U.S Chamber: 10 Ways Communities, Businesses, and Families Can Improve Resilience

Weather-related catastrophes are increasing in frequency and severity, and billion-dollar disasters are now the norm. In 2022 alone, the cost of natural disasters exceeded $360 billion across the globe, including more than 40 weather events causing over $1 billion in damage each.

A new economic study by Allstate, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation found that every $1 spent on climate resilience and preparedness saves communities $13 in economic impact, damages, and cleanup costs.

Here are a few recommended actions for reducing risk for businesses:

• Make building improvements: These include structural improvements, adjustments based on professional hazard audits, and accessibility updates.

• Plan for the worst-case scenario: Train employees in emergency response and have a business-disaster plan in place.

• Collaborate with community governments: Support the development and strengthening of national and local laws, regulations, policies, and programs.

• Seek out resources and information: Understand what resources are available before a disaster happens, like the U.S. Chamber Foundation’s Readiness for Resiliency program or federal disaster grants.

Local Congressman, Lloyd Smucker: Standing Up For Main Street

Congressman Lloyd Smucker of the 11th District recently released a statement in which he takes a stand for American small businesses and shares his testimonial as a former small-business owner.

" As a former small-business owner, I’ve seen the obstacles business owners face firsthand. That’s why advocating for small businesses matters to me, and I am honored to have the privilege of leading the House Ways and Means Committee’s Main Street Tax Team.

The Ways and Means Committee Republicans are already preparing for 2025, when the provisions of the landmark 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, or TCJA, expire. The TCJA unleashed a robust economy in which small businesses invested in their communities, creating more jobs and economic opportunities. President Biden’s own words

and recent testimony of his administration make clear his desire for the TCJA to expire despite promising not to raise taxes on Americans making less than $400,000. If the individual tax rates in TCJA are allowed to expire, every middle-class American will see a tax increase. It is crucial Congress protect the middle class by preserving the TCJA which will help families, workers, and small businesses struggling in President Biden’s economy.

When small businesses thrive on Main Street, our communities thrive. Advancing pro-growth tax policy is critical to growing the American economy. That’s why I introduced the Main Street Tax Certainty Act, which would make permanent a key provision of the 2017 TCJA that promoted tax parity between small businesses and larger corporations. I am committed to helping small businesses grow, create jobs, and invest in their communities."

Thank you, Congressman Smucker, for speaking up for Main Street and the local businesses that diversify our economy.

New Member Spotlight: The Succulent Hippie

For this month's New Member Spotlight, we are featuring The Succulent Hippie.

"The Succulent Hippie was founded in 2020 by Shannon Petenbrink. The Succulent Hippie started from a curiosity of arrangements of succulents to a passion for houseplants and more.
