The LINC is a high school in North Philadelphia that has adopted a project-based learning environment. According to PBLworks, Project-based learning is a student-centered pedagogy that involves a dynamic classroom approach in which it is believed that students acquire a deeper knowledge through active exploration of real-world challenges and problems. Students learn about a subject by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a complex question, challenge, or problem. It is a style of active learning and inquiry-based learning.

After working on hard news stories about female business owners in Philadelphia, the students were given a more creative assignment. Mr. Deutsch’s class is studying democracy and the variety of things that are affected by government. Students have split into groups depending on their interests to produce a visual record of their experiences with democracy. One group is discussing immigration, an individual is creating art about homelessness, and two are creating a video about registering to vote. This project is partnering with National Geographic for their student-driven campaign titled Our Democracy.

Seniors brainstorm ideas for a video they hope to make about voting and registering to vote at eighteen years old. They intend to approach classmates in the hallways and interview them about voting. The two want to put a comedic spin to their video. Although the students are given strict guidelines for video editing, they have smaller projects where they are allowed to be more creative.

The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character, that is the goal of true education. -Martin Luther King, Jr. 13
