New York State Legalized Adult-Use Cannabis!

WE WON!

The CRTA & the auction are dead! Thank you to everyone who signed our petition and let Cuomo know New Yorkers, not billionaires will be running New York Cannabis. The Happy Munkey Team is ecstatic we were able to make noise and shed light on what could have been a major blow to the inclusion of Black and Brown people in New York’s legal cannabis industry. We knew that an auction would tank equitable market access-- no New Yorkers, no Black or Brown ownership, no mom and pop shops would have ever been able to catch up. We are excited that there is no auction provision in the MRTA bill that passed the Senate floor today and goes to the Assembly for a vote.

Shoutouts to Crystal People - Stokes & Liz Kruger for pushing this through Albany and bringing adult-use cannabis to New York. This is a huge domino to fall in the fight for federal legalization and it is only a matter of time before the rest of the U.S. to end federal cannabis prohibition. But before we celebrate too hard let’s take a moment, acknowledge this progress and prepare for the road that lies ahead. There are commission members to be named, rules to be written and regulations to be set.

The 128 page bill includes promising components like…

• Automatic expungements for cannabis offenses

• Legal possession of up to 3 oz of flower and 24g of concentrates.

• Home grow

• Nursery Licenses

• Delivery licenses

• Social Consumption licenses

• Heavy focus on social equity applicants owning cannabis businesses

I am writing this on the evening of March 31st, 2021 and the MRTA has officially passed both the New York General Assembly & Senate and has been signed in law by Governor Cuomo. Next month I look forward to a more in-depth dive into what New York legalization will look like!

We appreciate your support and as always Choose Happy!
