A BRIEF HISTORY Founded October 12, 1896, as the Alabama Girls’ Industrial School. Women studied to be teachers, bookkeepers, artists, musicians, dressmakers, milliners and telegraphers.
In 1923, the school became Alabama College, State College for Women, a degree-granting institution. The college became co-ed in 1956, and by the end of that year 35 men were enrolled. In 1969, the school changed its name to the University of Montevallo. It also established four distinct colleges: Arts and Sciences, Education, Business and Fine Arts.
