Serenity Ridge Farm is a busy Equestrian Center in Pullman, WA. We are located just a few miles from downtown Pullman but have that “out on the farm” feeling. We are surrounded by miles of quiet and peaceful farmland. This provides a wonderful training environment for horses and riders of all disciplines and ability levels.

We cater to riders of all ages. We welcome kids as young as 18 months for our Little Wrangler Program and Unicorn Encounters. We have an amazing group of Unicorns and Ponies that can make even the shyest and most timid riders feel comfortable experiencing horses for the first time. Once riders are more independent around the horses they can join our Riding School.

This program includes weekly riding lessons and weekly horsemanship classes. We take pride in shaping well rounded horse people with practical knowledge of horses and how to be safe around them. We work hard to create an environment where our clients can enjoy horses, and learn about riding and showing.

There are many ways to experience horses at SRF. No matter what your dreams are, we are ready to support you in reaching your goals. We offer english and wetern riding lessons. We teach trail, barrels, jumping, dressage, and even Vaulting. Incline Equestrian Vaulting Team practices at the farm. Vaulting is a mixture of dance and gymnastics put to music on horseback. It is a ton of fun and a great challenge. We run a recreational vaulting program for riders looking for a fun social fitness class. We also offer competitive teams for all ages.

There are many fun and educational events held at the farm for riders and spectators to enjoy. We host horse shows, birthday parties, school tours, and corporate retreats. It is important to us that everyone feel welcome at the farm. We hope we can have you out the farm and introduce you to our horses and Unicorns soon!

STUDENTS OF THE MONTH Kyle Volk

Hailey Talbot

Kyle Volk, son of Chris and Melody Volk, has participated in many activities at Pullman High School. He was ASB Press Secretary for three years and helped with homecoming planning and spirit assemblies. He has been a lineman for the football team since his freshman year and a discus, shot, and javelin thrower for the track and field team since his sophomore year. He has lettered and earned scholar athlete awards in both sports.

Hailey Talbot, daughter of Brian and Edie, has been involved with Varsity soccer, basketball, and softball since her freshman year.

In soccer, Hailey earned 2nd team all-league honors during her Junior year and has been 1st team allleague academic every sports season.

When she isn’t playing a sport, you can find Hailey taking pictures and videos of different PHS events.

Along with sports, Hailey has been involved with Spirit Club, Dance Team, and ASB, serving as the Kyle is an Eagle Scout and a executive Activities Liaison. One former Senior Patrol Leader for of Hailey’s favorite memories as a Troop 460. He worked with the Pullman Parks & Recreation Department Greyhound was during her sophomore year, when the softball team came to plan, design, and manage the building of a flag retirement fire pit at from behind and beat East Valley off of her walk-off hit. Recently, Hailey Mary's Park in Pullman for his Eagle Scout project. He worked as the signed her Letter of Intent to continue her softball career at Columbia Quarter Master for a Boy Scout National Youth Leadership Training camp Basin College in Pasco, Washington. Distinguished Young Women of Pullman 2021 Distinguished Young Women of Pullman program will take place at the Pullman High School Auditorium* on Saturday March 27, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. Each participant is judged on scholastic, fitness, talent, self-expression, and interview. Two years ago two Colfax high school teachers, Andrew and Ronda Penwell were sponsored by the LWV of Pullman to travel to Harvard to receive training from David Moss, PhD in teaching civics and government using the Harvard Case Method.

Since then, the Penwells report that they use the cases in their high school civics classes as an interactive way to teach history, government, and civic education.

The public is invited to attend the LWV meeting on March 4th to learn about “The Fight Over the Equal Rights Amendment.” The discussion will be facilitated by Andrew and Ronda Penwell. Background information and reading materials will be shared with LWV members ahead of the meeting. Florence Nightingale April 1, 7:00 p.m.

Cathryn Cummings will reenact her one-woman show telling the story of Florence Nightingale. Cathryn grew up in Walla Walla, WA and holds a Doctor of Divinity from Princeton University. She is nationally recognized for her theatrical story telling. She is a featured speaker on Ted Talks and has created five shows that tell the stories of remarkable women in history that inspired her to be who she is.

Florence Nightingale was an English social reformer, statistician, and the founder of modern nursing. She set an example of compassion, commitment to patient care and diligent and thoughtful hospital administration. The first official nurses’ training program, her Nightingale School For Nurses, opened in 1860 and is now called the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery at King’s College London.

Palouse Regional Housing Assessment March 16 Brian Points is the President of Points Consulting in Moscow, Idaho.

He is an economist who was the Project Manager for the Palouse Regional Housing Assessment 2019 by Thomas P. Miller & Associates. Brian will discuss housing affordability and how it limits the opportunities for many residents and dampens the region’s potential economic growth.

Pullman City Budget in the year of COVID-19 April 20 Mike Urban, who is also serving as the Director of Finance, will discuss the $1,000,000 CARES ACT grant that Pullman received, the impact of COVID on Pullman’s tax revenues, and the overall revenue forecast, among other issues.

OBSERVER CORPS: THE EYES AND EARS OF THE LEAGUE One of the tools the League of Women Voters of Pullman has in its mission of working for good government is the Observer Corps.

Any rule-making body that has the ability to spend tax dollars is a legitimate concern of the League of Women Voters. One of our roles is to observe, for the public, how boards and commissions are spending tax dollars. League member involvement in the Observer Corps is valuable to understanding how local government works. League members may not speak at meetings they attend as an “observer”, but can alert the Pullman League's Board if there are issues on which the League has a position and to which they might speak in support of, or in opposition to, a planned action of that board.

The current group of fourteen volunteers is attending nine of the various city and county boards, councils, and commissions to observe and report factual information about the proceedings. The League believes that the presence of Observers helps keep government entities attentive to their jobs, with the proper respect for doing the public’s business, and promoting transparency and accountability.

The observer reports are posted on the League Website, lwvpullman.org.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: KARYN HARDY I'd heard of activities that the LWV supported and thought they sounded very interesting, but I think I became really interested in League when I learned about the Whitman County poverty study that was conducted several years ago. I contacted Mary Collins at the time to learn about the information that was collected, I did not know her at all, and even though I did not add one thought or help one bit she kept me on the list and was incredibly gracious and inclusive.

The first meeting I attended just see what LWV was all about, and found the group welcoming and inclusive, and patient. I learned so much in that first meeting and liked every person at the meeting. Months later. I feel the same. I think the best thing about League is it's members, and the body of knowledge you collectively share is so impressive.

I love the education aspect of League. For me, voting rights might be the most important issue. I am often out of town visiting family, but when I'm in Pullman I'm happy to lend a hand with most anything in a supportive role. I am also happy to be helping with the Observer Corps observing the City Council meetings.

THE 2020 ELECTION During the 2020 election cycle, The League of Women Voters of Pullman was actively involved in activities supporting its mission of "Empowering Voters; Defending Democracy." In October three forums were held via Zoom, two for candidates for local offices, and one to discuss ballot issues. The Zoom format worked quite well and attendance was good.

In addition to providing the forums, eighteen members volunteered to help finalize ballot counting at the Elections Office in Colfax. They assisted staff with ensuring each and every ballot was counted. The volunteers were impressed with the careful monitoring and tracking that was built into the process for handling the ballots.

Strength in numbers: Expanded #PalouseUnity campaign features more community partners and renewed commitment Call it #PalouseUnity 2.0.

This time, it’s not just Joe Vandal and Butch T. Cougar working together to combat community spread of COVID-19.

It’s everybody—from healthcare workers and first responders to business leaders in both Pullman and Moscow, as well as Washington State University and the University of Idaho.

“The primary message is we are the Palouse. We are one community. We happen to be separated by a border, but we are all working together to keep each other safe and healthy,” says Phil Weiler, vice president for marketing and communications at Washington State University. “It takes all of us. We’re all in this together.”

The renewed and expanded effort launched at the end of February. New partners include Gritman Medical Center, Moscow Chamber of Commerce, Palouse Medical, Pullman Chamber of Commerce, Pullman Regional Hospital, and Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories.

“Everyone wants to be involved. Every segment of our community is saying, ‘We support this.’ It suddenly has become this very broad coalition,” Phil Weiler says.

“We’re a naturally collaborative community; being diligent in COVID-19 precautions, like masking, is one more example that we’re all in this together. It’s so important we each do our part,” says Rueben Mayes (WSU ’92 Soc. Sci., ’00 MBA), chief development officer at Pullman Regional Hospital.

“People on the Palouse know the value of hard work and community. By working together to protect our neighbors, we can keep our whole community safe and healthy,” says Peter Mundt, director of community relations and marketing at Gritman Medical Center in Moscow. “Each of us can do our part to defeat COVID-19 simply by wearing masks, keeping social distance, limiting gatherings, frequently washing our hands, and getting the vaccine when it is available. A safe and brighter 2021 is just around the corner if we all do our part.”

Like last time, community members are encouraged to show their regional pride and spirit of cooperation with the hashtag #PalouseUnity.

The health-and-safety message is similar, too. Along with unity, the campaign is calling for community members on

both side of the border to: • Wear a mask.

• Wash their hands.

• Watch their distance. That is, maintain a physical distance of 6 feet from people, especially indoors.

“They’re being called the three Ws,” says Jeanne Weiler, downtown initiatives coordinator in the Office of the President at WSU Pullman.

A year into the pandemic, these strategies remain key in fighting COVID-19. “When we have broad vaccinations across the nation, it’s going to change the make-up of this pandemic,” Jeanne Weiler says. “But, right now, we are in a precarious situation.”

The broadened campaign is largely centered on social media. Expect to see some recognizable faces.

“These are your friends. These are your neighbors. These are people from all walks of life in the Palouse region,” says

“Follow the River: Portraits of the Columbia Plateau” runs March 1 to August 21 at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU. Two virtual programs in March help kick-off the exhibit, which presents Worth D. Griffin’s portraits of Plateau tribal members as well as cultural artifacts.

Radio and print advertising is also slated to accompany the social media efforts. And there are already plans to expand the messaging. Once vaccines become more readily and widely available, the campaign will be promoting them, too.

“Your medical community is doing its part to care for you during a pandemic. And I see our community doing its part.

Making safe practices part of our daily lives is one way we’ll get through this. It’s working,” says, Dr. Pete Mikkelsen, medical director of emergency services at Pullman Regional Hospital. “While we've seen lulls followed by terrible surges in COVID-19 illness in the community, recently we’ve had fewer patients sick with COVID-19, and we're grateful for that.

We’ve got to remain vigilant. Please continue to wear your mask, appropriately distance and, when it’s available to you, please, please get your vaccine.”

Community members still needed to judge student research Community members are invited to attend—and judge—this year’s virtual Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities.

At SURCA, students from all majors, years in college, and WSU campuses share their mentored research, scholarship, and creative activities in any of nine categories divided by discipline. Judges use a rubric to score each presentation.

Judging for the ninth annual event runs from 3 to 4:15 p.m. and 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. March 29 via Zoom. Scores are due by 7 p.m. Top presenters receive their awards March 30. Sign up to judge at https://SURCA.wsu.edu.

AYR Cuisine joins The Gladish offerings AYR (Ayur-Yoga Regional) Cuisine is a new business at The Gladish and also a part of the owner’s research project.

Rinkal Saini is studying Organic and Sustainable Farming in the Master’s in Agriculture program at WSU and advised by Dr. Lynne Carpenter-Boggs.

Saini’s project is building a customer base of Ayurvedic vegetarian Indian cuisine, using principles of Yoga, Ayurveda and Organic farming.

“We will soon introduce a survey to our customers as part of a study of the social and economic sustainability of this type of cuisine and business, said owner Saini.

For economic purposes, and in order to effectively build the customer base for this study, she will not be able to accept more than 3 orders at a time by any customers.

Looking to the future…

PCT supports new venues at The Gladish Pullman Civic Theatre (PCT), the Palouse’s oldest community theater, is excited to return to its roots by bringing some of their upcoming performances back to one of its previous homes at The Gladish!

Historically, PCT has performed a number of shows at The Gladish, including "The Miracle Worker" and "Meet Me in St. Louis" at The Gladish Little Theater and larger shows such as “Oliver” and “James and the Giant Peach” in the Domey Auditorium. But since moving into their current home at Nye Street Theater, PCT has only performed a handful of shows at The Gladish.

PCT has recently seen an explosion of growth in its volunteer and patron base which has allowed them to increase productions and expand their PCT Academy classes and kids’ camps.

With this growth, PCT has found that it is in need of additional space to expand. A return to The Gladish was the obvious decision for this expansion and PCT is excited to also be partnering with The Gladish in efforts to create the Palouse’s only Performing Arts Centre.

PCT returning to The Gladish will also be honoring its own history by partnering with The Gladish to produce dinner theatre events in Gladish's View Room.

PCT will continue to host shows at its Nye Street Theatre venue, as well as stretching their offerings with the addition of the three Gladish venues. They are excited to start live shows as soon as Covid allows.

Meanwhile, they are continuing virtual performances for the Palouse on YouTube, and its webpage (www.pullmancivictheatre.org)!

WHITMAN COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY

To our Animal Loving Friends in Whitman County, We wanted you to know about a special case that we’ve recently had – a five-year old German shepherd who came to the shelter with severe anxiety. Kuno was brought to us through an animal control seizure and subsequent surrender from the owner. Kuno was very fearful of humans and exhibited aggression in some of his behaviors and body language. All the staff were concerned that he might not be adoptable since he initially seemed so unapproachable.

Luckily, one of our team members, Zoe Skiadopoulou, had worked with a trainer who she thought could help. She reached out to Mike Crawford who has extensive experience working with these types of dogs. Perhaps because Mike is particularly fond of German shepherds, even though he lives in Orofino, he came and started working and Kuno with Kuno. Mike immediately saw that Kuno would Zoe “Smiles All Around” be able to be adopted – that Kuno could trust people – it just demanded calm, consistent training.

That’s where the staff began – every day – starting with training by hand-feeding him through the bars of his kennel, which he took to very well. Then Mike worked with team member Annie Lindsey, to help her gain Kuno’s trust so that she would be able to go into his kennel successfully during this initial trust building phase.

After this, Zoe and Annie have been able to successfully bathe Kuno, brush him out, take him on walks, and work on his basic obedience training. Kuno loves being around his people and wants love more than anything else.

As Zoe says: “All of our staff absolutely love Kuno! We are so happy that he was given a second chance at a happy life.”

Second changes are always possible with support from our friends in Whitman County, with generosity from people like Mike Crawford, and with the consistent love of a first-rate shelter team.

Star Pet Second Chance Kuno!

Kuno’s owner was no longer able to adequately care for him, so he was brought into WCHS by one of our kind animal control officers. Upon arrival at the shelter, Kuno was very scared and unsure of the staff and his new surroundings. Due to his fear and initial distrust, he was initially deemed a bite risk. Luckily, we were able to bring in an amazing trainer who has previous experience with fear aggressive German shepherds. Thanks to him and our staff members, we have been able to gain his trust and see him for the amazing dog that he truly is!

Kuno will make someone a great cuddle buddy, since cuddling and sitting on staff members’ laps are his favorite pastime. Kuno has displayed good recall during his runs out in the large play yards and knows basic commands.

Kuno is neutered, microchipped, dewormed, and up to date on vaccinations. His adoption fee is $175.

A Future Family Medicine Residency Program In his 30 plus years of practicing family medicine, Dr. Stephen Hall has taught hundreds of future physicians. One might say the next step—teaching physician residents—wasn’t a question of if, but when. “It’s been a vision of mine for more than 10 years to bring a residency program to Pullman. And now, we’re planning for that reality,” says Dr. Hall.

Dr. Hall is a physician with Palouse Medical in Pullman, WA, and in 2020, he became the Developing Program Director for the Washington State University’s Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine & Pullman Regional Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program. Not long after, Jade Stellmon joined the team as the program Administrator.

“We’re in the very first stages of pursing an accredited program through a partnership with WSU and Pullman Regional Hospital. It takes a lot of people to make this happen, but Pullman is special,

and there’s no better place to train future physicians.”

BOARD REPORT

The Excitement is Building

Pullman Public Schools is indeed excited about the three current construction projects we have going on! These additions to our district will allow us to further support our students.

Lincoln Middle School Addition and Remodel The Lincoln Middle School Project consists of two parts. Firstly, the addition will add 14,000 square feet of space to our current building, which is currently over capacity for how many students it is recommended to accomodate. This space will consist of 8 new standard classrooms, and 2 new science classrooms. We are also adding a new set of student bathrooms, and a new teacher work room. Secondly, the remodel will consist of some major improvements to the school. Some things happening on the outside will include a redesigned entrance from SE Crestview Street, expanded student drop off area, additional parking, and better outdoor lighting. These outdoor improvements will contribute to safety and efficiency with drop off and pick up of students. The remodel will also include a new building entrance with secure double doors to further improve security for the staff and students inside the building, helping front office staff have easier awareness and control of visitors entering the building. The entire building will also be getting a much needed new metal roof. Some improvements happening on the inside are expanding the commons area, upgrading the stage lighting and sound system, some classroom and staff office changes, redesigned locker room with additional lockers and additional music storage. These amazing an extensive projects have been well underway since June 2020, and are expected to be completed in August 2021. In total the project will cover remodeling 98,000 square feet.

Whitman County Transportation Cooperative Ground was broken on the new Whitman County Transportation Cooperative and Bus Maintenance Facility in September 2020. This project is expected to be completed in September 2021. This new facility is located in north Pullman, on Albion Road. The building will be 21,000 square feet. The amenities for this new facility will have 6 bus service bays, 10 indoor light maintenance/charging service bays, 10 outdoor covered parking spots, 1 bus wash bay, electric bus charging station with capacity to add more charging stations in the future, a fuel island for both diesel and gasoline, administrative and training space, parts tools and chemical storage, a perimeter fence with a remote access gate. The roof structure on this building is designed to accept solar panels when funding is available. This new transportation facility will allow for better maintenance of our buses.

Sunnyside/Franklin/Jefferson HVAC Upgrades The school district will be adding cooling to the current HVAC systems at Sunnyside Elementary, Franklin Elementary, and Jefferson Elementary Schools. This will allow for a more comfortable learning environment for our students during the warmer months. This much needed addition to our buildings will also allow for windows to remain closed during our frequently smoky fall months, allowing for safer air for our students and staff to breath. This project is expected to start and end in the summer of 2021.

Quiet Start for a Strong Finish The halls and classrooms of Pullman High School have been quiet during the 20-21 school year. Although our building has been quiet, with close attention, one finds our halls and classrooms have not been silent.

Our community is well aware of the impact COVID-19 has had on our schools. However, everyone may not be aware that we have been slowly and safely bringing several groups of students back to PHS all year.

Our special needs teachers and support staff have been working with students from day one of this school year. Our staff has done a fantastic job making sure our students needs are being met, building relationships with families, and ensuring consistency to our students with special needs during this very challenging time.

Early in the year, we also began to bring students into the building that needed a little extra attention. Some needed help, while others needed a better internet connection. Regardless of their need, our doors have been open. Our staff has worked to fulfill their needs and our fabulous kitchen staff has provided them with lunch.

Since returning from winter break, we have had other classes begin to offer learning pods as well. Again, these pods allow our students to get some hands on experiences; something desperately missed during online learning. Besides Metals, pods are currently offered in Photography, Plant Science, and Weights.

We will soon be offering optional learning pods in Textiles, Vet Science, New Media, Yoga and Drama.

Safety for our staff and students has been in the forefront of our minds all year. Brining students in for learning pods has allowed us to slowly and safely increase the number of students at PHS. This practice will allow for a smooth transition as we prepare for a return to in-person learning and a strong finish to our school year.

As November approached, we began to plan opportunities for more students to safely enter the building and take part in optional learning pods for some of our hands on Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes. These pods consist of students in groups of less than ten. Students attend in the mornings once or twice a week before heading home for their online synchronous classes in the afternoon. Our first course to begin offering student pods was Metals, one of our shop classes. Mr. Schotzko, our Metals teacher, has been running learning pods since mid-November.

The Food & Shelter Folks Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program Benefits Tenants and Landlords Pullman Serves It Forward Launched by local community members and restaurants, Pullman Serves It Forward is an opportunity to support our local businesses AND provide quality meals for families in need.

COVID-19 caused a tidal wave of unemployment, resulting in a sharp rise in housing crises.

People who have been laid off often struggle to pay rent or fall behind on rental payments.

Missed rental checks and eviction moratoria can cause significant financial hardship for landlords, as they need to pay property-related costs.

CAC’s Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program helps renters and landlords through this crisis. The program connects people with limited incomes to safe affordable housing. Section 8 vouchers pay for a portion of rent, and tenants cover the balance of rental payments out of their incomes. Landlords who accept Section 8 vouchers receive a guaranteed rental payment, which keeps income flowing in a time when COVID-related eviction moratoria could sink property owners.

“If landlords think their tenants are struggling with payments, encourage the tenants to apply for Section 8,” said Liz Corsetti, Housing Program Coordinator. “If you as a landlord are willing to negotiate rent with a Section 8 voucher holder, it can keep your units filled and get some guaranteed rental income.”

The Section 8 waiting list prioritizes people who are elderly and people with disabilities. People who apply for vouchers should expect a 3-6 month wait if they are part of those priority populations.

Otherwise, the waiting list for housing vouchers is 1-2 years.

If you need affordable permanent housing, especially if you are elderly or have disabilities, you can apply for Section 8 online at cacwhitman. org. On the site, you can apply for housing in Whitman, Spokane, Ferry, and Northern Counties.

“If you are applying and you want to live in Whitman County, be sure to only click the waiting list for Whitman County,” Corsetti said. “That will streamline the process and keep your information here. That’s going to get you to a voucher quicker.”

Tell me about yourself. How long have you worked at Community Action Center?

I started December 3. I’ve been living in Moscow since 2017 and was working at WSU before I started working for Community Action Center. It was good to get back to work after four months, after being laid off. It was weird being home for that long. My house was super clean! I’m originally from California but we moved

to Cottonwood and then to Moscow. Both my sons went to U of I and my dad is down in Lewiston.

Describe what you do at Community Action Center.

I am the front desk administrator. Now that the lobby is closed, we are getting a lot of calls. I answer the telephone, schedule appointments, answer questions, and post payments for rent when people drop off rent checks. I post questionnaires when people apply for energy assistance. I do the mail, postage, and make sure we have supplies on hand for

What’s special about your job?

I am a very people-person.

I’ve worked in customer services for 30 years. I like helping people, that’s why I was really excited about this job. I like to be organized, and I’ve made spreadsheets to stay on top of my work and stay organized.

What do you do in your free time?

I like to read, sit out on my deck, and try to relax. I like to do arts and crafts. My kids call me “artsy fartsy.” When I lived in Cottonwood I would make signs, like “Welcome” signs. I like to play video games. My son got me started playing two of his games!
