elcome to our October edition. Summer holidays are over, our children back to school or off on new ventures at university and the like. I always feel this time of year is a new start. It is certainly a new start for our daughter who is off to university down south. Having lived village life, she’s very excited by the bright lights of a big city. Everything will be on her doorstep, independent and, we trust, being responsible! I’m sure she’ll have a fantastic time (amongst the studying!) but I think I’d miss seeing the horizon and the beautiful scenery in Ryedale and the Vale of York – that and our dogs! Good luck to all those heading off to University this term. Autumn, and the weather here has already cooled down – and that’s something after our rubbish summer! Plan ahead, with our fantastic local companies for servicing your boiler, repairing

your roof or stocking up on logs and fuel in time for even worse weather to come! Have a look through this edition for their details. If you like watching films on the big screen, pop along to Nellivision at the New Earswick Folk Hall. On Friday 16th October see Selma, a US drama based on the marches from Selma to Alabama in the 1960 involving Martin Luther King Jr. Tickets available two weeks before the showing. And if you have pre-school kids, enjoy knitting and a natter or love a Scrabble challenge, then head to Strensall Library, which is now a charity. The library hosts a Lego Club, Minecraft Club, a Knitting Club and a Scrabble Club during the week. A great way of keeping tabs on us is through Twitter and Facebook, both of which we use to help promote local events and businesses. The great thing about social media is that it’s FREE. Keep in touch and let us know what’s happening in your area. Until next month…

developing the disease during their lifetime, it’s never been a better time to become breast aware. The solemn fact is that nearly 12,000 people die from breast cancer each year here in the UK. The disease also affects men, although it is less common, with around 400 males diagnosed each year. Factors that might trigger the disease include age as more than 80% of women who develop breast cancer are aged over 50, while in men it can occur after the age of 60. Family history can also a factor, although only around 5% of people diagnosed have inherited the faulty gene. The positive news is that more than 85% of people survive breast cancer beyond five years. A key factor to helping survival is early diagnosis and monthly checks. Visit the website www. breastcancercare.org.uk for hints, tips and advice.

KITCHEN & BEDROOM DESIGNS TO SUIT YOU
Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected too.
T
he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours. For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. Your team of installers were first rate and I couldn’t fault them one bit... The end result is exactly what we

wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had
her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with anything less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 25 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and P.V.C. windows. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can source

ANNIVERSARY SALE UPTO 50% OFF just about any kitchen you may have seen and enables them to offer one of the widest choices of styles and designs in Yorkshire. Gary said: “Some showrooms are a bit more limited because they are tied into one manufacturer – but we deal with around 20. We have more than 200 different kitchen styles available to our customers. “Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected, too.” The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a completely stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from start to finish. The process begins with a visit from Instyle’s designer Paul Streicher, who will listen to the customer and add lots of creative ideas to plan a kitchen that fits perfectly with their ideas, personality and home. A CAD (computer-aided design) will be produced, helping the customer visualise the end result. Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions. Although a new kitchen is a big
investment, Instyle consistently beats its competitors on price – customers often ring up to double check Gary and his team haven’t made a mistake on the quote. But if money is tight, an Instyle facelift can freshen up a tiredout kitchen for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen for a fraction of the cost. We are completely flexible; even if someone just wants a new sink, we’ll work with them to give them what they want. “We’ve found we don’t need to use any pressurising sales tactics, we just make sure we provide exactly what the

Taking simple steps can protect your property and person from becoming the victim of a crime and by using technology responsibly and appropriately the risks are minimised.
BACK TO SCHOOL By Jimmy Hannon, PCSO 5637
A
s our children return to School after the Summer Holidays it is a good time to reinforce just a few simple messages to them, particularly those older children who use mobile phones, social networks and cycles. We have previously publicised our property marking tool, and local events will be advertised on our twitter pages and an online application can be found on the North Yorkshire Police website. Many children ride cycles to School and do not always keep them as secure as we would hope. If the worst were to happen and the cycle was stolen by using our Dot Peen marking machine the chances of the cycle being recovered are dramatically increased. Cycle locks are not expensive and the seconds that it takes to lock up your cycle could be what prevents it from being stolen. Our property marking machine can also mark mobile phones and tablets with your house number and postcode in a matter of seconds, again improving the chances of any property being identified as stolen by Police Officers. It is also sensible to advise our children about their use of mobile phones and social networking sites. They should only speak to or contact persons that they know and only ever send messages that they would be happy to be made public. There have been a great many cases, several well publicised, relating to grooming offences relating to the use of popular social networking sites.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas
and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

s one of the UK’s most reputable suppliers of kiln-dried ash and seasoned hardwood logs, Dalby Firewood consistently supplies top-grade timber to their customers with their friendly, efficient service. All of the timber bought by Dalby Firewood is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified, ensuring the ongoing quality of their products. Dalby Firewood is also registered with HETAS. The FSC promotes environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world’s forests, while HETAS is the official body recognised by the Government and approves biomass and solid fuel heating appliances, fuels and services. Joseph Woodhead, owner of Dalby Firewood, based at Low Marishes between Malton and Pickering, said: “We deliver to London, Leeds, Hull and all over the UK from our North Yorkshire base and delivery is FREE to York, Scarborough, Malton, Pickering, Driffield, Whitby, Filey, Bridlington, Helmsley and surrounding areas. “Our online reviews make us the highest rated firewood in the UK. with a clean, bright flame. No seasoning, no roaring fire! “Our hardwood logs - eucalyptus, ash, birch and beech - are supplied and stored separately ensuring our customers receive the best quality logs for their purposes.”
Over 90% of 307 reviewers gave us a 5 star rating Every last log is sustainably sourced and seasoned. Dalby Firewood tests for moisture before despatch, giving perfect burn quality. With these thorough quality checks, their firewood is delivered bone-dry and ready to burn. But why is seasoning so crucial to timber quality? Joseph explained: “Seasoning means drying the wood out until it’s in prime burning condition. Freshly felled and chopped hardwood has about 50% moisture content. Trying to burn wood in this condition is harmful to the environment because it produces creosote, which can cause chimney fires.
Delivery is usually within five working days, dependent on location and the time of year as the team are generally busier during the colder months. A member of the Dalby Firewood team contact the customer first to arrange a day and time. Local delivery drop-off vehicles fit down most driveways and the delivery team will leave the logs in the bag without mess or stress. Crate deliveries are also arranged at a time to suit. Their comprehensive website includes details about all their products, including wood crates, bulk bags and nets, kindling and natural firelighters. Visit www.dalbyfirewood.com for more information. TAX ON PROPERTY INCOME PART 1
T
Phil Kitchen is a Chartered Accountant and director at PCLG, Chartered Accountants, one of York’s longest established firms of Accountants
he York rental market is booming, and with it more people are becoming landlords. York was recently named as one of the top 5 cities (outside London) for rental growth.
not capital. Any losses can be carried forward to offset against future property profits.
Property related taxes can be a complex area, so I’ve compiled some of the “Frequently Asked Questions” we are asked by our new and existing clients, which this time focus on Tax Returns and Income Tax.
To be an allowable expense for income tax, it needs to be incurred as a result of renting a property, and can include Council Tax, Water, Gas, Electricity, Insurance, Letting Agents Fees, Service Charges, Accountants Fees, certain Legal Fees, and Mortgage Interest. Relief is also given for repairs where the property is restored to its previous condition, or repairs are made using modern alternatives. For example, HMRC now accept that replacing single with double glazing windows can be classed as a repair. Any costs which enhance the property value, e.g. building an extension, are classed as Capital Improvements, and tax relief is given when you eventually sell the property.
If I rent a property do I need to do a Tax Return?
It depends…. You will need to submit a Tax Return if your rental income is more than £10,000 in a year, or if your rents are less than £10,000 but the profits after allowable expenses are more than £2,500. For profits of less than £2,500 the income can be reported to HMRC over the phone. If you already complete a Tax Return and then start to receive property income you have to declare it irrespective of how much.
My property makes a loss - do I still need to do a Tax Return?
Firstly, is your property really making loss – just because the mortgage repayments each month are more than the rent received, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have made a loss for tax purposes. Confusion can arise where the mortgage on the property is Capital Repayment, meaning each monthly payment is made up of interest, and a repayment of the original borrowing (capital). For tax purposes, you only get tax relief on the interest, and
What expenses can I claim for?
What if I rent a room in my house out?
When you rent a room in your house, you are allowed to receive up to £4,250 tax free (halved to £2,125 if let jointly with someone else). If the rent is less than the limits you don’t need to do anything. If you receive more rent than the limits, then you need to complete a Tax Return and may have to pay tax. You can either pay tax on the actual profit made after allowable expenses from renting the room(s) but not claim the £4,250 tax free allowance, or you can pay tax on the rents in excess of £4,250 but not reclaim any expenses.

HOVINGHAM’S STAR ATTRACTION H
ovingham is one of Ryedale’s prettiest villages, and its monthly Village Market is its star attraction!
And as Christmas approaches, this award-winning event is the ideal place to buy seasonal produce and special gifts. In November and December, there are three chances to buy a wide range of products, starting on Saturday 7th November, followed by a double helping in December on Saturday 5th and Saturday 19th - just in time for the festive feast! Stalls are set up in the Village Hall car park and inside the hall, trading from 10.30am to 1.30pm.
With around 40 stallholders attending each month, from regulars to new arrivals, the main theme is food, glorious food, including fresh vegetables, meat, fish, cheese, pickles, oils, honey, bread, cakes, pastries, beer, wine and lots more. Other stallholders can include leather goods, jewellery and even a family history stand! Caroline Davis, one of the event organisers, says: “We’re all volunteers who organise and set up the market. Local community groups can run the Community Café to help raise funds for their cause. Around £50,000 has been raised so far.”
Caroline continues: “We have a guest stall each month, and we’ve recently introduced the Market Apprentice, supporting a local artisan, currently stonemason Samuel Chapman of SC Stone Sculptures, Stonegrave.” The market takes a rest until February, resuming on Saturday 6th February, and afterwards on the first Saturday every month. Each market has a theme, from healthy eating to honouring the autumn harvest. If you are interested in having stall, then send an email with subject ‘Run Stall’ to themarket@hovingham.org.uk www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 47

Who dares to visit Burton Agnes Hall’s Spooky Woodland Trail?
T trail!
his half term, Burton Agnes Hall’s historic woodland will be transformed into a fantastically spooky woodland
Intrepid visitors will be greeted by Beryl Burton, the Elizabethan house’s resident witch, who will be busy creating her potions in the Great Hall, before following a creepy, eerie hunt amongst dramatic and creative Halloween scenes. Try not to let the creaking trees and rustling bushes scare you whilst searching, and if you see the resident ghost, Ann, be sure to say hello! Once the puzzle has been solved, a treat awaits in the Gift Shop. After the thrill of the spooky woodland trail, visitors can relax in the comfort of the courtyard and enjoy homemade meals, light bites and indulgent treats in the cafe, while the Gift Shop and Home & Garden Shop will be brimming with original gifts and seasonal and Yorkshire-made produce. Visitors can also choose from a range of home
grown plants, all propagated from the gardens. The Michaelmas Fair, on the 24th and 25th October, starts half-term week with a bustling street fair; a wide variety of intriguing stalls and an array of traditional street performances keep fair goers entertained throughout the weekend. The spooky Halloween pumpkin trail runs from 24th October to 1st November and is designed for all the family to enjoy. There is no extra charge for the trail: it is included in the normal admission price and is free for Burton Agnes Hall members.
OPENING TIMES: 11am - 5pm ENTRANCE: Adults £7.00, OAPs £6.50, Children (5-15 years) £4.00, under 5 year olds free.

Birthday Parties
We are delighted to celebrate our fourth anniversary in October by offering new patients the opportunity to register with our exclusive practice membership scheme. For a simple monthly payment your routine costs of examination, scaling, x- rays, etc are covered allowing you to spread the cost of your dental treatment throughout the year. Additionally after 6 months you will also qualify for a generous 20% DISCOUNT on most other treatments should you need them. Dr Parker BDS has selected this particular plan because she has experience of it working well for patients over an extended period. It also offers a redundancy protection clause, unlike most other membership schemes, which is good to know in these challenging times. There are a host of other benefits which we can discuss at the open day. We’re here to help with any questions you might have. We also offer fee per item treatment for those not wishing to take this plan. SHORT STORY GERTIE’S LUNCH by Jackie Brewster
Harry sighed, pulling down his cap. For the third time today someone had left his pasture gate open and a couple of ewes were already eyeing up the exit. He dreaded this time of year. The first warm weekend and all the fair-weather walkers came out in their posh boots, without a thought that this was working land. As he was about to shut the gate he spotted a lady stood on the other side, frantically searching through her bag. “Are you the farmer?”. Her face was flushed with annoyance. “I’m in a dreadful hurry and I need assistance”. “How can I help?” Harry said calmly. “I’ve misplaced my mobile. It’s rather expensive”. “When did you last have it?” Harry asked patiently. “I was photographing this sheep”. She pointed at a ewe who was sitting down chewing thoughtfully. “Old Gertie here”, Harry smirked, “yep, she’s a pretty girl”. “I don’t suppose someone like you owns a mobile?” she said dismissively. “If I could only call mine I might find it”.
“I can hear it but I can’t see it”. “It’s as I feared”, Harry said. “What is?” She looked up. “Gertie here, she’s partial to technology”. “I beg your pardon?” “This season she’s swallowed three mobile phones, an MP3 player and a DVD remote control”. “Aren’t sheep vegetarians?” she asked suspiciously. “Try telling her that”. Harry scratched behind Gertie’s ear. “Mind you, they always come out good as new”, he smiled, “my phone’s working alright isn’t it?” The woman turned pale and quickly handed the phone back to Harry. “You just have to wait for nature to take its course”, Harry warmed to his subject, “sheep don’t have fast metabolisms, but they’re regular”. “I have to wait for her to digest it?”. She pulled a face, “how long will that take?” Harry looked at his watch, “I’d say it will put in an appearance at precisely midday tomorrow”. She gulped.
Harry did have a mobile phone, old and battered, but it did the job. He smiled courteously and handed over. She took the phone with an expression of distaste. Gingerly she tapped in the number.
“Then there’s the unpleasant job of sorting through the business”, Harry added cheerfully. “it’s not for the squeamish”.
Sure enough, a ringing phone could be heard, muffled, as though wrapped in a thick duvet.
“I suppose I could always do that bit”. She looked up with relief, but Harry raised his hand before she could speak, “on one condition”.
The woman searched with her ear to the ground. 66 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
The woman buried her face in her well-manicured hands and sobbed. Harry took pity.
“Anything, just name it”, she pleaded. “You’re to promise never to leave a farm gate open again”. Harry pointed to the offending gate. “I promise”, she said guiltily, “I’m sorry about that”. “We’ll call it a deal”, Harry said, holding out his hand to shake on it. She glanced at his grubby nails, and backed away. “Here’s my work number”, she said, cautiously passing him a business card with her fingertips, “call me when it’s over”. Then she hurried through the gate, making a big show of closing it behind her. Harry watched her go while stroking Gertie. Finally he leaned over and whispered, “Up you get old girl”. Slowly the sheep clambered to her feet. Harry picked up the warm phone from the flattened grass beneath her. It was a fine phone, very expensive. Yet, even without a handshake Harry considered himself an honourable man. He contemplated the number on the business card. He would phone it tomorrow, just after midday.

FALL In October, nature puts on a magnificent show for us to wonder at, as the trees shed their leaves in glorious Technicolor. As the nights draw in and the ‘Fall’ is upon us, snuggle up with a good book about those silent giants standing guard in the garden.
Eucalyptus - Murray Bail
Written by an Australian author this is a modern fairy tale about the widower Holland and his beautiful daughter, Ellen. She, along with his vast collection of eucalyptus trees are his two most prized possessions and when Ellen turns nineteen, Holland reveals that he will permit her to marry the man who can successfully identify all the varieties of gum trees on his property. Of course, Ellen’s not too pleased with the plan, and doesn’t think much of all the suitors who show up at the estate. That is, until a mysterious stranger appears and her curiosity suddenly gets the better of her.
The Lie Tree - Frances Hardinge
Faith’s father is found dead, and under mysterious circumstances, leaving Faith determined to get to the bottom of what happened. What she finds is a set of drawings that lead her to a strange tree that seems to flourish and grow when lies are whispered to it, and there are plenty of mistruths to go around in this tiny island community. The Lie Tree’s fruits bear hidden secrets and Faith will have her work cut out to try and separate the truth from the poisonous fiction. Just don’t believe everything you read.
Snow Falling on Cedars -
David Guterson Set in the remote and isolated Puget Sound in America’s Pacific Northwest, Snow Falling on Cedars is the story of a remote community rocked by the murder of a local fisherman. San Piedro Island is not the sort of place you want to make enemies, and when Japanese- American, Kabuo Miyamoto is accused, it becomes clear that among the beautiful and dense cedars lies a painful history. It’s a wonderfully atmospheric book that’s full of suspense and tragedy. A great read for a wet autumnal day.

she has to help raise him. At first he climbs and plays on her trunk. When he, known only as ‘Boy’ turns into a teenager he needs some money and so the tree suggests that he pick and sell her apples. And so this relationship between the two of them continues, right into the old man’s dotage. Each time the tree helps Boy we are told, “And the tree was happy”. It’s an enchanting story to read to children, or simply to treasure for yourself.
Eats, Shoots and Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation - Lynne Truss
This might be cheating a little, and it’s not strictly about trees or leaves, but it is about branches of English grammar and the panda of the title that’s getting a bad rap because of some dodgy punctuation. Never again will we be afraid to use colons and semicolons but thanks to Truss, we will embrace them. This book is a must-read for anyone who has ever felt frustrated by unnecessary commas on menus; for anyone who has shuddered when the incorrect ‘your’ is used by a friend or colleague in an email; for anyone for whom standing in the queue at the ‘ten items or less’ (FEWER!) checkout in the supermarket is simply torture. Read, digest and enjoy.
The Faraway Tree - Enid Blyton
The Magic Faraway Tree is actually the second story in Enid Blyton’s series, coming after The Enchanted Wood, and is much-loved by children and adults the world over. Joe, Beth and Frannie have moved into to a new house and they discover this fantastic place that is right on their doorstep. They quickly make friends with Moonface, Saucepan Man and Silky the fairy and are transported to different lands and places. The series is a cult classic and it’s like a big bear hug on a chilly October evening. Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 6th October

Cremona - The City of Music glass case to be played by a world-renowned virtuoso in the adjoining auditorium.
S
outh of Milan in the lush Po Valley, Cremona is a special place where tradition lingers in every cobbled lane and shaded square. Renaissance and medieval buildings glow red and gold in the morning light, the belfry claims the world’s largest astronomical clock but above it all, the heart of Cremona beats to the sound of music as it has done for centuries. First there is the cathedral, a centre of musical excellence since the Middle Ages when Pope Gregory XIV, formerly the city’s bishop, spread its reputation far and wide. Today, an organ recital in the Duomo still sends shivers down your spine as superb acoustics enhance its amazing range. Then come the city’s illustrious sons, Claudio Monteverdi, born in 1567, composer, singer, musician and priest, and Amilcare Ponchielli who wrote his first symphony at the age of ten before falling in love with the opera. in the 19th century, he gave his name to his native village and the town theatre, one of the first in northern Italy. But for many music lovers, Cremona is synonymous with Antonio Stradivari, the 17th - 18th century violin maker who lifted the craft to unrivalled heights. He would walk through the forests of the Dolomites, they say, to find the perfect wood and made around 1,100 violins and other string instruments. There is no record of his birth in Cremona but the town claims him as its own. After all, he did come from a local family and his instruments were labelled ‘Cremona’.
Stradivari died in 1737, aged 93, but Cremona’s love affair with violin making is ongoing, with 157 ‘luthiers’ in town. Stefano Conia is one of them, inviting visitors to share his life’s passion in a tiny workshop filled with tools and violins hanging all around. ‘It’s a family tradition,’ says the father of two, ‘ and the violins are like my children.’ Attention to detail, soul and feel are the hallmark of every piece signed by Stefano, each one unique and a ‘mirror’ of himself. Back in town, visitors wander around the piazzas where monuments and statues recall Cremona’s musical past. Others head for the ‘historical shop’ offering among the finest specialities its own violins made of almonds or chocolate. Later, when towers and palaces turn fiery red in the setting sun, you can almost hear the haunting sound of violins reaching out to the darkest corners and floating down river towards Mantua and Venice, in the wake of a festive musical cruise.
Around 500 original violins have survived, including the ‘Lady Blunt’ auctioned in 2011 for over £9 million, donated anonymously for earthquake relief in Japan. Meanwhile, Cremona cherishes its own beautifully preserved collections in the Civic Museum and in the Violin Museum, where occasionally a priceless ‘Stradivarius’ comes out of its Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 6th October

MOTORING BMW X1
By James Baggott three most popular cars sold by the manufacturer, so this new model has a lot to live up to. Aimed at “young, sporty” buyers, the maker believes this is a lifestyle vehicle that can be used every day. It’s taller and wider than the model it replaces, has a higher seating position, but has shrunk 1.5cm.
WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET? WHAT IS IT?
This is the totally revised BMW X1. Gone are the weird looks of the last model – which managed to clock up 730,000 sales around the world – and in
comes a fresh, chunky design that makes it look like a shrinkwrapped X5, but in a good way. One in 10 BMWs sold was an X1 at the height of its success and it was continually in the top
There is one petrol engine and three diesel options. The former xDrive20i has 190bhp, 280Nm of torque and can hit 62mph in 7.4 seconds. Emissions are 146g/km and it’ll return 44.8mpg. Diesels come in 18d, 20d and 25d variants. The >>

positively crowded. Direct rivals come in the shape of the Audi Q3 and Mercedes GLA, both competent but we’d argue not quite as good looking as the Beemer. But then cast your net further afield and you could include the Nissan Qashqai, Kia Sportage and recently launched Renault Kadjar in the same bracket. Those latter options lack the cache of the BMW’s premium badge, but offer considerably better value for money. See what we mean about choice? >> sDrive18d is front wheel drive only, the latter two four-wheel drive like the petrol. We’d pick the £30,630-priced xDrive20d, though. Why? Well it comes with four-wheel drive, is £6k cheaper than the top-of-the-range model and still performs well. With 188bhp and 400Nm of torque it will hit 62mph in 7.6 seconds, return 57.6mpg and emits 128g/ km.
WHAT’S THE SPEC LIKE?
Standard equipment is plentiful. Navigation, DAB radio, 40:20:40 split rear seat (with handy buttons to fold them flat from the boot), alloys and an automatic opening and closing boot that you can operate with a wave of your foot, are all included. As you move up the range, larger alloys, different trims and LED headlights are added, while the
M Sport adds a smart styling pack too. On the options list is a heated steering wheel, Harman Kardon speakers and a head-up display, plus lots more.
WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?
Frankly, quite brilliant. For what is essentially a small SUV it belies its size on the road. Bumps are soaked up beautifully and the ride is plush. The high seating position is excellent and commanding, the steering feels a little uncommunicative at times but isn’t off-putting while the diesel engine and automatic gearbox work seamlessly. It’s a very competent package and feels decidedly premium. BMW has worked hard on the chassis for this new X1 and it shows.
THE VERDICT
We loved the BMW X1. The last one passed us by somewhat – we felt the looks were strange and out of proportion, and it seemed to lack the style we’d come to expect from BMW. This new model is much better, though. The chunky looks make it really stand out on the road – even if it does look like a miniature X5 (but that’s no bad thing) – and the interior is a lovely place to spend time. As you’d expect it feels premium, rides beautifully and has an impressive amount of standard kit. We’d go as far to say that if you’re looking for a premium SUV with diminutive dimensions, this should be at the top of your shopping list.

TO BALL OR NOT TO BALL - THAT IS THE QUESTION By Ellie Kift, Student Veterinary Nurse at Station House Vets The risks of dogs and their tennis balls Canine dental health is one of those things that can sometimes be forgotten about and therefore problems that may be occurring are not noticed straight away. One item that may not come across as damaging to your dog’s teeth is the tennis ball. Lots of dogs love to play, carry and chew their tennis balls and, although a fun and inexpensive toy, the results can be very expensive. Most owners are aware of the potential choking hazard a tennis ball can present to a large breed dog, but they also create another more subtle danger to your pet. The outer material layer of a tennis ball has been made to be durable and resistant to hard daily use on a tennis court which is tough and abrasive. So when your dog uses the ball, dirt and grit get ingrained into the outer fibres causing the ball to be even more abrasive.
When choosing a new ball/toy a good way to test that it’s not too hard for your dog’s teeth, is to see if you can dent it with a fingernail. If so, it’s the perfect one for your pooch. In addition to avoiding tennis balls, regular brushing of your dog’s teeth and providing them with a heathy diet including the allimportant play time with dental toys and treats can go a long way in keeping their mouth healthy. If you are concerned in any way about your pet’s teeth please make an appointment to see a vet. Our veterinary nurses can also advise you on doggy dental care. So it’s goodbye tennis ball, hello healthy teeth.
This means that when your pooch is enjoying their playtime with their tennis ball or sat in the garden happily chewing, it gradually wears down the enamel of their teeth which is called ‘blunting’. If you have a serious tennis ball addict then you will see that the tips of the teeth have been blunted. To avoid this happening, it is advisable to use a smooth ball or dental toy as a replacement to the tennis ball they shall love it just as much!

Chase and Romany are very friendly and love each other, they are inseparable! They have been waiting for new homes for a long time now and really deserve that chance. Chase is very friendly, Romany can be a little territorial at times but with the correct handling she is really sweet so a home with older children would be ideal.
Rupert is a lovely, friendly lad who is in desperate need of a place to call home. He is housetrained, doesn’t chew and walks nicely on a lead. He can get over excited so he will need a bit of training to learn some basic manners. He could live with older children and possibly with a older, calm dog after a successful introduction.

He needs a large hutch and run as he can be territorial of his space, he also needs to go to a home with an existing female rabbit for company. GARDENING
Leaf Litter By Pippa Greenwood majority of leaves that are dropping from our own and our neighbours’ trees are pretty enough, and for a while their bright reds, yellows and oranges look stunning both on and off the tree. The problem is that it seems as if there is a virtually endless supply of them and after that initial flurry of pretty colour, the positive feeling soon starts to diminish.
Are you surrounded, engulfed and swamped with huge quantities of fallen leaves? Whether they come from trees in your own garden or from a neighbour, the deluge of leaves that falls in autumn is often enough to get level headed, tree-loving gardeners eyeing up chainsaws! At this time of year most of us are feeling as if we are being buried alive by falling leaves. Yes, the vast
Leaves that are allowed to build up in your garden can cause problems - on the lawn they smother the turf grasses, often causing patches of die back, largely due to lack of light and oxygen. If the crowns of the less tough herbaceous perennials or alpines are covered in a soggy blanket of leaves, they too start to deteriorate. So, like it or not, you need to do something - and the sooner you get started the better! A spring-tined rake is perfect for raking leaves off the lawn, and can even work quite well on a gravel drive (provided you don’t rake too deeply and end up ploughing up the stones too!). If you have a lot of lawn >>

>> or a lot of leaves (or worse still, a big lawn and lots of leaves too) then the easiest way to deal with them is to mow the lawn. Provided you keep the hopper or grass-collector on the mower, when you empty it out you’ll have a fantastic mix of grass clippings and chopped leaves. On beds and borders you’ll usually end up hand picking, or if time and energy is in short supply you could invest in a leaf vacuum or a leaf blower (and this can, of course, be used on most drives and paths, and lawns too). Great, so you spend a lot of time and effort collecting up all these leaves. Then what? Don’t take them to the tip or make a bonfire: make leaf mould. It is as easy as anything and makes a fantastic soil mulch or conditioner…for free! Leaves are best rotted down on their own (they take longer to decompose than the rest of the stuff in your compost heap and need less air and warmth), so make yourself a simple and inexpensive leaf mould bin. Just drive four stakes into the ground to make the corners of a square, and then attach chicken mesh around the outside to make a cage. Stack the leaves in, tread or firm them, add some water if they are dry, then more water if the weather remains dry…and then leave them be. If you can chop larger or tougher leaves (like horse chestnut) up first, they’ll rot down

much faster - either mow them with the lawnmower or ‘chop’ them with a sharp spade. It is worth avoiding very spiky leaves (the spines seem to withstand rotting and get you later!), and any that are very leathery and tough - mainly evergreens such as holly, laurel and camellia, or those from sycamore and plane. If you want to speed the process up you can add a leaf mould activator, which is available from garden centres. If space, time or money is short then you can also make leaf mould in a bin liner or other bag. Choose a

If you don’t like the idea of black plastic, then there are now some lovely jute mesh bags which can be crammed full of leaves and act as a perfect container whilst the leaf mould is forming, but will eventually rot down and add to the useful material you produce. You can see these on my website www.pippagreenwood.com/products.
