elcome to our November edition.

I’d love to say that the monthly production of the Handy Mags is a serene event, but no. With one week to go before our print deadline, Nicky and I usually descend into (organised) chaos trying to fit everything in and make sure everything is correct. Phil, our designer, usually works from home but in deadline week he can be found in our back office trying to squeeze every last drop of space for all of those adverts and local event listings. Our new office neighbours say they can hear us laughing (and berating I’m sure)! But every month (touch wood) the magazines come together; and every month we say that for the next issue we will be the epitome of cool! Sometimes I dream of pottering at home, rearranging the furniture, feet-up, house clean and tidy, worrying about what’s for tea. But I absolutely love the busy-ness. We talk to so many different people from tradesmen to local groups, like the many walking groups and fair commitees, to larger businesses, councils, retailers and, of course, readers. Working at the Handy Mag, Nicky and I get to meet all sorts, and it is kind of special that we do.

Did you know? The Handy Mag... - is delivered to 24,500 letterboxes on the north side of York including Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall, Dunnington and the Poppletons. - is only 60% advertising which means lots of space for supporting our local community. - is delivered by Royal Mail for guaranteed coverage - promotes local community events for free. - is run by a local team of 3. - has been running for almost 12 years. - is delivered FREE through your door!

This month, as usual, we’ve included a list of the Remembrance events in your area. There are also lots of notices for festive fairs and shows so make sure you have a read through and do support your local events. If you have a business in the area, why not give the Handy Mags a try for your local advertising. I know I’m biased but we work really hard to blend local information and articles with advertising, to produce a magazine that most people like, keep, read and, most importantly use! Until next month…

Churchfield Open Space Committee in Wigginton is pleased to announce that the ‘Fitness for All project’ has been completed! The wheel spinner and the trinity cycle are fully inclusive and can be enjoyed by wheelchair users. A grant of £12,000 was awarded from the Tesco Bags of Help fund made available from the 5p charge on carrier bags. The Purey Cust Trust, The Outlook and local fundraising helped to make the project possible.

T

he project was to add five new pieces of outdoor gym equipment to the existing apparatus. The new pieces have been chosen so that they can be used by a wide range of the community – young, not so young, fit and those who wish to get fitter.

Pictured are members of Tesco staff from the Clifton Moor store who came along to inspect and try out the new equipment, Nicola test driving the inclusive equipment and a spritely 84 year old local resident keeping herself fit.

A CUSTOMER’S EXPERIENCE

ell, what now I thought to myself, I’ve been retired a year and doing all my hobbies - golfing, walking, bowling and my beloved garden. I now wanted to take in the beauty of my garden on a hot summers evening or even on a cold winter’s day, but it was impossible. Why? My conservatory! We added it to our property 20 years ago and it now obstructed the view. We used it for occasional dining but it was swiftly turned into a great room for coats and shoes!

The Moment:

Then came the moment that changed my view! I came across an advert in the local paper for Wetheralds Roofing Systems. I gazed at my conservatory which looked sad and unloved and decided that’s it, I need my view, I want my room back, I want my garden! I was impressed by the swift and polite response from Wetheralds - but I like a bargain and would need to research and compare the costs. Would I be better knocking it down and rebuilding?

cold conservatory into a 365! My term for the number of days I would be able to use my room.

The Big Day:

We, like many people, were excited but also a little worried by the upheaval. I had no need to worry at all. The team turned up on time, were brilliant, polite and worked so hard. It took 5 days, lots of tea and a couple of visits from the building inspector (an essential part). The end result is spectacular. And the reason for my conversion, my pride and joy, can be viewed from a ‘garden’ room come rain, wind, sun or snow.

The Visit:

Chris arrived from Wetheralds and I knew straight away I’d backed a winner. He explained the system from start to finish, the guarantees, the tile colours and make. I explained my reasons, which took a good hour!

The Quote:

There it was, the quote, all complete and left for me to consider, the construction format was what I wanted and I knew there was no way the cost would be anything like a rebuild. It had to be Wetheralds they gave me the push I needed to convert my miserable

Three Years On And Still Going Strong

I

t is hard to believe it is three years ago that the idea of starting a community cinema in New Earswick was first mooted over a glass of wine in a pub. To say that our small group of local volunteers are delighted with the response we have had is something of an understatement. From gaining seed funding through to financing our own equipment from the British Film Institute, the John Lewis Community Fund and the Ward Committee in this short period of time we are now a fully established community cinema based at the Folk Hall. Our audience has grown during this period so we now can boast that recently we have had sell-out shows primarily due to showing a wide variety of films requested by our film goers in a very friendly and relaxed environment, not to mention that the bar and café are open for refreshments before and during the interval. Our next film will be the Cold War thriller ‘Bridge of Spies’ directed by the one and only Steven Spielberg

screening on Friday 25th November at 7.30pm – tickets available online or at the Folk Hall reception. To celebrate our success and to say a big ‘Thank You’ to our audience and to invite anyone who would like to find out more about us we are holding a ‘Come and Meet Us’ free evening on Saturday 26th November from 7:30pm. We will be showing a selection of short films but with plenty of time to chat to other film goers and to meet the team over a drink and nibbles. There will also be the opportunity to become one of our members - £5 for an annual subscription that offers reduced prices on your tickets from £4 to £3 per adult or £2 down to £1.50 for under 12’s. If you would like more information please phone Chris on 01904 750537 Do come along – you can be assured of a very warm welcome. The Film at the Folk Hall Team www.filmfolkhall.com

money I’ve earned to create a valuable nest egg, is it fair that when I die, a great chunk of that is taken and dished out to people who’ve been dicking about all their lives?

I

had a heated debate the other day – one of many I have on an alarmingly regular basis – with an acquaintance who was trying to get me to see that Inheritance Tax (IHT) is fine and that I ought to stop bleating on about it and accept it as just one of those things you have to live with. It stops the rich from getting richer and redistributes wealth, he said. Which it does. But is that fair? If I’ve worked 12 hours a day 7 days a week, bought a nice house and wisely invested the

Britain has the highest death duties of any of the world’s major economies. In the UK, if you’re worth more than £325,000 you’ll cop for this tax. In the States you don’t pay unless you’re worth more than $3 million. The average IHT take of the BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China) is just 1%. Several developed economies including Australia, Israel and New Zealand have scrapped death duties altogether. Yet Britain remains stubbornly stealing almost half of your money when you die. If you want your family and not the taxman to benefit when you die you need to take action now. CONTACT SPORTS BY MARY MAHON

With summer now faded far into the distance, a lot of summertime pleasures become passing memories – swim suits, sunglasses and sun cream are put away to gather cobwebs for another year. In 2016 in particular, we also say goodbye to the Olympics for the next four years. The 17 days of ephemeral joy was incredibly diverse; it allowed people all over the world to enjoy a range of sports, from track to archery to boxing. However, although all sports are enjoyed and respected in the Olympics, in reality, some sports are sometimes stigmatised…

Contact sports such as boxing, rugby and even football are often criticised and given a bad reputation of inciting violence, racism and physical injuries, causing various organisations and petitioners to try and ban such sports. Unfortunately, this does not come without reason. Aggression on pitch or outside of a ring is not unheard of, which often becomes worse when it is hyped up by the media. Also, accidents occasionally do happen that can lead to minor or critical hospitalisation, giving people very good reasons to be cautious or disapproving of certain sports.

01904 769327

www.smart-dry.co.uk

Because of the large levels of debate and controversy surrounding contact sports, over the years many countries have banned them, boxing especially. However, sporting clubs are often positive places that can truly inspire you to become your best possible self. Personally, I’ve found kickboxing to be life-changing! Both teaching it and training has demonstrated to me its life-long influences, both inside and outside of the club. It teaches discipline and respect, self-defence and self-control, determination and a desire to reach your full potential. Rather than the associated aggression and violence with kickboxing, the focus on technique and skill is paramount, making sparring matches and fight nights a contest of skill rather than strength. Sports are an intrinsic part of our world culture, so maybe we should try to keep an open mind towards all sports. Perhaps even give one a go – because as the saying goes “the pain of process is temporary but the feeling of achievement lasts forever”. 18 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Who will the family choose – the Mother Who Left, or the Mother Who Stayed? A beautiful read that tells the story from each family member’s point of view, as they struggle to understand, forgive and find their place.

Pines (The Wayward Pines Trilogy, Book 1)

Blake Crouch Not a recent release this one, but worth a mention nonetheless. Secret service agent Blake Crouch wakes up in a small American town after a car crash. His partner is dead. His wallet is missing. And the more he learns about the small town, the more he knows he needs to escape. For a start there’s the dead body of one of his colleagues rotting away in an abandoned house. Any why can’t he get through to anyone on the outside? A must for fans of Twin Peaks or Lost, this book has inspired a hit TV series. You’ll be ordering the second in the trilogy seconds after reading the last page.

Yellow Crocus

Laila Ibrahim Mattie is a slave and, as such, has no choice but to leave her own baby in order to act as nurse to the plantation owner’s newborn daughter. She soon becomes a mother-figure to Lisbeth, who becomes far closer to Mattie than to any of her natural family. But Mattie knows that one day she’ll have to choose between the two children – the one she raised and the one she gave birth to. As Lisbeth grows up, she too will have to make a life-changing decision about whose side she’s really on. Gripping, emotional and impossible to forget.

used to being alone on her little creek in Cornwall. Then Frank Drake, battered by the war and grief, washes up on her shore. They form an unlikely friendship and as they reveal the stories they’ve kept hidden, each helps the other to heal. A lyrical, poetic read about friendship, love and the strength of the human spirit.

A Boy Made of Blocks

Keith Stuart Alex has always struggled to connect with his eightyear old autistic son, Sam, and has become more and more distant from his wife. As his family seems to disintegrate before his eyes, he discovers an unusual way to connect with Sam: the computer game Minecraft. But is it enough to reunite the family? Funny and poignant in equal measures.

The Bees

Laline Paul In the colony every bee has its place, its duty, its very reason for existence. Difference isn’t tolerated and punishment is swift and violent. Flora 717 wants to fulfil her role and serve her queen, but struggles to fit in. She’s a sanitation worker, destined to spend her entire life cleaning the hive. But she can’t help but be enticed by the thought of flight, and the world outside the colony. The hive is at risk, and to save it Flora 717 may have to break the most sacred rule of all. Fascinating. People of Poppleton called on to join the British Heart Foundation in its fight for every heartbeat Anne Dixon from Poppleton, and member of the York BHF Fundraising Branch, will be joining the fight against heart disease by holding an afternoon of Christmas celebration and music to help support the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) life saving research. The concert will take place on Sunday 27th November from 2pm – 4pm at the Poppleton Centre. It will be an afternoon of Christmas music and popular favourites, perfect for all the family. Cards and gifts will be available to purchase for those looking to pick up a few Christmas presents, as well as a raffle and the popular BHF buzzwire!

Tickets can be purchased from the Poppleton Centre Café or by contacting Anne on 07743 794319. Heart and circulatory disease is responsible for around 155,000 UK deaths each year – around one every three minutes. Through the public’s generosity, the BHF will fund half a billion pounds of new research over the next five years which will be central to discovering vital treatments for people living with heart and circulatory conditions. The BHF urgently needs more people to organise their own fundraising events to continue its fight against heart disease. Last

year the public raised an incredible £143 million for the BHF’s life saving research. Jane Mooney, BHF Fundraising Manager for York said, “We never cease to be amazed by the extraordinary ways people like Anne fundraise for the BHF. Every contribution, big or small, plays a crucial part in every breakthrough we make so we are incredibly grateful for their support. But we urgently need more people to join our fight for every heartbeat and help power our life saving research. That’s why we’re calling on everyone across the UK to organise their own event to help support our vital work.”

For inspiration and everything you need to organise a successful event, sign up to get your free fundraising pack by visiting www.bhf.org.uk/yourway

TRAVEL Symi Island

By Solange Hando

anchor, there a ship or a dolphin. At the top, the view opens out on the fjord-like bay of Pedi where below the rose-tinted hill tops, holly oak and conifers tumble down almost to the water’s edge. There, life moves at a leisurely pace, fishermen mend their nets on the quay and a narrow coastal path leads to the quiet cove of St Nicholas, reached only on foot or by water taxi.

J

ust 35 minutes from Rhodes by catamaran, Symi is one of the prettiest Dodecanese islands, ‘a neo-classical beauty’, they say, ‘ blanketed by the blue sky’, rising like a sentinel on the edge of the Greek archipelago. It’s only 8x13 km but the traditional ambience and scenery simply steal your heart away. From afar, the island is a rock, barren and dry, but sail into the harbour and on the deep blue inlet of the Aegean sea, Symi greets you like a dream with all the colours of the rainbow nestling in the cusp of the hills. Shimmering reflections, pastel-hued houses at the waterside, Chorio, the old village climbing up the slopes, toylike windmills along the crest, it’s a delightful scene which budding artists aim to capture from myriad vantage points. Chorio and Yialos, the harbour, make up the capital named after the island. Stepping ashore in Yialos is awesome. In such a lovely place,

where do visitors start? Some make their way along the scenic promenade around the horseshoe harbour, others while away the time in shaded tavernas where salads and seafood come with glorious views. Bells chime all around, tiny chapels beckon up interminable flights of steps and the beautiful mansions of the Italian era glow in the midday sun. At the end of the peninsula, the iconic clock tower leads to a smaller bay where pleasure and fishing boats bob at anchor and a sprinkling of parasols betrays the presence of a beach. Meanwhile downtown, a few stalls sell sponges and olive oil but beyond the harbour, it’s all tangled lanes and steps, hundreds of them, climbing up to Chorio through tightly-packed houses. It’s easy to lose all sense of direction in this never-ending maze but there are decorated gables and balconies, potted plants, secret gardens planted with vines, jasmine and citrus trees and courtyards covered in patterned pebbles, here an

St Nicholas is no exception for all along this deeply indented coastline, near-deserted coves nestle below the cliffs, lapped by clear turquoise water, with not a road in sight. There are cruises around the island, past uninhabited islets and dramatic outcrops, but the most enchanting stop along the way is the Orthodox Monastery of Panormitis down south, rebuilt Venetian-style in the 18th century and claiming the world’s highest Baroque tower. It’s dedicated to Archangel Michael, the island’s patron saint, and when day visitors have left, it’s a wonderful haven of peace framed by pinecovered hills on the edge of the sea. Approaching Panormitis by sea is magical but one can return on a mountain road reaching over 600 metres at Oros Vigla, the ‘lookout’. It’s a scenic rollercoaster through forests and open land, peppered with ruined castles, forlorn chapels, goat tracks, footpaths vanishing into the distance and unforgettable views, from the rugged meandering coast to the nearby islands and, far below, the colourful harbour of Symi bathed in translucent light.

POPPLETON COMMUNITY RAILWAY NURSERY IS GETTING READY FOR CHRISTMAS!

P

oppleton Community Railway Nursery enjoyed a successful Heritage Day and 75th Anniversary celebration in September. The Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Dave Taylor, opened the 75th Birthday Celebrations by delivering a short speech outlining the history of the nursery and its restoration by the charity since it took over the site in 2009, before cutting the anniversary cake. The Lord Mayor was accompanied by the Lady Mayoress, Ms Susan Ridley, the Sheriff Mr Jonathan Tyler and the Sheriff’s Lady, Mrs Brenda Tyler.

After a busy autumn season the Nursery is now thinking ahead to Christmas! A Christmas Open Day will be held on Saturday 10th December (10am-3pm), followed by a final sale and collection of orders on 17th December. (10am1pm). There will be a selection of tree and table decorations, indoor wreaths, garlands and bowls of hyacinths. Fresh wreaths will be on sale and can also be made to order by contacting the nursery. Visitors will be able to look around the nursery buildings, the narrow gauge railway, the wagons, trucks and other interesting artefacts. The

model railway will be in operation in the Museum that houses the archives and photographic collection. Tea, coffee and homemade cake will be on offer too! Please support the nursery so that it can continue with its aims to restore the site and keep up its work with local health agencies providing a safe place for people to volunteer who are recovering from physical and mental health issues.

NE MUSICALS

MUST SEE SHOW OF THE SEASON NE Musicals Autumn show will be the fantastic Fiddler on the Roof. With a revival planned on Broadway and the West End, it seems like the perfect time to perform this heartfelt piece of theatre. Fiddler on the Roof is a musical with music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and book by Joseph Stein, set in the Pale of Settlement of Imperial Russia in 1905. The story centres on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions as outside influences encroach upon the family’s lives. He must cope both with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters, who wish to marry for love – each one’s choice of a husband moves further away from the customs of his faith, and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village. Enjoy a great night at the theatre with many wellloved musical numbers such as If I Were a Rich Man, Matchmaker Matchmaker, Tradition, Sunrise Sunset, Far from the Land I Love and To Life. 44 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

BE IMMERSED IN THE MAGIC OF A HANDMADE CHRISTMAS AT BURTON AGNES HALL At its Christmas opening, Burton Agnes Hall simply oozes festive cheer. Simon and Olivia Cunliffe-Lister, with the keen help of their children, decorate each room of their home to create a magical wonderland with traditional and contemporary handmade decorations. This year visitors can look forward to seeing a bountifully decked Christmas tree from the estate’s forest, and as usual the decorations are predominantly handcrafted, often using natural garden produce. Simon Cunliffe-Lister says: “My family and I all love dreaming up unusual Christmas decorations using the abundance of natural treasures around us. We seek inspiration from our gardens and grounds, which provide a rich array of plants, flowers and seed heads, and also the magnificent Yorkshire Wolds on our doorstep.” Whilst visiting the Hall, young visitors are encouraged to follow the children’s trail and find

homemade felt snowman dolls hidden in each room. Children are invited to visit Father Christmas by the fireside each Sunday in December that the Hall is open, between 12-4pm, at which each child will receive a special Christmas gift. As dusk falls, the grounds are illuminated with twinkling lights spotted across the topiary bushes and the roaring fire in the Great Hall glows warmly. Visitors can take their newfound Christmas inspiration to the courtyard, perhaps to enjoy a festive treat in the cafe and to visit our Christmas Shop. This is a whole shop dedicated to Christmas, for visitors to recreate the Burton Agnes Christmas magic at home. For those seeking a Christmas gift or two, the three shops will be newly stocked with a vast range of festive gifts, perfect for under the tree. Castle Howard adds spice to Christmas with enormous Gingerbread replica 19 November – 23 December 2016 of the house in a superbly opulent style. Gardener Adele Hirst has been charged with collecting sufficient foliage from the grounds to bring the gardens into the house, so visitors can expect elaborate swags, wreaths and garlands made from the evergreen shrubs and trees, that provide the grounds with year-round colour, decorated with fruit and berries.

A

Following tradition, perhaps the most ornately decorated tree in the county will be displayed in the Great Hall – a 22ft spruce covered with thousands of lights and baubles – where roaring fires will be lit every day during the run up to Christmas to fill the room with the scent of pine and open fires.

When complete, the enormous confection will be four metres by three metres, and depict not only the famous house, complete with its dome and the parterre garden envisaged by Vanbrugh, but also by many of the architectural features found in the 10,000 acre estate, including the Temple of the Four Winds, Mausoleum and the 7th Earl’s monument. The windows of the house will be illuminated, and just like at the real Castle Howard, a fine mist will descend from Ray Wood to create a perfect winter scene.

“Castle Howard is well-known for offering one of the best Christmas experiences in the country, so this year, we’ll be opening slightly earlier – Saturday 19 November - so that all the visitors that come for inspiration for their own Christmas designs can enjoy the decorations at a slightly quieter time – allowing them to linger and take more photographs and notes to help create their own displays,” adds marketing manager, Rachel Underwood. “The family Christmas really kicks off on Saturday 26 November, with the first of our Audience with Father Christmas sessions. After exploring the gardens and the decorated house, this is the perfect way to start the festivities in incredible style!”

huge architectural gingerbread model of Castle Howard is set to take pride of place at the heart of the stately home’s festive celebrations this year, when London-based biscuiteers, Bompas & Parr, recreate Vanbrugh’s original design for the grand estate from gingerbread and icing.

“Bompas & Parr have a global reputation for creating spectacular confections, from a jelly version of the London skyline to a gingerbread version of London’s lost architecture, which featured in the Christmas window of Selfridges in London. This model of Castle Howard will perhaps be the most detailed and most elaborate house that they have constructed, and we’re delighted that visitors are going to be able to enjoy this amazing creation as part of our Christmas programme,” comments the Hon Nicholas Howard, who commissioned the design.

Throughout the season, visitors to Castle Howard will enjoy daily live music from choirs, classical musicians and other musical guests, and younger visitors can enjoy a festive trail woven throughout the decorated house.

The model will on display from Saturday 19 November until Friday 23 December.

Visitors are advised to book early for sessions with Father Christmas, and the Christmas Afternoon Teas, as availability is limited and they are expected to book up quickly. A special evening on Sunday 18 December will also enable visitors to explore the house at twilight, with last entry at 7.00pm.

Whilst the biscuiteers will be working on the model, the rest of the Castle Howard team will be working like Santa’s busiest elves to decorate the public areas

Castle Howard is open daily from 19 November to 23 December from 10.00am (last entry to the House 4pm, 5pm at weekends) with admission prices of £18.95 for adults with concessions available. Under 4s get in free, and family tickets (two adults and up to three children) are available for £47.85.

THE FESTIVE SEASON By Jimmy Hannon, PCSO 5637 We are now approaching the festive season and Christmas is just around the corner. Many of us will be attending at least one Christmas party in the next few weeks, whether that be with work or with family and friends. Every year the Police reinforce the message about not drink driving, but there are individuals that continue to drive with excess alcohol in their systems. A conviction for drink driving will have a massive impact on anybody’s life. Many of us will drink more over the Christmas period than we usually do. You should always consider the most appropriate way to get to and from any Christmas party, whether that be by bus or taxi, or to have one designated driver who will not drink and transport other guests. It is important to also remember to consider how much alcohol will still be in your system the morning after a party. If you are in any doubt whatsoever, then you should make appropriate arrangements to get into work that day. Many people are caught over the limit going to work or taking the children to school the next day.

DISCOUNT FOR 2 OR MORE ROOMS

You should also be aware of the effect that alcohol will have on you or others. It may make people more aggressive and the festive season would be ruined if you were to be arrested following a drunken fight. Alcohol can also make you far more vulnerable to those that would wish to commit offences. Always try to avoid finding yourself alone in town when drunk as you could become a victim of crime. Thefts from those who are drunk are all too common. Keep your personal possessions safe, do not take more cash out with you than you will need and keep phones and other items on your person and secure. Try wherever possible to stay in groups so that you do not find yourself alone in unfamiliar locations with people that you do not know. The Christmas period is a time when we can all have fun, but remember to take simple precautions to make sure that it is remembered for the right reasons and not the wrong ones.

BENEFITS OF HIRING AN ACCOUNTANT

Phil Kitchen is a Chartered Accountant and director at PCLG, Chartered Accountants, one of York’s longest established firms of Accountants

Save you money (pay less tax!) Although accountants cost money, they can save you money. This may be by making sure are claiming the maximum amount of tax relief available to you, or making sure tax returns are submitted to the relevant people on time as to avoid costly penalties and fines.

W

ith more and more resources being made available online, many small business owners think that don’t necessarily need to use the services of an accountant – and go it alone. Perhaps seeing it as an unnecessary expense, or perhaps thinking all they do is fill in the boxes on the tax forms. Although not every business needs an accountant, here are some of the benefits of hiring one:

Save you time Time is money as they say – and an accountant can free up your time by taking over some of the more mundane tasks such as bookkeeping and more complex tasks such as filing VAT Returns, accounts and Tax Returns, so you can concentrate on what you’re best at, and grow and develop your business and earn more money!

Accountants should keep up to date with the ever changing tax laws and rules. Often tax advice is the bread and butter for an accountant, and they will deal with it day in day out, as opposed to just once a year when you do your own tax return. They should be able to make sure you pay the minimum amount of tax possible within the rules. An accountant can also give advice on how to spend money efficiently in terms of business expenditure – and keep an eye on overheads, which can so easily spiral out of control.

A wealth of knowledge Most accountants are small business owners themselves, and deal day in day out with other business owners. A good accountant will have a wealth of business knowledge, whether it be providing advice on the day to day running of your business, or in more complex areas such as acquisitions or business disposals.

For more information on how we can help your business, contact us now for a FREE Initial Consultation with a Director (no obligation) email phil.kitchen@pclg.co.uk, call 01904 558300 or visit www.pclg.co.uk for more information. STEAMED DATE PUDDINGS WITH CARAMEL SAUCE Makes 4. Ready in 1 hour 20 minutes

3

Divide the mixture between the prepared dishes and cover each with a square of pleated baking paper then pleated foil and secure with fine kitchen string. Place the dishes in a deep roasting tin and pour in enough boiling water to come halfway up the sides of the dishes. Bake for about 50 minutes until risen and firm to the touch.

4 These moist and sticky mini steamed puds will go down a treat after a Sunday roast! Serve with pouring cream or a dollop of vanilla ice cream to make them extra indulgent.

To make the caramel sauce, gently heat the butter and sugar in a small pan, stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved. Simmer for 1-2 minutes until syrupy then remove from the heat and stir in the cream to make a smooth sauce. Turn the puddings out onto warmed plates and spoon over the sauce.

TIP Vanilla bean paste has a very intense flavour so use sparingly. If unavailable use 1tsp vanilla extract or for a change of flavour try 1-2 tsp coffee extract instead.

INGREDIENTS: • 115g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 115g caster sugar • 2 medium eggs beaten • 115g self-raising flour • 1tsp ground mixed spice • 55g ready-to-eat dates, chopped • 1/2 tsp vanilla bean paste (see Tip) • 1tbsp milk FOR THE CARAMEL SAUCE • 50g unsalted butter • 75g brown sugar • 75ml double cream

1

Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C Fan/Gas Mark 5. Lightly grease 4 x 175-200ml ovenproof ramekin dishes (or metal pudding basins) with the extra butter. Line the base of each with a circle of baking paper.

2

Place the butter and sugar in a bowl and beat together until pale and creamy. Gradually beat in the eggs, adding a spoonful of the flour if the mixture begins to curdle. Sift over the rest of the flour and mixed spice and fold in until thoroughly combined. Fold in the dates, vanilla bean paste and milk.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas

and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

FIRST DRIVE

By James Baggott

We Try Nissan’s Bonkers Bladeglider For us mere mortals the BladeGlider offers a drift mode, similar to that found on the Focus RS, for sideways fun – yet more technology debuting here that is likely to filter down to other Nissans. The BladeGlider did feet softly sprung, though, more hot hatch than sports car over the kerbs. But most importantly it was great fun – and, with the instant torque available from those electric motors, it felt swift too.

As we hit the back straight of the twisting kart track in the middle of a shanty town in Brazil, the wail of the concept car’s electric motors reaches a crescendo. It’s banshee-like in pitch and would rival a hover bike from Star Wars in tone – this is noise like no electric car that’s gone before it, and it’s pointing to the future of electric vehicles (EVs) for Nissan. We’ve come to Rio de Janeiro to experience this mad Batmobilelike sports car concept, dubbed the BladeGlider. With a narrow front track and aerodynamically designed body that widens like an arrow to the rear, the concept car takes design cues from the Delta Wing Le Mans racer of 2012. Although that car’s track time was short lived, the lessons Nissan learned are brought back to life in this mad sports car concept that’s part Robin Reliant, part McLaren F1, part Caterham. 66 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

With two 174bhp electric motors, independently powering each rear wheel, the BladeGlider is good for nearly 120mph and 60mph in under five seconds. It’s been built in conjunction with F1 experts Williams Advanced Engineering and features an unusual three-seater layout where both passengers sit behind and either side of the driver. Unfortunately, we weren’t allowed a drive of the multimillion pound concept car; however, we did get to experience it from the passenger seat. Even from here it’s clear the BladeGlider offers a completely unique driving experience. Those two front wheels and the widetrack rear make for a planted and agile ride. On the tiny test track it whipped between corners with a whiff of tyre-smoking oversteer when our exuberant test driver got playful.

It’s not supercar fast, but will push you back into the sports seats and throw you around enough to induce a whiff of travel sickness. There’s currently no word on range, though – which we’d guess means it’s currently pretty poor. Unfortunately, the chances of being able to order a BladeGlider from your local dealer any time soon is highly unlikely. This is just one of two produced and they’re likely to be the last. Well, in this form at least. So you might be wondering what the point is? Well, Nissan says that’s simple, really: they want to make people realise electrification doesn’t mean dull, and a sports car concept as bonkers as this proves otherwise. Nissan is long overdue a sister car to the Leaf, the world’s best-selling EV, and many will be hoping the lessons Nissan has learned here will lead to a thrilling follow-up. Fortunately, after a very short passenger ride, all the signs are pointing in the right direction for a smash hit.

Garden Fireworks

By Pippa Greenwood

With bonfire night on November 5th just around the corner, you may be planning to celebrate with the traditional display of fantastic fireworks - but why not also think ahead and plant yourself a few garden fireworks to enjoy for years to come? At this time of year, there are still several flowers that look stunning in the border and very much remind me of fireworks. Red hot pokers or kniphofias, also aptly known as torch lilies, are flamboyant plants that are mostly natives of southern and eastern Africa. Try Kniphofia ‘Brimstone’ for a rich yellowy-orange colour, or if you want something smaller then how about ‘Little Maid’, which has ivory flower spikes topped with a warm yellowish tint and reaches a height of about 2 ft (60cm). ‘Fiery Fred’ really lives up to its name with extremely bright orangey-red flowers, while ‘Alcazar’ has blazing red flowers. They should be available in garden centres now, and they do well

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE if planted out in early autumn or spring in a sunny spot with a well drained soil. Once established you will have a regular display that really will go off like a rocket! The crocosmias too help to provide some much needed colour at this time of year, and if you want a real splash of fire then take a look at ‘Lucifer’, with its flame-red, almost trumpet-shaped flowers clustered along an elegantly arching spike, or for golden yellow flowers consider ‘Canary Bird’. There are lots of different varieties of crocosmia (once known as montbretia) and provided you choose a site with sun or part shade in a well drained yet also moist soil, they will thrive – but that bit of moisture is essential if they are to flower as you hope. Grow them in completely dry conditions and you will be bitterly disappointed. Pot-grown plants should be available for planting now or in the spring, or you can buy the corms to plant towards the end of winter and, provided they are in the right spot, these plants will look like the ultimate elegant arching firework. your scene, then take a look at the sedums or ice plants, many of which have star-shaped flowers, either clustered together in tight heads or held as stunningly pretty single flowers. Some of the sedums, such as ‘Autumn Joy’, are still just about in flower at present, but even if you have missed much of the display for this year, plant pot-grown specimens now and you can guarantee that from late summer you will have a tremendous show of blooms for several weeks, certain to attract bees and butterflies. The angels’ fishing rods, diorama, also have arching stems which are produced in great numbers surrounded by broad, almost grass-like leaves, each measuring up to 5 ft (1.5m) in length. The stems are covered with rich pink funnelshaped flowers about 2 in (5cm) long, which dangle and sway in the wind - and the great thing about them is that they just keep on bobbing straight back up again, even on a windy site. Thinking ahead to the summer, consider growing some lupins, either one of the many yellow varieties or one of my favourites, ‘My Castle’, which has rich red flowers - just like a rocket racing skywards, but far less noisy.

A visit to your garden centre at this time of year will reveal a plentiful supply of shrubs and trees putting on a fine display to make you reach for your wallet in double quick time. If you want a tree in your garden but don’t have much space, then the Kilmarnock willow, Salix caprea ‘Kilmarnock’, is a good option, and reaches a height of no more than 6 ft (1.8 m) after 10 or 15 years. It has long weeping branches and bright yellow fuzzy catkins that cluster all over the stems before the leaves break in spring, far better than any real Roman candle I know! At this time of year, look around nearby gardens and see what a fantastic display autumn foliage can put on. Plant anything with good autumn colour and you could guarantee you will have a

glowing bonfire each and every autumn. A visit to your garden centre at this time of year will reveal a plentiful supply of shrubs and trees putting on a fine display to make you reach for your wallet in double quick time. And finally, when you are thinking about Guy Fawkes’ night, remember that if you are going to have a firework display, try and make that bonfire at the last minute in order to minimise the risk of hedgehogs or other wildlife hiding beneath the heap and then coming to an untimely end. The hedgehog is one of the gardener’s best friends, as it eats huge numbers of slugs and many other garden pests.

Pepsi is a little shy when she meets new people but soon comes round and is very affectionate and loving. She came in with a flea allergy so has some hair loss on her back and legs, she is receiving treatment for this and is improving daily. Pepsi really enjoys her walks so an active home is a must. Pepsi isn’t used to being left alone, so would need a home where she will have company for most of the day. Riley is such a sweet and friendly boy with an outgoing nature. Although he is quite big he walks well on a halti and is quick to learn. He would be best with children of secondary school age as he may knock younger ones over! He is very active so a home where he will get lots of long walks is ideal for him. He seems very sociable with other dogs and could possibly live with a calm female dog.

How can I tell if my pet is the ideal weight? By Ellie Kift SVN, Station House Vets Knowing whether or not your dog or cat’s weight is ‘ideal’ can be difficult sometimes, especially as we see our pets every day. Canine and feline obesity is a growing problem. Did you know that pets which are as little as 20% overweight are at risk of diabetes, arthritis and heart disease? Enough doom and gloom, there are some easy steps to take. The first step is to identify your pet’s ideal weight. Once that has been established you can devise a weight loss plan. If your pet’s ribs are easily felt with no fat cover then it is 20% below the ideal body weight. If the bones are raised with minimal tissue between the skin and bone then it is 10% below ideal body weight. The ideal body weight is when the ribs can be felt through a slight cover of fat, and a waist is visible from above. If it is difficult to feel the ribs through moderate fat cover, with a slightly sagging abdominal fat pad seen in cats, then it is roughly 10% over ideal body weight. But if your pet’s ribs are difficult to feel under thick fat layer, with a cat having a prominent hanging abdominal fat pad, then your pet is 20% above ideal body weight. Although it can be daunting, there are easy and fun steps to getting your pet into shape. Changing to a weight loss food can help significantly. Here at Station House Vets we advise the Hills metabolic food which has been clinically proven to provide 28% body fat loss safely in dogs and cats in two months. It works with each pet’s unique energy expenditure, activating the body’s natural ability to burn excess body fat. It is important to ensure that you measure out the required amount for your pet according to the feeding guidelines, and a common mistake is to leave food available at all times. It is best to restrict mealtime to 10-15 minutes, and to try to feed at the same time every day. Another tip is to feed your pet before having your own meal, to lessen their tendency to beg, and 76 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

even to keep your pet in another room whist you are preparing and eating your own meals. Get active with your dog, take extra walks in addition to regular walks, and take your dog out with you whenever possible. Walking on different surfaces, such as sand or shallow water provides extra resistance and enhances fitness. Consider taking your dog to hydrotherapy. Make food fun! Slowing your pet’s eating times can increase their feeling of fullness. Toys filled with food provide engaging ways for pets to eat, and puzzle feeders slow them down and can utilise their natural foraging habits. There are some brilliant food puzzles for dogs that you can buy, or even make yourself, and for cats there is plenty of choice too; to increase your cat’s activity and mental health just go to foodpuzzlesforcats.com to get some ideas. Here at Station House Vets we offer free nurse weight clinics, where we can check your pet’s weight, and give your pet a weight record card and provide you with all the information you need to get your pet into shape. I hope to see you and your pet soon.

Christmas Fair at Duncombe Park, Helmsley

Tickets are now on sale for Yorkshire’s most exclusive shopping event. The Christmas Fair, in aid of the NSPCC, starts with a glamorous preview evening on Thursday 17th November and continues during the day on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th November. Duncombe Park is not normally open to the public and gives shoppers the unique opportunity to not only start their Christmas shopping but also to explore the Duncombe family’s beautiful and impressive stately home. Following the enormous success of 2015 when the NSPCC raised £58,750 the Fair will again benefit from an extra day’s opening to attract the Saturday shoppers. Tickets for the VIP preview evening are available at £15 and include entry to the champagne reception with a free glass of Perrier Jouet champagne and canapés generously provided by the Feversham Arms Hotel in Helmsley. Numbers are limited for this ‘party and shopping’ experience so advance booking is essential. Daytime tickets cost just £8 if ordered via the website or can be bought on the door for £10. Tickets include free transport to and from Helmsley car parks or from designated parking areas in the Duncombe Park grounds. Around 70 carefully selected stalls provide gifts in all categories from Christmas decorations and cards, to kitchenware, toys, books, jewellery, fashion, homeware, interiors and gentlemen’s’ accessories. Half of this year’s stalls are first time exhibitors and bring plenty of new ideas for shoppers, whilst the remaining bestselling ranges return once again. 10% of each stall holders’ takings aswell as income from ticket sales, sponsors and donations, and raffle tickets go direct to the NSPCC’s vital services for children, young people and families in the Yorkshire region.

Duncombe Park is not normally open to the public and gives shoppers the unique opportunity to not only start their Christmas shopping but also to explore the Duncombe family’s beautiful and impressive stately home. the stunning surrounds of Duncombe Park,” says Karen Storey, joint chairman of the Duncombe Park Christmas Fair organising committee. “We would like to thank Jake and Raffaella Duncombe for being so kind in welcoming our Christmas Fair to Duncombe Park, so please support us in this wonderful event and order your tickets soon.” Jake Duncombe concludes “Rafaella and I are delighted that this great fundraising event will be staged here at Duncombe Park and we welcome the opportunity to support such a worthy cause as the NSPCC. I have enjoyed being a visitor to the Fair in previous years and look forward to opening our home to the Christmas Fair shoppers in November.” For more information and to book tickets please visit www.nspccduncombeparkchristmasfair. co.uk
