History H.urbametrix was found in 2006 by Samarth Gwalani and Riya Patel as a collaborative architectural and landscape workshop in Pune, on the outskirts of one of the densest of cities, Mumbai. Its founding members Riya Patel and Samarth Gwalani, implemented an integrated approach towards small scale projects tucked into the heart of the dense city with the goal of creating a feeling of dedensification. The influence of architecture and landscape gave birth to the firm’s innovative approach of looking for ways to allow for the buildings to morph from regular living spaces to open and green breathable communal hubs. Today, H.urbametrix has extended this partnership by including the Dubai-based architect, Hanshen Sun to the team. Hanshen Sun’s renowned generative approach to architecture complemented the challenges the firm set out to solve and allowed the firm to explore different ways of finding complex solutions to the problem of growing density. Consequently by 2010 the firm had set up to offices, one in Pune and another in Dubai. H.urbametrix is currently involved with more than 50 projects in Eastern Asia, Middle East, and South America. Working globally gives each designer valuable cultural and economic insight and creates the foundation of H.urbametrix’s consinuously evolving professional knowledge base.

Firm philosophy • Critiquing Urban Density: Working with the idea of “dedensification” H.urbametrix applies its interdisciplinary approach to solving problems on projects set in dense cityscapes. The goal of the firm is to create a porosity, a seamless transition of landscape into the heart of the living spaces. • Integrated parametric approach: In a rapidly changing world, H.urbametrix believes in using a highly responsive, generative approach that will cater to the client’s needs on all scales. The firm constantly challenges it’s design techniques in order to optimize solutions for the end user. The use of parametric architecture allows us to go through an extensive discovery and rationalization process through which we are able to generate solutions that would otherwise be unthinkable. • Sustainability: H.urbametrix’s design intent is to approach environmental quality and sustainability from the ground up rather than as a checklist. In collaboration with our clients and expert consultants we carefully evaluate the unique attributes of each project to make informed choices to optimize the design by integrating the most suitable sustainable design strategies.
