elcome to the March edition.

It has been a challenging month moving into our new little office. Notwithstanding BT and energy companies we are finally in and settled and able to get to work properly on the Handy Mags this spring. Nicky has been busy getting organised putting together a schedule of local events for the whole year and there is a scary amount of events coming up this spring and summer. Keep reading your Handy Mag to make sure you don’t miss anything important! Our puzzles were more than usually taxing last month as we managed to miss off 3 lines of letters from the wordsearch. I’d like to say sorry to all those people who thought they might be going mad! I usually check the puzzles before going to print but in a post-Christmas brain trauma I obviously didn’t check them well enough. This month whilst you’re trying our puzzles or wondering if you need an eye test as you scour the pages for all 5 of our hidden cartoon characters, take time to look at all of the fabulous local businesses advertising in the magazine. Despite the national news telling us that things are looking brighter, every pound spent locally, whatever the business, really matters. And of course make sure you tell them that you found them in the Handy Mag! Don’t forget that the clocks go forward on Sunday 30th March but most of all don’t forget to show some appreciation for your Mum on the same day!

ELLA...

ON HAVING A NAP Back in nursery school, “nap time” was specifically timetabled into the day; we got tucked up after a long hard hour of finger painting to rest and collect ourselves in preparation for tig, perhaps. Naps were the best. Sadly, for most of us these days are long gone, and having reached maturity our workaholic western culture expects us to man it from morning to evening on full alert. For any normal adult who isn’t retired or ill, napping during the day is immediately assumed to be a sign of laziness and lack of ambition. Strange, considering that insomnia and sleep deprivation are increasingly prevalent in modern times, and are shown to be highly detrimental to health and stress levels. Indeed, we are all quite familiar with the idea of a good rest in order to improve mental and physical health, yet this only seems to apply at night time.

We are in fact among the small percentage of mammals that sleep only once in 24 hours, and it is a relatively novel thing for humankind to do so anyway. The Romans had a daytime sleep “sexta”, at the sixth hour of the day, and this is in fact the etymological route of the Spanish “siesta”. Although apparently this, too, is getting lost thanks to the influence of the west, which is a shame. The alleged benefits of napping appear to be numerous – better memory, higher level of alertness, and perhaps even a decreased blood pressure, lowering the chances of heart disease and other cardio-vascular problems. Not to mention a better mood and therefore increased productivity – nobody can be expected to be able to work on full power if you’re having one of those bleary-eyed types of days, especially when the problem could be fixed with a simple 20 minute snooze. The term “power nap” was coined by Churchill, who was a firm believer in the potential of napping and took one daily. I reckon we need to embrace the concept, and put it back into the average working day – snuggling up is better than struggling on. Perhaps we should all be allowed to bring pillows into school and work, better still some milk… maybe even a bit of relaxing finger painting? Ella 8 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

RIGHT POSTCODE Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church I was late. Then encouraged when I heard ‘Sally’ say, ‘Your destination is on the left!’ The problem was ‘Sally’ was wrong. I was supposed to be at College about to teach a lecture and I was in a cul-de-sac on a Housing Estate! ‘Sally’ is the affectionate name my family gave the irritating voice on the Satellite Navigation System. Usually, ‘Sally’ was reliable, but this time she had got it very wrong, or had she? I refused to use a Sat Nav, probably due to male pride, until it came included free on my mobile phone. At first, I didn’t like how it made me feel, I felt out of control and vulnerable. I vividly remember the first time I took a diversion because the motorway was blocked. I took the exit and heard ‘Sally’ try to comfort me with the words ‘rerouting’, but I had no idea where I was going and suddenly realised I was putting my complete trust in a mobile phone. For a man who is no stranger to the concept of faith, I was shocked at how difficult I found it to trust ‘Sally’ to direct me. It made me realise how hard it is to have ‘faith’ today. We would much rather trust what we can see and touch than have faith in the unknown, to be ‘out of control’ and place our trust in something or someone else. Is this how life is supposed to be lived? In a faithless world is there a danger of losing the excitement of adventure by eliminating all possibility of risk? Making a mistake is never comfortable; there are often consequences and we can end up in the wrong place but this is often when I learn my most important lessons. When I sat in the culde-sac thinking I was lost, I realised that I had entered the wrong postcode, it was my mistake and not ‘Sally’s’ and as soon as I entered the correct postcode the Sat Nav re-routed and ‘Sally’ directed me to the college, just in time. Life is supposed to be an adventure, full of surprise, not risk-averse and free from danger. We need to encourage steps into the unknown, cultivate the heart of the explorer and the confidence to follow. As long as the right postcode has been entered into life’s Sat Nav, it doesn’t matter how many times we have to reroute! If we follow, ‘Sally’ will get us there.

Personal, Professional, dignified, resPectful.

S

everal years of working with undertakers in the area has given Fergus Court the drive, enthusiasm and experience to set up his own funeral service. Fergus is one of the youngest funeral directors in North Yorkshire and at the ripe old age of 25 he has set his career path on the care of the bereaved. “I love my job, and wouldn’t change it for anything” says Fergus. “Funerals are not often discussed but sooner or later everybody needs the services of an undertaker. My aim is to help families by taking on as much of the workload as I can, providing a personal, respectful and dignified funeral service.” “Today there are so many different options when it comes to planning a funeral and everything can be tailored to suit individual wishes. Whether it is a traditional funeral or contemporary, religious or humanist, green or eco-burial, I can advise and guide you through the process, helping you make the right decisions for you and your family.”

Fergus says “I’m really proud of being 100% independent and as part of a small local community that’s really important. At the end of the day the buck stops with me and I will do everything in my power to give your loved one the funeral they deserve. I’d like to thank my family, friends and other local businesses for their fantastic support.” The Handy Mag would like to wish Fergus every success in 2014 with his new business.

Because Fergus’ business is independent it means that he has complete control and is able to make his service more affordable. Fergus Court Funeral Services can work with you to create a funeral which is individual whilst staying within your budget. The cost of funerals can be an extra stress at a very difficult time which is why Fergus Court Funeral Services offers pre-payment funeral plans. Many will feel that it’s not an easy thing to consider in advance but it can remove a lot of upset from loved ones when it comes to funeral planning. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 15

hether or not you plan to sell your car privately or part exchange with a dealer, the number one priority is to make it look as good as possible. Chris Green, owner of Revive! Scarborough mobile bodywork and alloy wheel repair specialist offers these top tips:

• Give your car a good clean inside and out. A

scruffy interior with crisp wrappers, dog hair and crumbs could put off potential buyers and drive down the dealer’s offer. If you don’t have the time or equipment to do it yourself take the vehicle to a car wash service for a full valeting.

• Take a walk around the vehicle to check for

Revive! specialises in repairing minor scuffs and scrapes to vehicle bodywork and alloy wheels. It has the largest accredited network of SMART repairers in the UK and is the first to have ATA accredited technicians. Revive!’s customers include car dealerships, fleet operators and private motorists. Smart repair is a quality, cost effective and time-saving alternative to taking a vehicle to a bodyshop for minor paintwork repairs. Costing far less than most insurance policy excesses, the work is fully guaranteed and carried out at a time and place to suit the customer, minimising vehicle downtime and protecting the owner’s no claims bonus.

cracked headlights and wing mirrors, and replace if necessary.

• If you have minor scratches and scuffs to the

bodywork or alloy wheels ask an accredited mobile bodywork repairer such as Revive! to give you a free estimate for the repairs. For most cars the work will cost less than the weekly shop and your vehicle will be worth considerably more as a result. A prospective private buyer will want to get the best looking car for their money, so if yours is scratch free and at the right price you’ll be on to a winner. Again dealers will factor in the cost of putting the car right into the price they offer you so aim to give them the car as forecourt ready as possible.

MOTORING

HONDA Civic 1.6 i-DTEC SE 5 dr

By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer www.carwriteups.co.uk

W

ITH THE exception of the high performance Type R model, the Honda Civic used to have a rather run-of-themill image. But the 2005 incarnation was radical and sexy enough to change that perception. Now the car has gone ‘under the knife’ again to achieve an even tighter, sharper appearance. The result is an aesthetically pleasing, sporty motor that drives almost as brilliantly as it looks. Inside, the fresh Civic has a more athletic cockpit layout, a redesigned small and chunky steering wheel, as well as cool, blue door lining illumination. The car’s lightweight six speed manual gearbox is slicker than ever, and the gear ratios have been optimised to give higher speed refinement and a more satisfying action. In fact, Honda’s 2012 Civic has moved general driving pleasure up a whole notch. The steering is more direct, thanks to a retuned electric power steering system, and cornering is more precise because of stiffer suspension. This hasn’t affected comfort though. Far from it; the car has improved refinement and a good, stable ride – especially at motorway speeds. Fuel economy is seriously impressive with the 1.6 diesel powered Civic. It returns an average of 78.5 mpg and emits just 94 g/km of CO2.

• Max speed: 129mph • 0-62 mph: 10.5secs • Combined mpg: 78.5 • Engine: 1597 cc 4 cylinder 16 valve turbo diesel • Max. power (bhp): 120 at 4000 rpm • Max. torque (Ib/ft): 221 at 2000 rpm • CO2: 94 g/km • Price: £19,575 on the road For maximum efficiency you can choose to press the green ECON switch on the dashboard. This clever device ensures a very smooth increase in torque (turning power) for a more relaxing drive and less fuel consumption. But of course an engine is at its cleanest when it’s not running at all - that’s why idle stop technology is also fitted. Honda makes cashsaving driving fun too - the Civic’s speedometer illumination changes, depending on how hard your right foot is down, or how long you hang on to the gears. The lighting is blue when the car is idle and stays blue during sudden acceleration and deceleration. It turns to green if you drive it in an economical manner but, in between, bluegreen lighting shows during gentle blips of the throttle. The Civic is generally aimed at the family market so, as you would imagine, space is no issue - especially with Honda’s ‘Magic Seat’ system. Flip up, fold down or recline - you can transform the cabin at the lift of a lever or the push of a button. For example, the rear seats can be folded down completely to give a flat load space which is large enough to carry three

mountain bikes, three large cases or three big golf bags. This is possible even with the front seats in their rearmost position. In SE trim the Civic is a very pleasurable place to be ensconced - particularly if, like me, you spend long periods on the road. Equipment includes electric windows and mirrors, as well as climate control. The up-to-the-minute Civic is indeed a top motor. Made by a company with a legendary reputation for bullet-proof reliability and comfort, the hatchback, although not the quickest in its class, is one of the best looking. And, on top of that, the car is built in Britain alongside its popular siblings, the CR-V and Jazz. You’ll just have to find nearly £20,000 to pay for it – or wait for the new Civic to come on to the used market.

SAVING ORDINARY FOLK MILLIONS OF POUNDS – ALL IN A DAY’S WORK Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner

M

ost people think financial planning is just about managing investments, and yet the most rewarding things we do are nothing to do with investments. So far this year I’ve helped someone claim Attendance Allowance and Carers Allowance, adding almost £7,000 per annum to the family coffers; protected £200,000 of a family’s wealth from attack from the Local Authority in paying for care; saved £160,000 of Inheritance tax instantly for a family by making one very low cost move; protected a client’s £250,000 pension death benefits from Inheritance Tax; solved an elderly couples Inheritance Tax problems for just £50 per month; put insurances in place for a young family which means they don’t have to worry about what happens if they die or are unable to earn an income to pay for everything; moved a dodgy £80,000 investment for clients with a “cautious“ attitude to risk from a very speculative investment. I could go on. And usually do! This is all in a day’s work for professional financial planners. So I was surprised to receive an email from a prospective client the other day saying “I am interested in your article on protecting wealth on death, and would like to make an appointment to see you to discuss this, though I must make it clear that I already have an investment manager who looks after my investments and I’m quite happy with him. However, he doesn’t do Inheritance Tax, Capital Gains Tax or Wealth management.” I don’t get this. I don’t see how an investment manager can ignore the most fundamental aspects of financial planning. The tax wrapper you invest in – that is pension, bond, ISA etc is driven by an individual’s tax status, objectives for the future and attitudes about money. This encompasses every aspect of an individual’s estate – including the value of their

house and pension benefits, the potential inheritance tax and paying for care, risks to income and capital and many other factors. Just managing investments is, in my view, only doing half a job. And one that can’t be done very well given how much these other factors affect the investment strategy. I’ve got FREE copies of my “Wealth Kit” - the step by step blueprint for ensuring you have enough money for retirement, that your money lasts as long as you do, and anything left over ends up with your family, not the government - worth £29.95, to give to the first 20 people who ask for it by 31 March 2014. To get your FREE Family Wealth Kit, including my audio CD “How to find thousands of lost pounds with little-known secrets of the megawealthy”, worth £29.95, call 0330 100 1744, email your details to helen@pen-life.co.uk, go to www.wealth-kit.co.uk, or you can listen to my recorded message on 0800 107 2174.

Make your

Sunday 30th March

Mother’s Day By Alex Albrighton

F

rom the day you have a baby or adopt a child, your life changes forever. People tell you this when you’re pregnant, but it’s only when it happens that you really understand what they mean. Suddenly there’s someone who depends on you entirely. Every decision you make from now on will be based on their needs or desires. Being a mother can be the best of jobs and the worst of jobs. For every heart-warming moment of pride and loveliness, there’s a blazing row or slammed door (but hopefully with a hug and a sorry afterwards). Mums have to take on every role in the family – carer, teacher, agony aunt, sergeant major, personal assistant, taxi driver… And it doesn’t stop when the children leave home. Now approaching 40, I still rely on my mum for advice, friendship, help with childcare, emergency loans and the occasional kick up the backside to get things done. It’s only as you get older, especially if you have children of your own, that you realise how your parents felt as you grew up – why they made you do your homework, go to bed, stop fighting with your brother, eat properly, save money and above all, be careful! Mother’s Day gives us the perfect opportunity to say thank you to our mums for everything they have done and still do for us.

26 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

The founder of Mother’s Day in the US, Anna Jarvis, eventually regretted campaigning to get the day recognised because it became so commercialised. She hated the fact that people would buy a card with a printed message rather than writing a letter. It’s lovely to buy or make a card and give flowers and chocolates. You can also do something special to show you care – maybe take on a job that she hates or treat her to a day of pampering. But this year, why not go beyond the message in the card and write a few personal lines of your own to tell your mother how much you love her. Make sure she knows that she really is the best mum in the world (like mine). Mother’s Day is celebrated all around the world, usually in March or in May. In the UK, it is a mixture of a Christian tradition, and the celebration of motherhood that began in the USA in the early 20th century. During the 16th century, people in service would return to their home or ‘mother’ church on the fourth Sunday in Lent – Mothering Sunday. Mother’s Day as we know it became a regular event in the 1950s, largely thanks to businesses keen to exploit its commercial potential.

Gum Disease and How to Prevent it! Last month I discussed Gum Disease, this month I’d like to give more detail on correct tooth-brushing and cleaning between the teeth. Toothbrushing Angle the bristles of the brush up or down so that they clean under the edge of the gum, Some people have smooth by Christine Parker gums which are easier to clean BDS (GDC 72136) but those that are diseased are often thickened and can trap plaque under their edges. Remember to clean the inside surface near the tongue and palate, behind the lower front teeth is where many people accumulate tartar, a round headed electric brush is particularly useful here. To clean the outside surfaces of the upper molars don’t open too wide.. Close fully put your finger along the outside of your molars and you should be able to touch the back of the last tooth. Now slowly open and you will feel the bone connecting your lower jaw compressing the side your finger. If you open wide to start with it will stop you getting your brush to the back. Work out what degree of opening is most comfortable for you. Interdental cleaning Ideally this should be done every day from the teens onward. Ever wondered why so many Americans have great teeth. They are obsessed with flossing we call it anti-ageing for the gums! Flossing does require dexterity but the more you practice the better you’ll get. Interdental cleaning is best done after the last meal of the day if possible but you will get benefits whatever time of day it’s done. Your gums may bleed to start with but this should stop as your gums become healthier. If you find flossing too difficult there is a huge range of products of varying sizes your dentist will be able to advise you on. For a thorough gum check and personalised advice on oral hygiene please contact:

The overall belief is that, if you look good on the outside, it helps you feel so much better on the inside, therefore increasing your selfesteem and confidence.”

What are the Critical Drivers in Your Business? Running a business is like driving a car. In a car you rely on the ‘dashboard’ to tell you how fast you are travelling, how many revs you are doing, which gear you are in and how much fuel you have in your tank. In business very few business owners I meet know the critical drivers to their business and therefore arrive at their year-end destination wondering why their performance hadn’t been better. So you may be asking, ‘what are the critical drivers in my business?’ Firstly it’s important to keep this really simple by understanding the numbers that impact on the profit that you make. I would recommend that every day you record the number of enquiries for your products or services and the source of each enquiry. (This will help you to establish what marketing is working for you). Then add up how many actually bought from you, which will give you your conversion rate. You should then establish how much they spent with you and be able to work out the average spend per customer. If you’re in retail the easiest way to track your conversion rate is to count the footfall into your store. At the end of the day take number of till transactions and divide by the footfall x 100 to give your % conversion rate. You will also need to establish what your profit is for each sale to double check you are selling and making a profit. Once you know your base numbers you can start to improve your performance by applying new strategies. If you’re stuck for ideas then pick up the phone and have a chat with me - I have over 340 strategies to pick from that will make a difference to your performance and rev up your profits in 2014.

N

eighbourhood Watch (NHW) - sometimes known as Home Watch - is one of the largest voluntary crime prevention initiatives across the country and if you are not already a Member of a Scheme, then I recommend strongly that you give it some serious consideration, as membership reaps many benefits. A partnership exists between North Yorkshire Police Service and North Yorkshire NHW Association – which incorporates Ryedale NHW – whereby there is a commitment to ensure that the City of York and the County of North Yorkshire remain one of the most safest areas in the country to live, work and visit. The aims of NHW are to reduce local opportunities for crime; to establish a community spirit so that everyone can contribute towards the protection of their

property by mutual co-operation and communication: and to inform the Police or the CoOrdinator of any local suspicious activity. But Members of Neighbourhood Watch are not vigilantes and nor do they spend all their time gazing out of windows! Indeed, what NWH does is to encourage neighbours to be less dismissive but more observant and actionorientated as regards what they see happening around them, as manifested in Marton in December when three men were arrested on suspicion of criminal activity after their car - wanted by the Police - was spotted by NHW parked in the village! NHW Areas can be large (covering a whole village such as Normanby) or they might involve just a few houses, as at Cartoft. Each NHW Scheme is led by a volunteer Co-Ordinator. These are people who receive Messages from the Police concerning crime activities/

Door step crime is one of the most disturbing, challenging and unwanted criminal activities that we face at present as these door-to-door “salespersons” are often collecting intelligence for future criminal activity. NHW offers help to vunerable residents with its Nominated Neighbour Scheme that helps them to stop bogus callers – further details of this Scheme and other features, with details of Police surgeries, Community and Police Meetings etc can be found on www.ryedalenhwa. co.uk which contains a tremendous amount of useful information. So you can see just how wide ranging and beneficial NHW Areas can be and anyone wishing either to join their local NHW Scheme or interested in creating a new NHW Area are invited to call myself on 01751 432811 and I will take matters forward relative to where you live. Terry Wallis is the Area CoOrdinator for Kirkbymoorside and surrounding villages, having been Co-Ordinator for Marton village for several years – he won the 2013 Ryedale Neighbourhood Watch CoOrdinator of the Year Award.

ON YOUR PLOT Gain the upper hand now!

Spring should really be on it’s way by the end of this month and there’ll be plenty of jobs to keep you busy on your plot. Weather permitting the soil should be warm enough to be sowing outdoors in March. Your new seedlings will need all the help that you can give them if they are to flourish so don’t forget the weeding and pest control too!

JOBS FOR MARCH:

• Prepare beds for sowing by raking level when the soil is dry enough. • Get a supply of containers and fill with compost ready for sowing (supermarket plastic trays containers are handy to reuse for this!) • Make sure you have all the seeds you need and sort them into the order that you’ll sow them in. • Plant first early potatoes later in the month. • Keep on top of the weeding and pest control. • Sow carrots, peas, parsnips, lettuce and radishes. There’s no doubt that the weather during the first part of the year lived up to our expectations of a month of extremes - with mild temperatures and homes and gardens hammered by incredible rainfall. Hopefully March should see the weather settling down and spring truly starting to emerge. Most seed packets give you some guidelines as to which month/or months are best to sow in but personally I think that it’d be a lot more helpful if they gave a little information about the temperature required, not to mention just how long germination is likely to take. Soil temperatures of at least 6º are needed for most seeds - if you don’t want to guess at this you can get a soil thermometer to check. Don’t forget that by using products such as fleece, or cloches, over your beds you can raise the temperature. Some seeds, such as parsnips, are notoriously slow to germinate taking up to 3 weeks for seedlings to appear - a good idea with slow starters like these is to sow quick growing crops such as radishes on either side of the row. This will help mark the rows out until your parsnips appear and the radishes will quickly be grown and ready to harvest. Take note also of the depth that the different seeds 44 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

should be sown at too shallow and they’ll either blow away or be eaten by the birds, too deep and you may bury them alive! Try to space seeds evenly, though if you sow too many you can thin out the weaker seedlings after they appear. Do remember that with many crops it is better to sow just a few and then sow again in a few weeks time to avoid having too many ready to harvest all at once. As the soil warms up for your new crops so it also warms up nicely for the weeds! Many people prefer organic methods of pest control. Little and often is best - take a quick walk around the veg patch each morning and hand pick any emerging weeds. Hoeing also works well and if you are careful not to let weeds set seed you’ll avoid a long-term problem. Of course the situation isn’t helped by the fact that your patch is likely to have large amounts of bare soil on it between widely spaced rows at this time of year. Some crops, such as potatoes will obligingly grow to ultimately block out the light and deter weeds, but if you’re really having problems then think about putting down a thick, organic, mulch to cover the bare soil. Slugs will also emerge to attack your young seedlings - there’s no end of organic ways to do battle from hand picking at night and beer traps to watering in nematodes. Strike early and gain the upper hand!

KIRKBYMOORSIDE ENVIRONMENT GROUP

WHY IS A COMMUNITY PROJECT NOT LIKE A BLACKBERRY? ‘It’s always the same few people who do things’ – that’s what they say, isn’t it? Whether it’s InBloom Groups, Summer Fêtes, Scouts, Christmas Fayres, or campaigns about anything from bike tracks and buses to new supermarkets and fracking – if you look at who’s doing most of the work, the same names crop up again and again. Well, thank goodness they do, in a way, because it’s thanks to these stalwarts that most of our local events even happen. The trouble is, though, that it’s so easy for us all to take it unthinkingly for granted, as if Junior Football was something that just turns up effortlessly in September as part of the mystic cycles of nature, like blackberries. It’s only when Junior Football isn’t available, and you have to set it up for your own kids, that you realise how much work it involves. It’s ironic, too, that the harder you work for your local cause, and the better the result looks, the more outsiders will assume that whatever-it-is is doing fine and doesn’t need their help. Here at Kirkbymoorside Environment Group (KMEG), I think we’re a prime example. I’ve written before – both here and on our website (see link below) about some of KMEG’s work, but I suspect that it all just helps to create an image of us as this great cohort of people all working together like a well-oiled machine doing stuff, whereas actually each project depends heavily on two or three people. So here’s where we get to the nitty-gritty, because we need more people to join in with developing our work! What about being part of our Fruit Pickers project, for example, picking unwanted fruit and turning it into juice and preserves to sell for community fundraising? Or campaigning for a Ryedale cycle trail? Promoting our green energy co-operative? Helping to set up a Community Interest Company for a reborn Moorsbus? Thermal imaging? Litter-picking? Helping with social media? If you live near Kirkby, please lend us a hand. Pretty please? Erica Rose (07791 539552) www.kms-environmentgroup.org.uk 48 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

RYEDALE DOG RESCUE After a difficult winter that has seen the rescue stretched to its financial limits in order to rescue as many dogs as possible, spring is almost upon us and our team of volunteers are gearing up for a hectic year of fundraising. As ever we are looking for new volunteers to join us in helping to raise funds, so this year we have organised a volunteers get together on 8th March 11 - 1pm at the WRVS in Pickering. Come and have a cuppa and some cake and find out how you can help us this year. Without fundraising we cannot help dogs like Millie and Jack below.

DOG OF THE MONTH - MILLIE Millie is a 5 year old rough coated terrier while Jack is a 6 year old smooth coat. They have always lived together and we are reluctant to part them. When taken into the pound Jack had to be treated for an allergic reaction to flea bites which left his skin very sore and resulted in patches of hair loss. He is now much more comfortable and his hair is growing back. Millie is a real busy little girl who loves everyone.

Ryedale Dog Rescue have a strict non-destruction policy, so we will never put a dog down unless our vet tells us that it is necessary and this means they can be with us for some time.

If you would like to find out more about Millie please call Rosie on 07581 324153. Have a look at the events section at the back of the Handy Mag for details of all our fundraising events this month.

Our motto is “Saving one dog may not change the world, but the world will certainly change for that one dog.”

For more information on the rescue, the dogs we currently have for adoption and how you can help please visit www.ryedaledogrescue.com or join Ryedale Dog Rescue on Facebook.

I’M SPARTACUS Celia Carr RVN Station House Vets

M

y name is Spartacus. I live in Strensall. I am a big, black, handsome and intelligent specimen of the feline species. I strut about the streets gaining respect everywhere I go, but I have a secret! I was not always called Spartacus, until recently I have gone by the name ‘Mish Mish’ cruelly shortened by my owner to Mishy Moo and sometimes-even MOO MOO!!!!! Imagine my embarrassment when she summonsed me loudly from the back door, cooing ‘Mishy moooOOOOHHHh, where are yooOOOUUUUu? MOOOOOEEEEY!’ I would be happily strutting my stuff showing everyone what a fine specimen I was, when all of a sudden I would hear that! In horror I was forced to look around me and see who was about, if I was lucky, there was nobody and I could make a mad dash for the house before anyone realised she was talking to me. Other times I was less lucky and I would have to casually saunter around the cul-de -sac pretending she wasn’t referring to me, whilst looking accusingly at the other cats as though they were the one with the stupid name and hoping to goodness she would not come out of the house and TOUCH ME. Often by the time I had wandered around nonchalantly waiting for the coast to clear I’d get home to find the other cats had eaten all MY dinner. Thankfully we recently moved to a house with cat flaps so I can come and go as I please and no longer need to be called. As a result I am now introducing myself to the new neighbours as Spartacus. A down side to the move is that I have lost my six other dinners that I used to receive daily from our old neighbours, much to the relief of my owner. I

52 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

love food but my owner says I love food too much and that I need to lose weight. I decided she may be right as I often got a bit stuck in the cat flap which has not been a very pleasant experience as my bottom was open to the elements whilst I tried to manoeuvre myself in a carefree manner so nobody noticed that I was in fact STUCK. As I result I have made a conserted effort over the last couple of months not to eat the other cats dinners and I have tried to be more active and despite licking the empty food bowl longingly, I have lost weight. This has not gone unnoticed by my owner. As a vet nurse she is never satisfied. First I was fat and needed to diet and now I have lost weight she has shipped me off to Station house Vets, her place of work, to be examined for weight loss! I do not like cat boxes, nor do I like cars, or being refused breakfast. And I certainly do not like being weighed, prodded, put in a kennel, looked at and having people comment rudely on my weight! They touched my feet. (A no no in any cats language) checked my blood pressure, took my heart rate, checked my TEMPERATURE which I will not ever ever be having done again, all I will say on that little humiliation was it was far far worse than having my feet touched or getting stuck in the cat flap! I had blood taken from my neck, urine taken directly from my bladder (I say taken as I did not consent to this). They took blood from my ear by pricking it to check my glucose levels and then palpated my abdomen, (another no touch area). Apparently I needed a full health check due to my recent weight loss, my age (I’m eight, which is rudely classed as mature) and the fact I’m always searching for food, (I’m hungry and dissatisfied as I’m on a diet!!!) I spent the rest of the day making my thoughts known and only perked up when I received my belated breakfast. My owner came bounding in happily to share the good news that I was all healthy and what a clever puss I was for losing weight. I did not share her enthusiasm for telling me what I already knew. I turned my back on her lifted my tail in the air, gave it a good flick (cat swear word!) and left the room making it absolutely clear I would not forgive her until tea time!

A GOOD READ By Kath Bennett

My Autobiography

Mary Poppins

Everyone knows who Alex Ferguson is – controversial, yes, but without doubt the most successful football manager of modern times. On its release, this became one of the fastest selling football books of all time, with fans queuing at midnight to get their hands on a copy. Headlines were made by Ferguson’s pronouncements on the quality of his own players and those who starred for other teams. Shortly afterwards, the book hit the headlines when readers discovered a number of factual errors in the text. Bearing all of that in mind, should you buy a copy?

Have you read Mary Poppins? I know, you’ve seen the film, but have you read the books on which it is based? I would have sworn that I had, but very recently discovered that it wasn’t the case - and what a fabulous surprise!

Alex Ferguson

PL Travers

If you are a Manchester United fan, then the answer is that you probably have one already. If not, what will you get? The book mainly focuses on Ferguson’s last seasons in charge at Old Trafford, and his final year in particular, with some detailed rundowns of key games. In between, there are chapters devoted to memorable friends and adversaries – notably Roy Keane, David Beckham, Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho. Ferguson tells a good story, and as you might expect, he has a huge stock of anecdotes about his time in charge. He also shows an encyclopaedic knowledge of the game and offers a real insight into the scouting and signing process at a Premier League club. However, if you have read any of the articles published at the time the book was released, chances are that you have heard the best tales already, and certainly the best lines. The chapter on Keane is a prime example – the argument in the changing room is undoubtedly dramatic, but comes as no real surprise. The now legendary boot-kicking incident with Beckham is equally familiar, and offers no great insight. I bought this hoping to learn something new about what makes Ferguson tick and how he achieved his phenomenal success. I finished it rather disappointed, feeling that I hadn’t found out a great deal – other than the general message that if Fergie is not always right, then he is 99% of the time. For the fans, a must. For the general reader, maybe not.

54 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Admittedly, most of us new to the books will read them with Julie Andrews squarely in our minds and why not? There will also be moments which are very familiar, such as taking tea with the table in the air and strolling through the paintings with Bert. However because the first book is really a collection of short stories tied together – some of those stories will be delightfully new. The best thing about Mary Poppins is her capacity to surprise, from her magic medicine bottle to her collection of tales for every occasion. She may be temperamental, but it is easy to see why the children in the story adore her - and young readers will too.

RYEDALE LIONS CASH BOOST HELPS YOUNG AND OLD

T

wo Ryedale charities will be able to provide much-needed help and support for both young and old thanks to generous public donations collected by Ryedale Lions Club. Ryedale Carers Support and Ryedale Special Families will benefit from £2,000 each following the Lions Club’s Christmas sleigh tour of Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering and surrounding villages. “This is much more money than we ever expected,” said Claire Hall, manager of Ryedale Carers Support. “It will be put to good use in looking after carers and elderly people living alone in Ryedale.” “An increasing number of them are being encouraged to stay in their own homes so our service is much in demand. Ryedale Carers Support has 129 volunteers helping more than 250 families in Ryedale. You cannot underestimate the impact one volunteer can have on the quality of life of carers and older people in our community, particularly in enabling full-time carers to take a short break and recharge their batteries.” Lisa Keenan, Resources Manager for Ryedale Special Families, said: “This is fantastic news – an amazing amount of money which will make a huge difference to the local families we support who have children and young adults with disabilities and special needs. “We will use our £2,000 to help ensure our programme of family activities goes ahead this year to help develop friendships and foster mutual support between families. “It is one of the most popular areas of our work and sessions are regularly attended by up to 100 parents and children where the whole family can

62 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

enjoy spending time together - including many sporting activities such as swimming, ice skating and outdoor pursuits.” The Ryedale Lions Santa tour raised nearly £6,500 and the remaining money will be used to support other good causes supported by the Club during the year. “We are indebted to all those who kindly gave donations on our tour. We are delighted to use the money to support such worthwhile local causes as these. We can confidently say that every penny of the money raised will benefit many of those in our society most in need of it,” said Ryedale Lions President, Vic Hall.

LOCAL CANCER SUPPORT GROUP RE-NAMED R

yedale Cancer Support and Social Group is celebrating eleven years of offering support to people in Pickering and Ryedale who have been affected by cancer, and are launching a new name and logo which better reflect the friendly and social side of its activities. The group meets on the third Tuesday of the month and from April will move to the relaxed and friendly surroundings of the WRVS Centre, Hungate, Pickering, meeting from 2.15pm to 4.15pm. The exciting new package of support includes plans for a programme of speakers covering a wide variety of topics and there are also plans for some social activities out of the scope of the usual monthly meeting, to allow people to socialise, share interests and to enjoy life. friend, at any stage of the cancer journey, is welcome to come along and meet others who have had personal experience and can offer mutual support.

in future and hope to find more volunteers to help us carry this out. We would also welcome donations towards our efforts”.

Although the group is not there to provide medical advice, people can share advice and experiences, and also access a variety of information about different types of cancers from Macmillan Cancer Support. The group is also able to signpost people to relevant support agencies should they need specialist advice or support.

One member of the group said “Having had cancer on two occasions you really appreciate the skill of medical professionals but it is perhaps as important to have a layperson to help you through the experience. It is also essential for your close relatives to be able to discuss their concerns and gain comfort and support when they can feel so alone and helpless”.

Group chair person Jean Simpson said “ We are pleased to be celebrating 11 years of support, friendship and advice to people affected by cancer in Pickering and Ryedale. We welcome new members to the group and our relaxed approach allows them to drop-in to our sessions as they wish. Although we only meet once each month we plan to hold more sessions

The group will meet at Pickering Library from 10.30am to 12.30pm on the Tuesday 18 February and 18 March then move to the WRVS Centre, Hungate, Pickering on Tuesday 15 April from 2.15pm to 4.15pm. For more information please come to one of our sessions or email: peterja66@yahoo. co.uk

14, 15, 16 MARCH 2014. THE MILTON ROOMS, MALTON, NORTH YORKSHIRE

T

he Yorkshire Cajun & Zydeco Festival is fast establishing itself in the calendar for enthusiasts from all over Britain and Europe. It is also introducing this fabulous Louisiana music, dance and entire culture to a local public who may otherwise not come across one of the best kept secrets of the music and dance world. After two highly successful festivals, this year’s promises to be bigger and better still with great bands, dance and music workshops and Cajun food. Plus, new for this year, the chance to experience an authentic Louisiana Mardi Gras celebration as the Milton Rooms will be transformed on the Sunday (16th March) with banners, bunting and beads and festivalgoers will be encouraged to dress up and wear costumes and masks!

The line-up of live bands is now complete: Visiting us from Europe is fabulous young Dutch band - FRONT ROW ZYDECO. After their brilliant performance last year, Phil Underwood brings his band COLIN AND THE CRAWFISH back to Yorkshire. British Cajun & Zydeco star Gavin Lewery makes his debut at our festival with two of his bands LITTLE EASY and CHANKY CHANK. Returning again is our very own local band THE WANDERING ACES. Performing on our special Mardi Gras Sunday we have the highly visual and entertaining ROUGH CHOWDER. Finally, something of a scoop, making their UK festival debut – a brand new Cajun band from Scotland we have BLUEBELL CAJUN DANCE BAND. Once again a ‘star’ of the festival will be the Milton Rooms itself, with its great sprung dance floor and plenty of room for dancers and those who like to sit and watch the bands and the dancing.

Full details of bands, programme and anything else you may want to know can be found on the website www.yorkshirecajun.com or telephone 07786 040734 66 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
