EXERCISE 01

identity card

In exercise 1, we were taught what goes into making a business card. We were then asked to make a business card that represented ourselves. The card was only to be made in black and white, and use type rather than graphics to drive the design.

was moving away from that very position). But some of the institutional features of design practice are at odds with zealous attempts at self-expression. The idea of a decentred message does not necessarily sit well in a professional relationship in which the client is paying the designer to convey specific information or emotions. In addition,

most design is done in a collaborative setting, either within a client relationship or in the context of a studio that utilises the talents of numerous creative people, with the result that the origin of any particular idea is uncertain. The ever-present pressure of technology and electronic communication only muddies the water further.

EXERCISE 03

type as a shape

This exercise required us to pick two letters from the same font and create a unique symbol by peicing those letters together. We also studied how scale affects design by printing the designs in different sizes.

EXERCISE 04

type as expression

For exercise 4 we were given ten words that convey different emotions and we had to find a typeface to match each word. This was to teach us that type can convey feeling. We were also given three different quotes that we had to layout, which taught us that combining type can convey emphasis.

project 01

personal branding

For our first project, we were required to make a personal brand. The main part of this was to create a logo using our initials. We were then asked to use that logo in several different formats, including a business card, envelope, and letterhead.

For Project 2, we were all given a designer or a specific time period in design history, and we were required to make a booklet about our topic. For my project, I had Austrian designer, Stefan Sagmeister.

cereal boxes

For project 4, we redesigned cereal boxes. We first started by putting our chosen cereal in 50 different typefaces, and then we narrowed down our choices from there. We first had to make two black and white boxes with limited typefaces and limited graphics. For the final box, we were able to add color and a few more graphics.
