ABOUT THE SITE

CHIPPENDALE

The locality is bounded by Broadway to the north, Lee Street and Regent Street to the east, City Road to the west and Cleveland Street to the south. The former Carlton Uni Brewery site, whilst not subject to this locality statement and supporting principles is an inherent part of Chippendale. The locality is a residential and mixed use neighbourhood with existing rows of residential terrace houses, commercial buildings and warehousing contribute to the legibility of the area’s history and neighbourhood quality. The scale of housing and adapted warehouse buildings is generally low to medium rise with the exception of the blocks fronting Parramatta Road and Regent Street where early to mid 20th century taller offi ce buildings and warehouses dominate. The consistency of terrace rows and pre-war and post-war industrial warehouses, their scale and proportions, roof design and materials palette, is important to the signifi cance of the heritage conservation area. High quality additions and alterations are encouraged to maintain the character of the conservation area and protect residential amenity

PROJECT

This project is todesign a community/co-working facility in the inner-city Sydney suburb of Chippendale. The site, located at Myrtle and Pine streets Chippendale, contains an existing three-storey converted warehouse (63 Myrtle St) that must be retained and adapted for re-use and a singlestorey child-care centre (60 Pine St) that can be demolished.

The site is cover by dense of tree and vegetation. Size the types of tree is huge, and chich provide a natural shading and beautiful animation of shadow pattern. Some tree is more than 10 years located in the park, which is the witness of our site. The tree groups are also contribute to colling down the site temperature. The decidous tree located at pine street is seasonal species, and the colour of the leaves will change by seasons. This is speaking another beautiful language of our site.

COMMUNITY PLANTING PROGRAM -Grow and share fruit and veggies Even if you don’t have the space or resources, you can still keep your green thumbs busy by getting involved with a community garden. Community gardening offers you the opportunity to grow and harvest your own produce. It also creates more green patches of vegetables, plants and flowers across the city. -Greening the city Once these have grown, the urban canopy will be 50 per cent larger. This will create enough shade to reduce average daily temperatures by 2 degrees Celsius. -Footpath gardening Footpath gardening is a great way to meet your neighbours, get out in the fresh air and to be healthy – it's about taking the patch of the City out the front of your house or business and making it beautiful.

PARK&PUBLIC SPACE

The park is located in the heart of the chippendale, which is bounded with the traditional warehouse and residential house. In the phase in circulation, it cut the myrlter street into west and east side. The park provide a children playground and seating space for people gathering and rest. The park is covered by tree shadow which create a comfortable space for stay.

PARK&PUBLIC SPACE

The communitt center is loacted in the center of the park. The idea of"community center in the park is to muten the building block into the park and connect the indoor and outdoor activity. Also, the community center is designed as a shelter space for the park where gathering people and holding indoor event.

16

Rather than designing a out-standing building in the community. The new proposal fot the community center will follow the historical layout and material language of the suburb.

URBAN LAYOUT CONNECTION The esisting circulation of site is formed by the east and west connection in the park. In order to break down the barrier of interior to exterior;the building and the park, the plan is to create a north and south connection. The community center becom a junction of all this activity and be opened to people from all direction

FORM AND FOREST SENSE OF FOREST,SENSE OF LOST

Forests always give people a sense of loss. This feeling is not only because people become small in nature, but more importantly, the forest can give people a sense of loss in sight, hearing and space. Imagine that when we are standing in the middle of the forest, the surrounding trees rise from us. When we looked up, the leaves blocked the sky, and we couldn't judge the direction by the light and shadow of the sun. Hearing, in the vast forest, there were only the sound of birds and leaves. We can't tell the direction of sound by echoing like in a city.

20

The form and the space arrangement experiance is inspired by the forest. Open ground foor of the buildng is simulating the field of forest land. Serices of 12m tall column is representing the tree of the forest. All room and functional is set between the column like a tree house fixed into the tree. The window framing up the view of outside and the view will change with the move of the place you stand. In the ground floor, you might see the stump. In the first floor, you might see the truss. In the top floor , you might see the leves of the tree.

COMMUNITY FARMING As the first community in Sydney to introduce a community farm, the community farm has been well promoted in Chippendale and has become a major feature of the community. The open space outside the community centre is planned to be used as a new community farm and watered with recycled water. Each household will take turns to plant the land and trade the harvested fruits at the weekend market

The community center lobby is the most active part of the building on weekdays. In addition to the usual corridor connecting the park and the building, on rainy days, water will flow directly into the interior through the funnel on the roof, and a small water pond will be formed on the ground floor of the lobby. Children can play in the water pond to enhance communication with nature. Of course, this rainwater is recycled. Through underground pipes and tanks, rainwater is collected and used for irrigation in external community farms

31

32

WEEKEND MARKET On weekends, the auditorium has become a place for people to sell and sell. People in the community can take out products they do n’t use and exchange with their neighbors. Crops from community farms can also be sold. The community market is used to invigorate the atmosphere of the community, thereby reducing the gap between neighbors.
