PART 2

GLOSSARY.

pg. 17

KERNING [kur-ning], verb; In typography, kerning (less commonly mortising) is the process of adjusting the spacing between characters in a proportional font, usually to achieve a visually pleasing result. Kerning adjusts the space between individual letter forms, while tracking (letter-spacing) adjusts spacing uniformly over a range of characters. In a well kerned font, the two-dimensional blank spaces between each pair of characters all have a visually similar area.

pg. 18

BRANDING

[bran-ding], noun;

In design, branding is defined as the marketing practice of creating a name, symbol or design that identifies and differentiates a product from other products. Brand orientated design utilises various elements including brand name, logo, styling and associated visuals - to construct a positive brand image. Dynamic growth is the outcome of a targeted 'brand identity' design that connects meaningfully with customers and prospects.

pg. 19

READABILITY

[ree-duh-bil-i-tee], noun; Readability is the ease with which a reader can understand a written text. The readability of text depends on its content (the complexity of its vocabulary and syntax) and typography (font size, line height, and line length). Readability is different from legibility—which is a measure of how easily a reader can distinguish individual letters or characters from each other. Readability can determine the ease with which humans can read computer program code, such as in embedded documentation.

pg. 20

TYPEFACE

[type-face], noun;

In typography, a typeface (also known as font family) is a set of one or more fonts each composed of glyphs that share common design features. Each font of a typeface has a specific weight, style, condensation, width, slant, italicization, ornamentation, and designer or foundry (and formerly size, in metal fonts). For example, "ITC Garamond Bold Condensed Italic" means the bold, condensed-width, italic version of ITC Garamond, but all are fonts within the same typeface, "ITC Garamond."

pg. 21

140-CHARACTER CULTURE

140-character culture refers to the use of Twitter; an online social networking service that enables users to send and read short messages called tweets. By adding a limit, Twitter encourages its users to keep their messages short and sweet. This prevents the sort of rants we often see on social media about politics or current debates and arguably reflects the current generation who wants what they want immediately.

[kar-act-ur\cul-t-ur], noun;

pg. 22

TYPOGRAPHER [ty-pog-ra-pher], noun;

A typographer can be defined as a person whose job is to choose the style, arrangement, or appearance of printed letters on a page: a person who is skilled in typography. The typographer's job involving the arrangement of type involves selecting typefaces, point size, line length, linespacing (leading), letterspacing (tracking), and adjusting the space within letters pairs (kerning).

pg. 23

LETTERFORM Letterform is a term used especially in typography to mean a letter's shape. "Letterform" is a synonym for glyph, which is a specific, concrete way of writing an abstract character or grapheme.

[let-er-fawrm], noun;

In one sense, letterform applies strictly to the design of individual letters. In typography, "letterforms" is often used to describe the study and design of individual letters while typography applies to the design and use with letterforms.

As such, "letterform" applies not only to letters but to any graphic elements of a script, typeface or font.
