hizome: an anti-Oedipus manifesto is a proposal for a habitat that describes the aspiration to instill awareness and consciousness of absolute reality between man and nature, facilitated by architecture. The name in its essence depicts the nature of natural growth perpendicular to gravity while shooting roots from its nodes. Set along Klang River within ever challenging albeit still young urban city of Kuala Lumpur, it aspires to become a platform of pivotal paradigm shift to challenge interdependency of social domains; economics, politics, ecology, culture, and history.

KU A L A L U M P U R Literally means “muddy estuary, Kuala Lumpur has had significant relationships and connection with the river as a valuable resource to the urbanization of Kuala Lumpur; unfortunately neglected presently turning it into a mere monsoon drain. Series of significant flooding events occurred as the result to this attitude, even more diminishing the association between the city and the river. The river; what was then an important reference of the city, now becomes a history of less value.

In principal, the project addresses three problems: it changes, revitalizes and prepares an ecologically apt environment for the propagation of the city, to cultivate human resources and sustainable materials for future building construction, and to integrate interdependency between man and nature. The project consists of four (4) types of facilities; Facility I is to facilitate the demolishing of the concrete surfaces of the river bed, retaining and utilising the river current as convertible hydroelectric facility, and houses bamboo planting machinery; Facility II is where to process (i.e. harvest, cut, cure, and dry) and prepare bamboo as main building material as well as waste incineration facility; Facility III serves as a linking bridge between the river banks and essentially functions as an institute for archive and community centre. The facility contains temporary and permanent structures for research, storage, preservation and exhibition of each process of regeneration of the linear scraper; Facility IV is the habitat. The final result is predicted to be complex chain of living units that stretches along 10.7km of the river-spine in stages and later will be further extended to slowly deurbanising the city and creating self-sufficient society.
