and dispose of any that are heavily infested with pests or infected by diseases. Once done, continue as follows…
• Pick over remaining plants removing dead, damaged or discoloured leaves. • Houseplants usually respond well if repotted in late spring or very early summer, so if yours are pot-bound do this now. • When repotting, only move the plants up one pot size and use compost as similar as possible to their current compost. Ensure the compost is free-draining and that there are crocks at the base of the pot. Consider adding additional grit or perlite to improve drainage. • Once repotted, place plants in a cool, relatively stress-free environment for a week or two, away from hot or direct bright sunlight. Keep them adequately watered. • Next, give them a bit of a bath, using wellmoistened kitchen roll or cotton wool to wipe the leaves clean. Many of the more glossy-leaved

houseplants respond well to an application of leaf shine, but not all, so check before you start. Feed houseplants regularly. Choose fertilisers formulated specifically for the plants where possible, or those suitable for foliage or flowering houseplants. Plants that have just been potted on will not require feeding for a couple of months, but both recently replanted and more established houseplants need regular watering. Don’t place plants in too sunny a spot – they can get too hot or suffer from leaf scorching if placed too close to a south- or west-facing window. Most houseplants benefit from being placed in dappled shade in the garden, and they should thrive provided you keep them fed and watered. If treating yourself to new houseplants, make sure that the plant is well-suited to the position that you have lined up for it – it’s tempting to buy those that do well in really sunny situations, but if you only have a fairly shady windowsill it will suffer immensely over the winter months.

Midsummer Meanings By Catherine Rose
Photograph Andrew Dunn, www.andrewdunnphoto.com
T
he month of Wimbledon and Father’s Day; synonymous with freshly mown grass, the first Pimms and a sudden abundance of flowers, we welcome June as the beginning of summer. In Anglo-Saxon times, June was known as midsummer month or sera monath, meaning ‘dry month’. It also brought with it the big pagan celebration of the summer solstice – the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. It was the Romans who were responsible for giving the sixth month in their Roman and our Gregorian calendar its current name. Jun(e) is believed to be a shortened version of Junius - Latin for ‘sacred to Juno’. Juno was the wife of Jupiter and patron goddess of Rome. She was also the goddess of marriage and childbirth. The blessing she was said to bestow on couples who marry during this month has meant that June weddings remain popular to this day. In early Roman times, June had 29 days, but Emperor Julius Caesar added an extra day, making it 30 days long. People born in June are said to be ruled by the planet Mercury, representing youth, and come under the zodiac signs of either Gemini (the twins) or Cancer (the crab). Scientific studies have claimed that June babies tend to be physically stronger and suffer less with mental illnesses than those born in any other month.
88 | Handy Mag | June 2019
June has three birthstones: the pearl, moonstone and the more obscure alexandrite. The birth flowers for this month are the rose and the honeysuckle. There is a saying in folklore that in June, summer doesn’t begin until the elderflower is in blossom. Apart from the summer solstice, other festivals that take place in June include well-dressing, where natural springs are honoured with elaborate decorations that include intricate mosaic-like pictures made using flowers, grasses, moss, seeds, bark and berries. Well-dressing is particularly popular across Derbyshire. The many significant historical events that have happened in the month of June include: the signing of the Magna Carta on 15th June 1215; the infamous Battle of Waterloo on 18th June 1815; the Queen’s coronation on 2nd June 1953; and D-Day, on 6th June 1944. The month of June has long fascinated poets, artists and lyricists from Shakespeare to Rogers and Hammerstein. ‘Flaming June’ is a famous painting by Lord Frederick Leighton completed in 1895. Scottish poet Robert Burns also paid homage to the month in the first lines of his well-known poem ‘A Red Red Rose’. And there is no end of romantic ballads out there rhyming ‘June’ with ‘moon’. Believe it or not, June was a popular name for both boys and girls in the first part of the 20th century but over the last 40-50 years it has declined in favour in the UK. However, June has enjoyed a resurgence as a favourite girls’ name in the USA during the past decade.

Dear Diary… My favourite time of year is here, Summer! I love running through fields with my ears flapping, licking ice cream that has dripped onto the floor, going swimming in the river, sunbathing in the garden and rolling around in freshly cut grass. There are some bad things about summer though, sometimes it’s so hot that I don’t feel like going for a walk. I just want to stay in the shade or lie next to the fan then go for a proper walk in the evening when it gets cooler. There are also lots of flying things around that hurt when you eat them, once one bumped into me and it made my face feel all puffy, I had to have an injection to make it go back to normal! Last year even the water in my water bowl was warm, mum started putting ice cubes in there which made the water much more refreshing after I’d been sunbathing, she also let me have frozen vegetables, yum!

Usually I get to go on work trips in the car with Mummy, but she says I have to stay at the practice so that I don’t get too hot, it’s a shame as I really like going with her. I’ve noticed that she’s been cutting the hairs around my ears and toes, I’d prefer furry toes but apparently, it’s meant to stop grass seeds getting stuck and making my ears and feet sore. Jasper x

RABBIT AWARENESS WEEK By Battle Flatts Vets
I
t’s that time of year again! Fondly known as ‘RAW’, Rabbit Awareness Week is being run nationwide from Saturday 1st June – Sunday 9th June 2019, sponsored by Burgess. As a practice we have a long-standing reputation for treating rabbits and various other ‘exotic’ species. Over the years the number of pet rabbits in the UK has grown significantly, and every week we are welcoming more new patients and clients into our practices.
Battle Flatts Stamford Bridge are also proud to announce they have been awarded the GOLD award for being a Rabbit Friendly Practice – we are now one of only 12 Gold practices in the UK! As part of this, we are joining other practices in RAW’s initiative to ensure all rabbits are vaccinated against both Myxomatosis (Myxy) and Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease virus (RHDV). This includes the highly infectious RHDV-2 strain which has quickly become one of the highest causes of sudden death in domestic rabbits. If you have any concerns or questions regarding RHDV-2 or your rabbits’ general health, please contact any of our four branches to book an appointment. Vaccinations are available at all branches too! To learn more about RAW, please visit our Facebook Page: Battle Flatts Avian and Exotic Services for more information nearer the time
