EXPLORE HANOVER Hanover Area History Museum The Hanover Area Historical Society’s History Museum is wrapping up its first successful year open to the public. The responses from the visitors, from comments left in our guest book, to the hundreds of large and small exhibits, have been overwhelmingly positive.

The Hanover Area History Museum is sure to have something of interest for everyone. Museum hours are Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. and Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. Other times are available by appointment. Speaking of the educational component of our museum is the Touchscreen© monitor in Gallery 2. Despite the space of the museum, most of the research into the exhibits did not make it onto the exhibit panels. The rest of the information was loaded onto the Touchscreen© and the visitor can access it there. At present, the number of topics on the touch screen is limited and more is being prepared to be loaded in the near future.

Hanover Fire Museum The Hanover Fire Museum offers a plethora of memorabilia and firefighting apparatuses to showcase the history of the Hanover Area Fire Services. Visitors can see how technology has advanced from hand-drawn carts and pumps to motorized equipment through both hands-on and informational exhibits. All featured equipment is authentic and has served the greater Hanover area throughout the past two centuries. Tours are available every Wednesday and the first and third Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Private tours can be requested via phone. 134 E. Hanover St. | (717) 637-6671

Our museum is located in the former carriage house of the Warehime/Myers Mansion. We were fortunate to design and build the museum in an intact architectural 1913 time capsule. With only minimal restoration done in 2017 everything you will see is still the original 109 year old building.

The mansion was built between 1911 and 1913 for C.N. Myers, the co-owner of Hanover Shoe Company. The house was purchased by William Warehime in 1997 and donated to the Hanover Historical Society in 2007. The house is beautifully furnished with a variety of antiques and includes 13 rooms, 3 baths, as well as a kitchen, solarium, and carriage house. Tours must be scheduled via phone. Heart of Hanover Trail Heart of Hanover Walking Trail is presented by Main

Street Hanover, Inc. with support from local historians, writers, the Guthrie Memorial Public Library, and Hanover Area Historical Society. If you are a history buff then Hanover should be a must-stop place for you. Hanover has a storied Civil War history, which is included in Civil War Trails. You can visit this website for more information regarding those markers at pacivilwartrails.com. In addition, Hanover is a proud town that has many stories to tell. Some of those stories are now being told through the Heart of Hanover Trails, which tells the history and compelling stories that unfolded in Hanover. Whether you are coming from Gettysburg, or stopping here on your way to the battlefield, you will not be disappointed in adding Hanover as a history spot to your trip. Enjoy a lunch and beer at one of our many restaurants and breweries as you take a break after taking in all the history that surrounds you.

The Heart of Hanover Trail is a walking tour that includes wayside markers along the way that tell various stories about the Hanover community. You can find examples of the wayside markers above and to the right, Hanover's Underground Railroad Conductors and Trailblazing Writers Leader, Long, and Prowell. While some markers connect to the Battle of Hanover and the Civil War, others tell different stories of Hanover that might not be known to all. The wayside markers began being placed in late 2021, and will finish being placed in early 2022. Once the markers are in place, you will be able to find all this information and a map on Main Street Hanover's website: mainstreethanover.org. We encourage you to use local historical resources when visiting to learn even more about the history of Hanover. Resources include the Hanover Area Historical Society and the Guthrie Memorial Library, both of these places are crucial to helping tell the story of Hanover. The Heart of Hanover Trail was funded by Explore York, through the York County Tourism Grant. Main Street Hanover implemented the project working with a host of historians, native Hanoverian Matthew Jackson served as chief editor. Hanover’s L2 Brands, under the leadership of Brandon Wingert, provided support and design services. The markers are being installed by Hopewell Manufacturing with support from the Hanover Borough Public Works Department. For updated information about the trail, follow Main Street Hanover on Facebook and visit their website at mainstreethanover.org. CREATING AN EXPERIENCE IN DOWNTOWN HANOVER Hanover is continuing its renaissance

with the renovations of several key buildings in the community. If it has been a while since your last visit, you may be surprised to see all the exciting changes coming to fruition. If it is your first time visiting, you simply get to enjoy all the hard work and try out all the new places the Hanover community has welcomed over the past several years. Readers who checked out the 2021 edition of Discover Hanover magazine will be happy to learn businesses mentioned in a feature article are now open and waiting for you to visit. McAllister's on York is officially open, as is, Fat Bat Brewing Company. While some projects have reached their completion, others are still being worked on and the community is patiently awaiting their exciting arrival. The hard work of everyone associated with these projects, and the businesses in the community who have remained dedicated to Hanover, has given our town the perfect opportunity to offer a full experience for all visitors to the area. Upcoming, there will be even more to experience.

McAllister's on York is now open! The grand opening took place in November 2021. This new space creates an upscale dining experience right in Downtown Hanover. Jordan Ilyes, owner of the McAllister Hotel and local developer, teamed up with Robert Godfrey and Andrew D'Angenia, owners of the Handsome Cab in York, to bring this dining experience to life. Ikigai Coffee, located in the basement of the McAllister has become a fan favorite for coffee lovers since it opened in 2020. You can find out more about this coffee shop on page 26.

40 Broadway

Head to Fat Bat Brewing Company now to grab a beer! This place is quickly becoming a favorite for local craft beer drinkers. Fat Bat Brewing Company provides you a variety of craft beers to choose from. Also located at 40 Broadway in the front location will be the coming soon, Oakwood Kitchen. The plans for this restaurant include an upscale dining experience brought to you by the group behind Artisans & Oak, a wood-fired pizza restaurant located in The Markets at Hanover. No opening date has been released, but Hanover will be ready to welcome this restaurant when the doors open.

The State Theater started operating in 1928 and became a landmark in Hanover for over 60 years until it closed in 1986. As many beloved historic locations go, various ideas were brought to the table to bring this building back to life. The future plans belong to the same group who partnered on the renovation of the McAllister Hotel mentioned above. This group plans to reimagine the space of the theater and turn it into a multi-use entertainment space.

This property is the former Montgomery Ward building. In 2018, the property received a $1.4 million redevelopment grant secured through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program. The plans for the building include luxury apartments, a mixed-use commercial space, alfresco dining, and a pedestrian space in the alley. A completion date is not available at this time.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT College and career ready—this is the goal of the Hanover Chamber’s Workforce Development Program Noting the need for a talented and competitive workforce, the chamber set out to educate and develop the future workforce over 15 years ago. The program has since grown to be widely successful, thanks to partnerships with local schools, businesses, and manufacturers. Our program allows the area's future workforce to learn about job opportunities in their hometown. Skilled employees are needed in key areas, including welding, industrial maintenance, quality control, physics, electronics, and more. Bridging the gap between young talent and local businesses, our program allows both parties access to each other in an effort to fill jobs.

GROUP MODEL APPRENTICESHIP

In 2017, the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce became the first chamber in Pennsylvania to submit a Chamber Apprenticeship Model that was approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. By design, the non-joint group model allows the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce the ability to provide guidance and connectivity among local businesses, schools, and other workforce entities. The model began when four companies (Elsner Engineering Works, Inc., KLK Welding, R.H. Sheppard Co, Inc. and Utz Brands) joined together, deciding it was time to build Hanover’s own talent pipeline as these companies would experience a 45% turnover in skilled trade positions by 2025. The program has allowed students from our surrounding high schools the opportunity to begin as a pre-apprentice in their junior year. The program is structured around their high school curriculum and is designed to prepare students to enter and succeed into an apprenticeship program with industry certified credentialing. Upon graduation, and through the completion of the pre-apprentice program, they can join a paid apprenticeship with one of our industry partners.

Since its inception, our apprenticeship program has grown to include three educational partners (South Western Senior High School, Hanover Public School District and Conewago Valley School District) and nine workforce partners, with the ability to add additional partners and occupations to best serve the needs of our business community. We currently have the following occupations registered with Labor and Industry: welding, mechatronics and machining. We are engaged in conversations with local employers to expand into healthcare and construction.

WORKPATH

The WorkPath program started in York County in October 2019, through a dynamic partnership between the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce, South Central PA Works, Manpower, Goodwill Industries, and The Manufacturer’s Association. The program offers adult learners their choice of an introduction to Manufacturing or Logistics.
