EDITOR’S NOTE With the new season of fall winter creeping in before th last hot loo of August, I love noticing how people change their decor, be it a teenager in a hostel, a hot and heavy mumbaikar or a winter dreading canadian... everyone changes their rooms and their homes to “fall decor” and for someone who is surrounded by beautiful decor all the time I sometimes tend to forget why people do it, do they do it to show how abreast they are with the trends of decor, to show social status, to want to express creativity somewhere, to not be bored, the list goes on, but the simplest answer is: we love beautiful things, our ideologies of beauty might be quiet different but we love to surround ourvselves with beautiful things and as seasons fade we simply look for excuses to change things up because our eyes seek for aomething newer to look at to live with.

On the same note I’d like to introduce the bath edition, with home decor people always tend to decorate exteriors of their homes and tend to forget the bathroom. I’ve noticed even in very well furnished homes that people tend to not give much attention to the bathroom, but trust me it’s as important as your living room,

Geometry of bathing

Searching for some Asian influence in your bathroom? A Japanese soaking tub is a small, deep bath that has become the new “rave” among bath fixtures. All Japanese soaking tubs & baths are fabricated with a bench seat – providing you the ultimate in bathing comfort. Japanese soaking tub and bath options have luring effects on Zen enthusiasts, a sincere tribute to the Feng Shui spirit. The traditional Japanese tub is gaining popularity worldwide by those who take great care of their health and beauty. Ofuro, which means “bath’ in Japanese has always had significant importance in the Japanese culture to cleanse the body and the soul. This cleansing ritual from its origination was to place as much of the body under the water as possible to completely cleanse the body. You will notice the depth of the it is very deep, to easily submerge the entire body up to the neck while sitting in an upright position as tradition would have it. POP Colour

White may be the most popular (and perhaps safest) choice when it comes to bathroom colors, but it certainly isn’t the only option. Bright and bold shades can add life—and major style—to a bath, whether you use strategic pops of color or add an entire rainbow’s worth. There a number of vibrant ways to amp up the energy in your bathroom, whether you’re looking for an easy update or are undergoing a full renovation. For a quick change, consider painting the walls (or ceiling) a bright hue. For a home in the Adirondacks, Thom Filicia used red and navy paint to invigorate a guest bath, while Jamie Drake applied a pretty pink to the walls of a Manhattan bathroom. Wallpaper can add pattern to a bland bathroom and works particularly well in small spaces such as powder rooms. Designer Katie Ridder used one of her own wallpapers in the powder room of her Millbrook, New York, home, and Bunny Williams used a traditional motif to add elegance to a Richmond, Virginia, bathroom. If you’re ready to a top-to-bottom renovation, colored tile can help a space stand out. The Campana brothers used red mosaic tile on nearly every surface of a bathroom in a São Paulo home, while Kelly Wearstler made a splash with pink, black, and white marble inlaid walls at a Beverly Hills house. In a Manhattan bathroom, Rockwell Group kept the space sleek and unadorned except for a single wall of gold mosaic tile. Bathrooms that feature vivid wall paint, splashy mosaic tile, and eye-catching patterns in shades ranging from soothing pastels to daring jewel tones to adventurous primaries. Find ideas for your own bath designs in these lively, inspiring spaces that will make you want to leave white behind. If your home decor suits the pop of colour theme doing it with either a statemnt tub or fancy tiles is the best way to go. Consider this for the kid’s bathroom if it’s too loud or playful for your own bath.

White is so yesterday. Catch up with the times and take a bold step with these punchy palettes for your washroom. Anything but ordinary, these schemes will raise eyebrows and drop jaws for a good reason while making your bathroom look fresh and different enough to make you want to never leave the bathroom in the morning. 1. Coal black Create a savvy washroom in all black as seen in this sophisticated washroom designed by Studio BRIO. Grey diamond patterned limestone flooring complements the cement epoxy partitions by Pandomo from Greenheart Floors – perfect for shutting the world out and bringing a piece of stone and nature right under your roof. UNIQUE COLOURS FOR 2. Asian red Introduce an eastern zen inspired atmosphere with pleasing red just like Sonali Purewal did in this washroom for a New Delhi loft. The waterfall faucet coupled with bamboo blinds lends a soothing organic vibe. Don’t miss the TS Eliot poem scripted on the wall that strikes a chord on a spiritual level. 3. Tropical green If you are a nature lover, you will love bathing against the verdant hues of a rainforest. To create

A BATHROOM FACELIFT a feeling of lush foliage, pick a deep green hue for the walls. If you want to amp up the jungle fever, get creative with animal shaped organisers, stone accents and bark textured storage shelves. 4. Sandy ochre Embrace sunshine hues on walls with cues from this lively washroom in John and Faith Singh’s rustic Jaipur house. Match this shade with beach blue for windows, doors and panels and perhaps add some indoor plants to give off relaxing vacation vibes.

5. Waterfall blue Capture the energy of running water bodies just as Isla Maria Van Damme achieved with tones of azure in this Goan pool house by Mandira and Sumeet Nath. The wall and floor panels have been designed by Lou Lou for Bharat Floorings and Tiles while the shower fittings are from Grohe. Experimenting with the bathroom makes the house go from basicto wow because many people forget to design their bathrooms just as well as the rest of the house, they tend to just go along with the simple classics, but why? With this month’s issue do consider to pay more attention to that little room that welcomes you first thing every morning... Aug- Sept 2018 Casa Decor 21

xclusive interview and tour to rfan Khan’s Bohemian abode

“The jhoola is a must,” Irrfan says, as he stops by a swing. He confesses to a mirror fetish?”I always peer into them even if I’m walking by in a hurry”?dating back to well before he considered becoming an actor, and this house fulfils one of his longest-held fantasies. “I finally have an area surrounded by mirrors, where I can see myself from every angle.” The swing is the first thing you will notice in the living room. A two-seater, it has a plank the size of an open newspaper, and hangs from dark-green ropes—the ornate, thick kind that could hold open a stage curtain, or disallow entry at a discotheque. Embellished with floral motifs, sculptures, decorative frames, intricate art and traditional furniture – this home has a delightful other-worldly quality to it. It is filled with detailed accessories and drenched in rich blue, green and grey hues. “Irrfan Khan and Sutapa Sikdar wanted a place that is welcoming and one that makes you forget about the outside. They wanted to create a world of their own within this chaotic city of Mumbai, where they could be connected with everything, yet stay away from the noise,” says Shabnam Gupta of Mumbai-based The Orange Lane. This fifth-floor apartment opens to a vast living room. The space is flooded with natural light through full-length glass windows. On the left, as one enters, is the dining room and four other rooms – one with an attached study, belonging to Irrfan, the other to Sutapa and the third and fourth respectively, to their sons. All rooms have attached bathrooms. “Our aim was to design each space as a representation of its inhabitant’s distinct personality. We also wanted to bring in a seamless connection with the public spaces,” Gupta says. The colour palate of the living area is vibrant with the use of blues and greens on a backdrop of grey. “The living room, inspired by garden spaces, has an exposed ceiling with a floral light installation that almost looks as if a creeper has naturally clung to the slab and spread across the expanse. A deep-blue waterbody, with the gentle sound of water overflowing from the urn placed at the centre adds a sense of serenity of the space,” Gupta says. Aug- Sept 2018 Casa Decor 23

“It is important for me to have a water body,” Irrfan explains, passionately (and oddly) specific, pointing to something that looks like a Turkish bathtub, a square of blue stone. “It has to have its own ecosystem, survive on its own. That fascinates me. That the fishes don’t have to be given oxygen separately, that the water doesn’t have to be cleaned or changed.” The living room is like a sanctum of detailed Indian artwork and aesthetic. Inspired by garden-spaces, it has an exposed ceiling with a poetic floral light installation that almost makes it seem like a creeper is naturally clung to the slab and spread across the expanse. A deep blue Turkish bath tub, with the gentle sound of water overflowing from the urn placed at the centre, adds to the serenity of this space. The long balcony enclosing the living room from three sides, are filled with tall greens acting as partition screens. The space speaks the story of a journey, each piece of furniture and artefact collected lovingly over a long span of time and displayed with great elegance. Aug- Sept 2018 Casa Decor 25

He confesses to a mirror fetish, and it can be clearly seen in his dining area, bathed in whites and blues. The blues are extended into his dining space as well. There’s a calming yet bohemian feel to this entire place. The dining room is more stately and formal, with a panelled wall inset with mirrors along one side. A hand carved console and lots of light soften the space, making it a royal yet warm place to enjoy a meal. On the left of the living room lies the dining area with a flooring of polished, sea-green river wash stone that continues through the rest of the house. “We have designed this as a more stately and formal space,” Gupta says. While rich blues are echoed in the upholstery of the chairs, the reigning hue is a quiet shade of white, lifted by warm notes of brown wood and a cluster of sharply styled black wire lamps suspended above the table. The wall inset of panelled mirrors, which was built on site, brightens and expands the room. A second inset of windows opens into the living area, connecting the two spaces.

Irrfan’s bedroom is a multi-lateral combination of spaces – a tall library wall, a comfortable sofa seating to watch television, a reading nook with a rocking chair and a study room tucked away at the back. The amber glass panels in the windows cast beautiful patterns that move with the sunlight through the day. A Gond painting is drawn on the wall behind the bed to immediately catch the eye. On the other side of his bedroom is a bay window through which you can get a view of his private study. “This is a beautiful spot that combines a multitude of spaces – a tall library wall, comfortable seating, a reading nook and a study room tucked away at the back,” Gupta says. A Gond painting is drawn on the wall behind the bed to immediately catch the eye. “Both Irrfan and Sutapa are very artistically inclined and creative in their outlook. Here, we have created a focal point with a drawing on the wall that was done by the in-house artists at Peacock Life,” Gupta says.

When asked where he will keep the Oscar, Irrfan laughs. “So many awards mean so little, but that? that is an award that would change everything; it can open up every choice for an actor.” He pauses, surely aware that, as an actor on the radar of the world’s best film-makers, he isn’t too far from that possibility. “If it were ever to come, it would come with its own place. It would find its own place.”

From the stage to television to the silver screen, Irrfan Khan has established himself as an actor to be reckoned with. His latest role as a homeowner has him drop his mask for Architectural Digest. Arguably the finest actor in current Hindi cinema, Khan has moved from a home on Madh Island, a quick boat ride away from the Mumbai mainland, to a high-rise in Oshiwara, an area close to Lokhandwala, the suburban neighbourhood that houses many of his film and television colleagues. It is a literal hop from the fringes to the thick of it, akin to the actor’s career. Aug- Sept 2018 Casa Decor 30

Irrfan Khan, as we all know, is a powerhouse of talent but what drives his creativity? We assume his new home! As they say “a house is an extension of one’s personality” and it holds true for Irffan Khan’s detail-oriented rustic elegance. Adorned with cut-out floral motifs, latticed arches, wall art and decorative intricacies, along with traditional furniture – this home has a delightful dreamy world-like quality to it. As a tribute to Indian art and design aesthetic, Irrfan Khan’s home is occupied with exotic travel finds, and Indian paintings. It’s breathtakingly stunning and exhibits a range of traditional Indian designs splashed in bold colours. The living room is surrounded by balconies on two sides. “These balconies feature tall greens and act as screens blocking the outside world,” Gupta says.

The house makes a stylish statement right at the entrance with an ink-blue foyer populated with cut-out floral motifs, decorative frames and art sculptures, with only a sliver of light creeping in from the majestic archway. Walking in through the darkness, you step abruptly—and almost shockingly—into a spacious house bathed in lots of vibrant colours and natural light

The home stands out for its eclectic vibe, brought about by the combination of traditional Indian furniture and design elements with a modern layout. A charpai (a low, wood-frame bench with a seat of woven rope, usually found in homes in rural villages), the Gond painting (Indian tribal art), an intricately carved wooden screen framing a mirror on the wall reminiscent of Rajasthani jharokhas (enclosed balconies, windows in ancient forts) and colourful locally sourced jute rugs are just a few of the many examples of the age-old vernacular elements that have been given a contemporary lift. The corner pillar of this large space has been judiciously used to display more accessories that give this home its unique character. Mirrors of different shapes and sizes are hung along with terracotta panels here.

The corresponding gap in the bedroom bookshelf has been beautifully stacked with awards being haphazardly placed in all levels. “I like her room because it is its own thing; it has evolved on its own. There is no school of design here. There is nothing synthetic about the way it feels.” – Irrfan Sutapa’s bedroom, with its floral motif and Gond art, is a more individualistic area, standing out in a house built around varied knick-knacks, collected across far-flung travels. Sutapa’s bedroom is thus tailored to her likes and tastes. This room also has a tiny balcony, just big enough to hold a round yellow table and two chairs,” Gupta says. The four-poster bed is sourced from Peacock Life, the table lamps have been made by artisans from Jodhpur and the Gond art is from Sutapa’s personal collection. Aug- Sept 2018 Casa Decor 32
