Dr. Russell Greenholt accepts the Chairman's Award from Chamber President Gary Laird

The Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce held its Annual Business Awards Ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019 at Bay City Restaurant. The event was presented by APPI Energy, Doceo, and KLK Welding. In addition to naming Educators of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Entrepreneur of the Year, Positive Action Award, and the new Her Traditions Women’s Enrichment Award, the Chamber recognized Kevin Gulden of Utz Quality Foods as Past Chair of the Board; Trista Geeting of Cognitive Health Solutions as Ambassador of the Year, Elizabeth Johnides of the Markets at Hanover with the Community Leader Award; and Dr. Russell Greenholt, retiring superintendent of Conewago Valley School District, with the Chairman’s Award. Competitors from Ability Prosthetics & Orthotics, Inc., three-time winners of the Annual Corporate Challenge, were presented with a trophy for the 2019 event.

The 2019 Educators of the Year, sponsored by 1st Ed Federal Credit Union, included Rachel Berkebile, South Western School District; Lisa Smith, Hanover Public School District; Theresa Smith, St. Joseph Catholic School; Benjamin Louey, Spring Grove Area School District; and Tamela Hall, Conewago Valley School District. Unlike the other awards presented at the Annual Business Award Ceremony, the Chairman’s Award is not presented every year. In fact, the Chairman’s Award has only been awarded three times during the past 13 years. The Chairman’s Award was created in remembrance of Scotty R. Dubbs, former chair of the chamber board of directors and true visionary. An innovator and visionary himself, the 2019 recipient of the prestigious Chairman’s Award is Dr. Russell Greenholt. continued on page 4...

continued from page 1... For 36 years, Dr. Greenholt has served local communities in public education.Under his leadership, Conewago Valley School District coined the phrase “Road to Relevance,” Dr. Greenholt's own plan to establish Conewago Valley School District as a center for educational excellence. Most recently, Dr. Greenholt led the district in creating the Colonial Career and Technology Center (CCTC), a 25,000 square foot facility that mirrors a manufacturing plant. According to the Adams Economic Alliance, the CCTC is being hailed as one of the most innovative vocational facilities in Pennsylvania. The chamber and its members can all agree that Dr. Russell Greenholt has superseded this benchmark during his tenure in public education, and more importantly, as a pillar of the New Oxford and Hanover communities. Several local non-profits partnered with the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce to nominate Elizabeth Johnides for the Community Leader Award. Similar to the Chairman's Award, the Community Leader Award is presented only when recognition is demanded by the actions of an deserving individual in the Hanover community. Event sponsor Ken Kirkpatrick of KLK Welding, Inc. presented the 2019 Communiy Leader Award to Elizabeth Silbaugh Johnides. Liz is a financial advisor who specializes in consulting for retirement plans. In addition, her family owns and operates the Markets at Hanover. Two years ago, Liz and the Markets welcomed the Give Local York team for a non-profit showcase event over lunch. The event went over so well that the planning team chose the Markets at Hanover as the location for the following year’s event—only this time, for the entire day. This opportunity allowed the area non-profits to present to a large audience they would not ordinarly be able to reach on their own. Liz wins this award for this year, and for all the years she's been a part of this community. The endless work she's done to make our community a better place deserves recognition, as she supports local businesses and non-profits all while running a successful, unique, and ever-growing small business of her own.

Dr. Jason Shoe and his wife accept the Small Business of the Year Award

Event sponsor Mike Black, Chief Sales Officer for Doceo, presented the Small Business of the Year Award to Shoe Orthodontics on behalf of Penn National Insurance. The Small Business of the Year is awarded to the business that best exemplifies sound principles of business success, personnel management, and community leadership and service. Changing lives since 2015, Shoe Orthodontics is not your ordinary orthodontist. When you walk into their office, you’ll immediately realize there’s no sterile, dental office feeling; instead, patients are greeted with a space that makes them feel right at home. Much like their office aesthetics, Shoe Orthodontics’ business model is unique too. They firmly believe that patient experience matters just as much as the final result. Patients find their time spent with Shoe Orthodontics to be fun, efficient, and enjoyable, and the confidence they gain from their beautiful smiles is just an added bonus. Event sponsor Thomas Best, Energy Consultant for APPI Energy, presented the Entrepreneur of the Year Award to Paige Wingert, CEO of L2 Brands. The Entrepreneur of the Year is awarded to a member of the Hanover Chamber whose business has been locally established for at least two years. The nominee’s business must be reputable, visible and show the effects of entrepreneurial skill in exemplary management and growth, and the nominee must be the individual responsible for the reputation that distinguishes the business among its competitors. Paige Wingert co-founded Legacy Athletic (now L2 Brands) with his roommate, Mark Landgren, during his last year of law school in 1992. Their apartment-based venture soon consumed more time and passion than law school, and after graduating, Wingert soon realized that his heart was set on pursuing their fledgling business, not practicing law.

Elizabeth Johnides accepts the Community Leader Award

Since 2000, Wingert had served as sole owner and president of the company, guiding it through numerous product and sales channel expansions. In April 2018, Legacy Athletic completed a recapitalization transaction with the goal to merge the company with League Collegiate Outfitters, a Philadelphia-based college apparel company founded in 1992. This merger formed the new

name for the company: L2 Brands. Today, L2 employs over 300 workers in the Hanover area, 40 in Philadelphia and another 450 at their apparel manufacturing facility in El Salvador. Award sponsor Kathy Lucas, Employer Liason for WellSpan Health, presented the Positive Action Award to the H.A.R.T Center. The Positive Action Award is given to an organization or business that positively contributes to meeting the needs of the Hanover region and works together with community members toward a cooperative vision that suggests ways to manage growth. In 1969, a small group of parents with physically, developmentally or mentally challenged children realized that they shared a common vision: all of them wanted to ensure that their children could become productive members of society. It was from this shared vision that the Hanover Adams Rehabilitation and Training Center (H.A.R.T. Center) was founded as a “safe place” where sons and daughters could perform “real work” and earn a real paycheck. Today and for 50 years, The H.A.R.T. Center has stood the test of time, growing from supporting a mere four individuals when the doors first opened to a current enrollment of 135 adults with physical or intellectual disabilities. Their service is no longer limited to subcontract work for local companies, but has expanded to include small group employment, supported community employment placement, and independent competitive placements within community businesses.

Wanda Shaffer, sister of Jody Shaffer, accepts the inaugural Her Traditions Women's Enrichment Award in her sister's absence.

Award sponsor Carolyn Schaefer, former Managing Director of Specialized Banking for York Traditions Bank, presented the inaugural Her Traditions Women’s Enrichment Award to Jody Shaffer of the YWCA of Hanover. New for 2019, the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce collaborated with York Traditions Bank to create the Her Traditions Women’s Enrichment Award. The Hanover area is home to women in a variety of philanthropic, entrepreneurial, and leadership roles. The chamber supports these women and acknowledges the unique challenges they face in everyday life, both in the workplace and in the community. As such, this award recognizes an individual who has enriched the life or lives of women in the greater Hanover area. An alumni of Hanover High School and York College, Shaffer has served as Executive Director of the YWCA Hanover since 2014. Prior to joining the YWCA, she spent 15 years with the Hanover Area YMCA where she served in the roles of COO, Associate Executive Director, and Senior Program Director of Youth and Family. In her five years as leader of the YWCA, Shaffer has been instrumental in turning this vital nonprofit around with her vision and drive. She stabilized the organization, grew the services and staff, and added programs to serve the unique needs of women, such as Girls Loving Life, the Women’s Power Breakfast, and just last month, Emerge - the first ever YWCA Hanover’s Women’s Conference. The chamber would like to thank event sponsors APPI Energy, KLK Welding, Inc., and Doceo, award sponsors Penn National Insurance, WellSpan Health, York Traditions Bank, and 1st Ed Federal Credit Union, and photo sponsor Remembrances by Kevin Photography. Photos from the event can be found on our website.

Ambassador Spotlight

Chamber President Gary Laird and chamber Ambassador Trista Geeting

Chamber Ambassador Trista Geeting was named the 2019 Ambassador of the Year at the chamber's Annual Business Award Ceremony in November. Geeting, an employee of Cognitive Health Solutions, has been on the committee for two years. Tammy Crouse, chair of the ambassador committee, views Geeting with the highest regard, “I have partnered with Trista on many visits to chamber members, and each time she has exhibited her passion for her role as an Ambassador." says Crouse. "She relays with confidence how working together in our community and being a chamber member helps everyone with their respective business in one way or another. She is a truly amazing woman that I am proud to work on the Chamber Ambassador committee, and I’m very thankful to call her my friend." Congratulations to Trista Geeting on this well-deserved award!

Workforce Spotlight

Last month, the chamber supported the launch of Hanover’s latest workforce development initiative, WorkPath. This program aims to create an accessible and accelerated bridge for job seekers to gain skills for high priority positions in the region. A unique facet of the new program is that participants are “prehired” by participating employers. This allows the training to be paid from day one, eliminating the financial barriers which often discourage job seekers from gaining new skills. Employer partners Wabco–an RH Sheppard Company and Schindler Elevator stepped up to the plate to pioneer this effort in partnership with The Manufacturer’s Association and Manpower. Thanks to the generosity of Penn Township Manager Kristina Rogers, participants were able to attend this training locally at Penn Township Emergency Services. After the successful graduation of the pilot class on November 8th, the program now has set its sights on supporting local priority positions in 2020.

HACC Gettysburg Receives Grant for Barley Snyder Unveils Recent Mechatronics Program Renovations to Hanover Office

The HACC foundation recently received a $25,000 grant in support of the Gettysburg Campus Fund for Excellence in Mechatronics. The grant was awarded by The Adams County Community Foundation. The fund for excellence supports the purchase of an additional state-of-the-art robot for the Robotics Lab at the Gettysburg Campus. HACC’s Mechatronics Program provides hands-on experience in programming, maintaining and repairing various electronic, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic equipment. With the addition of industrial robotics classes, the Gettysburg campus will now be able to deliver an associate degree in mechatronics.

Barley Snyder recently held a ribbon cutting and open house to unveil renovations to their downtown Hanover office. With limited space available for future growth, the firm faced a choice: either move to a new location, or undertake an extensive renovation project to remain in the historic, 19th-century building. Six months of extensive renovations later, the firm has committed to stay in its downtown Hanover location with a complete overhaul of its office. Members of the chamber and the community joined Barley Snyder in October to celebrate the work they've completed over the past few months.
