COLLECTION
CONTRIBUTERS THE PRODUCE
Families, mostly families with kids between 4 and 12, who are environmentally conscious and want to learn more about food production are invited to supply a pig with their organic waste in addition to a small service fee.
At the end of the year the families will receive their share of delicious home fed, local pig meat.

The organic waste is delivered to the pigs using a customized bike cart provided by PigBack, the fence will have a chute to make the feeding of the pigs extra easy.
Rain water is collectded from the rooftops on site.

WATER SUPPLY:
HANNA - THE IDEOLOGIST Right now food is produced on farmlands outside the city to be transported into our homes, where we dispose of our after dinner leftovers by putting them in the trash. This creates a linear system in which the farmer needs to use artificial fertilizer and organic waste piles up in the city. The least we can try to do is create a circular system in which the organic waste is used, and pigs can help us with that, because pigs eat almost everything! The circle is created by getting local families to bring their leftovers to an empty lot in the city used as a piggery to feed the pigs. In return they get some of the pig meat when the pig is slaughtered at the end of the year.

An app that live streams the different pig lots will be launched. In this way the families can see how their pig is doing, a great way for kids to get in touch with their food.

The families collect their organic waste in degradable bags edible for pigs. These bags are made of corn starch (comes from corn stalks) and pectin (extracted from citrus peels) and are sold by PigBack. They cooperate to transport their waste to the pigs.

CORNÉ -THE ENVIRONMENTALIST Global warming is creating more and bigger storms here in Copenhagen, and the sewer system can’t deal with it anymore, causing basements to flood. If we can get rid of some of the water locally, we will take some of the sewer system’s pressure off. So what we do is get the water of the surrounding rooftops into the pig’s lot. We collect it in a tank, use it to supply the pig with drinkwater and a mudbath (did you know they need their mudbaths to cool off because they can’t sweat) and let the leftover water infiltrate in the unpaved lot.
SIMON - THE REALIST Pigs are a bit messy, when you’ve kept them on a lot for a year, you can’t use that lot for pig farming in the next 2 years. That’s why we’re looking for lots that are temporarily empty, moving around to find new lots every year to provide different families with cheap, sustainable pig meat. A quick search of central Copenhagen already provided us with 19 potential piggery locations, so more than enough opportunity to get some pigs into otherwise boring spots.
