Our Schools, Our Community:
Partnering to Invest in Local Students The State College Area School District relies on taxpayer dollars to fulfill its mission to prepare students for lifelong success through excellence in education. As the world becomes more connected and demands better educated and more insightful and highly skilled workers, the Where support comes from: district is seeking to provide innovative and individualized opportunities for growth and success.
In partnership with Special EITC Individual our alumni and contributions events donations (Educational Improvethe community— ment Tax Credits) individuals, families and businesses who believe in the value of strong public schools—the SCASD Education Foundation helps to fund these student opportunities. By supplementing the district’s budget and deepening the partnership between our schools and our local residents, the foundation ensures that community support is invested here, in our neighborhood schools and their students. Since its inception just three years ago, the foundation has cultivated a dedicated group of supporters from the State College area and from among the vast network of State High alumni. These supporters have: • Made direct annual contributions • Donated through Pennsylvania’s tax credit program • Attended our signature event, the Maroon & Gray Society Banquet In all, since 2014, <total donors> donors have partnered with us, and we are thankful for each and every one of them. I’m pleased to present the following report of the 2017‑18 fiscal year, and look forward to partnering with you in the future to invest in a valuable resource: our students. Tax Credit Program Funds Innovative New Programs In 2017‑18, the foundation secured $60,250 in EITC donations from local busi‑ nesses and individuals. These funds are dedicated to two innovative programs that provide value‑added benefits to students:
Oracle Academy Oracle Academy is a globally focused computer science education curriculum. Programmers and Programming Technicians are at the top of the national, state, and local high priority occupations lists. The addition of Oracle Academy will help graduates fill the demand for these careers. The program will include: • Programming Fundamentals • Introduction to Computer Programming Languages • Advanced Computer Programming/AP Computer • Databases Design and Programming • C++ Programming • AP Computer Science Principles
K‑5 STEM curriculum This project emerged from comprehensive outreach to the community, including eight focus groups with parents; eight focus groups with teachers; and a survey of students, parents, and teachers. To help create the K‑5 STEM curriculum the district is utilizing the Engineering is Elementary (EiE) curriculum resource. EiE is the preeminent curriculum resource for engineering at the elementary school level. The program includes cultural and cross‑curricular connections and fosters high‑level student engagement through a five step engineering design process (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve). In addition to drawing from EiE, the district is developing learning experiences that include robotics and coding, along with alignment to grade‑level science and mathematics curricula.
If you are a Pennsylvania business owner, or a Pennsylvania resident, and you want to donate your state tax dollars to the SCASD Education Foundation, contact Executive Director Paul Olivett at 814‑883‑8067 or pgo11@scasd.org. First National Bank supports the SCASD Education Foundation through EITC
What is EITC? Pennsylvania is one of a handful of states that offers the opportunity for individuals and businesses to earn tax credits for making a contribution to an approved education improvement organization, such as a public school foundation, through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program. Businesses and individuals apply to the program and, if approved, make a contribution for which they receive 90% in credits toward their state tax liability. In order to receive EITC funds, school foundations must be a 501(c)3 non‑profit and must receive state approval on projects that will be funded. THANK YOU to the following individuals and businesses who donated to the SCASD Education Foundation through EITC in 2017‑18: First National Bank of Pennsylvania (pictured below) Douglas Loviscky Steven and Penni Fishbaine Brian and Chloe Kissinger Comcast Corporation Central Penn Vision Associates, PC
Strike up the Band:
First annual Maroon & Gray Society Banquet sponsored by Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates and Massaro CM Services was a Success! A sold‑out crowd clapped along to the State High Fight Song when the marching band made a surprise appearance at this inaugural fundraising event. Held May 19 at the Ramada Hotel & Conference Center, the Maroon & Gray Society Banquet, presented by Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates and Massaro CM Services, celebrated its first class of honorees and made a special appeal for support for new band uniforms. Through sponsorships, program ads, ticket sales and individual pledges, the event raised nearly $60,000 toward the purchase of new marching band uniforms. The foundation offers special thanks to local broadcaster and State High alumnus Jeff Byers who served as emcee; event planner and State High alumna Cori Agostinelli who served as event coordinator; and planning committee members Chris Buchignani, Carol Grim and Mary Kay Montovino. In addition, much appreciation to State High musical groups, including the SCAHS Jazz Combo, SCAHS Chamber Orchestra, SCAHS Chamber Singers, and members of the SCAHS Marching Band, who provided entertainment throughout the evening.

Annual donations help to support a robust educational experience, which includes a rigorous, competitive curriculum, innovative tools and resources, and enriching extracurricular activities for students in the State College Area School District each and every year. Thank you for enhancing learning opportunities for local students with your annual donation. In 2017-18, funds supported: • A General Student Opportunities Fund that supports a grant fund for teachers to develop new classroom and student programs that enhance curricular learning • The Bill Cahir Memorial Scholarship Fund for Journalism, which provides funds to journalism students to attend journalism competitions and university based journalism summer camps • The Sweet Potato Classic, which helps to support Memorial Field renovation • 3D Printers for middle schools • Boy’s Lacrosse uniforms • Cheerleading uniforms • Baseball infield renovations • Musical instruments • High School Marquee donation from the State High PTSO

New in 2018‑19: Student Opportunities Grants Generous donations to the SCASD Education Foundation, and support from a growing number of individuals, families and businesses, are creating meaningful and valuable experiences for students. With your help, we can do even more. As the foundation got off the ground, faculty and staff from across the district reached out to us to share their ideas for projects and initiatives that could benefit students, if only extra funding was available. Could we help? We can! Beginning in 2018‑19, the Student Opportunities Grant Program will award funds for projects and initiatives based on maximum impact, innovation and creativity. Faculty and staff will apply through a formal process that evaluates projects based on the goal of expanding learning and extracurricular opportunities beyond what is possible in the existing school budgets. Student Opportunities grants will help to assure that your gifts to the SCASD Education Foundation make a direct and significant effect on students. We are eager and excited to launch this program with support from you and the SCASD community.
