Fall/Winter 2018 Fun Guide

From the Publisher

Over 160 years ago, a group of pioneering leaders, strong and great, assembled in the Nittany Valley and began an experiment in higher education. They planted seeds that blossomed into a proud identity we celebrate year-round at HappyValley.com and recognize each fall on Homecoming Weekend. “Homecoming” is an interesting term. Most Penn Staters, even those whose blood runs the purest Blue and White, spend only a small portion of their lives in State College (not all,

of course; I count myself among a blessed minority). We move away and settle elsewhere. Everywhere. As per the vision of its founders, the lessons learned inside (and outside of ) Penn State’s classrooms spread outward, changing and enriching the wider world. And yet, a return trip always feels like coming home. A fellow founding Nittany Valley Society board member often remarked that no matter how far they stray or how much time has passed since their last visit, Penn

Livability.com listed State College as a top town for entrepreneurs, noting availability of resources like Centre Region Entrepreneur Network, New Leaf Initiative, TechCelerator and Lion Launch Pad.

4

BestCollegeReviews.com listed State College in its top 10 list for best college towns (of course). They noted that it is known as one of the smartest towns in America, has one of the best music scenes and is among the safest small towns in the country. Not bad, eh?

So we know that sitting in the bleachers during White Out is an experience like nothing else on earth, but it turns out that we aren’t alone. In 2005 and again in 2016, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit named Penn State the Best Student Section the country, but it almost seemed like an understatement when the entire student section sold out in less than 48 minutes flat this summer.

2

With successful football seasons and sold-out crowds, it’s no surprise that Penn State’s football program recently ranked as one of the most successful in the country. In a report conducted by Forbes, Penn

Staters everywhere invariably describe traveling to Happy Valley as “going back.” So Homecoming is, indeed, a most proper name for welcoming back those whose hearts will, at least in part, forever reside here. We hope this issue evokes the special feelings of that unbreakable bond. Chris Buchignani President, Blue White Media, Inc.

State stands at No. 14 spot with an average of $92 million worth of revenue, $48 million of which was turned to profit. Penn State has one of the few financially independent athletics department in the country. It is self-sufficient because it can use football revenue to fund all of its other teams and programs. Penn State ranked as the third-most valuable program in the Big Ten, and the only Pennsylvania team to make the list.

Movoto got it right when they said that we’re the Happiest Small City in the Country: “While college might make you think of finals week and a ton of homework, this place is actually known as The Happy Valley by many locals. Why? For starters, Psychology Today ranked this little Pennsylvania locale as one of the least stressful places in the United States. The commute was the fifth lowest, the married percent of people ranked 22nd. Even the walkability here was No. 19 on our list.” 5

Take the Happy Valley detour By Cara Aungst

Say the words “football weekend,” and you already have a picture in your mind. You know where you are going to order that pizza, what you’re going to pick up at The Book Store to bring home with you, and the bottle of wine you’ll buy. (See, it’s right there.) That’s the great thing about being in one of the best small college towns in the world, after all — it’s small! We know it by heart, and we love it. What you may not know, however, are all the places that are about to be your new favorites, and they can be found on your way back home. Take any major highway out of State College, and you are going to run into one of these places with personality and a flavor all their own. So, on your next trip, take a little detour. You never know what you’ll find. The Saturday & Sunday Brunch at the Hublersburg Inn

near Bellefonte is a detour well worth taking! Start off with a mimosa and a custom-made Bloody Mary from the Bloody Cart to get into a relaxing brunchy mood. The brunch menu includes traditional breakfast entrees like homemade waffles, pancakes, omelettes, French toast and a Hubie Breakfast. However, with six styles of Eggs Benedict to choose from deciding what to eat can be tough. Try the Crispy Pork Belly and Crab Cake benedicts – and they come with lovely red skinned home fries. The eggs are perfectly poached and the hollandaise is spot on! Make sure to save room for their amazing peanut butter pie. The Hublersburg Inn serves lunch and dinner as well and the patio and dining room settings at this historic inn are really unique to the area. If you live south of Penn State, take a different route home! Not only will you avoid the mind-numbing construction on 322 the Seven Mountains, but you get to take 305 through one of the most scenic routes you’ll find. You’ll drive through Rothrock State Forest, passing Whipple Dam (even our Texas friends swear by the smoked goodness at Doan’s Bones!), Greenwood State Park and then you’ll head into Amish country in Belleville. Stop in at Taste of the Valley at 4417 Main Street. It’s a great Hublersburg Inn

little coffee shop with a full coffee bar (hello, espresso) along with locally-made bagels, sticky buns and pies. Get a breakfast sandwich like the Farmer’s Sandwich – bacon, egg and pepper jack cheese on a homemade bagel – or fill up with a panini and soup of the day. The prices and charm are happily small-town, and the flavors will make you decide to take the scenic route home more often. If you do take 322, however, you are in for a treat. Maine Bay & Berry, located at 201 Elmwood Street, is an exclusive provider of the freshest seafood from Maine and other reaches of the world in addition to Maine-made products in Centre County. You’ll find fish like Arctic Char, Black Grouper, Norwegian salmon, shellfish, haddock (Ask and they’ll tell what time they came in to the store! At press time, fish were coming in an hour, just in time for an amazing tailgate meal.) along with freshly made seafood chowders, jams, gourmet pies, and more. Starting in November, they will expand into the entire building, featuring high-end local foods, wines and goods along with their stellar seafood offerings. “It has a vast variety,” one Facebook reviewer said. “It’s a great place to spend your money with good ethics.” We agree—this is a can’t-miss stop on your way home. Continue south and you’ll find The Columbus Chapel and Boal Mansion Museum in Boalsburg. This large complex of historic structures was constructed over the 200 years of the eight generations of the Boal family. The historic mansion was built around 1800 by David Boal. He was an early settler to the Centre Region, and the community that formed around him would take his name. If you’re an avid American history fan, you’ll love the Columbus Chapel and Boal Mansion Museum. It has numerous displays that detail the history of the Boal family and their ties to many historical figures including Christopher Columbus, Napoleon, Richard Henry Lee, and Simon Bolivar and are explained by a 1.5 hour guided tour. The museum recently opened an environmentally-controlled room where 150,000 pages of Columbus family manuscripts dating from 1450 are housed. The museum owns the largest collection of Columbus artifacts in North America. Other collections of note include an armory with weapons from the medieval through WWI periods, a transportation exhibit with nine of the family’s carriages, and over 300 original works of art dating from the Renaissance through the 19th century. Just across the road from the Boal Mansion is the Pennsylvania Military Museum. It was constructed in the late 1960s and situated on the grounds of the Pennsylvania National Guard’s 28th Infantry Division Shrine. Today, the Pennsylvania Military Museum is one of Happy Valley’s most visited museums. It features war time relics, retired tanks and cannons. Check the museum schedule as there are often reenactments, lectures and active displays throughout the year. For more information, visit pamilmuseum.org.

Penn State’s likely bowl destinations feature prestigious landing spots By John Patishnock

Penn State football is once again in the hunt for a Big Ten Conference title and berth in the College Football Playoff. Check out six possible destinations the Nittany Lions could have, depending on how the rest of the season shakes out.

Cotton Bowl, College Football Playoff semifinal (Dec. 29) 4 p.m. or 8 p.m. ET on ESPN | AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas Last appearance (season): 1974, when Penn State outlasted Baylor 41-20. Bowl history: 2-0-1. Penn State (likely) plays in this bowl if: the Nittany Lions win the Big Ten championship with 0 or 1 loss in the regular season.

Fall/Winter 2018 Fun Guide

Possible opponents: The giants of college football over the last few years all factor in here: Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Oklahoma, and maybe even LSU or Stanford, which are also off to strong starts — less probable but possible are teams like Auburn or Washington, or even West Virginia. Fans should root for this bowl because: Penn State would compete for its third national title in program history.

Orange Bowl, College Football Playoff semifinal (Dec. 29) 4 p.m. or 8 p.m. ET on ESPN | Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida Last appearance (season): 2005, a 26-23, 3-OT victory over Florida State Bowl history: 4-1. Penn State (likely) plays in this bowl if: the Nittany Lions win the Big Ten championship with 0 or 1 loss in the regular season. Possible opponents: Mostly

the same favorites from the Cotton Bowl. Fans should root for this bowl because: Penn State would compete for its third national title in program history.

Rose Bowl (Jan. 1) 5 p.m. ET, ESPN | Rose Bowl, Pasadena, California Last appearance (season): 2016, when Penn State lost on a lastsecond field goal to USC, in one of the most iconic games in Rose Bowl history. The final score was USC 52, Penn State 49. Bowl history: 1-3. Penn State (likely) plays in this bowl if: the Nittany Lions finish the regular season 11-1, and Ohio State finishes 12-0 and qualifies for the College Football Playoff. Possible opponents: Washington, which would give Penn State a rematch against the team it defeated in last season’s Fiesta Bowl, or Stanford. With the game pitting the Big 10 against the Pac 12, they’re the two most likely choices. Oregon is also in the mix, and even USC, though the Trojans tumbled out of the standings in the early part of the year after a blowout loss to Texas. Fans should root for this bowl because: even with Penn State just playing in this game a few seasons, there’s a whole lot to like about the Rose Bowl. It still stands as one of the most glamorous bowls, and in some ways, the most glamorous. Plus, the Nittany Lions could avenge their last two losses in the contest while making the program’s third-straight appearance in a New Year’s Six bowl; the latter would signal that Penn State has staying power and can compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff on an annual basis, and also help mightily with recruiting.

Citrus Bowl (Jan. 1) 1 p.m. ET, ABC | Camping World Stadium, Orlando, Florida Last appearance (season): 1997, a 21-6 defeat against Florida. Bowl history: 1-2. Penn State (likely) plays in this bowl if: the Nittany Lions have a respectable 10-2 mark in the regular season. It wasn’t long ago that 10 wins and an appearance in a Florida-based bowl was the norm for this program, so now that this would be a mid-tier destination for Penn State says a lot about the progress made and success achieved with James Franklin and the team over the last three seasons. Possible opponents: Virginia Tech, which has seen an early resurgence through the early part of the schedule, or Miami, Fla., which would give fans the opportunity to relive the Fiesta Bowl victory that landed the program its second national title. A team from either the ACC or SEC would square up against Penn State, so add in usual favorites such as LSU and Auburn. Fans should root for this bowl because: Penn State would be playing a marquee opponent in a bowl that still carries some weight. And the opportunity to face off against Miami again

14

would give this bowl some real sizzle and rank it possibly the most-watched bowl game outside of the College Football Playoff. Media attention would certainly be higher than usual for this bowl, too.

Outback Bowl (Jan. 1) Noon ET, ESPN2 | Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, Florida Last appearance (season): 2010, a 37-24 setback against Florida. Bowl history: 3-1. Penn State plays in this bowl if: the Nittany Lions stumble, if that’s the right word, to a 9-3 regular season. This destination is arguably slightly less glamorous than the Citrus Bowl — it’s newer and has a corporate feel to it, named after the steakhouse chain — though still would give Penn State an opportunity at a 10-win season. Possible opponents: Mississippi State, which is far and away the most intriguing matchup. The game would pit Penn State against former offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead who is quickly re-energizing the Bulldogs with some early high-scoring games. Mississippi State rolled up 600-plus offensive yards in two of its first three games. Other possibilities include LSU, Auburn, South Carolina, or even Kentucky, depending on how the SEC conference race turns out. That’s the conference with the tie-in with the Big Ten. Fans should root for this bowl because: Kind of hard to find a legit reason here — playing in this bowl would signal something of a disappointing season — though it’d still be fun to spend winter in Florida, and who wouldn’t want to see Joe Moorhead again, right?

Holiday Bowl (Dec. 31) 7 p.m. ET, FS1 | SDCCU Stadium, San Diego, Calif. Last appearance: 1989 season, when the Nittany Lions won a wild one against BYU, 50-39. Bowl history: 1-0. Penn State plays in this bowl if: things really go sideways for the Nittany Lions. This game is on the lower end of the bowl spectrum, so Penn State likely finishes 8-4 if this is where the Nittany Lions wind up. Possible opponents: Like the Rose Bowl, this contest has the Big 10 and Pac 12 facing off, so Penn State would likely face Washington State, Utah, or Oregon. Fans should root for this bowl because: Penn State does have a spirited history in this bowl, albeit in just one game, and fans on the west coast would have a manageable trip, just like in the past two years. Other than that, however, there isn’t much to like about this bowl destination.

Celebrating the good life in Happy Valley

A Tale of Tailgating, Cigars and The Birth of a Legend Ask any Nittany Lions fan to name the team’s most legendary player and the debate that ensues will be as epic as the players themselves. John Cappelletti, Shane Conlan, and LaVar Arrington come quickly to the minds and hearts of Penn Staters. Ki-Jana Carter definitely makes the list. “Is it too soon to include Saquon Barkley?” someone asks…and the debate rages on, because the legend and legacy of the Lions run deep in Happy Valley. It is easy to imagine a debate like this one raging goodnaturedly on game day around a table at Your Cigar Den, a local haven for football fanatics and cigar aficionados alike. For those who want to watch the game in comfort, this is a favored spot, complete with complimentary half-time tailgate refreshments and BYOB amenities. The discussion continues and the list of former Nittany Lions continue to grow as new patrons arrive at the shop to pick up cigars for their tailgates. Your Cigar Den’s signature Nittany blend

cigars are a perennial favorite. Handcrafted in Esteli, Nicaragua, specifically to honor Penn State’s tailgating tradition, these cigars have become “the taste of tailgating” for many alums. These mild to medium-bodied cigars are perfect to pair with most game day libations, have a smooth but complex flavor profile that appeals to cigar connoisseurs and novice smokers alike, and priced reasonably enough that you won’t mind buying a few extras to share. You also don’t have to come downtown to enjoy them. You can find them at the Your Cigar Den mobile humidor parked near the intersection of College Avenue and Porter Road in the Lettermans’ parking lot every home game until kick off. “What about Bruce Clark, the first-ever junior to win the Lombardi Trophy?” one gentleman asks, as he sets his bottle of scotch on the table and begins a slow walk along the shop’s Continued on page 15

The Perfect Pairing When a fine cigar is paired with the right beverage or libation (since it includes the “other”). Alcohol seems too rough of a word for a “Perfect Pairing,” the unique flavors of both are enhanced. Follow the chart to create the perfect pairing, whether you are relaxing with the refined flavors of The Letterman Edition cigars, or enjoying the milder, smooth flavors of a Nittany Cigar, exclusively available at Your Cigar Den.

humidors. There are over 450 premium cigars from which to choose. Tony Ghaffari, the shop owner, offers a recommendation. Other patrons chime in. The atmosphere is casual, an almost family-style affair that has won Your Cigar Den the Best of Award for Customer Service and Best Place to Buy Gifts for the last two years in a row. But the choice today is obvious: Football is in the air, and the cigar to savor is The New Letterman Edition – the cigar created specifically to recognize and honor the players that made the Nittany Lions and the Pennsylvania State University legend. Rivaling the best cigars available in both quality and flavor, The Letterman Edition is unlike anything else on the market. They are made from some of the world’s rarest tobaccos, including Dominican San Vicente, a favorite of Davidoff; San Andreas, favored by Padron; and Brazilian Mata Fina for a hint of sweetness. The Letterman Edition cigars deliver a bold, dynamic flavor profile designed to please the refined palate of an aficionado. This is a cigar you won’t forget. The Letterman Edition comes in two strengths: a mediumbodied, smooth version with a true Connecticut wrapper for a creamy finish, and a full-bodied, bold version that features an African Cameroon wrapper – the same wrapper Partagas chose for its blockbuster anniversary cigar, the 150 Signature Series, which is widely regarded as one of the finest cigars ever made. The Cameroon wrapper kicks up the cigar’s finish with notes of pepper and spice. The Letterman Edition cigars are also uniquely ornate –- one of the three sizes is shaped like a football and bears the initials “PSU” – making Letterman Edition Cigars an ideal gift for every cigar-loving alum and fan. (Show a 16

little mercy and take a few home for folks that couldn’t make it to the game!) So the gentleman chooses his Letterman, lights it, and relaxes back into his chair. Around him, the debate storms on, but with pleasant company and a cigar this good, he won’t mind if it lasts all night.

The Letterman Edition and Nittany cigars can be found at both Your Cigar Den locations: Downtown at 127 S. Fraser Street, State College, and on game day, at the Your Cigar Den mobile humidor, parked near the intersection of College Avenue and Porter Road in the Lettermans’ parking lot.

New to cigars? These tips will help you smoke like an aficionado: 1. Never remove the entire cigar cap (tip) when cutting your cigar; you only need a hole large enough for the smoke to pass through. 2. Toast the foot (end) of your cigar before lighting it by holding a flame to the cigar tip and gently rotating it until it begins to glow. 3. While lighting the cigar, puff smoke into your mouth without inhaling, blow the smoke away, then blow clean air gently back through your cigar to cool the tobacco. Repeat until you see thick white smoke. 4. An ideal cigar ash is about 1-inch long; when it gets longer, gently roll it in an ashtray so the ash drops off naturally. Never tap it off. 5. When you have finished smoking, lay what is left in the ashtray; don’t try to crush or extinguish your cigar.

PSU Stars look back on football, food and fans By Jeff Cavanaugh

If you walk around Happy Valley on a football weekend and strike up a conversation about the best Penn State teams ever, you’re sure to hear about the undefeated, unstoppable 1994 team and the 2005 11-1 team that was one play away from a perfect season. We caught up with three former Penn State stars that were the cornerstones of the 1994 and 2005 teams to find out their favorite on-field memories and their favorite places to eat and hang out in and around Happy Valley. #32 Ki-Jana Carter

“There are so many restaurants that it’s hard to pick one: Lion’s Den, CC Peppers, The Waffle Shop, The Tavern,” Carter said. However, if he had to pick his favorite meals or menu items in Happy Valley, Carter goes for CC Peppers’ California Style Chicken Cheesesteak (melted cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and mayo) and then breakfast at the Waffle Shop.

#81 Kyle Brady

Running Back \ 1992-1994 There was no running back in Penn State history as exciting as Ki-Jana Carter was in 1994. Every time he touched the ball, there was a chance he was taking it the distance. No one will ever forget the first play of the Rose Bowl when he outran everyone for an 83-yard touchdown run. If Penn State’s juggernaut offense didn’t blow out everyone in their path — averaging a ridiculous 48 points per game in Big Ten games — Carter probably would have ended up with the Heisman Trophy before being taken #1 overall in the 1995 NFL Draft. During his junior season, Ki-Jana ran for 1,539 yards on only 198 carries — including 139 yards and four touchdowns in his most memorable game — the 63-14 Homecoming blowout of then #21 Ohio State. “Being from the Columbus area, it was a big deal,” Carter said. And like every player that has had the honor to play for Penn State, Carter still raves about the game day atmosphere in State College. “From driving on the bus to the stadium, getting greeted by the fans when we got there and then playing in the best stadium in the world,” Carter added. When he gets back to town these days, Carter has multiple favorite spots to stop in for a bite to eat.

Tight End \ 1991-1994 Penn State’s 1994 team had three offensive players drafted in the top 10 picks – running back Ki-Jana Carter (#1), quarterback Kerry Collins (#5) and tight end Kyle Brady (#9). Brady, a consensus All-American and two-time All-Big Ten selection was a force at tight end both as a blocker and a receiver. As a senior, Brady caught 27 passes for 365 yards and two touchdowns. “The 1994 season was a great year. We were just a group of guys that really bought into Joe’s philosophy and his way of doing things,” Brady said. “We were all in that year; we worked our butts off and it all came together.” Among Brady’s favorite memories of the 1994 season were the thrilling 31-24 victory over #5 Michigan at the Big House and

the thrilling comeback from down 21 points at Illinois to save their undefeated season. “Penn State was such a beautiful place to play, and I don’t know if I appreciated it as much as I should have when I was there,” Brady added. “It really is as special a place as there is in college football when you’re playing there on Saturdays.”

“Penn State was such a beautiful place to play, and I don’t know if I appreciated it as much as I should have when I was there. It really is as special a place as there is in college football when you’re playing there on Saturdays.” Brady went on to play 13 seasons with the New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars and New England Patriots and caught 25 touchdowns in his NFL career. He is now an attorney in Florida and hopes to get back to State College later this season. “If I get a chance, I go to The Tavern and catch up; such great memories there and the all-you-can-eat sides,” Brady said. “I also try to make it to the Creamery with my kids. It is such a classic and has such great tradition there.” And like most Penn State alums, Brady was a big fan of the grilled stickies at the now closed Ye Olde College Diner. “You have one of those warmed up with some ice cream and they are just incredible,” Brady said. Thankfully, the grilled stickies did not go away when The Diner closed. The same, world-famous grilled stickies are now available at The Corner Room at 100 W. College Ave.

“The last game I suited up – the 2006 Orange Bowl,” Robinson said. “We went into triple overtime and it gave us the opportunity to show that our coach was better than Bowden.” After his career at Penn State, Robinson was drafted by Michael Robinson the San Francisco 49ers and was converted to a running back and eventually a fullback. He went on to make the Pro Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks and retired after winning Super Bowl XLVIII in his final NFL game. Currently, Michael Robinson works as an analyst on various programs for NFL Network. While Robinson was a student, he liked to hang out at the HUB and was a fan of the now-closed Sports Café on West College Ave – which is now home to Noodles & Company – and his favorite food in Happy Valley was the grilled sticky buns from the Ye Olde College Diner. When he gets back to town these days for a game, he likes to go to Champs Sports Grill at 1611 N. Atherton St.

#12 Michael Robinson Quarterback \ 2002-2005 Penn State has arguably never had a more versatile and do-it-all player than Michael Robinson. Before taking the reins as the team’s star quarterback in 2005, Robinson made an impact as a wide receiver and running back. The Nittany Lions knew that somehow, someway they needed to get the ball in the hands of #12. In his spectacular 2005 season, Robinson threw for 2,350 yards and 17 touchdowns on 162-of-311 passing and ran for 806 yards and 11 scores. He was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and finished in the top five in the Heisman Trophy vote. From the comeback at Northwestern when Robinson found Derrick Williams for a 37-yard game-winning touchdown with under a minute remaining to the thrilling 17-10 win over Ohio State in front of a deafeningly loud White Out at Beaver Stadium – the 2005 season was full of great games. For Robinson, the best memory though was his final game, the 26-23 Orange Bowl win over Florida State.

Local foods alumni cannot live without

Last week, we asked Penn State alumni on Facebook what they missed the most about Happy Valley when they are away. Even now, you’re probably thinking about your favorite restaurant, maybe even down to a favorite table or booth, and that food craving you can’t quite satisfy anywhere else. Alumni obliged with their dream food from their favorite spot, some old, some new, and some a distant memory. Here are their top picks: It’s no surprise that The Corner Room stays at the top of the list. It is a timeless staple, after all, Instagram-worthy backdrop, and foodie heaven for all ages. As freshmen, many can remember eating a classic meal with their parents here. Later, when feeling fancy with friends, one could depend on The Corner Room to supply great sandwiches and burgers that felt like home. It also doesn’t hurt that it is the official home of the original grilled stickies. Seriously, go have one right now! Currently the restaurant has Monday and Sunday specials with $5.99 “All You Can Eat

A Taste of India Cooking with Beer Cooking with Wine Fresh Pasta

Pasta” and $9.99 “All You Can Eat Breakfast Buffet” respectively. If you find yourself wandering around on a football weekend for a place to eat, go and indulge yourself with some stickies. Many alumni miss the Deli & Z-Bar because it offers one of the best bar and restaurant combinations in the area. The Deli serves traditional American meals all made from scratch! The menu offers everything from comfort food to pub staples. Here, they make their own soups, breads, sauces and desserts. Meanwhile, the Z-Bar is the best accompaniment to an amazing meal. Celebrating American Craft beer with more than 57 drafts, the Z-Bar knows its specialties. However, if craft isn’t your thing, take a look at their respected wine selections. The Nittany Lion Inn’s main contribution to PSU society, besides being an amazing inn, is food. It's one of the first places that many alumni eat when they come back to town. The Inn offers two distinct dining experiences with two main restaurants: Whiskers, a casual dining spot, and The Dining Room, which is more formal. Whiskers offers a more pub-like experience with a wide variety of salads and sandwiches. The Dining Room was awarded the 2016 Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence and Wine Spectator’s 2018 “Best of ” Award of Excellence and is the top option for fine dining in Happy Valley. Ye Old College Diner has always been a classic with alumni. It didn’t hurt that it was open 24/7, with breakfast available all day and night. It was a sad day when it closed its doors, but fortunately their celebrated Grilled Stickies live on!

“Remember the BEST lasagne place,” Susan W. said. “Back in the ’60s, we had the best lasagne on earth, not far from the Lion’s Den. Plus there was that square cut HiWay Pizza across from McLanahan’s, and their round pie place across from SBS.” Gus’ Cheesesteaks complete with banana peppers, are fondly remembered, along with The Blue Shark at the Shark Club. It’s hard to scratch the itch that Darkhorse and The Train Station left when they closed their doors.

We found the perfect bottle for your holiday party By Cara Aungst

For many years, my Thanksgivings were spent in Buckeye territory. We didn’t talk football… not over dinner at least… but Penn State was represented every year by my favorite wine. If you are like me and are venturing outside of Happy Valley this fall, take a little bit of Central Pennsylvania along with you in the form of some of our delicious, inventive wines and ciders. Seven Mountains Wine Cellars’ cranberry wine is my go‑to bottle to take to holiday parties. First because it’s just the right seasonal nod to the cranberry mood of Thanksgiving, but secondly because it’s so darn good. It’s not just me and my Ohio‑based family who think so; the wine has been awarded double gold at

Seven Mountains Wine Cellars the Farm Show, and was also awarded the 2011 Governor’s Cup for Best of Show. Try it, and it will become part of your family’s tradition. But make a point to get a few bottles the next time you are in town – this limited edition wine sells out fast! Their spiced apple is another sweet wine that fits well for winter parties. It’s fermented with apple pie spices and can be served warm for a mulled cider taste with a kick. (sevenmountainswinecellars. com; 814‑808‑6635). There is a bottle of Mount Nittany Winery’s Tailgate Red chilling in my refrigerator. It was gifted to me recently, and even though I thought I would save it to commemorate a special occasion, I don’t think it will last that long. This best seller wasn’t really made to be saved forever, though. It was made to go with anything from burgers to hot dogs to barbecue. It pairs well with weekdays, old friends, and laughter. While you are picking up your Tailgate Red, make sure to try their Chardonnay Reserve.

(Kingviewmead. com; 412‑335‑0070) Hungry Run Hungry Run Wine & Spirits Wine & Spirits hails from over the Seven Mountains and offers flavors like Green Apple Riesling, Rollin' Rita and Watermelon along with smallbatch spirits. (hungryrunwineandspirits; 717‑543‑5111) Bellefonte is probably already on your to‑do list this fall, and if it isn’t, it needs to be. The downtown is buzzing with events, new (and established favorite) restaurants and that beautiful waterfront. Just over the railroad tracks, Good Intent Cider is cranking out some of the best hard cider you’ll find. With flavors coming to you from Gettysburg battlefields (yes, really) to local orchards, you can find favorites like the semi‑dry Adam’s Apple or bity Ginger Kid with hints of ginger root and local maple syrup. Enjoy a Friday night with live music at their cidery, or buy a refillable growler to take to your next party. (goodintentcider.com; 814‑355‑1654)

Penn State winter sports watch By Jeff Cavanaugh

While everyone in Happy Valley is hopeful that the Penn State Nittany Lions will be playing important football games in December and January this winter, there will also lots of exciting action on the hardwood, on the ice and on the mats. Here is a look at some of the best teams, games and players to watch this winter in State College:

Wrestling There are few, if any, teams in recent memory as dominant as the Penn State wrestling program. The Nittany Lions have won seven of the last eight NCAA titles and have a 45-match winning streak and are poised to make a run at another title. In the long, proud history of Penn State wrestling, there have been two wrestlers who have won three individual national championships. This season, Penn State has three separate star wrestlers looking to claim their third straight individual titles. Two-time national champ at 184 pounds Bo Nickal, who pinned Ohio State’s Myles Martin to clinch the team title for the Nittany Lions last year, is moving up to 197 pounds. While both Jason Nolf (157) and Vincenzo Joseph (165) will look to win their third national championship each. Since Olympic Gold Medalist Cael Sanderson took the program over in 2011, the Nittany Lions have been dominant and will look to continue that this season. The Nittany Lions open their season on November 11 at Rec Hall against the Kent State Golden Flashes. The biggest home meet of the year is when the Michigan Wolverines come to the Bryce Jordan Center the first weekend in February. Penn State wrestling may be the hottest ticket in town, so if you’re interested in experiencing one of the best atmospheres in all of college sports, make sure to look into season tickets now! Can’t Miss Game: 2019 BJC Dual: PSU vs. Michigan, weekend of February 1 at the Bryce Jordan Center (The date and time of the dual will be announced at a later date per the Big Ten.)

Mens’ Basketball The Penn State Nittany Lions basketball team is building in the right direction under Coach Pat Chambers. Last season, the Nittany Lions posted an impressive 26-13 record en route to the NIT Championship. Most impressive, the Nittany Lions ended with a .500 conference record for the first time since the 2010-11 season

Fall/Winter 2018 Fun Guide

Mens’ Basketball – and only the fourth time in the past 21 seasons. In order to take the next step and earn an invitation to the Big Dance – the NCAA Tournament – the Nittany Lions will have to replace last year’s star point guard, Tony Carr, who was drafted by the New Orleans Pelicans with the 51st overall pick. As a sophomore last year, Carr filled the state sheet and averaged 19.6 points (second-most in the Big Ten), 5.0 assists and 4.9 rebounds. The Nittany Lions are not short on returning talent though. The biggest piece coming back is junior forward Lamar Stevens who won the NIT Most Outstanding Player and averaged over 19 points per game in the five tournament games. Penn State will also get back forward Mike Watkins who missed all of Penn State’s tournament games last season with a knee injury. Watkins a 6’9” junior was named honorable mention all-conference last year. This year, the Big Ten Conference moved to a 20 conference game schedule – meaning ten huge conference games will be held in State College. The first conference game at the Bryce Jordan Center may be the most intriguing – when the Indiana Hoosiers and freshman superstar Romeo Langford come to Happy Valley on December 4. Langford, who averaged over 35 points per game as a high school senior, is almost sure to be headed to the NBA next season but is the kind of playmaker that can take a team to the top. The Nittany Lions will also welcome perennial powerhouse Michigan State to the BJC on January 13. The Nittany Lions are expecting big things on the court this year and hope to make a run at the Big Ten championship and the Big Ten Tournament, which will be held from March 13-17 in Chicago. Can’t Miss Game: PSU vs. Michigan State, Sunday, January 13. The Spartans have stars every year and always seem to make a run in the NCAA tournament under coach Tom Izzo. Last season, the Nittany Lions came up just short against the #5 ranked Spartans in East Lansing. Continued on page 35 33

Winter sports watch…

Continued from page 33

Ice Hockey For 20 home games at the Pegula Ice Center, Happy Valley will again transform into Hockey Valley. After a second-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, head coach Guy Gadowsky and the Penn State men’s ice hockey are ready to make a run toward the Frozen Four. Last season, the Big Ten sent three teams to the Frozen Four and if Penn State can get rolling, their talented roster can make a serious push to get to the Frozen Four at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, NY in April. This season, the Nittany Lions will be led by team captain Chase Berger and alternates Kevin Kerr and Brandon Biro. Berger, a senior forward, has not missed a game since arriving in State College in 2015 and is currently third on the all-time scoring list with 89 career points. For local hockey fans looking to see the Nittany Lions on the road, Penn State will again play on some bigtime rinks – at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia against Princeton on October 26 and at the world’s most famous arena, Madison Square Garden, on January 26 against Big Ten rival Michigan. Can’t Miss Game: PSU vs. Norte Dame, Friday, December 7 and Saturday, December 8. The Fighting Irish had an unbelievable season last year that ended in a 2-1 loss in the National Championship game. Last season, the Nittany Lions were winless in four tries against the Fighting Irish so are looking for revenge.

Lady Lions Basketball After struggling through the tough Big Ten Conference last season with an incredibly young team – one without a single senior on the roster – the Lady Lions are poised to bounce back in a big

way for the 2018-19 season. The Lady Lions, who won 11 of 15 home games last season, have the luxury of playing 18 games in the comfort of the Bryce Jordan Center where they have gone 27-6 over the past two seasons. The season starts with Lady Lions Basketball 10 straight games in Happy Valley and if the Lady Lions get rolling early, there is no telling how far this team can go. The benefit of last season’s young team is that now the Lady Lions return a team of veterans this season for head coach Coquese Washington’s 12th season. The Lady Lions return their top two scorers from last season – guards Amari Carter and Teniya Page. Page is one of five Lady Lions in program history with 1,500 career points and 300 career assists and needs only 411 points to hit the 2,000 point mark. The Lady Lions season gets underway on Thursday, November 8 against Providence but the season really picks up when Maryland comes to town on December 28 for the Lady Lions first conference game of the season. Can’t Miss Game: PSU vs. Ohio State, Thursday, January 17. The Buckeyes had an impressive 28-7 record last year before being upset in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Buckeyes beat Penn State twice by an average of 27 points last year, so if the Lady Lions want to turn take the program up a notch; there is no bigger game than Ohio State.
