A Letter from the President

2017-2018 has been an incredibly productive year at the Chamber. Your membership is vital to accomplishing the many important services that we provide. As we begin the new fiscal year, we pause to reflect on our accomplishments over the past year. Economic Development We continue to expand our role in economic development through our work with Main Street Hanover (MSH), with a focus on organizational development and financial sustainability as MSH enters its sixth year. The Hanover Area Apprenticeship Program continues to grow as two new business partners were added in 2018 and three school districts are now supporting the program. Through the apprenticeship program, high school students have the opportunity to begin as a pre-apprentice in their junior year, with the program structured around their high school curriculum and work within one of the participating companies. Upon graduation, students have the opportunity to complete a two-year, paid apprenticeship within a participating company. In 2018, the Chamber secured approximately $180,000 in grants to offset startup costs associated with the apprenticeship program. The chamber launched its brand new tourism brand, Discover HanoverÂŽ this year. This new brand will be nationally recognized, thanks to our partnerships with local CVBs in York and Adams counties. With this new brand, we've created a logo, website, brochure, and more, all to market Hanover as a destination for visitors and locals to dine, shop, and play. Also part of our new brand, our annual magazine, Discover HanoverÂŽ, celebrated its 10th anniversary this year. We increased our printing to 22,000 copies, adding New Jersey to our distribution list. Distribution will increase again in 2019, placing our magazine in five states across the region.

Ad sales for 2019 have already begun; if you are interested in being a part of this local and regional publication, please contact Emily Freiert at efreiert@hanoverchamber.com. Leadership In April, we graduated 16 local business men and women from our Leadership Hanover Program. 2018 was the largest class in the six-year history of the program. We look forward to seeing this year's graduates take on leadership roles within our community. Membership In the past year we have welcomed 39 new members and had a member retention rate of 93%. Our staff and volunteers strive to deliver value to our members by hosting networking and community events, offering affordable marketing and advertising opportunities, and advancing the interests of the Hanover business community. If you would like to learn more about the Chamber's goals for the coming year, we invite you to join us at our Annual Meeting at 12 p.m. on October 18 at the Guthrie Memorial Library. The event is complimentary and open to all members. A light lunch will be served. To register, please visit our website. I thank you for your continued confidence in the work of your Chamber; we truly value your support. If you ever have a question about how we can help your business or organization, please contact us. We welcome the opportunity to serve the needs of our members and the community. Sincerely,

Gary M. Laird President

New HR Seminar Series: Tools to Address HR Issues

by Leslie Elsner Bell, Executive Director, Granite HR Consulting, LLC Does your organization have a workforce that spans several generations? Do you have Generation X managing Baby Boomers, or the opposite? Are you wondering how to keep Generation Y engaged with your company now that they’ve learned the ropes and are contributing? Once a manager has successfully hired (that is, attracted) that hard-to-find candidate, the next challenge is motivating and retaining that talent.

Of course, once an organization has clear communication and a positive environment, the work isn’t done. It’s imperative to build retention strategies that go beyond employee recognition programs, competitive wages and benefits, and clear performance expectations and feedback at regular intervals. To clearly demonstrate your company supports and values professional development, you should provide employees with ongoing opportunities to learn and grow. Every business is different, but the fundamentals of employee motivation and retention are constant. When a business gets these right, turnover and the “revolving door” that had key employees coming and going constantly is a challenge of the past.

As we discussed in our August article on recruiting and our September article on coaching, counseling, and disciplinary action, To understand how to retain good employees and keep them motivated, please join us for EMPLOYEE RETENTION, the employment issues are an ongoing challenge for every business. third of three HR seminars on Tools to Address HR Issues, Nov. Prepare for the upcoming election and meet local legislators at our next Legislative Roundtable! Chamber Legislative Roundtables are held quarterly on the FIRST Friday of the month at 7:30 a.m. at Dutch Country Restaurant. Please join us for the final roundtable of 2018 on Friday, November 2. Please note, we have a new format for our roundtables! As the chamber continues to develop a legislative scorecard, we have restructured our roundtables to focus on issues and legislation that is of upmost importance to the Hanover business community. Throughout the coming year, we will continue to follow up with our local legislators to ensure that the voices of the business community are heard.

You can expect to see a scorecard (similar to a report card) of votes which we will track based on issues chosen by chamber members in early 2019. To stay up-to-date, consider joining us at the November Legislative Roundtable. Can’t make it? Make sure to subscribe to the chamber’s digital “Chamber Insider” newsletter, a quarterly brief sent straight to your inbox regarding the topics that matter most to Hanover. Hanover Valley Presbyterian Church (HVPC) is celebrating its 20th anniversary in Hanover this year! HVPC’s mission is to be a church that not only is in Hanover, but a church that is for Hanover. Over the past 20 years, HVPC has certainly lived up to that philosophy, whether that means hosting countless community events, serving on boards, or opening their doors to the public in times of need. Some events they host include the community Christmas Eve service at the Eichelberger Performing Arts Center each year, regular service at the Changing Lives Shelter, and most wellknown, Kids Fest, an annual week-long children’s day camp program. The chamber would like to thank HVPC for their devotion to the Hanover area.

Christmas is Coming!

We are asking for your donation to support the Christmas activities in Hanover, including maintenance of the new Santa's Cabin! Visiting 'the Cabin', our historically traditional Hanover landmark, has been a cherished holiday activity for 80 years. As hard as it was to admit, our beloved Santa's Cabin was in a state of great disrepair, and last year it welcomed its last visitors. We have received an outpouring of support to keep this tradition alive and build a new Santa Cabin that will last another 80 years! Thanks to a generous donation from the Eagles Club, we are excited to have a new cabin for this year. We are now looking to raise funds to decorate and maintain the cabin year after year, pay for the Christmas decorations hung on the lights throughout town, and bring new and exciting holiday events to Hanover! The Borough of Hanover, Hanover's Christmas Committee, and Main Street Hanover and its partners are raising funds to build the Christmas activities and Cabin maintenance fund in Hanover. No tax-payer money will be used in the building of this cabin, the decorating of the town, or the Christmas activities. It is up to our community to support this effort. We are looking to our local business community to help us afford such great expenses. Any amount is greatly appreciated and will help to keep our community traditions alive this Christmas! If you are unable to make a contribution, we invite you to participate in other ways, like volunteering at the cabin, participating in the parade, or joining the planning effort. To give, please make checks out to Main Street Hanover, Inc. and mail to 146 Carlisle St., Hanover, PA 17331, with "Christmas Fund" in memo line. If you would like to learn more about the work of Main Street Hanover, follow us on Facebook or contact us at 717-637-6130 x101 or jtrucksess@ycea-pa.org
