The Scoop on Bridges, with an Emphasis on Number Corner Stephanie Bray, Franklin Elementary Principal Last year, the Pullman School District adopted the Bridges mathematical curriculum material for our elementary schools. The math adoption committee was comprised of teachers, district staff and administrators, our district Math TOSA Joni Stevens, and Assistant Superintendent Roberta Kramer. This committee went through rigorous investigation of various math curriculum materials. There was one material, that seemed to rise above the rest, Bridges! This material includes mathematical emphasis to address the Common Score State Standards (CCSS). This program is aligned to the critical areas of focus and major instructional shifts, and also addresses the eight mathematical practices as outlined in the CCSS. The Bridges curriculum includes Number Corner which is an important component for our students and the Pullman School District. Number Corner is a skills program that is an essential part of the Bridges curriculum. Number Corner is organized by each month of the school year. This collection of quick daily skills activities makes use of a classroom display featuring a calendar, growing collections, number lines, and more. These displays contribute to a math-rich environment that promote both procedural fluency, conceptual understanding, and most importantly Number Corner positively engages our students. The Number Corner is a daily 20-minute “workout” that introduces, reinforces, and extends skills and concepts related to the critical areas of students at each grade level. Over the course of a month, depending on the student’s grade level, students participate in a wide variety of activities. Many of these activities include, but are not limited to: predict and post new markers on the calendar grid, find patterns, count and record on a 100’s grid, analyze data, record/build arrays, use/explore fractions, engage in problem strings, solve problems with multiple steps, and participate in activities to increase a student’s understanding of mathematical operations and the relationships between numbers. With many of these being new terms to many of us who attended grade school earlier in life, often told to “just inverse and multiply” when dividing fractions, each element of the number corner has a defined purpose. These elements focus on a more in-depth understanding of mathematics, rather than to just “get an answer.” There are several components to Number Corner that are based on the student’s grade level (from Bridges teacher’s guide), please see below: • The Calendar Grid uses algebraic patterns and structures that introduce and reinforce a variety of key number concepts, number combinations and geometry skills. • The Calendar Collector promotes a deep understand of estimation, counting, value, measurement, and data through the use of a
variety of visual organizers. • Computational Fluency uses activities, games, and practice pages designed to develop and maintain fluency. • The Number Line promotes counting skills and number sense, skip counting, comparing and ordering numbers. • The Daily Rectangle provides a yearlong exploration of rectangular arrays and equations (2nd) • Solving Problems include activities that promote mathematical reasoning and writing equations, problem solving designed to elicit strategies and ideas • Problem Strings carefully deliver a series of related problems designed to bring out certain strategies and ideas through discussion and modeling. Various learning models are also addressed through Number Corner and are practiced throughout the year. Models help our learners to understand, construct, and apply ideas in mathematics. Each model is introduced, then practiced in both discussion and written form. These models include: the use of five and ten frames, fingers, number grids, number lines, base ten blocks, rectangles, arrays (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals), ratio tables, fraction models, clocks, and money value pieces. There are two other important elements to address when not only discussing the Number Corner in Bridges, but math in general. The mindset of our young learners and the value of questioning and discussion are vital. We continually promote a growth mindset, “a belief that a person’s basic ability can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point”. This mindset around continual growth promotes a love of learning and resilience that is essential for learning. Questioning and discussion allow for students to not only apply and articulate what they know, but also develop new understandings based on discussion with one another. Even through a year of uncertainty, one thing is certain, Pullman School District is dedicated to the implementation of the Bridges curriculum material and Number Corner. Our dedicated staff continue to refine their practices, showing “growth mindset” in the process, which ultimately impacts our students. Implementation will continue and we are committed to our continual learning, and we are excited about how this material and our instruction will shape the math-minds of tomorrow. Gratitude or Resilience: What is More Important During a Pandemic? Jim Evermann, School Board Member, District 3 As I reflect back on 2020, I am constantly thinking about all that has transpired, and how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected our students and schools. It was about this time last year that the reality of a global viral infection by SARS-CO 2 was beginning to resonate with me and the community of Pullman. We began by trying to gather as much information as we could through our state Office of Public Instruction (OSPI), the Spokane area schools, and the Spokane area and Whitman County Public Health (WCPH) offices. The information was varied on its preciseness, and timeliness. It is no wonder, since we had never experienced anything like this before. It is vital for me to remind myself daily that this was an unprecedented event. There were no prior guidelines, no set protocols, and no risk analysis or decision tree to follow when something like this happened. Initially, Pullman School District went online per the Governor’s executive order to close schools, OSPI’s guidance, and the scientific advice of the WCPH. This enabled us to navigate through the remainder of the spring 2020 school calendar. During the summer, through the leadership of Dr. Bob Maxwell, a District Reopening Plan was developed with the input of many. Dr. Maxwell stated that, “I recognize these are uncertain times for everyone, but I also know our community is supportive and resilient. We want to bring assurance to our families that we are ready to provide high quality education that meets our students where they are, and that we are prepared to adapt as conditions change.” Indeed, the conditions did change, but nonetheless, the District Reopening Plan was completed in the summer of 2020. Through the efforts of the Reopening Steering Committee, and the ten subcommittees (check the Pullman School District website for the Reopening Plan in its entirety at www.pullmanschools.org). The District Reopening Plan provided the needed structure, and recommends a time frame for the district schools to open. We were fortunate to start the implementation of the plan on January 4, 2021. It began slowly with staggered in-school participation by students Kindergarten-1st grade at all the elementary schools, and slowly-carefully expanded to grades 2nd and 3rd grade. Grades 4th and 5th are on schedule for February, 2021. Dealing with the pandemic has been problematic for many of the aforementioned uncertainties. However, we are fortunate to have increased availability of testing and the future offers the real possibility for vaccines to be available for teachers, and those individuals working with the students in the classrooms. As we begin the New Year, it is natural to reflect back to where we were, but just as importantly, it is vital to recognize where we are at, and continue to plan for – to hope for, the reopening of all of our schools. The opening question I posed was “gratitude or resilience: what is more important during this pandemic?” I would contend that both are essential for us as we move forward.
Gratitude, a huge thank you to our community, but this starts with the students, who have witnessed what a natural disaster can do to a community, a nation, and the world! Then a big thanks to parents, teachers, administrators, and all the district staff, who have been supportive and provided input on what they think is best. Also thank you to fellow Board Members, who have the heart of the school district on their minds constantly! Dr. Maxwell mentioned resilience in his reopening plan introduction – the strength to endure hardships under stressful times. Resilience is a learned behavior as was cited by Nancy Willard in her opinion piece “How to Find Resilience During this Difficult Time.” Nancy wrote this at the beginning of the pandemic, but the points she brought forward for students and teachers, applies to us all now as well. Nancy writes, “learning how to cope with adversity is an important part of healthy child development.” I might add that this applies to me as well, as I try to cope with the effects of the pandemic on our families, our schools, and our community. Nancy offers a few hints for us as we move through 2021 and beyond. They are: Make positive connections with friends and trusted adults; reach out to be kind – as there are many benefits to the doer as to the one who received such kindness; use our strengths – working well together since we all have different skills; focus on the good – since this will offset negative feelings during the stress brought about by the pandemic; and think things through – involve others in problem solving. In essence we have been using these skill sets off and on during this crisis, we just have to remember to say thank you a little more often. Linda Tippett named 2020 “Excellence in Education” Recipient Linda Tippett, Lincoln Middle School Special Education Paraprofessional, has been named the recipient of the “Excellence in Education” honor from our school board! Each year, the board selects one classified employee to receive this recognition. Linda was recommended for this recognition by Lincoln Middle School Science Teacher, Marla Haugen who was so inspired by Linda’s commitment and ability to build personal relationships with every single student in the room.
Highly Capable Program Referrals Will Be Accepted March 3 - March 5, 2021 Referral forms for current K-11th grade students to receive highly capable services during next school year will be accepted March 3 – March 5. February is…Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month How did National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month come to be? In 2005, the importance of addressing teen dating abuse was highlighted in the re-authorization of the Violence Against Women Act. The following year, both houses of Congress declared the first full week in February as National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week. In 2010 the week became a month - TDVAM! Relationships exist on a spectrum; how does yours seem to fare?

He’s known as LW to folks in Moscow but now he lives in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. LW Johnson was recently fishing on the Snake River for steelhead salmon with his friend when he started feeling bad. LW is a diabetic and it had been hours since he had eaten. He started to get very cold and shaky. His friend took him to Pullman Regional Hospital which was the closest facility.
“The Emergency folks took me right in and got me hooked up to fluids and gave me an EKG and got me stable again,” he said. “I felt relieved because they really knew what they were doing.” “They told me I was going to last at least a little while longer,” LW jokes. “I feller gets a little unsettled and I appreciated the good care and attention.”

Heartfelt Care at Pullman Regional Hospital— Cardiac Rehab A cardiac event, like a heart attack or surgery, can be life altering. “Our goal is to make sure our patients know they aren’t in this alone,” said Jennifer Saarela, Director of Pullman Regional Hospital’s Respiratory Care Services. The hospital’s 36-week cardiac rehabilitation program, typically covered by insurance, provides personalized education for nutrition, exercise, strength training, and medication management. Each patient has a personalized plan. It’s customized just for them and is based on the nature of their heart condition and their goals. “Our patients, and their loved ones, really appreciate the one-on-one care and monitoring we provide. People can be fearful of getting back to their lives or activity after a heart attack. Doing rehabilitation here, in the hospital, surrounded by medical experts who are closely monitoring you, provides that ultimate peace of mind,” said Jennifer. Don’t Delay Your Care 24-Hour Award-Winning Emergency Medicine is Here for You Pullman Regional Hospital’s emergency department saw 11,111 patients in 2020. “That's actually 12% less than 2019 and mirrors a nationwide trend of 26% decline in emergency visits,” says Dr. Pete Mikkelsen, Medical Director of Emergency Services. Typically, you'd think this was a good thing—fewer emergencies—but 2020 was anything but typical. Emergency physicians like Dr. Mikkelsen say there are many potential factors to the decline in visits. The Food & Shelter Folks
2020 By the Numbers COVID-19 and the Malden/Pine City fire created an uptick in our community’s need for healthy emergency food and safe shelter in 2020. We met many families who had never needed to use the food bank before. We helped people navigate services like rental and energy assistance for the first time. For example, nearly 50% more people received energy assistance to keep their heat and lights on in 2020 compared to 2019. Almost 16% more people used the food bank, and we distributed 12% more food than in 2019. We helped folks affected by wildfires by coordinating emergency housing, longterm rental support, temporary power during property cleanup, and to power temporary shelter for residents living on their lots.

“Palouse Tables Project: On the Move” Receives USDA Grant Community Action Center received a grant of almost $400,000 from the USDA’s National Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA), which will make it possible to carry out a project called Palouse Tables Project: On the Move over the next four years. The project will create a mobile farm stand to bring fresh local produce to towns in Whitman and Latah Counties where many people experience hunger, and towns located in “food deserts.” Multiple community organizations have been working together over the past two years to plan the mobile farm stand under the umbrella of the Whitman County Food Coalition. The farm stand will be set up weekly in community gardens, community centers, and “hotspots” that guarantee foot traffic. The project will pay local farmers for their produce, while selling the food at affordable prices for residents. As a true social enterprise, the project will run on donations from the community as well as food sales. This collaborative initiative will increase the economic vitality and livability of the Palouse’s small communities.

We still encourage monetary donations. Your dollar will go farther in buying food than if you spend it yourself at the store! She earned her Bachelor's in Music Education from the University of Alaska, Anchorage, and is currently taking courses to obtain her equivalency in Music Therapy. Angela Fridley, who had been working on administrative and financial projects at The Gladish, is now the community and cultural center’s General Manager. Fridley was living in the area until 2003 when she moved to Germany for two years and later to Monterey, Calif., for three
events such as Dinner Theatre (partnering with the Pullman Civic Theatre) and Brewfest/Winefest,” she said. “But my biggest goal is to be a part of the team that brings the Gladish Performance Arts Center to the Palouse.” Her spare time is shared among family

The new general manager will oversee the administration, programs and strategic plan of the Friends of Gladish. She and her skilled and dedicated management team and staff are already involved with growing Friends of Gladish and helping gather resources needed for a spectacular theater remodel. “I want to see Gladish become the ‘go to’ place for people to hold their business and personal events in the Palouse. “I want I want to help organize Gladish
members and animal favorites. “Spending time with my husband, Patrick, is my greatest joy,” Fridley said. “Oftentimes, we take off on our Harley bagger for a ride with friends when the weather allows. Last summer, he bought me a Honda Rebel. I start my riding lessons this spring.” Family members Kyler (son) and Jamisen (daughter) live close by so they watch a movie together once or twice a month. “When I do get time to relax at home, I am never lonely with my three small dogs and two cats to keep me company,” she said.

Home-ward Bound A Virtual Fur Ball “… And now, the moment you’ve been waiting for…”
With 2021 now well underway, we want to thank the community for its support and share some of the highlights from last year’s work at the Whitman County Humane Society (WCHS): • We placed over 816 homeless animals in new homes, beating last year’s record by 260 animals! • We responded to the needs of cats and kittens affected by the fire in Malden, WA, not only thanks to your donations, but because of the space provided by the Lauren McCluskey Cat Wing. • We rescued over 250 animals from hoarding and/or out-ofcontrol population situations. • We returned 96 stray animals to their owners. • We issued 120 Spay and Neuter Assistance Program vouchers to help owners alter their pets. • We received grants from the Orvis and Petfinder Foundation for dog enrichment, the WA Federation of Animal Care for our spay and neuter program, a Petfinder grant for disaster and emergency response, and a Hills Pet nutrition grant. We also received a Whitman County Nonprofit Relief grant. • We were gifted with a much-needed new storage shed built by Prodigy Construction with support from our friends at Pullman Building Supply. Now we are anxious to leave the pandemic behind so that we can renew our face-to-face work with the community. We want to expand our outreach programs and establish stronger partnerships in rural communities throughout the region. We especially want to stop the overpopulation of cats. Last year we were very fortunate to hold two of our major fundraisers – the Fur Ball, and the Benefit Bowling Tournament – prior to the COVID-19 shutdown in March. Since then, our inperson events have been canceled and will be for the foreseeable future. That is why your support is especially helpful right now. He is one of the sweetest cats you will ever meet and instantly purrs when you start to pet him. Pullman Community Council on Aging A legacy of caring for Pullman seniors Thank you to those who join us in making Pullman senior friendly Pullman Community Council on Aging is truly a home-grown nonprofit. Since 1973 the Council has been working to support Pullman seniors, improve their quality of life, and bring together senior-focused community members and partner organizations into a collaborative alliance. Supported entirely through community grants and donations, one hundred percent of all donations are used in Pullman and Whitman County in support of Pullman Meals on Wheels, Senior Chore Service and Guide to Senior Services. We are very grateful for our community’s extraordinary support during a year with extraordinary circumstances facing seniors.

Help a Senior Neighbor this Winter With the onset of winter and snow, senior citizens often need help with snow removal. As part of Pullman Community Council on Aging’s commitment to helping seniors remain in their homes, the Senior Chore Service is looking for Pullman residents willing to assist seniors in their neighborhoods. Timely snow removal ensures that these seniors have safe access into and out of their homes, especially for Meals on Wheels delivery. PCCoA is setting up connections between seniors needing snow removal help and those in their neighborhoods willing to help throughout the winter. Meals on Wheels Pullman’s Meals on Wheels program has been delivering daily hot, nutritious noon-time meals to seniors for 46 years. Meal delivery provides daily contact with a caring volunteer while helping seniors retain independence and the ability to remain in their own home. They can also hasten recovery from illness or surgery. Meals are available to Pullman seniors • Age 60 or older, • Who are unable to leave home unassisted, or for whom leaving takes considerable and taxing effort, • Who are unable to cook meals that are appetizing and healthy. • Meals are available 7 days a week; recipients can also choose to receive them only on selected days. Meals are also currently available to seniors who are limiting their exposure to COVID-19. If you are having difficulty meeting your nutritional needs, please contact us. Volunteers Make the Difference Pullman Community Council on Aging would like to express our most heartfelt gratitude to the over 250 volunteers who delivered over 4,800 meals to homebound seniors, a 25% increase. Most importantly, in a time when they needed it most, these volunteers helped keep our most vulnerable citizens safely in their homes.

Pullman Honors Students
We are proud of the seventy-four students who earned academic honors in our fall quarter. Forty-six students won President’s Honors and twenty-eight students Vice President’s Honors. Students must be enrolled full-time and in good standing to gain this recognition. President’s honors require a term GPA of 3.5 or higher, VP’s honors a term GPA of 3.0 or above. Two hundred fifty-four students enrolled in our college program during the fall quarter, during which classes and services had to move entirely online due to the public health crisis. Students in our fall program represented over one hundred high schools across Washington, with most students currently enrolled at or having graduated from area high schools, including seventy-two students and graduates from Pullman High School. Our honors students inspire their peers and our Pullman Center through their pursuit of academic excellence. Their achievement also connects them with outstanding scholarship while at SFCC and transfer opportunities before or upon graduation with an Associate’s degree. Our honors students shared how to focus on classes and nurture their educational and career goals and aspirations:

Having been passed down the previous 'Yia Yia Nikki's' in 2013, we took the old values from the previous owners and morphed them into the Yia Yia Nikki's of today. We took off as La Grande's #1 Greek restaurant in no time. Serving people a unique drive-thru experience with the combination of amazing food and large portions. At the beginning of 2020 (we know, perfect timing!) we decided it was time to expand to the other side of La Grande. This location would be able to give people an outdoor seating experience. With the extra room, we were able to expand our menu by adding delicious sandwiches, amazing loaves of bread, and hot soups! Expanding even further at the end of 2020, we secured our 3rd location in Pullman, WA! We will be bringing you an awesome, one-of-a-kind, drive-thru, and authentic Greek experience. Turning an old bank into a full functioning restaurant wasn't a bad idea because we have a nice safe for our secret recipes!

STUDENTS OF THE MONTH Shelley Yu Shelley Yu has participated in many activities in Pullman High School, including Knowledge Bowl, Concert Band, and Science Bowl. She has kept up with her academics throughout high school and became a National Merit Semifinalist last fall. Having played piano since she was 7, Shelley continued with lessons in high school and has used that skill to give back to her community, playing for local assisted-living homes and multiple fundraisers and events. Shelley has been working at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center since her sophomore year and will continue to pursue a biology-related degree in college; she will most likely major in either molecular biology or biochemistry.
Hannah Talbot Hannah Talbot has been involved with ASB and FFA since her Freshman year. She has served as the Freshman VP, Sophomore President, Executive Treasurer, and Executive President for ASB. She has also been the Building Communities Committee Head the past two years in FFA. When she is not at ASB or FFA you can find her cheering on the sidelines of football games and wrestling meets or performing at halftime with the dance team. During her four years cheering, she earned All-Great Northern League honors and received the sportsmanship award her Freshman year. Hannah’s favorite high school memory was traveling to the state football game with the cheer team her Freshman year. Hannah hasn’t decided where she is going to college but knows she is going to major in Elementary Education.

Cougars craft chocolates by hand
This Valentine’s Day, treat yourself or your special someone to chocolate truffles from WSU Crimson Confections. WSU Crimson Confections is a student-run business producing the world’s first commercial Cougar chocolates. The company, founded in 2016, is the product of Washington State University’s hospitality business management, food science, marketing, and engineering students. Working in the Marriott Foundation Hospitality Teaching Center in the Carson College of Business at WSU Pullman, students craft a variety of truffles made by hand from locally sourced ingredients.
2015. Since 2016, she’s worked with Callison, developing the company and—as chocolatier and production manager—creating formulas, testing shelf-life, and more. Truffles come in a variety of flavors, including dark chocolate salted caramel, milk chocolate cinnamon, dark chocolate espresso, milk chocolate toffee hazelnut, and white chocolate Earl Grey.

Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities seeks judges What are Washington State University undergraduates curious about—and researching?

Find out March 29 at SURCA 2021, the ninth annual Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities, and consider signing up to be a judge.
• Student presentations will be virtual and available to judges and guests via Zoom. Schedules for this year’s online presentations will be posted on the SURCA website as soon as they are assigned.
At SURCA, WSU students from all majors, years in college, and campuses share their mentored research, scholarship, and creative activities in any of nine categories divided by discipline. Judges use a rubric to score each presentation.
• Judging will also be virtual. Judges will join presenters in Zoom meeting spaces from 3 to 4:15 p.m. to learn about projects; judges will also meet students for one-to-one, question-and-answer sessions from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

• The new “research proposal” category is for students who are working with a mentor and have identified a knowledge gap to be addressed by an experimental or future research plan.
