Walking along the Darlinghurst Road ďźŒ the street trees are trying their best to be more lush and bigger to hide the dis-harmoniousness of the building. Analogizing the building in high density urban suburb with the lush tree u n d eve l o p e d fo re st , t h ey d eve l o p e d or grow in totally two different way Organized Planed and Natural growing. The concept is intend to exam the outcome of combining the natural growing form into the urban development.

CORNER

The corner tower is recognize as the most iconic part of the school. The shape of the tower is guiding the circulation between Darlinghurst Road and Ryslyn St from the outside and visually attracting people while they walk along the Darlinghurst Road. The bottom part of the corner will be activated when people keep passing by.

HOLLOW SPACE Natural light can get into the building through the middle hollow space. Also , the open space in the center improves the natural ventilation of the whole site.

BREATH Like most high density building, there is a gap floor in the meddle of the building. This floor is the breathing hole of the building ,also it separate the public and private use program. T h e ga p f l o o r c a n f u r t h e r develop as a gathering place for student

SHAPE&MOVEMENT The organic form of each “tree-house is attempt to lead the movement within the building. It contributes to fluid up the interior space.

PROGRAM Each program space is organically allocated in cross distribution ,like a tree house, and connect by continuous ramp.

JOURNEY OF ‘URBAN JUNGLR’ The bridge of the building is similar to the branch of the tree, which connect the the tree from the bottom to the top. In this building, the ramp connect each learning unit in the school from the ground floor park to public shared space(stadium, library, material learning unit, exhibition center) and end up with the academic learning unit on the top. The ramp break down the barrier between floor and it create a continuous movement within the interior space. The aim of designing the continuous ramp is to create a sense of journey that walking trough the ‘urban jungle’ . The crossing bridge is not only contribute to fluid up the space, but also become a gather place that contain different kind of activities for student.

The idea of continuous ramp is applied to the roof top campus. Rather than establishing clear class boundary like most traditional school, the whole upper campus is open to the outside and connected by the movable wall from inside.

FLEXIBILITY OF SPACE

MOVABLE WALL&ACTIVITIES

The main campus (senior middle school/junior school/staff office) is allocated at the top of the building, where exposed to the ample sunlight. In order to fulfill different school activities in limit space , space flexibility is considered as the priority issue. In this case, walls are replaced by movable panels to enhance space flexibility.

FACADE AND MATERIAL Walk along the Darlinghurst road and the surrounding urban block, most of the building is made by brick and light tune colour concrete. In this case , the selection of facade material is attempt to create visual harmony with the adjacent brick building. In considering brick is not economy eff i c i e nt fo r t h i s h u ge vo l u m e building, brick pattern tile is apply to the facade which also require less maintenance. Steel support structure curtain wall is applied on the top floorďźŒwhich visually make the exterior wall look modern and thermally get natural light get into top floor class room. Wall climb growing vegetation will gradually cover the exterior wall by years and tears. The green wall can thermally reduce the heat from the direct sun light in summer and create and become unique facade eventually.
