r a e w m i Sw FABRICS

Not sure where to start when it comes to choosing fabrics for swimwear – here are our top tips! DECIDE WHAT YOUR SWIMWEAR IS FOR?

STRETCH AND RECOVERY A swimsuit should be like a second skin so it’s important that the fabric is durable and has a degree of stretch that’s controllable. Look for fabrics with a strong recovery – this means that when stretched, it returns to its original shape and offers resistance. Look at fabrics for danceor active-wear, as these garment styles require the same nylon and spandex properties.

ELASTIC

This seems a silly question but is it for mainly sunbathing or is it for water sports? These questions will help you decide how you construct it.

FUN PRINTS

Elastic for swimwear needs to be resistant to chlorine and the UV rays. Normal elastic will rot or go brittle.

THREAD Opt for a polyester thread that won’t be weakened by the chlorine and salt water and won’t snap. Scanfil is a universal sewing thread, which is 100% polyester. It comes in familiar spool size and most importantly it’s compliant with OekoTex environmental standard 100 to avoid harmful substances. It comes in a wide range of colours so there will be one to match your swimsuit. To find out more about Scanfil Thread – click here.

NEEDLES Use a ballpoint and/or stretch needles.

STITCH TYPE An overlocker uses three or four threads to produce an entwined stitch that’s stretchy and ideal for swimwear. Don’t worry if you don’t have an overlocker as you can use a stretch or triple straight stitch and a walking foot.

LININGS Linings come in a variety of thicknesses and usually in neutral colours like beige, white and black so they don’t show through. If you are looking for more control in your swimsuit, you should consider lining it with a power mesh.

USE THE RIGHT FABRIC Swimwear patterns need a special type of fabric and it’s recommend that you make them with synthetic fabrics such as nylon that have at least 10-20% Lycra or spandex/Elastane. These fabrics are stretchy, lightweight and come in bright colours but can be slippery to work with. It is colourfast, resistant to chlorine, easy to look after and dries quickly so it’s the perfect choice PLAIN COLOURS for swimwear. These fabrics should have either a two-way or four-way stretch. Four-way stretch means it will stretch equally horizontally and vertically. They also come in a wide range of plain colours and fun prints. You can also look for polyester blends with the same percentage of spandex.

Scrap busting underwear Wardrobe By Me has just released a Bralette pattern that’s fully lined. This soft line bralette with adjustable straps and a two-part cup has an under bust supported by wide elastic or fabric band. It’s super comfortable without compromising the support and ideal for using up smaller pieces of knit fabric. The pattern comes in sizes XS-3XL. DIVE INTO THE WORLD OF MAKING SWIMWEAR

We chat with the inspirational Tommie Hernandez from Sirena Patterns about how she fell in love with sewing swimwear Where does your design inspiration come from? Inspiration can come from anything that triggers your mind, whether it’s something positive or negative. For example, for one of my favorite fashion shows Guardian Angel so I created a collection inspired by my dad’s favourite beach, Crashboat. He had recently passed away and it was my way of expressing my love for him.

When did you start sewing, and what attracted you to creating swimwear? I was only eight years old when I started sewing. I discovered the magic of transforming a piece of fabric into a garment and was also a way of expressing my personality. Swimwear making came after returning to Puerto Rico from studying fashion design at F.I.T. in New York. I established an atelier with the goal of making bridal and eveningwear but my clients started asking for swimwear and the rest is history! When did you realise you wanted to create swimwear patterns for the home sewer? After 17 years of making custom swimwear and selling my swimsuit brand to dozens of stores, four years ago I set up Sirena Patterns. I was looking for a way to help people from all over learn everything I knew about this art without having to spend so many years, like me.

Have you created swimsuits for anyone famous? For many years, I made the official swimsuits of Miss Universe and Miss World Puerto Rico Beauty pageants. Miss Universe winners like Denise

Quiñones and Zuleyka Rivera have both worn my swimsuits. I have also dressed TV personality Vanessa Minillo and America’s Next Top Model winner Caridee English. What are your best-selling sewing patterns? Our best selling patterns are the Sharon Swimsuit and the Elizabeth Leggings. The Sharon swimsuit is a high leg suit great for beginners and flatters almost any body type. The Elizabeth Pattern can be made either long or short and offers super high waist, deep side pockets (which is ideal to carry your mobile phone) and a zippered pocket in the waistband.

Sewing with fabrics suitable for swimwear can be intimidating. Do you have any tips for sewers that want to give it a go this summer? I think the best advice is to not sew knits the same way you sew woven fabrics. You can definitely sew a stretch fabrics with a regular sewing machine as long as you: • Use a ballpoint needle • Use the lightning or zigzag stitch in your machine. A 2.5mm long x 1.5mm wide zigzag works great for joining pieces. • Make sure to test the stitches in a scrap of the same fabric that you will be using to make the final garment • Practice, practice practice! You have recently started designing activewear patterns too. Are there any similarities between swim- and activewear? For swimwear, since the garment will get completely wet, recommended fabrics are more limited, with at least 50% stretch. Nylon spandex is my preferred choice. If using other blends like poly/elastane make sure they have a high percentage of elastane, at least 15%. For activewear garments, you want hydrophobic fabrics (fabrics that do not absorb moisture, like polyester/elastane and supplex). Some finishes like triple coverstitch are more used in activewear than swimwear but you can use both coverstitch and a serger for more professional looking finishes. What’s in the pipeline for Sirena Patterns? We’re so excited to share that we’re working on two projects. The first one is a physical sewing book with patterns included that will launch in mid 2022 and the second one is a membership experience where I will teach classes and create patterns exclusively for that community. Both things have been requested by our followers for a while and now is the time. We want to keep inspiring people from all over the world to learn to sew, no matter if it’s as a hobby or if they want to launch their fashion business, I’m here to help!

FABULOUS FABRICS

FOR SUMMER

Julie Bonnar from The Pattern Pages talks through how to choose the best fabrics for summer apparel

With the warmer months comes a different wardrobe of clothes so it’s time to think about the right fabrics to choose for your summer sewing patterns that are practical and function for hotter days.

FABRIC QUALITIES FOR SUMMER FABRIC WEIGHT

Heavy fabrics are out! Choose a fabric that feels light and airy.

BREATHABILITY

This usually comes hand in hand with lightweight fabrics but make sure it’s breathable too. Natural fibred fabrics are perfect as they’re loosely weaved with finer threads that make for a more comfortable garment, which won’t retain moisture and keep you cool.

COLOUR

Light coloured fabrics will help reflect the light and heat. Choose neutral colours like nude, cream and beige or go for pastel colours such as mint green, baby blue and lemon.

STYLE

Loose fitting garments allow the air to circulate around your body better than fitted clothing. Search for patterns with lots of ease such as maxi dresses, wide legged trousers, tiered skirts and baggy tops.

TOP FABRICS FOR SUMMER 1. LINEN

Linen has heat- and moisture-wicking properties and is also a naturally anti-bacterial fabric. It can be dyed different colours, and is best used for loose shirts, trousers and dresses. It does tend to wrinkle but has an interesting texture and is easy to wash and dries quickly. You might want to consider a linen blend such as the Bray collection from Modelo. This will give you the best of both worlds with a viscose and linen mix that is less likely to wrinkle and is softer for the skin. It also has a great drape and weight meaning it will work for all sorts of summer garments. To find more linen and linen blends – click here

2. COTTON

Cottons from Sunburst collection from Art Gallery Fabrics

Cotton is less expensive than linen and a more popular choice especially with those learning to sew. It comes in different weights so be sure to choose one that’s suitable for your project. This fabric absorbs moisture and is more durable than linen and can be washed in the washing machine and dries quickly. One of my favourite fabrics for summer is Seersucker, which has a puckering effect that’s created by weaving the fabric on twin-looms at different speeds. Gingham has also made a bit of a comeback (find out more in the Focus on fabrics feature in this issue). However, there are lots to look out for such as batiste, pima, chambray, broadcloth, lawn and poplin too.

3. DOUBLE GAUZE

This fabric is really on-trend and a blouse made with this is a must-sew for this season! This fabric consists of two layers of fine open woven cotton, which are attached together with tiny stab stitches at regular intervals in a grid pattern, and barely visible. It’s soft to touch and adds a bit of texture to your garment. This fabric is excellent for dresses and blouses but can be transparent so you may want to line your garment.

Dusky Pink Embroidered Double Gauze from Nikaho by Modelo

4. RAYON

Rayon isn’t a natural fibre, although it is made from natural cellulose, which is chemically processed to produce the fibres. But it is just as cool and comfortable to wear as linen and cotton, but not quite as durable so you need to be careful when washing it. Rayon is light and absorbs moisture so is a great fabric for summer dresses and skirts, and really soft to touch so comfortable next to the skin. Again you can look for blends, this blend of rayon and polyester shown here is drapey, cool and garments hang beautifully when they’re made from this fabric. It has a slight linen textured effect that adds to the fabric’s dimension making it ideal for summer tops and dresses. Praia Navy Lightweight Slub Rayon from Modelo

5. RAMIE

Ramie is made from the stalks of flowers and plants and is gaining popularity in the fashion industry as a sustainable eco fibre. It’s strong, durable and very absorbent (even more than cotton). It’s also breathable and bacteria-resistant but does have a tendency to wrinkle and also doesn’t have any elastic properties. It has very similar properties to linen but ramie keeps it shapes well and does not shrink. To find more fabrics for sewing this season – click here

TRENDSETTER

The trend for summer is all about flattering sleeve shapes and can add that something extra to a plain dress or top 1. DOLMAN

Elodie Wrap Dress from Closet Core Patterns – click here

This dress is a modern take on a classic wrap dress and features romantic and flowy sleeve options, which are equally appropriate at a park picnic or a special wedding. Make with a stylish dolman style sleeve and choose between a short sleeve and a longer more formal option that ends at the elbow. It’s the ideal dress to balance out your body shape, and comes in a wide range of sizes 0-30.

2. RUFFLE

This feminine semi-fitted top has a super selection of sleeves including a flirty double cut-on the fold ruffle, self-lined draped sleeve and classic sleeveless shell. Designed with a pearshaped figure in mind, the ruffles will add dimension at the shoulders, which balances out wider hips so they appear slim in comparison! The pattern comes in sizes 0-16.

3. FLOUNCE

Get your summer style sorted with this flounced sleeve which is cleverly set into the side panelled design lines giving this style an easy feel and fit. Wear with jeans on the weekend or team it with a pencil skirt for your working week. It has such a feminine feel that you won’t want to take it off! A rolled hem is a great hem to finish these types of sleeves as it’s quick and easy to do on finer fabrics such as lightweight cottons, silks, chambrays and linens, and used on a garment to weight the bottom so it hangs properly. CONSTRUCTION

Here’s how to create the patchwork front. Sew all right sides together with ¼in seam allowance.

1. Take the template #5 in fabric B and the 1½in x 11in strip in fabric F, and sew together as shown here.

2. Take the template #3 in fabric D and sew and attach it as shown in the diagram above.

5. Take template #2 in fabric C and join as shown in the diagram above. Press.

6. Sew both the sections together and attach the remaining strip of fabric F and press.

3. Take the 1½in x 10in strip (fabric F) and sew it above the piece you have just sewn. Press and set aside.

4. Take the template #1 from fabric A and the 1½in x 5in strip (fabric F) and sew together.

7. Take template #4 in fabric E 8. Trim the excess fabric and sew it to finish the patched to create a 10½in x 8½in rectangle. Press. rectangle and quilt as desired.

ASSEMBLING THE CLUTCH 9. Change to your zipper sewing machine foot. Place one of the 10½in x 8½in rectangle (fabric G) right side up. Centre the zipper, right side up on top of the fabric and place your patched fabric piece on top of the lining and zipper right sides down. You should have lining and zipper face up, and main fabric face down. Stitch along the edge of the zipper.

10. Fold back and press the main fabric and the lining to expose the finished edges along the zipper.

12. Separate the patched piece with the backing and the lining pieces on each side of the bag and fold the ‘flaps’ so the exterior fabrics and the lining fabrics match right sides together. Pin in place to form one large rectangle with the exterior pieces to one side and lining pieces to the other side. The red line in the picture shows the stitching line. Sew using a ½in seam allowance, all the way around the clutch, leaving a 4-5in opening in the lining side of the bag for turning.

11. Open the zipper and repeat the previous steps for the other side, and using the 10½in x 8½in rectangle (fabric G) and the 10½in x 8½in rectangle (fabric B) for the backing.

13. Turn the clutch inside out and handstitch the lining opening closed and give it a good press.
