Hanker Magazine is an independent magazine, based in Australia, on the hunt for creatives worldwide. Each season the plan is to release an issue with awesome content from all over the world. From artists (any medium), short story writers, poets, designers & illustrators to photographers, models, music artist/producers and clothing/fashion brands.

The word ‘Hanker’ is defined as a feeling of strong desire to do something. This word sums up what Hanker Magazine is about. As the founder of this magazine I always have a strong desire to create something artistic, and I think that a lot of the readers/viewers will be able to relate to this in some way. It also takes inspiration from Robert Zemecki’s film featuring Tom Hanks and his mesmerising role as ‘Forrest Gump’. It was the life lessons in the movie that got ‘Hanker Magazine’ going.

Hanker Magazine plans to be filled with diverse works and interviews to help inspire others to be creative and express themselves.

Welcome, To the first issue of Hanker Magazine.

First of all, thank you to everyone that has contributed to the creation of the first issue. Also thank you to everybody reading and viewing this magazine.

I hope you enjoy the contents within the magazine and I encourage you to go and check out everybody that is featured.

This issue is simply an establishing issue so no overall theme has been incorporated with the works featured.

Off topic a little but I guess I should introduce myself...

My name is Dillon McIntosh. I am 18 and a Graphic Design student from Australia. I decided to create Hanker Magazine as a side project to improve my magazine layout skills as I am possibly going to look for a career along that path. I am an artist, designer and also photographer. My creative side is expressed more through my photography than my drawing and design works as I barely draw these days (photography has kind of taken over) and when I design it’s usually things like logos and posters for clients, it’s rarely ever design art.

As you will see in this issue I have include a few of my recent photographs just to show my ‘style’ of work. This won’t be a regular part of the magazine, I just wanted to show some of my work.

I hope you like my work as it’s quite different from the photographers featured in this issue as I don’t use people in my photography. It’s more landscape, nature and environment themed.

My photographs are also highly manipulated and some may look at them as not being true to photography but I feel the best way to describe my works is simply, they are a post-modern approach to traditional photography, if that makes sense.

With the highly technical and digital world we live in I think that it works with my subject matter with a bit of contrast. To put it as bland as possible I take a half reasonable image of something and make it look better with editing.

Anyway enough about me and more about the long awaited Issue #1.

This issue features; 3 great female photographers; Gina Vasquez, Meg Hartley and Kiara Rose, an amazing Sydney artist, Maddy Holmes, some great up-and-coming music producers; WEKEED from Paris and 16 y.o JaysWay from Sydney, and last but not least I have a chat with the European clothing brand Mr.GuGu & Miss Go. Again I hope you enjoy the magazine and tell your friends.

So Gina tell us a little bit about yourself.

How old are you and where are you from?

GINA:

I ’m nine te en ye ars ol d, an d I am f rom Ne w York C ity.

How old were you when you first started taking photos in an artistic way?

GINA:

I was seventeen when I first picked up a DSLR and attempted artistic photography.

After seeing some fine art and conceptual photography online, I knew this was something that I had to try.

HANKER MAGAZINE:

Was there any particular photographers that influenced you to try fine art and conceptual photography, if so, are they still the photographers that you’re influenced by today?

GINA:

Yes! It was something that I had wanted to try, and when I joined Flickr, I came across work by Karrah Kobus, Brooke Shaden, Alex Stoddard, and Sarah Ann Loreth. They definitely influenced me to pursue fine art and conceptual photography, and to really channel emotion into concepts. They still are my favourite photographers today, and continue to inspire me!

HANKER MAGAZINE:

So what’s the next step? Do you want photography to become a career for you or is it just going to be a hobby?

GINA:

A career! I can think of nothing better than photographing for a living.

HANKER MAGAZINE:

In one sentence describe your style, genre of photography.

GINA:

It’s difficult for me to put my style into words, but the best way to describe it as a whole would be ‘personal’.

I like to believe in fantasy lands and worlds and drift away with my imagination, pretending I’m being educated at Hogwarts or walking into wardrobes to find myself in beautiful landscapes.

To me, this magic can be channeled into taking photographs, because when I’m behind a camera, I feel a little bit invisible.

I feel like nobody can stop me because my camera, my life is literally right in front of my eyes, allowing me to see the world in so many different levels, I am flooded with inspiration that I could only get from drifting away with my imagination otherwise.

I’m 16 years old and I live in Sydney, Australia.

How much does sites like Flickr and Facebook mean to you and your photography skills?

They do play a big role in the public display of my work, thus constructive criticism and obvious improvements. But my Who are your greatest photography is for me, so I ensure inspirations?

I am always creating to impress I would have to say, Sarah Ann myself, and no one else. These Loreth is my biggest inspiration in social networking sites have regards to photography, as well as connected me to really talented and Brooke Shaden. I really just love successful people who have taught when people live their dream, and me many skills, that I wouldn’t will do anything to make it happen. know otherwise.

Where do you see your photography in 5 years? What’s the future for your photography?

I honestly don’t know, I hope I’m doing great things, like running workshops, travelling and photographing new faces and people, running my business. Just doing what I adore and letting the rest follow.

In one sentence, how would your describe your style of photography?

My work demonstrates a variety of emotion, executing unique concepts with beautiful colours and compositions, aiming to represent heartache, sadness and melancholy in a universal way, connecting with the viewer and capturing them emotionally as well as visually.

When did you get into art?

For as long I can remember! Since I was able to pick up a crayon at 18 months old, I’ve always love drawing and scribbling.

Though at around fifteen I decided that I wanted to pursue art seriously.

Who and what inspires your work?

Everything anyone! I often find inspiration in strange places, however I mostly draw figures, so people in general inspire me a lot. I find human psychology fascinating so that definitely inspires my work.

Also other artists like Mark Ryden, Del Kathryn Barton and Egon Shiele.

Do your works have stories behind them?

Not so much stories as feeling and moods. The works I create are impacted greatly by the mood or state of mind I’m in at the time and the stories kind of unfold from there.

If you had to choose between watercolour, pencil, or pen what would you pick?

Oh my! That’s an almost impossible decision! I adore all three materials

and use them in combination to create most of my works! But, I think I would have to choose watercolour because of it’s diversity and colours.

Is art and drawing just a hobby for you or do you wish to create a career from it?

This is my current dilemma! I was at art school last year but it didn’t suit me at all. Now I’m studying psychology at university and although I love it, the workload means I have hardly anytime to create which is bothering me a lot!

I want to pursue art as a career, but right now I only have time to do art on the side. So I really need to rethink my current situation - either that or stay awake indefinitely so I can fit everything in!

In one sentence describe your

style of art…

Hmm. My artwork is a compilation of thoughts and feelings evxpressed with an often whimsical morbidity.

A few years ago, French couple, Anne-Cath and Romain spontaneously came together to form the name WEKEED. “WEKEED is a wild union of a girl, Anne-Cath, and a boy, Romain.”

The duo from Paris write and record their own upbeat and punchy tunes. They create a sense of fun and joy that just makes you want to dance. You can feel the connection between the two with every tune they produce.

I spoke with them to find out where it all began and get the background story.

“It all happened very organically since we met. It started out with our friendship, a deep complicity and then we began to play little demo’s to each other before actually starting to work together on one of them”.

“WEKEED’s music has been like a soundtrack of our relationship ever since.”

I first heard of WEKEED with their track ‘Wild Child’

which features Anne-Cath’s harmonic vocals balanced with Romain’s producing.

Looking at the progress WEKEED is making I asked, “What is WEKEED’s greatest achievement so far?”

I got the humble response, “Honestly we feel it’s abit early to talk in terms of greatest achievement, even if were pretty happy about everything that has happened so far”.

They then went on to mention some new songs they’re planning to release, “We’re really excited about how our songwriting abilities have evolved as a duo, the best is still to come” With them confirming new songs are on the way I asked, “When should we expect them to be released?”

With a lot of excitement they responded, “Real soon. We definitely want to release several new songs before

the summer (Winter in Southern Hemisphere). We started playing out recently so we’ve been working a lot on our live set as well - which is a great way to test and fine-tune our new tracks.”

As a curious fan I tried to dig a little deeper and find out a bit more about the new tracks, “Should we expect these new songs to be similar to the songs out now or will there be elements of something new and/or experimental?”

WEKEED’s response was, “Actually we’ve been experimenting from the start.

Ever since we started the project we’ve been refining our sound, vision and songwriting skills, and this whole process led us to these new songs. You can definitely expect surprising and unexpected elements, while still recognizing our wild touch”.

It’s going to be an exciting time for WEKEED and their fans over the Summer (or Winter in Southern Hemisphere) and in WEKEED’s words, “Can’t wait to release new material really’ Thank You WEKEED and Good Luck with everything.

So tell us a little bit about yourself; how old are you and where are you from?

I’m 16 years old and I’m from Sydney, Australia. I play the drums and the guitar, and I make electronic music, too.

My aim is to revive the story telling in electronic music. I believe in short collections of songs that can tell a story, with artwork that can aid in the imaginative world that the listener can create while listening to my music. I try to make my music spark something in the mind of the listeners, and take them just far enough so that they can create the rest of the story themselves.

My initial theme came about from a short story I started writing, and it soon bled into the music that I was making, and then I started to experiment with drawing some of the scenes and the characters involved in the story. It’s completely open-ended at the moment, so I can keep adding details and elements of the story as I come up with them.

I hope to be known for the music that I make, not just for the music, but for the entire aura surrounding it. I feel like over the next couple of years my musical project will grow into something remarkable.

Who are your biggest influences in the music industry at the moment?

At the moment, I’m most influenced by producers like Sorrow, Flying Lotus, Flume, Cosmo’s Midnight, Tennyson, Submerse, Ta-Ku, ViLLAGE, and M83 mostly.

I’ve been trying to find the right balance between energetic beats and relaxed beats, and trying to mix together future sounds and styles like neurofunk and dubstep with old school styles such as 80s synth-pop. I’m trying to give my music as much emotional depth as I can without turning anything into

a mid-life crisis, or raping the reverb plugin too much (I already do ;D).

I can see alot thought goes into a track but what goes into a track physically? How do you produce a track and what software is involved?

I use a windows-based laptop and a pair of headphones to produce, mix and master my music. I use Fruity Loops 10 for 95% of my production, with Ableton Live making up the other 5%. I use a Behringer C-1 microphone for recording vocals and instruments such as guitar and drums, which I then process using FL Studio.

When you first decided that you wanted to do this, what was that moment like and what actions did you take/have you taken to get to where you are today?

I was really into music at the time, playing guitar and drums, and I was also writing a lot of music too. A friend of mine introduced me to a Skrillex track and I loved it. I had not much knowledge of electronic music at the time, so it was a weird feeling, but I immediately felt like I wanted to do the exact same thing. I just started producing one day, and I did it every day for about 6 months until I started to become more efficient at it and realised that I should hold back on the amount of half-arsed productions I was spitting out. I was trying my best to sound exactly like skrillex did (which is what a lot of producers have been doing for the last few years) until one day my computer kicked the bucket and I lost everything that I had made up until then. I spent another 6 months solely listening to electronic music, which made me understand it more, and then when I went back to it I began producing under a

different sound and style. I released a 6-track EP called Chili Hat then, I was 14 or 15 I think. I was so glued to the whole 128-bpm dance sound back then, because I just wanted to get people moving to my music. I honed my skills a bit further by doing some bootleg remixes here and there, and eventually began to feel more creative with what I was doing.

It’s just kind of evolved from there, and nowadays I’m influenced by a lot more than just electronic music, and I feel like the kind of music I want to make should be “more than electronic music”. I’ve begun to incorporate my own vocals in a lot of my tracks, and I’ve begun to make use of my skills in guitar and drums too, and I try to stretch the boundaries of what people would typically think of as “dubstep” and even “electronic music”, and I hope that one day my music and my whole creative project in general will have blossomed into something that people can no longer describe. Something that can’t be classified as “music” or “art” or anything anymore, because it’ll be so much more than that.

What’s the plan from where you’re at now?

What’s the next step?

For the near future, I want to continue to hone my skills and build up a secret stash of my best tunes, so that if I ever get signed to a nice record label I can release a full-length LP. I’m currently trying my best to earn a bit of money so I can afford myself some new gear, and I’m trying to develop a killer live set that will get people excited to see me live.

I think for the time-being, I’m more than happy just to lay a little low and keep doing what I’m doing until I’ve finished high school, and I think by then I’ll have a better idea of what I want to do with my life, and I can work with that. I’m hoping that some good people and opportunities arise between now and then, so that I can emerge into the real world with some momentum and continue my passion for writing music.

When and where did Mr.Gugu & Miss Go start?

So, our brand started 2 years ago in our hometown - Bielsko-Biała. It is post industial city connected with manufactury.

One person was created this brand and because of huge work Mr.Gugu & Miss Go was more well - known in Poland, and later people from whole world became our clients. We were published in Vogue, GQ Magazine, and know we can develop our company by creating new brands and making new projects.

So who is Mr.Gugu & Mrs. Go? Are they real people or is it just a name?

Mr.Gugu & Miss Go is some kind of joke which doesn’t have sense :) It can mean that we are brand for woman Miss Go and for man - Mr.Gugu.

For sure, they are not our names :), because we are team - not a couple.

What has been the brands greatest moment or highest achievement?

The greatest moment is connected with prints, we started to prints clothes in May, 2012.

We could make our own designs, print whatever we want.

Who is the artist(s) that creates the works on your garments?

We have 3 designers who are working to new designs.
