I am thrilled to be part of the creation of 2025’s edition of Discover Hanover® Magazine! While this marks my second year as Editor-inChief of the publication, it will be the magazine’s 17th edition, and I think this one just might be the best one yet.

Discover Hanover® Magazine serves as a guide for visitors so they can confidently navigate the best of Hanover, Pennsylvania. It is my hope that newcomers to Hanover will open this publication and quickly learn that Hanover and York County is a top Pennsylvania destination!

In early 2024, Greer’s Burger Garage opened in Downtown Hanover, offering a modern twist on retro dining with freshly made smash burgers and signature entrees.

For cafe-style food, Sallies & Sammies in Stonegate Square is the go-to spot for delicious salads and sandwiches, with topnotch catering services.

Dolphin & Anchor Brewpub, a new addition to Center Square, is the second location for Aldus Brewing Company, bringing their popular brews to downtown.

Hanover also welcomed Little Fox Coffee and Books to Broadway, a new bookstore and coffee shop that retains the charm of Reader’s Cafe while offering a fresh cafe experience with Seattle-sourced coffee and great books.

Another fnew addition to Hanover is The Acai Spot. The Acai Spot, which features acai bowls, smoothie bowls, smoothies, and juices, perfect for a summer day.

New to Hanover’s Downtown is GrillRilla. GrillRilla is a popular food option among the Hanover community and they are moving their delicious culinary creations to downtown on Chestnut Street.

Golfers rejoice! You can now stay at the top of your game year-round by playing at The Golf Loft. The Golf Loft, just a few steps away from Center Square, is an indoor golf facility with state-of-the-art golf simulation bays. It is a great option for experts as well as beginners. Furthermore, they are located above Fat Bat Brewery and guests are able to have food and drinks delivered directly to their bay.

EDUCATION

Recently, the Hanover Area Historical Society (HAHS) relocated and opened the Hormel History & Research Center. The center is located at the Guthrie Memorial Library and is home to the Yelland Research & Library Archives and the Photo Department.

With the addition of the Hormel History & Research Center, the community has access to historical collections and archives in hopes that Hanover’s history can be learned about and enjoyed for years to come.

The Utz Story begins in a small town kitchen in 1921. William and Salie Utz began producing Hanover Home Brand Potato Chips in Hanover, PA, in their summer kitchen, cooking about 50 pounds of chips an hour. They sold those fresh chips to small local grocers and markets, primarily in the Baltimore, MD, area.

The flavor spoke for itself, and over 100 years later, the Utz tradition continues with family-crafted snacks with unmistakable flavors.

Did you know Hanover has its very own Arts Guild? The Hanover Area Arts Guild, located downtown, showcases hundreds of artists and holds exhibits year round, free of admission. The work is engaging and celebrates local artists and connects visitors to the physical artwork. The Hanover Area Arts Guild also hosts classes for all ages and ranges of skill. Their dedication to keeping the arts alive in Hanover makes them a must-see stop during your visit!

In the spirit of bringing the arts to Hanover, the Gallery at the Old Post Office also displays artwork and different themed exhibits throughout the year. Just as the name suggests, the gallery is located in the atrium of what was once a post office on Broadway. This venue gives an intimate look at Hanover’s local artist’s and it is open to the public during the day with occasional special viewing hours.

CULTURE

The Eichelberger Performing Arts Center is a modern cornerstone of the region’s cultural and artistic landscape with its inception as a performing arts center in 1998. Situated in the heart of Hanover, this historic venue has been a vibrant hub for performing arts since its opening, offering a diverse range of performances catering to audiences of all ages and interests. Known for its rich history in education and philanthropy, the Eichelberger provides a unique and engaging experience for locals and visitors alike.

Exciting new updates accompany the upcoming performing arts season, including a $1 million renovation project that upgraded guest amenities and theater equipment. New, custom seats with increased width, based on the Royal Opera House in London, are included in this upgrade, as well as new carpeting and renovations in the orchestra and balcony areas. A brand new, state-of-the-art

sound system has been installed to enhance the experiences of audiences and performers. What makes the Eichelberger Performing Arts Center special? It’s the role it plays in the community according to David Adler, the center’s executive director. “We’re a fabric of the community in that we embrace the needs of the community,” he says. “We’re the venue for Hanover Symphony Orchestra, the Miss Hanover Area pageant, the Exchange Club of Hanover and the Nutcracker collaboration with the Carroll County Dance Center.”

Not only does the Eichelberger feature a broad range of musical and theatrical touring acts, it does so at affordable prices. “We want to make these experiences more accessible to all, so we’ll sometimes offer experiences at below-market prices,” explains David. Tickets can be purchased online at TheEich.org with minimal ticketing fees.

HISTORY

The Hanover Area Historical Society (HAHS) celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2025. The Society was formed in 1965 by local citizens interested in protecting and promoting the historical heritage of the greater Hanover area. In 1974, the Society purchased and restored the 1783 Neas House, which is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The Society was given the WarehimeMyers Mansion in 2007, and in 2021, they opened the Hanover Area History Museum in the Carriage House behind the Mansion. The Society’s Yelland Research Library and Archives, Office and Photo Department relocated in 2024 to the Hormel History and Research Center in the Guthrie Memorial Library, Hanover’s Public Library.

The Warehime-Myers Mansion offers tours of the historic 1913 neo-classical building from April through October on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The History Museum is open at the same time.

From late December to early January, both buildings have extended hours for the annual Christmas Tree Tours, one of Hanover’s most popular holiday activities. The Neas House hosts several open houses throughout the year.

With the Society’s commitment to preserving the area’s rich heritage and providing resources and tools for historical research, the Yelland Library’s collections include a wide array of documents, maps, photographs and genealogical information related to the Hanover area.

HAHS provides lectures on historical and other topics of interest during the year and holds an annual Easter Egg Hunt on the grounds of the WarehimeMyers Mansion. The lawn of the Neas House is the occasional sight of Civil War encampment reenactments or demonstrations of by-gone crafts and trades. HAHS offers several one-day or multiday bus trips each year to areas of historic and/or cultural interest.

While exploring Hanover, you will notice trail markers like the one above, part of the Heart of Hanover Trail. Presented by Main Street Hanover with support from the Hanover Area Historical Society, Guthrie Memorial Library, and local historians, this interactive experience guides visitors through Hanover’s history.

The trail highlights Hanover’s Civil War connections, economic evolution, and industrial growth. It also leads to key locations like the Neas House, Hanover Market House, and Lincoln Plaque.

The first battle on free soil (U.S. regions in which slavery was prohibited) during the American Civil War occured in Hanover. This battle delayed the Confederates invasion of Hanover. Want to learn how? Take a tour on the Heart of Hanover Trail!

Hanover, known for its history and snack-town roots, also offers plenty for gaming enthusiasts.

Vault Video Games features a wide selection of new, vintage, and retro games for various consoles, along with gaming consoles, collectibles, and sealed products, making it a haven for gamers and collectors.

Let’s Play: Games & Hobbies offers a diverse range of tabletop games, board games, roleplaying games, trading cards, and more. They also provide supplies for painting miniatures and have a dedicated space for group gaming.

Timeline Arcade offers a retro gaming experience with classic arcade favorites. Open to all ages, it’s ideal for kids’ parties or anyone looking to enjoy some games. Patrons can bring their own alcohol from 7 PM until close, which is as late as 2 AM on weekends.

CRAFTS

If you enjoy creating, Hanover offers some great spots to explore.

COB51 Art Studio, located near the center of town, welcomes all ages to create in various mediums with no appointment or sitting fee. Visitors can paint ceramics, make mosaics, create wooden cutouts, or paint canvases. COB51 also offers events, classes, and party bookings.

For a fun, hands-on activity, head to The Candle Studio at Cultivated Essentials Co., where you can make candles in a self-guided, family-friendly setting. Walk-ins are welcome, and parties of six or more can make reservations. Guests can bring their own beer, wine, and snacks while crafting.

MUSIC

Lovers of music have quite a bit to look forward to when visiting Hanover, whether you are a player or a listener.

Link’s Music features a wide range of instruments, from guitars and drums to orchestral strings, as well as professional lighting and amplifiers.

Menchey’s Music Service specializes in musical education, selling and renting instruments for bands and orchestras, guitars, and keyboards, with private lessons available.

For collectors, Whirled Records and Squid Wax offer unique and evolving vinyl collections, perfect for finding new musical gems.

THE HANOVER TROLLEY TRAIL

York County Rail Trail Authority (YCTRA) had recently purchased 8.5 mile of the rail corridor with the goal of converting it into rail trail as part of an expansion of the Hanover Trolley Trail. Our task was to keep the purchased corridor from washing into the Chesapeake Bay.

Phase one of the restoration is now complete. The power of stormwater rushing through the creek channel has now been diverted into over 6 acres of new wetlands.

As the wetlands mature, they will provide numerous benefits including improved water quality, long-term stability, and habitat as well as increased flood storage, infiltration, and nutrient uptake. And as the Hanover Trolley Trail expands east to Spring Grove, trail travelers will be offered a view into this “wet world.”

WHAT’S AHEAD?

Design and environmental permitting are already well underway to construct an additional 0.76 miles of trail – extending the Hanover Trolley Trail to Jacobs Mill Road in Heidelberg Township – and restore nearly another 0.5 miles of Oil Creek. The year 2025 will begin with soliciting bids from contractors for construction of these two projects. Planning and acquisition will continue for a parking lot along RT 116 and a bridge connecting the future lot to the Hanover Trolley Trail.

ON THE WATER

Residents and visitors to Hanover now have new opportunities for kayaking and canoeing. Hanover has long enjoyed kayaking rentals available at Codorus at the AOS Marina, and now the Long Arm Resevoir offers summer time fun out on the water.

The Long Arm Reservoir, having undergone improvements, is now home to a Susquehanna Outfitters location, which will be offering the kayak rentals. An aspect that guests will enjoy is that the reservoir does not permit gasoline powered motors on the water, allowing guests a quiet and serene experience as they paddle. For now, rentals will be open in the summertime and only on Saturdays and Sundays.

GOLFING

There is no shortage of golf courses in the area, so Hanover is the place to be when the warm weather arrives.

Just a couple miles from the heart of Hanover is South Hills Golf Course, while just a bit further into Abbottstown is the Hanover Country Club and The Bridges Golf Course. And in Littlestown, Flatbush Golf Course and Quail Valley Golf Course. Each course boasts their own amenities, restaurants, golf course style, and charm.

A short drive northeast of Hanover, Spring Grove is home to two more golf courses. These are the Hickory Heights Golf Course and Little Creek Golf Course, two venues that are sure to challenge new and seasoned golfers alike!

FAMILY FUN

Hanover offers plenty of outdoor activities for the whole family. Take the kids to Codorus State Park for a day of hiking, picnicking, and fishing at Lake Marburg, or enjoy an overnight camping trip. While swimming is not allowed in the lake, there is a pool with a beautiful view of the water.

For families seeking games and friendly competition, Hickory Falls is a great option. Inside, you’ll find an arcade, playground, minibowling, virtual reality gaming, and laser tag. Outdoors, enjoy an 18-hole mini golf course and a go-kart race track. If the kids enjoy the indoors, The Curious Little Playhouse offers a fun handson play space for children aged one through ten. Whether you’re staying active, enjoying the outdoors, or just having fun, Hanover offers something for everyone.

HEALTHY LIVING

The Hanover Area YMCA is a non-profit dedicated to promoting healthy living and community wellness. It offers a range of programs for all ages, including a fully equipped gym for strength training, a pool for aquatic exercises, sports programs, and more. Recently, their South Hanover location was renovated to further enhance these offerings. The YMCA is also merging with the YWCA Gettysburg and Adams County so that these valu–able services can continue to be accessed throughout the region.

Another wellness option in the Greater Hanover Area is Warehouse Rocks Climbing Gym in Abbottstown. This unique gym provides all the benefits of traditional fitness centers while offering a more adventurous workout. Warehouse Rocks fosters a supportive community, where climbers celebrate each other’s achievements on challenging routes.

PARKS & PLAYGROUNDS

Wirt Park in Hanover has recently undergone revitalization through a collaborative effort between Campbell’s Snacks (Campbell’s Cares), the YWCA of Hanover, and the Hanover Rotary Club. The project included significant upgrades to the playground, bringing it up to modern safety standards.

Many more parks and playgrounds can be enjoyed in and around Hanover. Whether it’s the pickleball courts at Myers Memorial Playground or the sprawling grassy fields at Moul Field, there are plenty of places to take the kids or simply relax on a beautiful day. At the heart of downtown Hanover lies Main Street Hanover (MSH), an accredited community partner of Main Street America. MSH embodies the mission of Main Street America: to foster shared prosperity, build resilient economies, and improve quality of life through place-based economic development and community preservation. This national movement, powered by grassroots leaders and collaborative partners, is transforming downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts across the country—including Hanover.

Hanover is uniquely situated in the corner of York County, bordering Adams County. Its proximity to urban centers like Baltimore and Harrisburg make visiting outside of the town an experience of their own.

On the other side of Hanover, and at the center of York County is York City. York is one of the largest cities in the state and hosts a wide array of activities, restuanrants, shops and markets, and more. Grab a bite to eat at the Central Market House, catch a minor league baseball game at WellSpan Park, home of the York Revolution, or, in the summertime, visit the York State Fair (the country’s first ever fair).

Vineyards is a nice detour from the more populous Hanover and promises a serene atmosphere and a view of the vineyard while you enjoy your wine. And Painted Spring Farm in Spring Grove offers tours of their alpaca farm- a fun opportunity for the whole family.
