A belated Happy New Year and best wishes for 2013 to all of our readers and advertisers. My positive thoughts and warm fuzzy feelings for 2013 came to an end on the evening on 1st January with the discovery that we had no broadband. I never realised how reliant we had all become on it. No watching BBC iplayer, no films, no emails, no banking, no quick searching for the crossword answers for the Saturday morning newspaper…oh yes and more importantly, no working at home! Both for the business and personally I don’t remember life without being permanently plugged in to the web. For a while my children got to experience life in the school holidays with no internet – life as my childhood was - having to resort to digging around in the back of the cupboard in the vague hope of finding something marginally more interesting to do than watching what was on TV! Walking the dogs (for longer than normal) and coming down to dinner when called have become the norm in our house. I’m beginning

to quite enjoy the lack of broadband. I might even feel a bit sad when the engineer gets here and fixes it….mind you I do just need to go and check Twitter and has anyone posted anything interesting on Facebook….?! Speaking of warm fuzzy feelings, Valentine’s Day is soon. Meals, gifts and beauty treatments are all on offer in the Handy Mag this month. Make sure you make your loved one feel special. My other half is usually working away but we send a text – so romantic!! This year please make the effort to shop locally and use local services. Many of our businesses are feeling the pinch. And remember to let them know that you found them in the Handy Mag when you call them. Well done to Mrs Rambridge for winning the December competition. Until next time…Marianne

Bright Sparks C&S Electrical’s reputation for quality, reliability and trustworthiness is continuing to grow along with their business. Paul Cammidge and Andrew Stagnell, who founded C&S Electrical in 2006, are adding larger projects to their portfolio of domestic and commercial electrical work. They specialise in working on kitchen installations and are trusted partners of Instyle Kitchens, B&Q and Wickes. In the last year they have been working on more and more kitchens and larger projects like rewires. They can can bring any electrical wiring system up to date with the latest regulations, performing a complete re-wire if necessary, and they can be on hand in the middle of the night to deal with any emergencies, thanks to their 24-hour call-out service. They can also install the latest in stylish lighting or get involved in any renovation or extension project on your home. A prestigious project in which they installed a full wiring and electrics system for the Calvary Chapel in York, near the Barbican, is now almost finalised. Land Rover Freelander Land Rover has given its perennial premium compact SUV a nip and tuck for 2013 – but is it enough to keep buyers interested in the off-roader? We take it for a spin in the icy wilds of snow-blown Canada. WHAT IS IT?

Land Rover’s perennial compact SUV given a little wipe over with the flannel to freshen it up. The changes aren’t huge inside or out, but they’re enough to give it a new lease of life. The talking points on the outside are some smart new headlights, new rear tail-lights that look like dumpy red snowmen, and a more striking grille. Inside it’s had more attention with an Evoque-ess makeover.

WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET?

There are two diesel units which are both 2.2 litres in size but with different power outputs, 147 bhp and 187 bhp, they both offer four-wheel drive. There’s also a 150PS version in two-wheel drive form, but quite why you’d opt for that we have no idea apart from its lower CO2 emissions. We tried a brilliant 2.0-litre petrol engine too on our road test in Canada, but sadly this won’t be coming to the UK. In fact, it was actually our pick of the bunch.

nowhere near as bold as its sister cars which is a shame, however its capability off road can’t be doubted and despite its age we still think it’s a rugged alternative to some often rather boring Germanic offerings. It’s worth a look for the pony-pulling set. by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

The Knowledge Model: Land Rover Freelander Price: £39,805 Engine: 2.2 litre, diesel Power: 187 bhp, 420Nm

Max speed: 118 mph 0-60mph: 8.7s MPG (comb’d): 40.4 Emissions: 185g/km

WHAT’S THE KIT LIKE?

It’s on the inside where the manufacturer has really gone to work. The centre console is new and the old Terrain Response dial has been swapped for buttons from the Evoque. A new instrument cluster has been installed which has a five inch display that offers the important details. It now has keyless go, a brilliant hitch assist that helps drivers line up their tow bar and clever voice activation. There are three new colours to choose from paint wise and the stereo system provided by Meridian is nothing short of extravagant.

ANY RIVALS?

There are lots, and that’s the problem. Audi Q5, BMW X3, Volvo XC60 and VW Tiguan all represent very talented and capable alternatives to the rugged Brit. All are newer than the Freelander and are tough competition to the Land Rover.

SAVING OVER £10,000

IS IT ANY GOOD?

If you were hoping for a whole new car, you’ll be sorely disappointed. This revision is a nip and tuck at best bringing its styling into line with the other, newer models in the range. However there’s no denying that the Freelander is extremely capable off-road – some of the terrain we tackled on the launch was positively frightening and it sailed right through it.

WHAT’S OUR VERDICT?

The revisions inside bring the Freelander up to date, but we had rather hoped they’d have done more with the exterior. The new lights are striking, but 16 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Colour matching is to the manufacturer’s specification using the original colour code taken from the car and incorporating a computerised mixing system. Linear Fencing’s prices are competitive, and Andy is willing to work to all tastes and budgets to come up with a solution that suits your pocket and your garden. Furthermore, he pledges to match any quote you receive from anyone else for the same job. Andy will visit, measure up your space give advice and prepare a quote for free; you’re under no obligation after that and can decide how to proceed in your own time. As well as fencing and decking, Linear Fencing can provide

almost any wooden addition to your garden; they have a huge selection of trellises, panelling and garden seating. And if you want something really special, Linear Fencing will create and fit a bespoke shed, trellis or seating set to your taste and specifications. As well as almost limitless design options, there are plenty of different wood types to choose from, to match your garden, house and the way you’re planning to use your new product. All of Linear Fencing’s wood is panelled and specially treated, for maximum durability and a great-looking finish. On top of all that, Linear Fencing also supply and build patios, and a final added service is lawn care and grass cutting. In the two years since setting

up, Andy says business has been good, largely due to a growing reputation thanks to his excellent customer satisfaction record. Previously a builder and JCB operator, Andy went on to work for the Strensall-based Apex Shed & Fencing Ltd as a fitter. When they decided to outsource the installation of their products, Andy set up Linear Fencing and became their number one fitter. He’s also frequently recommended by other tradesmen working in the area, as well as his own happy customers. He works on every job himself, alongside one employee installer. At just 27, he’s making an impression on his customers and colleagues for his energy and enthusiasm for the job. The Linear Fencing van is a familiar sight around York, where Andy is based, and the areas they cover, which include Haxby, Strensall, Wiggington, Huntington, and he’s happy to travel further throughout Ryedale if required.

A Pas s i o n for P o t a t o e s

February is the time of year ear to think about perfect potatoes and smashing spuds.

Home grown potatoes are an incredibly good value crop and you’ll soon find that the so-called humble spud is actually a very tasty and extremely versatile vegetable. If you don’t have much space, use a 45cm (18in) diameter pot with a single tuber. Make sure the container is well supplied with drainage holes, fill it two thirds full of compost, pop a tuber in the centre and add a further couple of inches of compost. As foliage appears, add more compost to cover it over and repeat until no more can be added, then keep the container well watered. Most potatoes produce a slightly earlier and somewhat heavier crop if the seed potatoes are

perfect for planting. What to Grow: Steamed potatoes are delicious, especially if cooked the day you lift them. Try Vanessa, Dunluce, Edzell Blue and Lady Christl for some of the tastiest steamers. New potatoes dripping in chives and butter are wonderful. Try Lady Christl, Charlotte, Juliette, Casa Blanca, Nadine and Nicola. If you adore mashed potato then try Dunluce, Valour, Maris Bard, Lady Balfour and King Edward. If you love your potatoes in their jackets, then try Cara, Lady Balfour, Picasso, Kestrel, King Edward, Desiree and Valor. For great roast potatoes try Kestrel, Maris Piper, Desiree, Lady Balfour, Vivaldi and Edzel Blue. For the best chips, use Kestrel, King Edward, Maris Peer, Accord, Rooster and Edzel Blue. Potatoes are divided into ‘earlies’ (first to be harvested)

and ‘main crop’, generally larger tubers, harvested later. Try ‘earlies’ if your soil hasn’t been cultivated for several years. ‘Earlies’ are in the ground for less time than main crops and are less likely to suffer from wire-worm attack. ‘Earlies’ are also useful in smaller gardens as they takes less space and are in the ground for a shorter period, giving you the opportunity to grow another fast-maturing crop after the potatoes have been lifted. No crop is without its share of problems and the fungus responsible for potato blight is sometimes hard to beat, especially in warm, damp years. Generally, ‘earlies’ suffer less with blight and you can select varieties which show resistance to the infection such as Valor, Lady Balfour, Coleen and especially Sarpo Mira and Sarpo Axona. Slugs are also a real menace, tunnelling into the tubers’ flesh and sometimes even hollowing them out completely. The biological control nematode Nemaslug

works under the soil surface, has a brilliant effect and poses no threat to wildlife. Why not grow some great vegetables in 2013? Visit www.pippagreenwood. com, sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ and choose from a fantastic selection. You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter, receive a free e-book on organic gardening, buy Nemaslug and other biological controls and a hand-picked selection of garden products from her website.

It’s February and the world is set to go into romance overload. But what about those relationships Hallmark doesn’t make a card for: the mistresses, the bits on the side and the forbidden loves? We’ve put together a selection of both classic and contemporary scandals so you can live vicariously through them…unless you have something you want to come clean about?!

Secret & Lies Madame Bovary

Gustave Flaubert Doctor’s wife, Emma Bovary leads an increasingly scandalous and yet, in her eyes, eternally boring life as she tries to escape the confines of her provincial existence. Trapped in a dull marriage and dreaming of passion, excitement and fulfilment, she finds that real life never fails to fall short of her great expectations. The book caused absolute outrage when it was first published, though there was no shortage of women claiming to be Madame Bovary. Gustave always maintained he based the character on himself…but there were obviously a LOT of bored French housewives in the nineteenth century.

The Bride Stripped Bare

Nikki Gemmell This is the story of an awakening of epic proportions. Why work in shades of grey when you can live your own life by your own rules in glorious Technicolor? A husband reveals a secret on his honeymoon, giving his wife the strength and the freedom to finally go after what she wants and desires...in the form of an inexperienced suitor.

The Post Birthday World

Lionel Shriver Affairs are usually referred to as ‘ill-fated’ and invariably it all ends in tears. Here’s a novel that starts with a kiss, or not, and then runs in two parallel stories. It’s the thinking man/woman’s Sliding Doors. Irina McGovern could lean in and kiss the rough around the edges, snookerplaying Ramsay, or she could choose not to and to remain faithful to her straight-laced partner, Lawrence. If we could see the repercussions of our actions, would we take that chance and steal a moment with someone? The book is about human relationships and how we’re all flawed. So basically, it’s damned if you do and…you get the picture. 24 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Lady Chatterley’s Lover

D.H.Lawrence Long before Desperate Housewives, people were having affairs with their gardeners. Constance Chatterley’s husband lies paralysed after a war injury and as she struggles with both the emotional and physical neglect, her head is turned by one Oliver Mellors. And boy, must he be good. The novel tackles the relationship between the upper and working classes as well as the battle between the body and mind. For a book written in the 1920s, it’s pretty explicit, making it a favourite of students forced to read Lawrence the world over.

Getting Rid of Matthew

Jane Fallon No one ever leaves their wife for their mistress. Do they? What happens when the excitement and thrill of a fling turn up on your doorstep and you’re instantly plunged into domesticity? The answer is simple: start operation Getting Rid Of Matthew. This involves making yourself as undesirable as possible. There are unexpected twists and turns for Helen who really needs to learn to be careful what she wishes for.

Notes on a Scandal

Zoë Heller Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. When Sheba the new comprehensive school art teacher embarks on an affair with an underage boy, she has only sixty-something year old fellow teacher Barbara to confide in. Barbara relishes the close friendship that has been established between the two of them, but it takes a sinister turn when she discovers the truth about the boy.

An exciting year

for Haxby

2013 is a really special year for Haxby as it is the 150th Anniversary of the Ecclesiastical Parish.

Working with the Town Council, St Mary’s Church in Haxby is organising a whole series of special events throughout the year to celebrate the occasion. The anniversary is of the parish itself and not the church or the village as such, because until 1863, Haxby was part of the parish of Strensall. Haxby goes a long way back in time, but it was only in 1863 that the parish of Haxby came into existence. Planning for the celebrations is well advanced and a wide range of activities will be taking place over the year, designed to involve the wider community of Haxby and beyond. Everyone will be welcome to join in.

The range of events include:• St John’s University musicians in concert in February • A concert in April by a group of Russian Orthodox singers - the Hermitage Ensemble from St Petersburg who are internationally famous • Possible concerts in the church by musicians from Joseph Rowntree School • A Rogation Day walk around the parish boundaries • A flower festival over a May weekend in St Mary’s • A children’s celebration in co-operation with the local schools, • An exhibition of interesting items related to the parish • A parish picnic on the village green • A “readathon” of the Bible • An anniversary service, led by the Bishop, in September • Golden flowers planted through the village by the Town Council

A special feature of the preparations has been the development of a dedicated website to be operated during 2013. It has now been launched although it is still a “work in progress”. The website will contain (amongst other things) the Haxby150 logo, a diary of events, some history of Haxby including the “new” parish, a picture gallery, hopefully, a method of buying event tickets, and, very importantly, a part of the site where everyone can join in with comments, memories, pictures, anecdotes and memorabilia. For more inforamtion see the website at www.haxby150.co.uk or call Ian Strong (PCC Secretary - Tel: 769771 - Email: ianstrong@ hotmail.co.uk)

he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours. For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. Your team of installers were first rate and I couldn’t fault them one bit... The end result is exactly what we wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you

to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 22 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing

with around 20. We have more than 200 different kitchen styles available to our customers. “Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected, too.” The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a completely stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from start to finish. The process begins with a visit from Instyle’s designer Paul Streicher, who will listen to the customer and add lots of creative ideas to plan a kitchen that fits perfectly with their ideas, personality and home. A CAD (computer-aided design) will be produced, helping the customer visualise the end result. Gary then surveys the customer’s home, and project manages the work himself at no extra cost – bringing in and overseeing his own trusted team of electricians, plasterers, plumbers and tilers.

YORK

Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions. Although a new kitchen is a big investment, Instyle consistently beats its competitors on price – customers often ring up to double check Gary and his team haven’t made a mistake on the quote. But if money is tight, an Instyle facelift can freshen up a tired-out kitchen for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen for a fraction of the cost. We are completely flexible; even if someone just wants a new sink, we’ll work with them to give them what they want. “We’ve found we don’t need to use any pressurising sales tactics, we just make sure we provide exactly what the customer wants, for extremely competitive prices.” For no-nonsense know-how, designs to suit you and a smooth installation process, contact Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms on 01904 764383.

Stockton House and Early Methodists Why and how did the Methodists come to Stockton? Why was Stockton House built? What was the legacy of Thomas and Susanna Wilkinson to the village? Children used to curtsey to a lady sitting in the window, who was she? Where did people smell chicory being processed? These questions and more are answered in a new book written by M.D. Jefferies on the history of Stockton House.

Happy times but hard work! The Land Army in Stockton House Stockton House was used by the Land Army during and after the Second World War, until 1950. On 28th May 1944 the Women’s Land Army Hostel at Strensall was closed and all the 35 girls came to Stockton House. In the Women’s Land Army Newsletter of September 1944, it stated: “All the girls have settled down in the new surroundings and enjoy living in a house instead of a hutment!” Not all the girls were lucky enough to get a hostel place. Dorothy Jacob Smith, born 1910, was the Regional Co-ordinator for North Yorkshire and she received a report from one of her colleagues. She had visited the billet of a small group of girls who were working in drainage. “I went to inspect the room and I was horrified to find that they had to sit and eat in the kitchen as the farmer and his wife slept in the parlour. I was still more horrified when taken upstairs and found that first of all I had to go into a bedroom occupied by a man lodger and the landlady’s 34 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

brother and then through a hole in the wall over which there was a curtain to reach the girls’ room! The home was clean but there was no electric light and one tap in the scullery over a sink where the entire household washed and that was in the back kitchen next to the back door which was the main entry into the house. I write this so you will not be horrified when the girls talk about the hole in the wall.” Needless to say the girls were found a new billet probably a hostel! Sometimes the farmer found the girl was unsuitable for billeting on the famr and a place would have been found in a hostel. The hostels became an important part in the Women’s Land Army and the Stockton Hostel based at Stockton House accommodated about 45 girls in the main house and 8 in the annexe. Tremendous fun and lively laughter was had by all. Stories about the girls, their work and social life are covered in the book. The book entitled “Stockton House and Early Methodists” is a history from Georgian times in Stockton on the Forest. It discusses the early, often clandestine,

gatherings of the early Methodists and the provision and upkeep of an early school and chapel in the Stockton House by Thomas and Susanna Wilkinson. They provided funds for the village and the charity lasted over 160 years even helping with computer provision at the village school in the recent past. Other chapters cover the colourful residents including George Dixon who was the British expert on chicory growing who tried to promote the crop in the use as a substitute for coffee during the First World War and the years immediately afterwards. He vigorously campaigned against the heavy tax on the crop to the advantage of foreign growers. Many of York residents are familiar with the story of the ghostly Roman Army at the Treasurer’s House but few will know about ‘The Army in the Sky.’ The book shows the context of the vision by twi Stockton on the Forest residents during the Napoleonic War in the eighteenth century. For an interesting read, the book, costing £7.50, can be obtained from Stockton House by ringing 01904 400217.

FEBRUARY 2012 • ISSUE 87 1. To make the pastry, sift the flour into a bowl and add the diced butter. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the egg and water and mix to a crumbly dough. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently until smooth. Wrap and chill the pastry for 20 minutes. 2. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 25cm round deep metal pie tin (or a loose-based fluted flan tin). Crimp the pastry edge with your fingers and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill for 30 minutes. 3. Preheat the oven to 200oC/400oF/Gas 6 and place a baking sheet in the oven to heat. 4. To make the filling, melt the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Remove from the heat and stir in the golden syrup, maple syrup and sugar then whisk in the beaten eggs. Chop half the nuts and stir into the mixture. 5. Gently pour the mixture into the pastry case and sprinkle over the rest of the nuts (roughly chopping the hazelnuts and Brazil nuts, if using). Slide the pie tin onto the preheated baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 180C/350F/Gas 4 and bake for a further 25-30 minutes until the filling has set and the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold.

Get Motivated! We can all feel de-motivated at times, so if January has passed you by without starting any of those New Year resolutions, turn February into the month you take some positive steps to regain control.

T

rying to achieve all that you want in the coming year may feel like an impossible task and it can lead to feeling totally de-motivated. Motivation is key to our creativity, productivity and happiness. When we are motivated we feel like we can take on any challenge, meet any deadline and work through any problem to achieve our goal, whether that’s personal satisfaction or public recognition for a job well done.

Slimming World na

But once de-motivation sets in, then even the smallest task can seem insurmountable.

If you’ve given yourself a big goal this year, such as losing a large amount of weight or changing jobs, break it into small, short term goals. Give yourself weekly targets – losing 5lbs or re-writing your CV - and then congratulate yourself on achieving them. By doing this you are building up positive ‘credits’ in your mind, keeping you going for the following week.

business failures which he’s written about in his autobiographies. But these set-backs didn’t stop him - he just tried again. It can be really uplifting to read about other people’s successes. There are also a lot of self-help and business books available which can help you to think about what you do and don’t want. A good one to start with is the international best-seller, Who Moved My Cheese? (Dr Spencer Johnson, Vermilion)

York Pilates Matwork NEW Antenatal Class Tuesdays 6.30-7.30pm £45 for a 5 week course

Stay focused Don’t give yourself too many goals to aim for at once. Focus on one, work out how best to achieve it (in small steps, if needed) and work your way through it before starting on your next goal. Diffusing your energy by trying to change too many things at once will just mean you are less likely to keep up your motivation. So prioritise, write yourself a list and start with number one.

Talk about it A great motivator is other people. If you tell people that you’re going to start writing that novel this month or apply for the local half marathon, you’re much more likely to do it. Talk to friends, family and work colleagues - their gentle nudges or encouragement will help to keep you on track. Putting up little post-it notes to remind yourself of your goals and why you want to achieve them will help keep you motivated and on track, too.

Reject negative thoughts

Teach your baby the enjoyment of water!

How many times do you find yourself saying ‘I can’t do it’, ‘it won’t happen’, or ‘it’s too hard’? Negative thoughts can really bring you down, so give yourself a buzz word or mantra to repeat immediately when a negative thought pops into your head. ‘I’m doing it.’

Sing and play through our structured awards programme and see your baby progress to a confident little swimmer. Babies from 6 weeks old to 6 years old.

Look at the positive Starting to exercise, cutting down on unhealthy food, changing jobs, starting your own business. None of these are easy. Accept that there will be set-backs and bad days or bad weeks. But keep looking at the positives - what did you manage to achieve this week, or how are you going to do better next week? So plan ahead, have lots of small goals to help you reach your big goal, accept there will be set-backs and look at how other people have done what you would like to do. And keep going - you’re doing great! 42 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Oliver Twist

Happy New Year to everyone who supports Cats Protection! One of the cats in our care is certainly looking forward to a fresh start and happier times. Little Oliver Twist was brought in just before Christmas in a very sorry state. This young cat had been found living on the streets and was a very skinny and bedraggled fella. After wolfing down a bowl a food he couldn’t help but ask for more. Oliver was suffering from an infestation of

fleas and was also covered in lice eggs, but his most serious problem was his tail. Dragging it behind him like a soggy rope Oliver’s tail was badly injured. The poor cat had no movement in his tail whatsoever so it was covered in all manner of nastiness and obviously causing him a lot of discomfort. On Christmas Eve Oliver was taken up to the vets and the only thing that could be done to help him was to amputate his tail. The vet suspected that such an injury had been caused by some idiot grabbing Oliver’s tail and swinging him around by it. A few weeks on and Oliver Twist is looking like a brand new cat. He’s slowly putting on some weight and is free from fleas and other parasites. He has had the stitches from his tail stump removed and is full of beans. Despite his horrible ordeal Oliver loves being around people and always gives a cheery miaow when someone walks past his

pen. It would be great to see this chirpy little cat settled into a new home in the near future so if you think you would like to help him please give us a call. York Cats Protection Adoption Centre at 582 Huntington Road is open every day between 11am & 3pm. If you would like to adopt any of our cats please contact us on 01904 760356 or email york@ cats.org.uk. All our cats have been vet checked, microchipped, started on a course of vaccinations, been neutered (if old enough), have been treated for fleas and worms and also come with 4 weeks free pet insurance. Colic

No word strikes more fear in the hearts and minds of horse owners than “colic”; it can affect any horse, at any time, for a multitude of reason. Sadly, colic is still one of the biggest causes of death in horses worldwide but fortunately the vast majority of colic episodes will respond to medical treatment at home.

Signs of Colic Knowing and recognising signs of colic is very important for all horse owners as it will allow you to notice even subtle changes in your horse’s behaviour and allow us to attend to your horse as soon as possible. It must be remembered that no two colic episodes are alike and there is much variation in type, nature and severity of colic signs which include: • Pawing at the ground • Flank watching • Kicking or biting at the belly • Repeated lying down • Rolling • Holding head in unusual position • Repeated curling back of upper lip • Sweating • Stretching out as if to urinate • Dog sitting • Lying on back • Depression • No appetite

Types of Colic There are many different reasons for colic and often we are never really quite sure why a horse has shown colic signs. The vast majority of these are due to some sort of gastrointestinal problem.

What to do if your horse has colic • Call your vet immediately

- colic is a true veterinary emergency and time is of the

48 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

essence

• Place your horse in a small yard

or a well bedded stable to allow for easy and close observation • Remove all food from the stable until the vet arrives • If your horse is rolling violently, try gently walking them or keeping them standing. Violently rolling horses often hurt themselves so trying to prevent self trauma is helpful but don’t put yourself in danger

Colic Myth: Stopping your horse from rolling will stop the bowel from twisting. This is highly unlikely - happy healthy horses roll in the field and their bowel doesn’t twist. Walking your horse can however help distract from the pain and more importantly prevent them from self-traumatising. You must remember however not to walk your horse to exhaustion and to stop for a few minutes every so often to monitor for colic behaviour in your horse

What to tell the vet Your vet on arrival will probably ask you some of the following questions whilst he or she is observing your horse: • Any previous episodes of colic? And how did they resolve? • How old is your horse? • How long has your horse been colicky for? • What colic signs has your horse been showing? • Has your horse passed any

faeces?

• When did your horse last eat or drink?

• Any changes in diet or management lately?

• Is your mare pregnant? • If your mare has recently foaled, how long ago did she foal?

• What is your horse’s worming history?

Treatment After assessing all the different factors involved in your horse’s colic, your vet will decide on the appropriate course of treatment. This may include administration of fluids/electrolytes down a tube through the nose to the stomach, plus or minus some form of a laxative if an impaction is suspected. Pain relief is one of the corner stones of colic therapy and your vet will decided what drug and how much is appropriate. Once pain relieving drugs are given, we want to see a good response and the disappearance of all colic signs. If colic signs recur, it is vital that you contact your veterinarian as a horse that is still painful despite pain relieving drugs may need to be referred to a hospital for further investigation and possible surgery.

Colic Surgery One of the key decisions for the

Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 5th February

YORK

FEBRUARY 2012 • ISSUE 87 vet is whether your horse will require surgery. The vast majority of colics do not require surgery and respond well to treatment at home but if your vet does feel that your horse needs surgery, or at least requires further investigation at a referral hospital, time is of the essence. The decision to take your horse to surgery can often be very difficult and unfortunately, due to the nature of colic, a rapid decision is required. Many factors are involved in making this decision such as severity of the problem, likelihood of a success, and of course, the expense, but your vet is well trained and will be able to help you make the right decision for the horse.

STATION TION HOUSE VETS Equine & Small Animal

Is Colic My Fault? ...owners will commonly ask, but the answer is almost always no. Remember that horses are predisposed to colic because of their unusual gut and stomach arrangements! Avoiding rapid dietary changes, ensuring some exercise every day and practising good preventative health programmes are all sensible measures but even the best kept and most well managed horse can get colic. by Philip Simon BSc(Hons) BVM&S MRCVS Station House Vets Ltd Article adapted from a University of Edinburgh publication http://www.ed.ac.uk/polopoly_fs/1.18068!/fileManager/ dvepfactsheet-colic.pdf

...on dialects As goes tradition, I spent the New Year with our family friends in Milton Keynes, along with some other friends from London. Our more northern accents were therefore quite noticeable and, over dinner, we got into a heated discussion over whether you should ‘pass’ instead of ‘parse’ the salt, and whether we walk on ‘grass’ or ‘grarse’. Now we all know it’s really just small regional differences, but we do seem to feel oddly defensive about which pronunciation was really ‘correct’. And the differences didn’t end in minor pronunciation, but in words and the meaning of words. In this strange maze of roundabouts, common to our southern folk was, ‘skeen’ meaning cool, and ‘fresh’ is when something or someone is attempting to be cool, but failing... I think. And clothes are ‘garms’ and a drunk person is ‘leathered’ – all completely alien to me, to the complete astonishment of our friends. However, and likewise, trying to describe to them what we mean by being ‘paggered’, what on earth ‘eyyup’ was as a greeting and that ‘braying’ was not actually being a donkey but meaning beating someone up came with equal eyebrows raised. To reassure those that may now be feeling dialectally challenged, a good percentage of those present, old and young alike, weren’t sure of many of the words, regardless of origin. The concept of dialect tends to be attached to an older generation, and for that seen as on the wane. But as experienced over our New Year’s meal, newer dialect continues to be invented and used by younger people. So despite this age of mass communication, over the internet, texting, television, online video and so much more that might merge and homogenise our language, it seems we will be hanging on to our regional dialect for years to come. Maybe it’s a means of identification with ourselves and our region. Maybe we all, if secretly, prefer to be a bit rebellious and disregard ‘received pronunciations’. Maybe it’s a matter of the infamous Yorkshire pride that we don’t want to adopt the words of southern folk’! Regardless, I think dialects are a good thing, and it’s wonderful that they are still in effect. It keeps the language varied and interesting; and it gives us a sense of regional identity with the more traditional words providing unique insight into the history of local people. Speaking dialect ultimately represents freedom and individuality, and should be cherished and enjoyed.

Oaken Grove Surfers (Haxby and Wigginton Youth and Community Association)

Last December there was an article in the Handy Mag about Haxby and Wigginton Youth and Community Association being awarded the Duke of York’s Initiative for ‘its excellent work in its own community.’ Oaken Grove Surfers is part of Haxby and Wigginton Youth and Community Association, which operates in the Oaken Grove Community Centre. It has been offering one to one instruction in computer and internet skills for four years now. It is staffed by two volunteer organisers and a number of volunteer ‘mentors’ who help the learners through the online courses. These are provided by UK Online and help beginners become confident and competent in emailing, attaching photographs, etc. to emails, shopping online and of course, staying safe online. Other computer skills are on offer and we charge £2 per 30 minute one to one session, for however many weeks it takes for the learners to become confident.

possible if you wish, to transfer to regular sessions. If you are a potential learner or mentor please come along to the Community Centre (off Oaken Grove, Haxby) either on Monday morning between 10 am and 12 noon or Thursday afternoon between 2pm and 4pm in school term time to see what we do. We will be glad to welcome you. Oaken Grove Community Centre’s telephone number is 01904 769176.

Although Oaken Grove Surfers has helped many people locally (not just in Haxby and Wigginton, but beyond) to become computer savvy, we are sure there are still people in the area who would benefit from our courses. We don’t ‘teach’ in the accepted sense, each learner sits in front of a laptop connected to the internet, with a mentor alongside, to guide them through the courses. At the end, the learner can print off a certificate showing he or she has completed the ‘Online Basics’ course. Just now, we are short of some relief mentors. If you have reasonable computer skills and would like to share them, we would be glad to hear from you. After you have done some relief sessions, it may be
