2018 was the year of new things in Hanover—several new businesses opened, a new mayor was appointed for our borough, and a new look for our downtown was crafted, thanks to feedback from the community. How could 2019 top that? Well, we think it just might.

This issue is all about what makes Hanover special; from our snack food industry, to our civil war history, to our 3,500-acre state park, Hanover is a place where history is made, entrepreneurs realize their dreams, and families plant their roots, generation after generation. And while we are known for all of those qualities, there is still so much that people don’t know about Hanover— hidden gems, if you will.

Did you know that you can ask for your beer "to-go" at any brewery in the Hanover Borough? Or how about the fact that Hanover houses Pennsylvania’s largest arcade? Or that we have spots to ice skate in the winter and mountain bike in the summer? Yep, we're all that and a bag of chips—or pretzels! We’ve rounded up all kinds of great things for you, like our top picks on where to visit, eat, shop, and even get married. And of course, we included our regular features too, like our seasonal event calendar and business directory. Our cover features a photograph captured by Kevin Strack of Remembrances by Kevin Photography. We chose this photo because it highlights one of Hanover’s hidden gems: rural areas dark enough that you can see the stars— and occasionally, the Milky Way too! So often, my city-dwelling relatives will visit Hanover and remark at how many stars they see in our sky; it’s a rare thing these days! For more info on our cover spot, turn to Page 12. Cornfusion Corn Maze—September 14-early November Inspired by Aladdin and his magical adventures, Cornfusion, located in Manchester, Maryland, is offering a variety of family fun activities this fall including two corn mazes, a petting zoo, hayrides, pumpkin patches, and so much more! Kim’s Krypt Haunted Mill—September 20–November 3 Home to six terrifying attractions in Spring Grove, Kim’s Krypt Haunted Mill guarantees a chilling experience from start to finish! Wine Tasting on the Hill—September 28-29 Join the West Manheim Township Lions Club and the Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Company for a weekend full of great music and vino! WINTER 2019 Annual Christmas Parade—November 29 Kick off the holiday season in downtown Hanover as Santa journeys toward his new cabin! The parade starts at 9 a.m., allowing plenty of time for a visit with Santa afterward. Santa’s Cabin—November 29–December 23 Come visit one of Hanover’s oldest traditions! With free photos, holiday treats, and a chance to meet the big man himself, a visit to Santa’s cabin will surely bring a smile to your child’s face. Christmas Tree Lighting—November 30 Sip hot cocoa and listen to carolers as Hanover lights the Christmas tree for the holiday season! The ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. Tree Tours at Wareheim Myers Mansion—November 30-January 11 Enjoy over 40 Christmas trees at the Hanover Area Historical Society's Warehime-Myers Mansion. Admission is $5, and children are admitted free with accompanying adults. Cookie Stroll—December 14 Stop by participating downtown stores and restaurants to grab a tasty cookie and shop, just in time for the gift-giving season! The stroll will begin at 1 p.m. and will last until 4 p.m. Tree Wars—December 14–January 3 Downtown businesses compete for the most unique Christmas tree in this festive tradition. Pick up a passport and vote for your favorite entry for a chance to win a prize!

SPRING 2020 St. Patrick's Day Pub Crawl—March 14 Head downtown for the St. Patrick's Day pub crawl! Let your inner leprechaun out while supporting our troops at this fundraising event for For the Love of a Veteran, Inc. Free Rita’s Italian Ice—March 19 Visit Rita’s Ice of Hickory Falls for a free Italian ice on the first day of spring! Paws in the Park Doggy Egg Hunt —April 4 Bring your pooch out to the West Manheim Recreational Park for an adorable Easter egg hunt. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. and ends when all eggs have been collected. Easter Egg Hunt at Codorus State Park—April 10 Codorus State Park will be holding an Easter celebration from 4-5 p.m. near the pavilions in the swimming pool area. Children will love making crafts, hunting for eggs, and meeting the Easter Bunny! Hanover Community Easter Egg Hunt—April 11 Bring the kids for a morning of fun at Moul Field! The egg hunt will begin at 2:30 p.m. A special needs egg hunt will also be held at 12:30 p.m. Memorial Day Parade—May 25 Help honor our veterans by attending Hanover’s Memorial Day Parade! Founded in 1995, the Hanover Symphony Orchestra is dedicated to fostering the love of music through entertainment, encouragement, and education. The group includes nearly 50 local musicians who have a passion for sharing their art. Visit their website for a schedule of events. Love acapella music? Come meet the Hanover Barbershop Chorus, a group of hobby singers dedicated to keeping the barbershop harmony alive! The group started in 1965 and has been happily singing along ever since. Looking to learn the arts? Pennsylvania Theatrical Arts by Brittany Stevens (PATABS) holds classes on vocal instruction, acting and drama, musical theatre, dance, and fitness. The Academy for Media Production (AMP) offers audio, photography, and video production programs. The Hanover Little Theater started in the 1940’s and is celebrating its 70th season this year. The playhouse operates on a four-production schedule each year with tickets costing $15 per person.

FEATURED ON OUR COVER, Long Arm Reservoir is a quiet, peaceful place that locals love. During the day, bring your family for a picnic, watch for various species of birds (including bald eagles), hike along the shore, and even kayak on the water. Long Arm officially closes at night, but taking a drive through the area after dark will allow for some great views of the stars. Those wishing to be on the premises after dark will need to submit a formal request to the Borough of Hanover and can only do so after permission has been granted. The Hanover Geo Trail offers over 20 caches located throughout downtown Hanover, West Manheim Park, and Codorus State Park. INTERNATIONAL EATS 11. Known for hearty, full meals and a classic German atmosphere, the Hofbrauhaus first opened their doors in 1958 and have been serving authentic German food ever since. Downtown Hanover

A HUB FOR HISTORY Hanover may have played a bigger role in the Civil War than most people think. Many know that the turning point for the war happened when General Robert E. Lee failed to gain victory at Gettysburg. However, few realize that perhaps one of the reasons for this Confederate loss was the unplanned battle right here in Hanover. ON JUNE 30, 1863, Jeb Stuart arrived in Hanover after unexpected skirmishes in the Shenandoah Valley. Ordered by General Robert E. Lee to provide intelligence about the Union’s movements, Stuart made his way north from Virginia but was widely detoured due to the presence of Federal forces along the way. Once in Hanover, Stuart realized he was not alone; both Maj. Gen. Judson Kilpatrick and George Armstrong Custer were already in town. Battle quickly broke out as the 13th Virginia and 2nd North Carolina Calvary attacked Union horsemen on Frederick Street. The Union army took hold, preparing a counterattack from their position on Broadway. Ultimately the Battle of Hanover delayed Stuart, causing him to track north toward Carlisle before arriving to Gettysburg after the battle had already begun. Had he been present during the beginning of the battle, Lee would have had Stuart’s insights and the Confederates may have stood a chance at winning Gettysburg. Check out the Hanover Area Historical Society! The society has three main properties – the Neas House, the Warehime-Myers Mansion and the Yelland Research Library. The Neas House, located at 103 W. Chestnut St., dates to around 1783 and is open for tours from April through October. The Warehime-Myers Mansion, located at 305 Baltimore St., dates to 1911. The mansion features a solarium, fountain, and gazebo. There is even a bowling alley! The Yelland Research Library, located at 21 Baltimore St., features multiple special document collections as well as approximately 800 books about Hanover history. New Civil War Markers for Hanover, PA Main Street Hanover is excited to announce updates to the historic wayside markers around downtown Hanover! Through a partnership with the nationally known Civil War Trails organization, we are excited to put Hanover’s history on the map, inviting visitors following the Gettysburg Campaign from Virginia to Pennsylvania. Additional new markers installed throughout the coming year will be a combination of Civil War Trails markers and locallydesigned markers that will retell stories you know—and some you don’t. Along with new markers, we will be launching a brand-new walking tour. Accessible online through the Main Street Hanover website, and in print at Hanover visitor center sites, this walking tour will show the best walking routes to see all the historic sites in Hanover. Follow along and find inspiration as we detail three "Snack Town" ceremonies filled with local lore and charm.

A big DIY fan, Mattie did her own hair and makeup. Paired with her exquisite dress from David's Bridal, she looked stunning standing next to Josh in his Kohl's tuxedo. The couple’s rings were purchased from Littman Jewelers. Following the ceremony, guests made their way to the reception area adorned with elegant string lights. Boneyard BBQ catered a delicious meal that was finished with cake made by a friend. After eating, guests danced the day away to music provided by Complete Weddings.

Our first featured wedding took place in downtown Hanover on a rainy New Year’s Eve. Photos were taken by My Dear Love Photography as Carolyn and Mike made their way from the Sacred Heart Basilica to the Black Rose Ballroom. After dancing along to Gazze Band, guests enjoyed catering from La Cucina Restaurant and a beautiful cake from Cakes by Susie. Carolyn wore a dazzling dress from Bridal Reloved in Hackney, London with make-up and hair by Josephine Love Bridal. The couple’s rings were purchased from Garrick Jewelers.

Our third and final wedding took place on an autumn day at the Stone Mill 1792, located just outside of Codorus State Park. Photographed by ClaireDenise Photography, Torie and Nick tied the knot with rings purchased from J. Brown Jewelers in Pikesville, Maryland. With hair by Brittany Reidenbach, makeup by Gypsysol Makeup Artistry, and a dress from TLC Bridal Boutique in Frederick, Maryland, Torie looked gorgeous alongside her husband in his Men's Warehouse tux. The reception was catered by Festive Board with a wedding cake from Snickerdoodles in Hampstead, Maryland. Guests enjoyed music from BWG Music & Entertainment as they celebrated with the newlyweds.
