project Scope We were tasked to design a kindergarten through fourth grade elemantary school in West Haven , Utah. We will be designing a common classroom plan to be used throughout the entire building as well as the interior for a media center in the heart of the school. The design will be welcoming and verstalie for all students, parents, and staff at West Haven Elementary and include design influence from Utah’s iconic desert rock formations and local plant life.

west haven, utah West Haven is a small town set in between Salt lake City and the Wasatch Mountains in northern Utah. In this city there are around 4,000 people residing there with approximatly 53% being families with 2 or more children and the average income being about $57,000. West Haven is a growing city with much of the city being zoned for commercial development.

research • Children learn better under illumination from skylights or windows, rather than bulbs. • Incorporating plants in the classroom helps improves grades, reduce sick leave, and makes staff and students feel more comfortable. • Classroom furniture should be designed to have the ability to be moved around to adapt to student needs. • Reds, oranges, and yellows on walls and furniture identify zones that encourage communication. • Greens suggest a calm setting.

concept Designed after the red rocks and native sage leaves of the Utah deserts, we wanted to create a feeling of warmth and growth in the West Haven Elementary School. Growth is an important factor in education and we display this using lively greenery and architecture that looks as though it has been formed from the building itself. We use a combination of a soothing sage green mixed with the playful orange tone seen in the archways and canyons of Utah’s state parks.
