Pullman | WELCOME TO PULLMAN

Pullman, the friendliest town in the world!

Located at the junction of three streams (South Fork of the Palouse River, Missouri Flat Creek and Dry Creek) in what is now the downtown area of Pullman (first known as “Three Forks”) has a rich history going back to the 1870’s. First on site was Bolin Farr from Missouri who settled on present day Park Street and later built a house there. Second was Daniel McKenzie who came in 1877 and built a small home approximately on the present-day location of the Manor Lodge on Paradise Street.

In 1881 Farr and McKenzie platted the town site.

The town’s application for a post office called “South Palouse” was rejected by the Post Office Department.

The next application with the town name of Pullman was accepted. One theory is that the adopted name came from George Pullman, the king of the great railroad sleeping car. When informed of the town’s action, the railroad magnate reportedly donated $50 to start a city library.

Soon after, McKenzie invited Mark True to come from Moscow and establish a hotel here. The result was the Palace Hotel located on the southeast corner of Paradise and Kamiaken Streets. The town’s first artesian well was discovered while drilling a well for the hotel. These wells soon attracted newcomers to the area. Railroads came from the west and the north and the town grew and incorporated in 1888.

After Washington gained statehood in 1889, there was fierce competition among the towns east of the Cascades to be the location of the land grant college. The award went to Pullman, the “Artesian City”, and the town was forever changed. The Washington State College was established on the northeast part of Pullman in 1889 opening with 21 students, and the town entered a new era. That small school is now Washington State University with branches in other parts of the state.

Pullman is Business Friendly Nestled in the picturesque southeastern corner of Washington State in a region popularly known as the Palouse, the City of Pullman offers business resources to help enterprising entrepreneurs maneuver through various stages of a business lifecycle. This article briefly describes four local programs worthy of consideration. For more information on any of these programs, the Pullmanbased Small Business Development Center or the Pullman Chamber can recommend the best course of action.

In the Seed Stage, the entrepreneur typically goes through business planning, legal considerations and market research to help turn an idea into a product or service.

In the Startup Phase, the business owner may be balancing various competing priorities to help make the business go.

As the hard work of planning and operating the business starts to pay off, the business owner finds itself in Growth Phase, adding employees, launching new product lines, adding new locations or acquiring another company.

Ultimately, the business owner enters a Transition Phase in which the owner thinks about the end game, including selling the business, transitioning to a successor or winding it down entirely.

Four locally based programs worthy of consideration:

Small Business Development Center , a federally funded program with matching funds from WSU Washington State University serves as an advisor for enterprising entrepreneurs through all stages of a business lifecycle.

Southeast Economic Development offers entrepreneurs, startups and small businesses a suite of consulting, mentoring and educational programs and services designed to jump start and grow local businesses, and connect with federal, state, regional and local resources to promote economic vitality by creating and retaining jobs through business, tourism and community development.

Innovation Corps

(I-Corps), is a 10-week program in the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters to validate the market viability of a business idea. Open to all entrepreneurs through a selection program, this NSF funded program is thriving in its third year at Washington State University.

Business Plan Competition during Spring semester at Washington State University offers university and high school students a chance to compete for thousands of dollars to start their businesses.

Our thriving Running Start program provides high school students the opportunity to complete a tuitionfree two-year college degree while simultaneously finishing high school. Pullman Parks Pullman enjoys four seasons and 18 parks with over 145 acres of land, which provides a wide variety of outdoor activities. Photography on the Palouse The Palouse region offers unparalleled beauty, a unique landscape, rural charm, four distinct season and thousands of acres with outstanding photo opportunities. Keep in mind 98% of these lands in Whitman County are privately owned and landowners are not required to post trespassing signs. Stay on the roads and off property that does not belong to you. Please also be aware of heavy farm equipment on the roads.

Photographers find late spring and early summer to be the opportune time for photographing the green hills and the golden fields of wheat. In May and late June photographers find the less stable weather provides opportunity to capture dramatic lights and skies. It is a bit more of a gamble for photographers on a tight schedule, but the payoff can be beautiful. Winter on the Palouse is often gray, but a clear sunrise over fields freshly dusted with snow can be a real prize to a photographer lucky enough to catch the right moment. This is also the best time for raptor viewing.

Photography Tips from Alison Meyer Time of Year: Velvety green hills appear on the Palouse in

late April and peak near late June, with wildflowers growing mostly on uncultivated areas during May and June. Grass fields are harvested beginning in late June to early July, and harvest of golden crops occurs around late July-early September, depending on the location and weather.

Time of Day:

Generally, photographing the Palouse in the early morning or late afternoon/early evening provides the best light needed for showing off the shapes of hills and textures of fields and barn wood. Low side-lighting at these times creates shadows that make the hills more visible and dramatic. If you don’t have much time to photograph, concentrate your efforts during these time periods.

Encourage Your Creativity: Photograph with your own creative spirit! Popular photographic locations are photographed repeatedly — remember, the Palouse is not just about the hills! Consider farm equipment, waterways, flora, fauna, close-ups, non-cultivated scenes, people and towns.

Change your physical relationship to the landscape to see something new: Crouch low to

the ground, lay on your back or side, walk over a hill, get off the trail, shoot in “lousy” weather or lighting conditions. Try breaking some photographic “rules” by using blur or low light, a cell phone camera, or creative post processing effects. All of these things can result in unique photos.

Lenses: A wide angle lens is helpful for depicting expansive landscapes. Composing your picture with an interesting foreground subject, such as a rock outcrop or flowers, will give perspective to a scene which also contains a more distant landscape. Use a small aperture to bring all parts of the scene into the best focus possible.

Create more abstract landscape images:

by using a long lens to capture a narrow section of the scenery. When photographing from a distance with a long lens, the Palouse hills can appear interestingly compressed and rippled. If the atmosphere isn’t clear, the haze lends a softness to the photo which can be painterly and interesting.

Carry A Tripod: A tripod allows you to use slower shooting speeds without blur resulting from camera movement. This allows you to choose a small aperture (higher f-stop), which provides greater depth of field (the area of the scene that is in focus). You won’t need or want a tripod for every shot, but when you find yourself viewing gorgeous light over a broad landscape, you’ll be glad you have it with you, especially if you want to print very large sharply focused photographs.

Ask Permission: Returning the kindness to landowners

who are welcoming to the cars and photographers stopped on their roadsides and driveways can go a long way toward keeping these locals amenable to future visits. Barns that

appear abandoned, seemingly deserted homesteads, and cultivated fields in Idaho and Washington are not public domain. Get permission to enter agricultural fields and to photograph close to barns and other private property and graciously thank landowners whenever possible.

Palouse Recreation Trails These trails are ideal for walking, running, biking and skating. The Bill Chipman Palouse Trail is seven miles of smooth pathway between Pullman and Moscow and is open dawn to dusk year-round. It connects to Pullman’s seven miles of Riverwalk Trail and Moscow’s Paradise Path between the University of Idaho and downtown Moscow. The Latah Trail connects to Paradise Path and runs between Moscow, ID and Troy, ID.

Trail of the Coeur d’Alene’s This paved bike path follows the Union Pacific Railroad right-of-way starting from Plummer, ID. More than 71 miles of paved path takes you over the Chatcolet Bridge at Heyburn State Park, along the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene and into the chain lakes region, through historic Silver Valley and ends in the high mountain splendor. Fishing at Rock Lake A large, beautiful lake ideal for boating and fishing. This lake is home of the Train Wreck Mystery of 1908-1915.

Several dozen boxcars full of new Model T Fords are reportedly still at the bottom of this lake. Divers have not been able to locate as the exact crash site is unclear, but it is suggested it happened near Johnson beach. A beautiful lake, it is ideal for boating and fishing.

Spring Valley & Moose Creek Reservoirs Favorite fishing holes for residents. These small reservoirs are stocked with trout and bass. Picnic tables and restrooms are available at both locations as well as overnight camping. Spring Valley is just east of Moscow on Hwy 8. Moose Creek is located on Hwy 8 at mile post 38.1.

NORTH Palouse, Garfield, Rosalia, Tekoa Palouse Just 15 minutes north of Pullman lays a thriving art community called Palouse. Known for charming antique and gift shops, small cafes and discoveries, it’s a great stop or destination. Public restrooms are conveniently located downtown. Plan your visit Thursday through Saturday, when most businesses are open. History buffs and those that would like to learn more can visit the Roy M. Chatters Newspaper and Printing Museum, which has the largest archived collection of Whitman County area newspapers and the equipment once used to print them.

The museum also houses a great deal of Palouse’s local history in photos and artifacts. Watch your step but keep your eyes open and look around!

Main Street in Palouse is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Palouse has one of the oldest and most beautiful city parks in the area with picnic structures, playground and outdoor swimming pool. You’ll also find the Palouse RV Park. Garfield Situated in the awe-inspiring scenery of golden wheat fields, Garfield is a refreshing change from the fast-paced hustle and bustle of the modern world. Step back in time at the R.C. McCroskey House, a national historic site. The town has a beautiful park, swimming pool and you can stop for coffee and shopping at the Meet Shop Too! In September and October, it’s U-Pick apple harvest time at Bishop’s Orchard. You can even press your own cider. Just outside of town is the Elberton fishpond, stocked with fish, for kids 14 and under. Find more at garfieldwa.com

Rosalia Steptoe Battlefield marks the location where the last Indian victory over the U.S. Army occurred in May of 1858. This historic battle with 158 mounted troops, facing between 600 and 1,200 warriors, ended with a cease-fire that gave an opportunity for Colonel Steptoe’s escape back to Fort Walla Walla. Check out the Rosalia Museum for exhibits on this, as well as a meteorite that was found near Rosalia. For information on the town, stop at their Visitor’s Center, which is housed in a renovated Texaco Station, originally built in 1923, and which now features an electric vehicle charging station.

Tekoa Halfway between Spokane and Pullman on scenic highway 27, Tekoa is the perfect stop for those with a passion for photography, bicycling, golf, farming, and history. Visit the landmark art deco style Empire Theatre built in 1940. Order a latte at the coffee shop next door and then tour 3 floors of the Tekoa Museum. Stay for a meal at one of their hometown restaurants.

Photographic opportunities surround Tekoa, including the old Milwaukee Railroad Trestle, hang gliders floating off Tekoa Mountain, 1909 Old City Hall building, and nearby Steptoe Butte. WEST Colfax, Almota, Snake River Colfax A community that is alive with small town friendliness and serves as the county seat. Colfax was named in honor of Schuyler Colfax, who was vice president during President U.S. Grant’s first administration (1869-73). James A. Perkins was cofounder and the first permanent resident of Colfax. Shortly after his arrival in 1870, he began building a log cabin in which the first Republican convention in the county was held in 1872. A visit to this charming town might include a stop at a local coffee shop or restaurant, a round of golf at the beautiful 9-hole course situated on the Palouse River, or viewing the latest art exhibit at The Center at Colfax Library.

Snake River & Wawawai Park Located at Boyer Park and Marina 22 miles southwest of Pullman, the Snake River Trail stretches 4.5 miles from the bank of historic Almota Creek, which was a Lewis and Clark Expedition stop, through Boyer Park and eastward to the base of Lower Granite Dam. The trail features accessible and non-motorized access as well as a series of interpretive signs dealing with the Columbia Snake River system, dams, geology and transport of commodities. The park also provides fishing, swimming and a boat ramp. Lower Granite Lock and Dam A great escape to warmer climate, just 27 miles southwest of Pullman along the Snake River. They have a fish viewing room, theater, and interpretive displays. LaCrosse Small Stone Houses were built between 1934 and 1936 by Clint Dobson, a local businessman. SOUTH Colton, Uniontown Colton The Colton story began in 1878 when L.J. Wolford, Roy Woodworth and Dr. Cole, being dissatisfied with the proprietor of Uniontown, decided to find a town of their own. The name came from the first three letters of Dr. Cole’s last name and the last three letters of Mr. Wolford’s son, Clinton.

Visit St. Gall’s Catholic Church built in 1905 which retains the original architecture and stained-glass windows. Schedule some target practice at the Colton Gun Club. Colton is famous for its holiday lights which can be viewed from the comfort of your car anytime in December.

Uniontown Settled by German immigrants from Minnesota in the 1870s’, Uniontown offers a great experience for those who stop. When the Dahmen Barn was donated to the community in 2004, volunteers rolled up their sleeves and donated over 5,000 hours to transform the building into an artisan center. Located behind the famous fence of over 1,000 iron wagon wheels, this fully accessible facility provides studio space for artists and hosts live performances, special artist receptions and offers classes and workshops. Be sure to get up close and personal to Wheeletta Wholesteele, the larger-than-life metal cow sculpture adjacent to the highway. Stop in and see St. Boniface Church, the first consecrated Catholic Church in the state of Washington. It houses the original five altars, statues, stained glass, stenciled décor and oil painted Stations of the Cross. Tours are available. Pick up some coffee and fresh baked goodies at the New Sage Baking Company. A great stop for treasure hunting with half a dozen antique and second-hand shops. Washington State University makes its home in Pullman. This beautiful, world class research institution, and leader in Division-1, Pac-12 Athletics is what leads many Cougar Alumni to “find their way back home.” WSU provides year-round entertainment in the form of athletics, theater, art, and music.

Normally scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month at noon, these catered events are opportunities to network with other business leaders, learn about the Pullman community in general, or learn about current business issues.

Pullman Community Update Members may submit information about their business for inclusion on the chamber pages of the Pullman Community Update. This monthly newsletter is sent to more than 15,000 businesses and residents in Pullman and Albion. Showcase new product lines, business changes, and your upcoming events, as space allows.

Business Card and Literature Display The Chamber of Commerce offers a business card and literature display in our 24-hour accessible foyer. We also offer space inside the office. Hundreds of people visit the office each month providing excellent exposure for your business.

Referrals The Chamber of Commerce proudly serves as the front door to the community. Thousands of requests are made each year for referrals to businesses. Only Chamber members are referred unless there are no Chamber members in the category being requested.

Mailing Labels Members can purchase the entire membership mailing list on printed labels for $25. Non-members can purchase the lists for $50 on labels. Excel file for one-time use is available for $50 to members only.

Bulk Mail Stamp The US Post Office offers reduced prices on presorted bulk mail if certain requirements are met. The Chamber’s bulk mail permit number is available for members to use.

Relocation Packet Inserts Chamber members can supply brochures, fliers, or coupons designed for new residents to the Palouse region for inclusion in relocation packets. This is a free service for Chamber members. Members need to provide 50 inserts at a time to the Chamber office. Information should be no larger than one sheet of 8 1/2� x 11� paper (can be folded).

Seminars and Workshops

Certificates of Origin This official stamp provides proof to businesses and governments that the goods being shipped were produced in the United States. Many international firms request such proof.

Grand Openings and Ribbon Cuttings These events are provided for new members as a welcome to the community and are also available for business members who are expanding or dedicating new facilities.

Small Business Service The Chamber has a large network of business connections. Whether you are looking for sites, developers or counseling, the Chamber can point you in the right direction. We work closely with the Small Business Development Center and the local Economic Development agencies to provide support for our business community.

Membership Decal Studies show that when a consumer knows a small business is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, they are 44% more likely to think favorably of it and 63% more likely to purchase goods or services from the company in the future. Display your decal proudly. The decal is an important way to tell your customers you support the Pullman Chamber of Commerce. Look for this logo when shopping in Pullman.

the board Francis Benjamin Francis came to this region to attend college, met his wife Heidi, and never left. Pullman provides great work opportunities, has a wonderful climate, and is the perfect place to raise a family. He works at Washington State University ‘06 & ’14 designing psychological research experiments, providing technology solutions, and teaching Real Estate.

He owns FAB Consulting a technology solutions consulting company.

Francis served on Pullman’s City Council 2003-2015 and is former president of the Association of Washington Cities. He co-leads the 5-day Be The Entrepreneur Bootcamp. He is active with the National Lentil Festival, the Chamber’s government affairs & economic development committees and in the community: Kiwanis, Boy Scouts, Pullman Community Council on Aging, Palouse Knowledge Corridor, and Pullman 2040.

Jill Bielenberg Jill Bielenberg is a lifelong native of the Palouse with family roots in Genesee, Idaho. She has always had a bilateral focus on professional education and high-volume restaurants. After living in the Seattle area, she returned to the Palouse and assumed the role of the general manager of the famed Breakfast Club in Moscow while obtaining multiple degrees in various fields of education from the University of Idaho. While pursuing her career in Early Childhood Development/Special Education, she also held a role on state/national boards and committees for public policy and curriculum development for early childhood and special education initiatives. Most recently she was the president for Idaho’s Association for the Education of Young Children Board of Directors. In 2012 Jill took on the position of the general manager for Birch & Barley. She has taken great pride in being part of the Pullman community and feels honored to be working amongst such inspiring business men and women Jill looks forward to continuing her efforts to give back and increase our goal of making Pullman a better place to live, work, and do business as a business owner, member of the Pullman Chamber Board of Directors - President (and as the current Legendary Lentil Festival Cook-off Coordinator!).

JoReen Brinkman JoReen currently lives in Pullman with her husband Cameron Brinkman, and their two children. She graduated from Lewiston High School with honors in 1994. She went on to attend Idaho State University and later transferred to the University of Idaho, graduating with a B.S. in Mass Communication and a minor in Art. From 19992006 JoReen owned and operated Lasting Impressions Photography in Moscow. In 2005, she and her husband Cam bought Subway restaurants in Pullman and in Colfax. They have since added locations at the WSU Compton Union Building and in Walmart which also houses Auntie Anne’s Pretzel Perfect. JoReen has been the bookkeeper and office manager for all of these businesses. Other involvements include: United Way Executive Board Secretary, 2011-present; YMCA of the Palouse Board of Trustees, 2013-present; Pullman Chamber of Commerce Cabaret Committee, 2005-present; YMCA Annual Fundraising event, 2013-present; and Association of Washington Business Board Member, 2015.

McKenzie Brumet McKenzie Brumet manages corporate giving and philanthropy for Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories.

Born and raised in eastern Washington, she has been proud to call Pullman home for the past 10 years.

After earning her Bachelor of Science in Communication from Eastern Washington University, McKenzie held a variety of positions before joining SEL in 2008. She has volunteered for numerous local organizations.

Andrew Flabetich - President Andrew Flabetich is a Commercial Insurance Agent at HUB International in Pullman. Andrew (WSU ’12) and his wife Allison (WSU ’13) have called Pullman home since they arrived on the WSU campus as freshman in 2008. Originally from Vancouver and Walla Walla, Andrew and Allison love the small-town lifestyle in Pullman with the social and cultural relevance that the university brings. They’re also excited for their three children to grow up in a great education system, and where WSU is right across town. They love the Cougs, their church, traveling, spending time with family, working on their house, and meeting new friends. You can find Andrew at every Cougar football home game, and Allison at the warm ones. They are active in their church and Andrew currently services on the board at Palouse Care Net. Andrew also coaches middle school football at LMS in Pullman.

Ginger Flynn Ginger Flynn is the Business Development Leader at Dave Christy State Farm. She moved to Pullman January, 2012 to join her longtime high school “sweet heart”, Scott Hodge. Ginger has been active in the community since her arrival; Volunteering at Second Chance Animal Thrift Store, Whitman Senior Living, Bishop Place, and Pullman HS Booster events. She has been a Pullman Kiwanian since arriving in Pullman. She has served on the board the past seven years, and is the current President of the Kiwanis Club of Pullman, the largest service club on the Palouse. Her community service through Kiwanis has allowed her to co-chair the “Stuff the Bus” campaign for the past 3 years, co-captain Kiwanis/WSU football parking, and chair the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast and Music Fest. Ginger is an active participant in the Women’s Leadership Guild, Whitman County Association of Realtors, Whitman County Landlord Tennant Association and Real Life Church. She has volunteered at The National Lentil Festival for many years, including coordinating all volunteers for the 2016 event. Ginger is the 2018 recipient of the Pullman Chamber of Commerce member of the year award.

She enjoys attending Cougar home sporting and entertainment events, the benefits of living in a small town, and walking her French Bullhuahua, “Nahla” in the snow while talking to her 29 year old, sunshine drenched, Sarasota Florida resident Jacob Burgh. Giving back to and growing the community she calls home brings her great satisfaction.

Megan Guido Megan Guido is the Chief Marketing & Community Relations Officer at Pullman Regional Hospital. She received her Bachelor of Science in Journalism from the University of Idaho and her Master’s in Public Administration from Seattle University. Her experience includes more than 20 years in leadership positions in healthcare and at non-profits in marketing, fundraising and community engagement. She currently oversees community relations, marketing, digital and social media at Pullman Regional Hospital, a 5 Star, Women’s Choice®, critical access hospital, located in eastern Washington. In addition, she is a licensed trainer for Color Code® (personality and communications style assessment) and is a certified executive and leadership coach.

Glenn Johnson Former Chamber President Glenn Johnson is in his fifth term as Mayor of Pullman and chair of the Pullman Moscow Regional Airport. He continues as the “Voice of the Cougs” at Washington State University for football and men’s basketball games, now in his 39th year. Glenn was appointed by the Governor as a Trustee with the Community Colleges of Spokane that has a branch on the WSU campus in Pullman. He was named Honorary Alumnus of WSU in 2016, the highest honor a non-graduate of WSU can achieve. Glenn serves on the Board of Directors of the Chamber and is an active volunteer with several Chamber committees: Fourth of July (chair); Government Affairs; and volunteers with Lentil Festival and Cabaret.

Several years ago, he received the first ever Continuous Service Award from the Chamber. He is on the board of directors of United Way, the Community Action Center, the Palouse Free Clinic, the Washington State Association of Broadcasters, and Municipal Research and Service Center based in Seattle.

He is chair of the state’s Transportation Improvement Board and is a trustee and chair of the Employee Benefit Trust that insures city workers in about 245 cities in the state. He is the former president of the Association of Washington Cities, the association that represents all 281 cities in the state and is professor emeritus in the Murrow College at WSU.

Chris Park Chris Park was named Washington State’s Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Relations on August 01, 2018. Park will overseeg communications, marketing, ticketing, creative services and video operations, while also serving as WSU’s liaison with IMG. Prior to coming to WSU, Park spent the previous five years as the senior associate athletic director for external operations and development at UTEP, after joining the Miners in July of 2012 to serve as the Associate Athletic Director for Development. At UTEP, Park oversaw external operations, including ticketing, marketing and video production & graphic design, while serving as the liaison with IMG, UTEP’s multimedia rights holder. He was heavily involved in athletic fundraising and served on the athletics senior staff and as the sport administrator for football and men’s golf. In 2014, Park served as the Co-Chair for the Conference USA Men’s & Women’s Basketball Tournament and in 2015-16 chaired the university and citywide committee tasked with commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the 1966 NCAA Championship. During the spring of 2018, Park was credited for his leadership and assistance in raising over $10 million toward the planned $15 million renovation of the Sun Bowl which started this past summer.

Prior to El Paso, Park spent six years (2006-12) at Texas State University as the assistant athletic director for development. During his time on the senior administrative staff in San Marcos, Texas, Park oversaw the Bobcat

Club and served as a major gift fundraiser. He played a vital role in the school’s transition from Division I FCS to FBS. Park joined the Texas State staff after more than two years at Sam Houston State, where he served as the Bearkats’ first athletic development and marketing coordinator from January 2004 to July 2005 before spending August 2005 through July 2006 as the school’s external operations coordinator.

Prior to Sam Houston State, Park held a pair of positions in the department of athletics at his alma mater, Texas A&M University. While at A&M, Park worked in both the marketing and media relations offices.

At Texas A&M, Park held the position as the 12th Man team rewards program coordinator, where he managed the program’s $100,000 budget, oversaw the program’s marketing efforts, hired and scheduled staff, and developed corporate sponsorships.

Park’s athletic administrative career began in his hometown of Fort Worth, Texas, as a marketing intern at Texas Christian University, where he developed corporate sponsorship proposals, worked with ticketing and executed marketing research for the department.

A 2002 graduate of the Lowry Mays School of Business at Texas A&M, Park also holds a master’s degree from the College of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M, which he completed in 2004.

He is married to the former Anna Johnston and the couple has a son, Matthew.

Jaci Kajfas Alvarez Jaci Kajfas Alvarez leads the sales department at the Marriott Pullman Properties, LLC (Residence Inn and Courtyard). A Washington state native, she was raised in Skagit Valley, then transferred to Seattle University for her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, with a focus in Economics and Philosophy. She has an extensive background in hospitality, management, events, and wine! As a sommelier (wine educator) and artist, Jaci is passionate about service - for the community, hospitality, arts and business. A mother of two (with one now adult child in San Diego, CA!), Jaci relocated to the Palouse seeking the close-knit community life, rather than the hectic city life. Moving with her son from Ballard, she brings a background in community leadership with over fifteen years collective at Arts Ballard, Salmon Bay Schools auction committee, and small arts associations through the Seattle area. Jaci loves the outdoors, spending time with her dogs, gardening, and continuing to diversify her taste in food, wine, and travel. A firm believer that the strength of a community is driven by the participation of all individuals, Jaci is very excited to join the Chamber of Commerce and share her passion for community.

Bob Maxwell Bob Maxwell is the superintendent of the Pullman School District (PSD) and has participated in a number of chamber events since moving to Pullman in 2014. He is a current member of Kiwanis, participates on various boards/committees and enjoys volunteering in the community. Bob received his Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) from WSU in 2011.

In his spare time, Bob can be found in the great outdoors fishing, hunting, hiking or rock hounding. Bob and his wife, Adrienne, love Pullman and the array of outdoor activities, arts, entertainment, and PSD/WSU athletic events. Bob and Adrienne; have two girls Madeline and Kate attending Pullman High School. Being a member of the Chamber and the Chamber Board is an opportunity to help enhance the community. Membership in the chamber and on the Board is a way to give back to the community for its generous support, great work and commitment to our schools.

Theresa Myers Former president Theresa Myers is the co-owner of Myers Auto Rebuild and Towing. She is from Kent and has lived in Pullman for 40 years. Theresa loves the small-town lifestyle in Pullman, and she adds that it is a great place to raise kids, due to the great schools. There is a variety of cultural and sporting events in the region, and she enjoys being so close to outdoor recreation opportunities and likes to watch the seasons change. As a member of the Board of Directors, she finds it meaningful to help build a vital economic base for the citizens of Pullman, and to promote Pullman and the region as a great place to live and do business. Theresa says that it is important to educate people that Pullman has many great businesses and that they don’t need to go out of town to find what they need, as it is offered right here in town.

Alex Pan Alex is the Director of the Community Affairs for the Associated Students of Washington State University.

The Department of Community Affairs works with the City of Pullman to ensure the students of WSU and the community members of Pullman have a mutually beneficial relationship.

Stacy Pearson Ms. Pearson became the University’s Vice President for Finance and Administration in March 2017. Prior to coming to the University, Ms. Pearson was the Chief Financial Officer at Boise State University (“BSU”) and previously served eight years as that university’s associate vice president for finance and administration. She has been director of internal audit services for the Oregon University System and the Idaho State Board of Education. She is an active participant and presenter for regional and national higher education professional organizations including the National Association of College and University Business Officers (“NACUBO”), and she was recently appointed to NACUBO’s Research Universities Council. Ms. Pearson earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Idaho and a master’s of public administration degree from BSU. She is a certified public accountant and serves on several boards, including College Spark Washington, the Downtown Pullman Association, the Pullman Regional Hospital and the Pullman Moscow Regional Airport.

Tony Poston Tony Poston is the owner of College Hill Custom Threads, a custom apparel design company. Originally from Sandpoint, Idaho, Tony graduated from Washington State University in 2007 after earning a degree in Political Science/Pre-Law. During his time as an undergrad, Tony was active in ASWSU, The Inter-fraternity Council and The Student Entertainment Board and fell in love with WSU and the City of Pullman and hoped to return in the future. The opportunity finally presented itself in 2011, when he and two others founded College Hill Custom Threads near campus. Tony believes that the Chamber of Commerce can help show that Pullman is not only a great college town but the perfect place to raise a family and start a business. By helping coordinate fun and exciting events he wants to help bridge the gap between local businesses and WSU students, showing that both can work together to benefit from each other.

Robert Rembert Robert Rembert is a past President of the Board of Directors, as well as a civil litigation attorney and shareholder at Irwin, Myklebust, Savage & Brown, P.S., Pullman’s full-service community law firm. He attended Western Washington University where he obtained his undergraduate degree and met his wife, Jeannine. Rob attended Seattle University School of Law and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1996. He is a member of both the Washington and Idaho Bar Associations, has served as President of the Whitman County Bar Association and is a member of the Lewis & Clark State College Legal Support Programs Advisory Committee.

Active in the Pullman community, Rob has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Pullman Education Foundation, a Commissioner on the Whitman County Elected Officials Salary Commission and was a Trustee for Neill Public Library for over ten years. Rob, Jeannine and their four children enjoy making Pullman their home.

PJ Sanchez PJ Sanchez is a Washington State University graduate and a Relationship Manager at Washington Trust Bank in Pullman. He has worked at Washington Trust Bank since it opened its doors in Pullman and has been the Branch Manager since May of 2014. Since moving to the Palouse in the fall of 2009, PJ has enjoyed volunteering and being involved in the Pullman Community. PJ is involved in several civic groups including the Pullman Regional Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, Kiwanis Club, and Lions Club. PJ lives in Pullman with his wife, Kelli Kamimura, who is the Head Women’s Golf Coach at WSU, and their dog, Gus. In his spare time, PJ enjoys golfing, traveling and attending all Cougar sporting events.

Susan Weed Former Chamber President Susan Weed (1996-97) is co-owner and Office Manager for Pullman radio stations NewsTalk 1150 KQQQ-AM and 104.7 FM – KQQQ, Newcountry 104.3-KHTR, and Hits 100.5-KQZB. She is a long term member of the Chamber’s Board of Directors, serves as a member of the Pullman School District Board of Directors, as well as on the Pullman Civil Service Commission, The Pullman Regional Hospital Auxiliary Annual Holiday Tea, and the Washington/Idaho Symphony Board. Born and raised in Seattle, Susan and her husband Bill have owned and operated Pullman's radio stations since 1974. Susan says that Pullman has been a wonderful place to raise their 3 kids, and she loves going to businesses where she knows and can trust the person behind the counter. She believes that if you care deeply about something, like she does about our community, then it is important be get involved. Being a Board member gives Susan the satisfaction of knowing that she is helping to make Pullman a better place to live, work and do business!

Pat Wright Former president Pat Wright is another long term member of the Board of Directors. Since her retirement as general manager of The Bookie, Pat has remained active in the Pullman community. She enjoys working part-time at Neill's Flowers and Gifts and on the Pullman City Council.

In addition to being a Chamber of Commerce Board Member, Pat is Past President and Membership Chair of Pullman Regional Hospital Auxiliary and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Pullman Education Foundation.

Pat has lived in Pullman since 1975. She is originally from New York, and moved to California before residing in Pullman.

Working closely with WSU, ASWSU and chamber members to continue strong relations with students/businesses in Pullman. Where ‘there’s unity in the community’ to bridge the gap between campus and the Pullman community. The committee works on creating events that bring the students into the community and the community involvement with WSU. Projects: “30 Days of Pullman”, “Restaurant Week”, “National Lentil Festival”, “Holiday Fest”

Cabaret is the major fund-raising event for the chamber. Each spring, this formal affair has live and silent auctions, live music, dinner and dancing.

This group is always looking for people with a creative flair.

Government Affairs- Hailey Lewis This committee considers, reviews, and acts on local, state and national issues that directly affect the Pullman business community. It strives to keep members informed of these issues. This committee meets regularly via conference call with area legislators during legislative session.

Economic Development - Francis Benjamin Business growth and retention is the priority of this committee. This includes; encouraging business retention, recruiting new business and the continual quest for business growth and opportunities.

Projects: Legislative agenda, Pullman Business Portal, seminars, monitoring current government regulations and issues.

Meeting Time: The third Friday of each month, 7:30 a.m., SEL Event Center (group meets twice monthly during legislative session)

Pullman’s Fourth of July - Glenn Johnson This committee plans and coordinates Pullman’s community celebration that is held each year in Sunnyside Park. Activities include fireworks, live entertainment, BBQ, concessions, children’s games and more.

Meeting Time: Three meetings each year as announced.

National Lentil Festival – Britnee Christen This two-day, free event is held in late August each year. Activities include: Live Entertainment, Grand Parade, 5k Fun Run, Lentil Lane Food Court, Vendor Marketplace, Beer, Wine and Hard Cider Tasting Tent, Lentil Land Children’s Area, Free Lentil Chili, Cook-off Competition, Sports Tournaments and more. The festival likes to see new faces and hear fresh ideas.

Working with small, Palouse communities along the byway to increase business, tourism and awareness of events and activities.

Holiday Fest – EVENTS COORDINATOR This group plans Chocolate Decadence, Pullman’s Holiday Fest and Tree Lighting and holiday decorations throughout Pullman.

Chamber Led Initiatives Pullman 2040 Pullman 2040 is a comprehensive visioning process designed to engage the entire community in creating a long-range vision for the Pullman community. Town Gown Collaborative The Pullman community and Washington State University foster and maintain a strong relationship, characterized by high levels of communication and collaboration.
