RESUME

Anyone can significantly sense the short life-cycle of Taiwanese buildings. The growing, aging, rapid death, and rapid reconstruction of cities in Taiwan are similar to the life-cycle of animals.

INTRODUCTION 沐-Bathing, 墓-Tomb, both pronounced 道-Path, pronounced ’Dou’

’Mu’

The Photo presents the feature of traditional cemetery in Taiwan-Colorfully decorated and has its own orientation. Each tomb belongs to different families to store coffins or ash urns. A cemetery path in Kingshan links two villages. In this project, I attempted to reform this path to become a new gathering place for both the living and the dead.

SITE: KINGSHAN

(THE REMAINING SECTION of YULU ANCIENT PATH)

Yulu is no longer used to transport goods. It remains a section in Kingshan, and is the only linkage between two villages- Meitain and Huanggan Villages. The two adjacent villages share common features: Aging population, endowment of natural hot springs and a large cemetery between them. The villagers feel intimate with the cemetery in which most of their familiar people were buried.

1.VILLAGE of LIFE MEITAIN VILLAGE

GATE BLANK

Meitain Village is a hot spring village since under Japanese rulership. Both Maitain and Huanggan villagers enjoy hot spring bathing here.

There is a ‘blank’ between Meitain Village and Cemetery. This area doesn’t have any house or tomb. It is like a ‘gate’ between life and death.

DEATH? or just is ‘MOVING’ The aging population, short distance between housing and cemetery, and frequent tomb visiting, make the departed in Kingshan were just like 'moving' to the village of Death after passing away. In Kingshan, the villagers know more dead people than living ones. Hence, the cemetery is like another village in a Kingshan.

1

INTIMATE tombs houses

Some areas in Kingshan, the houses direct contact the cemetery. People in Kingshan are not afraid of cemetery because all the tombs are carry their passed family members and close friends.

THE SECRET ENTRANCE

BLANK

The only entrance of cemetery is secret and narrow. Though the path is busy for the villages, it is hidden for tourists or any outsiders.

3.VILLAGE of LIFE HUANGGAN VILLAGE

The cemetery houses most of the dead Kingshan people. It is intimate for the villagers in both Meitain and Huanggan. They frequently visit the cemetery. The cemetery path is also the only way that links the two villages.

Huanggan Village is a fishing village. It provides fresh seafood for both Meitain and itself. The Huanggan villagers frequently go to Meitain Village for hot spring bathing and grocery shopping.

FIELD STUDY - THE VILLAGE of DEATH DEVELOPMENT Tombs started from a nearby path to the outer area, and soon met a wide field. Today, the edge of the cemetery touches the residential areas. The area of the cemetery cannot be enlarged anymore. However, the density of cemetery grows higher and higher.

COLORS and POSITIONS

(30 meters in both sides of the path) As we can see from the picture, the colors of the tombs are vary and are orderless. The color, pink, prevails over the other colors in the cemetery. The highest density of tombs takes place in the nearby path areas, and lowers down from the path to its periphery. b a

DAILY ACTIVITIES People mainly use the path in Village of Death for four reasons. Tomb visiting, hot spring bathing, shopping and hiking. They need to frequently commute to the other side because the main thermae, grocery market and seafood market locate in different villages.

ORIGINAL ROUTE SIGNS The main activity in Village of Death is tomb visiting. The original route design divided the main path into nine separate parts, from A to I. a

DESIGN STRATEGY (PATH

TRANSFORMING)

ISSUE The frequent visits to the tombs and the hot springs are the two main reasons that make Village of death busy. The relationship among three villages is intimate and intense. I just want to reinforce this relationship and improve several problems:

MAZE CEMETERY PATH MAZE

MAZE

ORIGINAL 1. VILLAGE of DEATH is like a MAZE The placements of houses (tombs) in Village of Death are random. However, there is one straight path. When people visit tombs, they must find the right sign on the main path (A to I), derail from the main path and cross through the weedy area into the maze (entire cemetery). This process makes people confused and uncomfortable.

2. THE INSUFFICIENCY of FACILITIES The lack of facilities makes the process of visiting inconvenient. People need places to wash fruits, prepare incense sticks and burn paper money.

3. RELATIONSHIP REINFORCEMENT There are already plenty of people in the Village of Death (including living people and the departed). I want to make the cemetery path a new gathering place for both living people and the departed. They can play together, and have a place to ‘linger’ and ‘accompany’ each others.

‘We are born naked and will die naked’ Bathing together has long been a traditional social activity for these two villages since the Japanese Rulership. I put a gate between life and death. This gate does not have a physical door, but behaves a seal on the landscape. A thermae is infilled to purify both people’s soul and body before they go in or out the Village of Death.

We are born naked, and will die naked. Bathing together is not only a traditional social activity in Kingshan, but also like a ritual for people to purify themselves before entering the Village of Death. This gate also has some flexible spaces for people to do other regular activities when bathing is over. People can also go upstairs to the ground floor through the tubes, for taking a break or refreshing themselves during the bathing.

METAPHOR 3

The entire thermae is a metaphor for cemetery. The random arrangement of tubes and colorfully illuminated environment make people have an illusion that they are in the cemetery. Hence, the thermae and the cemetery space link together in people’s mind. When people finish bathing and walk in the cemetery, they might feel more comfortable and peaceful because the environment of the cemetery reminds them of the process of hot spring bathing. People bath in the thermae can choose the suitable size of tubes. Different sizes of tubes correspond to different sizes of families or groups – just like the cemetery. The traditional Taiwan tombs have varied sizes for different family size of the passed. Additionally, the colorful glass on the tubes’ top generates the mysterious lights into the pool. The tubes reach to the ground, and blend into the colorful cemetery.

SITE: NANTOU, TAIWAN Nantou has expansive farmland, a large number of agriculture population, but has one of the lowest population density in Taiwan. The landscape in Nantou is complex, the weather is moist and changeable. As a result, innovative and appropriate construction is necessary. The main issue of this design competition is to conceive a modular construction method to overcome those environmental problems. Additionally, this building must adapt to varied country family structures, and make interior modification easy.

LIN’S FAMILY THREE GENERATIONS BANANA ORCHARD HOUSE Mr. Lin’s father was a banana farmer and has an expansive banana farmland. Now he has retired and gave his farmland to his son Mr. Lin. Mr. Lin takes care of the banana farmland now. Three generations live together (Lin couple, their two daughters and Lin’s parents). In order to overcome the moist weather and drain water efficiently, this building patterned on Taiwan traditional stilt building. The lower space can also function as storage room and garage.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN STRATEGY There is a ‘stack effect area’ in the middle of the building to control the interior micro weather. During summer, the louver will open automatically. Cold air can enter into the building to cool the inner space and emanate hot air. During winter, the louver will close automatically. Cold air outside cannot enter the building, but inner air can still circulate.

EFFICIENT COOLING and DRAINAGE Nantou is a moist and rainy countryside. In order to adapt to the local weather and drain water efficiently, the ground floor levels 4 meters high. Air can go through the under space of the building to keep the interior space dry and cool. Rain water can directly drain along the landscape without blocking. Additionally, the basement space can also function as storage room and a garage.

HUSTLE & BUSTLE - DOWNTOWN TAIPEI East-Taipei is the most prosperous area in Taiwan, the site is near the 101 Tower, one of the tallest building in the world. This area renders rapid and instant feelings. To design a distinct multi-art center in this place. I tried to extract the site from this atmosphere both physically and psychologically. In order to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. I lowered the height of the land and made the site encircled by trees. The new building will be hidden from the city and wait for people meeting it in an unexpected fashion.

NEW LAYER

THE LADDER of DIVINE ‘DESCENT’ From ancient times to the present, people always want to escape from the worldly life. Fame, money, power and love, make people always on the run. The Ladder of Divine Ascent Monastery of St Catherine Sinai 12th century, described people climb the ladder to go to the heaven. Today, we know that we cannot escape the world by a heavenly ladder. In contrast, we can still temporarily escape this busy life - I want to create a new underground layer in downtown Taipei. A place which is hidden in the city awaits people to find it.

DUNHUANG GROTTOES and THE THEATER of DIONYSUS The tranquil and mystical atmosphere in Dunhuang Grottoes (China) inspires me the concept of designing this art center. I wanted to put the exhibits and platforms in different grottoes and made people discover the exhibits (treasure) in an unexpected fashion. The main platform is in the center of the building. It is like The Theater of Dionysus (Greek). It will be hidden underground in order to avoid the scenery of the city; however, it still can be easily seen when you approach the building.

There is no specific entrance; people can enter the building from any directions. By means of the lower elevation, people will soon be isolated from downtown Taipei after entering the building. The display windows are along the main path, people can go along the main path, and they will see the exhibits completely. However, they can also use the shortcut stairs to visit any display spaces they want.

MY OIL PAINTING TEACHER, MY CLIENT PROFESSOR BUQING HUANG

'How can a building signifies a person?' This building was commissioned by my respectful oil painting teacher Professor Buqing Huang (Taiwan Rep. of 48th Venice Biennale, who currently teaches fine art at Department of Architecture, National Cheng Kung University) Professor Huang's early works were serene and realistic. Their purport bare on certain religious and mystical feeling. He used raw materials such as stone, rusted metal in his works.

BUQING HUANG 1948 (age 64) Born in Zhanghua, TAIWAN MA, Department of Plastic Arts, University of Paris St-Denis, FRANCE

A CHANGE HIM

PROFESSOR HUANG AND HIS PASSED WIFE Chinhsiu Lee, Huang’s passed wife was also a famous artist. Her early death changed Huang’s life view and his work. He started to ragpick. He converted those ‘garbage’ into a variety of vivacious works - His works became less mysterious and tranquil but colorful, sexy and capturing. Today, His works often signify the vitality and human gesture. I tried to materialize his genre of works and his personal inner world into this building. His workroom will be the womb and envelope of those works, and it will be the embodiment of professor Huang. 53

EARLY WORK in 1970s (Charcoal and watercolor)

CURRENT WORK in 2010s (Multimedia)

HUANG’S WORK IN VENICE BIENNALE, ITALY The seed is symbolic of earth and human body. Seeds in large quantity build up a world of ritual solemnity, in which the sense of intimacy with nature, a characteristic of the oriental art tradition, is combined with the human pathos of native Taiwan culture. The audiences are immersed in an atmosphere of warm festivity, and gradually get mesmerized into a deep compassion with the sentiments and ethnic orientation of native Taiwan culture. In an age dominated by technological civilization and consumptive rush, Professor Huang’s nostalgic works build up a haven where earth intimacy and the communion with nature still have a chance to survive.

SITE A TRANQUIL PLACE IN TAINAN CITY The site is encircled by access roads. While the site is in the downtown, it is still quiet and isolated. A green path beside the site and there are several smaller paths around the site.

A LOVELY COUPLE DANCING IN THE PEACE The site is located the crossing. One of the two adjacent streets leads to the main access road. The other one leads to the green path. The houses close by are 1 to 4 floors in height. In front of the site is a traditional red brick house and it has a large courtyard. The new building mainly serves as a work place and mini gallery (nonresidential). A four meter tall workroom, places for receiving friends and resting, and an independent entrance for visitors are necessary.

HUANG’S DAILY LIFE MORNING Huang usually goes to his workroom early. He will take the material in his car and park the car directly in the workroom in order to use the material conveniently.

NOON His French friends visit him almost every day. They love to have lunch outdoor. Sometimes, they barbecue in the courtyard.

‘HUANG’S OLD GREEN VOLVO’ AFTERNOON In the afternoon, Huang will engross on his work. Sometimes, he will take a nap, so the workroom needs a space to sleep. People who want to visit his gallery usually come in the afternoon. Because at that time Huang always is busy with his works, the building must has an independent entrance for visitors.

MULTI-MATERIAL, MULTI-MEDIA Huang’s current works style is colorful and always made with multimedia. As a result, I tried to create an adequate envelope to consort those capturing art works. Multi-material was my strategy to create the appearance of this building. The main material of the new workroom are traditional Taiwan bricks, colorful steel, wood and stone.

PROFESSIONAL WORK URS13 PLAYGROUND & INTERNATIONAL ART FESTIVAL (COMPLETED) (2011-2012 in ARCHITERIOR Architects & Associates) PROJECT DEVELOPMENT, FACADE STUDY, CONSTRUCTION DRAWING, 3D MODELING & RENDERING Supervisor : Yuchang Liang Location : Taipei City Team Partner : with Ailun Liu The Nangang Bottle Cap Factory, originally devoted to producing caps for beer bottles, neighbors Nangang Train Station to the south, Xinghua Road (connecting the station to Nanxing Park) to the east, and the local core of the community along Nangang Road to the north. The 10-odd structures within the factory area form a grid-like configuration of solids and voids. Traces of past industry linger within the continuous space and high ceilings of the abandoned warehouses, with graffiti adornments heightening the unique ambiance of the urban ruin.

ORIGINAL

NEW INTERVENING MEDIUM Using the color white as an intervening medium, various solids are inserted within the site, opening up the boundaries between interior and exterior, and juxtaposing the old with the new. The white beer boxes of old have been transformed into six white boxes, transforming the rugged walls, wooden truss structure, and high, open spaces of the abandoned warehouses. These interventions allow a transformation to take place among the once lonely and silent factory structures, taking root amongst the space formed by the first two rows of warehouses, now a stage for various exhibitions and artistic performances. The entire community and general public is invited to explore the multitude of surprises and delights within! 65

OLD BEER BOX PLUG 50x150x250mm PLUG 50x150x300mm

This is our first attempt at using the form and symbolism of a beer box to outline space. The beer box itself if an industrial product within the beer cap factory assembly line, and is a familiar everyday object for the public. Using the concept of a beer box, the design transfigures the form to create a variety of new spaces, richly illuminated with layers of light and shadows, historical memories and experiences. PROJECT COMPLETED As the Bottle Cap Factory of yesteryear is transformed into a nurturing environment for creativity and vision of future urban living, the site not only becomes a playground unaffected by industrial production for children, but also a playground for adults as well, unleashing their pressures wrought by reality, transporting them back to a state of innocence and joy, and allowing their imaginations to frolic with abandon.

PROFESSIONAL WORK BAOYE DETENTION BASIN PARK (COMPLETED) (2010-2011 in ARCHITERIOR Architects & Associates) PROJECT DEVELOPMENT, FACADE STUDY, CONSTRUCTION DRAWING, 3D MODELING & RENDERING Supervisor: Daren Cai Location : Kaohsiung City Team Partner: with Chinnan Hsieh Because of the lower terrain, Kaohsiung city has suffered from floods. Nowadays, the government promotes the Detention Pond to control the water level, it also serve as park and open space for citizens. The Baoye Detention Pond project is one of them and the mission includes two parts - the landscape of the detention pond and the construction of the pumping station. Because the detention pond is usually dry, our proposal is to lower down the artificial construction and to use landscape as a means to echo the local needs, so the detention pond is more like a park than the facilities of water. We study the section carefully, especially the situations with or without water, and how the residents approach the detention pond. We believe the visitors would enjoy their experience with the detention pond and change their feelings toward the water facilities.

PUMPING STATION

The pumping station is part of the Baoye Detention Pond. It is the control center including space for pumping machine, duty room and space for promotion and public education. We divided the programs into three major spaces, so they could work separately and individually. The three spaces could be noticed from the outsides, combining glasses box, metal box and a transparent metal box. We spent most of our effort on the transparent metal box. It is the space for the pumping machine, the heart of the station. As there’s a lot of noise and heat when the machine starts to work, we suggest the double skin wall to reduce the impact on the neighborhood. Inner layer is a glass wall while the outer layer is a metal net. During dark, stormy nights, when residents staring at the pumping station, they could see light illuminating inside the room of pumping machine, which would probably comfort them and make them feel secured.

PROFESSIONAL WORK HIGH RESIDENCE LONGDA (UNDER CONSTRUCTION) (2011-2012 in ARCHITERIOR Architects & Associates) PROJECT DEVELOPMENT, FACADE STUDY, CONSTRUCTION DRAWING, 3D MODELING & RENDERING High Residence Longda, which is located at an important urban junction in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, we attempt to transform the building envelope that protects the residents’ private lives into a meaningful public city façade. The architecture is to initiate an intriguing dialogue with the disordered built environment through a unique yet contemporary gesture. The design wishes to break away from the typical mundane and repetitive urban residential housing, and express a vibrant city life specific to Kaohsiung City instead.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY 2010 DRIFTWOOD WORKSHOP IN THE SHANYUAN TRIBE (ON-GOING) ORIGINATOR AND INSTRUCTOR (with Yishi Hsieh and Yiwei Kuo) Achievement : 40-people gathering hall and several facilities with the driftwoods Location : Shanyuan Tribe’s Coast, Taitung August 8, 2009, Morakot, the deadliest typhoon in Taiwan record history, landed Taiwan and soon wrought catastrophic damages. Summer of 2010, due to Typhoon Morakot and illegal lumbering, millions of tons of driftwoods accumulated along the Shan-Yuan Tribe’s coast. These driftwoods cut off the sea route, but burning them will produce toxic gas.

PLANNING

Trying to resolve this issue via a different way, I with two friends from an NGO group organized a workshop. We called on college students and worked closely with indigenous people. In the end we built a 40-people gathering hall and several facilities with the driftwoods (a observation tower, a dry toilet and a fuel storage room).

THE STELA OF THE SWEET SPRING Calligraphy Regular Script India paper 350x700mm Feeling as high as thousand meters, the pearls and jade cross reflecting, gold and green reflecting each other, Such that their brilliance could cauterize the clouds, and it is so high that it could cover the sun and moon. Seeing as its moving mountains and diverting streams, excessive grandiosity and extreme extravagance, was because of people's debauchery, they should be thoroughly blamed.

THOUSAND WORDS Calligraphy Cursive Style India paper 350x700mm The sky was black and the earth was yellow, the universe was vast and a dark whole. The sun rises and sets and the moon is regularly round, stars spread high above without a toll. Cold and heat come and go, fall harvest and storing for winter people know. Intercalary days and months are fixed to make a year, when clouds rise and meet cold, there will soon be a rain, when dew drops congeal, they become frost in the main.
