Editors Letter elcome to the June edition of the Handy Mag.

It’s Fathers Day on 19th June and I’ve included an article all about when and where it started (page 56). I was quite surprised that it is based on more than commercial opportunism! Not that we should not value the day, especially if that entails a family treat. Jinnah Restaurants are offering a bottle of Indian larger for every Dad dining on Fathers Day (page 2) and also giving away a meal for two in the Handy Mag competition this month (page 3). Curried out! Are you up for a challenge? You could be one of the first people to cycle 146 miles on the brand new fully signed “Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Route” and raise money for our local charity Ryedale Special Families in the process. To do something new, get the pulse racing and contribute to a local gem of a charity is a great opportunity. The circular tour starts and finishes at Norton College and will take place over 2 days in July, with an overnight camp at Hutton Cranswick Sports and Recreation Centre. The Challenge is suitable for experienced cyclists, families or groups. Have a look at page 57 for more details, and feel inspired. My NEWS on the magazine front this month is that The Handy Mags have a brand new website at www. thehandymag.co.uk. Developed with Computer FX of Malton, it has searchable listings of all the businesses who currently advertise in the magazine, as well as local groups, community news and upcoming events. Please have a look and let me know what you think! Finally, the winner of the April competition was R Cartmell if Wigginton. Well done!! Until next month....

CK Home Solutions

CK Home Solutions is the kind of company you’ll thank your lucky stars you found.

T

heir gem of a kitchen service leaves customers delighted every time. Their full complement of design, electrical, joinery and plumbing skills, mean you gain confidence from knowing the people you buy from are the same people who design and carry out the installation work on your new kitchen. Specialising in electrical work, Haxby-based CK Home Solutions is also the best place to go for appliance repair or replacement, rewiring projects and, for a luxurious touch in your home, remote controlled switches. The thank you letters sent to CK Home Solutions invariably mention the quality of the workmanship, honesty, and courtesy. Their excellent manner while working in customers’ homes makes them an often-recommended favourite of families and elderly homeowners. Partner Kevin Hilditch said: “We give excellent value for money, treat customers’ homes with total respect, and always do what we said we would. We value our customers and they value us.” Kevin and his brother-in-law Casey Raven formed the company a year ago. Kevin has a background in telecoms and electrical engineering, and Casey is a skilled joiner. Both also have worked in the building trade, which for Casey involved some great experiences working on high-profile luxury homes for a property developer. That means they are well qualified to take care of every aspect of a typical job. Occasionally father-in-law Peter, and his wealth of experience as a retired builder, is drafted in on larger jobs. As a small family business with very small overheads, pricing is competitive and a friendly, personal service is guaranteed. One of CK Home Solutions’ happiest customers is Kevin himself – who has now completed two extensions on his own home.

Their largest project was a York restaurant, DeClair’s, Peter lane, which was completely gutted, rewired and reconstructed by them, including the structural work and building the kitchen. CK is registered with NAPIT, which means their work is guaranteed to a high safety and quality standard. They are currently working towards membership of the Federation of Master Builders and Trustmark – a register of governmentendorsed tradesmen working to national standards. Contact CK Home Solutions on 01904 769392, Kevin for electrical work on 07708 215415 or Casey for joinery on 07525 159893. Their website is at www.CKHomes.co.uk

from their customers... “This is to let you know how very pleased we are with the new kitchen you recently fitted for us. We were particularly pleased with your friendly, thoughtful approach to the work and your helpful suggestions.” Mr Walker, Wigginton “From requesting a quotation through to finishing the job, CK Home Solutions entirely lived up to their promises. Casey and Kevin were professional yet friendly, tidy and meticulous, and paid a great deal of attention to detail. Nothing was too much trouble for them, and they went out of their way to ensure that we were delighted with the end result.” Martin, Strensall

FOOD

Lemon Cream Strawberry Tart Who doesn’t look forward to our lovely local strawberries? Take the children to a local pick-your-own, then make this lovely tart, which is also good with raspberries and blueberries or a mix of all three!

Ingredients (serves 6) 1 pack of puff pastry 3 large tablespoons of good quality lemon curd (or make your own with the recipe below) 1 egg 150ml double cream 2 punnets of strawberries (hulled and sliced lengthways) Caster sugar for sprinkling

For the lemon curd (recipe from Delia)

150g caster sugar 2 large lemons (grated rind and juice) 4 large eggs 100g unsalted butter (cut into small pieces)

Method 1. If you decide to make your own lemon curd place the grated lemon rind and sugar in a bowl. In another bowl whisk the lemon juice together with the eggs and pour this mixture over the sugar. Add the butter, and place the bowl over a saucepan of barely simmering water. Cook, whisking constantly until thickened – about 20 minutes, making sure the water doesn’t boil or the curd will become grainy. Allow to cool completely. 2. Line a baking sheet with non stick parchment. Roll out the pastry on a floured surface until you get an even rectangle around 12 by 16 inches. Carefully move to the baking sheet. 3. Make an egg wash by beating the egg with a little water. 4. Using a sharp knife cut a 1 inch strip off each side of the pastry and set aside. Brush the egg wash about an inch wide all around the edge of the rectangle and replace the strips, pressing down gently to help them stick and trimming where necessary. This will create a border for the tart. 5. Brush the top of the strips with egg wash and lightly sprinkle with caster sugar. Prick the bottom of the tart all over with a fork and refrigerate for 30 minutes. 6. Preheat the oven to 200C/180 fan/400F/Gas 16 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

mark 6. 7. Bake the tart case for 15 minutes until golden. Check to see how it’s doing, you may need to turn the tray around if your oven is hotter in the back. The middle will probably have risen too so just poke it with a sharp knife to let the steam out as it bakes. If the pastry is browning too quickly turn the oven down and cook for another 5 minutes – it should only need 20 minutes in all. 8. Cool on a wire rack and as it cools press down the centre with a spoon or palette knife so that the inside of the tart is flat. Don’t worry if it flakes a bit. 9. When totally cool transfer the tart to a serving plate. Whip the cream to the soft peak stage with a little sugar if you like things sweet. Reserve half of the cream to serve with the tart, mix the rest with about three generous tablespoons of lemon curd – taste it, add more if you like. Spread the lemon cream over the base of the tart. 10. Overlap the sliced strawberries in rows as shown in the picture or just scatter as you like. Serve at once while the pastry is still crispy.

FOOD

Good food, quality ale and a hospitable welcome What more could you want from a traditional pub? Try a stunning beer garden, guest ales on draught and a cosy setting.

A

dd to that a warm welcome to every member of the family, and you’ve got a complete recipe for comfortable family days out and convivial evenings at the bar of The Highwayman, in Sheriff Hutton near York. The latest menu is worth a try, launched by chef Steve Starling on June 1. Steve has been at The Highwayman for a few months & is highly experienced. The traditional steak pies and fish dishes are still present and correct – but there’s a few more exotic ideas to try out, too. Tetley and Timothy Taylor is on draught permanently, and there’s a new guest ale every week. The Highwayman has Cask Marque approval, meaning they are regularly spot-checked for the quality of the cask beers they are serving, and customers are always guaranteed a great pint of real ale. The beer garden is, as owner Gavin Greenbank puts it, ‘literally a garden’. Since taking the pub on two and a half years ago, Gavin and his wife Lucy have worked hard to improve the garden atmosphere by planting attractive borders, making it a pleasant place to enjoy a refreshing summer drink – as many happy customers are doing right now. When the great British weather does its worst, the interior of The Highwayman is an equally pleasant place to spend a few hours. The building dates back to 1780, and there has been a pub on the site since the 1600s. It has retained a strong traditional character which lends a lot to the comfortable atmosphere. Dominoes, darts and pool are all available indoors. A function room at the back is ideal for small family gatherings – if your party is large, the pub will be closed to visitors to make your ‘do’ more comfortable. Food is available every day, with the same menu at the same price served in the restaurant or in the bar. The snug is in great demand most weekends, so if you want to eat in a cosy setting, book early. A special deal for pensioners is available from Tuesday to Saturday lunchtimes (12-2pm) at £8.95 for two courses and £9.95 for three. Gavin said: “Our customers always seem to

appreciate the food, drink and good atmosphere here. After two-and-a-half years I’m happy to say we welcome a lot of friendly faces back to The Highwayman over and over again!” Gavin, Lucy and their 12-strong team of kitchen, bar and waiting staff look forward to welcoming you to The Highwayman very soon!

The Highwayman is open until midnight on weekdays and 1am on Friday and Saturday nights. Food is served at the following times: Mon 6-8.30pm, Tue-Thu 12-2pm & 6-8.30pm, Fri-Sat 12-2pm & 6-9.30pm, Sunday Carvery 12-4pm & Evening menu 6-8.30pm

HEALTH & LIFESTYLE

e-books on the beach What’s the best ebook reader for bookworms? Holidays: a time to relax, turn off the phone and catch up on all those books you’ve been meaning to read. Thanks to ebook readers there’s no need to stuff your suitcase full of books when you travel, but which one’s the best for holiday reading?

T

here are three big players in the UK ebook market: Apple, with its iPads; Amazon, with its Kindle; and Sony, with its Reader devices. There are others - for example Waterstone’s offers a range of ebook readers from firms including Elonex and iRiver, while recent Android-powered tablet computers boast Google Books software - but for now it’s a three-horse race. There are some big differences between the devices. If you want a do-it-all that doubles as an ebook reader, then Apple’s iPad 2 is the way to go: it’s a proper computer that can edit video, make music, browse the Internet and play games. Android-powered tablets are very similar.

There are downsides to all that power, though. The first is price - iPad 2s start at around £440, rising to nearly £700 for the top-end model. The second is the screen - tablet computers use laptop-style screens, which are hopeless in direct sunlight. They’re also power hungry. The iPad’s tenhour battery life is impressive 20 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

in computer terms, but it’s terrible compared to a device such as Amazon’s Kindle. The Kindle (pictured here) has an e-ink display, which is the closest to real ink on paper from an electronic device. That means it’s quite happy in direct sunlight, very easy on the eyes – there’s no tired-eyes feeling that comes from staring at a screen for hours - and it’s very small and light, although it also means the Kindle can’t cope with colour images, let alone video. E-ink only uses power when you change the page, so battery life is extraordinary: tablets need charging daily, but e-ink devices last for weeks between charges. There are two Kindles: the Wi-Fi-only one at £111, and the 3G one at £152. The former is the better bet. Unless you intend to read newspapers on it (you can subscribe and have them delivered wirelessly) there’s no real need for a 3G mobile connection - simply transfer books via Wi-Fi when you’re at home. Kindles store up to 3,500 books, so you’re unlikely to run out of things to read when you’re travelling. The problem with the Kindle is that it’s an Amazon-only

effort: if you want to read copy-protected books (most mainstream ebook releases are copy-protected), you’ll need to buy them from Amazon. It’s a similar story with the iPad 2 its iBooks software expects you to buy from the iBooks shop. If that sounds too restrictive, then Sony would like to show you something. Sony’s Readers (pictured below) are based on the same idea as the Kindle and costs much the same (at the time of writing the PRS350 is £149), but it has two interesting features: its e-ink screen is a touch screen, which makes using the device much easier, and its formats of choice are EPUB and PDF. Such books are sold in all kinds of places - all Waterstone’s titles are in EPUB or PDF format - so you’re not limited to a single ebook shop. So what’s best? If you want a do-everything device, choose a tablet - but if you’re a bookworm, try an e-ink display.

Our final thought... The choice ultimately comes down to your favourite bookshop. If it’s Amazon, choose a Kindle; if it isn’t, think Sony.

Self-tanning

T

he danger of sitting out in the sun is well documented and, in any case, the UK isn’t blessed with a steady supply of the natural option. But self-tanning options have really improved in recent years and from just a few £s you can gain a completely natural tan. If you just need colour on a small area such as your face, a home self-tan is an ideal option. If you haven’t tried any of the available lotions recently then you won’t know how light or dark the results will be, so you should do a 24 hour patch test. Choose a small area of skin that really won’t notice e.g. on your stomach and apply some of the product. Take care not to cover the area for the first hour or so otherwise the lotion will just rub off and give you a false ‘reading’. One of the key things to remember when doing home tanning is that it’s imperative to wash your hands

Not only can they reach all those difficult areas, but the tan will be more even. With the right skin preparation and with someone else applying the tan (either a lotion or spray), not only will you have better results but it will last longer too. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01904 310230 • 21

BUSINESS

It could now be time to consider a company car

by Andrew Walker, White Kite Chartered Accountants

Changes to the tax treatment of company cars have been aimed at encouraging the purchase of lower emission cars.

Taxable deduction for the company.

For cars that have CO2 emissions of no more than 110g/km, which includes certain models of the Mini Cooper, Toyota Prius, Smart, and Fiat 500, if your company buys one of these low emissions cars new (not second hand), it can claim a tax deduction for the full cost in the year of purchase and for all the running costs.

Low tax charge for the employee.

Where the car is provided to an employee of the company for their own private use, or for the use of a member of their family (perhaps for son or daughter), the employee will be taxed on 10% of the list price of the car for petrol cars and 13% for diesels. For example a Mini Cooper 1.6D has CO2 emissions of 104g/km and a list price of £15,730. The employee will be taxed on £2,045 per year, and if their top tax rate is 40% this will give an annual tax bill of £818. The company will also have to pay class 1A NICs of £282 per year, but that cost is

tax allowable for the company. The company can also pick up the full cost of all servicing and insurance for the car with no extra tax charges. As always please seek professional advice before taking any action.

TRAVEL

On the Tip of Africa

The Cape Peninsula H ead for the top of Table Mountain and the Cape Peninsula spreads below you, a dramatic finger of land jutting out 60 km into the ocean, bristling with peaks, fringed with rugged cliffs, coves and bays and pockets of suburbia surprisingly at ease in this stunning National Park, on the very edge of Cape Town.

It’s easy to forget the courage of early explorers as they sailed down the coast to round Africa’s most south-westerly point. Battered, as it was then, by the cool waters of the Atlantic, the western shore is peppered with exclusive villas – think Madonna, Beckham or Elton John - and sandy beaches such as Camp and Hout Bay, renowned for their seafood restaurants and romantic sunsets. Inland, the road climbs over craggy mountains, skirts vineyards and riding stables and, here and there, a thatched cottage straight out of rural England, before reaching the nature reserve. Stretching from the west coast, with its rich ‘forest of kelp’, to the eastern shore and the usually calm waters of False Bay, these wild open lands are covered with fynbos, an ancient scrub with over 1000 indigenous plants, including the bright King Protea and orange Pincushion, making the Western Cape the smallest but richest of the world’s six floral kingdoms. The wild life follows suite. Ramblers might spot antelopes and zebras, ostriches, 250 species of birds and Chacma baboons who have bred here for a million years. Out at sea, Southern Right whales, dolphins and seals frolic in the waves. Whatever the season, the weather may well take a turn for the worse when you approach the Cape of Storms, so called by the Portuguese explorer Dias

who discovered it in 1488. Later Vasco de Gama renamed it the Cape of Good Hope, honouring the new passage to the East and its lucrative trading route. Africa’s most south-westerly point was long thought to be the meeting place of the Indian and Atlantic oceans, but this is in fact found 150 km or so to the east, depending on prevailing winds. Standing on the legendary Cape of Good Hope is awesome but even more spectacular is its neighbour, Cape Point, on the south-eastern tip of the peninsula. Come gale force winds or driving rain, redwing starlings twitter along the path all the way to the cliff top. Whether you walk up to the lighthouse or take the funicular, Cape Point truly rises like the end of the world, often drifting in low cloud and mist, parting now and then to reveal the last sliver of land edged with vertiginous cliffs. There is nothing ahead of you but vast churning waters melting into an ever changing sky. After such untamed wilderness, the east coast greets you like a breath of fresh air with warm sheltered waters, sweeping sands and quiet villages with colourful harbours and cobbled streets. There’s Cork Bay, all ceramics and fishing boats, Fish Hoek, framed by mountains or Simon’s Town remembering its illustrious visitors, Nelson and Kipling. Just minutes away, a colony of jackass penguins live on Boulders beach, digging their nests in the sand, basking on the rocks, wobbling in and out of the water, untroubled by noisy Egyptian geese and cormorants. Fluffy babies peep out of the holes, the most endearing residents on the tip of Africa.

Bedroom 4 is also located on the ground floor along with a bathroom/WC. First floor has three further bedrooms inc a master bedroom with large ensuite bathroom/WC. There is also an ensuite shower room/WC to the second bedroom. Externally the gated driveway sweeps around to the detached double garage at one side and there is also a further garage sized brick outbuilding. The rear garden is fabulous for a family with extensive lawned areas, patios for al fresco dining, a pond and mature trees and offers rare space and seclusion for such a conveniently located family home.

The property has been owned by the same family since it was built for them in 1954 and stands in wonderful gardens extending to 3/4 acre. Entered via a gravel driveway which sweeps around the side of the property the ground floor comprises of a large entrance hall, central dining room, double aspect lounge, family room, double aspect kitchen/breakfast room, a utility room and cloakroom/WC. Value

Car buyers are used to driving their new purchase off the forecourt and it instantly plummeting in value. It’s a fact of motoring life. Or is it?

W

hat if we told you there are some cars out there that are actually rising in value? And we’re not just talking about automotive exotica either. We spoke to experts from trade price bible CAP as well as leading auction house BCA to uncover the cars that are turning residual values on their heads. ‘There are some classic and sports cars that will keep going up in value,’ one expert told us. ‘Others will simply hold firm. But it’s all dependent on how much you use them and their condition.’ So here are our depreciation-busting top picks.

Jeep Wrangler

This one surprised us too. CAP has found that the Hard Top 4.0 Sahara two-door model with an automatic gearbox has risen £475 in the last 12 months to a trade price of £5,450. CAP says even at this price it’s considered to be a cheap, heavy-duty vehicle – but only for those that can afford to run it.

MINI BCA says despite the volumes currently being 34 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

sold, the Mini is a future classic in waiting. The auction house told us that One models are selling well for around £3,500 to £4,000 even with as many as 100,000 miles on the clock. But prices for well looked after Countryman, Convertible and Clubman models are the firmest.

Ford GT London-based dealer Clive Sutton specialises in selling the most exclusive supercars. He often sees cars rise in value, but if he was spending his money it would be the Ford GT he’d shell

Aston Martin DB7

Audi R8

It’s the V8-engined sports car from Audi that’s popular with buyers, reports CAP. Our experts said it had a slow start in the used market, but in the last 12 months a 2007 model with 20,000 miles has risen £1,900 in the trade to £53,100. ‘It’s increasing in popularity,’ said CAP’s man in the know.

This is a good sign that the recession is easing. Prices for the Volante Convertible version of the stunning Aston Martin DB7 have risen £1,300 in the trade during the last year, according to CAP. An 04-reg, 50,000 miler currently costs £31,400. ‘Today’s buyers appear less concerned about running costs than they were 12 months ago,’ said CAP. Plant of the month

Astilbe

Astilbes don’t have a common name and are generally known by their Latin label, although some species are called False Goat’s Beard. These hardy perennials are widely cultivated for their attractive fern-like foliage and spectacular feathery cone-shaped clouds of flowers. They are very popular because they produce their abundant blooms when planted in full shade and damp, or even water-logged earth. Although they respond best to a rich soil, as do most plants, Astilbes also grow well in difficult to work clay soils. Virtually pest and disease free, these plants are very easy to grow. They are a beautiful plant to use as a feature beside a pond. While they prefer shade or partial shade, they can also cope with full sun as long as they are given plenty of water. Their flowers bloom for a long time and come in shades of red, pink and white. They don’t even need to be deadheaded as the flowers still look attractive when dried on the plant. Cut stems back in spring and divide clumps every four to five years. Astilbes are a must-have plant for every garden in a spot that doesn’t support anything else. They brighten up the shade in outstanding fashion.

Gardening June

Hanging

Baskets T

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon may be the famous ones, but why not create a superbly colourful hanging basket of your own? Garden centres and nurseries are crammed full of summer bedding plants at this time of year and there are colours to suit every taste. If aerial gardening is not for you, then the same type of plants can be used to produce a superb container for your terrace, patio or backyard.

he great thing about summer bedding containers is that you can do just about whatever you want in the way of planting ...and get away with it. So now that the frosts are over in most areas, why not start planting? All you need is readily available from your local garden centre: a good-sized basket - choose a 12” basket as it’s easier to keep moist than smaller ones, a hanging-basket liner (make sure it is the same diameter as the basket you’ve chosen), or a good-sized pot or planter with plenty of drainage holes. A good quality multi-purpose compost is essential for excellent results. What you choose is up to you, but the range is vast - Nemesia, Surfinia Petunias, Upright Petunias, Cineraria ‘Silverdust’, purple-bronze leafed Thalia Fuchsias or their more traditional cousins, Pelargoniums, Lobelia ...the list is endless. Think carefully about colours and textures. Decide whether you’re going for subtle or brash and bold, or if you would like to co-ordinate the flowers with other garden 38 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

features. If you are planting a basket, place it in a large flowerpot as this stops the round-bottomed basket from moving and makes it much easier to plant. Place the liner in the basket, adjusting it to fit the basket and trimming off any excess. Next add handfuls of compost up until the point where you want to plant around the sides of the basket. Planting slits are included in some liners. If you are using a pot, place a few inches of broken flower pots or large stones in the base and top up with compost to within a few inches of the pot rim. Carefully remove the plants you need from their containers, easing the root balls out gently but firmly. An upright plant such as a Fuchsia or Pelargonium is a perfect choice for the centre of the basket or container as it helps to give your planting height and structure. For hanging baskets carefully ease the root ball of each through the planting slit and nestle the root ball in to the compost. It is easier posting the roots through and you’re less likely to do any long term damage.

Any container looks better if there are plants cascading over the sides, so choose trailing plants and put these in around the edge. Space the trailing plants evenly around the sides of the basket. Drizzle compost around and between the root balls of all the plants, making sure that each one has new and fresh compost to grow in to. Use your fingers to firm the compost and make sure that there are no gaps. It is best to use a combination of cascading plants and some upright ones around the outer edges of a basket. This will ensure a really well filled and colourful display and should help to hide the basket framework too. Once the planting is complete, water the container thoroughly using a watering can with the rose attached. It is best not to hang a basket up or stand a pot in its final position until it has had a few days ‘rest’ sitting in a cool spot out of too much hot, direct sunshine. This little rest period allows the plants to settle in to their new home and perform better later on.

June 2011 • issue 69 Tips for Keeping your Summer Planter or Basket Looking Great

HOMES & GARDENS

Garden Design and Construction By Richard Keast HNC

Water regularly, never letting the compost dry out completely. Use a watering can with rose attached, or a gentle spray nozzle on the end of a hose to minimise the risk of disturbing the compost or the plants. If the container does become too dry it may be difficult to re-wet the compost. If so, carefully sit it in a bowl of water for about an hour, allowing it to soak up the water it needs from the base and sides.

Regularly remove faded flowers, before they have a chance to set seed. This should help to encourage the plants to continue producing more flowers. Pinching them off by hand works well for most plants but if the stems are a bit tough, use secateurs or sharp scissors. Check regularly for any pests such as greenfly and treat the problem promptly. When plants are as tightly crammed together as they are in a flourishing basket or patio pot, problems soon build up and spread if you’re not quick off the mark. Feed every couple of weeks with a high-potash liquid fertiliser such as a tomato feed, as this will help to encourage more flowers to develop. If you position a planter full of summer bedding on the paving beneath a hanging basket, then any excess water or feed from the basket won’t be wasted. Something Old Something New Unexpected and individual, unique and environmentally friendly, well-made and timelessly appealing – how does this sound?

W

hether we’re talking vintage, retro, antique or, erm, just plain old, there are heaps of good reasons why adding a well-chosen selection of ‘mature’ furnishings to any room scheme can be enormously successful. The quality of old pine is vastly superior to that of new pine and old mirrors are much more flattering. What’s more, including even just one antique piece in an otherwise-modern room will add texture and subtle individuality. But just how do you combine old with new, contemporary with classic? Especially when the aim is to be both good-looking and practical, with a look that won’t go out of fashion in the next five minutes. As with all interior design schemes, it’s best to start by assessing your room. Measure it and draw a plan, marking in such key elements as windows,

Fresh, modern colours and a vintage vibe. Victoriana bedstead, £299 and Crochet rug, £250; Marks & Spencer (0845 302 1234; www.marksandspencer.com)

doors, built-in cupboards, plus sockets and so on. If the structure is fine, consider the room’s size and shape, and whether its architectural style will affect the way in which you decorate. Work out where furniture will go, and whether you have too much or too little of it. Now you have a good idea of what type of things you’ll need to look out for – whether you’re planning a trip to the high street, a charity shop, car boot sale or auction house. The next important principle is to concentrate on timeless designs. If it’s well designed, whatever era it dates from, it will work with other pieces. Another good rule is to keep floors, walls and woodwork neutral. They won’t date and, more importantly, won’t clash with your one-off furnishings. On a similar note, avoid having more than one, or perhaps two, ‘statement’ pieces in a room. When you have chosen a piece that you really love, you can build a scheme around it. Be careful of too much contrived matching and the room will look forced; too many contrasting elements and it will lack coherence. It all comes down to a combination of instinct and trial and error – just keep on trying until everything feels right.

Adding an old piece into a new scheme can introduce gorgeous colour and texture. The Ostrich wallpaper costs £72 per roll, from Garendenny Lane Interiors (00 353 86 1051007; www. garrendennylane.com)

Think Fireplace... think Focus Fireplaces colour. Bingo! An appealing room appears as if by magic. And of course, the easiest and cheapest transformation of all is to repaint. Tables, cabinets and sideboards, and in particular wooden chairs and stools, can all be rescued, restored and transformed quite easily. A selection of cheap wooden chairs, for example, will look fabulous painted the same matt off-white, no matter how disparate their style – a superbly simple way to mix old and new.

Changing knobs and handles can also make a dramatic difference, giving a vintage feel to a cheap, modern piece, or adding a touch of class to something frumpy and old-fashioned. If you’re feeling bold, you can even add or remove mouldings or replace solid doors with glazing. The final guideline is perhaps the most important of all: don’t forget function. Old or new, every piece you choose should do its job brilliantly. Mend that sticking drawer or wobbly chair and then you can be as bold and imaginative as you dare, putting together rooms that are as enjoyable to live in as they are to look at. COMMUNITY

Get Composting I

t’s that time of year again when, no doubt, you have bought compost to prepare your garden for summer. This year why not think ahead to next and make your own. Composting doesn’t take up a lot of time or space and can help you save money. York and North Yorkshire Waste Partnership are subsidising compost bins and with prices starting at £10 there is no better time to get composting. As well as being free, homemade compost is excellent at making your plants grow. It helps soil retain moisture and improves the structure of clay soil, all good news for plants. Home compost makes healthy soil and healthy soil means healthy plants. Composting your garden and kitchen waste at home is really easy to do and York Rotters are on hand to help people get composting. York Rotters Project Officer, Catherine Bamford stated ‘people often think that composting is difficult but provided you follow a few simple tips then it couldn’t be easier’. Catherine’s top composting tips are:

• •

Get yourself a compost bin or get handy and make your own. Cheap compost bins are available from www.getcomposting. com or by calling 0844 571 4444 quoting reference YNY01L. Home made compost bins can be made out of old dustbins, wooden pallets, even old large laundry baskets. Contact York Rotters for detailed instructions. Ideally a compost bin should be placed on soil – it’s easier for the worms to get in. Don’t worry if it has to go on concrete, compost will still be produced. Worms and the other micro-organisms in your bin like the warmth so a sunny position is ideal. Compost will still be produced if your bin is in the shade, it might just take a bit longer. Place twiggy garden waste or crumpled up cardboard in the bottom of the bin. This provides structure to your bin, helping air to circulate. Make sure you give your compost bin a

varied diet. You need an equal amount of brown stuff to green stuff but don’t worry too much about getting it exact.

• • •

Browns include cardboard, shredded or crumpled paper, eggshells, rubber, natural fabrics such as cotton, wool and silk, wine corks, sellotape and paper based gift-wrap. Greens include fruit and vegetable peelings and green garden waste. Cooked food waste should not be placed in a ‘normal’ compost bin but can be composted in special compost bins such as a Green Johanna, Wormeries or by using the Bokashi System. Contact York Rotters for more information. Have patience – it can take anything from 6 months to 18 months to get compost

So why not start now and get yourself some lovely free compost and save your money for some nice plants instead of compost!

For more information on composting contact York Rotters on 01904 412861 or email rotters@ stnicksfields.org.uk

Ryedale Folk Museum goes to War BLITZ spirit at the ready – an invasion is due to take place in Ryedale. The past will come to life at Ryedale Folk Museum’s increasingly popular World War Two weekend on Saturday June 4 and Sunday June 5, with an army of re-enactors recreating the experiences of the armed forces, the home guard and families in the 1940s. There will be weaponry displays, soldiers marching in full authentic uniform, 1940s vehicles and Land Army girls demonstrating their work. You can eat at traditional Second World War-style cafes and soup kitchens and even handle the kind of gun used at the time. A special highlight will be a 1940s dance from 7pm to 10pm on Saturday night. 1940s dress is ‘encouraged’, but not obligatory, and a good number of re-enactors will be on hand to make it a traditional period knees-up. 1940s singer Marina Mae will provide the music and tea and cakes will be served in old-fashioned china. Tickets are just £5 – call the museum for more details.

June events at Ryedale Folk Museum Saturday May 28 to Friday June 3 – Half-term cooking week. Learn to cook just like your granny did on the traditional ranges in the museum’s cottages. There will be demonstrations of (and the chance to try) scones, patties and biscuits, which youngsters can decorate themselves. Friday June 3 – the French choir Melodie en Retz will be giving informal performances on site throughout the day. The continental theme continues into next month on Bastille Day (July 14) with a French barn dance and picnic. Sunday June 12 – a stream of beautiful classic cars will roar into the site with the MG Classic Car Rally. It’s a great day out – all the family are welcome. 52 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

A hidden gem on your doorstep Experience traditional ways of life and feel close to the people of the past 400 years. Ryedale Folk Museum has a long trail of fascinating artefacts and buildings spread over its five-acre site. As petrol prices climb, it makes sense to look closer to home for your family days out – and at just an hour’s drive from York, the museum is an easy and cost-effective day out. There’s a mind-boggling array of ways to see, hear, touch and even taste the past, from fully fitted-out thatched cottages and traditional shops to beekeeping, art exhibitions, cookery demonstrations, a model village complete with a duck pond and vintage tractors – plus a witch’s hovel where only the brave dare venture. There’s something for all the family – children can learn about the lives of the Victorians, Tudors and technology through the ages. Youngsters particularly enjoy the discovery trails and the interactive demonstrations of traditional crafts such as rope-making, rag rugging and print making, or if they’re simply into racing around, there’s plenty of room for that.

Extra information There are loads of activities happening on site, especially through school holidays and special events throughout the year. See www.ryedalefolkmuseum. co.uk for details. Or call 01751 info@ryedalefolkmuseum.co.uk

Sunshine, lush grass and sore feet How to help horses and ponies have a healthy summer The recent warm weather has been most welcome after a long dark winter and it is lovely seeing animals out grazing in lush fields. However, as the weather warms up and the grass starts to grow we do see a large increase in cases of laminitis, colic and sweet itch. Laminitis can be seen in any equine but most commonly occurs in ponies, particularly native breeds which have adapted to live on quite poor terrain. There are obviously other causes of laminitis (breaking into feed bins; traumatic causes; linked to other diseases) but cases linked to flush grass are most common. If your pony has had laminitis previously it will always need to be managed to reduce the risk of recurrence. Other risk factors include being overweight, increased time grazing or area of turn out, access to new areas and hard ground. To try and prevent laminitis, consider limiting grazing time or area of grazing, use fields with poor grass growth or that have been grazed off by other animals and be vigilant for any signs of being foot sore or reluctant to move around. Affected animals will need veterinary treatment 54 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

as this is a painful condition, moving them into a stable with the floor covered with a deep layer of soft bedding is always beneficial at the outset. We would recommend regular farriery for prone animals to keep feet (especially toes) nicely trimmed and examination of the hoof wall/white line can sometimes help pick up warning signs. Do consider whether these animals need feed on top of grazing and get advice on what to feed, soaking hay does help release sugars and decrease its energy content. We’ve seen an increase in cases of colic in recent weeks, usually the spasmodic or gassy type of colics where you might hear lots of belly noise and see droppings, but nevertheless painful animals. Signs to look for would be rolling, kicking or sometimes they are just quiet or off food. In many cases we can link this to a flush of grass at this time of year but tapeworm can also be a cause of colic so check your worming strategy. Warm still weather (the sort where you fancy having a barbecue) is favoured by midges which are most abundant at dawn and dusk (when you are just tucking into your burger and find you need to take shelter!). Midges

and other small biting flies are attracted to horses and ponies and will cause signs of sweet itch in sensitised individuals, this is a form of allergy and will cause the animals to rub along their manes, backs, tails and sometimes become very distressed or irritated by insects hovering around their faces and ears. Housing prone individuals at dawn and dusk helps, as can fly sheets (the ones that completely cover their bellies and ideally ears and faces) and long acting insecticides all help prevent symptoms. Do telephone us for advice on products, being itchy is very unpleasant and does need treating. Enjoy the sunshine! Lucy Nowell, Station House Vets

York CP is seeking a spacious home for one chunky feline

A

s a centre we usually reserve our advertising for our very shy or nervous cats, or maybe even cats with health problems. This is because we usually struggle to find these cats a home and we feel the advertising certainly benefits them. This month, however, our feline in the spotlight isn’t shy, nervous or poorly – she’s just a little curvy! Claire is a gorgeous ginger lady with lots of personality, and a little bit too much extra weight! Claire first found herself at the centre as a kitten and many staff have pictures of a tiny eight-week old ball of ginger – a far cry from how she looks now! Claire returned to us through no fault of her own, a few kilos heavier than when we last saw her. She loves nothing more than rolling around in bed underneath her blanket, enjoying a good fuss and she is finding herself a frim favourite with staff – so why does she linger? For some reason people seem put off by a chunky cat, especially if they are on a special calorie controlled diet. She is finding herself over-looked in favour of skinnier models, someone needs to give this plus-sized girl a break. Her diet may only be a temporary measure until she is able to have outdoor space and exercise, but don’t let that put you off. The cost is not much different from an average cat’s and you have the added bonus of taking lovely Claire home! So if anyone feels up to the not so big challenge of giving our lovely Claire bear a home, please get in touch on 01904 760356.

YORK

A Special Father’s Day the support of the local YMCA and churches, and on the appointed Sunday – which, rather neatly for us in 2011, happened to be 19 June – YMCA members all went to church wearing roses in their lapels to honour their dads. Spokane’s church service attracted much wider attention than Fairmont’s and became an annual event. President Wilson was a speaker at the 1916 event, and eight years later President Coolidge backed one of several failed bids in Congress to recognise it as a national holiday – an ambition finally realised by President Nixon only in 1972.

T

here is a very good reason why my family should buy me lots of presents this Father’s Day, which falls on 19 June.

They, and all other families for that matter, should be queuing up at the nation’s department stores to spend, spend, spend on bottles of scotch, pipes, slippers, motoring sundries and all similar items beloved of dads in order to save the nation. At this point I can quite clearly hear the cynics saying that’s all that Father’s Day is about – envious dads trying to even the score with mums, who are pampered, showered with gifts and generally spoilt rotten on Mother’s Day. I thought so myself until recently, but the truth is slightly different.

So last year was the centenary of the first Father’s Day. This was celebrated by the ringing of church bells and processions of grateful children bearing bottles of scotch. Well, it should have been, but it wasn’t. The reason is that this year, the day falls on Trinity Sunday in the Christian calendar and it was felt that this was a more appropriate date for celebrations. What would really please me now would be for someone to buy me a bottle of scotch… By Ted Bruning

DUENDE SAXOPHONE QUARTET

For, surprisingly, Father’s Day was started by mums. They were American mums and they didn’t have a consumer-led economic boost in mind. It was all far, far more serious than that. The first Father’s Day was held in Fairmont, West Virginia, on 5 July 1908, as a memorial service for more than 200 men recently killed in the Monongah Mining Disaster, leaving 1,000 fatherless children. It was a largely local affair, although in what seems to have been a case of simultaneous invention, the town of Spokane, Washington, held another Father’s Day service two years later. The idea belonged to Sonora Smart Dodd whose father William, a Civil War veteran, had raised six children on his own after his wife died in childbirth. This was at a time when motherhood was becoming increasingly sentimentalised and Mothering Sunday was being more widely celebrated. Dodd felt that men deserved an equal break (hurrah!).
