CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS AT PENN STATE Local Food Guide
From the Editor There are so many reasons to love living here. When my big city friends ask me why we moved here 12 years ago and never looked back, I can wax for hours on the never-ending benefits of life in Happy Valley. Many are obvious—the beauty, the small town environment, the opportunities afforded by Penn State. The biggest surprise is usually the food. Living in the heart of thriving agricultural area like Centre County and surrounding regions like Big Valley is a dream come true if you value freshness and seasonality, and appreciate knowing where your food comes from. In addition to farmers markets, CSAs and local retail markets, a large number of locally-owned restaurants source their food from surrounding farms. How amazing is it that if you don’t feel like cooking, you can choose from a list of restaurants who serve local meats and cheese, produce, baked goods, and even beer and wine? Another element of our local food scene that’s often underestimated is the variety. As Penn State attracts more international students and families, our food landscape continues to evolve with authentic ethnic restaurants and markets. We’re also fortunate that local restaurants owners and chefs love to innovate and offer new options created from traditional, seasonal staples. Browse the listings in this guide and go on your own food adventure. One thing I can assure you after completing the Second Annual issue of the Happy Valley Food Guide—the local food scene isn’t only getting bigger, it’s getting better. Get out and enjoy it. Sincerely, Jodie Dello Stritto

The Birth of a Farmers’ Market
Bringing Fresh Produce to a Central Pennsylvania Food Desert By Cara Aungst Last summer, a farmers’ market started. Here in central Pennsylvania where warm weather months are charted by the foods that grow in them – from the just‑started‑summer‑vacation strawberries, to the hottest‑part‑of‑summer peaches, to the almost‑autumn sweet corn—this seems like nothing special. But the Rec Park Farmers’ Market, launched in the “food desert” of downtown Lewistown, begs to differ. Patty Neiner from Women’s Agricultural Network at Penn State tells us why. When Patty joined the Pennsylvania Women’s Agricultural Network (PA‑WAgN), she found that a farmer’s market promotion program grant had been written by her predecessor who was now on medical leave and unable to continue with the grant. Patty started to explore the idea herself – the grant, part of the 2007 Farm Bill, aimed to start a market in a ‘food desert’, a place defined as ‘an area where mainstream grocery stores are scarce or missing, many times in low‑income areas (although not everyone living in a food desert is poor).’ The new market would accept SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Acceptance Program) and FMNP (Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program) benefits, and would educate the community through cooking classes and nutrition classes.

Local Food Guide
Patty started to talk to members in the community and found that access to farmers’ markets was limited both to consumers and local farmer vendors. Many of the people she talked to were also interested in learning how to cook with food they could get at a market – they wanted to make nutritional food for their family, but their knowledge of preparing meals with seasonal foods was limited. With this research in hand, the team at PA‑WAgN started meeting with Community Partnerships RC&D; Downtown Lewistown, Inc.; Department of Human Services; and the Tri‑Valley Farmers’ Market officers to discuss ways to promote their market as well as set‑up a satellite market. Tri‑Valley Farmers’ Market was well established but needed signage to better promote their market, so after providing marketing materials, PA‑WAgN turned their focus to creating a satellite market. Through focus groups, they learned that consumers were looking for a greater variety of vendors at the new market so the group decided to launch Rec Park Farmers’ Market during hours that wouldn’t compete with existing markets and that would target the working class with evening availability. Word of the new market spread and new vendors quickly signed on. Mostly all of the Tri‑Valley vendors agreed to participate. All of the partners in this process worked at contacting other local agencies, advertisers, etc. to help promote the market. When Rec Park Farmers’ Market opened for the first time on June 5, 2012, 200 people came. “That’s the day I said to myself, this works,” Patty says. “It was great to see the level of cooperation between the community groups and the farmers who wanted to see the market grow.” The market featured herbs and fresh flowers, free‑range meats, milk and homemade cheese and ice cream alongside the seasonal fruits and vegetables. This was unique in Lewistown because of the larger shopping choice with a larger number of vendors. Instead of just shopping, it became an event – a place
where local farms and local shoppers connected. Funded by the grant, they were also able to offer a 10‑week‑long free CookShop which was taught by members of the community. The CookShop taught on topics like Perfect Market meats (with the free‑range meats available at the market), 7 Ways to Eat Zucchini, Veggie Cookout, Fresh Salsa and Pesto and Soup from Scratch. Held in the fully‑equipped kitchen of the community center that was adjacent to the market, the CookShop had more than 25 attendees each week who listened, learned, rolled up their sleeves and learned how to make salsas, baby food, black bean veggie burgers, tortillas, and more. Plans for the Summer 2013 market are already underway. It opens May 28, 2013 (hopefully with just‑picked local strawberries), and the free CookShop classes start in July. This summer there will be live music as well, thanks to a grant from the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts. The Rec Park Farmers Market is held Tuesdays from 3 p.m.‑7 p.m. For more information, find them on Facebook, or call Patty Neiner at 814‑865‑7031. The Rec Park Farmers’ Market is closed this winter, but not every farmers’ market in the area is seasonal. Within the Happy Valley area are several that operate throughout the winter. The Downtown Farmers’ Market meets in the State College Municipal Building lobby Fridays 11:30 a.m.‑5:00 p.m. The Bellefonte Farmers’ Market meets in the United Methodist Church on Spring Street Saturdays from 8 a.m ‑12 p.m. An indoor farmers’
market at the Old Gregg School in Spring Mills (106 School Street, Spring Mills, PA ) is held Saturdays from 10:00 a.m‑1:00 p.m. The Boalsburg Farmers’ Market is held indoors during winter months at the Boalsburg Fire Hall on Tuesdays from 2‑6 p.m. Way Fruit Farm at 2355 Halfmoon Valley Rd. Port Matilda, PA 16870 is open year‑round, as is Tait Farm located seven miles east of State College along 322. There is not as large a selection of produce in the winter, but some of the finds you can bag include red cabbage, green cabbage, carrots, celeriac, garlic, red onions, yellow onions, parsnips, red potatoes, yellow potatoes, watermelon radishes, daikon radishes, red beets, shallots, sweet potatoes and turnips. If you are buying from vendors with a greenhouse, you may find winter greens, spinach, mizuna, vitamin green, yukina savoy, kale and bok choy. Also, according to Patty Neiner, winter is a great time for meats. “Local grass‑fed meats taste so much better than [meat from] mass‑produced animals who do not have access to fresh grass, fresh air and room for exercise.” As for veggies, “root crops are in abundance over the winter, and soups and crock pot meals are an easy way to keep fresh, local vegetables on the table this winter.” Cara Aungst is from Belleville, but has an ongoing late fee at Schlow library. Her interest and affection for the Rec Park Farmers’ Market grew when she tasted that homemade peach ice cream.

Trader Joe’s Comes to Happy Valley By Cara Aungst I have always been a little too cynical to be a raving fan. I am sorry if I smirked at you while you were camped out on the sidewalk waiting for the premiere of Twilight, rolled my eyes at your “If God wasn’t a Penn State fan, why is the sky blue and white” bumper sticker, or snorted a little at your facebook play‑by‑play of the many merits of your new iPhone. I am sorry. I’ve changed. Now I’m one of you. I wish I could say that it took a long time to change me, but it didn’t. It only took one walk through the door—the exotic flowers and glossy vegetables on one side and the wall of trail mixes, dark chocolate goodies and “This Strawberry Walks into A Bar” cereal bars on the other—and I was hooked. It was Whole Foods without the pretense, Aldi without the sticky floors: a healthy, hipster low price haven of amazing food. That’s right, I am talking about Trader Joe’s. The bad thing was that the Trader Joe’s I discovered was in Columbus, Ohio. I packed a styrofoam cooler with Thai Vegetable Gyoza, garlic naan, dark chocolate roasted pistachio toffee and seaweed snacks and came back home. Before long, of course, the food ran out, but there was no Trader Joe’s to buy more. I am not proud to tell you that I drove a friend to the airport in Philadelphia so I could shop at the Trader Joe’s there.

When I found out that Trader Joe’s was coming to Happy Valley I was glad. And that may be an understatement. So what’s to love? Let me tell you: Location. The new Trader Joe’s Plaza is just off North Atherton Street, a stone’s throw from Chick‑Fil‑A, Wegman’s and Target, so checking it out is easy. Even inside the store, location and placement is convenient. One of the shoppers I interviewed said her favorite part was that she could reach everything easily – the shelves are low enough and freezer section displays everything at eye level. As with all Trader Joe’s, the store takes on the flavor of its town: the checkout lanes are labeled with street names like “Beaver” and “Atherton” rather than numbers, and a mural features familiar sights like the Lion Shrine. Price. Across‑the‑board low prices are great news for all shoppers from the college student to the coupon‑averse. In some cases, their organic produce is lower in price than non‑organic produce in other supermarkets. Ashley Henderson, from Reedsville, visited the store for the first time in January. She says, “The amount of fair trade, natural and organic products at reasonable prices was exciting.” Chelsea Donaldson, another first‑time shopper, was happy with the selection of hard‑to‑find items like vegan and vegetarian foods. Food. From plain, good food like their “Joe’s O’s” answer to Cheerios, sensibly‑priced organic offerings, to their gourmet treats like aged Havarti cheese and the crowd‑favorite Crunchy Speculoos Cookie Butter, Trader Joe’s smallish store has something for everyone from the picky preschool crowd to serious foodies. Their website has a section dedicated to recipes using only their ingredients. While this isn’t a particularly new idea, the gourmand nature of the ingredients and end results set them in a niche all their own. Samples. The sample stand at the back of the store always offers a hot drink like coffee or cider, and a sample of the day like mac and cheese, pumpkin ravioli (I taste it in my dreams), or chicken tortilla soup. This is a great place to taste something and then be brave enough to make it yourself.

Just Take a Bite: Food Adventures in Happy Valley By Cara Aungst In this world there are people whose idea of “adventurous eating” is trying a new topping to their pizza, and there are people whose idea of “adventurous eating” is trying a thousand year egg and chicken foot soup. So what happens if those two disparate souls should meet, fall in love, and get married? To change the old proverb, a fish and a bird may fall in love, but what will they eat? Well, I will tell you, because I know. First of all, not all ethnic food (read: something your mama didn’t make) is going to be outside your comfort zone. Here are some tips to get the most out of your experience: »» Find an ingredient you already like and try it in a new dish. I think you might like it. »» If it is your first time trying a new ethnic restaurant, look for menu items with terms like “most popular”
12
Local Food Guide
or “recommended,” like Pad Thai at Cozy Thai Bistro. It is upscale comfort food and it is almost impossible not to like. »» If something says ‘spicy’ or ‘hot’, steer clear your first time unless you are feeling particularly bold! Every culture has its own spices as well as its own meter of hotness. Just because you like hot wings, you may not dig sriracha sauce. Once you know the dishes you like, you can spice it up. The same goes for raw fish, or thousand year eggs for that matter. Try it the second time you go. Find something you are pretty sure you are going to enjoy, and try it! One of my favorite “just try this” restaurants is Cozy Thai Bistro at 232 S. Allen Street. A sampler platter and a steaming bowl of their almost impossible‑to‑dislike Pad Thai has won over several friends. Herwig’s Austrian Bistro at 132 W. College Ave. is another— authentic food, great atmosphere, and family-owned. Other great area choices include Rey Azteca on 485 Benner Pike, Ni Hao Asian Fusion Restaurant at 255 Northland Ctr., Kimchi Korean Restaurant at 1100 N. Atherton St., Olde New York Restaurant (featuring old world cuisine) at 2298 E. College Ave., and India Pavilion at 222 E. Calder Way. So whatever happened to the fish and bird who fell in love? The volcano sushi roll at Sakura is a current date‑night favorite, if that’s any indication.
Harrison’s
Local chef sources locally & seasonally for globally‑inspired menus There’s a surprising discovery in this college town and you don’t want to miss it. Harrison’s Wine Grill – a modern, chef‑centric restaurant unexpectedly located inside the Hilton Garden Inn on East College Avenue – is a casual favorite for local foodies. Restaurant
Whether a visitor or a local you might be likely to drive right by, not realizing the imagination to be found off a hotel lobby. But do stop because you will go well beyond the every day experience when you dine here. This independently‑owned restaurant offers delicious, globally‑inspired dishes made by a chef who, after beginning his career here in State College, apprenticed and worked with well‑known chefs in San Francisco, Berkeley, Chicago, and Napa Valley. Chef Harrison Schailey has created his own signature style over the years by marrying fresh, local ingredients with flavors, culinary ideas and techniques from a myriad of countries and cultures. In addition to world casual menu favorites, Schailey creates special menus each month featuring seasonal and regional foods: a popular Rustic Italian feature in February/March, “Spice!” a Southeast Asian Fusion menu will be featured in April, and fresh soft shelled crabs prepared three ways in June. Additionally, Harrison’s Wine
Grill puts a fresh twist on traditional lunch and dinner favorites, such as Mac and Cheese made with local Amish‑produced Goot Essa cheddar and locally‑made Fasta Fusili or simple and satisfying Batter‑Fried Fish and Chips. Six ever‑changing homemade soups are always available, as well as a dessert menu, wine list with wines by the glass, full service bar, and local microbrews on tap. Voted “Best Wait Staff” 2011, Harrison’s well‑trained crew consistently provides knowledgeable and friendly service in a chic, comfortable setting. The recently updated décor is ideal for entertaining with friends, date nights, business meetings, and family gatherings. Large groups can also be accommodated with call‑ahead seating. Catering
Harrison’s Catering has been voted “Best Caterer” for eight years running (2005‑2013) by the readers of State College Magazine because of the custom design, service and high‑quality foods that mirror the restaurant’s offerings. Delivered business lunches keep Harrison’s Catering especially busy, plus special occasion events like upscale cocktail receptions, alumni events, and weddings. Harrison’s affiliation with Nittany Co‑op (FPA) has resulted in daily catering for local fraternities. Open daily for lunch and dinner, Harrison’s is a casual, local favorite and comes highly recommended by customers who have posted on Trip Advisor and other websites. Gamble Mill Gains in Popularity, Offers Additional Bar Space to Feature Craft‑Brewed Beers Even more good news is coming out of Bellefonte’s The Gamble Mill Restaurant and Microbrewery. Once known for upscale dining, “the Mill” started a steady transformation under the ownership of Dave Fonash and Paul Kendeffy who purchased the historic location in 2008. The pair, who also own State College’s Zola New World Bistro, brought just the right of innovation to the restaurant while maintaining the history and tradition that have made the Gamble Mill a local landmark. With the addition of a Microbrewery in 2010—

led by Head Brewer and State College native Mike Smith—the restaurant gained popularity as an ‘any night’ dining option. Lured by exceptional craft brewed beer and, in part, a more casual menu offered in the restaurant’s Tavern area, customers no longer need a special occasion to enjoy the Mill’s locally‑sourced, chef‑prepared menu and one‑of‑a‑kind atmosphere. To accommodate its growing customer base and dedicate more space to feature its beer, the Gamble Mill recently completed a renovation to a large portion of its second‑floor dining room. The space now includes a large bar, a seating area, and space for live music—a unique addition to Bellefonte. Like the Tavern, the upstairs bar will offer both the Tavern menu and the dining room menu. Both menus change with seasonal options, which come from local farms and merchants, and offer the Mill’s traditional favorites year‑round. Reservations are recommended, especially with the excitement surrounding the new bar area. The Gamble Mill is open Monday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sundays from 4 p.m.‑ 9 p.m.
The Inn at Nittany Summit The Inn At Mount Nittany Summit, formerly known as Mount Nittany Inn is an historical part of State College, PA. Around since the 1920s and just eight miles from downtown State College, it is known for its country style comfort food and rustic antique feeling, not to mention the amazing view of the valley. The Inn has gone through several exciting changes throughout the years. The Inn had been closed due to fires, and reopened in 2008. At that time, the owners decided to take the Inn in a new direction. They closed the rooms that they had in there and decided to open a banquet hall in order to accommodate parties, weddings and other local events. More recently, the new management team, Rebecca Larsen and Cody Wolfe redesigned the menu to excite the taste buds, while still keeping the rustic feel of the Inn. Her goal was to put the Inn back on the map. She wanted to keep it simple, give it a fresh look, yet not lose the country feel that people have been enjoying since the beginning. In addition, the Inn recently added a new sous chef, Aaron Swartz. He joined chef Jeremiah McClanahan, who has been with the restaurant since he was fourteen (He had started as a dishwasher, left to
join the military and go to culinary school and then returned as a chef in 2008). According to Rebecca, the dynamic duo have the same style of cooking and bring their love of the outdoors into the refined, rustic dishes that they make. Of course, one has to ask, what goes into the food? Rebecca revealed that they tend to source ingredients locally. Some of their favorite places to visit for food include Tait Farms, Stone Meadow Farms, Hogs Galore as well as several local bakeries. For beer and wine, their go to places include Elk Creek Cafe and several of the local wineries. Rebecca adds that they are always forming new relationships with people in the area by visiting farmer’s markets and other local food places. So what are some of the top dishes that The Inn serves? Rebecca was more than happy to share some of her favorites: »» The crab cakes and anything with crab or seafood »» The steaks »» The new burger menu, which contains steak burgers »» The smoked salmon »» The weekend brunch menu »» Venison medallions »» French pork chops »» Homemade salad dressings If you like the country food being cooked with local ingredients and a place rich with history with a breathtaking view of Happy Valley like no other restaurant, visit the Inn.

Bellefonte’s Pizza Mia is a NYC‑Born Italian Girl’s Taste of Home By Sammi Turano
As an Italian woman from New York, I live my life with the three Fs: Fashion, Fun and Food. As anyone from the Big Apple can tell you, its pizza is legendary and a tough act to follow when it comes to replicating it. (I am sure Chicago people would agree as well, but I have never been there or tried their pizza, so I can’t comment on that). This is why I was a bit apprehensive when I was told how fabulous the fare at Pizza Mia in Bellefonte was. All I can say after trying it is: paint me red and call me cynical! This has been some of the best pizza I have tasted since I left

New York five years ago, and something I can’t wait to try again soon. I ordered a 10‑inch pizza‑‑half plain and half with banana peppers and bacon, an Italian sub, a stuffed portabella mushroom and a berry dessert pizza. Let’s start with the pizza. The crust was the right combination of soft, fresh Italian bread (another New York staple that I miss) and just enough crispiness and spice to give it an extra kick. The whole milk cheese used is fresh and melted, making it the perfect marriage for any toppings added to the pizza (all of which are fresh!) It certainly gives the saying “awesome wrapped in bacon” a whole new meaning! The portabella mushroom was covered with mozzarella cheese, garlic and tomatoes. It reminded me of a pizza, but atop a mushroom instead of a crust. The cheese is perfectly melted and the spice ratio is spot on. I especially loved the tomatoes added for an extra bit of flavor. My only complaint is that I wanted more once I’d finished it! Onto the Italian sub. Again, as a New York girl, I am very picky about my sandwiches. Anyone from New York knows that it is the best place to get sandwiches. Well, now I can say that there is some competition for my favorite NYC deli. The meats taste as if they were from a meat market; while the bread tastes as if it came straight from the oven: soft, fluffy and nothing short of fabulous. Add some lettuce, tomato and oils and you have a sandwich fit for a king! I finished my meal with a berry pizza. It is on a sugary crust with fresh berries, comes with a berry sauce on top and vanilla icing on the side. One bite and I was in heaven. There is nothing in this world like a fresh berry pastry...tonight I plan on finishing off my leftovers and adding some ice cream on top for an even better experience. Pizza Mia is an Italian’s dream come true, and nothing short of a taste of home for an Italian from New York. Between the friendly atmosphere, the delicious food and comfortable setting, there is no place in the area I would rather go to relive my childhood days of going out for pizza with my family.

What’s New in Local Food By Callie Eardley Happy Valley’s local food scene is thriving and growing—great news for residents and visitors alike! Here are just a few new or newer places, products and vendors to check out. The Greek—while it’s been around for a little more than a year, this authentic Greek restaurant is still on the best kept secret list, especially if you only visit a few times a year. After many years of serving the best American breakfast in Happy Valley, the original Waffle Shop’s founder, John Dimakopoulos, now brings his traditional Greek cuisine to you. You’ll find all your traditional favorites on the menu, plus a few items so authentic they’ll be new to you. Located right behind the Original Waffle Shoppe on North Atherton, The Greek is open from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday. As their website says, “When we say authentic, we mean it!” And they aren’t kidding. Ni Hao—For Asian-fusion food in a modern atmosphere, check out Ni Hao Asian Cuisine in Northland Center. The buffet made its debut in January 2013, and boasts a dim sum bar, a sushi bar with over 30 different varieties, and a stir fry bar, where patrons choose their own fresh ingredients as well as the method of preparation (wok, grill or hibachi), which chefs cook on-demand in the open kitchen. The trendy interior features cool blue lighting, sleek mosaic patterns and abstract wall designs. Don Patron Mexican Grill—The popular Don Patron chain will bring a taste of Mexico to State College with their newest location at 1653 N. Atherton St., formerly Cici’s Pizza in the Wal-Mart Plaza. Don Patron will offer specials on food and drinks, including Mexican beer, wine and margaritas, as well as more family-friendly fare. “You won’t be disappointed,” promises Don Patron’s business manager, Adrian Trevino. The location will open in the first quarter of 2013. Jorge Bravo, a representative from the Belle Vernon restaurant, says that Don Patron prides itself on quick service, which will be beneficial for families on the go and and for students grabbing meals between classes. Noodles & Co.—Pasta is the ultimate comfort food, and the Downtown State College location of the Noodles chain is just as warm and welcoming. It’s no surprise that Parents magazine ranked Noodles & Co. among the 10 Best Restaurant Chains, because their menu offers something for everyone. Items range from truffle mac-and-cheese, to Pad 28

Thai and Lo Mein, to traditional soups, salads and sandwiches. The restaurant follows the “fast casual” dining trend: after ordering, waiters bringing your dish to you within a few minutes. Noodles & Co. is located on the west side of College Ave. Duo—Fans of Cajun and Creole cuisine are cheering on Duo, which opened at 129 South Pugh St. site of the former Lulu’s. Crawfish, gumbo, jambalaya, and alligator tail are prepared by a chef with 16 years of experience in New Orleans. Patrons say it’s authentic Louisiana-style cooking at its finest. The upscale restaurant also offers catering. Webster’s Bookstore Café (reopened in new location) –“Eating food away from home shouldn’t be a life-shortening experience,” according to the owners of the newly-reopened Webster’s. Their goal is to “provide good, real food, prepared fresh with local and organic products whenever possible.” The surprisingly extensive menu includes quiches, hummus dishes, cheese melts with Gemelli Bakery bread, and desserts from Sweet Indulgence. Webster’s also offers a full line of organic Fair Trade coffee and espresso drinks and teas. Their new location at 133 E. Beaver is twice the size of the former Allen St. store, and has a used bookstore with over 10,000 titles, Stax of Trax Record Shop, and community events such as open mics, book readings and yoga. Joie de Crepe—For a taste of Europe, visit Joie de Crepe at 428 E. College Ave. The menu includes gourmet crepes and waffles inspired by French and German cuisine, as well as both sweet and savory options with fresh ingredients like pesto, avocado, salmon, goat cheese, fruit, and of course Nutella. Everything on the menu is under $10. This locally-owned restaurant also offers locally-produced teas, coffee, vegetarian options, wait service, and outdoor seating. Aardvark Kafe—The Aardvark Café has accomplished a tremendous feat—satisfying both vegans and meat-lovers alike! Located in the former Original Italian Pizza at 906 W. College Ave., the café serves food from both the OIP menu (pizza, subs and fries) as well as from its own vegan menu,
SPOT +1
with homemade black bean burgers in pocket-style bread, tofu, hummus, and more. Affordable prices in a rustic café atmosphere make the Aardvark a great spot for students, families and professionals on the go. Pho 11—Pho was ranked the 28th most delicious food in the world by CNNGo.com, but how many people in Happy Valley have tried it? You have the perfect opportunity to taste this flavorful Vietnamese dish of broth, noodles, meat, corriander and onions, served with sides of bean sprouts, teas, and popular sauces like sriracha and hoisin. Pho 11 assistant manager Michael Chau says he is working to fill the void in Vietnamese food in the State College area— loyal patrons will tell you he’s succeeding. Pho 11 is located on Atherton St. near the Greyhound Bus station. Trader Joe’s—After its much-anticipated arrival, Trader Joe’s has enjoyed steady traffic at its North Atherton location, including a frenzy of college students hoping to take advantage of its lower prices and organic selection. In a location that has since been nicknamed “Trader Joe’s Plaza” at 243 Patriot Lane, the store features a whimsical State-themed mural, as well as checkout lines with names like “Nittanyville” and “Atherton.” As promised, Trader Joe’s offers great prices on fresh produce, including many organics, and staples like cereal, bread, and snacks. Check out some of their specialty items like
frozen chocolate-covered banana slices and flavored trail and nut mixes. Chrome—Trendy, laid-back atmosphere? Check. Hookah lounge? Check. Hip-hop DJ entertainment? Check. Cocktail bar? Check. Chrome Lounge is a unique presence in State College. Currently serving appetizers such as hummus and pita chips, Chrome will expand its menu within the next few months to include Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. Coming Soon! El Jalisco—Fans of comida mexicana will also want to visit El Jalisco, an offshoot of the Pennsylvania chain, Rey Azteca, which also has a popular location in State College, across from the Nittany Mall. According to Rey Azteca manager Mary Foust, El Jalisco (named after a coastal Mexican state, and literally translated as “the shrimp”) will feature authentic dishes similar to those popular on Rey Azteca’s menu, including chicken flautas and sizzling fajitas. El Jalisco will open in the former Otto’s location on North Atherton. Sad to See You Go! This year we said goodbye to Downtown favorite *ndulge Cupcake Boutique. The owners moved their unique bakery to the Philadelphia area. We’ll miss their unique cupcake flavors, like root beer, cream soda and tiramisu.

The Hublersburg Inn: Come for the Food, Stay for the Charm Walking into the Hublersburg Inn is like coming home after a long day. You might even fall in love with the place before stepping foot inside—the big, old front porch with rockers and the way it sits so close to the road give you an immediate sense of the Inn’s history. Just inside the door, the long, spacious bar and the warm dining room with a large stone fireplace invite you to sit, get comfy and take in the easy, rustic atmosphere. Or venture out onto the patio surrounded by large maple trees and green grass. You’ll feel like you’ve been going there all your life, even if it’s your first visit, and it’s easy to understand why there are so many “regulars”! Drink Up The bar features an impressive array of craft brews on tap, including selections from local breweries like Otto’s & Elk Creek, plus numerous signature

cocktails and martini’s, including a Peanut Butter Pie Martini fashioned after their famous peanut butter pie dessert! Or try bartender, Darren Provan’s signature Provan Punch – a summertime favorite. The Inn also has a very nice selection of local wines from Seven Mountains Winery and Juniata Valley Winery. To accompany your beverage, sample from the appetizer menu and try the Crab Chips – homemade seasoned potato chips with lump crabmeat, fresh salsa, guacamole, white beans, melted cheddar jack cheeses - you probably won’t ever go back to regular nachos. Their lightly fried calamari is perfectly tender and served with two dipping sauces or try the Spicy Garlic Ranch chicken dip which seems to be a crowd pleaser. It’s a Wing Thing On Wednesday nights it’s obvious by the packed house that it’s Wing Night - The Hublersburg Inn is the reigning Tussey Mountain Wingfest Champion and placed 1st runner up the prior four years. Rootbeer Bourbon BBQ, Sweet & Spicy, Thai BBQ are popular sauces but their Spicy Garlic Ranch wing sauce is the favorite and has found use as a condiment on everything from burgers to fries to cheesesteaks to dips. It might be more popular than ketchup someday! Inn Specialties The full menu offers just enough variety without being overwhelming, so you can always find just the right meal to match your mood. Many of their
ingredients come from local purveyors like Good Essa Cheeses (which is located in Hublersburg!), Ardry’s Potato’s (neighboring Snydertown), Hogs Galore pork products (Philipsburg), Suhey Peppers (State College) are just a few. Owner Andi Heidt Biddle and Chef Scott Witmer, both formerly of the Gamble Mill, enjoy finding great local products and incorporating them into daily features and menu staples alike. Here are some of our favorites: »» The Bourbon Salmon has just the right amount of bourbon glaze and the citrus acidity of the homemade pineapple salsa balances the sweetness of the glaze perfectly. »» The Snydertown Cheesesteak with melted swiss, carmelized onions, and spicy garlic ranch sauce is so tender, so melt-in-your-mouth gooey, so… perfect. You can also get a regular Philly if you’re not that adventuresome. »» Thursday night is burger night—all their ½ pound Certified Angus Beef burgers on the menu are just $4.99 with toppings additional. The “Hubie” Burger is the king with fried onions, fries, provolone, lettuce, tomato and spicy garlic ranch. »» If you like “homestyle” cooking try coming on Sunday when they have their Sunday Dinner Feature – either Turkey Dinner, Ham Dinner or Roast Beef Dinner - changes monthly or Mondays are Chicken and Waffles night which is a hit as well!
»» In addition to many appetizers, sandwiches, burgers and entrees, the Inn has a nice selection of salads – their Legendary Hublersburg Salad created 30 years ago by former owners, a grilled Caesar salad, and a Spinach salad all of which can be served with your choice of protein – crabcake, chicken, ball steak, salmon to name a few options. Don’t Forget Dessert All of the Hublersburg Inn’s desserts are house made by Pastry Girl/Waitress Whitney Emel and change according to season – red velvet cheesecake, coconut cream pie, triple berry crisp are a few you might find. The most popular is their peanut butter pie – just the right creamy texture and peanut butter flavor with an chocolate cookie crust – plan on having some extra forks for this one! A Delicious Adventure Despite its charming country location, The Hublersburg Inn is on route 64 just 6 miles from the Lamar exit of I-80, about 18 miles from both State College and Lock Haven, and very convenient to neighboring Bellefonte. If you haven’t experienced the Hublersburg Inn, or if it’s been a while since your last visit, you’re missing out on a true Happy Valley gem. Call for information or preferred seating: 814-383-2616

Fresh Eats and Delicious Treats Pizza Shop Owner Adds Caterer to Resume to Satisfy Demand
With all of the scary headlines about additives and preservatives in our food today, the staff at HappyValley.com knows the importance of fresh ingredients and sustainable food. That’s why we like to frequent Pizza Mia in Bellefonte, where owner John Jennings is committed to using the freshest ingredients to win the hearts of pizza lovers from all across the country. He describes his pizza as having a crust thick enough to please a Chicago native, with a taste that appeals to the palate of a New Yorker. Every dish is cooked from scratch using only the freshest ingredients used (including whole milk mozzarella, which every Italian foodie knows is an essential). The use of fresh ingredients doesn’t stop at Pizza Mia. People are so in love with the food there that John is often asked to cater events. Hence, Happy Valley

Catering was born! With a similar menu to Pizza Mia, the business caters events all over the State College area. Although he is cooking for a much larger crowd than he does with each individual order at Pizza Mia, it doesn’t mean he is cutting corners. He still makes sure the quality of the food (as well as what goes into it) is the very best. He even special orders his ingredients to guarantee that everything he cooks satisfies his clients. For example, at a catered holiday dinner for a local business, he made sure the turkey was Pennsylvania certified and as fresh as possible. He even joked that he hunted it himself. Everyone was amazed to see that a catered meal could be made using the very best ingredients he could find. His adventures don’t stop there. In addition to running Pizza Mia and Happy Valley Catering, John is also in the process of expanding the Pizza Mia franchise. While he did not give away many details (some things have to be a surprise for his fans!), he did tell us that one of his plans is to offer Kids Eat Free Mondays. So the next time you’re in the mood for some delicious food made from the freshest ingredients, look no further than John Jennings to prepare your meal – whether it’s nightly dinner for your family or a special event for your large gathering. For your next big event, call John Jennings at Happy Valley Catering by Pizza Mia. Your guests will be delighted!

A Market in Winter: Farmers Markets Move Indoors During Cold Months By Callie Eardly
A Market in Winter Did you know that Pennsylvania hosts more winter farmers markets than any other state besides New York and California (source: National Farmers Market Directory)? Happy Valley is no exception to this rule with its own bustling local food scene, even in the prime of winter season. Don’t let the cold keep you away from fresher, healthier food. James Eisenstein, a former Penn State professor of Poli Sci and Crime, Law & Justice, says, “More and more restaurants are using local ingredients. Almost everything we eat is produced locally, something that was impossible as recently as 10 years ago. But freshness is critical to nutrition and taste, and most local growers also minimize the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Finally, customers know that when they buy at a farmers market, they are strengthening the local economy. It’s an exciting and positive
“[If you don’t go to farmers markets], you’re missing out on a lot of fun and good things to eat.” - Lois development.” After retiring from Penn State in 2005, Eisenstein went on to be an “unpaid field hand” at his son John’s certified organic vegetable farm, Jade Family Farms. In addition to helping his family sell their products at the Boalsburg market, James also contributes his media relations and event planning skills. “Harvesting eggplant sure beats grading Blue Books,” Eisenstein admits. Cold Weather Selection Running a farmers market in this climate does present a bit of a challenge, but Eisenstein assures that there is still “an amazing diversity of products available,” including: »» Bread »» Milk (traditional cow’s plus goat’s milk) »» Cheese and yogurt »» Pasture-raised meats »» Wild Alaskan salmon products (from Wild for Salmon in Bloomsburg), 36

A surprising variety of vegetables are also available in November and December, including Asian greens, salad mix, kale, kohlrabi, and spinach. Cabbage, potatoes, and root vegetables (radish and carrots) can be found into January and longer. Come for the food, Stay for the Community Indoor markets also provide a warmer, more social atmosphere than a trip to the grocery store, often providing space for vendors and customers to connect and get to know each other. “It is easy to know customers, especially those who shop frequently,” says Lois Stringer, secretary of the Bellefonte Farmers Market Association. “The newbies and visitors add some extra spice to the mix. Some customers become friends. Some vendors have been at the market over 20 years, and others new each year. Each brings something unique.” The indoor market in Bellefonte at Trinity United Methodist Church on Spring Street offered coffee and other warm beverages, encouraging customers to linger. The customer-vendor relationship also motivates vendors to serve their highest-quality products. “When you buy from someone you know and see face-to-face, a relationship is established that builds trust and mutual regard. Producers realize that their reputation is the foundation of their success,” says Eisenstein. Gigi’s Restaurant and Wine Lounge: Not Your Typical Fine‑Dining Experience Happy Valley’s newest fine dining option, Gigi’s Res‑ taurant & Wine Lounge, is not just a restaurant; it is a destination. It is where old world sophistication meets modern elegance. Where classic American cuisine meets contemporary fare. Located in the former Prospector’s building on Cato Avenue, General Manager Kyle Emmett and his staff have completely transformed a BBQ joint to a unique fine dining atmosphere that has something for anyone looking for a great spot to enjoy some even better food. The dining room boasts a classic American style, while the contemporary Ultra Lounge features a bar and raised mezzanine seating areas that are perfect for private parties and happy hours. Diners can also enjoy meals on the patio area in warmer months, overlooking
a fire‑water fountain. “Must Have” Eats and More. While the atmosphere is enough to draw anyone in, you’ve got to come to Gigi’s for its real star: the food. Several menu items have been featured and named “must haves” by writers and critics in the area, including Lobster Mac n’ Cheese (also a best seller among patrons!), Filet Carpaccio, and Scallops (Gigi’s offers both a trio of scallops prepared three ways, and a scallop entree over mushroom risotto). And you’ve got to try the newest menu addition: Crispy Pork Belly, which is locally sourced through Hog’s Galore and smoked in‑house by Executive Chef Jeremy Naugle. The Inspiration. Each team member behind Gigi’s brings great skill and experience. Executive Chef Jeremy Naugle knows the area and the benefits of local sourcing well. Another chef has worked for award‑winning restaurants in New Orleans, and another brings experience in southern California cuisine. Through this blend of backgrounds, Gigi’s creates truly unique flavors and experiences for its guests. The Best Time to Sample. The food and service is great at any time of the day, but Gigi’s 3‑4‑5 happy hour is a great chance to experience the atmosphere and unique tastes while keeping a few dollars in your wallet. Happy hour runs 3:45 to 6:45 p.m. daily and features $3 select 23 oz. drafts or Filet Tenderloins, $4 Absolut cocktails or House Made Meatball Trio, and $5 glasses of wine or Flatbread Pizzas. The Overlooked Side of B&Bs The “Breakfast” at a Bed & Breakfast is a Tantalizing Treat for Your Taste Buds
Bed and breakfasts are often a welcome change‑of‑pace option in lodging, compared to the been‑there, done‑that of mainstream hotels. Often, B&Bs are chosen for the unique and quaint ambience they provide. The atmosphere and personality behind any B&B is a supplement to part of the namesake, those delicious breakfasts. Not everyone considers the breakfast part of their B&B stay when deciding on their accommodations. But once you try the morning meal, you’ll find the B&B experience is a tantalizing treat for your taste buds, too. Imagine it: Eggs Benedict served on the Royal Worcester, Evesham china with a homemade hollandaise that makes your mouth water just by its smell. The perfectly‑blended sauce has a perfect balance of lemon

and mustard (sometimes Herlocher’s), topped with a sprig of cilantro from the garden. The vegetables and herbs used are often straight out of the back garden at The Queen, A Victorian Bed & Breakfast, where Nancy Noll is the wonderfully disarming hostess and owner.
When you walk into The Queen, A Victorian B&B, it is a step back in time to the Victorian days. Stereoscopes, a player piano and a phonograph will take you to another time. The Victorian charm abounds, and Nancy can lead you through the history of the Bed and Breakfast then give you a tour of Bellefonte. From the seven Governors tour, the architecture tour to the Black History of Bellefonte tour, her knowledge of the area is extensive. Coming down in the morning to a beautiful table set with fine china for breakfast is a great start to a day of luxurious lodging. At The Queen, there are different sets for every season of the year. The bountiful spread that Nancy provides is inviting and delicious, with fresh strawberry and banana compote served in red glassware as just one of the treats guests may wake up to find. Weather permitting, breakfast is served on the patio by the waterfall and perennial gardens. One guest said on the last day of her visit, “I keep hoping that tomorrow when I wake up, Nancy will somehow be at my home serving me breakfast on fine china.” Nancy goes above and beyond to make guests feel pampered and ready to start their day. At the Chatelaine Bed and Breakfast, located in Pine Grove Mills, you’ll be welcomed by Mae McQuade with a warm smile. The home, beautifully decorated with paintings done by Mae’s own children, makes you feel like you’re living in a fairy tale. The foyer wall is covered in an elaborate, detailed painting of many gorgeous birds. The swan room is fit for a princess and her prince charming. The large dining room is filled with china sets for creating a fairy tale setting, or sitting back with friends to enjoy the country view. Breakfast at The Chatelaine may be served to you on the Orange Spode Fleur de Lis china with Orange Japanese Chargers, which is simply lovely even before it has the morning’s delightful meal on it. The elegant silver tea and coffee service will be waiting for you, as will your strawberries with cracked pepper and balsamic. Then Mae will bring out the croissant French toast farci with orange sauce and sausages, or

blue flower omelets and Amish bacon when the chives are in bloom. There may even be some gluten‑free chocolate toppers served with your coffee. Mae prides herself in being able to cater to any food allergies or dietary preferences her guests may have. The corned beef hash with poached eggs and hollandaise, tiny tomatoes, gluten free bagels with cream cheese and lox works deliciously for those trying to avoid gluten. Mae might even take you, by way of her fantastic culinary skills, to her southwestern homeland and serve huevos rancheros with sopapillas and honey. Whatever she brings from her kitchen, you can be sure you will start your day with a very happy palate and stomach. Other Bed and Breakfasts in the area offer morning meals as fitting accompaniments to delightful accommodations. The Bed and Breakfast at The Rock Gar‑ den in Boalsburg serves a hearty American breakfast that you can enjoy on the wraparound porch with a view of Mt. Nittany or in the stunning perennial gardens in the warmer months. The Hublersburg Inn will provide you with a full hot breakfast in the dining room, or on the patio or porch with a gorgeous view of the surrounding Amish farmlands. There is also the breathtaking Mountain Hideaway Bed and Breakfast, nestled in the heart of Black Moshannon forest, that will take you away from it all. You can unwind to the surrounding sounds – wind whispering, birds singing and water falling – while you enjoy your breakfast on the deck overlooking tree‑cloaked hills as far as the eye can see.
