South Western High School held their 4th annual Signing Day event on May 1. Over 2,500 high schools across the country held celebrations as a part of former First Lady Michelle Obama's Reach Higher initiative, a national celebration that encourages communities to celebrate students' choices and commitments to continue education after high school. Jon Zimmerman, high school counselor from South Western, recalls the event, "Our event is unique in that we have students that are heading in many different directions after high school. We have students who have committed to four-year colleges, two-year community colleges, trade or technical schools, preapprenticeships, local employment, or military enlistment. Our community is especially strong in preparing students for all of these different pathways, so Signing Day is a way to celebrate that." 60 seniors attended the morning reception and many were presented with a small gift from their future employers, military recruitment office, or post-secondary institution. Chamber Celebrates Hanover Area's Best and Brightest Students
2019 Discover Hanover® Magazine Now Available at the Chamber
The Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with Delone Catholic, Hanover, South Western, New Oxford, and Spring Grove school districts, recognized graduates from the class of 2019 at the annual Best and Brightest Ceremony on Sunday, May 5 at Delone Catholic High School. The chamber would like to thank Elsner Engineering Works for sponsoring this event.
The 11th issue of Discover Hanover® Magazine is now available! Lynneah Smith, Human Resources Manager for Elsner, gave some words of encouragement to upcoming graduates, "No matter where your future takes you, we hope that once you have honed your trades and talents, you will return to the Hanover area to lead the next generation of world class organizations. Just as your parents, teachers, community members and business leaders have helped to create a town that has nurtured your growth into adulthood, so it is your duty to nurture and grow the generations that follow." Justine Trucksess, Manager of Main Street Hanover and 2005 graduate of Delone Catholic High School, was the keynote speaker for the evening. Trucksess shared her path back to Hanover after college, noting how volunteering played a large role in securing her current position, "Because of giving my time, I was able to be in the right place to pursue a passion that has turned out to be such an incredible opportunity. [This job] gives me purpose and allows me to give and serve this community that I love. I feel that my job allows me to continue striving be the servant leader that I admire so much in others. Look to your parents, your teachers, your mentors – you will find the qualities that inspire you and work hard to emulate them," said Trucksess. "Volunteer – serve others. Seek leaders who serve. Find that passion that gives you meaning."
This issue is all about what makes Hanover special; from our snack food industry, to our civil war history, to our 3,500-acre state park, Hanover is a place where history is made, entrepreneurs realize their dreams, and families plant their roots, generation after generation. And while we are known for all of those qualities, there is still so much that people don’t know about Hanover— hidden gems, if you will. Did you know that you can ask for your beer "to-go" at any brewery in the Hanover Borough? Or how about the fact that Hanover houses Pennsylvania’s largest arcade? Or that we have spots to ice skate in the winter and mountain bike in the summer? Yep, we're all that and a bag of chips—or pretzels! Visit the chamber and pick up a copy today to discover all of this and more, like our top picks on where to visit, eat, shop, and even get married. And of course, we included our regular features too, like our seasonal event calendar and business directory. Have questions or comments about this year's issue? Business Program is a Great Opportunity for Local Students and the Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport, PA, serving nearly 2,200 students and 250 volunteers each year.
Winners of BizQuiz, PFEW’s version of Jeopardy, celebrate on a busy Wednesday afternoon!
The chamber proudly supports PFEW and encourages our local companies and civic organizations to provide sponsorship for students and, if possible, volunteers. Every student attends PFEW on a fully tax-deductible $625 scholarship (the actual value of the scholarship exceeds $1,500) which is provided by a local firm, foundation, civic organization, or individual. PFEW is also an approved Educational Improvement Organization through the PA Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program. Scholarship donors are prominently recognized in several publications circulated throughout the state, and each student wears the name of their sponsor on their photo ID badge throughout the week. Students write their sponsors after graduation to report on what they have learned.
There is an award-winning summer economics education program that has benefitted our local students for forty years. Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW) immerses rising high school juniors and seniors in the world of business, allowing them to experience firsthand what you face each day. Offered by the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education, PFEW was founded specifically to teach students about the American private enterprise system and provide tools to help students become the great employees and employers of the future. PFEW annually holds five week-long sessions in July and August on the campuses of Lycoming College
If you would like to learn more about the award-winning PFEW program and how you can help, please contact Scott Lee, Vice President of Marketing & Development for the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education at (814) 833-9576 ext. 8, or e-mail him at scott@pfew.org. Façade Grant Funding Launch
Main Street Hanover recently received funds to open a round of facade projects in downtown Hanover. This program is a great opportunity for anyone within the Main Street District! Storefront improvements do not need to be costly; often, a fresh coat of paint, new sign, awning, lighting fixtures, or flower boxes/planters are all that is needed to refresh a property. Fortunately many commercial buildings in Hanover have retained much of their charming architectural features that originally made them unique. This grant funding enables property owners to reverse alterations that did not preserve the original architectural character of a building, ultimately tying properties in with our historic downtown. The program is a financial incentive to help rehabilitate commercial buildings in Main Street Hanover’s Designated District. Main Street Hanover, in partnership with the Borough of Hanover and the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce, was awarded this grant for a Façade Improvement Program from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Community and Economic Development. Maximum reimbursement includes $5,000 per commercial property per project, and must be matched dollar-for-dollar by the applicant. Projects must be paid for by property owner or business tenant at the time the work is completed, and the façade grant funds will come as a reimbursement for that project. Main Street Hanover was awarded $50,000 in grant funds to give away in this round of funding. Applications are available for download on our website, www.mainstreethanover.org. Applications submitted after May 31 will be accepted on a rolling basis. Submit your application via email to Justine Trucksess at jtrucksess@mainstreethanover.org or in person at the Main Street Office - 146 Carlisle St., Hanover, PA (also the Hanover Chamber Office).
