W
elcome to the May edition.
It is at this time of year I feel most grateful we live in Ryedale. Walking and driving around our rural landscape, spring is evident everywhere, in the buds of the hedgerows and the swallows swooping overhead and the sound of the ice cream van in the village. With longer days and better weather, it is also the time when there is so much more to do: from gardens to DIY to ambling along a country lane followed by an early evening drink in a village pub. Ah bliss! Not to mention the big events in our area this year, along with many regular local festivals and fetes. As ever you can catch them in your Handy Mag. The Malton Food Festival this May has a star line-up; Malton is unquestionably a go to place for food. There’s the Incredible Spice Men (cover photo) along with Jean Christophe Novelli and the Chiappa Sisters. Having JeanChristophe Novelli in Malton has sent Nicky’s head in a spin! She’s offered to work that day on the off-chance that he may visit the Handy Mag office and take her out for lunch! This is also the time at home that my two young adults once again enter the midst of exams and revision. With 2 years between them it seems like a GCSE or an AS/A level exam is always to-hand. Good luck to all students taking exams this spring. You will look back on them as I do – a complete blur, kind of fun and worth it in the end. Having had a couple of comments from readers who have dropped their competition entries to the office this month, we have decided to put in the answers for the last edition (p74). I’m sorry those little blighters are so difficult to find! I hope we’ve made it a bit easier this month! Well done to Mrs Foster of Wombleton for winning the March competition. Until next time…

A WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY HAS OPENED IN PICKERING: PROLINE WINDOWS HAS JUST REVAMPED ITS SHOWROOM AT THORNTON ROAD INDUSTRIAL ESTATE.
P
roline Windows, owned by Dave Morrison, has offered customers in Ryedale and beyond excellent quality windows, doors and conservatories for over 18 years.
Dave said: “Our work is recommended throughout the area, so we are a company you can trust. By investing in our new-look showroom, we are showing our customers the dedication we have to our craft.”
is a way of reducing household bills through effective insulation.
Dave and his team of dedicated professionals have years of experience between them, offering the complete service from planning through to installation, with first rate followup care.
After a long winter, spring is an ideal time to think about replacing windows, doors and even building a conservatory ready for the summer. The showroom gives customers a chance to see how their conservatory could look, with a variety of styles on show.
With GRP or Sarnafil-assured flat roof systems, areas such as conservatories, porches, garages, dormer roofs and bay window roofs can become resistant to UV damage, and to extremes of hot or cold temperatures. Use of these two products helps create a watertight yet attractive finish.
Dave explained: “Our upgraded showroom indicates the level of professionalism of the Proline team. Perfection is paramount in our industry, ensuring excellent standards from start to finish. We have invested in our showroom to show customers old and new the level of excellence in our product portfolio.” Customers also get peace of mind with Proline’s workmanship: the 10-year warranty and the 25-year product guarantee gives reassurance that their work is of the highest standard.
Conservatories not only provide additional living space, but can also increase the value of a home, provided they are fitted by professionals such as Proline. Proline Windows can also help with other aspects of home improvement, such as triple glazing and flat roof care. A way of helping insulate a home is to use triple glazing in windows, helping reduce expensive heat loss, and also providing soundproofing against road noise. Dave said: “While many people have double glazing, triple glazing
Many homes will have at least one flat roof in its build, and as flat roofs are notorious for leaking, then Proline can help.”
Dave said: “Our homes are our most prized possession, and constant care and improvement can help keep a home warm and secure. We use an antisnap locking system, which can be added to already-installed fixtures and fittings in order to deter the burglars.” So give the new showroom a visit, be inspired and ask the Proline team to help improve and transform your home today.

TO ANNUITISE OR NOT TO ANNUITISE – Wilson, Straight talking THAT IS THE QUESTION Julie Chartered Financial Planner fluctuate depending on the performance of the underlying investment. And it’s not all about risk either. Death benefits, spouse’s pensions, inflation and a whole host of other factors need to be considered. And just because you can take what you like from your pension doesn’t mean you should. After all, what are you going to do with it? Let’s say you have a pension worth £100,000. After 25% tax free cash, you’ll have £75,000 left. So you take it all out. You’ll have to pay tax on it – some at 20% and some at 40%. And then what? You put it in the bank? Really? So you’re going to take it out of a tax free environment, pay tax on it, and then invest it in a taxable environment. Or maybe you’ll buy a lamborghini? And live on fresh air for the rest of your life? It’s just plain bonkers.
Y
ou’ll have no doubt heard about Osborne’s “shock announcement” in the Budget that, with effect from April 2015, “no one will have to buy an annuity.” Well, I have a shock announcement too. No-one has had to buy an annuity for almost 20 years. The requirement to annuitise – that is, swap your pension pot for an income for life - was introduced by the Finance Act 1956. In 1995, in response to falling annuity rates, “Income Drawdown” was introduced as an alternative. Drawdown involves taking an “income” roughly equivalent to an annuity directly from your pension pot. The rest stays invested. There’s a huge difference between annuity and drawdown. If you buy an annuity you buy a “guaranteed income for life”. If you drawdown, your pension pot and potential future income will
The factors that need to be considered as you approach retirement haven’t changed. You need to work out how much you want to live on and what’s important to you, given your own personal circumstances, and then figure out the most tax efficient way of going about it. (Just for the record, I think this whole pension liberation thing has fiasco written all over it. There’ll have to be some major changes to current pension rules for it to work as Osborne outlined. We’ll be following the consultation very closely. Watch this space!)
If you want a FREE no nonsense chat about how to make sure your money lasts as long as you do and that anything left over goes to your family and not the Government, call us today and we can outline your options, the pros and cons of the different routes, and help you figure out what’s best for you.

Men like cars, girls hate sport, Northerners are friendly, Southerners are wimps, the French are romantic and blondes are dumb; apart from potentially offensive, terrible stereotypes! We are quick to generalise about people and put them in a box. It is often unfair and leaves little room for unique flare and individualism. When it comes to stereotypes, sadly, it is often the media that are the worst; I haven’t seen a ‘normal’ vicar on TV yet, have you? Often, prior to taking a first assembly in a school, I would quite rightly be asked a few probing questions by a teacher or the Head teacher to make sure that I wasn’t a nut and wouldn’t say anything inappropriate! I think this is very sensible, especially when we see how Christians are portrayed in the media, but once I ended up having a conversation I never expected that went like this: “So, you’re a Pastor of a Pentecostal church?” the teacher questioned, “Yes I am, but not everyone has heard of Pentecostals...” Before I had finished my sentence she interrupted with, “I’ve heard of Pentecostals” she said reassuringly, “I’ve seen them on the Telly.” Hearing a slightly agitated tone in her voice I nervously asked, “What have you seen on the Telly?” Again, without taking a breath, she continued, “Are you like the one on the Telly?” Quickly I asked, “Why?”, “Because he kills people!” Well, I started to laugh and laugh, until I realised the teacher wasn’t laughing at all! I suddenly realised she was dead serious. She had been following the EastEnders storyline of Lucas Johnson, a black Pentecostal Pastor who, despite his religious convictions, left his ex-wife to die then murdered his new girlfriend’s ex-husband before strangling her! Although an amusing, but extreme example, the stereotype images the media presents of Vicars and Christians can make my job quite hazardous. Can I assure you, I have not yet met a Vicar like the Vicar of Dibley, or the Rev Ashley Thomas from Emmerdale or the Pentecostal serial killer on EastEnders. There are the few ‘odd’ ones but the majority are ‘normal’ people, although I suppose it does depend on your definition of normal! There is one thing I think I have learnt in my job as a Minister: never jump to conclusions, people are all unique and we do them and ourselves an injustice when we judge a book by its cover!

Environmental Easaway Environmental is delighted to announce we have added a comprehensive commercial cleaning section to our impressive company portfolio. With a brand new website launched in January 2014 and the introduction of new employees, the last few months have been very exciting for the company. Our commercial cleaning service not only includes the standard expected options such as window cleaning, office cleaning and kitchen cleaning, but also a plethora of specialised services. These include life of grime cleans, crime scene cleaning and trauma cleaning, custody cell sanitation, hazardous waste removal and raw sewerage contamination cleans. As a result of our specialist cleaning services, we have already begun working with respected organisations, notably Leeds City Council and Yorkshire Housing. Recent projects include life of grime cleans at city centre locations where speed, quality and impeccable professionalism are required. Life of grime cleans essentially turn a house which has rubbish, waste, broken pipes, leaking taps and much more back into a home for a new council tenant. Often these cleans involve lots of ripping out of items and an awful smell but the job satisfaction that comes with being able to give someone a new home outweighs any horrific stench or sights. Company Secretary Tracey Phillips is delighted at the recent growth commenting: “This is another great step forward for Easaway Environmental. Being able to help other companies be more productive is something which we are all excited by and the job satisfaction that comes with that makes it exciting times for the whole company.” Easaway is able to offer one-off or provide a regular cleaning package for your office, commercial or industrial unit, so, if you are looking for a company who can work around your requirements, cause little disruption and provide that spotless clean, consider Easaway Environmental and call 0800 0830 617. 12 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

THE FAMOuS SlIngSBy SCARECROW WEEkEnD takes place on Saturday 3rd, Sunday 4th and Monday 5th May at this picturesque Ryedale village.
S
lingsby, which lies six miles west of Malton, is famous for its annual Scarecrow Weekend, which includes an exciting Scarecrow Trail. The popular village also has its own well-known landmark - an impressive maypole, which is placed in the middle of the village green. The current maypole has been in place since 1985, although it’s had several predecessors, with a history dating back to the early 1700s. On May Day, maypole dancing is still carried out today, a community tradition in keeping with the agricultural history and landscape surrounding Slingsby. Along with maypole dancing, the Slingsby Scarecrow Weekend is another village event which commences 12 noon on Saturday 3rd May, when scarecrows will be on display around the village, helping raise funds for the Friends of Slingsby School.
14 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Helpful Scarecrow Trails are just £1 from Robin Hood Caravan Park, in Tony’s Village Shop and at Slingsby School Reading Rooms, from 12noon on Saturday 3rd May until 4pm Monday 5th May. Everyone who buys a trail votes for their favourite scarecrow, with prizes to be won.
“Slingsby and the surrounding parish has a wonderful history, of which the Scarecrow Weekend is a fairly recent addition. Visitors never fail to be amazed by the many facets of Slingsby, from its church to its castle, and from its farming hinterland to its events calendar!
2013’s Scarecrow ‘guests’ included ‘Del Boy’ from the BBC TV comedy series, ‘Only Fools and Horses’, just one of over 30 scarecrows made by the people of Slingsby.
“So much time and effort goes into the event, we really look forward to seeing the results. Each year, we hope it brings lots of visitors to the area to enjoy this popular event and make the most of our lovely village.
Rebecca Palmer-Bunting, Chairperson of Friends of Slingsby School, says: “It’s a real community effort when the Scarecrow Weekend comes around. “We always have great entries each year, and to help people make the most of the event, we have put together our Scarecrow Trail, which helps guide people around the various scarecrow designs.
“Of course, Slingsby village has many other events taking part during the year, and our website, www.slingsbyvillage.co.uk, includes a full listing, along with lots of other information.” You can also find out more about Friends of Slingsby School on www.slingsbyschool.org

his National Charitable organisation will shortly celebrate our 50th Jubilee and was awarded The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Award for volunteering 2012. We have 550 groups nationally and we have 37 groups in Yorkshire, with one in Ryedale covering Malton and Pickering. As an organisation we run small, monthly, Sunday afternoon tea friendship groups which make a real difference to everyone involved. Our small teams of monthly drivers and our older guests share friendship, conversation and laughter, all bringing joy to others throughout the year. The small group of older guests and their drivers are welcomed into the home of a different local host each month for a couple of hours for afternoon tea. The groups bring people of all ages together, developing friendships and support networks and give everyone something to look forward to each month. The Ryedale group has been running for over 10 years. In April one of our guests turned 100 years old! Although we have some yearly hosts we are in need of a few more to spare just one Sunday afternoon a year – you just need easy access and downstairs toilet facilities. We also need one or two more monthly drivers to collect one or two guests on the way and then stay at the tea party and enjoy the whole afternoon. Everyone really looks forward to each month – can you help to continue to make a real difference either by hosting an afternoon tea party once a year, or helping with driving either monthly or as a reserve driver? AT CASTLE HOWARD Duty comes in many forms, and aristocratic men and women have responded to this call in various ways: military, political, religious, and social. Generations of Howard sons went to fight overseas, but the impact of war was often more powerfully felt at home: bereavement and loss were shared by the Howard family, staff and tenants, and their stories are now told in a commemorative exhibition, Duty Calls: Castle Howard in Time of War Illustrated with documents and photographs, Duty Calls tells various stories from WWI and WWII, including: Rosalind, the 9th Countess, refusing to make Castle Howard available to the military in September 1914; the story of her son Geoffrey commanding a fleet of London buses in Belgium that ferried troops to the front (blind in one eye he was not able to fight in the trenches); the tragic death of his younger brother Michael at Passchendaele in 1917; and most surprising of all, the extraordinary diary of Private James Prest from his time as a prisoner of war in 1918, generously loaned by his son John who lives in Coneysthorpe. There is also a reminder that life went on as normal despite the conflict - when the house was a school the headmistress asked for modifications to be made to the house whilst occupied by so many pupils in the same week as thousands of British troops were lying exhausted on the beaches of Dunkirk awaiting evacuation. 18 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Due to the wealth of material discovered in the archive at Castle Howard, some of the stories did not make the exhibition, including the touching episode of how the estate horses were requisitioned by the army in 1914, with the request by the agent that the children’s ponies be returned after the conflict. These stories will now be shared in a new commemorative event Duty Calls: Share Our Story on Sunday 4th and Monday 5th May 2014, when visitors will be invited to find out more about the impact of war on the estate, and watch the story of the horses commandeered for the war effort in The Final Charge. There will also be a display of vehicles from the period, traditional fairground rides and music hall style entertainment.
THE EXHIBITION DUTY CALLS: Castle Howard in Time of Wa r is on display in the house unt November, with admissiilonSunday 2nd the ticket price. A book to included in complement the exhibition is due to be pub lished during May. Find out more at www.castlehoward.co .uk

“It was Antonio Carluccio who dubbed Malton Yorkshire’s Food Capital several years ago and, since then, the town has emerged as a foodie destination for all who care about where their food comes from. There is now a year-round list of foodie activities and events. The Malton Cookery School opens on May 16th in the old congregational chapel on Saville Street – a new Temple to Yorkshire Gastronomy! On the second Saturday each month, the award-winning Malton Monthly Food Market is busier than ever and the Made in Malton producers’ scheme is doing great too. In fact, if you haven’t visited the new Brass Castle Brewery (just off Yorkersgate) please do, it is fab! “The town’s flagship foodie event is, of course, the annual Food Lovers Festival and this year’s dates are Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th May 2014. Patrons include Jean-Christophe Novelli, the nation’s favourite French chef; BBC stars the Incredible Spice Men; and the glamorous Welsh-Italian Chiappa Sisters who featured on Channel 4. They, along with fantastic local Yorkshire chefs, will be giving live cooking demonstrations as well as providing cookery master classes for small classes of eight (tickets required). There is a huge new festival bar, family entertainment, a new music stage and last, but not least, 160 stalls sporting the finest Yorkshire produce and street food. “The Festival is hailed as one of the premier festivals of the north and is free to visit! For more information or to reserve tickets, visit www. maltonyorkshire.co.uk.”

NEW FOR 2014! Unique and innovative Photographic Healing Days and Retreats. We believe that everyone has a unique look and that they are more beautiful than they think they are - rather than disempowering themselves by worrying about their differences, they should be rejoicing in their uniqueness. We help people to embrace that they are perfect just as they are. Combining our professional photographic skills with our transformational healing and therapeutic skills allows us to offer a unique practical healing solution that will assist an individual participant (we only have one person on a Photographic Healing Day or Retreat) who is overtly shy, or has poor self image issues together with low self confidence and esteem. The day includes: A consultation to assess their individual requirements • A transformational healing and reprogramming session to help change the way they think about themselves A personal development session to change their understanding • A full body healing massage to transform the way that they feel about their body • A studio photographic session to help them to change the way that they perceive themselves, plus an album with 10 prints This also assists those who are simply too shy to go and enjoy themselves on holiday; or are camera shy and would prefer not to be; or perhaps they have a special occasion coming up that requires them to be photographed and would like to be more relaxed so they can enjoy the event.

Top Tips from a dental professional
Giving Your Child Good Teeth For Life. Part 2 The health of your childs ‘baby’ teeth is just as important as their permanent ones. Your baby will by Christine Parker normally start to develop teeth BDS (GDC 72136) around 6 months however this varies. As soon as they are coming through it’s important to clean them, as a creamy layer of plaque will develop. Make brushing fun - you don’t want a battle every day! A good technique is to sit your baby in your lap, facing away, with their head into your chest so you can look down onto their teeth. Gently pull the lower lip down until you can see the teeth to clean them. There are lots of different brushes, choose a small soft one, or use a piece of gauze when there are just a few teeth. Gently brush or wipe the teeth praising all the time and use just a smear of toothpaste. Then a big cuddle at the end! As a qualified dentist I have no objection to a clean dummy as these will eventually be discarded unlike their thumbs! Never dip the dummy in anything. The hydration of your baby should be in order of preference, breast milk, formula then plain boiled water. Drinks in ‘shoot’ style bottles or with a teat/ spout mean the front teeth are bathed in acidic or sugary liquid. This is particularly harmful if the child has the drink ‘on demand’ or during the night. When teething your baby may experience pain and tenderness in the mouth and may drool excessively a stick of peeled, cold carrot or a cold teething ring can numb the area and help bring relief. Between 6 and 18 months your baby is most likely to try new foods. Aim for a balanced diet and keep sweet foods as a weekend treat. Baby food manufacturers encourage you to give your child a pudding (it doubles their profits). Take your baby to the dentist with you, we love to see them, even if they cry. They will get used to coming, so when it’s their turn for a check it will be familiar to them.

Preventing Gardening Strains Spring is here, and green-fingered folks will be dusting off the trowels and looking forward to another growing season. Melanie Clark, Doctor of Chiropractic at The Clinic, Malton, for nine years, is a keen gardener, and can help gardeners avoid injury. Melanie explained: “Chiropractic specialises in musculo-skeletal problems. While prevention is better than cure, we advise on lifestyle choices to help avoid issues with back, neck and join pain, along with a number of other related problems.

To avoid strain when bending and lifting, ensure you bend your elbows, contract your abdominal muscles and bend knees and hips rather than your back. Using light-weight, long-handled tools can help reduce body strain.” Melanie went onto explain. “Is it possible to raise flower beds? Are your garden tools easy to access and maintain? Make sure you have plenty of knee cushions, wear protective gloves and suitable, loose clothing.”
“Gardening provides beneficial exercise, and one way of avoiding strain or injury is to invest in ergonomic tools with wide handles.
Garden activity should be varied every half hour, with regular breaks in between. Melanie explained: “The key is to listen to your body. If it hurts, stop. After a gardening session, have an icepack in the freezer or have a relaxing warm bath.”
“Before tackling the heavy tasks, start off with gentle garden jobs so muscles to warm up. Avoid lifting heavy objects if possible, use a

A
s the kitchen is the heart of any home, MCR Joinery can help it become a muchloved living space by offering a complete package of services and a top notch standard of woodwork installation. Based in the Wolds village of Weaverthorpe, MCR Joinery is owned and run by Michael Rowland. “I’ve always had a keen interest in joinery,” explained Michael. “I gained my City and Guilds Certificate in Joinery with ‘Distinction’. After working at a joinery firm and for building contractors, I knew kitchen design was the area I wished to specialise in. “I live and work in a lovely part of Yorkshire and I am keen to appeal to locals who might just need a joinery repair doing right through to a full kitchen, designed especially for them.” MCR Joinery offers the full kitchen installation package, from design, to supply and fit, all with minimum fuss and mess. Michael explained: “Having your kitchen upgraded can be disruptive but we carefully consider how to plan the project, so customers can just sit back, relax and watch their dream kitchen become a reality.” Michael’s team of local trades-people includes builders, plumbers and electricians, so all aspects are covered. Michael added: “And if you have bought a ready-made kitchen, don’t pay over the odds for installation, as our prices are a lot cheaper – music to any Yorkshire person’s ears!”MCR Joinery can also help with smaller jobs such as door fitting, wardrobes, and cupboards, all finished to an excellent standard.

ON YOUR PLOT Courgettes
M
ay is the time to start off that wonderfully easy vegetable - the courgette. If you’ve never grown courgettes before then I can highly recommend it as they give such a high yield from even just a couple of plants. In fact don’t be tempted to grow too many or you’ll be inundated!
Nature’s Way
Help in the garden Independent gardener with 35 years experience working in gardens large and small. All garden services including Pruning, Mowing, Planting, Weeding Practical advice on garden design Nature and sustainable gardening And much more!
Plant the seeds undercover or on a windowsill. Put two seeds to a pot, laying them on their sides and covering with about 1” of compost. They usually germinate in a week to 10 days and grow rapidly. Remove the weaker of the seedlings (I always feel guilty when I do this! If it looks good I re-pot it). When the seedlings have 4 to 6 leaves start to harden off by placing outside during the day. Plant out after all risk of frost has passed. You can also start courgettes outside but I’d wait until later in the month when the soil is a bit warmer. The plants will grow quickly, producing exotic looking yellow flowers (look out for recipes for the flowers too). For maximum yields the plants should be harvested regularly. Tiny courgettes are very tasty, and don’t be tempted to turn your back on the plants for too long as they grow large at an amazing rate! Be careful with watering when seedlings as the stems can rot, but they’ll need plenty of water once they have grown. If you’re short of space courgettes can be grown in grow bags, planting two to a bag. With summer in mind, don’t forget to keep planting your salad crops. As well as the traditional lettuce there are a host of other salad leaves that can be grown, and it’s usually possible to buy packets of mixed salad seeds. Get in the habit of planting some at least once a fortnight - use some of the leaves to cut and come again for tasty fresh salad, transplanting some lettuces outside and allowing them to grow on to full size. Fancy your own, home grown, Brussels sprouts with Christmas dinner? They need quite a long growing time, so think about starting them around now. 36 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley
areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

ON GOOD IDEAS
Since the industrial revolution, humankind has been a non-stop invention factory, producing more and more gadgets, gimmicks and devices year upon year. What with the knowledge and technology available nowadays, new inventions seem to increase exponentially in complexity. But, an idea doesn’t necessarily have to be complicated in order to be brilliant. In fact, some of the most incredible products of the most ingenious minds are so much more impressive than so-called landmark inventions, just by the virtue of their simplicity. An idol of mine, Douglas Adams once wrote: “It is a rare mind indeed that can render the hitherto non-existent blindingly obvious. The cry ‘I could have thought of that’ is a very popular and misleading one, for the fact is that they didn’t, and a very significant and revealing fact it is too.” To me, it seems that some of those clever minds, and their staggeringly clever inventions, may have been neglected their fair share of awe. For example, before Mr. Robert Plath’s magical brainchild, everyone used to have porters and bellboys to carry their heavy luggage, or otherwise do it themselves. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the idea appeared to add little wheels onto suitcases. Now, in hindsight, that doesn’t seem all that impressive, but hindsight here is the key. What is astounding is the fact that this simple, easy, obvious solution was not thought of until this guy thought of it. Paperclips came into existence from the mind of Samuel Fay – he found a way to attach together fabric and paper without damaging the materials whatsoever. Again, a tiny piece of bent metal hardly seems that worthy of recognition, but think how many paperclips have you used in your life? How many have you used this week, or even today? Their design is in fact so flawless that it has remained unchanged for over 100 years. The same goes for post-it notes, Velcro, zips, millions of seemingly boring and obvious inventions were in fact not at all obvious until someone came up with them. I’ll even dare say it – sliced bread was a damn good idea (congratulations to Frederick Rohwedder). Ella 44 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Paul David Photography History in the Taking
KIRKBYMOORSIDE ENVIRONMENT GROUP Spring is sprung, the grass is riz… how ugly all that LITTER is! The days lengthen and warm, and there is a blossoming of colour along our roadside verges. Wouldn’t it would be lovely if it was all spring flowers? Unfortunately, though, as the holiday traffic increases, the newly-unfolded celandines, violets and daffodils start to get crowded out by a steady shower of Red Bull cans, crisp packets, and burger boxes.

Not that car-thrown litter isn’t a problem all year round, but as a regular litter-picker I know from experience that it changes with the seasons - you can tell when it’s school holidays, for instance, by the sudden increase in sweet wrappers; and in the cold weather there are more takeaway coffee-cups and fewer pop bottles. So now we’re getting to that time of year when fine days tempt us out for days at the beach or on the moors; and how very odd it is, surely, that some of the people who are drawn to the countryside for its unspoilt beauty then choose to dump their lunch-rubbish in the middle of it. In fact, it was finding their Coke bottles and McDonald’s packaging on walks around Bransdale that finally make me crack. Enough of feeling helplessly angry and depressed, I decided – time to do something! So I contacted Ryedale District Council and discovered that they will give a free long-handled litter-grabber to anyone wanting to pick regularly. And guess what? I love litter-picking! It’s such a good feeling to take care of a little bit of the world and keep it clean and happy – and good for my mental health to feel that I’m not letting the vandals have it all their own way. Plus it’s nice, steady exercise in the fresh air. I can strongly recommend it to anyone else out there who’s fed up with their world being rubbished. I must confess that I don’t wear the high-vis vest that the Council gave me, though - I feel conspicuous enough without it, actually! But I do like the message on it. MOTORING Jaguar F-Type
By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer www.carwriteups.co.uk @carwriteups The jaguar is the thirdlargest feline and has a compact body, broad head and powerful jaws – and this describes perfectly the new F-TYPE from Jaguar Land Rover.

This two-seater convertible embodies a return to the company’s heartland, focusing on athleticism, dexterity and behind-the-wheel involvement. The use of lightweight aluminium helps provide perfectly balanced weight distribution which permits the Jag’s rear-wheel drive dynamics to be exploited to the max. Three types of the Jaguar model are available: the F-TYPE, F-TYPE S and F-TYPE V8 S. Each is distinguished by the power output of its supercharged petrol engine, and all of them feature stop/start technology to increase efficiency. My press car was the F-TYPE S, powered by a new 3 litre V6 lump. Producing 375bhp and 338lb/ft of torque, the free-revving, willing nature of the engine encourages you to be, shall we say, enthusiastic! The 0-62mph sprint comes in just 4.9 seconds and the top speed is 171mph. And just when you think the Jaguar F-TYPE couldn’t possibly release any more endorphins into your bloodstream – you come across the sports car’s active exhaust system. With just a touch of a button you can change an already throaty sounding exhaust note into one that builds to a thrilling crescendo at the red line. The car has a set of 8 closely-spaced gear ratios in its Quickshift auto transmission, giving you superior control. The V6-powered S model also includes a Dynamic Launch feature, which optimises acceleration from rest. With hints of aeronautical inspiration in the grouped switches and the joystick-shaped SportShift selector controlling the gearbox, the F-TYPE is a car that delivers precisely the key sporting characteristics that Jaguar intended. It’s definitely a big toy for big boys and girls – and it’s available from £58,500 for entry level, rising to £67,520 for the F-TYPE S, on to a price-tag of £79,950 for the F-TYPE V8 S. 52 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

A SPECTACULAR FLOWER FESTIVAL AT PICKERING PARISH CHURCH
Friday 23rd May to Sunday 1st June, 10am – 8pm. Preview Evening Thursday 22nd May at 7pm. Following the huge success of the The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which attracted an amazing 20,000 visitors, Pickering Parish Church are planning a second Flower Festival based on The Wizard of Oz which will be run from Friday, 23 May until Sunday 1 June. Well-known floral designers from around the NorthEast will work together on the designs to tell the story in a most exciting and colourful way. Regular workshops are already in full swing to create and build the many structures which will hold the flowers and to complete the intricate craftwork required. These workshops are a crucial part of the Festival and will contribute enormously to its success. Local schools and other community groups will be taking part in a scarecrow competition, and the winning entry will be displayed at the Festival with the remainder creating a trail from the Station to the Church. North Yorkshire Moors Railway will also be supporting the event by holding a Wizard of Oz Week with special trains and their own schedule of activities. It promises to be an exciting and innovative event at the cutting edge of floral art which will provide something for everyone – young and old alike. The Parish Hall will be transformed into the Rainbow Café serving coffee, lunches and afternoon teas, making a trip to the Festival a truly worthwhile day out. There will be a special Preview Evening on Thursday 22nd May at 7pm. Admission is £10 and tickets must be pre-booked by telephoning 01751 467144. All money raised will go towards the Church Lighting Fund to provide specialised lighting to illuminate the world famous wall paintings in the Church.

GOLDEN OLDIES
I
t is always sad to see any dog coming into the rescue, abandoned or unwanted, but when it is a golden oldie it really tugs at our heart strings.
is 12 years old and came to us because his family is moving and cannot take him, he still loves his walks, enjoys company and is in good health.
Whilst writing this my 16 year old Lab Cross is curled up beside me, she is happy and content, sleeping more than usual but ready to “spring up”, well as much as a 16 year old can, as soon as she sees her lead being picked up. Life is pretty good for Megan, she has her family who adore her, two other dogs for company, plenty of walks and her own spot on the sofa beside her mum. This is what our golden oldies deserve, they have been loyal and loving all their lives and to find themselves unwanted in their senior years seems so harsh.
May I take this opportunity to thank Kate Collier for holding an auction on behalf of Y.C.D.R and EARS on 6th April, the total raised will be announced on our Facebook page in due course. Thank you also to the many people who saw our Handy Mag feature and have visited our stall in Pickering Flea Market bringing much appreciated books to sell and new items suitable for tombolas, we are always in need of these items.
If you are looking for a dog but haven’t the time to go on long walks, play tuggy and chase all evening or spend time dog training then perhaps a golden oldie could be the solution for you. They will still want their walks but not quite as far, they will still want to play but not quite as long, but best of all they still have so much love to give. Our Winston

MISH MISH MY CONTINUED WEIGHT LOSS Celia Carr RVN Station House Vets I have been losing more weight! It has had my owner flummoxed as all my bloods came back clear which ruled out the conditions that could start to affect a cat of my age and that would be consistent with my symptoms. She has been worried. I, however, have been perfectly happy, purring merrily to myself as I sunbathed on the patio table, basking in beautiful spring sunshine. I was disturbed from my thoughts by my owner, who came out, stared at me, then took my heart rate which was 200 beats per minute. Too fast for a healthy cat, but normal for me of late. She stroked me and frowned as she could feel every part of my spinal column. As I looked in the conservatory window I saw myself, my fur dull, greasy and scurfy. I looked like I had aged dramatically over the last couple of weeks since my last visit to the Vets. I am half the cat I used to be, but I feel fine, a bit vague at times, lacking appetite occasionally but I’m always purring. My owner is concerned as she saw me standing in my bed staring into space as though I had forgotten why I was there. Then there was the occasion I shot through the kitchen door at breakfast time, desperate to get to my biscuits only to forget why I was there. My owner found me under the dining room table staring at the wall. I was very surprised when she placed a bowl of food under my nose and I let out a little miaow before eating them slowly. As a result here I am again. At the Vets! I was here a few weeks ago and weighed just 6.1kg. I’m a tall and long cat and used to weigh 8kg I was mildly overweight but not overly, I was a panther. We were both surprised at my weight loss but attributed it to the fact I was no longer getting fed extra dinners from our old neighbours as the bloods ruled out any medical conditions.
Today my owner gasped as I purred happily on the cat scales. I weighed just 5.38kg. - a dramatic loss in such a short space of time. The vet examined me and palpated my abdomen. Then I heard the words no one wants to hear. She explained she could feel an intestinal mass about the size of a tangerine. Lymphoma she called it. My owner was devastated. She said she had had her suspicions when I continued to lose weight and condition that there must be something more sinister going on but she convinced herself I had a treatable disease. The vet x-rayed me to see whether the cancer had spread to any other organs and to see if my intestines were attached to the tumour. It looked positive but she explained that until she started surgery she could not be sure whether it would be possible to fully remove the tumour. She took a fine needle aspirate from the tumour, which looks at the cells to send for analysis to a certain how aggressive the cancer was. When I was examined a few weeks ago the vet did not feel the tumour so my owner is concerned it has grown rapidly. The other option is to treat me with steroids but this will only support me not cure me. The future is looking bleak for me but I hold out hope for receiving my lab results tomorrow...

A GOOD READ By Kath Bennett The Wrestling Simon Garfield
If you are of a certain age, then the names Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks will instantly bring back memories of Saturday afternoon television and the showmanship of wrestling. Garfield’s book is a paean to the heyday of Wrestling, and also tells the story of how the sport died out. For the most part, he lets the wrestlers and the promoters speak for themselves, beginning with a 1995 reunion where old grievances are aired, and tracking through from the old stagers to the up and coming youngsters. Is there anything here to interest someone who has never watched or even been aware of professional wrestling? Well, yes - there is a strong element of social history to the book, as TV makes and breaks the sport. Garfield also deals to some extent with the perennial claims that wrestling is fixed. Part history, part nostalgia, part humour, with something interesting on every page, this is well worth a look.

Every home should have a good atlas - for a child there is little better than travelling the world by turning the pages. For any child wanting to embark on their own adventure of the imagination, ‘Maps’ is an absolute must have. Each page covers a country, with beautiful illustrations of key cities, wildlife, landmarks and peoples. Two children from that country feature, and there are facts about languages and population. Quite simply, you could stare at each page for hours. William Morris famously said that you should have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful. This book is both. Buy it. 62 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

THE SIMPSON’S TRUST CELEBRATES 90 YEARS OF GIVING FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE The Simpson’s Trust was set up 90 years ago on 4th April 1924 as a bequest from Norton resident, Miss Sarah Elizabeth Simpson in the, then enormous, sum of £10,000 pounds. Trustees were charged with the task of using the interest from investment of that sum for “the relief and assistance of any old or infirm or poor and necessitous deserving people in and about New Malton, Old Malton, Norton and the surrounding district without regard to sex, denomination, religious or political belief”. The current trustees are pleased that they have been able to make grants to 42 individuals and organisations in the last 12 months for sums mainly in the range of £50 to £100. They have been
able to make these payments because of careful investments of the remaining funds over the last few years and also because of some very generous recent donations to the Trust. We have been able to help individuals and families who have fallen on hard times for whatever reason. We have been able to give special support to some families at Christmas. Most of the recipients of our grants have been identified by child or family support workers but we would welcome requests from anyone who thinks they would qualify for our aid. Requests and offers of donations should be made through our Secretary, Mrs Christine Grice 01944 768270. Further information is available on our website www.thesimpsonstrust.org

ith bicycles as lighting stands and a stage set carried in panniers, this will be a truly intriguing concert of beautiful guitar music.
Richard Durrant, internationally renowned guitarist, will be cycling to Pickering on Friday, 30 May to perform at Pickering Memorial Hall in aid of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research. “We’re thrilled that Richard agreed to include Pickering in his amazing tour,” said Chloë Jackson from Thornton-le- Dale. “My family and I have been raising funds for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research after my father, Eric, died suddenly from a very rare form of blood cancer last year. He loved music and thoroughly enjoyed Richard’s concert in Pickering in 2012. I’ve seen Richard perform in Ryedale several times now and I know we can

look forward to a fantastic evening of great music and humorous anecdotes and what better way to begin the build-up to the Tour de France!” The Sussex musician will be playing 36 gigs at UK venues during a 1,000-mile odyssey that will be the last word in eco-friendliness. Cycling up to 50 miles a day, Richard will be carrying his entire show on his bike. Each performance will still feature beautiful lighting, projections and sound, but the gear will be state of the art, low energy and lightweight. Speaking during a recent interview, Richard described the gig in Pickering, the most northerly location on the tour, as “rather poignant because the gig is to celebrate Eric’s life and raise money for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.” To book your seat, please telephone or visit Pickering Tourist Information Centre – 01751 473791. THE CHOICE IS CLEAR WHEN CONSIDERING WINDOWS, CONSERVATORIES AND DOORS FOR YOUR HOME.
F
ersina North Yorkshire Ltd can transform and even add value to your property.
Company director Alan Walker, who’s worked in the industry for nearly three decades, has seen some changes during that time. “The technology of glazing and related materials has changed beyond recognition,” explained Alan. “Most of us would think of white, uPVC double glazed windows and traditional conservatories as the only options. “Today, Fersina can offer bespoke services, unique to a person’s home. From complex frames, to different colours, or even a ‘glass room’, we can help.” Alan and the team can offer a selection of affordable high grade glazing finishes which can help keep fuel bills down. And in most cases, planning permission is not a requirement, and if building regulations need to be considered, then Fersina takes care of this too. Alan said: “If we take conservatories, Fersina can design and build one which has the technology to keep a room cool or warm – in other words, it can be used throughout the year. We can install thermostat and rain stat controls; we can even create a glass room, with no uPVC joins at all!” If a conservatory is not an option for your home, and your windows are due for replacing, then Fersina should be first on your list.
From heat-saving replacement double glazing through to specialist windows, Fersina can help. Alan explained: “If you have a period property, or want to renovate a home, then we can now offer beautiful sash windows which replicate traditional wooden ones, but without the need for redecoration or constant care. There is a whole spectrum of colours to choose from, and they don’t cost the earth!” The choice at Fersina is first rate, with slim-line aluminium frames an option, ideal for listed buildings. “Our portfolio of work is wide-ranging,” said Alan. “You can see our work in the arched window at the Kirk Theatre in Pickering; we are soon to start work at the Wesleyan Chapel in Hartoft. Our clients also include schools, the TA Centre in York, modern council builds in the area, and many more.” And from the elegant to the ‘everyday’, Fersina’s outstanding portfolio of products also includes standard or automatic garage doors, a great idea if you find lifting heavy items difficult. If security is top of your list, then why not consider a rock door, the strongest spec door on the market today. Fersina also have a range of roofline products in a multitude of colours. Alan and his team can help you with your query at their premises in Horsemarket Road, Malton.
