W

elcome to November’s edition.

November is a month which has lots going for it! Forget that the nights have drawn in and the weather’s unpredictable – think about fireworks, bonfires and scrumptious cinder toffee! With numerous local firework displays taking place it’s a time to enjoy the sparklers and Catherine Wheels (safely, of course!) and then look forward to Christmas. However, November is also a sombre month: Remembrance Sunday takes place on the 9th November. With the centenary of the outbreak of World War One being marked this year, we have a double page feature detailing the services, parades and festivals of Remembrance - a chance for all of us to pay our respects.

132 SAMPLE PAINT COLOURS ALWAYS STOCKED We are passionate about quality and provide an individual personal service with free measuring and advice. Quality made curtains, roman blinds, cushions, upholstery, pelmets, footstools and headboards. All backed up with a friendly reliable service. Suppliers of fine fabrics including: Jane Churchill, Moon, Casamance, Casedeco, James Hare, Kobe, Blendworth, Voyage and many more. Extensive selection of curtain tracks, poles and accessories

The end of November also marks the run up to the festive season! With Christmas Light Switch-Ons, Santa Dashes, choral concerts and much more, it’s a time to get that Christmas cake started and perhaps get ahead to avoid last-minute stressful shopping trips by visiting the local markets and retailers. Last month the Handy Mag was really groaning under the weight of so many local events, community groups and businesses so this month we have decided to add a few more pages to accomodate more of everything. Who knew that an extra 16 pages would be so much more work?! Sorry team! If you would like to publicise your business or a local event in December or January please let us know as soon as possible. Until next month…

bringing back the best sellers, but it was time to grow the Fair from another angle. Expanding the shopping time was the best solution as we hope that by extending over the weekend more people will be able to attend our Fair.”

Castle Howard at Christmas

NSPCC CHRISTMAS FAIR EXPANDS TO A THREE DAY EVENT AT CASTLE HOWARD TO CATCH SATURDAY SHOPPERS Thursday 6th to Saturday 8th November 2014 The annual NSPCC Christmas Fair at Castle Howard, for the first time in its 11 year history, is expanding to become a three day event to include a Saturday. Shopping dates for the Fair this year will start at 5pm – 9pm on Thursday 6th November with a special preview evening, continue all day Friday 7th 9.30am to 5pm and all day Saturday 8th November 9.30am to 3pm to catch the weekend shoppers and families. Day tickets are £8 each, can be bought on the door, and include entry to Castle Howard gardens and Lakeside playground so children (under 13 free) and fathers can

join in the fun too. Tickets for the Thursday evening preview need to be pre-booked and always sell out fast, priced at £15 to include a glass of wine and canapés. For the first year all tickets for the Fair can be booked on line at www. nspcccastlehowardchristmasfair. co.uk “Due to the popularity of this Fair we are expanding to include the Saturday which will help us raise more funds for such an important and worthwhile cause,” says Harriette Murray Wells, the new joint chairman of the NSPCC Castle Howard Christmas Fair Committee which organises the big event. “We asked ourselves – how do we make more than the £40,000 we made for the NSPCC last year? Each year, we invite new high quality stalls, as well as

The NSPCC Christmas Fair is set in the stunning surroundings of Castle Howard with the kind support of the Howard family. Described as the ‘best charity fair in the country’ by previous visitors, it will have 65 stalls on offer this year. Sellers are carefully vetted each year to offer the best range of goods to cover all shoppers’ needs, tastes and price ranges with 35 new stalls added for 2014. Products sold range from toys to books, jewellery, gardening, men’s and ladies clothes, kitchen and homeware to food and drink. Funds raised by the Fair help provide NSPCC services for children and families in the North Yorkshire region, as well as across the UK. “We’re delighted to work with the NSPCC again and to announce that the Fair will run over a third day,” says The Hon. Simon Howard. “We look forward to welcoming a family crowd on the Saturday. For the first time we will open the playground and Lakeside cafe alongside the house, gardens and The Courtyard.” The event attracts some fantastic sponsors from the local area as well as further afield. Main sponsors this year include The Rowse Family Trust, JM Finn & Co Investment Management, TATE Residential, Rodgers of York, The Feathers hotel in Helmsley and The Orangery Settrington.

A FASCINATING DISPLAY OF LOCAL WORLD WAR MEMORABILIA BY

HAXBY & WIGGINTON LOCAL HISTORY GROUP

T

here are 161 men from Haxby and Wigginton who answered the call to arms during World War 1 and they are all listed on the Honours Board at Haxby Memorial Hall. The Board was unveiled at the rededication of the Hall on 2nd August this year to commemorate to outbreak of WW1. Haxby and Wigginton Local History Group have worked for many years to build up a picture of the lives of some of those who lived and served in the area during the war. The memorabilia and information uncovered by the group will be on display in St Nicholas Church Hall on Remembrance Sunday weekend and primary school children will be invited to view the display on the 7th November. Since the photo of the board opposite was taken the group have identified another man whose name has since been added to the Board. If you’d like to see the amazing display for yourself, it will be open to the public on Saturday 8th (1-4pm) and Sunday 9th November (2-4pm)

WAR AND PEACE In November we remember Armistice Day and it’s always a moving and contemplative time of the year. It’s particularly poignant now we’ve reached 2014, as we mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War 1 and remember those who gave their lives fighting in the trenches, and for the lost generation who never returned. Whether they’re based on fact or purely fiction, the stories and novels of WW1 still resonate today. Here are some of the most unforgettable.

Line of Fire: Diary of an Unknown Soldier Barroux (Author), Sarah Ardizzone

(Translator) This remarkable and unusual book came from the chance discovery of a diary. French writer and illustrator Barroux found the journal of an unknown soldier in a rubbish heap on a Parisian street. Barroux’s simple and often stark pencil illustrations have brought the words of the soldier to life and given us a rare glimpse into the first two months of WW1.The diary begins just as France officially declares war, and the soldier’s often heartrending descriptions cover a broad spectrum of emotions: from the physical ache and rub of boots in the here and now, to the hope and longing for his family and for a safe passage through the conflict. What became of the soldier we will perhaps never know, but here we have a rare glimpse into a moment and a life, in time.

A Farewell to Arms Ernest Hemingway

Based on his own experiences of the First World War, volunteering for the ambulance service in Italy, A Farewell to Arms is a love story between Frederic Henry (a Lieutenant serving in the ambulance corps of the Italian Army) and a nurse called Catherine Barkley. Set against a brutal and bloody backdrop, the novel is full of moments of sheer romanticism and passion. Hemingway’s descriptions of war are truly unforgettable and the themes of love and death make for a very dramatic read.

All Quiet on the Western Front -

Erich Maria Remarque A group of young, idealistic and gung-ho teenagers are excited and fired-up by their teacher, eager to enlist to fight in the war. What follows is the horrific realisation of what conflict really is, and the terrors of life in the trenches are soon revealed. Paul Baumer 24 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

was one of those students for whom the war was at first an adventure. The young group of classmates fall apart after the first bombardment, leaving the survivors languishing in a hell of their own choosing. Paul vows to keep on living and to fight against a war that pits young men against others of the same generation.

War Horse Michael Morpurgo

From the pen of acclaimed children’s author, Michael Morpurgo, comes a story that has captivated kids and adults alike. Joey is a beautiful young foal who is sold to the army and quickly finds himself charging into battle as the war rages in France. Told through Joey’s eyes, this is a powerful story about friendship, humility and humanity. Joey battles to stay alive and never lets go of his dream of returning home to his original owner, Albert and the farm life he left behind. This powerful story has become both an emotive stage show in the West End and a Hollywood blockbuster.

Regeneration Pat Barker

Pat Barker’s novel was inspired by her grandfather’s own experiences during World War 1 and a lot of the characters are based on the accounts of individuals who were treated for ‘shell-shock’ and post-traumatic stress disorder (although it wasn’t recognised as such at the time) at Craiglockhart War Hospital in Edinburgh. The title refers to the research carried out by psychologist W.H.R. Rivers into nerve regeneration after mental and emotional trauma, and explores the medical practices and treatments of the time. The story centres on an English officer who is sent to a military hospital after refusing to continue to fight in the war.

The Guns of August Barbara W.

Tuchman The thirty days leading up to the start of World War One have been brought to life in Tuchman’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. It focuses on why the war broke out, who was involved and why it wasn’t prevented. Her attention to detail is incredible and as those last few weeks spill out in front of us, you can almost feel as though you are reliving it, one hundred years on. It makes for incredibly powerful and thought-provoking reading. Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 4th November

Remembering in york Remembrance Day takes place on November 11 to mark the moment the guns of the First World War fell silent, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. Remembrance Sunday, 9th November, is the day put aside to remember all those who have given their lives for our peace and freedom. Members of the British Legion care about the lives of the Armed Forces family, past, present and future. The Poppy Appeal is the Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign and runs year-round. Lapel poppies are available to buy in shops, supermarkets, pubs and clubs from the last week of October until Remembrance Sunday, or 11 November, whichever is later in the calendar. It takes 350,000 volunteers and staff to organise the Poppy Appeal each year and money raised goes to support their welfare work for the Armed Forces community. THE LIFE LIST

PARADOXES AND CONTRADICTIONS Everyone knows that flammable and inflammable mean the same thing these days, but there are other, more mundane things that don’t seem to make sense. When you think about it life is full of paradoxes and contradictions.

Strensall 01904 490339

Satnav - Specifically designed to get you swiftly from A to B, but you’ll still find time to argue with it even while you follow its commands. Holidays - A break from your home and work, so you can worry about your home and work, before missing one and resenting the other. By the time you finally get into the holiday spirit it’s time to come home again.

Children - They start off being too small to sit at the table. Then, when they’re teenagers, they become too tall to bend down and pick their clothes up from the floor.

Television - You’ll flick through 20 channels, just to confirm how much rubbish is on, even though you went meticulously through the listings beforehand. Meanwhile, you’re avoiding any of the 50 hours of ‘must see’ TV you’ve recorded in the last six months.

Dogs - You’re the owner but they’re the masters. Eventually they will have you trained in obedience, agility (chasing after them, saving ornaments and rescuing visitors), and food-sharing.

Age - The older you get, the less you feel you know - or trust. History keeps changing and yet, despite technological advances, the future looks remarkably like the past - only it’s called retro.

Cars - The more prestigious and impressive they are, the more helpless you are when they go wrong.

PEN LIFE - BEST REGIONAL FINANCIAL PLANNER 2014 Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner

These denote the very highest standards of ethical practice and client care. And they’re the standards that Consumer Association, “Which”, insist upon when referring their readers to professional financial planners.

I

’m dead chuffed that Pen-Life have won the prestigious “Best Regional Financial Planner” gong in the Wealth & Money Management Awards 2014. Consumers could be forgiven for tarring all financial people with the same brush as a result of the various financial miss-selling scandals over the years. As a consequence, we have to work doubly hard to win the trust of clients. And one way of doing that is through awards and independent accreditations. My firm was the first, and I think is still the only, financial planning practice in Yorkshire to receive both Chartered status and the British Kite Mark BS 8577.

So who should seek financial advice? Money Savings Expert Martin Lewis says “When it comes to making life-changing or complex financial decisions, even the money-savvy should consider paying an adviser to ensure they get it right.” A good example of where consumers are mixed up about finances concerns the good old Individual Savings Account (ISA). Most people think they understand ISAs. They are considered tax efficient. There’s no income tax to pay on interest. And any gains made are free of Capital Gains Tax. But did you know that the vast majority of ISAs will be subject to Inheritance Tax (IHT) when you die with assets worth more than £325,000. And IHT is a massive 40%. So it’s nonsense chasing an extra half

a percent interest if almost half of it is going to end up down the IHT pan. Another area of complete misunderstanding surrounds pensions. And that’s set to get worse. On the face of it, Government proposals to offer free independent “guidance” to everyone considering taking their retirement benefits sounds like a good idea. But when that guidance is delivered by unqualified and inexperienced civil servants, the whole fiasco seems doomed to failure. We want to make sure your money lasts as long as you do and that anything left over goes to your family and not the Tax Man. If you want that too, you might benefit from a free nononsense chat with one of our friendly advisers. Trust me – we’re on your side.

If you’d like to learn how to make your retirement savings last as long as you do, get my FREE Wealth Kit which looks at some of the financial issues facing people retiring now. Italian Lamb Shanks Makes 4. Ready in 21/2 hours

INGREDIENTS • 4 small lamb shanks • 2 tbsp olive oil • 350g shallots, peeled • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and chopped • 150g cubed pancetta (Italian dry cured bacon) • 300ml red wine • 400g can chopped tomatoes • 2 tbsp sun-dried tomato puree

Lamb shanks are perfect for long slow cooking as they become meltingly tender and the meat just falls off the bone. Here they are braised with all the flavours of Italy – red wine, smoked cured bacon and tomatoes. Serve with creamy mash or boiled ribbon pasta such as tagliatelle or pappardelle.

• 2 sprigs fresh rosemary, plus extra sprigs to garnish • 5ml (1tsp) sugar • Creamy mashed potato, to serve

Preheat the oven to 170°C/150°C fan/gas 3. 1. Season the lamb shanks with freshly ground

black pepper. Heat the oil in a frying pan and brown the lamb shanks over a high heat for 4-5 minutes, turning frequently. Transfer to a shallow casserole dish.

Add the shallots, garlic and pancetta to the 2. frying pan and cook over a medium heat for

6-7 minutes until lightly browned. Pour in the red wine and bring to the boil. Add the tomatoes, sun-dried tomato puree, rosemary sprigs and sugar and pour over the lamb.

shanks are very tender and the sauce has thickened slightly. Adjust the seasoning to taste and serve with creamy mashed potato and garnished with fresh rosemary.

Why not double up the quantities and freeze away half for another day? Allow to cool completely then transfer to a freezer-proof container. Freeze for up to 2 months. Defrost thoroughly then reheat gently on the hob for 20-25 minutes until piping hot.

HEALTH

Tea and Coffee: The Good & The Bad By Alison Runham. www.alison.runham.co.uk

We meet up for coffee; invite friends for a cuppa. But are these drinks friends or foes? CAFFEINE The good: Caffeine increases our alertness, and may temporarily sharpen our cognitive abilities. Substantial research suggests that coffee and tea drinkers are less likely to develop Parkinson’s disease, most likely due to caffeine, which may also help with symptoms. The bad: Caffeine can raise blood pressure and adrenaline levels. It can also relax pelvic muscles, making you urinate more frequently. High levels may be linked to low birth weight or miscarriage. The truth: Maximum protection against Parkinson’s disease seems to come from just three cups of tea or coffee daily. While lab results seem promising, there’s no definitive evidence linking tea and coffee drinking with reduced Alzheimer’s risk. Our bodies can become accustomed to caffeine. Without it we can become tired, irritable, headachy and even shaky and nauseous. So how much is too much? Recommended limits average at 400-600mg per day and just 200mg if you’re pregnant. • cup of green tea: 40mg • cup of normal tea: 70mg • mug of instant coffee: 100mg • filter coffee: 150mg • average latte: 150mg • large Americano: 200mg Don’t forget other caffeine sources too: energy drinks, chocolate and some painkillers and fizzy drinks. 42 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

ANTIOXIDANTS The good: Antioxidants mop up free radicals which can damage our cells. We all know green tea contains antioxidants, but so do black tea and coffee - just at lower levels. The bad: It’s unclear how much we benefit from these antioxidants once our body has processed our cuppa. But active compounds in green tea are being used in research with nanotherapeutics – the development of microscopic compounds that escape processing to find and target diseases, including cancer. The truth: Many foods contain antioxidants, often at higher levels than tea and coffee, so there are better sources. DIABETES PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT The good: Some evidence suggests that moderate amounts of coffee or tea, drunk black or with a little milk, may slightly reduce your risk of Diabetes Type 2. The bad: There’s also research showing that high coffee intake may impair insulin resistance, making it harder to stabilise blood sugar levels. The truth: You’re likely to see both theories in the media, but more research that eliminates other influential factors is needed.

REDUCING STROKE, CORONARY HEART DISEASE RISK AND CHOLESTEROL LEVELS The good: Some studies suggest that drinking tea and coffee reduces stroke, coronary heart disease risk and cholesterol levels. The bad: Contradictory evidence. One study found high tea consumption, and low and high coffee consumption reduced stroke risk most,– moderate consumption made no difference. Reported reductions in cholesterol levels were small. The truth: Once again, more research is needed to exclude other factors and study longterm effects. LIVER HEALTH The good: Research suggests moderate consumers of coffee and green tea are less likely to suffer from NALD (non-alcoholic liver disease). The bad: High intake of green tea supplements has been linked to liver damage, although it’s not clear whether green tea extract or another ingredient is guilty. The truth: Tea or coffee can’t prevent or reverse liver damage if you drink or smoke heavily. So moderation seems best. Three or four cups of tea or coffee daily appear to give maximum health benefits and minimum risk, and without milk or sugar they’ll be calorie free but practically nutrition-free too, so drink fruit juices and dairybased drinks as well.

Dentures what are they? by Christine Parker

Dentures are a relatively BDS (GDC 72136) simple and cost effective solution for the replacement of 1 or more missing teeth. Whilst there are other methods of replacing teeth such as bridgework (2 or more crowns joined together from a natural supporting tooth.) or implants where a titanium screw is placed in the jaw to support a crown, these can be significantly more expensive and in some cases the remaining natural teeth may be too compromised to take the extra weight. The treatment to provide them can also be much more invasive and can take many months to complete. Dentures on the other hand can be placed the day a tooth is extracted an ‘immediate’ denture so to speak, these may then be worn until full healing can be established. Well constructed dentures can help to restore your smile, they can also give you the choice of altering the shade, shape and position of your teeth and even enhancing the fullness of your lips and reducing lines and wrinkles on the face. Like all treatments and natural teeth they eventually wear or loosen and need replacement. By correctly caring for them by thoroughly cleansing them in the evening and after meals your denture should serve you well for several years. Dentures often referred to as a ‘plate’ can be made of plastic, both flexible and solid, and also metal commonly cobalt chrome alloy or even gold! They can cover all of the plate or just a small part and may be held in place by friction or by clasps. If you have a denture that you feel is past its best then please contact Georgina at Howardian Dental Practice to discuss an assessment.

EMILY...

ON REMEMBRANCE DAY Often Remembrance Sunday is a day that comes and passes each year without really getting noticed, lacking the fanfare that surrounds days such as Christmas or Easter. Perhaps you’ll attend a service. Perhaps you’ll spare two minutes in silence when the clocks strike eleven. Perhaps you’ll simply wear a poppy. Ultimately I believe the act of remembrance can be as big or small as you make it. As long as you remember. Being a Brownie from the age of seven followed by being a Girl Guide up until the age of fifteen, I have fond memories of Remembrance Sunday. Frosty mornings wrapped up in thermals at the memorial in Malton, marching through town as a flag bearer. Whilst being too young to truly understand the meaning of Remembrance, my memories emulate everything that Remembrance Sunday infers. Unity, drawn from all generations as they gather to remember the noble sacrifices made by the past for their future.

Our small team of experienced, friendly staff are focused on you. You’ll see the same faces each time you visit, allowing us to really get to know you and offer truly personal service. We offer easy access with free parking right outside. The number 1 and 13 bus routes are directly opposite too, just hop off at the Ryedale Court Shopping Centre. Haxby Opticians 6 Ryedale Court Haxby YO32 3SA

(01904) 761216 Info@HaxbyOpticians.co.uk www.HaxbyOpticians.co.uk

Perhaps one of the most poignant experiences that comes to mind when I think about Remembrance was the service that I witnessed at Menin Gate in Belgium when I visited on my school’s battlefield tour. The bustling tourist square is struck silent as last post echoes loudly through the streets and people from all around the world lay wreaths to commemorate the fallen of World War One. It is incredibly moving, how almost one hundred years later the streets are still lined with people who don’t want to forget. This service happens every single day at the Menin Gate, 365 days a year. Suddenly, Remembrance seemed so much more to me than a single day. It is in everything we do and in the lives we lead as a consequence of the bravery of so many who fought for our freedom. For this reason alone, we will always remember. Emily

LITTLE SILVER HEDGEHOG

here is a helping hand - albeit a gloved one! - for injured and sick hedgehogs in York, thanks to Little Silver Hedgehog.

Run by Emma Farley, our spiky little friends are helped back into the wild thanks to her creative talents. Emma creates beautiful, bespoke silver jewellery to help fund the food, medication and equipment needed by these prickly but lovable creatures. Emma’s products are available online, and all profits go to caring for the rescued hedgehogs. Emma said: “My customers love the fact that buying a piece helps hedgehogs back to the wild. I make the jewellery in silver clay which turns to solid sterling silver when fired. I make each piece individually, then fire it, sand it and polish it. The end result is a beautiful and unique piece – no two are exactly the same so it is really special.”

There are other ways we can all do to help hedgehogs survive in their natural habitat. Emma’s advice is: • Make a hole underneath fences to help hedgehogs roam about as they need several kilometres of gardens to find enough food • Leave out a shallow bowl of water and cat/dog food/cat biscuits/mealworms/sunflower hearts - NEVER give milk • Cover ponds or provide an escape route for hedgehogs • Always check for hedgehogs before you strim grass or light a bonfire • Provide a hedgehog house/log pile/piles of leaves/ wild areas as hibernation sites • Always contact a rescue centre if you see a hedgehog out in the day – they don’t sunbathe • Keep plant netting off the ground – hedgehogs can get tangled in it • Don’t use pesticides or slug pellets For more information, visit www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk So we can all do our bit, and as Christmas isn’t too far away, it’s a great time to consider one of Emma’s designs for that perfect present. WINTER AT THE

INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR

BIRDS OF PREY

DUNCOMBE PARK HELMSLEY

We will fly some of our tiny owls in Christmas Tree Cottage, lit by candles and the lights from a couple of Christmas trees; this is going to be magical. A warming supper follows and then on to the main event. We head out to the flying ground to fly the big owls by torchlight. The sight of a Great Grey Owl appearing from the gloom to silently land on a gently lit perch is one you are unlikely to forget.

T

he year has gone so quickly! We have had a really good 2014; visitor numbers are very good and the birds are all well.

In fact this year saw us breeding Grey Buzzard Eagles, Harris Hawks and, most exciting of all, we bred a Griffon Vulture. Vultures all over the world are having a very tough time at the moment. The International Centre for Birds of Prey has always played a leading role in worldwide vulture conservation, and this is just the cherry on top! Autumn is always an exciting time, as that is when we have young birds joining the flying team. New for this year are a Peregrine Falcon, two Ural Owls, a Snowy Owl, an Abyssinian Eagle Owl, a Kestrel and a home-bred Harris Hawk and Grey Buzzard Eagle. We are also delighted to have Typhoon, a young New Zealand Falcon joining the team. He might be the only New Zealand Falcon on public display in the country. We are also getting a couple of giant Steller’s Sea Eagles trained and ready for flying duties. As the leaves fall off the trees and the nights draw in we are busy preparing for our Winter Owl Evenings. Starting at 7pm pre-booked visitors will be welcomed with a glass of mulled wine before heading off for a tour of the owl aviaries by torchlight. The owls are always some of our most popular residents, but you only really get to appreciate them when you go into their world; the darkness.

We are hoping to get another aviary block built over the winter. This will be for some of our flying birds and will be close to our flying ground. It will enable us to add an extra dimension to the flying demonstrations. We do flying demonstrations every day, and are open 7 days a week until Christmas Eve. We reopen on 1 February 2015, by which time hopefully some of our breeding birds will have laid eggs. We have free parking and when you visit us you also get access into the 300 acres of surrounding parkland, which is a wonderful place to go for a walk and admire the autumn colours. Bring the advert opposite for a discount on entry. Oh – and don’t forget to get your Christmas Tree from Duncombe Park whilst you are here!

8 Easy Ways to Cut Your Heating Oil Costs This Winter With fuel poverty on the rise and cold weather just around the corner, energy efficiency is more important than ever. If you’re on heating oil and would like to make your supply go further this winter, check out our useful tips for easy ways to stay warm for longer! 1. INSULATE

60% of the heat that escapes from your home is lost through the walls and roof. By insulating your property, using draft excluders and even closing your curtains in the evening, you can retain heat and reduce your fuel use.

2. SHOP AROUND

You might have a regular energy supplier, but are they offering you the best price? By shopping around or using an instant, impartial comparison service such as BoilerJuice, you’ll always get the best quote for your oil.

7. BLEED YOUR RADIATORS

By removing excess air from your central heating system, you can make sure that your boiler isn’t working harder than necessary (and burning more fuel than necessary) to heat your home.

8. PROTECT YOUR TANK

As winter creeps in, heating oil thefts increase. By using CCTV, installing a security light or adding a padlock to the opening of your tank, you can take steps to deter thieves and keep your oil supply safe.

3. GRAB A GADGET

Pop an insulation panel behind your radiators to reflect heat back into the room, or invest in a radiator booster, which will circulate any warm air that would have been lost behind the radiator, around your home.

4. ADD AN ADDITIVE

As well as upgrading your fuel, oil additives can help to improve the efficiency of your boiler, which in turn reduces the amount of oil required to heat your home.

5. BOOK A SERVICE

The best way to make sure that your boiler is working efficiently (and not using more oil than necessary to heat your home) is to have it serviced annually. Book a service with an OFTEC registered technician through BoilerJuice, to make sure that your boiler is in full working condition, before the cold weather hits.

6. DIAL IT DOWN

It’s important to stay warm during winter, but by throwing on an extra jumper and turning your thermostat down by just one degree, you can cut your fuel use by up to 10%!

SHORT STORY THE GUNPOWDER PLOT by Jackie Brewster

“Is there any chance you could give me a hand?” Carrie looked up from the library photocopier at the young man. It was the same one she’d been discretely watching across the bookshelves as he struggled to finish his essay. “I need to enlarge this picture and I’m not sure how”, he said. Carrie reasoned that she had only been watching him because she thought he might be the poor bloke that Marissa had got her claws into. She could see why; even though he was wearing his jumper inside out, he was rather cute. As well as being a student, Carrie worked evenings at the college library, and had come to notice most things. For example, she’d seen him cast anxious glances at the library clock, and suspected that tonight was the night that Marissa had finally agreed to go on a date with him. There was a big Bonfire Party in town, and she’d overheard Marissa boasting that this guy was so besotted with her he would be buying her entry ticket and her drinks all night. Poor man, what was he letting himself in for? Carrie stared at the book he was holding out to her. “I’m sorry?” she said. “I need to enlarge this”, he said apologetically, “I’m in a bit of a hurry”. If he was hoping to catch the six o’clock bus into town, Carrie thought, he was cutting it rather fine. Slowly, she took the book. “Sure, what do you want enlarging?” “It’s the Palace of Westminster”. He pointed to the page, “I need it blowing up”. 52 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

She looked at the picture and laughed. “That’s the Houses of Parliament isn’t it?” “Yes”, he adjusted his glasses, “it’s for an essay”. “You’re asking me to help you blow up the Houses of Parliament?” She giggled, “tonight of all nights?” He stared at her blankly. “It’s bonfire night”, she explained. “Course!”, he grinned, “I’m going to a bonfire party”. “Got a hot date lined up?” Carrie said, and laughed at her own joke. “Something like that”. He blushed. “We don’t want you to be late”. Carrie smiled, “I bet she’ll have you hung drawn and quartered”. Knowing Marissa, thought Carrie, that’s the least she would do. He laughed nervously. Carrie placed the book carefully on the photocopier, “Does this make me a coconspirator?” she asked, and pressed a few buttons. “About what?” he said. “About your gunpowder plot?” “Oh yeah”. He glanced at the clock again and winced. Carrie bit her lip and pressed the start button. Nothing happened. “That’s odd”. She gave the machine a kick. It stayed silent. Carrie methodically went through the whole process again, twice; patiently checking everything, but still nothing. “I’m sorry, the machine’s playing up”, she sighed, “our technician will be back in an hour, can you come back then?”

The library clock chimed six. The young man slumped against the wall. The bus was leaving without him. “Cheer up”, Carrie said guiltily, “I’m sure she won’t mind waiting”. It was common knowledge that Marissa waited for nobody. She took a deep breath, “I’m finishing work now. Can I buy you a drink in the student bar to help pass the time?” “Why not?” He managed a smile, “You’ve been really helpful”. “I’m Carrie”. She comically held out her hand, “What’s your name?” “It’s Guy”, he smiled and shook it warmly. “Guy Fawkes”. “You’re joking?” “Got you”. he grinned, “It’s Tom”. “I’ll get my stuff and meet you there in five”. Carrie waved him off, and, as walked away, bent down and switched the photocopier back on.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas

and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A well lit home gives the impression that somebody is in, even if you are not and will deter a thief. Timer Switches are a cheap and easy way to give the impression that you are home. A 20 watt energy efficient bulb costs less than 2p per day if left on for four hours, significantly cheaper than replacing a laptop or similar.

LIGHT UP LOCK UP

A

s we head into November the evenings are getting much darker. During the darker evenings it is easier for thieves to loiter in areas without being seen by members of the public. A huge number of offences are opportunistic and criminals will always be looking for an easy way to commit offences with the lowest risk of being caught that they can get away with. Taking simple steps to keep your property secure can make the difference between you becoming a victim of crime and not. If you have a garage then whenever possible park your car in it. This keeps the vehicle out of sight and is obviously more secure than parking on your driveway or the street. If you do not have a garage try to park in a well lit area and remove any valuables from the vehicle before leaving it and always remember to lock all the doors and close the windows. A large number of offences could be prevented simply by locking the doors and removing a sat nav or other item of value from the vehicle. If there is nothing valuable on show in the vehicle then in all likelihood a thief will leave your vehicle as they will continue to look for an easy target which they will likely find somewhere nearby. Obviously the same advice applies to your home. Keep the doors locked and do not leave items of value near to windows in view. It takes only a second for an offender to smash a window , lean in and grab a lap top or smart phone.

Do not assume that offences will only happen during the night. As soon as it starts to get darker the risks increase. However you can reduce the chances of becoming a victim of crime significantly by following simple steps. Keep it secure, keep it well lit and never make it easy for the thieves. For any specific advice contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Police Team via 101. By Jimmy Hannon, PCSO 5637

A BETTER LIFE TIME TO REFLECT by Derek Thompson

Derek Thompson is a writer and humourist based in the West Country. His writing blog can be found at www. alongthewritelines.blogspot.com and he is also a regular at www.strictlywriting.blogspot.com

N

ow that the harvest is officially over (bar some sprouts and a couple of leeks), November is our time for pause and renewal. Just as Oct 31st signified the Celtic New Year, we celebrate our growing successes and consider our failures, much like a Better Life school report. A bit like the spuds I planted recently, it’s a mixed bag. Biology - The so-called weed that flourished in the raised bed turned out to be an oriental poppy, bearing 16 flower heads. Full marks for bird poop or windfall, and my procrastination. Geography - My guerrilla gardening efforts at work were a little underwhelming. The four mange tout I secreted in the communal garden struggled (insufficient light) until, finally, the sole survivor yielded two actual mange tout. Must do better! Home Economics - Full marks to Anne and the garden. The butternut squash survived the mollusc hordes (as I’ve said before, there’s never a hedgehog around when you need one, although we did once find a poop on the front doorstep) and, along with homemade fennel bread, rhubarb crumble and lettuce were the standout successes. PE - I clocked up 250 cycling miles in 12 months, commuting to my part-time job - aside from the mile-long round trip for the Post Office run (amble!). Also, digging for victory helped to cancel out the calories.

nettle feed for growing and comfrey feed (donated by a neighbour) for flowers or fruits. Both Anne and the cat were put off by the stench though, so we’ll need a quarantined area next time. Woodwork - Full marks again, to our neighbour. If you can find yourself a retired carpenter with tools and free time, it’s well worth bartering to sort out their computer problems! Physics - A raised bed with insufficient soil is little more than a wooden frame. I think I discovered some as yet unidentified law of volume that states it always takes more bags of soil and compost than you have to hand. Drama - Somehow, we cornered the market this year in micro garlic. Indoors, the chilli peppers, alas, burned brightly but briefly - except on the tongue. In a surprise twist the rogue tomato seed in the compost proved to be sun gold, yielding dozens of belladonna beauties. Maybe I’ll grow to like the taste one day. Reading - I’ve started to read seed packets more carefully, so that we plant according to the climate and soil from now on!

History - I was better at recording planting dates on the calendar for forward planning, helping to ensure the garden remained productive and sustainable. A WWII crop rotation leaflet proved useful too, once laminated for outdoor service.

Our main growing lessons: - Assume there will be losses even early on and plant accordingly. - Be decisive when it comes to taking ailing plants out. Otherwise they’re taking up nutrients as well as space. - Experiment. Much as the experts would love to tell you otherwise, there are no hard and fast rules - only what works on your patch of soil. Be bold!

Chemistry - Our do-it-yourself plant feeds seem to work, but the trial became skewed when I felt sorry for the underprivileged specimens. We made

Overall, I’d give us a B minus for effort and a C plus for achievement. And now we move up a year!

TRAVEL

By Solange Hando

The Iguazu Falls (South America) Throat, while others might prefer a helicopter ride for a brief but unforgettable bird’s eye view of the falls in their pristine emerald setting. Surrounded by rainforest, with visitors’ facilities well out of sight, Iguazu is protected by UNESCO with national parks on both sides of the border. On quiet days, you may well spot some of the wild life close to the water, from racoons and monkeys to parrots, macaws and toucans splashing myriad colours in the trees. Caimans bask in the lower reaches and there are jaguars and coral snakes deep in the forest.

T

he natives called them ‘big water’ and with an average flow of 10 million litres per second, Iguazu takes your breath away, thundering water, gusty winds, relentless spray and great clouds of mist rising above sub-tropical forest. Visitors are likely to get wet but no one seems to mind for in this wild awesome place, Iguazu is no ordinary cataract. Just imagine a dark basalt cliff face, 2.7 km long, shaped like an inverted letter J, streaked by up to 300 glistening waterfalls, each one with its own name, plunging 60 to 90 metres, from the upper to the lower Iguazu river. ‘Santa Maria’, exclaimed Spanish explorer Cabeza de Vaca in 1541 when he discovered one of the most powerful cataracts. Santa Maria, as it is still called, is on the Brazil side but Argentina claims 80% of the falls, including the highest,

64 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

the Devil’s Throat, reached by an eco-train and a kilometre long walkway across the upper river. ‘Argentina has the falls, Brazil has the views’, they say, and this is certainly true. In Argentina, visitors arrive at the top of the Devil’s Throat, with just a partial view of the other falls, while on the Brazilian side, they take in the whole panorama, first from above and then, even more impressive, from below. You cannot beat the excitement as you make your way down the steps to the central point of the falls and along the amazing ‘cat walk’ which takes you to the heart of it all, soaked to the skin but exhilarated. Dwarfed by the mighty curtains of water roaring all around, you stand and stare as rainbows come and go like magic. No one wants to leave but there are other treats in store. Those who are brave enough can shoot the rapids on inflatable speed boats, right up to the base of the Devil’s

The nearby bird park offers a great alternative for wild life enthusiasts, dedicated to conservation in its own patch of rainforest. As one would expect, the Iguazu falls vary according to season, often at their best around AprilMay when there is still plenty of water and skies tend to be clear. Today, however, climate change offers no guarantee. In 2006, a six-month drought left scores of visitors gazing in disbelief at barren cliffs and rocks. Yet, for those who have seen all the greatest falls in the world, Iguazu is top of the list for its panoramic views and unspoilt natural setting. Even Eleanor Roosevelt, first lady of the United States, was said to agree when she set eyes on this gigantic canyon, born from tectonic movements which began some 150 million years ago.

GARDENING

PLANTING TREES AND SHRUBS

by Pippa Greenwood

T

rees, shrubs and woody climbers in particular are often a very good buy at this time of year so take a look at your garden and see what you could add, or perhaps consider removing that plant which has never quite done what you hoped….and replace it with something new.

This is a great time of year to get planting – the soil is still holding a bit of warmth from the late summer and is now more moist and provides good conditions for roots to develop, spread and establish.

linear fencing

A high quality, yet low cost fencing or patio solution

Planting trees and shrubs is certainly not difficult, but it is one of those gardening tasks about which ideas seem to change regularly and it can be confusing if you read widely differing opinions and ideas. So what should you be doing if you have just decided to add a few trees to your garden? A good planting hole or pit is essential, and you should sure that it is several inches (or better still more) larger than the current spread of the roots of the tree or shrub that you are about to plant. For years the advice has been that plenty of bulky >>

YORK • NOVEMBER 2014 • ISSUE 106 organic matter should be incorporated in to the hole and the mixture with which you back fill it. Investigations now suggest that this may not necessarily be the best way of going about things: make the planting hole too ‘cosy’ and the tree’s roots may be inclined to stay in the hole and not venture out in to the surrounding soil. In a heavy clay soil a planting hole full of compost may also end up acting as a sump, so when the soil is wet the compost draws more moisture in to the hole, resulting in waterlogged roots and maybe even death. All very logical, but then I would also suggest that if you garden on a very sandy, poor soil, a wellprepared planting pit (the bigger the better) which includes bulky organic matter such as garden compost will help to reduce the risk of drying out, and increase the chances of the tree growing away well. Similarly, provided the organic matter is incorporated over a good enough sized area on a heavy soil, I think it does help to improve aeration and drainage around tree roots, especially if you incorporate some grit too. Well rotted manure (ideally from a known source), garden compost and proprietary bagged compost are all useful in planting holes and if it is largely an

improvement in soil texture which you are after, then home-made leafmould is great too, and you can even use the compost from this summer’s patio tubs and planters (provided you are sure that it is free from vine weevil grubs). Next, to tease or not to tease the roots? I’m a teaser every time, having seen thousands of trees fail because their pot-bound roots never moved out in to the soil properly, if at all. Planting depth is important too, so do make sure

cause of all that plant suffering, so do take the time to get it right. Then of course there is staking. I suggest only doing this with large trees, apples on very dwarfing rootstocks or if the site is extremely windy as a tree will get tougher and more resilient if given a chance to move around slightly and so form a strong trunk. If you do stake, short stakes at an angle are now regarded as best, and do use a good quality tree tie, properly fitted so that the tree’s bark is not chaffed.

that you cover the roots, and only the roots, with soil. Even the compost level in the pot is often too deep, so start from scratch if necessary. Laying a straight cane over the top of the planting hole will help you to gauge the correct depth more easily.

Finally, remember that aftercare is essential, regular thorough waterings will be needed during dry weather, especially for the first couple of years after planting. If you don’t get the aftercare right, both the plant and all that time and effort (and enthusiasm) can easily be lost.

When I worked for the Royal Horticultural Society at Wisley my job as Plant Pathologist entailed looking at thousands of dead and dying plants each year – it was scary to see just how many trees and shrubs failed to thrive or just died because they had not been correctly planted . There is no doubt that excessively deep planting and entangled and pot-bound roots were the main

MOTORING By James Baggott

T

HE recent announcement about driverless cars heading to the UK got me thinking. Not about how nice it would be to have a snooze in the back of a long-termer as it cruised up the A34, dodging overtaking lorries as we go (although I admit that was my first thought), but more about the incredible advances in technology the car industry has made over the years… and, more importantly, the not so incredible. Few would doubt there have been some amazing leaps forward. Hybrid power plants, cars that you charge by plugging

YORK • NOVEMBER 2014 • ISSUE 106 into your house, night vision, automatic braking to avoid low-speed crashes, airbags, Bluetooth, the list of helpful gadgets goes on and on. However, having spent a few weeks in my trusty 1987 Fiesta XR2, I’m starting to wish that list could be made a little shorter by un-inventing a few things. My rusty Ford is pretty basic – the radio offers a choice of Five Live, or no Five Live, the heater settings consist of hot, warm or a little less warm and the lowering of the windows exercises your entire arm, not just one finger. Jumping from that into a modern test car makes you realise there are a lot of new gimmicks that should be consigned to Room 101. First, the electronic handbrake. Name one good reason why the electronically engaged anchor, which seems to take minutes to engage, should

replace the good old-fashioned tug of a manual parking brake. It’s impossible to know whether you need to push the button to engage it, or pull it, whether you need your foot on the brake or not, and that’s after you’ve found where the manufacturer has hidden the blooming switch in the first place. Electronic assistance is often the root cause of the problem. Manufacturers seem intent on adding a charge to a function that really didn’t need it in the first place. Tailgates for example. Why do I need help shutting the boot – 10 seconds more slowly than I could do it by hand – when I’ve managed perfectly adequately for years? Then there are the cars that don’t open all the doors when you press the keyfob. Remote central locking was a godsend when it arrived, all doors popping open at the touch

of a button. Why then, did a manufacturer decide that this wasn’t actually a good idea and that one press should open the driver’s door only? That is not progress. Don’t worry, there are more. One-touch windows, for one that go all the way down when you hit the button. They’re brilliant. But why does it sometimes only work on the driver’s side? How much more would it cost to offer that on all windows? Pennies? And don’t get me started on fuel gauges. The number of times I’ve brimmed a modern car only to travel 50 miles and for it to still show full beggars belief. That is a gauge that is quite clearly failing at its primary objective. As soon as I leave a petrol station with the engine running I am, by the laws of science, using fuel – that usage, no matter how small, should register on the gauge. >>

“There’s a lot to be said for simplicity. That’s why I’m just a little bit worried about self-driving cars.” >>

It’s either full or it’s not, right? And that’s not to mention the manufacturers that have done away with a gauge altogether and decided a few digital blobs are a fair representation of the fuel contained in the car’s bladder. Voice control that never works, or takes five times as long to execute a simple task that your finger could have done moments ago needs removing. I’d understand if the buttons that do the thing you’re trying to command with your voice were located in the boot, but they’re not, they’re less than an arm bend away. So, here’s an idea: Use your arm.

Automatic lights that illuminate at inappropriate times? They can go. Rain-sensitive wipers that come on too late or not strong enough – get rid of them. My point is (and yes, there is one) we’ve made some incredible progress over the years but in an attempt to get one over the competition, car firm tech departments have been let loose to engineer things that don’t need engineering. There’s a lot to be said for simplicity. That’s why I’m just a little bit worried about selfdriving cars. You only have to picture a supermarket car park of the future – yummy mummies engaging self-park and edging ever so slowly into

T

he penultimate Malton Monthly Food Market for 2014 will take place on Saturday 8th November – and it promises to be a fabulous foodie event! With over 35 food and drink stalls, free entry, free parking, live music from Malton White Star Band, live chef demos and the Malton CIC cafe, it’s one not to miss. The market trades from 9am to 3pm, and includes the best Yorkshire producers, selling anything from olive oil to artisan bread. Tom Naylor-Leyland, the market’s director, said: “Once again, we will be holding the Malton Monthly Food Market in the town’s Market Place along with the Cookery Theatre in the Milton Rooms.

a bay by the power of divine car brain intervention – to see the problems that may lie ahead. Yes, those cars may be finally parallel in the space, but judging by the time it takes to apply an electronic handbrake, how long do you think it’ll take to execute a reverse park? Whatever happens with driverless tech, I can see one good thing for dealers – and that’s the fillip it’ll offer servicing departments. I don’t think the government, or insurers for that matter, will take too kindly to owners who miss annual services when the car is driving itself around. That’ll be great news for dealers who currently rarely see owners once the warranty period has expired. Maybe that’s why all this new tech is invented in the first place… to keep technicians busy. Once a cynic, always a cynic, eh?

“Malton, regarded as Yorkshire’s Food Capital, has a rich and varied association with food, from its agricultural hinterland to its connections with local breweries. “The Monthly Food Market encourages local and regional producers to promote the best produce possible!” The monthly event also features live chef demos, with November’s line-up yet to be announced. Malton White Star Band provides the live music, adding to the friendly and bustling atmosphere of this popular event.

The final Malton Monthly Food Market for 2014 will be the festive market on Saturday 13th December. The 2015 markets will resume on Saturday 14th March and the annual Malton Food Lovers Festival takes place on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 May 2014. Brakes, lights, floorboards, doors – they all get worked hard. “Our professional team can help with an trailer from a small car trailer up to and including horseboxes, building and plant trailers. Most trailers require a

A full service history will help you avoid this situation.” As NTTA accredited dealers, once a vehicle is serviced by Harland Fletcher, the customer receives an NTTA service certificate to make up a service history. “A full service history for towing vehicles helps it to retain value and also give customers peace of mind that their vehicle is safe to use,” said Stuart.

REMEMBER REMEMBER

YOUR PETS THIS NOVEMBER!

Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic

H

ere at Battleflatts Veterinary clinic we have been advising our clients on how they can help their pets cope during the firework season. A fear of fireworks is a very common problem affecting 80% of pets. They have very acute hearing so can find the loud bangs and crackles very distressing. Signs of stress include trembling, clinginess, cowering, hiding, shaking and vocalisation. It is always advisable to seek help from professional people (vet/animal behaviourist) as soon as any of these signs are seen, as left untreated, mild firework fear can become serious noise phobia.

Our top tips for the firework season: • Walk your dog earlier in the day before fireworks start • Keep your pets inside - remember fireworks can start unexpectedly • Ensure your pet has some form of Identification (microchip and or Tag) just in case they escape • Ignore any fearful behaviour exhibited from your pets. Keep calm and carry on as normal.

Your pet will pick up on your anxious vibes! • Close windows and doors, block off cat flaps and close the curtains. Turn up the TV or radio to help block out the sound of fireworks • Try not to leave your pets alone when fireworks are going off • Provide a den or hiding place for your pet, don’t make a fuss of your pet especially if they appear stressed • And most importantly DO NOT punish your pet! This will make the problem worse Not forgetting our small animals: • Where possible bring hutches and enclosures indoors to somewhere quiet or turn the hutch to face the wall. • Provide additional bedding for pets to burrow in • Cover any hutches/aviaries with a thick blanket to block out flashes and sounds. Ensure plenty of ventilation. After the firework season is over is the best time to tackle curing the phobia. Behaviour therapy works extremely well but is very time consuming and requires a committed owner. If you have any questions or concerns then any of the vets or nurses will be happy to help you. You can ring us at Stamford Bridge on 01759 371066 or Strensall on 01904 490055 or Pocklington on 01759 307500 or Norton on 01653697299

A STRAY IN A MANGER! Here at Battle Flatts we are once again running our annual Christmas collection for our local animal charities during December. Christmas is one of the busiest times of year for these charities, but unfortunately is also a time when animals tend to be forgotten. We are collecting donations of tinned & dried pet foods, treats & toys. All donations will be gratefully received and can be left under the Christmas Tree in any of our branches. 78 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

NOVEMBER FIFTH Celia Carr RVN Station House Vets It was a cold winter’s night, There was frost on the ground, The sky was pitch black, Not a thing made a sound. The fire crackled peacefully, Burt stretched on the rug, E thel yawned happily, Both creatures were snug,

Today was November fifth, Sadly, the peace would not last, Suddenly the black sky lit up, Followed by deafening blasts. Burt leapt up, started barking, Petrified, he scratched at the door Ethel, in fear, shot out of the house Scared, now alone, Burt barked more The indigo sky lit up Bangs and whistles rang out Lights exploded into the night

FELINE STRESS Cats Protection’s York Adoption Centre is urging owners to be aware of feline stress in the light of research showing many owners are letting their love for their moggies cloud their judgement when it comes to providing a stress-free home. A survey of 1,300 cat owners found that, when it comes to dealing with their stressed out pet, more than half (53%) would give them a cuddle. “Being held or stroked for too long can be very stressful for some cats,” says James Hodgkison of Cats Protection’s York Centre. “Space and peace is often what they need - they’re not small furry humans so what would comfort us won’t necessarily comfort them.” The survey also found that many cat owners find it difficult to recognise signs of stress and are at a loss as to what to do about it. In particular: • More than half of owners (55%) didn’t realise that living with another cat or dog can be stressful for their pet. 80 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

• Half the owners (50%) were unaware that other cats coming into the house could be a cause of stress. • More than a third (35%) let neighbouring cats in, either through a door or window, or their own cat’s cat flap. • More than half of respondents (51%) failed to identify wetting and soiling in the house as a sign of stress. • Only a quarter (26%) knew that grooming a particular area all the time was also an indication of stress. James says: “On average about 20% of cats in our care are with us because of reasons linked to stress, such as the introduction of a new pet, baby or partner or something as simple as a house move. Stress is also associated with some common feline diseases and can occur in areas where there are a lot of cats. “Owners should watch their cats closely for warning signs including becoming withdrawn or less tolerant, eating or drinking less, soiling in the house, overgrooming and restlessness. These symptoms could be due to other medical conditions or behavioural Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 4th November

YORK • NOVEMBER 2014 • ISSUE 106 “Owowow yowled Burt,”what a sight.” Ethel’s eyes wide and black Scared, her fur stood on end, Never before had she seen stars fly With such noisy bangs, up in the sky In terror, she tore down the garden To hide under the rickety fence. Ripping her leg in mid flight, She stayed hidden all night Later, the owners returned, They realised that Ethel was gone, Burt ,barking and quivering with fear, Would not let his owners near Next morning Ethel returned. The family got into the car. On arrival, there were other poor pets, After the chaos last night, needing vets! The vet discussed plug-in diffusers, Tablets to keep the pets calm, Safe hiding places for every one, “There are things” she said “ can be done” “These injuries shouldn’t have happened, Your pets can relax on the fifth. With a bit of good preparation, You could’ve avoided this vet’s operation!” problems so we also recommend consulting a vet if you notice these changes in your cat.”

Cats Protection’s top five tips to relieve feline stress are: • Try not to overly stroke or cuddle a cat which is showing signs of stress as it can make it worse. • Provide pet cats with easily accessible places to hide and let them stay in there for as long as they want to. A hiding place makes them feel safe and secure and can be something as simple as a cardboard box on its side or upside-down. • Cats feel safer if they can view their surroundings from up high, so make sure they can access somewhere like the top of the wardrobe or a high shelf. • Ensure there is enough food, water and litter trays for the all of the cats in your household. The ideal number of litter trays is one per cat plus one extra. • Install a microchip or magnetic cat flap, which lets your cats into your property and keeps neighbouring cats out.
