Johannes Seibeb I’ve lived in D.C. since Jnauray 1986. I went to howard for Medical Technology. I worked at Howard University Hospital and I just recently retired. I love it here. My daughter grew up here. We came from Africa when my daughter was two years old. i feel good that I raised her here. I have a love for the culture of D.C. I can speak German, dutch, Italian. When i was 21 years old I went on an italian ship to Germny. I love that there are so many people here who speak different languages. I can communicate with most everyone that comes to this city. I came by plane, I didn’t know D.C. I came to Howard and they put me in a dorm. This Howard theatre was down when I came, but they just renovated it about five years ago. D.C. has changed a lot since i came here. I used to walk downtown often but now when I go I see all new buildings. I am happy for this city; they cleaned it up.

Fran Abrams

Im Fran Abrams, president of the Foundry Gallery. We’ve been around for 45 years. We are an artist cooperative gallery which means that we run the gallery together and we rent a space. Just about a year ago we moved to shaw and opened our new space. It has been extremely successful because Shaw has been the new happening place. There are a lot of people looking for things to do in Shaw every night. The art scene in DC is limited to certain neighborhoods and Shaw happens to be one of them. There are certain neighborhoods in D.C. where culture tends to gather.

There are a number of other performance venues around here with many opportunities to participate in culture. D.C. is a highly cultured area with galleries in every quadrant of the city. The interesting thing is that Foundry Gallery has been in business for forty five years and this is our fourth location. We’ve tried in a sense to follow some of the more happening places and follow where there is more culture. As an artist-run cooperative we are still concerned with selling our own artwork and so we try to be at the right places at the right time and that’s what we are hoping to achieve in Shaw.

Washington D.C. is home to many artists who make a living off of their artwork. The art scene in D.C. is prevelant, something that many people do not know about in other parts of the country.
