We are now into our fourteenth year of publishing the Handy Mag. The news is often full of the demise of newspapers and print in general and the subsequent rise of digital news, advertising and, well…everything. Here at the Handy Mag, whilst we do have a website and have been known to partake in a little social media marketing, we still believe that there is nothing like printed publications to reach our readership!

elcome to our July edition.
This month we’ve packed the magazine full of things to keep you entertained from agricultural shows to music festivals, Rose festivals, shows at York Theatre Royal, Haxby Carnival and Huntington Scarecrow festival. Make sure you have a look through our vast listings and adverts to find an amazing local event perfect for you.
I was reading a newspaper article recently that said that printed publications still out-perform digital in terms of trust and reliability. How can you really know whether an article on social media is ‘fake news’ - to coin a well-known American President’s saying! At the Handy Mag, what happens in our local area is important to us because we are local, and we take our readers’ and advertisers trust in us very seriously. We work very hard to ensure that every edition is filled to the brim with interesting information about both our businesses and the local community. Whilst being in business inevitably has it’s challenges, the Handy Mags continue to be well read and used in the area. So a huge thank you to all of our readers
and advertisers for supporting us over the years and here’s to a bright publishing future! We would all like to congratulate our Admin Assistant Holly and her family on the birth of her baby. We’ll all be round for a cuddle soon! Until next month…

Short Story Dolphin Watching
“It’s a tricky walk down.” Sheila grabbed a clump of seagrass to steady herself. “I feel like a mountain goat.” She had picked up a leaflet for a dolphin-watching boat trip that set off from the harbour, but Royce had turned his nose up. “If we sit on a beach that boat will sail past,” he’d said, parking on the coastal road’s narrow verge. “Whatever they see on the boat, we can see from the shore.” “You’re such a cheap-skate, Royce,” Sheila had snapped crossly. “We’re on holiday for goodness sake!” “I’m not being cheap,” Royce had replied sulkily. “I just thought you’d enjoy it more on a beach.” “I’m sorry.” Sheila backed down when she saw she’d offended him. “It’s a lovely idea.” “Quite right,” Royce had shrugged, “I’m just trying to give you a nice holiday.” With the air not completely cleared between them, Sheila had avoided the slightest complaint while stumbling behind Royce down the two miles of nettle-lined track to the beach. She never said a word when she got a splinter in her bottom from a six-bar gate, and cheerfully skidded on lose shale down the sheer cliff face. After an hour of scraped knees and nettle stings they finally stood on the shoreline. The waves shimmered in the hot sun, and the sand of the little cove was the colour of clotted cream. It was also covered in beach towels. “I’m amazed it’s so popular,” Sheila observed. “It’s so dicey to get to.” “Everyone’s had the same idea,” said Royce. “No point wasting money on pointless boat trips.” They found a rock to perch upon, where they could see the sea over rows of colourful windbreaks.
“Incredible,” Royce agreed, peering through his binoculars. Sheila looked around. There were families building sandcastles, some eating ice lollies, some leaning over rock pools with crab lines. “Where’s everyone getting their lollies from?” “Must have brought them with them,” Royce said, feigning interest in a seagull. A girl walked by licking a cornet. “Excuse me!” Sheila called, “Where did you get that from?” “The ice cream van in the car park” the girl said. “What car park?” The girl looked at Sheila as though she’d landed from Mars. “Up there,” she pointed, “it’s a two minute walk.” “Why did we park miles away, Royce?” Sheila turned to her husband. “There’s a car park.” “Look, here comes the dolphin-spotting boat.” Royce said, pretending not to hear. “How much does the car park cost?” Sheila asked. “It’s quite dear,” Royce said. “How much?” Sheila insisted. “Three pounds,” Royce mumbled.
“I can’t believe all these families have made it down here,” Sheila marvelled, “and there are no facilities for miles.”
“Well, you know what you can do?” Sheila said. “You can go back up the cliff and bring the car round.” She took the binoculars out of his hand. “And then get me an ice-cream. I’ll let you know if I see any dolphins.”
“Yes, it’s very secluded,” Royce said.
By Jackie Brewster
“Look, they’ve got a double buggy down here.” Sheila was staggered. “And those teenagers have brought body boards.”

Cybercrime by PCSO Andy Smith 5520 these apps and sites work. This can help you to understand any potential threats and talk to your children about them.
By taking a few simple security measures and thinking carefully about what information you are putting online, the chances of becoming a victim of cybercrime can be reduced dramatically. Modern Technology such as mobile devices and international computer gaming is now a part of everyday modern society. Demand for quick time information, purchasing and instant online social activity is widespread across the globe – as is, unfortunately, the opportunity for Cybercrime. More and more criminals are exploiting the speed, convenience and anonymity of the internet to commit a diverse range of criminal activity. Cybercrime has many guises and much of it consists of traditional types of crime being committed – or partly committed – online, for example bullying and harassment, financial and identity fraud, sexual abuse and exploitation.
It is not just children and young people who fall victim to online exploitation, many adults do too. North Yorkshire Police are receiving an increasing number of reports about individuals on dating sites who have been tricked to sending money to a potential partner, only to find out that person was in fact a criminal.
IDENTITY FRAUD
Identity fraud is also a significant threat to adults, with criminals piecing together personal and financial information from various websites and apps. Make sure you check the validity of sites if you are purchasing items or booking holidays, never provide bank details via email if you are not one hundred percent sure of the receiver of your email, and always make sure you know who you are talking to online.

PARENTAL CONTROL
Parental controls are key in keeping your family safe online. They are available through your internet provider and are a quick and easy way of preventing children from accessing inappropriate sites on the internet. What is vitally important, however, is to talk to children and young people about their online activity. Whether it’s Facebook or Facetime, Snapchat or Skype, or online gaming and shopping, it is important you have basic knowledge of how

Planning a building project? Richard Webster, owner of Prospect Design, answers your questions... required) and then building regulations approval. We’ll act as your agent to oversee both processes.
What's the difference between planning and building regulations?
I'm planning a building project where do I start?
A lot of potential clients ring us unsure of how to start the process. We’re always happy to talk to clients about projects and give informal advice over the phone. The next stage is to arrange a free, no obligation, initial consultation allowing us to have a chat about the project, discuss options, highlight any issues and get a real feel for what it is you are looking for. We can then provide a fixed price quotation for the works.
How do I know if you're the right company to help with my project? The consultation not only allows us to get a feel for the project you are planning but is an opportunity for you to ask us any questions which we are always happy to answer.
Will my project need planning approval?
Not all projects require planning approval. Depending on size and other constraints many extensions, loft conversions and indeed barn conversions fall under PD (Permitted Development) meaning that a formal planning application will not be required.
What are the key stages of the Project?
The most successful projects start with a good design brief that establishes what the project hopes to achieve. This is different for every client. Draft sketches then show how your goals will be accomplished, bearing in mind there may be different ways to achieve what you are looking for. The first regulatory hurdle is planning (if
In simple terms Planning is; can I? Building Regulations is; how will I? By submitting a planning application you’re seeking permission from the local planning authority to allow your project to go ahead. Building Regulations relate to how the build is physically constructed and set standards for structural integrity, energy efficiency etc.
We've got our approvals what next?
It’s time to put your project out to tender. The most common issues can arise when a builder is asked for a quotation too soon. Detailed drawings are a great starting point but if these are backed up by a Schedule of Works detailing exactly what you require, quotations will be more accurate. I would always recommend getting at least three quotations from different builders before deciding on one.
How quickly can we get started?

OUT & ABOUT THIS SUMMER
The Dragons are coming!
The 16th York Rotary Annual Dragon Boat Challenge will take place on Sunday 15th July. Once again, 36 teams will battle it out on the River Ouse, between Scarborough Railway Bridge and Lendal Bridge, for ©Chris Shepherd the Challenge Trophy and other prestigious awards, including awards for the fastest Charity Team, fastest Armed Services Team, and of course the “Best Dressed Team” trophy. Each crew is made up of 16 paddlers paced by a drummer at the bow and guided by a helmsman at the stern. The idea is that power and rhythm are combined to achieve maximum acceleration and speed over a 250 metre course. This is a visually exciting event and the crews learn very quickly that the best results come from working as a team. The teams have an enormous amount of fun and you
can expect a very colourful display of wacky and inventive fancy dress outfits. Last year, after 15 years of running this event, the organisers were delighted to announce that the cumulative amount raised, for a whole host of worthwhile local charities, had exceeded £1,000,000! The Rotary Club of York’s nominated charities for the 2018 event are York Mind and Citizens Advice York and there are many ways you can help support the Dragon Boat Challenge and help them to head towards making £2million for local charities. This is a such a fun event not to be missed – as well as the Racing, there will be a Gala on the North Bank of the Ouse, with music, fun and games, food and festivities as Charity stalls line the bank and create a wonderful atmosphere for everyone to enjoy. Entries for the 2018 race have now closed, however, you can find out more by visiting www.yorkrotary.co.uk

Highlights announced for York's new floral festival Bloom! 5-8 July 2018 •
• The gardens of York Medical Society
F
our days of floral spectacles will see a village green, hidden gardens and even a floral boat blossom in historic York during a new flower festival marking the 250th anniversary of the Ancient Society of York Florists, the oldest of its kind in the world. The brain child of Make It York, the festival is supported by York Business Improvement District and dozens of local businesses and organisations. Highlights of Bloom! include: • The annual summer Flower Show of the Ancient Society of York Florists, sponsored by TalkTalk, will offer a two-day spectacle of roses, sweetpeas, geraniums and glorious floral arrangements in Parliament Street in the heart of York. Visitors will also be treated to large floral installations, a farmers’ market and a one-day flower market. • A Vegetarian Street Food Market also known as ‘The Vegetable Patch’ will provide delicious sustenance for the body. • An urban village green complete with real grass, meadow flowers and white picket fence, will take over St Sampson’s Square with the help of WowGrass. • York’s Hidden Gardens: A Trail; will unearth the secret green spaces behind the walls of some of York’s great buildings. • Bloom! Window Dressing Competition. Sponsored by York Conservation Trust. • York’s First Floral Boat: The Captain James Cook will be sending charters out for the four days of Bloom! An ideal way to view the city from the River Ouse whilst taking tea upon York’s first floral boat – particularly apt given that 2018 is the 250th anniversary of the famous voyages taken by the boat’s namesake. Flower Club through the sponsorship of Ice Cubed Consulting. An outdoor exhibition of the International Garden Photographer of the Year set in York’s Museum Gardens and sponsored by NFU Countryside. Here too, yoga in the gardens, story-telling and a family festival on the Library Lawn alongside York Explore Library with fun for every member of the family. Coney Street will be transformed into the Curious Realm of Floribunda – visitors can expect traditional plants and flowers to be interspersed with fabric creations for a remarkable spectacle. Sponsored by GT Flowers Ltd and with the support of numerous businesses and individuals from the city. Demonstrating that you don’t need a huge garden to engage with horticulture, the Miniature Magic Garden Competition on Library Lawn will see 30 small-scale gardens created by primary schools from across York in a series of brightly coloured wheelbarrows. Sponsored by Hungate Regeneration with Yorganics and Stones4Homes Ltd. By happy coincidence, a Secret Garden next to York Theatre Royal created to coincide with the production of the play of the same name will be opening up this July. Sponsored by Northminster. Further pop-up gardens will also be appearing at Exhibition Square, sponsored by Nestlé; and in St Helen’s Square, sponsored by McArthurGlen Designer Outlet.
There are also many other events in and around York as well as talks and events about the science of plants at York St John University. The full programme of events is available at www.visityork.org or www.bloomyork.com

Lemon & Almond Sandwich Cookies Makes 10. Ready in 40 minutes, plus chilling and cooling
cutter, stamp out 20 rounds, re-rolling the dough as necessary. Place on the baking sheets and chill in the fridge for 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 190°C, fan 170°C, gas mark 5.
4
Lightly brush around the edge of half the cookie dough rounds with a little milk. Drop ½ tsp of lemon curd in the centre of these rounds. Carefully top with the rest of the cookie dough rounds, gently pressing to seal the edges.
5
Glaze the tops lightly with milk and sprinkle with the extra caster sugar and flaked almonds. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until pale golden. Leave to cool completely on the baking sheets for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely.
TIP: These delightful crisp and buttery lemon and almond cookies have a tangy layer of lemon curd in the middle.
INGREDIENTS: • 115g unsalted butter, softened • 115g caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling • 1 tsp almond extract • 1 large egg yolk • 200g plain flour, plus extra for dusting • Milk, for sealing and glazing • 2-3 tbsp good quality lemon curd • 2 tbsp flaked almonds
1 2 3
Place the butter, sugar and almond extract in a mixing bowl and beat with a hand-held electric whisk until pale and fluffy. Beat in the egg yolk then gradually beat in the flour to form a crumbly dough. Gather the dough with your hands and knead lightly until smooth. Wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes, or until firm. Line a baking sheet with baking paper. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to 2mm thick. Using a 7cm round fluted cookie
Replace the lemon curd with jam, marmalade or chocolate hazelnut spread for a change of flavour. Remember the filling will be very hot straight out of the oven, so be sure to leave to cool completely before tucking in!

TOP TIPS FROM A DENTAL PROFESSIONAL

aving recently attended a National Dental Conference it was reassuring to see that dentists are now being encouraged to see their patients as a whole person and not ‘ just a set of teeth’. by Christine Parker BDS (GDC 72136)
Many of you may have heard of the links between the mouth and heart disease but other significant health conditions such as diabetes and dementia are now being linked to the presence of oral bacterial and the effect it can have in the bloodstream.
Here at Howardian Dental we are passionate about assessing your oral health and providing advice on how to reduce the effect of dental disease on you as a whole. Dentists have always had an interest in what you eat from a diet/tooth decay viewpoint but we’re now also looking at how small changes might have a big impact on your overall health. Surely not at the dentist I hear you say! Well the more we healthcare professionals work together to help our patients the better the outcomes. So come and see what we can do for you. Our oral health educator has recently passed her Nutrition course and has a very sensible and down to earth approach to providing advice tailored to you.
Our small team of experienced, friendly staff are focused on you. You’ll see the same faces each time you visit, allowing us to really get to know you and offer truly personal service. We offer easy access with free parking right outside. The number 1 and 13 bus routes are directly opposite too, just hop off at the Ryedale Court Shopping Centre.

Motoring
Should you buy an automatic car? Pros and cons explained. shifts, making them ideal for sports cars. There’s no real penalty in performance or economy, but at low speeds in stop-start traffic dual-clutch boxes can be jerky and unpleasant. Early units can be unreliable and costly to repair.
British motorists traditionally favoured manual gearboxes, but automatics are increasingly popular. Tom Wiltshire explains everything you need to know. Though early automatic gearboxes tended to dent performance, fuel economy and driving pleasure, times have moved on, and the modern automatic can sometimes be a better choice than the manual gearbox. Some performance automatics can actually beat the manuals off the line, while the cash-conscious may enjoy lower CO2 emissions and higher fuel economy. A good automatic transmission also makes for a relaxing drive, giving your left leg a rest and letting the car do the work. Always test drive a car, however, as there are still awful automatic gearboxes out there. Automatics tend to be more expensive to buy, and much more expensive to repair if they go wrong. Here’s our guide to the different types of automatic gearbox available today.
Torque converter/traditional auto
Though now much refined and improved, these automatics have been available since the 1940s, and use a fluid-filled coupling in place of a traditional clutch. Torque converter automatics tend to offer very smooth shifts, making for a comfortable ride. They can be slow to pick up, though. However, modern units – such as the ZF ‘box fitted to dozens of high performance cars – offer no discernible penalty to performance or economy.
Dual-clutch gearbox
The dual-clutch gearbox uses a pair of robotised clutches working together to provide lightning-fast
Manufacturers have different names for them – the Volkswagen group use DSG, Porsche PDK, Renault EDC, Hyundai and Kia DCT – but fundamentally they all work the same way.
CVT
Standing for ‘continuously variable transmission’, CVTs do not have standard ‘gears’. Instead, an infinitely changeable single ratio theoretically ensures correct gearing for maximum power or economy, depending on conditions. Around since the 1950s, the CVT ‘box can be incredibly economical when driven carefully. However, they can provide a somewhat disconnected feel to the car – and attempts at rapid acceleration are usually met by spiralling engine revs and lots of noise. Their smoothness and variable nature makes them ideal in a hybrid car.
Automated manual transmission
Cheap, easy to install and lightweight, these gearboxes leave existing clutch and gearbox operations in place, but simply robotise the action. Automated manuals are often despised, can be horrifically jerky, and dawdle under hard acceleration. In fact, automated manual transmissions have ruined a fair few cars, so are probably best avoided.
Electric vehicle
Electric cars don’t technically have a transmission, but are worth looking at if you’re considering an automatic car. They act almost identically in most conditions, with two pedals and no gears to shift, but also have a totally smooth and silent powertrain and zero tailpipe emissions. EV’s aren’t ideal for everyone – you’ll need somewhere to charge, and if you regularly do longer trips you’ll definitely need some form of combustion engine. However, if your circumstances suit, you could be a convert to the electric lifestyle. By James Baggot

Mauritius: Natural World Down in the south west, beyond the tea plantations of Darling Wood, the road climbs through scented pines towards the Grand Bassin sacred lake and Hindu shrine. Nearby, the Native Garden of Petrin displays the lovely red ‘earring’, or national flower, and an array of medicinal plants. But most enticing of all in the area is the Black River Gorges National Park, covering over 6,000 hectares of forest laced with scenic trails. Echo parakeets flash emerald green along the Macchabee ridge, white tropicbirds flit through the air with the grace of ballet dancers. On the very edge of the gorge the Black River viewpoint can be easily accessed, a breathtaking place where, below the jagged peaks, the thickly-wooded slopes tumble down to the sea
I
n the southern reaches of the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is blessed with idyllic beaches, but a few steps inland another kind of paradise waits to be discovered, stunning and lush, as the island endeavours to protect its wildlife and dwindling forest. Great swathes were lost to timber and plantations. The remainder covers about 18% of the land, only 2% of it native trees, but nestling in gorges or climbing to mountain tops it still harbours 670 species of plants. Meanwhile, imported casuarinas sway along the shore, banyans thrive and Chinese guava bushes spread unhindered. There are fan-shaped traveller’s palms and unusual trees protected in botanical gardens, including the hyophorbe amaricaulis palm in Curepipe and the rare talipot in Pamplemousse, which takes up to 60 years to flower and then dies. As for the wildlife, boars and Javanese deer live alongside the long-tailed macaques, the ornate rainbow-coloured geckos and thousands of fruit bats, or ‘flying foxes’, the only native mammals, with wings up to a metre across. Although the dodo is extinct, other native birds may fare better, such as the pink pigeons and Mauritius kestrels breeding once again in protected areas.
More views can be enjoyed along the road down to the coast, most dramatic the precipitous peak on Le Morne peninsula where runaway slaves jumped to their death. Chamarel is a must-see, starting with the island’s highest waterfall leaping down 83 metres. But the top attraction is the legendary waves of ‘Coloured Earth’ spread across a slope, red, purple, pink, silver and gold. Now protected by walkways, this unique phenomenon was caused by the uneven cooling of lava, and you can buy a sample in a bottle. Shake as you will, the colours will separate again within a day. On the central plateau, the Deer’s Hole caldera is equally impressive. Its slopes are cloaked with vegetation, its floor is choked with silt but as you stand on the rim between heaven and earth, you look across an island bristling with eerie peaks, the Rampart, the Guard, the unmistakable silhouette of the Thumb or Pieter Both, resembling a human figure, named after a drowned admiral. Legend has it that if this pinnacle falls, disaster will strike. So far, fortunately, Pieter Both has kept his head and as kestrels soar above the rustling slopes, you can enjoy the natural world of a truly stunning island. By Solange Hando

Resolving Conflict By Jeff Bentley at TLC Counselling
There is strong evidence that feeling close to and valued by other people is a fundamental human need and one that helps us to function well in the world. There are times though when some social interactions fall short of making us feel close and supported in fact they make us feel exactly the opposite. This is particularly present when we find ourselves in conflict with someone. Conflict is described as an intrinsic and inevitable part of our lives and is often associated with feelings of frustration and anger. It is how we deal with conflict which determines the effects we experience both during and after the conflict. I remember a time when I experienced conflict with someone. Our contact became increasingly difficult and I recall feeling anger and frustration. Eventually our contact became so uncomfortable that I broke total contact and our friendship was lost. I was left with feelings of sadness, disappointment and some anger. Although contact had ceased my sense of wellbeing had reduced. I now believe there were actions I could have considered taking which may have resolved our conflict and improved the sense of wellbeing for both of us. The following are the actions I could have taken to help resolve our conflict: • Acknowledged the conflict was about me. • I realised that I had needs that were not being met. These included recognition for my efforts, being appreciated and feeling encouraged. My pride was dented, and I felt angry that these needs were not being met. • Taken the initiative. • Before the hurt began to accumulate and fester I could have been the one to suggest that we met to discuss my experiences and feelings. • Acknowledged the other person’s feelings. • I would have needed to be prepared to try and understand the other person’s feelings. Also, to try and demonstrate my understanding even if I had not agreed. • Confessed my part in the conflict. • I would have needed to be prepared to admit my own mistakes, behaviours and attitudes. • Avoided being focused on who is to blame. • The focus would have needed to be on the problem not the other person. • Cooperated by adjusting to the needs of the other person. • I would have needed to reduce my self-
centeredness and focus on the needs of the other person. • Accepted that it is unrealistic to expect everyone to agree about everything. • Accepted that it is possible to disagree without being disagreeable. I’m pleased to say that since I broke contact with the person concerned I have made use of the above and find that I am now able to have contact whilst acknowledging that we will not always see eye-toeye. These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,
Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers
lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or
small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Whiskey came to the centre after his owner could sadly no longer look after him, he is such a kind, gentle and sweet natured cat who misses being part of family life. Whiskey has always been a housecat so we are looking for a home where he will either remain a housecat or a very rural location as he is not used to roads or traffic. He is suitable to live with children of junior school age and over. Sheba is a sweet girl who came to the centre after her loving owner became unwell and could no longer keep her. Sheba spends most of her days looking out of the window, snuggled up
in bed or sunning herself in her back run. She will always come to say hello and stay for a fuss. Sheba would be best suited in a home where she is the only cat and any children need to be of secondary school age and over.

At this time of year, we often see a lot of itchy dogs, the cause of this can be due to a hypersensitivity to food or plants. Approximately 10-15% of dogs in the UK are affected by allergic disease although they may not show signs if they are managed well.

Murphy needs a home! Murphy is a young excitable cat with bags of energy. Unfortunately, being cooped up in the Adoption Centre is not the ideal situation for him and he has become a bit of a handful. He is a great cat with a sweet side to him but he is quite boisterous and can sometimes become too rough. Murphy will need a home with plenty of space for him to explore and lots of stimulation and ‘play’ opportunities. We’re pretty sure that once Murphy has the chance to feel the breeze blowing through his whiskers as he investigates his new surroundings he will calm down and be a much more relaxed and gentle chap, albeit with a lovable mischievous streak! He just needs a helping hand from someone like you… If you would like to consider adopting this fine cat then please call York Cats Protection on 01904 760356 or contact us through our website www.york. cats.org.uk for further details.
Allergies often result in the skin in the ears, around the eyes, on the belly and on the feet becoming red and itchy. However, other signs such as runny eyes, wheezing or diarrhoea can be also be seen. If you notice your dog scratching more than usual or see any red areas, it is important to have them checked by a vet as we can get the inflammation and itching under control and try to find the cause of the problem. Unfortunately, allergic skin disease is a lifelong condition and can be very difficult to get under control. To start with, we may take skin samples to check for parasites, bacteria or yeast. If these samples are clear, then a blood sample can be taken to see what allergens may be causing the signs. A food trial may also be recommended to try and rule out dietary issues. If the blood sample shows that there are positive results for allergens such as pollens or grasses, injections can be made up specifically for these. The injections are then given monthly to desensitise your pet against the allergens. If there are positive results for food allergens, then a diet can be chosen which excludes these ingredients. It is important to maintain a healthy skin barrier in allergic dogs, this can be done be adding essential fatty acids to the diet and using medicated shampoos that prevent the skin becoming dry and flaky. Regular flea control is important as flea bites can be very itchy, resulting in a flare up of the skin disease. Regular ear cleaning and washing the paws after walks also helps to reduce allergens on the skin. Sometimes antibiotics or steroids may be required to get a flare-up under control, the key to long-term success is to use a combination of therapies and adapt these treatments as required. For more advice about itchy pets, please come and speak to us or visit www.avactaanimalhealth.com.

Gardening Essential Scent. By Pippa Greenwood
A
garden without perfume is, well, like apple pie without the cream!
However good your flower beds and borders may look, however well-clad with climbers your walls and fences are, if there are no wonderful scents and perfumes your garden will be missing a vital ingredient. That’s not to say you have to sacrifice the colour and texture when you use perfumed plants. Far from it – many heavily-scented flowers are also really good-looking. So what is perfume all about and how do you make the most of it? Perfume plays a role in plant evolution and their success; in many cases it is there to attract attention to the flower and to entice a suitable pollinator. Once lured over by the perfume, the insect can enjoy the nectar the flower offers
70
If you enjoy sitting out on your patio or in your back yard after sundown then, as well as having daytime perfume, be sure to include some flowers that will be at their best in the evening. and pollinate it in the process, so increasing the chances of it producing a new generation. There are a good number of plants which produce an alluring perfume during the evening or nighttime. At this time of day there are not likely to be bees or butterflies about but there will be moths, especially during the summer months. Moths can be useful pollinators and although a plant like the sweetly-perfumed night-scented stock may not have flamboyant flowers, it will be successfully pollinated. For most of us, the stronger the perfume the better. But weather conditions can alter the level of perfume that reaches your nose. In a wind-swept
spot the perfume can literally be blown away, and if temperatures are unusually low this too can cause scent levels to drop. So bear this in mind when choosing where to put your perfumed plants. Smaller or more subtly-scented plants grown for their perfume can pass unnoticed if sited too far away from where you can enjoy them. The classic examples are some of the polyanthus or the miniature iris, whose perfume will easily pass you by if they are grown in a far-flung border. Plant smaller perfumed plants in raised areas or perhaps in pots so that you can enjoy all they have to offer! If you’ve space for a small pergola, it has the potential to make a great home for some perfumed climbers, and what could be lovelier than to wander from one part of the garden to another via a tunnel of perfume? There are many perfumed roses which make great pergola plants and have flexible stems, such as the repeat flowering climbers ‘Ena Harkness’ (red) or ‘New Dawn’ (pale, dusky pink) or ‘Zephirine Drouhin’ (brightest pink). Make sure that the air coming into your house via

windows left ajar is delicately fragrant. Pop smaller perfumed plants such as ‘Nemesia Fragrant Cloud’ or lavenders into window boxes or wall baskets, and enjoy their wonderful perfume as it wafts into bedrooms, bathrooms and sitting rooms. If you enjoy sitting out on your patio or in your back yard after sundown then, as well as having daytime perfume, be sure to include some flowers that will be at their best in the evening. For a warm summer’s evening the small creamy-white flowers of night-scented stock take some beating, or if you want something a little showier then try the night-perfumed nicotianas or tobacco plants such as Nicotiana sylvestris. Make sure that patio pots and other containers have their fair share of perfumed plants – vibrant colours can be provided by most bedding plants, but try to include a few scented stunners as well. How about some hyacinths or one of my favourites, the Heliotrope or cherry pie, with its flowers in white or shades of purple and whose densely packed flower heads will produce perfume throughout the summer?
Wall shrubs are a perfect way to disguise a lessthan-attractive house or garage wall. For a sunny spot the blue-flowered Ceaonothus produces a distinctly honey-perfumed scent, or go more exotic and plant up a wall on a well-drained soil with the pineapple broom Cytissus batanderei – with its lovely silvery-coloured foliage and bright yellow flowers it looks sensational, but once you sniff those pineapple-scented blooms you’ll be hooked. Create an arbour from a readily-available kit or from scratch if you’re handy with a saw, then clothe it in perfumed climbers such as sweetly-scented roses or, if the arbour is in a shadier spot, why not use the spicily-scented honeysuckle? You’ll be in heaven sitting on the arbour’s seat in the shade of the plants with their flowers’ scents all around! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com and you’ll find some great gardening items: Nemaslug, green controls for leatherjackets, chafer grubs, ants and greenfly, plus garden plant supports, raised bed kits, Easy-Tunnels, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and more! Or why not book Pippa for a gardening talk?

Books Holiday Reads
Sun-lounger worthy reads to keep you occupied this summer. SALVAGE THE BONES - JESMYN WARD
With so many new releases each year, it’s all too easy for books to get buried in the sands of time. Salvage the Bones deserves to be unburied. 15-year-old Esch lives with her three brothers, her alcoholic father and the memory of her mother in a crumbling shack in Mississippi. Hurricane Katrina is on the way and the family is woefully unprepared. If you’re a fan of Alice Walker or Harper Lee, and love getting lost in a devastatingly beautiful read, this one is for you.
THE LOST FLOWERS OF ALICE HART - HOLLY RINGLAND
Alice spends her days hiding from her father and helping her bruised, fragile mother tend to the garden. She’s kept away from school, family and the local village. But then one day tragedy strikes and Alice’s world starts to open up. Can she put her demons aside, or is she destined to repeat her parents’ mistakes? A perfect summer read, although you may find it a struggle to tear yourself away.
HOW I LOSE YOU - KATE MCNAUGHTON
How I Lose You is a love story, told backwards. Eva’s husband Adam dies in chapter one. As Eva struggles to come to terms with her loss, we learn about their story in a series of flashbacks. Back in the present day, Eva stumbles across an email in Adam’s inbox that suggests he was hiding something. In her search to uncover his secret, Eva discovers shocking truths about herself.
WISHES UNDER THE WILLOW TREE - PHAEDRA PATRICK
Benedict Stone is a jeweller in a quiet country village, as was his father before him. Benedict’s marriage is going through a rocky patch, so the last thing he needs is a teenage niece he’s never met
turning up on his doorstep. Together, the unlikely duo work to win Benedict’s wife back. Wishes Under the Willow Tree is an enjoyable, easy read, and as added bonus, you’ll learn a little about gem stones along the way.
THE FAMILY NEXT DOOR - SALLY HEPWORTH
Pleasant Court is a nice neighbourhood, full of respectable families. People don’t talk about their problems. So when Isabelle Heatherington, single and attractive, moves in, she ruffles more than a few feathers. The secrets people have tried so hard to bury start coming out, as Isabelle seems to know rather a lot about her new neighbours. An enjoyable domestic drama, with a few twists and turns to keep you sitting by the pool until the sun goes down.
I STILL DREAM - JAMES SMYTHE
It’s 1997. In between making mix-tapes and arguing with her mum, Laura Bow finds time to create a computer programme. She calls it Organon. At first, Organon is just something to tell her thoughts and feelings to – an online journal that talks back. But as the years pass, it becomes clear that Laura has created an AI with more potential than she could ever have imagined. A gripping read.

To date we have recorded over 100 men, 64 from York. It is thought that there are still others who served but have not been recorded. There will a range of fun and games, with Donkey Rides (back from last year) Rodeo Rides for both adults and children, games, stalls and lots of refreshments...something for everyone. The money we raise will go towards the Playground Project and we are very grateful this year to be supported by the New Earswick Parish Council.

If this applies to you and you would like your National Service recorded please telephone Ralph Peacock on 01904 421656 for details. To quote from the National Service men we have spoken to, “We are all growing old and in a few years we will be just a memory” and “Glad that someone is pulling all this together, as it will soon be lost history”.
